27 Church Drawing Ideas of Snowy Village Chapels, Stone Bell Towers and White Hilltop Churches

Church drawing gives you everything urban sketching loves in one subject: a strong silhouette, honest geometry and a roof line that tells you exactly where the snow sits. Winter makes it even easier, because snow simplifies a building down to a few flat shapes and lets the fineliner do the talking while a light wash fills in the rest.

Below you will find twenty seven churches and chapels from a windswept Icelandic lava field to a quiet New England green, each one built for a single sitting with pen and a small watercolor kit. Work through them in order if you like, from the simplest white chapel to the busier square with a clock and walkers, or just pick whichever roof line catches your eye.

Start with the simplest church on this list: a white chapel on a snowy hill, reached by a single path to its door. Pencil in a light triangle for the gable roof and a narrow rectangle below, then find the hill as one soft curved line beneath it before any ink touches the page.

Ink the chapel first with a fineliner, keeping the roof edge slightly uneven so it reads as hand drawn rather than ruled. Leave the walls and hill as bare white paper and add only a thin grey wash under the eaves and along the path for shadow, since the whole point of a white chapel is the contrast between crisp ink and untouched snow.

If this is your first time drawing a building in snow, the common mistake is shading the hill too much and losing the white. Keep your brush almost dry for that shadow and test it on scrap paper first.

One measuring trick saves this drawing: hold your pen up at arm’s length against the chapel to check the roof height against the wall height before you ink, since most beginners draw the roof too tall. Today’s tip: draw the path last, as one simple tapering line, and it will pull the whole hill together.

Move from a lone chapel to a small village cluster with a stone church with a square bell tower rising above snowy roofs. Block in the tower as a tall rectangle first, since it anchors the whole composition, then add the lower roofs stepping away from it at different heights.

Work the stonework with short broken fineliner marks rather than a solid outline, since real stone is never a clean edge. Once the ink is dry, wash the tower in a warm grey and leave the roofs as white paper with just a blue grey shadow line along one side to show where the snow has settled unevenly.

The easiest place to go wrong here is making every building the same size, which flattens the scene. If that happens, darken the tower’s wash slightly so it reads as the tallest, nearest shape and the smaller roofs recede behind it.

Check your eye level before you start: if you are sketching from a street, the tower top should lean back slightly toward a vanishing point above your head, while its base sits level with the other roofs. One tip for today: draw the tower’s clock or window as a tiny dark square, since one dark accent against all that snow does more work than any amount of shading.

Once you are comfortable with a simple tower, try the wooden stave church of Norway, with its stacked, tiered roofs under heavy snow. Draw it from the base up: a low rectangle first, then each roof tier narrowing as it rises, almost like a small dark pagoda.

Ink the tiers with confident straight lines since stave churches are famously precise and geometric, then let a dark brown or near black wash cover the timber walls completely. The snow sits as thick white caps on every tier edge, so paint the sky around those caps rather than painting the caps themselves.

The common error is losing the stepped silhouette by making the tiers too similar in size. Fix it by making each tier roughly two thirds the width of the one below it, which keeps the pagoda feel.

For the quick ten minute version, sketch just the silhouette and wash it flat black against a pale blue sky. Given forty minutes, add the carved dragon finials at the roof peaks and a scatter of dark pines beside it for scale. Today’s tip: paint the sky slightly darker than you think, since a dark timber church needs a mid toned sky behind it to read as black rather than muddy.

Palette: Lamp Black,Burnt Umber,Cerulean Blue

Look up reference photos of Norwegian stave churches before you start, since the tiered roof shapes and dragon finials are specific and worth getting right even in a loose sketch.

Color enters the scene properly with a painted wooden church in a snowy Carpathian village, its walls a soft blue or green against the white. Pencil a simple rectangle body with a steep pointed roof and a narrow tower, then ink the wall boards as a series of thin vertical lines rather than one flat panel.

Paint the walls first in a pale wash of your chosen color, letting it dry before you add the ink details for window frames and trim, since wet ink on wet paint will bleed into mud. Snow gathers along the roof ridge and on a low picket fence in front, both left as bare paper edged with a thin grey shadow.

If the colored walls end up flat, a second, slightly deeper wash along the lower half of the building fixes it, since real painted wood weathers darker near the ground. No teal watercolor on hand is fine, since a mix of blue and a touch of yellow gets you the same soft green.

This is a good subject to revisit with a different wall color each time, trying a faded red or a dusty ochre on the next sketch. Today’s tip: keep the fence low and loose, just a row of short vertical dashes, so it frames the church without competing with it.

Bring in some life with a bell tower with crows circling on a frosty morning, a subject that rewards a loose, quick hand. Draw the tower as a tall narrow shape first, ink its stonework and arched bell openings, then leave the sky as open white or pale grey behind it.

Add the crows last, each one just two or three curved pen strokes forming a shallow V, scattered at different heights and sizes around the tower top. Smaller, fainter crows read as further away, so vary their size rather than drawing a row of identical birds.

The usual mistake is drawing too many crows in too tidy a pattern, which looks more like a flock of paper cutouts than wild birds. Four or five placed unevenly, with gaps between them, always looks more convincing than a dozen in a neat ring.

Think about the light source before you wash the tower, since a frosty morning usually means a low sun from one side: wash that side pale gold and leave the other side in cool shadow blue grey. One tip for today: flick a little diluted grey wash with a dry brush near the crows to suggest cold morning haze without drawing a single extra line.

For a scene with real depth, try a chapel in a snowy mountain pass with a hiker resting beside it, tiny against the slopes. Draw the chapel small and plain, just a box with a steep roof and a cross, placed slightly off center so the mountains around it have room to breathe.

Build the peaks behind it with a few overlapping jagged pencil lines before inking, then wash the furthest peaks pale blue grey and the nearest slope a warmer grey to push the chapel forward in space. The hiker is just a small dark coat shape and two thin legs, no more than a centimeter tall, resting against the chapel wall.

Scale is everything here, and the mistake most sketchers make is drawing the chapel too large for the mountains around it. Measure the hiker against the chapel door first, since a door is roughly twice a standing person’s height, and let every other shape follow from that.

If you only have ten minutes, sketch the chapel and one simple mountain ridge behind it and skip the hiker altogether. With forty minutes, layer three ridges of decreasing value into the distance and add a thin trail of footprints leading to the chapel door. Today’s tip: keep the hiker’s coat the only strong color in the whole scene so the eye finds it immediately.

Few churches make a bolder sketch than an Icelandic black church on a snowy lava field, its dark timber body set against pure white ground. Draw the church as a simple triangular roof over a narrow rectangle, keeping every line straight and the silhouette clean, since the drama here comes from contrast rather than detail.

Ink the whole building solidly in black or a very dark grey fineliner, then leave almost everything around it as untouched white paper, adding only a faint blue grey wash along the lava field’s uneven surface to suggest its lumpy texture. A low wash of pale violet grey along the horizon gives the scene a cold arctic sky without needing much paint at all.

The temptation is to add texture to the black church itself, but too many lines flatten the strong silhouette that makes this subject work. Keep the church flat and let the surrounding lava field, drawn with a few irregular bumpy pencil lines, carry all the texture instead.

No black ink pen available works fine with a very dark mix of blue and brown watercolor instead, painted on dry for a crisp edge. One tip for today: leave one small warm light in a window, just a tiny dab of ochre, since it is the only note of warmth in an otherwise cold, graphic scene.

Palette: Lamp Black,Violet Grey,Naples Yellow

Shift from wild landscape to town life with a church square with a fountain and pigeons gathering in light snow. Lay out the church facade first along the back of the square, then place the fountain as a simple round basin shape in the foreground, slightly off center so it does not block the doorway.

Ink the facade with its windows and door as the steadiest lines in the drawing, then loosen up for the fountain and the pigeons, which can be sketchy clusters of small round bodies and short line legs scattered near its base. A pale grey wash covers the paving stones in light bands, leaving patches of white paper between them for scattered snow.

Crowded squares often end up with every pigeon the same size and evenly spaced, which looks unnatural. Group most of them near the fountain’s edge with just one or two wandering off alone, and vary their size slightly so the nearer ones read as a touch larger.

If you enjoy this kind of busy, people filled square, the village scene drawing ideas page has more ways to fill a small town scene with life. Today’s tip: keep the fountain’s water as a few quick vertical white gaps left in the ink, never fully painted, so it still reads as moving rather than frozen solid.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Warm Grey,Cerulean Blue

Water brings a new challenge, so try a red wooden church by a frozen lake in Finland, its color the one warm note against endless white and grey. Draw the church as a simple box and steep roof near the shoreline, then run a long, mostly straight horizon line out across the frozen lake behind it.

Paint the church in a confident barn red wash while the ink is fully dry, then turn to the ice, which is best suggested with a very pale blue grey wash broken by a few thin white paper gaps for cracks and drifted snow. Reflect a faint streak of the red wall color directly below the church on the ice to tie the two together.

The lake often ends up looking like flat land rather than ice if you skip the horizon line and the subtle color reflection. Both small additions are what read as frozen water to the eye.

Working from a photo and short on reference, the architecture sketchbook ideas collection has more building and bell tower subjects drawn in a similar loose style worth studying. One tip for today: leave a narrow strip of white paper exactly where church meets ice, since that bright gap is what sells the cold, flat light of a frozen lake.

Palette: Cadmium Red,Cerulean Blue,Payne’s Grey

Step up the detail with a gothic cathedral front with snow resting on every ledge and carved recess. Begin with the broad proportions in light pencil, the two towers and the wide central door, before touching ink, since gothic facades go wrong fast if the towers end up uneven heights.

Ink the pointed arches and tracery with patient, slightly varied lines rather than ruled precision, working from the main door upward to the towers so the drawing stays balanced as you go. Snow catches on every horizontal ledge, buttress and window sill, so leave a thin strip of white paper along each one before washing the stone a cool grey around it.

Overworking the carved detail is the biggest risk with a cathedral front, since too many lines turn lace like stonework into a confused scribble. Suggest the tracery with a few repeated marks in the busiest areas and let the eye fill in the rest.

Measure the two towers against each other constantly as you draw, holding your pencil up to compare their heights, since a lopsided cathedral is the fastest way to lose the whole drawing. Today’s tip: wash the recessed doorway almost black, since that single dark shadow gives the whole pale facade something to anchor against.

Return to something small and calm with a tiny roadside chapel beside a snowy stubble field, barely bigger than a shed. Sketch it as the simplest shape on the whole list, a box with a single pitched roof and a small cross, set low on the page so the field around it dominates the composition.

Ink the chapel quickly and confidently in under a minute, then spend most of your time on the field, where short, scratchy pencil or pen lines poking through a thin wash of warm grey suggest stubble breaking through the snow. Leave plenty of white paper between the marks rather than covering the whole field evenly.

If the field looks too busy or too uniform, step back and remove half the stubble marks, since a scattered, uneven texture reads as more natural than a dense, even one.

For the ten minute version, draw the chapel and a handful of stubble marks and stop there. With forty minutes, add a distant tree line along the horizon and a few crow silhouettes overhead to give the flat field some depth. One tip for today: keep the chapel the only vertical shape on the page, since that contrast against the flat field is what makes it feel lonely and quiet.

Narrow the view right in for a church gate with snowy stone pillars and an iron lantern, a close up detail study rather than a whole building. Draw the two pillars first as simple rectangles capped with rounded or pointed tops, then hang the lantern from a bracket between or beside them with careful, slightly ornate line work.

Ink the stone pillars with rough, broken lines to suggest weathered texture, saving your steadiest, most controlled lines for the iron lantern itself, since metalwork reads as crisp against rough stone. A cap of snow sits on each pillar top and along the lantern’s roof, left as bare paper against a grey wash below.

Iron details often collapse into a shapeless blob if you rush them, so slow down for the lantern and build it from a few clear geometric shapes, a hexagon or box with a small peaked top, rather than freehand scribbling.

If you enjoy drawing small architectural details like this, the Victorian junk journal ideas page has more close up studies of ironwork and old doorways in a similar spirit. Today’s tip: add one small orange glow inside the lantern glass, since a tiny warm light against all that cold stone and snow makes the whole sketch feel inhabited.

Palette: Lamp Black,Warm Grey,Naples Yellow

Slow the pace down with a church garden with a snowy bench under an old yew tree, a quiet corner rather than the church itself. Draw the yew first as a dense, slightly irregular dark mass of foliage on a short trunk, then place the bench beneath it as a simple rectangle on four thin legs, angled slightly so it feels tucked into the space.

Ink the yew’s outline loosely and fill it with dense scribbled marks rather than individual leaves, since evergreen foliage reads better as texture than detail. The bench stays clean and linear by contrast, with a thin cap of snow along its seat and backrest left as untouched paper.

A common problem is a yew that looks like a cloud rather than a tree, usually from too even a scribble. Vary your pressure and leave small gaps of white within the foliage mass to suggest where branches poke through the snow-laden green.

Looking at the light helps here too: decide where the sun sits and keep one side of the yew’s foliage mass noticeably darker, which gives it real form instead of a flat silhouette. One tip for today: add a single set of footprints leading up to the bench and stopping there, since it suggests someone sat for a while and then walked on.

Palette: Sap Green,Payne’s Grey,Raw Umber

Get in close again for a bell tower seen up close with snow resting directly on the bells themselves. Draw the open arched opening of the tower first as a large shape filling most of the page, then place one or two bells inside it, each a simple rounded bell shape hanging from a dark beam.

Ink the stone arch with broken, textured lines and the bells with smoother, more controlled strokes so metal reads differently from stone. Snow collects along the top curve of each bell and across the beam above, left as bare paper, while the inside of the bell and the shadowed stone around it goes dark with a heavier wash.

Beginners often draw the bell too symmetrical and flat, losing its rounded metal form. Add a single curved highlight line down one side and darken the opposite edge slightly to give it real volume.

Working from a dry brush once the first wash has dried, drag a nearly empty brush across the bell’s lower curve to lift a little paint and suggest a soft metallic sheen. Today’s tip: keep the sky glimpsed through the arch very pale, almost white, so the dark bell and stone read as strongly as possible against it.

Palette: Lamp Black,Warm Grey,Payne’s Grey

Change climate entirely for a whitewashed adobe mission church dusted with a light snow in New Mexico, its rounded forms unlike anything else on this list. Draw the walls with soft, curved corners rather than sharp right angles, since adobe buildings slump and round with age, and keep the bell openings simple arched shapes near the top.

Ink the outline loosely, then wash the walls a warm, pale ochre white, letting a thin dusting of snow sit as untouched paper only along the roof parapet and window sills, since a light dusting is very different from the heavy drifts elsewhere in this list. A few protruding roof beams, called vigas, are simple short dark lines poking out beneath the parapet.

The easiest way to lose the adobe feel is to draw walls that are too straight and crisp. Let your ink line wobble gently along every edge, and round every corner slightly rather than squaring it off.

No ochre paint in your kit mixes easily from yellow ochre substitutes like a touch of burnt sienna into raw sienna, or even a warm yellow with a tiny bit of grey. One tip for today: keep the sky behind the mission a strong clear blue, since that desert blue against warm white adobe is the color pairing that makes this subject unmistakable.

Build a full street scene with a village church at the end of a snowy lane of cottages, using the lane itself to lead the eye straight to the door. Draw the cottages along both sides first, smaller and smaller as they recede, then place the church as the tallest shape waiting at the far end.

Ink the nearest cottage with the most detail, windows, doors, maybe a chimney, then simplify quickly as the buildings recede, until the furthest cottages are just a few quick lines. The lane itself stays almost entirely white paper, with only a thin grey wash along its edges where snow has been pushed aside.

Perspective is the main hazard in a street scene like this: keep every rooftop line converging gently toward the same point near the church, and check this before inking by drawing faint guide lines in pencil first.

If you like this kind of layered village approach, the Christmas village painting ideas collection has more ways to build a row of buildings leading toward a focal point. Today’s tip: add one tiny figure walking away from you down the lane, since it gives the empty street a sense of scale and quiet life.

Palette: Warm Grey,Payne’s Grey,Raw Umber

Try a rounder silhouette with an onion dome church with pastel walls standing in actively falling snow. Draw the dome itself first as a bulbous curved shape narrowing to a thin spire, a form that takes a few attempts to get symmetrical, so sketch it lightly in pencil before committing to ink.

Ink the dome with a few confident curved strokes rather than many short ones, then wash the walls below in a soft pastel color, pink, blue or mint, keeping the dome a contrasting darker tone like deep teal or gold. Falling snow is suggested afterward with a handful of small white gouache or masking fluid dots flicked across the dry painted sky.

Lopsided domes are the most common issue with this subject. Draw a faint vertical pencil guideline straight down the center of the dome before you start and keep both sides matching against it as you ink.

No masking fluid or white gouache on hand works just as well with a white gel pen, dotted directly onto the finished painted sky once everything else is completely dry. One tip for today: keep the walls pale and the dome the only strongly saturated color, so the eye lands there first.

You Will Need

• white gel pen or masking fluid for falling snow

Palette: Deep Teal,Pastel Pink,Naples Yellow

Add real distance with a church on a small island in a half frozen lake, its shape small and isolated against open water and ice. Draw the island and church together as one compact cluster near the center or off to one side of the page, keeping the building quite small since the lake around it is the real subject.

Ink the church with care but keep it modest in detail, then turn to the lake, painting open water in a deeper blue grey and the frozen sections in a much paler, almost white wash with a jagged broken line between the two. A thin reflection of the church, just a soft vertical smudge of color, sits in the open water beneath it.

The ice and water often blend into one flat shape if the value difference between them is too small. Push the open water noticeably darker than the ice so the two read as clearly different surfaces even at a glance.

Standing at the shoreline looking across, your eye level sits low and close to the water, so keep the horizon line low on the page and let the sky take up more space than the lake. Today’s tip: leave a narrow ring of white paper exactly where the island meets the water, since it reads instantly as a lit, snowy edge.

Palette: Cerulean Blue,Payne’s Grey,Warm Grey

Return to the forest for a stone chapel among snowy pines, the trees doing as much work in this drawing as the building itself. Draw the chapel first as a simple gabled stone box, then surround it with pine trees of varying heights, each one a tall narrow triangle built from a few zigzagging side branches rather than one smooth outline.

Ink the pines with quick angular strokes, heavier and closer together near the trunk, lighter and more spaced out toward each tip, then let a dark green wash settle into the gaps while leaving every branch tip as a touch of white paper for snow. The chapel stays paler and simpler by comparison so it does not compete with all that pine texture.

Overlapping pines are the fix for a flat forest: let the nearest tree cross in front of the chapel’s edge or in front of another tree, since overlap is what convinces the eye of depth more than size ever does.

For a faster version, draw only three or four pines and the chapel roofline in ten minutes. Given forty minutes, add a denser tree line behind the chapel and a soft blue grey wash for distant shadow between the trunks. One tip for today: keep at least one pine taller than the chapel roof, since a forest that only reaches the eaves looks planted rather than wild.

Palette: Sap Green,Payne’s Grey,Warm Grey

Go crisp and graphic with a white clapboard church in a snowy New England village, a subject built almost entirely from straight lines and sharp angles. Draw the tall, narrow steeple first since it sets the proportions for everything below, then build the simple rectangular body and a modest row of arched windows beneath it.

Ink every clapboard line as a series of thin horizontal strokes across the walls before washing, since this texture is what separates the style from a plain stone church. Wash the steeple and walls in the faintest grey blue tint rather than leaving them stark white, which keeps the building from vanishing into the snow around it.

If the steeple looks squat or heavy, check its proportions against the main body: a New England steeple is usually taller and narrower than beginners expect, often close to the full height of the church body beneath it.

For more help filling the surrounding streets with winter life, the Christmas scene drawing ideas page has plenty of snowy street details that pair well with a church like this. Today’s tip: add a single black weathervane at the steeple tip, since that thin dark silhouette against open sky finishes the whole drawing.

Palette: Cerulean Blue,Payne’s Grey,Lamp Black

Try an unusual viewpoint with a church steeple seen over rooftops from an attic window, framed by the window itself at the edges of the page. Draw the window frame first, just a simple rectangle or arched shape at the very border of the paper, then place the steeple and rooftops beyond it, smaller and softer in detail than anything in the foreground.

Ink the window frame with the darkest, most solid lines in the whole drawing, since a frame reads as near and solid against a softer, paler view beyond it. The steeple and rooftops get much lighter ink and a pale wash, almost hazy, to suggest the distance and the glass between you and them.

Many sketchers make the distant steeple as dark and detailed as the window frame, which flattens the sense of looking through glass. Keep a clear value difference between the two, dark and crisp up close, pale and soft further away.

Since this composition is really about a view framed by architecture, the architecture sketchbook ideas page has more unusual viewpoints worth trying from a window or doorway. One tip for today: leave a thin uneven white strip along the inside of the window frame to suggest frost or old glass catching the light.

Palette: Lamp Black,Warm Grey,Cerulean Blue

Take on a bigger structure with a hilltop monastery with snowy terraces and a winding road climbing toward it. Build the hill first as a series of stacked, gently curving terrace lines, then place the monastery buildings along the top as a cluster of simple rectangular blocks at slightly different heights.

Ink the winding road as one continuous line that switches back on itself up the hillside, then add the monastery buildings with slightly more detail since they are the destination the eye travels toward. Each terrace catches a thin cap of snow along its edge, left as white paper against a grey green wash on the slope itself.

The hill often ends up looking like a smooth cone rather than a series of terraces if the horizontal lines are too faint or too evenly spaced. Vary the gaps between terrace lines and darken the shadow just beneath each one so they read as actual stepped ledges.

From a distance like this, your eye level sits well below the hilltop, so every terrace line should curve upward slightly at both ends rather than running flat across the page. Today’s tip: keep the winding road the brightest, cleanest line on the hillside, since it is what gives the whole scene a sense of a long, quiet climb.

Palette: Sap Green,Warm Grey,Payne’s Grey

Slow right down for a ruined abbey arch with snow resting on its broken stones, a single architectural fragment rather than a whole building. Draw the arch as the main shape filling most of the page, its top edge intentionally uneven and broken rather than a clean curve, with empty sky showing straight through where a roof used to be.

Ink the stonework with heavy, broken, textured lines, especially along the crumbling top edge, then wash the stone in warm greys and browns with patches of white paper left bare for both snow and bright, sunlit stone. Grass or weeds poking through the base are a few loose scratchy green marks at the foot of the arch.

The ruin can look too tidy if every stone block is drawn the same size and shape. Vary the size of the blocks and let some edges crumble into rougher, less defined marks, especially near the broken top.

Pressing harder with your pen along the deepest cracks and lighter along the sunlit faces gives the stone real texture without adding a single extra line, since pressure alone changes how worn or sharp an edge looks. One tip for today: let a little sky color show faintly through the gaps in the broken stone, since that glimpse of blue is what tells the eye it is really a ruin.

Palette: Raw Umber,Warm Grey,Sap Green

Add motion with two skiers gliding past a tiny alpine chapel tucked at the base of a slope. Draw the chapel small and simple first, since it is really a backdrop here, then place the two skiers in the foreground, each one just a lean diagonal body shape with two thin ski lines trailing behind.

Ink the skiers with quick, confident diagonal strokes that lean into the direction of travel, keeping their poles as two thin angled lines each, then let the chapel behind them stay quieter and more static by comparison. A soft blue grey wash across the slope, broken by two long curved ski tracks left as white paper, finishes the motion.

Static looking skiers are the main pitfall, usually from drawing them too upright. Lean the whole body forward and bend the front knee slightly, since that single adjustment is what reads as gliding rather than standing still.

Comparing the chapel height to the skiers keeps the scale honest: a standing adult skier should reach roughly to the chapel’s window line, not its roof, so measure against that before you ink either figure. Today’s tip: curve the ski tracks slightly rather than drawing them dead straight, since a gentle curve suggests real movement down a real slope.

Palette: Cerulean Blue,Alizarin Crimson,Payne’s Grey

Bring the scene back to something very small and human with a bicycle leaning by snowy church steps, left there for a quick weekday visit. Draw the church steps and a fragment of the doorway first, just enough to suggest the building without drawing the whole facade, then lean the bicycle against the railing or wall beside them.

Ink the bicycle carefully, since its wheels and frame are unforgiving of wobbly circles, so draw the two wheels first as simple circles using a coin or a round lid to trace them if your freehand circles feel shaky. The steps and stonework behind it can stay much looser and more textured by comparison.

A lopsided bicycle usually comes from mismatched wheel sizes, so draw both circles the same size from the same tracing tool rather than freehand, and check they sit on the same baseline before adding the frame between them.

No coin or lid of the right size on hand, a steady hand and a few slow practice circles on scrap paper first will get you close enough for a loose sketch. One tip for today: add a thin line of snow balanced along the top bar of the bicycle frame, since that small detail instantly tells the eye how long it has been standing there.

You Will Need

• coin or small round lid to trace the bicycle wheels

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Lamp Black,Warm Grey

Finish on a gentler note with a round Romanesque chapel beside a snowy apple tree, its bare branches reaching out over the roof. Draw the chapel as a simple cylinder shape with a cone roof, a form that takes a steady hand but only needs a handful of lines, then place the apple tree’s trunk just beside or slightly in front of it.

Ink the chapel’s curved wall with a few long sweeping strokes rather than many short ones, then build the bare tree with a strong main trunk splitting into thinner and thinner branches, each one tipped with a tiny cap of snow left as white paper. A few fallen branches or a single leftover apple on a low branch adds a quiet, specific detail without much extra work.

Round buildings often end up looking oval or lopsided from an unsteady curve, so if that happens, go back in with a few confirming strokes along the same line rather than erasing and starting over, since a slightly thickened, reworked curve still reads as intentional.

Varying this one next time is easy: try the same round chapel in high summer with the apple tree in full leaf and fruit instead of bare branches, which changes the whole mood with the same basic drawing. Today’s tip: keep the tree’s branch tips pointing in slightly different directions rather than symmetrical, since real branches never grow in a neat fan.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Raw Umber,Alizarin Crimson

End the list with a busier scene: a church tower clock over a snowy town square with walkers crossing below. Draw the tower and its round clock face first, placing the clock high enough that it clearly overlooks the whole square beneath it, then build the surrounding buildings as simpler shapes framing the sides of the page.

Ink the clock face with real care, since its hands and numbers are a small focal detail worth getting right, then loosen up considerably for the walkers below, each one just a simple coat shape and a pair of thin legs in mid stride. Keep the square itself mostly white paper with a pale grey wash for shadows cast by each figure.

Too many identical walkers all facing the same direction looks mechanical rather than lively. Give them different poses, one bent slightly forward against the cold, one pausing to look at the clock, one simply walking on, and vary their coat colors slightly.

For more help populating a busy winter street with small figures and shopfronts, the Christmas village painting ideas page has plenty of inspiration for crowds at this scale. Today’s tip: set the clock hands at a specific time rather than leaving them vague, since a real time gives the whole square a sense of an actual quiet weekday moment.

What to Do Next

Pick one church that matches how much time you actually have today, a simple white chapel for a quick sketch or the busy town square clock if you want to settle in for a while, and start with a light pencil layout on a cold press watercolor page before any ink touches the paper.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paper works best for a church drawing in ink and watercolor?

A cold press watercolor sketchbook around 140 pound weight works best, since it handles both fineliner detail and light washes without buckling or letting ink bleed through the page.

Should you draw the church in pencil before inking it?

A light pencil sketch first helps, especially for towers, domes and symmetrical facades, since it lets you fix proportions before committing to permanent ink lines.

How do you keep snow looking white in a watercolor church drawing?

Leave snowy areas as untouched white paper rather than painting them, and only add a thin grey or blue wash in the shadowed parts to suggest where the snow dips and folds.

What ink pen is best for sketching stone and timber churches?

A waterproof fineliner between 0.3 and 0.5 millimeters suits most church details, holding fine stonework lines while staying bold enough to survive a watercolor wash on top without smearing.

How do you make a church drawing look less flat and more three dimensional?

Decide on one light direction before you start and keep one side of every tower, roof and wall consistently darker, since a single clear light source does more for depth than extra detail.
