28 Lantern Drawing Ideas of Garden Lanterns, Paper Lanterns and Cozy Window Lights

35

Lantern drawing gives you a glowing little subject that fits in a single sitting and never asks for a huge scene. A lantern is just a shape with light trapped inside it, and once you get comfortable with the glass, the frame and the glow, you can drop it into a garden, a window, a boat or a snowy gate and it always reads as cozy.

Below you will find 28 lantern settings to draw with alcohol markers over a fineliner outline, moving from the simplest single lantern to busier scenes with figures and crowds. Pick whichever one matches the light you feel like mixing today, amber glow or pastel sky, and work your way down the list whenever you want another quick, satisfying page.

Start with the lantern hanging from a tree branch, the simplest setup on this whole list and a good place to warm up your fineliner. Draw the branch first as a single curved line crossing the top third of the page, then hang the lantern from it with a short loop of wire, keeping the lantern body a simple rounded box with a peaked lid.

Ink the lantern frame and the leaf shapes around it before any color touches the paper, then lay amber marker inside the glass panels first, leaving a small white gap near the top panel for the hottest part of the glow. Build the metal frame in a cooler grey over the amber so the warm light still reads as coming from inside.

If the lantern looks like it is floating instead of hanging, add a second thinner wire line and a tiny shadow shape directly beneath it on the branch, that alone fixes the weight problem. Swap in a warm brown marker for the frame if grey feels too cold against the amber glow.

Keep the leaves loose and few, four or five shapes around the lantern read better than a dense cluster. Today’s tip: always leave that one small white paper gap in the glass before you color anything else, it is the easiest way to keep a marker lantern glowing instead of looking like a solid orange blob.

Move from one lantern to a string of them strung across a narrow street between two buildings. Sketch the two building walls first as simple angled rectangles leaning toward each other at the top, then draw a single sagging line between them to hang the paper lanterns from, spacing five or six round shapes unevenly along it.

Work the furthest lantern smallest and palest, and the nearest one largest and warmest, that size jump alone creates the sense of a street stretching away from you. Color the buildings in flat blush and dusty teal blocks before you touch any lantern, so the warm orange shapes have something cool to glow against.

The common mistake here is spacing the lanterns evenly like beads, which flattens the whole street. Bunch two or three closer together and leave a gap near the end instead.

If you want more depth in forty minutes rather than ten, add tiny lit windows in the buildings and a cobbled texture underfoot with short grey dashes. No orange marker on hand: a warm coral works almost as well for the glow.

Bring the scene down to a doorstep, with a lantern sitting beside a potted plant on the step itself. Draw the step and door frame as two simple straight-edged shapes first, then place the lantern a little off center so the pot can balance it on the other side, since two matched objects centered on a page tend to look stiff.

Ink the lantern and the pot before the door, working the lantern’s glass panels in amber and the plant in two shades of green so neither competes for attention. A wash of warm blush on the door itself keeps the whole doorstep feeling lived in rather than like a hardware catalog.

Check that the lantern and the pot sit on the same baseline, uneven feet are the easiest way to make a doorstep scene look wrong. A ruler line in pencil first solves this before any ink goes down.

For a quick version, leave the door plain and let the lantern and plant carry the whole picture. For a fuller one, add a welcome mat texture and a house number plate above the door. One tip worth remembering: always draw the object closest to you slightly larger than logic says it should be, it reads as nearer every time.

Set the lantern down on a picnic table for a quiet dusk scene, a nice one if you enjoyed the doorstep setup. Block in the table as a simple plank shape in perspective, slightly wider at the front edge than the back, before placing the lantern a little left or right of center on top of it.

Light the lantern itself first in amber, then work outward into the table’s wood grain using short parallel marker strokes rather than one flat fill, which keeps the surface from looking like plastic. The sky behind gets a soft teal to dusty purple blend, laid in after the lantern so you can judge the glow against it properly.

If the table looks flat, add a cast shadow stretching away from the lantern in the direction opposite the glow, this single shape does more for depth than extra detail anywhere else. No purple marker handy: a cool grey-blue blends into teal just as well for dusk.

Ten minutes gets you the lantern and table alone; forty minutes lets you add a cloth napkin or a mason jar of flowers beside it. Keep today’s tip in mind: always paint the shadow last, once you have committed to where the light is coming from.

Carry the lantern into a forest path now, held low to light the way between dark tree trunks. Place the lantern low in the frame, around a third of the way up, then build tall simple tree trunk shapes rising around it, tapering slightly as they go so the path feels like it is receding into the distance.

Work from the lantern outward again: light the glass and the small circle of path it illuminates first, then darken the trunks and shadows as they move away from that glow, using deeper green-grey tones the further out you go. This push from light center to dark edges is what makes a night forest read as lit rather than just dark and orange.

Eye level matters here, keep it low, near the bottom of the page, since a lantern held at walking height means you are looking slightly up into the trees, not down on them from above. That single choice makes the whole scene feel like you are standing in it.

Watch that the glow does not spread evenly across the whole page, it should fade out within a short radius of the lantern, with the corners staying mostly dark. A kneaded eraser can lift a touch of fineliner smudge if the glow edge gets messy.

Shift from the forest to a cabin porch and an older style of lantern, the vintage oil kind with a glass chimney and a curved metal handle on top. Draw the handle and the glass chimney as two separate simple shapes stacked together, then add the wider base below, this three-part structure is what makes an oil lantern read correctly rather than like a generic lamp.

Ink the porch railing and a plank or two of the cabin wall before adding color, then warm the glass chimney first in amber with a small unmarked strip left for the flame’s brightest point. The wood of the porch takes a warm brown with darker grain lines added once the base color is dry, so the lines sit crisp instead of bleeding.

Getting the handle wrong is the most common slip, keep it a thin curved line rather than a thick bar, since oil lanterns have a delicate wire handle, not a solid one. If amber feels too strong alone, mix in a touch of warm yellow at the very core of the flame.

Quick version: lantern and a single porch plank. Fuller version: add a rocking chair shape and a coiled welcome mat nearby, both quick shapes that build out the cabin feeling fast.

Palette: Lantern Amber,Warm Yellow,Warm Brown,Payne’s Grey

Try drawing the glass chimney slightly narrower at the top than the base, that subtle taper is what separates an old oil lantern shape from a modern lamp.

Bring the lantern indoors now, sitting on a windowsill as rain streaks the glass outside. Draw the window frame first as a simple grid of straight lines, then place the lantern on the inner sill, slightly toward one side so the empty glass panes still carry visual weight.

Color the lantern’s glow in amber first, then lay a cool blue-grey wash across the outer window panes before adding the rain streaks as thin vertical lines pulled downward with a slightly drier marker tip, which gives them a streaked rather than solid look. This order, warm glow before cool rain, keeps the contrast between inside and outside doing the real work.

If the rain looks like straight ruled lines instead of water, vary their length and let a few break and restart, real rain streaks are never perfectly even. For reference, look at any photo of a rainy window at night and notice how the streaks cluster rather than spread evenly.

A bolder version doubles the rain streaks and adds a soft reflection of the lantern glow on the wet glass itself, a small smudged amber shape just below the lantern’s position. One tip for today: always color the glow before the rain, it is far easier to streak blue over warm amber than the reverse.

Take the lantern down to the water now, hung from a small wooden boat tied at the dock. Sketch the boat’s hull as a simple curved shape sitting low in the frame, then hang the lantern from a short post or hook near the bow, keeping it small relative to the whole boat so the scale stays believable.

Work the water next, a flat area of soft teal with a few short horizontal marker strokes to suggest gentle ripples, laid down before you add the lantern’s reflection as a wavy amber line breaking the water’s surface directly below the glow. That broken reflection line is the detail that convinces the eye this is water and not just a colored background.

Boats often end up looking flat on the page, so add one simple dark shadow line along the hull’s lower edge where it meets the water, this single stroke gives it weight. No teal on hand, a muted blue-green from any set works just as well for calm dock water.

Try this quick trick next time you draw boats: compare the boat’s length to the height of the lantern hanging from it, keeping the lantern no taller than a quarter of the hull’s length keeps the proportions reading correctly.

Palette: Lantern Amber,Soft Teal,Warm Brown,Payne’s Grey

Scatter several paper lanterns now, floating on a calm lake at dusk. Draw the lake’s horizon line first across the lower third of the page, then place three or four simple round lantern shapes at different distances across the water, largest near the front and smallest near the horizon to set the depth.

Color the water in a soft blend of teal fading into blush near the horizon, laid down before the lanterns so their warm glow sits clearly on top of the cooler water. Add a short vertical reflection streak beneath each lantern, slightly wavier for the ones further away since distant reflections tend to blur more.

The easiest way this scene goes wrong is lining the lanterns up too neatly, like beads on a string. Scatter them with uneven gaps and let one or two drift slightly off from the rest.

For a simpler version, three lanterns and a plain water wash is plenty for ten minutes of work. With more time, add a soft hill silhouette along the horizon and a few birds as small V shapes in the sky above. Cozy drawing ideas lean on this same kind of soft, glowing evening light if you want more practice with it.

Palette: Lantern Amber,Soft Teal,Blush Pink,Warm Grey

Bring the lantern into a quiet still life now, paired with a lit candle and a scatter of pine cones around its base. Draw the lantern first as a simple glass box shape, then add the candle inside it as a thin shape with a small flame at the top, before placing two or three pine cones at varied angles around the base outside the glass.

Color the candle flame first in warm yellow with amber around its edges, then let that glow spread softly into the glass panels around it. Work the pine cones last in layered warm browns, using short overlapping marker strokes to suggest their scaly texture rather than outlining every single scale.

If the pine cones look too smooth, go back in with a fine brown fineliner once the marker is dry and add short dark marks following the direction each scale points, that texture trick reads as pine cone instantly. Swap pine cones for a few acorns if that is what you have reference for nearby.

Quick version: lantern and candle alone, no cones. Fuller version: scatter three or four cones at different sizes and add a sprig of greenery tucked beside them for a fuller little still life.

Add a small figure now, a child in a raincoat holding a lantern out in front of them on a damp evening. Sketch the figure first as simple rounded shapes, an oval head, a bell-shaped raincoat body, then place the lantern in one outstretched hand, slightly lower than the figure’s waist so the arm reads as relaxed rather than stiff.

Compare the lantern’s height to the child’s head, keeping the lantern no taller than the head itself keeps the proportions believable for a child-sized hand holding it. Color the raincoat in a bright yellow or soft teal block first, then let the lantern’s amber glow light up the side of the face and coat nearest to it.

Faces are the trickiest part of a figure like this, so keep it simple: two small dots for eyes, a short curve for a smile, nothing more detailed is needed at this distance. If figures intimidate you, start with the raincoat and lantern only and leave the face as a soft shadow shape under the hood.

A puddle reflection beneath the child’s boots, just a thin horizontal smear of the same colors upside down, finishes the rainy mood without much extra work. One tip: light the lantern glow onto the nearest side of the face before coloring the rest of the figure, it anchors the whole light source instantly.

Palette: Lantern Amber,Bright Yellow,Soft Teal,Warm Grey

Move the lantern outdoors into winter now, sitting in the snow beside a garden gate. Draw the gate first as a simple slatted rectangle, slightly leaning for character, then place the lantern low in the snow near one of its posts, using a soft curved mound shape for the snowdrift it rests in.

Light the lantern’s glow in amber against the white paper left bare for most of the snow, adding only a thin cool blue-grey shadow along one side of each snowdrift to give it shape. Keep the gate itself in warm brown or weathered grey so it does not compete with the warm glow beside it.

The biggest risk with a snow scene is overworking the white areas until they lose their brightness, so resist shading snow everywhere and let the bare paper do most of the work, adding shadow only where the lantern light clearly cannot reach. A white gel pen can push a few sparkle marks back into the snow once the marker is fully dry if it starts to feel flat.

For a next version, try the same gate and lantern after a fresh snowfall with rounder, fuller drifts, or try it at the start of a snowfall with a few flakes still falling, each one shifts the whole mood.

You Will Need

• white gel pen

Carry the lantern into a campsite now, sitting outside a small tent at night. Draw the tent first as a simple triangle shape with a short entrance flap, then place the camping lantern, a boxier, more modern shape than the garden lantern, just in front of the entrance on the ground.

Work the lantern’s glow first in a cooler white-amber mix since camping lanterns often give off a slightly whiter light than candle lanterns, then darken the tent fabric and the surrounding ground the further they sit from that glow. A few simple dark pine tree silhouettes behind the tent, just solid triangle shapes, finish the setting without much extra drawing.

If the whole scene reads as too dark and flat, check that the ground directly under the lantern is the lightest part of the page besides the glass itself, that pool of light is what sells a night campsite. Swap the tent for a simple sleeping bag shape if you want an even quicker version.

Ten minutes covers the lantern and tent outline alone. Forty minutes lets you add the tree silhouettes, a small campfire ring, and a star or two in the sky, each one a quick addition once the main glow is settled.

Take the lantern up to a balcony now, paired with a loose string of lights overhead. Draw the balcony railing first as a simple horizontal structure across the lower half of the page, then place the lantern on the railing itself or on a small side table, and loop the string lights in a gentle sagging curve above.

Color the lantern’s glow in amber first, then dot the string lights in small warm yellow circles along the curved line, spacing them unevenly rather than like a perfect row of beads. A soft dusty teal or blush wash behind everything, standing in for sky or a distant building, keeps the warm lights reading clearly against something cooler.

Too many string lights crowded together is the easiest way to lose the lantern as the main subject, so keep the count low, six to eight small dots is plenty, and let a few sit slightly larger in front to suggest they hang closer to the viewer. If yellow feels too flat alone, add a touch of amber at the center of each light dot.

For more texture in a longer sitting, add a potted plant trailing over the railing edge and a folded blanket draped over a chair nearby, both quick shapes that round out a cozy balcony scene.

Set the lantern at the center of a garden wedding table now, a fuller still life with more going on around it. Block in the table surface first as a simple pale shape, then place the lantern slightly off center so you can build a small gathering of flowers, a folded napkin or a few favors around it without crowding the composition.

Light the lantern’s glow first, then work outward into the flowers using soft blush and sage tones, keeping each bloom to a simple rounded shape rather than detailing every petal, since a wedding table reads through color and arrangement more than fine detail. The tablecloth takes a very pale wash, almost white, so nothing competes with the warm centerpiece glow.

Overcrowding the table is the most common slip here, so leave visible pale table space between objects rather than filling every inch. If flowers feel difficult, swap them for a simple candle cluster instead and let the lantern do most of the romantic work alone.

A soft blurred row of garden greenery in the background, just a loose wash of sage green behind the table, finishes the setting quickly. The carnation drawing ideas article is worth a look if you want simple flower shapes that fit nicely into a scene like this one.

Palette: Lantern Amber,Blush Pink,Sage Green,Warm Cream

Switch to a different kind of lantern now, a simple mason jar fitted with a candle and a wire handle. Draw the jar’s familiar ridged shape first, slightly narrower at the top, then add the wire handle looping over the lid before placing a small candle shape inside, this build order keeps the glass, wire and flame each reading as a separate material.

Work the candle glow in amber first, letting it spread gently through the jar’s glass with a slightly uneven edge rather than a perfectly smooth circle, since mason jar glass scatters light a little unevenly. Keep the ridges on the jar as a few short vertical marker lines rather than fully outlining every single ridge, which would make the jar look busier than it needs to.

If the jar ends up looking like a plain cylinder instead of a mason jar, check that the lid sits clearly narrower than the body, that single width change is what reads as a jar rather than a glass or vase. No wire for the handle on hand, a simple ribbon loop works as a quick swap.

Try this one again later sitting on a stack of books instead of alone, or hung from a hook outdoors, since the mason jar lantern works equally well as a tabletop piece or a hanging one once you have the basic shape down.

Palette: Lantern Amber,Warm Yellow,Payne’s Grey,Warm Grey

Return to the garden now with a lantern hung from a tall shepherd’s hook rather than a tree branch, a good subject once the earlier hanging lantern feels easy. Draw the hook first as one long curved vertical line ending in a small loop at the top, then hang the lantern from that loop, keeping the hook noticeably taller and thinner than the lantern itself.

Ground the whole hook in a small patch of garden bed, a few simple leaf and stem shapes in layered greens, before lighting the lantern glow in amber on top. This order, setting first, light last, keeps the glow sitting clearly above everything else rather than getting lost among the greenery.

A hook drawn too thick is the easiest way to lose the delicate look this piece needs, so keep the line narrow and let the lantern be the visually heavier shape by comparison. If a true curve feels tricky freehand, lightly trace a round lid or jar for the hook’s top loop before inking it.

For a bolder version, add a second smaller lantern lower on the same hook, a common way these are displayed in real gardens, and vary the two glows slightly so one reads as brighter than the other.

Palette: Lantern Amber,Sap Green,Moss Green,Warm Brown

Try a more decorative lantern now, a moroccan style with cut metal panels and small pieces of colored glass set into the sides. Draw the overall silhouette first, a tall rounded shape narrower at the top and bottom, then divide the body into several panel sections before filling each one with a different small jewel-toned color.

Work panel by panel rather than coloring the whole lantern in one pass, finishing each colored glass section with its own light edge before moving to the next, this keeps the stained-glass feel from turning muddy. Save the final metal framework lines for last, a thin dark fineliner traced carefully between each colored panel to make the whole thing look cut from metal.

Too many colors fighting each other is the main risk with this one, so limit the glass panels to three or four related jewel tones, a deep teal, a warm amber, a rich pink, rather than every color at once. If fine detail work feels slow, a simplified version with fewer, larger panels still reads clearly as moroccan style.

Once this version works well, try it again lit from inside with a candle glow pushing outward through the colored glass rather than lit evenly from outside, a noticeably different and moodier effect.

Palette: Lantern Amber,Jewel Teal,Deep Pink,Payne’s Grey

Look at reference photos of real moroccan lanterns before starting, the panel shapes are usually taller ovals or pointed arches rather than plain squares, and that detail makes the style instantly recognizable.

Set the lantern down on a wooden pier now, with a full pastel sunset filling the sky behind it. Draw the pier’s planks first in simple receding lines leading toward the horizon, then place the lantern on a post near the front of the pier so it sits clearly in the foreground against the sky beyond.

Lay the sunset sky first this time, blending soft blush into pale amber into a touch of lavender near the top, since the whole scene depends on that sky being right before the lantern glow has to sit on top of it. Once the sky is dry, add the lantern’s own warm glow, slightly stronger than the sky’s amber so it still reads as the nearer light source rather than blending into the background.

The pier often ends up too dark compared to the soft sky, so keep the plank shadows gentle and let a little of the sunset color bounce into the wood itself, a touch of blush along the top edges of a few planks. No lavender in your set, a pale soft pink stands in well for that upper sky band.

Try this same setup again at true night instead of sunset, with the sky shifted to deep blue and a few stars added, a simple change that gives a very different feeling from the same pier and lantern.

Palette: Lantern Amber,Blush Pink,Soft Lavender,Warm Brown

Pair the lantern with a sleeping cat now, curled up nearby for one of the coziest scenes on this list. Draw the cat first as a simple curled oval shape with small ear triangles and a tucked tail, since getting this shape settled correctly matters more here than any fine fur detail, then place the lantern just beside or slightly behind the cat so its glow falls across part of the curled body.

Compare the cat’s curled size to the lantern, keeping them close in height works best, a cat drawn far larger than the lantern beside it starts to look odd in scale. Light the lantern glow first, then let that same warm amber wash lightly across the side of the cat nearest the light, keeping the far side of the fur in a cooler shadow tone.

Fur texture is the part most likely to go wrong, so resist outlining individual hairs and instead use a few short curved marker strokes following the direction fur naturally grows, around the shoulder and along the tail. If markers feel too bold for fur, a soft color pencil blended over the marker base softens the edges nicely.

For a simpler version, keep the cat as a solid silhouette shape with the lantern doing all the color work. The cozy drawing ideas list has more sleepy cat scenes if this pairing becomes a favorite.

Palette: Lantern Amber,Warm Grey,Deep Brown,Cool Blue Grey

Bring the lantern indoors onto a bookshelf now, tucked among a small stack of books. Draw the shelf edge first as a simple horizontal line, then stack three or four books at slightly varied heights and angles beside the lantern, leaning one against the others rather than lining them all up perfectly straight.

Color each book spine in a different muted tone, a dusty rose, a soft sage, a warm mustard, before lighting the lantern’s glow, which should then cast a warm highlight along the edges of the books nearest to it. This order lets you judge exactly how much amber light needs to spread across the spines once their base colors are already settled.

Books lined up too evenly is the easiest way to lose interest in this scene, so vary the heights and let one lean at a slight angle against its neighbor. If a full stack feels like too much, two books and the lantern alone still makes a satisfying small study.

For a fuller version, add a small reading accessory beside the lantern, reading glasses or a bookmark ribbon trailing from one spine, each a quick addition that deepens the cozy reading-nook feeling.

Palette: Lantern Amber,Dusty Rose,Sage Green,Warm Mustard

Return to the street now, but with a tall freestanding street lamp lantern rather than a hanging one, lighting a cobbled lane. Draw the lamp post first as one long straight vertical line, slightly tapering toward the top, then add the lantern head as a boxier shape at the top rather than the rounded body used for the garden lantern earlier in this list.

Work the lamp’s glow first in amber, letting a soft pool of lighter color spread down onto the cobbles directly below it, then build the cobblestone texture with small irregular shapes in warm grey, varying their size slightly so the lane does not look like a tiled floor. A row of simple building silhouettes along one side gives the lane depth without much extra drawing time.

Cobbles drawn too uniform is the usual problem here, so let some stones sit larger, some smaller, and leave gaps of bare paper between a few of them rather than filling every inch with color. If grey feels flat, a touch of blush mixed into a few cobbles near the lamp’s glow warms up the whole lane.

The eye level for this one sits low and close to the lamp’s base, which makes the post feel tall and the light pool feel close enough to stand in. One tip for today: keep that pool of light irregular, not a perfect circle, real lamp light spreads unevenly across uneven ground.

Palette: Lantern Amber,Warm Grey,Blush Pink,Payne’s Grey

Bring the lantern back to a quieter garden moment now, resting on an old mossy stone step. Draw the stone step first as a simple thick rectangle with a slightly rough, uneven top edge, then place the lantern near one corner of it rather than dead center, which suits the slightly wild, overgrown feeling of this scene.

Color the moss first in two or three greens layered loosely around the step’s edges and in any cracks, using a stippled dabbing motion with the marker tip rather than a smooth fill, since moss texture depends on that broken, uneven color. Once the moss settles, light the lantern’s glow in amber, letting a touch of that warmth bounce faintly into the nearest patch of moss.

Smooth, flat moss is the main thing to avoid, so keep dabbing in small irregular clusters rather than one even wash, and leave a few bare stone patches showing through. No stippling brush tip on your markers, the fine nib works just as well held slightly on its side for a broken texture.

Try this scene again later with ferns unfurling beside the step instead of moss alone, or with a scatter of fallen leaves across the stone, either addition builds on the same quiet, weathered mood.

Palette: Lantern Amber,Moss Green,Sap Green,Warm Grey

Move the lantern into a greenhouse now, surrounded by a cluster of potted plants under glass. Draw the greenhouse’s glass panel frame first as a simple grid of straight lines across the background, then place the lantern on a small table or shelf among two or three varied potted plants in front of it.

Build the plants in layered greens before lighting the lantern, giving each pot a slightly different leaf shape, broad and rounded for one, long and narrow for another, so the cluster reads as varied rather than repeated. Once the greenery sits settled, add the lantern’s amber glow, letting it catch the undersides of the nearest leaves with a soft highlight.

Repeating the exact same leaf shape on every plant is the easiest way to make a greenhouse cluster look copied rather than varied, so change the leaf shape and pot size each time. If straight glass grid lines feel fussy to rule by hand, a loose, slightly uneven grid actually suits an old greenhouse better than a perfectly ruled one.

For a fuller version, add a watering can or a stack of empty pots in one corner, both quick shapes that round out the greenhouse feeling. The guide to painting trees has useful leaf shape ideas if you want more plant variety to pull from for this one.

Palette: Lantern Amber,Sap Green,Moss Green,Warm Brown

Add motion now with a lantern carried along a dark path on a night walk, swinging slightly from a hand just entering the frame at one edge. Draw the path first as a simple curving line leading into the distance, then add just a hand and forearm holding the lantern at one side of the page rather than a full figure, which keeps the focus on the glow and the path ahead.

Light the lantern first in amber, then stretch its glow forward along the path in a long soft pool, fading gradually into darker ground the further it travels from the light. Keep any background trees or hedges as simple dark silhouette shapes, since detail there would only compete with the main glow.

A glow that stops too abruptly, like a hard-edged circle, is the most common mistake, so soften its outer edge by going over it lightly with a blender marker or a slightly damp finish once the amber is dry. If you do not have a blender marker, a lighter cream marker worked gently around the glow’s edge softens it almost as well.

Try this scene again from a different angle next time, looking back over the walker’s shoulder instead of straight ahead, a small change that gives a completely different feeling of movement.

You Will Need

• blender marker (optional)

Build toward the busiest scene on this list now, a small parade of children each carrying their own lantern. Sketch three or four simple figures first, spaced unevenly along a loose path, each holding a lantern shape slightly different from the others, round, boxy, star-shaped, so the group feels varied rather than copied.

Work from the back of the group forward, lighting each lantern glow in amber before moving to the next figure, which helps keep every glow consistent in strength even with several to manage. Keep the figures themselves simple, rounded coat shapes and small round heads, since detailed faces across several figures would slow this piece down without adding much warmth.

Too many evenly sized figures in a straight row is the easiest way to flatten a parade scene, so vary their heights slightly and let one figure sit a little ahead or behind the rest. If a full group feels like too much at once, start with two children and build up to more once that pair feels balanced.

For a quicker ten-minute version, silhouette the children entirely in dark tones and let only the lanterns carry color. The kawaii sketchbook ideas article has simple figure shapes worth looking at if figures like these still feel new to you.

Palette: Lantern Amber,Payne’s Grey,Soft Teal,Blush Pink

Settle back into a quieter indoor scene now, a lantern sharing a windowsill with a trailing fern. Draw the window frame and sill edge first as simple straight lines, then place the lantern toward one side with the fern’s pot on the other, letting a few fern fronds drape down over the sill’s edge for some gentle movement.

Color the fern in two or three layered greens, working each frond as a single curved stroke rather than many tiny separate leaflets, since a loose, simplified frond reads just as well at this scale and keeps the piece from feeling fussy. Once the greenery settles, light the lantern’s amber glow, letting it catch the nearest frond tips with a soft warm highlight.

Overly stiff, straight fern fronds are the main thing to watch for, so curve each one gently and let a few cross over each other rather than keeping them perfectly parallel. No fern reference on hand, any trailing houseplant shape, even a simple ivy, works just as well in this spot.

Try the same windowsill again later with the window showing a daylight scene instead of evening, which shifts the whole mood from cozy glow to a brighter, calmer daytime study using the same simple setup.

Palette: Lantern Amber,Sap Green,Moss Green,Soft Teal

Close the list with the lantern settled on a porch rail in autumn, a fitting last scene after so many evening glows. Draw the porch rail first as a simple horizontal bar, then set the lantern on top of it with a scatter of a few fallen leaves tucked around its base, using simple rounded leaf shapes rather than detailed veined ones.

Color the leaves first in warm rust, mustard and deep orange tones, layering two shades on a few of them for richness, before lighting the lantern’s own amber glow on top. This order lets the autumn leaf colors sit as a warm base that the lantern glow can sit comfortably within rather than fighting against.

If the leaves and the lantern glow start to blend into one indistinct orange mass, cool the rail itself down with a grey-brown tone to separate the warm elements from their surroundings. Swap rust for a deep burgundy marker if your set runs short on true autumn orange.

Once this one works, try swapping the single lantern for a small cluster of two, one lit brighter than the other, a simple variation that gives the same cozy autumn porch a slightly different focal point each time you revisit it.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever lantern setting caught your eye first, a garden branch or a rainy window are both forgiving places to start, and keep a sheet of smooth marker paper and your fineliner ready before you begin. Work the glow first every time, then build the rest of the scene around it, and you will have a finished piece well within one sitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paper works best for lantern drawing with alcohol markers?

Smooth, bleed-resistant marker paper works best, since it keeps colors blending evenly without feathering through the fineliner lines. Cheaper copy paper tends to soak up color unevenly and dulls the glow effect these pieces depend on.

How do you make a lantern look like it is actually glowing?

Leave a small patch of bare white paper near the lightest point of the glass before adding any color, then build the amber outward from that spot. Darkening everything around the lantern afterward makes the glow read as light rather than flat orange.

Should I ink the lantern before or after adding color?

Ink the main outline first with a fineliner, then add marker color inside it, finishing with a few final dark linework details once the color is fully dry. Coloring first often smudges fresh ink and muddies the clean line the style depends on.

What if I do not have amber or orange markers for the glow?

A warm yellow blended with a touch of brown or coral gets close to the same glowing effect. The key is keeping it warm and slightly saturated rather than pale, since a weak color will not read as light against a darker scene.

How do I keep a whole scene with a lantern from looking too busy?
