A girl painting is one of the quietest subjects you can put on a canvas, and that is exactly why it holds attention. No fuss, no crowd, just one figure caught mid thought by a window or a fire, and a face you only half see because the mood lives in the shoulders and the light.
Below are thirty six scenes built for oil on a small canvas, each one a single sitting if you keep the brushwork loose. Work from easiest poses near the top to the busier ones further down, and treat every face as a few soft shapes rather than a portrait you have to get exactly right.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start the whole set with a girl reading by the fire in a cream cable sweater, since the pose asks for nothing more than a curled shape and a warm glow. Block the canvas in dark chocolate brown for the room, then bring in the fire’s orange glow with a loose diagonal of cadmium orange and yellow ochre before the figure goes on top.
Build the sweater in thick strokes of cream and warm white, letting the knit texture come from the direction of the brush rather than any drawn lines. Keep the face turned down toward the book, just a few strokes for the nose and brow, so the warmth of the scene carries the picture instead of the features.
The usual snag is a fire that looks flat. Fix it by dragging a dry brush loaded with orange and white across the embers so the light breaks up unevenly, the way real firelight does.
If you do not have orange on your palette, mix it fresh from cadmium red and yellow ochre, it reads warmer than a tube orange against brown anyway.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Cadmium Orange,Cream,Payne’s Grey
Move from firelight to open air with a girl walking a frosty lane in a long camel coat, a good next subject because the whole picture sits on one long diagonal path leading her away from you. Rough in the lane first with a palette knife dragged in pale grey and cream, then set the coat in warm camel against it so she reads instantly against the cold ground.
Work the figure from the coat outward: block the shape solid first, then add the collar, the hint of dark hair, and a scarf end caught mid step. Keep her small against the lane so the distance does the work rather than detail in the face.
Check the proportion before you commit to the background: her height should sit at roughly a third of the canvas if the lane stretches off into mist, any taller and she crowds the space meant for distance.
If camel paint is not in your set, mix it from burnt sienna and a touch of white, warmed slightly with yellow ochre.
Palette: Camel,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Burnt Sienna
After a figure walking away, try one that sits still: a girl daydreaming at a window with her chin on her hand, which gives you a chance to let light do most of the talking. Set the light source first, a cool wash of icy blue and white across the glass, before you place her profile against it.
Build the window frame in a few confident strokes of brown, then paint the figure as a dark warm silhouette interrupted only by the pale curve of her cheek catching the window light. The hand under the chin is the trickiest part, so simplify it to three or four shapes rather than individual fingers.
Because the light comes from one side only, keep every shadow on her consistent with that source, the far side of her face and sweater should sit noticeably darker than the window side.
If you want to try something nearby next, a few of the ideas in this reading painting list use a similar window glow.
Palette: Icy Blue,Titanium White,Van Dyke Brown,Cherry Red
Bring in some color now with a girl skating alone on a frozen pond at sunrise, a scene built almost entirely on the contrast between a warm sky and cold ice. Start with the sky, blending cherry red into soft orange and pale cream near the horizon, then lay the ice in icy blue and white with long horizontal strokes.
Place the skater small and off center, her coat a single warm note of red or rust against all that cold color. Work her in loose and confident, a lean to one side with a trailing scarf, since a skater drawn too carefully tends to freeze mid motion instead of gliding through it.
Pay attention to where the eye level sits: keep the horizon low, close to a third of the way up the canvas, so the sunrise sky gets the space it needs and the ice reads as a wide stretch rather than a narrow strip.
A palette knife dragged flat across the ice adds a streak of reflected sunrise color without any fuss.
Palette: Cherry Red,Cadmium Orange,Icy Blue,Cream
Carry the red forward into a girl in a red coat crossing a snowy bridge, a strong, simple composition where one bright coat against white snow does almost all the work. Lay the snow and bridge stone first in cream, grey and a touch of icy blue for shadow, then drop the red coat in last so it sits forward of everything else.
Paint the figure walking across the bridge in profile or three quarter view, keeping the stride mid step so the picture has some movement to it. The bridge rail gives you a strong horizontal line to anchor the composition, so block that in with confident straight strokes before softening it slightly.
If the red coat looks too flat against the snow, warm the snow in the coat’s shadow with a touch of the same red mixed into grey, it ties the two together instead of leaving them as separate colors.
No cherry red on hand works with cadmium red deepened by a touch of Payne’s grey.
Palette: Cherry Red,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Cream
Slow the pace with a girl sitting on a stone wall pouring tea from a thermos, a quiet midpoint scene where the steam rising from the cup is the small detail that carries the whole mood. Block the stone wall in warm grey and ochre first, then seat the figure on top in a chunky knit coat so she reads solid against the rough stone texture.
Save the thermos and the pour for last, a single curved line of steam in soft white against the cold background. Keep the hands simple, just enough shape to show she is holding the thermos rather than drawing every knuckle.
For the ten minute version, sketch the wall and figure loosely and suggest the steam with one dry brush stroke. Given forty minutes, build up the stone texture with a palette knife and add frost highlights along the wall’s edge.
If you do not have a palette knife, the edge of an old credit card drags paint almost as well for the stone texture.

Keep the quiet going with a girl feeding ducks at the edge of an icy pond, a scene that adds a little life to the canvas without complicating it. Lay the pond first in broken patches of icy blue and grey, leaving some areas lighter to suggest ice catching the light, then paint the girl bent slightly forward at the water’s edge.
The ducks only need a few strokes each, a dark oval body and a touch of orange for the bill, scattered near her feet rather than lined up evenly. Too many identical ducks flattens the scene, so vary their size and angle a little.
If her bent posture looks stiff, loosen the line of her back with one continuous curved stroke rather than building it from straight segments, it reads far more natural.
Swap breadcrumbs in her hand for a small paper bag if you want a simpler shape to paint than scattered crumbs.
Palette: Icy Blue,Chocolate Brown,Cadmium Orange,Moss Green
Bring the scene indoors again with a girl playing the cello in a sunlit room in January, a subject that rewards a strong light source more than fine detail. Decide where the January sun falls first, usually a low warm beam across the floor, and paint that in before the figure so the whole room feels lit from one direction.
Build the cello as a few confident curved strokes in rich brown, then set the girl’s silhouette around it, her bow arm extended in one long diagonal line. The face stays turned down toward the instrument, so spend your detail on the curve of her back and the warm wood tone instead.
If the cello’s shape fights you, simplify it to two overlapping ovals joined by a narrow waist rather than trying to draw the exact scroll and bridge.
A fan brush dragged lightly over the sunbeam softens its edge and makes the light feel like it is moving through dust in the air.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Cadmium Yellow,Payne’s Grey
After the cello, relax the pose entirely with a girl lying on a quilt with a cat on her stomach, a scene built almost entirely from pattern and softness. Paint the quilt first in a patchwork of muted colors, keeping each square loose rather than perfectly geometric, then lay the girl across it in a long reclining shape.
The cat only needs a curled grey or ginger shape with two small ears and a tucked tail, painted after the girl so it sits convincingly on top of her sweater. Resting the cat’s weight slightly into the fabric, a small shadow underneath, is what sells the illusion that it is really lying there.
If the quilt pattern starts looking too busy, step back and simplify every other square to a flat color with no pattern at all, your eye will still read it as a full quilt.
Swap the cat for a small dog curled the same way if cats are not your thing to paint.
Palette: Moss Green,Cherry Red,Cream,Chocolate Brown
Shift the mood brighter with a girl holding a bunch of white tulips at a flower stall, a nice contrast after several indoor and snowy scenes. Paint the stall’s background loosely in muted color first so it recedes, then build the tulips as a cluster of simple closed cup shapes in white with a touch of green at the base of each.
Hold the bunch slightly off center in her arms rather than dead center, it reads more like she just picked them up rather than posed with them. Her face can stay turned toward the flowers, a small downward tilt that keeps the focus on the bouquet.
If white tulips start to look like blobs, add one stroke of pale blue grey shadow into each cup to separate the petals without drawing every edge.
For more flower shapes to borrow from, the acrylic painting flowers list has several simple bouquet arrangements worth studying even in oil.
Palette: Titanium White,Moss Green,Chocolate Brown,Icy Blue
Scale the scene up with a girl seen from behind looking at snowy mountains, a composition that lets you paint a full landscape without worrying about her face at all. Build the mountains first in layers of pale blue grey, lightest in the distance and slightly warmer and darker closer to her, before placing her small silhouette in the foreground.
Her figure from behind needs only a coat shape, a scarf line, and perhaps one hand lifted to shade her eyes. Keep her edges soft against the sky so she feels part of the scene rather than cut out and pasted onto it.
Watch the horizon line carefully here, since this whole subject depends on perspective: set it lower on the canvas if you want the mountains to feel tall and distant, higher if you want her to feel close to the peaks.
If mountains feel intimidating, simplify them to three overlapping triangular shapes with soft edges, that reads as a range without needing exact peaks.
Palette: Icy Blue,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Chocolate Brown
Turn the subject inward with a girl painting at an easel by a frosty window, a fitting scene for this exact list and a good one to slow down and enjoy. Set the frosty window first with a few scratched lines of white into wet blue paint to suggest frost patterns, then build the room around it in warm brown.
Place her easel at an angle so you can show the edge of her canvas without painting a whole picture within the picture, just a hint of color on it is enough. Her figure stands or sits with brush raised, the gesture of the arm more important than any fine detail in the hand.
If the frost pattern turns into a muddy smear, scrape it back while the paint is still wet with the wooden end of your brush rather than trying to paint white lines on top.
No window frost effect on your canvas yet, try salt sprinkled into wet blue paint and brushed off once dry for a similar broken texture.

Add some motion with a girl walking a corgi through a snowy park, a scene that benefits from keeping the dog small and energetic against her calmer stride. Lay the snowy path and bare trees first in cool grey and white, then place the girl walking steadily with the corgi’s short legs mid trot just ahead of her on the leash.
Paint the corgi as a simple orange and white oval with pointed ears, its low stance giving the whole picture a sense of scale against the girl’s taller coat. Keep the leash line loose rather than taut, it suggests a relaxed walk rather than a dog straining ahead.
If the corgi’s proportions look off, compare its height to her boot, the dog’s back should sit no taller than her knee, that single check saves most corgi paintings from looking like a different breed.
For more dog poses to study before this one, the dog themed journal pages show a range of simple trotting poses.
Palette: Cadmium Orange,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Chocolate Brown
Settle back into stillness with a girl wrapped in a blanket on a porch swing in snow, a cozy scene where the chains of the swing give you one clean structural line to anchor everything else. Paint the porch and falling snow first in soft grey and white, using a dry brush flicked lightly across the canvas for scattered snowflakes.
Build the blanket as thick folded strokes wrapped around her shoulders, letting the color bleed slightly into the sweater underneath so the two feel like one warm mass rather than separate layers. Her face peeks out just enough to show she is looking out at the snow, nothing more detailed than that.
If the swing chains look stiff, paint them as two thin curved lines rather than straight, chains always sag slightly under any weight.
Swap the porch swing for a plain wooden bench if chains feel fiddly to paint convincingly.
Palette: Cream,Payne’s Grey,Chocolate Brown,Titanium White
Move to a morning routine with a girl braiding her hair at a mirror on a winter morning, a subject that lets you paint a reflection without needing a second full figure. Set up the mirror’s frame and the room’s cool morning light first, then paint the girl’s back facing you with her reflection showing the front of her face in softer, slightly blurred strokes.
Build the braid itself as three twisting ribbons of color rather than individual strands, varying the value slightly along its length so it reads as rope rather than a flat stripe. Her raised arms doing the braiding give the pose its energy, so keep that gesture loose and confident rather than overworked.
If the reflection feels confusing to plan, paint the real figure completely first, then treat the mirror as a second, smaller, softer version of the same pose rather than a different angle.
A fine liner brush works well for the loose hair strands escaping the braid, keep that detail only at the very end.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Icy Blue,Cherry Red
Travel a little with a girl in a burgundy beret on a Paris bridge in light snow, a scene that leans on one strong accent color against a soft grey city backdrop. Build the bridge and distant buildings loosely first in muted grey blue, keeping architectural detail minimal, just enough shape to suggest a city rather than draw it block by block.
Paint the beret as a single confident round shape in deep burgundy, angled slightly to one side, since that tilt is what makes a beret read as worn rather than stuck on top of the head. Let a few soft white dots of falling snow sit over the whole scene last, added with the tip of a round brush once everything else is dry enough not to smear.
If the city background competes with her for attention, knock back its contrast with a thin grey glaze once it is dry, pushing it further into the distance.
No burgundy on your palette mixes easily from cherry red and a touch of Payne’s grey.
Palette: Burgundy,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Chocolate Brown
Return indoors with a girl writing a letter at a candlelit desk, a scene built almost entirely around one small warm light source in an otherwise dark room. Paint the room dark first in deep brown and grey, then add the candle flame last as a tiny bright dot of yellow surrounded by a soft halo of orange blending into the dark.
Let that candlelight shape everything else, the side of her face closest to the flame should be noticeably warmer and brighter than the side turned away. Keep the desk and letter simple, a few pale strokes suggesting paper rather than legible writing.
If the candle glow looks too even all around, push more orange into the shadow side of nearby objects and keep the far corners of the room nearly black, that contrast is what makes candlelight convincing.
For more candlelit scenes to study the glow from, the candle drawing ideas cover several similar lighting setups.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cadmium Orange,Cadmium Yellow,Payne’s Grey
Try a striking contrast next with a girl in a hot spring with snow on the rocks around her, a scene that pairs steam and snow in one frame. Build the snowy rocks first in cool white and grey, then paint the water in warm milky blue green with soft steam rising above it in loose white strokes blended with a dry brush.
Place the girl’s shoulders and head just above the water line, her hair perhaps damp and darker than usual, with the steam partly obscuring the edges of her figure for a soft, atmospheric finish. Resist outlining her too sharply where the steam crosses her, letting some edges disappear into white keeps the mood right.
If the steam looks like flat clouds rather than rising mist, drag the dry brush upward in short strokes rather than side to side, it gives the steam a sense of movement off the water.
Swap the hot spring for a steaming mug of tea in her hands if the water setting feels too ambitious for one sitting.
Palette: Titanium White,Moss Green,Icy Blue,Payne’s Grey
Give the figure a small task with a girl carrying an armful of firewood to a cabin, a pose that reads instantly through the slight forward lean and the bundled shape against her chest. Paint the cabin and snow first as a simple warm brown box against white ground, then build the figure walking toward it with the firewood held close.
Keep the logs as a loose cluster of brown and grey ovals rather than individually drawn pieces, varying their size slightly so the bundle does not look like a stack of identical rectangles. Her coat should show a bit of strain in the shoulders, one arm visibly bent tighter than the other to support the weight.
If the firewood bundle looks too tidy, knock a few logs slightly out of alignment with the rest, real armfuls never stack perfectly.
A palette knife loaded with pure white works well for the final snow highlights along the cabin roofline.
You Will Need
- palette knife
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Cherry Red
Pause the action with a girl tying her skate laces on a snowy bench, a small quiet moment before the busier skating scene painted earlier in this list. Paint the bench and surrounding snow first, then seat her bent forward over one knee, her hands working at the laces in a few simple interlocking shapes rather than detailed fingers.
The skate blade itself only needs one confident curved silver line to catch the light, suggesting metal without overworking it. Keep her bent posture relaxed rather than rigid, a slight curve through the spine rather than a straight line down to the boot.
If the bent pose looks stiff, loosen the angle at the hip and knee slightly, a pose copied too exactly from a photo often reads as frozen rather than caught mid action.
Swap ice skates for snow boots and laces if skating gear is unfamiliar to paint convincingly.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Icy Blue
Slow right down with a girl knitting a long scarf in a rocking chair, a scene where the trailing scarf gives you a long, satisfying shape to paint across the lower half of the canvas. Build the chair and room first in warm brown, then seat her with knitting needles held at an angle, the scarf cascading down over her lap and onto the floor.
Paint the scarf in long, slightly uneven strokes of one strong color, letting a few loose threads or a dropped stitch shape break the edge here and there so it does not look like a flat ribbon. Her hands only need simple rounded shapes gripping the needles, no individual fingers required.
If the rocking chair’s curve looks wrong, check it against a simple rule: the two curved rockers at the base should mirror each other exactly, any mismatch there is what makes a rocking chair look unstable on the canvas.
No long scarf color on hand, moss green against the brown chair reads just as cozy as red does here.
Palette: Moss Green,Chocolate Brown,Cream,Cherry Red
Add a sense of travel with a girl at a train window watching snowy fields go by, a scene that uses motion blur in the background to contrast with her stillness inside. Paint the fields outside the window with loose horizontal streaks of white and pale blue grey, dragging the brush slightly to suggest speed, before the train interior and her figure go in crisp and still by comparison.
Keep her profile simple against the glass, one hand perhaps resting near the window frame. The window itself can carry a faint reflection of her own face layered subtly over the blurred fields, a nice touch if you want to push the idea further.
For the quick ten minute version, skip the reflection and simply paint the blurred fields and her still silhouette. With forty minutes, add that layered reflection and a little condensation fog near the glass edges.
If you do not have time for a full field, a single fence line repeated and blurred across the window reads as countryside just as well.
Palette: Icy Blue,Titanium White,Chocolate Brown,Payne’s Grey
Bring in a touch of color against the cold with a girl planting winter pansies in a window box, a small domestic scene that adds moss green and a little purple to the mostly icy palette. Paint the window box and brick or wood ledge first, then place the girl kneeling or bending slightly with soil and small pansy flowers taking shape under her hands.
Each pansy only needs a few overlapping petal shapes in purple, yellow or white with a tiny dark center dot, scattered unevenly along the box rather than lined up in a neat row. Her gloved or bare hands pressing soil around one flower give the scene its focal point.
If the pansies start looking too uniform, vary two or three of them to a different color entirely, real window boxes rarely use just one shade.
For more small flower shapes to borrow for the pansies, the easy acrylic painting ideas include some simple petal techniques that work in oil too.
Palette: Moss Green,Cherry Red,Cadmium Yellow,Chocolate Brown
Bring back some energy with a girl sledding down a hill with her hair flying, a pose that depends entirely on diagonal lines to feel fast. Angle the hill and sled sharply across the canvas first, then place the girl leaning back slightly with her hair and scarf streaming behind her in long loose strokes that echo the slope’s direction.
Keep the sled itself simple, a flat wooden shape with curved runners, painted slightly blurred at the front edge to suggest speed. Her expression does not need detail, a small open mouth or wide eyes implied with just a stroke or two is plenty.
If the motion looks stiff, check that every line in the painting, the hair, the scarf, the snow spray behind the sled, points in roughly the same diagonal direction, a scene with lines fighting each other kills the sense of speed.
A dry brush flicked quickly behind the sled adds a scatter of flying snow without needing individual flakes.
Palette: Titanium White,Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Payne’s Grey
Shift to a smaller, warmer moment with a girl eating an orange on a sunny windowsill, a nice break in mood that adds a pop of citrus color into the winter palette. Paint the windowsill and sunlight first in warm cream and pale yellow, then seat her with knees drawn up, the orange held in both hands with one peeled section visible.
The orange itself only needs a rounded shape in warm orange with a few darker lines suggesting the peeled segments, no need to paint every individual pip or fiber. Let the sunlight catch the juice slightly, a small bright highlight where a drop might be running down her hand.
If the windowsill scene feels flat, add one plant or a second small object like a teacup nearby, just enough to suggest a lived in space without cluttering the composition.
Swap the orange for a clementine or a slice of lemon if you want a smaller, simpler shape to practice first.
Palette: Cadmium Orange,Cream,Cadmium Yellow,Moss Green
Return to the cold with a girl in a white fur hat at the edge of a frozen lake, a subject built around the contrast of soft fur texture against the flat hard surface of ice. Paint the lake first in broad flat strokes of icy blue and pale grey, then build the fur hat with small dabbing strokes of white and cream that catch the light differently from the smooth ice.
Her coat can stay a simpler flat shape so the fur hat remains the clear focal texture of the painting. Keep her stance still and upright, looking out across the lake rather than engaged in any action, which lets the texture contrast carry the whole piece.
If the fur looks too smooth, switch to a stiffer bristle brush and dab rather than stroke, the broken marks read as fur far better than a smooth blended patch ever will.
No white fur hat texture coming through, try scraping thin lines into the wet paint with the wooden end of a brush to suggest individual strands.
Palette: Titanium White,Icy Blue,Payne’s Grey,Chocolate Brown
Bring the scene into a warm kitchen with a girl arranging dried flowers at a farmhouse kitchen table, a subject that pairs well with muted, faded color since dried flowers never carry bright saturation. Paint the wooden table and kitchen background first in warm chocolate brown and cream, then build the dried flower bunch in soft dusty tones, faded pink, pale tan and muted moss green.
Her hands arranging the stems should overlap the vase slightly, suggesting she is mid motion rather than posed beside a finished bouquet. Keep the flower shapes looser and more irregular than fresh flowers, dried stems bend and some petals curl, so avoid painting anything too symmetrical here.
If the arrangement looks too stiff, tilt two or three stems at different angles rather than keeping them all upright and parallel.
For more faded floral color mixing, the vintage junk journal ideas lean on a similar dusty palette worth studying.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Moss Green,Cherry Red
Give yourself a landscape challenge with a girl walking through a birch forest in snow, a scene where the repeated vertical trunks create a natural rhythm around the figure. Paint the snow and sky first in pale cream and icy blue, then add the birch trunks as simple vertical white strokes with a few dark horizontal marks for the bark texture, varying their spacing so they do not look mechanically repeated.
Place the girl walking between two or three trunks rather than directly in the center, it makes the forest feel like it continues beyond the frame. Her coat in a warm color against all that cool white and pale trunk color is what anchors the eye on her first.
If the trunks start looking flat and identical, vary their width slightly and let one or two lean at a very slight angle, real birches rarely grow perfectly straight and uniform.
For more tree painting technique before tackling a whole forest, the trees and how to paint them guide covers bark texture step by step.
Palette: Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Icy Blue,Cherry Red
Move toward evening with a girl holding a lantern on a snowy path at dusk, a scene that pairs a small warm light against a deep blue dusk sky. Paint the dusk sky first in deep blue grey fading to a faint warm edge near the horizon, then build the snowy path beneath it before the figure and lantern go in last.
The lantern light should be the brightest point on the entire canvas, a small core of warm yellow surrounded by a soft orange halo that fades quickly into the surrounding blue. Let that light touch the nearest edge of her face and coat while the rest of her figure sits mostly in silhouette.
If the lantern glow looks weak, deepen the blue around it rather than brightening the lantern itself, the contrast between the two is what makes a small light source feel convincing in a dusk scene.
Swap the lantern for a simple glowing window in the distance if an actual lantern shape feels tricky to paint small.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Yellow,Cadmium Orange,Titanium White
Bring back some lightness with a girl dancing in socks across a wooden floor, a scene that benefits from a loose, blurred quality in the legs and skirt to suggest she is mid spin. Paint the wooden floor first with long warm brown strokes following its boards, then place her figure at an angle, arms slightly extended and skirt or dress flaring outward in one continuous sweeping shape.
Keep her feet and ankles loose rather than carefully drawn, since socks sliding across a smooth floor rarely hold a sharp, static pose. A slight double image or softened edge along the flaring skirt helps sell the sense of motion without needing to paint an actual blur effect.
If the spin looks static, add one diagonal shadow stretching across the floor beneath her at an angle that does not match her upright stance exactly, that small mismatch reads as movement to the eye.
A soft round brush dragged quickly through wet paint along the skirt’s edge keeps that line loose rather than crisp.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Cherry Red,Titanium White
Add an interior setting with a girl sketching in a museum gallery on a winter afternoon, a scene that gives you a chance to paint a hint of framed art on the wall without needing full detail in it. Paint the gallery walls first in a cool muted color, then add one or two loosely suggested framed paintings as simple rectangles of color before the figure goes in seated on a bench with a sketchbook on her lap.
Keep her focus clearly directed at whatever she is sketching, a tilted head and lowered eyes, with the sketchbook itself just a pale rectangle and a few scribbled marks rather than a legible drawing. The gallery’s quiet, even lighting means shadows stay soft here rather than dramatic.
If the framed paintings pull too much attention, keep their colors muted and their edges soft, they should read as background shapes, not separate artworks competing with her.
For a companion subject in graphite instead of oil, the girl pencil drawing ideas cover a similar seated sketching pose.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Cream,Chocolate Brown,Icy Blue
Return outdoors briefly with a girl wrapped in a blanket on a cafe terrace, a scene that pairs a warm drink and a thick blanket against a cold city backdrop. Paint the terrace furniture and background buildings loosely first in muted grey and cream, then wrap the girl in a thick blanket over her shoulders with a cup resting on the small table beside her.
Let steam rise gently from the cup in one or two soft white strokes, echoing the same technique used for the thermos scene earlier in this list, which keeps your technique consistent across the set. Her posture should look settled and unhurried, shoulders relaxed under the blanket’s weight rather than huddled against the cold.
If the background city buildings distract from her, soften their edges further and reduce their contrast, a terrace scene works best when the city stays a quiet backdrop rather than a competing subject.
Swap the cafe table for a simple outdoor bench if a full terrace setting feels like too much for one sitting.
Palette: Cream,Payne’s Grey,Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red
Bring in some rural charm with a girl with a basket of eggs crossing a snowy farmyard, a scene that gives you a small practical detail, the basket, to anchor the composition. Paint the farmyard buildings and snow first in warm brown and cool white, then place her mid stride with the basket held at her hip, a few pale eggs just visible among straw inside it.
Keep the eggs simple, small ovals in cream and pale brown nestled together rather than lined up neatly, which looks more natural against loosely painted straw. Her boots pressing into the snow can carry a few simple tracks behind her to suggest the path she has already crossed.
If the farmyard feels empty, add one small background detail like a fence post or a distant barn door, just enough to suggest a working farm without crowding the main figure.
A fine brush loaded with warm white adds the final highlight along each egg’s curved top.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Titanium White,Cream,Payne’s Grey
Bring in more structure with a girl in a ballet wrap sweater stretching at the barre, a scene where the straight horizontal barre line gives you a strong anchor to build the whole pose around. Paint the studio wall and mirror first in pale cool tones, then add the wooden barre as one confident horizontal line before placing her figure extended along it in a long stretching pose.
The wrap sweater should drape loosely over her leotard, painted in soft folds that follow the direction of her stretch rather than hanging straight down. Her extended leg and pointed foot are the trickiest part of this pose, so measure the leg’s length against her torso before committing, a stretched leg often needs to look longer than feels natural to get the extension right.
If the mirror reflection behind her feels like too much to add, leave it as a soft pale wall instead, the pose carries the scene without it.
Swap the barre for a simple window ledge if ballet equipment is unfamiliar to paint.
Palette: Cream,Chocolate Brown,Icy Blue,Titanium White
Near the end of the list, slow down again with a girl watching snowfall from under a big black umbrella, a composition built on strong contrast between the dark umbrella shape and the pale snowy scene around it. Paint the background snow and soft grey sky first, then add the umbrella as one bold dark dome shape overhead, its curve the single strongest line in the whole picture.
Her figure sits mostly sheltered beneath it, a small patch of warm coat color peeking out from under the dark dome. Snowflakes falling around the umbrella’s edge, painted with the lightest touch of a dry brush, help the dark shape feel surrounded by the scene rather than flat against it.
If the umbrella’s curve looks lopsided, check both edges against the handle’s vertical line, they should mirror each other at roughly the same angle on either side.
A toothbrush flicked lightly with white paint gives a fine scatter of distant snowflakes beyond the umbrella’s reach.

Close the list with a girl on a sled pulled by a big shaggy dog, a lively scene that combines motion and character in one frame. Paint the snowy ground and trailing path first with a few diagonal streaks to suggest speed, then build the dog as a large, loose shaggy shape in warm brown, its legs mid stride and head leaning slightly forward into the pull.
Seat the girl on the sled behind the dog, her coat bundled and her hands gripping a simple rope line that connects her to the dog’s harness. Keep the dog’s fur loose and textured with short choppy strokes rather than smooth fur, since a shaggy coat reads better broken up than blended flat.
If the dog’s scale looks wrong next to the girl, compare its shoulder height to her seated knee, a big sled dog should sit close to that height for the pull to look believable.
For more dog poses and fur texture tricks, the reindeer drawing ideas cover similar shaggy winter fur even though the animal differs.

What to Do Next
Pick one scene that matches the mood you want to sit in for an afternoon, start with the background and the biggest shapes, and let the figure go in last once the light and color around her feel right. A small canvas and a limited palette make every one of these finishable today, so choose the pose that pulls you in first and begin.
Frequently Asked Questions
What oil paint colors work best for winter girl paintings?
Icy blue, chocolate brown, cream and cherry red cover most winter scenes well. Add moss green and a pale sky blue for variety, and mix warmer neutrals from these rather than buying extra tubes.
How do you keep a painted face simple in oil?
Block the head shape first, then add only the brow, nose and jaw line with three or four confident strokes. Turning the face to a profile or away from the viewer removes most of the pressure to get features exact.
What size canvas suits a one sitting oil painting?
A small canvas around eight by ten inches finishes comfortably in one sitting. Anything larger needs more drying time between layers, which breaks the quick, loose approach these scenes depend on.
How do you paint convincing snow in oil without it looking flat?
Vary the whites with small amounts of blue, cream or grey mixed in rather than using pure white everywhere. A palette knife dragged lightly across the surface also catches real texture and light unevenly, like real snow.
Can these winter girl painting ideas work in acrylic instead of oil?
Yes, the same compositions and color mixing translate directly to acrylic. Work a little faster since acrylic dries quickly, and keep a spray bottle nearby to stop the paint from stiffening before you blend edges.
