Still life painting is where a quiet table turns into a small world. Winter gives you the best props for it: a split pomegranate, a teapot gone cold, a candle half burned down, wool still warm from the needles. Every arrangement below is a tiny scene with a hint of someone just there, a cat, a hand, a window, a slice taken, so the painting feels lived in rather than staged.
Work from your own table or windowsill where you can, and keep the light low and warm. Below are 29 setups in order of how much they ask of you, each one built to finish on a small canvas in a single sitting.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Split pomegranate on a pewter plate beside a silver knife is the easiest way into this whole list, because the shapes are simple and the colour does the talking. Block in the plate as a flattened oval of grey-blue first, then lay the pomegranate halves as two rounded forms before you touch a single seed. Mix your pomegranate red from alizarin crimson and a little burnt sienna so it reads warm rather than sugary.
Work the seeds last, as loose dabs rather than painted one by one, and let some blur into the shadow side. The pewter plate is where beginners overwork things: keep it to three tones, a cool grey, a near white highlight and a darker edge, and resist blending them smooth.
If pewter feels fussy, swap it for a plain white plate and let the fruit carry the colour instead. Compare the width of one pomegranate half against the plate before you commit to size, since this one small check keeps the whole arrangement from drifting too large or too small on the canvas.
Finish with one bright fleck of white on the knife blade, it reads as metal from across the room.

Teapot and two pears on a linen cloth by a frosty window brings a light source into the mix, which changes how you build the whole painting. Set your eye level low, as if you are sitting at the table, so the window sits high and the pear shadows fall long across the cloth toward you. Block the teapot as a simple round body and spout shape before adding its handle, and keep the linen as loose folds rather than crisp lines.
Paint the window light first as a pale, cool wash behind everything, then build the teapot and pears slightly darker than they will end up, since oil paint often looks lighter once it dries. The pears should sit a little apart rather than touching, so each throws its own small shadow onto the cloth.
If a real window is not available, paint the light as a soft glow from one side of the canvas and keep it consistent across both pears. This idea pairs well with the step by step approach in oil painting for beginners step by step if you want more guidance on building up a winter scene in layers.
Keep the frost on the window to a few dry, scratchy strokes rather than a painted pattern.

A candlelit table with a half-eaten tart and a folded napkin asks you to think about where the light actually comes from, since one flame changes everything it touches. Place the candle to one side of the canvas rather than dead centre, and let its light fall warm across the tart and fade to near black at the far edge of the table. Block in the darkest shadows first with a thin wash, then build the lit shapes on top.
The tart itself only needs a few strokes: a golden crust edge, a darker filling, and one pale smear where the slice has been lifted away. Keep the flame itself small and bright, a single dab of warm white with a touch of yellow, surrounded by a soft orange glow rather than a hard circle.
If candlelight scenes feel tricky at first, start with a lamp instead and photograph the setup so the light stays consistent while you paint. The folded napkin is a good place to practise edges, since cloth in low light should stay soft rather than crisp.
Save your brightest white for the flame alone, nothing else in the painting should compete with it.

A jug of white anemones beside a bowl of walnuts gives you a nice contrast of soft petals against hard, textured shells. Paint the jug and bowl shapes first as flat blocks of colour, then add the anemones as loose clusters of white and pale lilac, each flower only three or four strokes. Leave the dark centres of the anemones until the petals have dried a little, otherwise the colours muddy together.
Walnuts are a good texture exercise: dab a mix of burnt umber and grey with a dry, stiff brush rather than painting each ridge, and let the brush marks do the texture for you. Group the walnuts loosely in the bowl rather than lining them up, so the shapes stay interesting.
If anemones are out of season, any simple white flower with a dark centre works the same way, even a daisy from a grocery bunch. Keep the background pale and quiet so the white petals have somewhere to stand out against.
Palette: Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Burnt Umber,Sap Green
Try a palette knife for the walnut shells instead of a brush, it drags the paint into rough little ridges that read as texture instantly.
Pears resting on a ball of moss green wool with knitting needles is where you really start thinking about one shape sitting on another, and how that changes the shadow underneath. Measure the pears against the wool ball before you paint: if a pear looks taller than the ball is wide, it will look wrong even if every brushstroke is lovely. Block the wool in first as a rounded mass of green, using circular strokes that follow the way yarn wraps.
Paint the pears next, sitting slightly into the wool rather than perched stiffly on top, with a soft core shadow where they meet. The knitting needles are two thin lines of grey or pale wood colour, added last with a steady, loaded brush in one or two single passes rather than built up stroke by stroke.
If wool is hard to get the texture of, try short dashes of slightly varied green rather than one flat colour, it reads as yarn from a short distance. A single stray strand of wool trailing off the ball adds a nice sense of someone having just put it down.
Palette: Sap Green,Naples Yellow,Burnt Sienna,Titanium White
A cat sniffing a bowl of pomegranates on a velvet cloth brings the first real living presence into the list, and a cat’s pose is simpler to paint than its fur detail suggests. Build the cat as a few soft, rounded shapes, a curved back, a tucked paw, an alert ear, before you worry about any markings. Its nose should sit just at the edge of the bowl, close enough to suggest curiosity without touching the fruit.
Paint the velvet cloth with long, soft strokes in a deep colour, burgundy or dark green work well, and let it catch a little light where it folds near the bowl. The pomegranates themselves can stay fairly simple here since the cat is the real subject, just rounded red forms with a few darker seeds showing at a crack.
If your own cat will not sit still, a photograph on your phone propped against a mug works just as well as a live model. Keep the cat’s eyes as two small, bright dots, they carry most of the personality in the whole painting.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Alizarin Crimson,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White
A glass of red wine, cheese and grapes on a wooden board is a classic for a reason: it teaches transparency, which nothing else on this list quite does the same way. Paint the board and background first, then glaze the wine glass over the top with a thin, transparent mix of alizarin crimson and a touch of Payne’s grey, letting the board colour show faintly through the glass itself. The glass stem is just two careful vertical strokes, nothing more.
The cheese wedge wants a warm cream base with one or two darker lines suggesting its rind, and the grapes work best as loose round dabs of varied green or purple rather than each one outlined separately. Let a couple of grapes overlap the edge of the board for depth.
If transparency feels daunting on a first try, paint the wine glass as a simple dark red shape and add a single bright highlight down one side, it reads as glass well enough. A wedge of lemon beside the cheese adds a nice bright note if you want one more colour in the mix.
Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Naples Yellow,Sap Green,Burnt Umber
A blue and white ginger jar with a sprig of winter jasmine is a good one for practising pattern without letting it take over the painting. Block the jar’s shape first as a plain round form in white, then add the blue pattern afterward with a small brush and loose, confident marks, a few swirls and dots rather than an exact copy of any real pattern. Stepping back often while you paint the pattern keeps it from creeping into fussy detail.
The jasmine sprig should go in last, thin dark green stems with small white or pale yellow flowers dabbed on with the tip of the brush. Keep the sprig a little loose and leaning rather than perfectly upright, it reads as more natural that way.
If blue and white porcelain feels like too much pattern for a first attempt, paint the jar as a plain cream or celadon vase instead and let the jasmine carry the interest. A single petal fallen on the sill beside the jar adds a nice quiet detail.
Palette: Ultramarine Blue,Titanium White,Sap Green,Naples Yellow
Quinces in a copper pan on a kitchen windowsill is where metal reflection becomes the real subject, so think about where your light source sits before you mix a single colour. If the light comes from the window on one side, the copper pan should carry a warm streak on that side and a cooler, darker edge on the other, with a soft reflection of the quinces’ yellow showing faintly in the metal.
Paint the pan first as a simple curved shape in warm orange-brown, then add the quinces on top as lumpy, irregular rounds, quinces are rarely symmetrical and that is exactly what makes them interesting to paint. Let a little of the pan’s copper colour bounce into the shadow side of each quince.
If a copper pan is not to hand, any dark metal bowl will give a similar reflective challenge, just adjust the base colour. The windowsill behind can stay almost empty, a pale wash and a hint of glass, so the warm colours of the pan and fruit do the work.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cadmium Orange,Naples Yellow,Payne’s Grey
A book left open beside a teacup and a pair of reading glasses tells a small story of someone who just stepped away, and that quiet absence is the whole point of the painting. Paint the book’s pages as a simple pale wedge shape rather than trying to suggest actual text, a few faint grey lines across the open pages are enough to read as print from a distance.
The teacup should sit at a slight angle to the book, with a thin curl of steam if the tea is still fresh, painted as one soft, almost transparent stroke rising and fading. The reading glasses are the trickiest part: keep the lenses as two simple ovals with a single bright highlight, and let the frame be just one confident dark line rather than a careful outline.
If glasses are hard to get right, swap them for a bookmark ribbon trailing from the pages instead, it tells a similar small story with far less risk. This kind of quiet tabletop scene pairs well with the ideas in observational drawing sketchbook ideas if you want to sketch a few compositions first before committing to paint.
Palette: Naples Yellow,Payne’s Grey,Burnt Umber,Titanium White
A vase of hellebores with fallen petals on a marble ledge is a lesson in restraint, since hellebores droop and nod rather than stand upright like most flowers. Let each bloom face a slightly different direction, some tilted down toward the ledge, which is closer to how they actually grow than a tidy upward bunch. Block the vase first as a simple glass or ceramic shape, then build the flowers from the centre outward.
The marble ledge wants thin, broken streaks of grey and white dragged across a pale base, using a dry brush so the streaks stay loose rather than becoming solid lines. A couple of fallen petals scattered near the vase’s base finish the sense of quiet decay that hellebores naturally carry through winter.
If hellebores are out of reach, any pale, downward-facing flower works the same way, even a wilting rose gives the same mood. Keep the petal colour muted, dusty pink or pale green rather than bright white, since hellebores rarely read as pure white in real light.
Palette: Titanium White,Sap Green,Payne’s Grey,Alizarin Crimson
Brass candlesticks with dripping candles and a plate of figs puts two kinds of shine side by side, brass and candle wax, and each needs a different touch. Paint the brass with warm yellow-gold highlights against a darker base, letting the highlights sit as small, sharp dabs rather than long strokes, since brass catches light in little points. The wax drips down the candle sides are best painted wet into wet, a pale stroke pulled downward while the base colour is still soft.
Figs come next, each one a soft purple-brown oval with a single pale slit where the fruit shows through, painted in just two or three strokes per fig. Keep the figs slightly duller than the candlesticks so the brass stays the brightest thing on the table.
If dripping wax feels too fiddly for a first attempt, paint the candles plain and unlit instead, the brass alone still carries plenty of interest. A single fig cut in half beside the whole ones adds a nice extra note of colour.
Palette: Naples Yellow,Burnt Sienna,Alizarin Crimson,Payne’s Grey
A burgundy ranunculus bunch in a stoneware jug beside a teapot gives you two rounded forms to balance against each other, so start by deciding which one sits slightly forward in the composition. Ranunculus flowers are made of many tight, overlapping petals, but you do not need to paint each one: block the whole bloom as a rounded mass of dark red first, then add just a few lighter petal edges on top with the tip of a small brush.
The stoneware jug stays simple, a matte, slightly uneven surface painted with flat, muted strokes rather than the shine you would give glass or metal. Place the teapot a little behind and to one side so the flowers remain the main event.
If ranunculus are unavailable, dark red roses or peonies give a similar rounded, petal-heavy shape to practise on. Deepen the shadow where the jug meets the table so the whole group feels grounded rather than floating.
Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Burnt Umber,Sap Green,Titanium White
A loaf, a wedge of cheese and an apple on a rustic table is one of the oldest still life groupings for good reason, and it is a fine place to practise placing three different textures next to each other. Start with the loaf since it is the largest shape, using a dry, textured brush for the crust and a smoother stroke for the softer top. The cheese wedge sits lower and flatter, with one darker edge marking its rind.
The apple is the simplest shape of the three but the hardest to get the colour right on: build it in at least two tones, a warm red-orange on the lit side and a cooler green-red in shadow, blended softly where they meet rather than left as a hard line. A few crumbs scattered near the loaf suggest it has just been cut.
If a whole loaf is too large a shape to start with, a single bread roll works the same way at a smaller scale. Keep the rustic table itself loose and textured, long dry strokes of brown are enough to suggest old wood.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Naples Yellow,Sap Green,Alizarin Crimson
A bowl of clementines beside a folded cream wool scarf pairs the brightest colour on this whole list against the softest texture, so lean into that contrast rather than smoothing it away. Paint the clementines as simple round dabs of warm orange, each one slightly different in tone, with a tiny fleck of white left unpainted or added last for the shine of their skin. A couple of leaves still attached to the stems add a welcome green note.
The wool scarf wants loose, folded strokes in cream and pale grey, following the direction the fabric actually falls rather than painting each fold with equal weight. Let the scarf’s edge overlap the bowl slightly so the two objects feel like part of the same small scene.
If clementines are not in season, any small citrus works the same way, even a single orange cut into segments. Keep the background very plain here, since the orange against cream already carries the whole painting.
Palette: Cadmium Orange,Titanium White,Sap Green,Payne’s Grey
A sliced persimmon on a celadon plate with chopsticks brings a different palette into the mix, since celadon’s pale green-grey needs careful handling so it does not read as plain grey. Mix it from white, a touch of sap green and a whisper of blue, and keep the plate’s shading subtle, since celadon glaze reflects light softly rather than sharply.
The persimmon slice itself is painted in two stages: block the flat orange flesh first, then add the darker seed shapes and the thin pale rind edge once the base colour has had a moment to set, so the darker marks stay crisp rather than muddying in. The chopsticks are two long, steady strokes laid down in one confident pass.
If celadon feels like an odd colour to mix, a plain white plate still lets the persimmon stand out just as well. Keep the composition a little off-centre, with the plate sitting toward one side of the canvas, it feels more like a real moment at a table than a formal arrangement.
Palette: Cadmium Orange,Sap Green,Titanium White,Burnt Umber
Brown eggs in a ceramic bowl with a sprig of rosemary is a quiet, forgiving subject, good for a morning when you want something calm to paint. Eggs are deceptively simple ovals, but their shading is subtle: keep the shadow side only slightly darker than the lit side, since eggshell has very little contrast compared to fruit or metal. Group three or four eggs loosely in the bowl rather than lining them up evenly.
The ceramic bowl itself should be matte and plain, a flat mid-tone with just one soft highlight along its rim. The rosemary sprig goes in last, thin dark green needles painted with the very tip of a small brush or even the end of the brush handle dragged through wet paint for texture.
If brown eggs are not available, white eggs work the same way with the shadows mixed slightly cooler. This is a good subject to try the quick version of: ten minutes gets you the bowl and eggs blocked in loosely, while forty minutes lets you add the rosemary and refine the eggshell’s soft highlights properly.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Naples Yellow,Sap Green,Titanium White
A pair of leather gloves and a pear on a hallway table suggests someone has just come in from the cold, and that small human trace is what makes this one worth painting. Start with the gloves, since their folds are the most demanding part: use a dark warm brown and let the fingers overlap loosely rather than lying flat and separate, with one glove’s cuff turned back to show a paler lining colour.
The pear sits beside or slightly on top of the gloves, a simple warm green-yellow form that gives the eye somewhere soft to rest after the gloves’ darker leather. Keep the hallway table itself plain, a few quiet strokes of wood tone are enough.
If leather gloves are not to hand, a scarf or a single mitten gives the same sense of someone having just arrived. Leave one glove finger slightly curled rather than straight, it reads as far more natural and lived in than a perfectly flat pair.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Sap Green,Naples Yellow,Payne’s Grey
A glass vase of paperwhites with a sleeping cat behind it builds the whole composition around depth, since the cat sits further back and slightly out of focus compared to the flowers up front. Paint the cat first as a soft, blurred mass of warm grey or tabby tones, using a slightly drier brush and less detail than you would for a cat in the foreground, since things further away naturally read as less sharp.
The paperwhites come forward with crisp, clean white petals and thin green stems rising from a glass vase, the glass itself needing only a pale outline and a couple of vertical highlights to read as transparent. Keep the stems slightly uneven in height, paperwhites rarely grow perfectly matched.
If a sleeping cat is hard to arrange, a folded blanket shape in the background gives a similar soft, out of focus form to balance against the sharp flowers. This contrast between crisp foreground and soft background is worth practising again with other flowers once this one feels comfortable.
Palette: Titanium White,Sap Green,Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey
Tea pouring from a pot into a glass cup with lemon slices is one of the more advanced setups here, since you are painting liquid in motion as well as a transparent object. Work from a photograph rather than trying to catch a real pour, and paint the stream of tea as one continuous, slightly curved stroke of warm amber, thinner at the top where it leaves the spout and slightly wider where it meets the cup.
The glass cup itself needs a few careful vertical highlights down its side to read as glass, with the tea inside painted a shade darker than the stream to suggest it is already pooling. A lemon slice floating on top adds a bright pale yellow note and a good place to practise a confident, single highlight.
If painting a pour feels too ambitious for one sitting, paint the cup already full and steaming instead, it is a simpler version of the same warm, cosy scene. Keep the background soft and plain so the amber tea stays the brightest colour in the painting.
Palette: Naples Yellow,Burnt Sienna,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey
A chocolate cake with one slice taken on a cake stand is a satisfying one to paint because the missing slice does most of the storytelling for you. Build the cake as a simple dark cylinder first, then cut the slice shape out of it with a lighter value, showing the layered inside in two or three warm brown tones rather than painting every crumb.
The cake stand underneath should catch a little light along its rim and stem, a few careful pale strokes against the stand’s darker base colour are enough to suggest glass or metal without overworking it. A light dusting of icing sugar can be added last with the very tip of a dry brush loaded with white, tapped rather than stroked onto the surface.
If a full cake feels like too much for one sitting, paint just the single slice on its own plate instead, which keeps all the same colour and texture lessons in a smaller, quicker package. Keep the crumbs scattered near the base loose and few, three or four dabs read better than a dozen fussy marks.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Burnt Sienna,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey
A bowl of chestnuts beside a knife and a linen napkin is a good subject for practising matte, dry textures after some of the shinier setups earlier in this list. Chestnuts have a dull, slightly dusty shine rather than a hard gloss, so keep your highlights soft and broken rather than sharp and bright. Paint each nut as a simple rounded shape with a flatter side, and vary the brown tones slightly from one to the next.
Group the chestnuts loosely in the bowl with a couple spilling just over the edge onto the napkin, which helps tie the two objects together. The knife beside them needs only a thin, confident line for its blade and a slightly thicker stroke for its handle.
If whole chestnuts are hard to find, walnuts or hazelnuts give a similar dry, matte texture to practise. Fold the linen napkin loosely rather than pressing it flat, soft diagonal creases read as fabric far better than straight lines.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Burnt Sienna,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey
A hand reaching for a pear from a white bowl is the most ambitious subject on this list so far, since hands are notoriously hard to paint well, but a simplified approach makes it manageable. Work from a photograph of your own hand reaching toward a bowl, and block the hand in as a few simple connected shapes first, the palm, the fingers grouped in twos rather than drawn individually, before adding any shading.
Keep the skin tone mixed from just a few colours, Naples yellow, a touch of burnt sienna and white, adjusted warmer or cooler depending on the light, and avoid outlining the fingers with a hard line. The white bowl underneath should stay simple, with soft grey shadows rather than any sharp pattern, so it does not compete with the hand.
If the hand feels too difficult on a first attempt, crop the composition so only the fingertips and the pear show, which keeps the same gesture with far less anatomy to get right. A loose, confident touch matters more here than exact accuracy.
Palette: Naples Yellow,Burnt Sienna,Sap Green,Titanium White
A mirror reflecting a candle and a vase of tulips doubles your composition in one small canvas, so plan both the real objects and their reflected versions before you start mixing paint. Paint the real candle and tulips first with full colour and contrast, then paint the mirrored versions slightly softer and slightly cooler in tone, since reflections rarely carry quite the same intensity as the thing itself.
The mirror’s frame can be a simple dark edge running down one side of the canvas, just enough to tell the eye where the real world ends and the reflection begins. Keep the tulips themselves loose, a few confident curved strokes for each petal rather than careful outlines, since tulips have simple, clean shapes to begin with.
If painting a full reflection feels like too much, angle the mirror so only the candle’s glow shows in it rather than the whole vase, which is a simpler version of the same trick. This idea works well alongside the glowing, low-light scenes in winter night painting ideas if you enjoy working with candlelight and reflected light together.
Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Cadmium Orange,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White
Red apples and a jug of milk on a farmhouse table brings the whole palette back to something simple and bold after a few more detailed scenes. Paint the milk jug first since its white surface depends entirely on the colours around it, mixing a pale grey-blue for its shadow side and letting the warm tablecloth or wood reflect faintly into its lower edge.
The apples go in next, each one built from at least two reds, a warmer one toward the light and a cooler, almost maroon tone in shadow, blended softly where they meet. Let a couple of apples overlap slightly rather than sitting in a neat row, since overlapping shapes read as more natural and help tie the group together.
If a milk jug is not available, a white mug gives the same lesson in painting a pale object against a warm background. Keep the farmhouse table itself loose and textured, a few dry, dragged strokes of brown are enough to suggest old wood without detailing every grain.
Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Titanium White,Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey
A sugar bowl, cream jug and cups on a silver tray asks you to paint several small reflective objects together, so decide on one light direction and keep every highlight consistent with it. Block each piece as a simple rounded shape first, the sugar bowl slightly wider, the cream jug with its small curved spout, the cups smallest of all, before adding any shine.
The silver tray underneath is where the real challenge sits: paint it as a dark, cool grey base, then add sharp, bright highlights only where the light catches an edge, and let the other objects’ colours reflect faintly into the tray’s surface in soft smudges. Too many highlights will make the silver look like plastic, so use them sparingly.
If a full tea set feels like a lot for one sitting, paint just the sugar bowl and one cup together first, the same reflective lessons apply at a smaller scale. A single sugar cube or spoon resting against the bowl adds a nice small detail to finish with.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Naples Yellow,Burnt Umber
A stack of old books, a candle and a dried hydrangea is a quiet, muted subject, good for practising a whole painting in close, related tones rather than bold contrast. Build the book stack first as simple rectangular blocks, varying their sizes and letting them sit slightly askew rather than perfectly stacked, with just a hint of worn, faded colour on their spines.
The dried hydrangea head goes on top or beside the stack, painted as a soft, papery cluster of muted pink, cream and faded green, using a dry brush dabbed rather than dragged, since dried flowers have a crumpled, textured look quite different from fresh ones. The candle beside it needs only a simple cream cylinder and a small flame.
If dried hydrangea is hard to find, any faded or dried flower head gives the same soft, papery texture. Keep the whole painting’s colours close together in value, this is a scene about quiet warmth rather than drama, and too much contrast will fight that mood.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Naples Yellow,Sap Green,Alizarin Crimson
A plate of oysters with lemon wedges on crushed ice is the most technically demanding subject on this list, mixing shell texture, wet flesh and icy cold all in one small scene. Paint the crushed ice first as broken, angular strokes of white and pale blue, leaving plenty of bare canvas or light undertone showing through to suggest its glassy, irregular surface.
The oyster shells sit on top, each one a rough, ridged grey-brown exterior painted with a dry brush for texture, opening to a smooth, pearly interior where the flesh sits, this inner shine is the main highlight of the whole painting and deserves your cleanest white. A lemon wedge or two adds a sharp note of yellow against all the cool greys.
If oysters are hard to paint from life, work from a clear reference photograph rather than guessing the shell structure, since the ridges follow a real and fairly consistent pattern. Keep the number of oysters small, four or five read as generous without overcrowding the plate.

A wicker basket of pinecones and wool socks by the fireplace closes the list with a cosy jumble of textures, basket weave, rough pinecones and soft knitted wool, all in one warm corner. Start with the basket, using short, crisscrossing strokes to suggest the weave pattern rather than painting individual strands, and keep its colour a warm, mid-toned brown.
The pinecones go in next, built from small, overlapping dabs of brown and grey to suggest their layered scales, with the darkest ones tucked toward the bottom of the pile. The wool socks draped over the basket’s edge are painted with soft, loose strokes in a contrasting colour, deep red or cream work well against the browns around them.
If a fireplace setting is not available, the same basket grouping works just as well on any floor or hearth-like surface with warm light falling across it. Let a hint of orange firelight glow faintly at the edge of the canvas to tie this final scene back to the candlelit warmth running through the whole list.

What to Do Next
Pick whichever scene matches something already sitting on your own table or sill, set it up near a window for natural light, and start on a small canvas with the largest shapes blocked in first. One finished painting makes the next one easier, so keep this list for the next quiet afternoon too.
Frequently Asked Questions
What oil paint colours do I need for a winter still life painting?
A small warm palette covers most of these ideas: alizarin crimson, burnt sienna, burnt umber, sap green, Naples yellow, Payne’s grey and titanium white. Mixing from these keeps every scene feeling related, which matters when you paint several winter still lifes in a row.
How do I stop my still life painting from looking flat?
Flatness usually comes from equal contrast everywhere, so push your darkest darks and lightest lights into just one or two spots, like a candle flame or a glass highlight. Keep the rest of the painting in closer, quieter tones around that single bright point.
Can I paint a still life from a photograph instead of real objects?
Yes, a clear photograph works well, especially for trickier subjects like a pouring cup of tea or a reaching hand where holding a pose is not practical. Natural light photographed near a window still gives the most believable shadows to paint from.
How long does a small still life painting usually take?
Most of these ideas finish in one sitting of around one to two hours on a small canvas, once the paint layers stay thin and the brushwork stays loose. Simpler subjects like a single pear or a bowl of eggs can finish in well under an hour.
What is the easiest way to start a still life painting?
Block in the largest shapes first as flat, simplified colour before adding any detail, working from dark to light and background to foreground. This keeps proportions and composition settled early, so later detail work has a sound structure to sit on.
