Horse painting in winter gives you everything oil paint does best: soft breath clouding in cold air, a thick coat catching low light, snow that goes blue and violet in the shadows instead of flat white. Every idea here keeps things calm and quiet, a paddock, a stable door, a field shelter, with no tack or show gear in sight, just horses and ponies being horses in the cold.
Work on a small canvas so each one stays a single sitting, and let your brushstrokes stay visible rather than blending everything smooth. Scroll through all 31 and pick whichever horse is already asking to be painted.

Start a chestnut horse painting with the big shapes only: a loose oval for the body, a longer oval for the head and neck, blocked in with a thin wash of burnt sienna mixed with a touch of raw umber. Keep the navy blanket as one simple shape laid over the back and barrel, painted with ultramarine and a little black before you add any coat color around its edges.
Work background to foreground, snowy paddock first, then the horse, then the blanket on top, finishing with the mane and the darkest shadow under the belly. The usual mistake is making the blanket too bright and flat; knock it back with a touch of burnt umber mixed in so it reads as fabric, not plastic.
If you do not have navy on hand, mix ultramarine with a little black and a touch of burnt umber for a softer, more believable blanket blue. Keep your brush loaded and let the strokes show on the blanket’s folds rather than smoothing them out.
Finish with a few lighter strokes of titanium white mixed with the chestnut color along the top edge of the back, where the strongest light falls.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Ultramarine Blue,Titanium White,Raw Umber
Think about where your light sits before you touch the canvas: a low sunrise behind the horse means the breath cloud and the mane edges catch warm pink light while the body stays in cooler shadow. Block in the sky first with soft blends of pale pink, peach and icy blue, then silhouette the horse’s head and neck against it in a warm dark brown.
Paint the body next, keeping most of it in shadow tones, and save the breath cloud for last. Use a dry, barely loaded brush with titanium white softened with a touch of the sky pink to dab the cloud shape near the nostrils, letting the edges stay soft and uneven rather than a hard puff.
The common slip is painting the breath too solid and round; keep it wispy and let some canvas or background show through the edges. A fan brush helps if you have one, dragging the white gently outward from the nostril.
Work the whole sky and horse while the paint is still wet so the colors can blend slightly where breath meets sky.
Palette: Pale Pink,Peach,Van Dyke Brown,Titanium White
A soft fan brush, even a cheap one, gives breath clouds and mane wisps a much more natural edge than a flat or round brush alone.
A Shetland pony is really a study in roundness: round barrel, round rump, short thick legs, all wrapped in a coat so dense it reads almost like fur rather than hair. Block the whole pony in as one rounded shape first in a mix of raw umber and burnt sienna, keeping the silhouette squat and compact rather than horse-proportioned.
Build the shaggy coat texture with short, choppy strokes of a stiff filbert brush, working from the darkest underside up toward the lighter tips, letting some strokes stand proud with thick paint. This is the moment to compare: the pony’s whole body should be barely taller than its own head is long, which keeps it looking properly pony-shaped rather than like a small horse.
Snow goes in last, scattered in small white dabs caught in the coat and piled softly at the hooves. If the coat starts looking too smooth, go back in with the edge of a palette knife to drag a few ragged strands.
Keep the whole pony low and close to the ground in your composition, it suits the breed.
Palette: Raw Umber,Burnt Sienna,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey
Painting a white horse against snow is mostly about shadow, not white paint, since the two should nearly vanish into each other except where cool grays and blues separate them. Lay the whole canvas with a soft gray-blue undertone first, snow and horse together, so neither one starts out stark white.
Build the horse’s form using only shadow tones, a mix of Payne’s grey and a touch of violet, placed under the belly, behind the legs and along the muscle lines, while the lit areas stay the same pale value as the snow around them. This is the one idea on the list where restraint matters most: if you overdefine the outline, the whole point disappears.
Save pure titanium white for just a few catch-lights, along the top of the back and the crest of the neck, so the eye can still find the horse without it looking cut out and pasted on.
If your gray mix turns muddy, add a touch more ultramarine and less brown to keep it cool and snowy rather than dirty.
Palette: Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Dioxazine Violet,Ultramarine Blue
Measure before you mix a single color: a foal’s legs are nearly as long as an adult horse’s already, so paint them long and a little gangly rather than shrinking the whole animal down to toy proportions. Block in the mare first as the larger, steadier shape, then tuck the foal’s smaller body in against her flank, overlapping the two outlines so they read as one connected group.
Keep the mare’s coloring a shade or two darker and more settled, burnt umber and raw sienna, while the foal gets a lighter, slightly fuzzier coat in pale sienna with soft dry-brushed edges. Frost goes into the grass at their feet with quick flicks of a dry brush loaded with titanium white.
The easiest mistake here is making the foal too small and round; keep those legs long even if the body looks a bit awkward, that awkwardness is exactly what reads as young.
If you are short on canvas space, crop in tight on just the two heads leaning together rather than the full bodies.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Raw Sienna,Titanium White,Sap Green
A rolling horse breaks every rule of the standing pose, so let the legs go up and splayed and the body twist onto its back or side rather than reaching for a tidy silhouette. Sketch the action first with a few quick charcoal or thinned-paint lines to find the diagonal of the spine before you block in any color.
Paint the horse’s body in one connected dark shape, chocolate brown, then push snow up around it in thick, textured white strokes using a palette knife rather than a brush, since knife marks read as flung, churned snow far better than smooth brushwork does.
Working quickly here helps: in ten minutes you can block the dark horse shape and the knife-textured snow and call it done, while a forty-minute version adds flying clumps of snow caught mid-air with small dabs of white and a hint of blue shadow under the rolling body to ground it.
Keep the legs loose and slightly blurred at the tips, as if still moving.
You Will Need
- palette knife for thick snow texture
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Titanium White,Cerulean Blue,Payne’s Grey
This is one of the gentler horse painting ideas to try once you have painted a single horse or two, since two necks crossing each other ask for careful overlap rather than just two separate animals side by side. Block in the farther horse first, slightly smaller and cooler in tone to push it back, then paint the nearer horse overlapping its neck and head on top.
Build the two coats in a chestnut and a dapple grey so they read as clearly separate animals even where they touch, and soften the exact spot where their necks meet with a dry brush blended lightly, since skin-to-skin contact should look soft, not like two hard edges meeting.
Snow stays minimal here, just a light dusting on their backs and a pale ground, to keep the focus on the pair.
If the composition feels crowded, crop in tight on just the two necks and heads rather than full bodies, it reads just as warm.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Raw Umber
A stable door painting gives you a built-in frame, so start with the door itself: a simple rectangle in weathered chocolate brown, split at the usual half-door height, with the horse’s head and neck emerging from the open top half. Paint the dark interior of the stable as a flat, nearly black shape behind the horse’s head, since that contrast is what makes the head pop forward.
Block the horse’s face next, keeping the eye and nostril as the darkest, most careful marks on the whole canvas, because a stable door composition lives or dies on whether that face feels alert and present. Snow falls outside in the background, painted as scattered small white dots flicked on with a nearly dry brush or an old toothbrush once everything else is dry.
If the falling snow looks too even, vary the dot sizes and leave some gaps, real snowfall is never uniform.
Finish with one or two pale highlights along the top of the door’s wood grain to suggest frost.
You Will Need
- old toothbrush for flicked snow
Palette: Van Dyke Brown,Ivory Black,Titanium White,Raw Sienna
Build this one around the color contrast first: a small figure in a cherry red coat against a muted winter palette is the whole point, so mix that red early and keep it pure and warm while everything else, pony, snow, fence, stays soft and grayed down. Block the pony’s body and head in simple shapes before adding the girl, since she should look like she is leaning into an already-believable animal, not the other way around.
Paint the carrot as one small, confident orange stroke between her mittened hand and the pony’s nose, it does not need detail, just the right shape and color in the right place.
Keep her coat as broad, flat color blocked in with a loaded flat brush, saving any folds for just two or three darker red lines rather than many, which keeps the whole figure reading as a quick, soft impression rather than a tight illustration.
If red feels too bold against your winter palette, mix in a touch of burnt umber to settle it, then add a pure highlight stroke only at the shoulder.
Palette: Cherry Red,Raw Sienna,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey
This idea asks you to zoom in close, so crop the whole canvas to just the head and part of the neck rather than a full body, which gives you room to actually paint the frost detail at a scale where it matters. Block the head shape first in a mid brown, then build the darkest shadows around the eye socket and under the jaw before adding any frost at all.
Paint the eyelashes with the very tip of a small round brush loaded with a dark, almost black mix, one stroke per lash rather than a scribbled clump, letting a few catch a tiny fleck of white at the tip for frost. Whiskers get the same treatment along the muzzle, fine single lines rather than a fuzzy mass.
The eye itself is the one place worth real patience: a dark pupil, a small white catch-light placed slightly off-center, and a thin warm reflection underneath is usually all it needs.
If your lines come out too thick, thin your paint slightly with a touch of medium so the brush glides rather than drags.
Palette: Raw Umber,Ivory Black,Titanium White,Burnt Sienna
A small round brush, even a liner brush meant for watercolor, gives far more control for individual lashes and whiskers than a standard oil brush.
Keep this one loose from the very first mark, since a galloping herd reads through motion and rhythm far more than through any single accurate horse. Block in a handful of overlapping dark shapes at different sizes and angles, using a bigger brush than feels comfortable, to suggest bodies in full stride without defining every leg.
Vary the eye level slightly as you place each horse so the herd feels like it is moving across uneven ground rather than lined up in a row, and let the ones further back blur slightly cooler and lighter to push them into the distance. Snow kicks up at their hooves in quick white dashes, dragged horizontally with a dry brush to suggest speed.
The common trap is tightening up and painting each horse in full detail, which kills the sense of movement; keep the back half of the herd almost abstract.
If you want more structure, paint one lead horse with a touch more detail and let the rest stay impressionistic around it.
Palette: Van Dyke Brown,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Cerulean Blue
Dappling is easier than it looks once you work in the right order: block the whole horse in a mid gray first, let it dry a little, then stipple darker gray spots on top with the side of a round brush dabbed rather than stroked, followed by a few lighter dabs for the highlight dapples. Too much dappling at once turns muddy, so go slower than feels natural and step back often.
Paint the bare winter oak behind the horse as a simple dark silhouette of trunk and a few thick branches, no need for individual twigs, with a light dusting of snow caught along the top edges of the branches. The horse should stand clearly in front of this darker tree shape so it does not get lost.
If your dapples start looking like spots rather than coat texture, soften a few edges with a dry clean brush right after placing them.
Finish with one warm highlight along the horse’s back where it catches any available light.
Palette: Neutral Grey,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Van Dyke Brown
A field shelter gives you a dark rectangular opening to work with, so paint that first as a flat dark shape, then place the pony’s head and shoulders emerging from it, lit from outside so the face catches more light than the body still in shadow. This light direction matters: since the opening is the only light source, the far side of the pony’s face should stay darker than the side nearest the opening.
Build the forelock, the tuft of mane falling over the forehead, with a few thick, choppy strokes rather than fine lines, then tip a few of those strokes with small dabs of titanium white for caught snow.
Keep the shelter’s wood simple, a few vertical plank lines in grayed brown, with a line of snow balanced along the roofline.
If the inside of the shelter looks too flat and empty, add one soft warm glow near the pony’s shoulder to suggest it has been standing there a while.
Palette: Raw Umber,Titanium White,Ivory Black,Burnt Sienna
Round hay bales are an easy shape to get wrong if you paint the circle too perfect, so rough up the outline slightly and build the texture with short, layered strokes of straw yellow and raw sienna going in slightly different directions, like real packed hay. Snow sits on top as a soft white cap, blended at the edges rather than sharply outlined.
Paint the horse’s body next, positioned with its head dipped down into the bale, and keep the neck’s bend believable by checking that the angle from poll to shoulder makes a smooth curve rather than a kink.
In ten minutes you can block bale, horse shape and snow cap and leave it there; a forty-minute version adds loose wisps of hay caught around the horse’s muzzle and a few scattered strands on the snowy ground.
If your yellows look too bright against the winter palette, mix in a touch of raw umber to settle the hay into the scene.
Palette: Raw Sienna,Raw Umber,Titanium White,Burnt Umber
The shaggy double mane on an Icelandic horse is the whole character of this painting, so give it more volume than feels natural and let the wind push it sideways across the neck in one clear direction, rather than painting it hanging neutrally down. Block the horse’s compact, sturdy body first, slightly stockier than a standard horse shape, then build the mane in thick layered strokes using a stiff brush or palette knife edge.
Paint the landscape behind as wide, simple bands, pale sky, a distant snowy ridge, foreground snow, keeping detail low so the mane and the horse’s thick coat stay the clear focus. Wind direction should read consistently across the whole painting: mane, tail and any loose snow should all blow the same way.
If the mane looks like a solid block rather than individual locks, drag a dry brush through it once it is partly dry to separate a few strands.
Keep the palette cool and a little desaturated to suit the bleak, open feel of the setting.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Raw Umber,Titanium White,Cerulean Blue
Painting ice on water is mostly about value, not detail, so leave a thin pale gray-white band across the surface of the trough before you paint anything else, letting the darker water color show only at the very edges where the horse has broken through to drink. Block the trough itself as a simple metal or wood shape, slightly reflective, with one or two cool highlights along its rim.
Paint the horse’s head bent down low toward the surface, checking that the angle from ear to muzzle creates a clean diagonal line down to the water, since a bent neck that looks stiff is usually the angle, not the shading.
A thin scratch or two through the wet paint with the end of your brush handle can suggest a crack in the ice without any extra mixing.
If the ice reads as too solid and opaque, thin the gray slightly so a hint of the water color underneath shows through.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Van Dyke Brown,Cerulean Blue
This is a strong value contrast idea, so commit to real black early, a mix of ivory black with a touch of burnt umber to keep it from going flat and dead, rather than easing into gray. Block the horse’s silhouette on the open hillside first as one confident dark shape, keeping the outline clean since it has nothing but pale snow to read against.
Paint the hillside in soft rolling bands of white and pale blue-gray, letting the slope rise gently behind the horse so it sits on solid ground rather than floating. A single warm highlight along the horse’s back, a touch of burnt sienna mixed into the black, keeps the coat from looking like a flat cutout.
The usual issue with painting black animals is losing all form in the shadow side; keep a slightly lighter black along the edges catching light so the body still reads as three-dimensional.
If pure black feels too harsh, warm it slightly with Van Dyke brown instead.
Palette: Ivory Black,Burnt Sienna,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey
Start with the wooden barn wall as a large, simple backdrop, vertical plank lines in weathered gray-brown, since this gives the mare and foal somewhere solid to lean into out of the wind. Block the mare’s body first, positioned side-on against the wall, then tuck the foal in close against her side, smaller and lighter in tone, overlapping her outline rather than standing fully separate.
This pairing works best from a slightly low eye level, looking up at the pair against the barn, which makes them feel sheltering and protective rather than small in a wide landscape. Snow piles softly along the base of the wall and dusts the barn roof above them.
If the two animals start blending into one confusing shape, separate them with one clear line of shadow where the foal’s back meets the mare’s belly.
Keep the barn wood muted so the warm coats of the two horses stay the brightest, warmest area of the canvas.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Raw Sienna,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey
Let the cherry red fleece blanket be the first color decision you make, mixing it bright and pure before anything else goes on the canvas so you can judge every other color against it. Block the pony’s body shape first in a simple brown, then lay the blanket over the back and barrel as one solid red shape, keeping its edges soft where it wraps around the belly.
Paint the hay the pony nibbles at as loose golden strokes near the muzzle, just enough suggestion of strands to read clearly without turning fussy, then build the snowy ground in cool white and pale blue beneath.
If the red blanket looks too flat against the rest of the scene, add one or two darker red shadow folds with a touch of burnt umber mixed in, and a single bright highlight stroke along the top edge.
Keep the background simple so the red stays the clear focal point of the whole piece.
Palette: Cherry Red,Raw Sienna,Titanium White,Cerulean Blue
Set your light source low and warm here, a dawn sun somewhere off to one side, which means the fence posts and the horse’s near side catch warm pink-gold light while everything facing away stays in cool blue shadow. Block in the fence line first as a simple receding row of posts, getting smaller toward the horizon, since that line of perspective is what gives the painting its sense of distance.
Paint the horse mid-stride alongside the fence, front and back legs extended in opposite directions to suggest the trot, with its near side catching that same warm dawn light as the fence posts.
Frost on the fence rail and grass gets a few dry-brushed white touches only where the light hits directly, leaving the shadow side of each post a cool gray-violet.
If the trotting legs look stiff, loosen the furthest leg’s edge slightly with a soft dry brush so it reads as caught mid-motion rather than frozen still.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Pale Pink,Dioxazine Violet,Titanium White
A Shire horse’s feathered legs, that thick fringe of hair around the lower leg and hoof, are the detail that makes this breed recognizable, so give them real volume with layered, slightly curling strokes rather than a thin fringe. Block the massive body shape first, broader and heavier through the chest and shoulder than a standard riding horse, before working down to the legs.
Deep snow should come up past the lower leg, so paint a soft white line partway up each leg where snow has piled against it, with a few rounded snowball shapes caught in the feathering itself, dabbed in with thick titanium white using a palette knife.
Check proportion by comparing: the legs on a Shire look thick enough that the horse reads as powerful rather than delicate, closer in bulk to its own neck than to a lighter breed’s legs.
If the feathering looks too neat, scruff it up with a dry stiff brush dragged against the direction of the hair.
You Will Need
- palette knife for snowball texture
Palette: Burnt Umber,Titanium White,Raw Umber,Payne’s Grey
Keep this composition close and quiet, cropping in on just the horse’s head and neck with the girl’s head leaning in against it, since the whole feeling depends on that one point of contact reading as soft and gentle. Block the horse’s neck and head first in a warm brown, then paint the girl’s hair and the side of her face tucked in against it, letting her hair blend slightly into the mane at the edges.
Keep her coat or scarf in a muted winter tone so it does not compete with the horse’s coat, saving any brighter color for just a small accent like a knitted hat. The eyes of both figures can stay mostly closed or softly suggested, since this is a moment of stillness rather than an alert, forward-facing portrait.
If the two shapes feel too separated, soften the line where her hair meets the mane with a dry blending brush so they read as one connected, restful shape.
Warm light from one side keeps the whole scene feeling calm rather than dramatic.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Raw Umber,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey
A palomino’s coat needs careful mixing to avoid going either too orange or too muddy, so start with a base of raw sienna lightened with titanium white, then build warmer gold highlights and cooler shadow tones from that same base rather than mixing separate colors for each. Block the body first, then move to the pale cream to white mane, which should stay noticeably lighter than the body coat.
Paint individual snowflakes caught in the mane last, using the tip of a small brush to dab tiny dots of pure titanium white at varied sizes, resisting the urge to place them in any even pattern.
If the mane and body start blending into one flat gold shape, deepen the shadow side of the body with a touch of burnt umber so the lighter mane still separates clearly against it.
Keep the background simple and cool, pale blue-gray snow, so the warm gold coat stays the obvious star of the painting.
Palette: Raw Sienna,Titanium White,Burnt Umber,Cerulean Blue
A resting horse lying down is a much lower, more compact shape than a standing one, so flatten your whole silhouette and check it against the ground line: the body should sit close and wide rather than tall, with legs folded in and mostly hidden beneath it. Block this low oval shape first in a mid brown, then build the neck curving back so the head rests near the shoulder, eyes closed or nearly closed.
Snow around the resting body should show a flattened, slightly melted patch where warmth from the horse has pressed into it, a softer gray-white than the crisp snow further out, which is a small detail that sells the whole pose as believable rather than posed.
Keep the overall mood hushed with a muted, low-contrast palette and soft edges throughout, nothing in this painting should look sharp or alert.
If the folded legs look confusing, simplify them into one soft connected shape rather than trying to define each one separately.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Raw Sienna
The two-tone mane is the defining feature here, a dark stripe running through paler hair, so paint the whole mane in the lighter cream tone first, let it dry slightly, then add the dark central stripe on top in one confident, slightly uneven stroke rather than a perfectly straight line. Block the horse’s sturdy dun-colored body before the mane, keeping the overall shape compact and solid like the Shetland and Icelandic breeds on this list.
Build the valley behind as simple layered shapes, pale sky, distant snowy peaks, nearer slopes in cooler gray-blue, with the horse placed low in the frame so the landscape feels properly open and Nordic around it.
If the dark mane stripe comes out too perfectly centered and stiff, offset it slightly and let it waver a little along its length, real manes are never perfectly symmetrical.
Keep the overall palette muted and cool outside the horse itself so its warm dun coat stands out clearly.
Palette: Raw Sienna,Ivory Black,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey
Build this one around a single point of contact: the pony’s nose meeting the child’s mitten, so place that moment roughly on one of the stronger thirds of your canvas rather than dead center, which keeps the composition feeling natural rather than stiffly symmetrical. Block the gate first as a simple horizontal rail, then the pony’s head reaching over it, nose extended toward the small mittened hand.
Paint the mitten as one bright, simple shape, red or a soft knit color, since it should read instantly even from a distance, with no need for finger detail beyond the basic mitten outline. Keep the pony’s muzzle soft and slightly blurred where it meets the mitten, since the whole point is gentleness rather than sharp detail.
If the gate rail looks too dominant, lighten its value so the eye travels past it straight to the pony and hand.
A light dusting of snow along the top rail finishes the scene without pulling focus from the main moment.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cherry Red,Titanium White,Raw Umber
Give each foal a clearly different pose so the pair reads as play rather than two identical shapes standing near each other, one rearing up slightly or kicking out, the other low and turning away. Block both bodies first in simple overlapping ovals, keeping those long gangly legs mentioned earlier in mind, since young legs should still look a size too big for the body.
Paint their coats in slightly different tones, a lighter dun and a darker bay, so they stay visually distinct even at a glance, then add quick flicks of kicked-up snow around their legs with a dry brush to reinforce the sense of movement.
The easiest way to vary this scene next time is to swap the setting, the same two foals playing near a fence, under a tree, or close to their resting mothers, without changing the poses much at all.
Keep brushwork loose throughout, tight careful strokes will fight against the energy this subject needs.
Palette: Raw Sienna,Burnt Umber,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey
Let the sky do most of the emotional work here, blending soft bands of pink, lavender and pale gold across the top two thirds of the canvas before the horse goes in at all, since a quiet standing horse against a dramatic sky is really a sky painting with a small, calm figure in it. Block the horse low in the frame as a simple dark silhouette once the sky is in place, keeping its outline clean against all that soft color behind it.
Frost on the ground can pick up a little of the same pink from the sky, a few pale pink-white strokes mixed into the otherwise cool white snow, to tie the whole painting together.
If the sky and ground start competing for attention, keep the horse’s silhouette the darkest, most contrasted shape on the canvas so the eye always settles there first.
A single warm rim of light along the horse’s back, echoing the sky color, finishes the connection between the animal and the light around it.
Palette: Pale Pink,Dioxazine Violet,Van Dyke Brown,Titanium White
Push the energy of this pose further than feels comfortable, both hind legs kicked up and out, head low, back slightly arched, since a timid buck reads as just an awkward standing horse rather than a playful one. Sketch the diagonal line of the spine and the kicked legs first with thinned paint before blocking any solid color, to make sure the whole pose reads as one clear gesture.
Paint powder snow exploding from the hind hooves using a dry, almost scrubbed brush technique, loading very little paint and dragging it quickly so the white breaks up into scattered, textured marks rather than a smooth cloud.
This is a good subject to try the quick version on: in ten minutes block the dark horse gesture and dry-brushed snow burst and call it finished, while a forty-minute version adds a second, smaller horse watching from a short distance to give the scene some context.
Keep edges especially loose around the kicked legs so nothing in the pose looks stiff or held.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Cerulean Blue
An open moor gives you almost no landscape detail to lean on, just rolling ground and sky, so the ponies themselves need to carry the whole composition through scattered, varied placement rather than a neat line. Block the ground first in soft rolling bands of white, pale gray and a hint of frosted sage where tufts of moorland grass poke through the snow.
Place several ponies at different distances and sizes across the canvas, the nearest with slightly more defined shape and the furthest just simple soft smudges, which keeps the whole scene feeling wide and open rather than crowded into one corner.
Vary their poses, grazing, standing, one walking, so the herd does not look like repeated copies of the same shape, and let a cold wind direction show consistently in any visible mane or tail.
If the composition feels empty in the middle distance, add one small clump of gorse or a low stone wall to break up the space without adding much detail.
Palette: Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Raw Umber,Sap Green
For more help getting open winter ground right before adding animals, the step-by-step lessons in oil painting for beginners step by step work through snowy terrain in detail.
Bring together several ideas from this list for a calm finishing piece: the dark stable interior from the stable door idea, the falling snow dots from the hay bale and stable scenes, and the low, hushed mood of the napping horse, all in one doorway composition. Block the doorway as a simple dark rectangle first, then paint the horse standing just inside it, head low and eyes nearly closed, weight resting more on one hip than square on all four legs.
Keep the color palette narrow and warm inside the doorway, chocolate brown and raw umber, against the cooler whites and blues of the snowy world just outside it, which gives the whole painting a sense of shelter and quiet.
Snow falls in soft, varied dots outside the doorway only, flicked on with a dry brush once the interior is fully dry so the dots do not smear into the dark paint.
Finish with one small warm highlight along the horse’s lowered head to anchor the eye on this calm closing moment.
Palette: Van Dyke Brown,Chocolate Brown,Titanium White,Cerulean Blue
If this calm, shadowed mood appeals to you, the collection in winter oil painting for beginners has more quiet indoor and doorway winter scenes to try next.
What to Do Next
Pick one horse that already feels right for today, maybe the simple standing chestnut in its navy blanket if this is new ground, or the galloping herd if you want to loosen up. Set up an 8 by 10 inch canvas, block in your biggest shapes first, and let the rest follow from there.
Frequently Asked Questions
What colors do I need for horse painting in winter scenes?
A small warm and cool set covers nearly everything: burnt sienna, raw umber, Payne’s grey, titanium white, and one accent like cherry red or cerulean blue handle coats, shadows, snow and sky across this whole list.
How do I stop my snow from looking flat and white?
Mix in small amounts of blue, violet or pink rather than using pure white everywhere, since real snow shadows pick up color from the sky and ground around them and pure flat white reads as paper, not snow.
What is the easiest horse pose to start with as a beginner?
A standing horse seen from the side, like the chestnut horse in a turnout blanket or the pony in a field shelter, is easiest, since the legs and body sit in their simplest, most readable shapes.
How small can a canvas be for one of these ideas?
An 8 by 10 inch canvas suits every idea on this list well, keeping the subject large enough to fill the frame while staying realistic to finish in one sitting.
Do I need reference photos to paint horses accurately?
Working from a few reference photos helps enormously with leg angles and proportions, especially for action poses like galloping or bucking, where guessing from memory often goes wrong at the joints.
