34 Christmas Window Drawing Ideas From Paris Shop Windows to Cozy Home Windows

37

A christmas window drawing gives you something a plain still life never does: a frame already built in, light already glowing on one side and cold blue dark pressing on the other. Every pane of glass becomes a little stage, and whatever happens behind it, a cat curled on books, a family trimming a tree, a woman pausing mid step, turns into a tiny story you get to finish in one sitting.

Below you will find thirty four of them, from a Paris patisserie stacked with bûches de Noël to a grandmother knitting under lamplight. Work through them in any order, pick whichever window pulls you in tonight, and let the frost and the warm glow do most of the storytelling for you.

Start the Paris patisserie window with a tall narrow rectangle, since Parisian shopfronts run taller than they are wide, and that proportion alone will make the scene read as French before you add a single pastry. Pencil in the window frame first, then a shallow shelf or two running across the lower half for the display.

Build each bûche de Noël as a simple log shape, a rounded rectangle with a wavy top edge, then repeat it three or four times at slightly different sizes so the display feels full without turning fussy. Color the chocolate bark in warm browns, then add tiny white pencil lines for the bark texture and a dusting of white gel pen snow on top.

Where this goes wrong is crowding the shelf until it looks cluttered. Keep gaps between the cakes and let one or two small gold ornaments or a sprig of holly fill the empty spots instead. If you do not have a brown pencil range, a warm sepia marker layered under brown pencil gets you the same rich tone.

Finish with soft blue frost creeping in from the corners of the glass, left loosest where the warm shelf light meets it.

You Will Need

• smooth drawing paper
• brown and sepia colored pencils
• white gel pen
• fine tip black marker

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cream,Gold Ochre,Payne’s Grey

Look at real bûche de Noël photos for the bark pattern, a few wavy parallel lines say more than careful fork marks ever will.

The New York department store window works best wide rather than tall, since these window displays stretch out like a little stage. Block in a wide rectangle, then divide it loosely into thirds with faint pencil lines to plan where each dancing doll will stand.

Draw the dolls as simple jointed figures, oval heads, triangle skirts, arms lifted mid twirl, and keep their poses varied so the eye travels across the scene. A useful trick here is comparing each doll’s head size against her skirt width before you commit to ink or color, since dolls with heads too large read as toys rather than dancers.

Color the dolls in rich reds and golds under a string of small warm lights along the top of the window. The common mistake is making the background too busy, so keep the back wall a flat deep green or burgundy and let the dolls stay the brightest thing in the frame.

If markers run dry, colored pencil pressed firmly in layers gives the same saturated doll costumes.

You Will Need

• red and gold colored pencils or markers
• ruler for the frame lines
• white gel pen
• black fineliner

Palette: Crimson Red,Antique Gold,Deep Green,Warm White

Try overlapping two dolls slightly so their skirts touch, it reads as a dance rather than a row of toys standing still.

A bookshop window with a cat asleep on books gives you a quiet, easy subject to build confidence on. Sketch the window frame first, then a loose pile of books leaning at slightly different angles, since perfectly stacked books look stiff next to a sleeping animal.

Draw the cat as a soft oval curled on top, tail tucked around, with no visible feet, just a rounded loaf shape. This is where a kneaded eraser earns its place: once the cat’s outline is down in pencil, press the eraser gently along the top edge of the fur to lift soft highlights rather than drawing every hair.

Color the books in muted reds, greens and browns so the cat’s warm orange or grey fur stands out against them. The usual mistake is making the cat too detailed and stiff, so keep its face simple, closed eyes as two curved lines, nose a tiny triangle.

Finish with a small fairy light string draped across the top of the window for warmth. Try the pencil Christmas drawing ideas page for more cozy pencil-only scenes like this one.

You Will Need

• colored pencils in warm browns and oranges
• kneaded eraser
• fine black pen for book spines
• white gel pen

Palette: Burnt Orange,Forest Green,Chestnut,Soft Cream

Sketch the cat’s pose from a real sleeping cat photo, the curl of the spine is what sells the whole scene, not the fur detail.

Which comes first, the window or the flowers, matters less than getting the amaryllis shape right, so start there. Draw each amaryllis as a cluster of four or five trumpet shapes radiating from one point atop a tall straight stem, repeated in a loose row across the window.

Vary the eye level for this one: if you draw the window straight on, the flower trumpets face you directly, but tilting the view slightly upward lets you show the inside of each bloom, which reads as far more lush and worth lingering over. Light the scene with a warm glow from behind, so the deep red petals glow brighter near the top of the window where the bulbs sit closest to the interior light.

Color the petals in two reds, a deep base and a brighter red layered on top near the center, with a touch of yellow at the throat of each bloom. The common mistake is making every flower face forward, so angle a few stems sideways.

If red pencil feels flat, add a thin wash of red marker underneath before layering pencil on top for extra depth.

You Will Need

• deep red and bright red pencils or markers
• yellow pencil for flower centers
• green pencil for stems
• white gel pen

Palette: Scarlet Red,Deep Burgundy,Golden Yellow,Leaf Green

Group the amaryllis stems at slightly uneven heights, three tall and two shorter, it keeps the display from looking planted in a straight row.

Family decorating the tree behind frosted glass asks you to draw figures without drawing faces in much detail, which makes it friendlier than it looks. Block in a tall evergreen shape first, slightly lopsided branches read more natural than a perfect triangle, then add two or three simple standing figures around it, one reaching up, one seated on the floor handing ornaments.

Keep the figures as soft silhouettes rather than detailed portraits, since the frosted glass between you and them is doing the blurring for you. This is the spot for your best frosty edge trick: layer light blue and white pencil in soft circular strokes over the whole window, heaviest at the corners, then use a kneaded eraser to lift a few clear streaks where the warm light shows through strongest.

Color the tree in deep greens with small warm dots of ornament color, red, gold, soft pink. The usual mistake is making the frost so heavy nothing behind it reads, so always leave one clear patch in the middle of the glass.

Swap white pencil for a white colored pencil blended with a tissue if gel pen feels too stark.

You Will Need

• blue and white colored pencils
• green pencils for the tree
• kneaded eraser
• tissue for blending

Palette: Pine Green,Frost Blue,Warm Gold,Soft White

Try adding one figure mid motion, arms stretched toward the top of the tree, it gives the whole window a sense of a moment caught rather than a posed scene.

Picture the window seat before the girl, since that shape anchors the whole drawing. Sketch a deep window nook with a cushioned seat, then add the girl sitting cross legged or with knees pulled up, book open on her lap, head tilted slightly down toward the page.

A string of fairy lights draped along the window frame is the easy version of this idea, done in ten minutes with a few dotted gold circles and a soft yellow glow around each one. The forty minute version adds a knitted blanket over her legs, a mug on the sill beside her, and softly falling snow visible through the glass behind her.

Color her sweater in a warm muted tone, rust, cranberry or mustard, so she stands out gently against the cooler blues of the window and night sky. The common mistake is making the fairy lights too uniform, so vary their glow size slightly and let two or three sit a little dimmer than the rest.

If you lack a yellow highlighter for the light glow, a soft yellow pencil pressed in small circular layers does the same warm halo.

You Will Need

• warm toned pencils for the sweater
• yellow and gold pencils for the lights
• blue pencils for the window glass
• white gel pen for snow

Palette: Rust Orange,Mustard Yellow,Dusty Blue,Cream

Study a photo of someone curled up reading to get the knee and shoulder angles right, a stiff pose breaks the cozy feeling fastest.

Center the rocking horse first, since it anchors the whole toy shop window and everything else arranges around it. Draw its body as a simple rounded barrel shape on curved rockers, mane and tail as a few flowing pencil lines, then add a circular train track curling around its base with a small train, three or four simple round cars, following the loop.

Compare the horse’s height against the window frame before adding anything else, it should fill roughly two thirds of the window’s height so it reads as the star of the display rather than one toy among many. Color the horse in a warm cream or dapple grey with a red saddle, and keep the train cars in bright primary colors so they pop against the horse’s softer tones.

The usual mistake is cramming in too many extra toys until the display looks cluttered. Add at most one or two small extras, a drum, a wrapped gift, tucked into the corners.

If you do not have a grey pencil for dappling, white pencil dotted over light brown gives the same soft dapple effect.

You Will Need

• cream and grey pencils for the horse
• red pencil for the saddle
• primary color pencils for the train
• black fineliner for details

Palette: Warm Cream,Dapple Grey,Candy Red,Royal Blue

Add tiny wrapped presents under the horse’s rockers to ground the scene, they read as toy shop clutter without stealing attention.

Gingerbread houses stack well in a window, so draw three or four at different sizes along a shelf, each a simple house shape, a square base topped with a triangle roof. Vary the roof angle slightly on each one so they do not look identical.

Outline the icing details last, after the gingerbread brown base color is fully laid down, using white gel pen for the icing drips along each roofline and a few dots for candy decorations. This is where pressure control matters most: press lightly for thin icing lines and firmer for the thicker drips pooling at the roof edge, since real icing never flows in a perfectly even line.

Color the walls in warm toasted brown, then add small colored dots, red, green, white, for candy buttons pressed into the walls. The common mistake is making the icing too neat, so let a few lines wobble and drip unevenly on purpose.

If gel pen skips on your paper, a fine white paint pen gives a similar raised icing look. The bakery drawing tutorials page has more shopfront ideas if this one hooks you.

You Will Need

• brown pencils for gingerbread
• white gel pen for icing
• small dot colors for candy
• fine black pen for outlines

Palette: Toasted Brown,Icing White,Candy Red,Mint Green

Look at real gingerbread house photos for how icing pools unevenly at corners, that imperfection is what makes the drawing look edible.

Getting the glass contact right is the whole trick here, so start with her head tilted slightly forward, nose and one hand touching the glass, breath fogging a small circle around her face. Draw her in profile or three quarter view, since a straight front view makes the pressed nose harder to read clearly.

Keep her clothing simple, a coat collar turned up, a knit hat, so the eye goes straight to the gesture of looking in rather than getting lost in costume detail. The glass fog circle is the detail that sells the whole idea: draw it as a soft white smudge, slightly oval, with the edges a little uneven since breath never fogs a perfect circle.

Color her coat in a deep warm tone, burgundy or forest green, against the cool blue night behind her. The usual mistake is making her too stiff and upright, so lean her shoulder slightly toward the glass to suggest real curiosity.

If you do not have a blending stump for the fog circle, a cotton swab softens pencil edges just as well.

You Will Need

• skin tone pencils
• deep coat color pencils
• white pencil or blending stump for fog
• blue pencils for the night background

Palette: Burgundy,Soft Skin Tone,Midnight Blue,Frost White

Study your own reflection leaning toward a window for the shoulder and neck angle, it keeps the pose from looking flat or posed.

String the paper star lanterns in a loose diagonal line across the window rather than a straight row, since a slight stagger feels more handmade and lively. Draw each star as a simple five or six pointed shape, varying the size slightly so the smallest sits near one corner and the largest near the center.

Quick version, ten minutes: outline the stars, fill them with warm yellow and a soft orange glow radiating a short distance around each point. Forty minute version adds a faint pencil pattern of lines radiating from the center of each star to suggest the folded paper texture real lanterns have, plus a soft wash of blue dusk behind them.

Color the glow with gentle layered yellow, lightest at the star’s edge and brightest right at its points. The common mistake is making every star glow the same brightness, so dim one or two slightly to add depth to the string.

If you do not have an orange pencil, blending red and yellow pencil together gives the same warm glow.

You Will Need

• yellow and orange pencils
• blue pencils for dusk background
• black fineliner for star outlines
• white gel pen for tiny highlights

Palette: Warm Yellow,Soft Orange,Dusk Blue,Pale Cream

Try hanging the stars at different heights on their strings rather than one level line, it reads as a window someone decorated by hand.

Seat two simple figures at a small round table first, facing each other at a slight angle rather than straight on, since direct profile views make sharing a dessert look stiff. Place one plate between them with two forks angled toward it, that small detail does most of the storytelling.

Draw the dessert itself as a simple layered shape, a slice of cake or a shared pastry, kept loose rather than detailed, since it sits in the background of the real subject, which is the couple’s closeness. Light the scene from a hanging pendant lamp above the table, which drops warm light down onto their faces and the tabletop while the window frame around them stays cooler and dimmer.

Color their clothing in warm complementary tones, one in rust, one in deep green, so they read as a pair without matching exactly. The usual mistake is making the table too large, leave it small and intimate.

Swap a pendant lamp for a candle on the table if you want a softer, lower light source. The dessert drawing lessons page covers plenty of pastry shapes if you want to practice the cake separately first.

You Will Need

• warm clothing color pencils
• pencils for the dessert layers
• yellow pencil for the lamp glow
• blue pencils for the window frame

Palette: Rust,Deep Green,Warm Yellow,Cool Blue

Angle both figures slightly toward the shared plate instead of toward each other directly, it reads as a quiet, easy moment rather than a posed photo.

Build the window box itself first, a simple rectangular container sitting just below the window frame, then pile the greenery up and over its edges rather than keeping it neat inside the box. Real pine arrangements spill outward, so let a few branches droop past the box’s sides.

Layer the pine in two or three greens, darkest at the base where branches overlap, lightest at the tips catching whatever light falls on them, which keeps the greenery from reading as one flat mass. Scatter small red berry clusters in groups of three or five rather than evenly spaced, since odd numbers and loose clusters look more natural than a grid.

The common mistake is making every pine needle distinct, which takes forever and looks fussy. Instead draw clumps of needles as short overlapping strokes in one direction, letting the overall shape read as pine rather than counting individual needles.

If you lack a true pine green, mix blue and green pencil layers for a cooler, more convincing evergreen tone.

You Will Need

• two or three shades of green pencil
• red pencil for berries
• brown pencil for the window box
• white gel pen for a dusting of snow

Palette: Deep Pine,Sage Green,Holly Red,Weathered Brown

Add a few sprigs of eucalyptus or holly leaves among the pine for variety, it breaks up the green without adding much extra drawing time.

Round windows change the whole composition, so draw the circle first using a plate or lid to trace a clean edge, then fit the cat sitting inside it in silhouette, tail curled neatly around its front paws. A round frame means the snow outside reads as a little world of its own, floating independent of straight architectural lines.

Keep the cat as a simple dark silhouette against the lighter window glass, since the contrast is what makes this one work rather than any fur detail. Add falling snow as small white gel pen dots scattered unevenly outside the glass, heavier near the top of the circle and lighter toward the bottom, which suggests snow drifting down rather than frozen in place.

Color the interior glow around the cat in soft warm cream fading into the cooler blue glass at the circle’s edge. The usual mistake is making the cat’s silhouette too detailed, so keep it as clean ears, a simple curved back, one tail line.

If you do not have a compass or lid handy, free handing the circle lightly in pencil first and correcting with an eraser works fine too.

You Will Need

• plate or lid to trace a circle
• black or dark grey pencil for the cat
• blue pencils for the glass
• white gel pen for snow

Palette: Charcoal Black,Frost Blue,Warm Cream,Snow White

Try a round window shape again later with a dog or a bird instead of a cat, the circular frame flatters almost any single curled up animal.

Trade the usual green tree for a pale pink one here, since a boutique window leans decorative rather than traditional. Draw the tree in simple layered triangle tiers, then color it in soft blush pink with tiny gold or white dots scattered across it for ornaments rather than full baubles.

Arrange two or three shopping bags at the base of the tree, simple rectangular shapes with folded top edges and thin ribbon handles, tilted slightly against each other rather than standing perfectly straight. This is a good spot to try the subject again differently next time: swap the pink tree for a soft gold or icy white one, or trade the shopping bags for wrapped gift boxes stacked instead.

Color the bags in two or three coordinating tones, blush, cream, soft grey, so the whole window feels like one styled palette rather than a random mix. The common mistake is making the tree the same pink as the bags, so shift the tree’s pink slightly warmer or cooler to keep them distinct.

If pink pencil runs pale, a light layer of red under the pink deepens it without losing the softness.

You Will Need

• blush pink and soft gold pencils
• cream and grey pencils for the bags
• white gel pen for sparkle dots
• black fineliner for bag outlines

Palette: Blush Pink,Soft Gold,Warm Cream,Dove Grey

Add a thin ribbon bow to one shopping bag in a contrasting color, it gives the eye a small bright spot to land on first.

Stack the truffles into two or three cone shaped towers rather than a flat row, since a pyramid shape reads instantly as a display rather than a plate. Draw each truffle as a simple circle, then layer rows of circles narrowing toward the top of each tower.

Dry brushing is not just for paint, colored pencil can do something similar: lay down a base layer of brown, then use a nearly spent or lightly pressed pencil in a slightly lighter brown to skim across the truffle surface, which suggests the slightly bumpy, dusted texture of real chocolate without drawing every speck of cocoa powder.

Color the truffles in varied browns, milk, dark, and a few dusted white for coconut or powdered sugar ones, so the towers do not read as one solid color block. The usual mistake is making every truffle identical, so vary the size slightly and let a few sit slightly off center in their row.

If you lack multiple browns, warm the base brown with a touch of orange pencil on top for a lighter cocoa tone instead.

You Will Need

• several shades of brown pencil
• white pencil for dusted truffles
• gold pencil for foil wrapper accents
• fine black pen for outlines

Palette: Milk Chocolate,Dark Cocoa,Dusted White,Antique Gold

Add a few gold foil wrapper shapes tucked between the truffles, a small gold triangle or circle breaks up the brown and catches the light.

Line up two or three cameras on a shelf first, simple boxy bodies with a round lens circle on the front, varying their size and angle slightly so they do not look mass produced. Old cameras have more texture and character than new ones, so keep their shapes a little chunky and imperfect.

Tuck a small tree between or beside the cameras, scaled down to fit the shelf rather than towering over the display, a nice contrast to the usual full sized shop tree. Color the cameras in muted browns, blacks and brassy golds, since vintage equipment rarely comes in bright color, which makes the small tree’s green and red the brightest thing in the window.

The common mistake is making the lens circles too perfect and shiny, so add one soft pencil highlight crescent on each lens rather than a bullseye of rings.

If you do not have a brass or gold pencil, a yellow ochre pencil layered over brown gives a similar aged metal tone. Browse the Christmas scene drawing ideas page for more shopfront inspiration if vintage shops appeal to you.

You Will Need

• brown and black pencils for the cameras
• gold ochre pencil for metal details
• green and red pencils for the tiny tree
• white gel pen for highlights

Palette: Vintage Black,Brass Gold,Walnut Brown,Pine Green

Add one small price tag or label dangling from a camera strap, a tiny detail like that makes the whole shop feel lived in and real.

Arrange three or four perfume bottles in a loose cluster rather than a straight line, varying their shapes, a tall slender one, a short round one, a square bottle, so the display reads as a curated collection rather than identical stock. Draw each bottle’s cap with a bit of extra care since that small shape often carries the most personality.

Tie a ribbon bow around the neck of one or two bottles, drawn as a simple loop with two trailing tails, which instantly reads as a Christmas gift rather than an everyday display. Light the bottles from behind or below with a soft warm glow, since perfume glass catches light best when it has something to catch, add a small highlight streak down one side of each bottle where the light hits the glass directly.

Color the bottles in soft jewel tones, amber, rose, pale green, against a deep velvet backdrop color. The usual mistake is making the glass too opaque, so keep bottle colors translucent with a visible highlight streak.

Swap colored pencil for a light wash of marker under the pencil if you want glass to look extra glossy.

You Will Need

• jewel tone pencils for the bottles
• white gel pen for glass highlights
• ribbon color pencils for bows
• dark pencil for the velvet backdrop

Palette: Amber,Dusty Rose,Pale Sage,Velvet Plum

Try adding a faint reflection of the bottle beneath it on the shelf, a short mirrored smudge makes the glass feel more convincing.

Fill the window with rows of candles at different heights rather than one even line, since varied heights let the eye travel through the display instead of skimming flat across it. Draw each candle as a simple cylinder topped with a small flame shape, two curved lines meeting at a point.

Where the light sits matters most in this one: since every candle is its own small light source, the glow should radiate outward from each flame individually rather than from one central spot, which means softer overlapping halos of yellow and orange rather than one wash of light across the whole window. Keep the glow strongest right around each flame and fading quickly into the cooler surrounding glass.

Color the candles themselves in creams, soft pinks and sage greens, letting the warm flame glow be the brightest color in the whole piece. The common mistake is making every flame the exact same size and brightness, so vary two or three slightly dimmer or smaller to suggest depth.

If yellow pencil looks too flat for the glow, blend a little white pencil into the center of each flame highlight first.

You Will Need

• cream and pastel pencils for the candles
• yellow and orange pencils for the flames
• blue pencils for the surrounding glass
• white gel pen for sparkle

Palette: Warm Cream,Soft Sage,Flame Yellow,Ember Orange

Group the candles in clusters of three at varied heights rather than one long row, it mimics how real candle displays are usually arranged.

Seat the dog squarely in the doorway first, since this subject depends on getting a dog’s sitting posture believable, straight front legs, haunches tucked under, head slightly tilted as if watching passersby. Compare the width of its chest against the height of its head before adding the sweater, a dog drawn too narrow in the chest will look like it is wearing a sweater built for a different animal.

Draw the sweater as a simple fitted shape around the torso with a ribbed pattern of short horizontal lines at the collar and cuffs, colored in a cheerful red or green that contrasts with the dog’s coat. Keep the doorway behind simple, a wreath on the door, warm light spilling from a window beside it, so the dog stays the clear focus.

The usual mistake is making the dog’s legs too short or stiff, so round the joints slightly and let one paw turn a little outward for a relaxed, natural seated pose.

Swap breeds easily, a small terrier shape or a floppy eared spaniel both work fine here. Check the dog pencil drawing ideas page for more guidance on dog proportions.

You Will Need

• brown or grey pencils for the dog’s coat
• red or green pencil for the sweater
• black fineliner for the doorway details
• white gel pen for snow on the step

Palette: Warm Fawn,Cranberry Red,Pine Green,Soft Grey

Look at a reference photo of a seated dog from the front for how the front paws align, that alignment is what makes the pose look stable and real.

Give both symbols equal visual weight here, since this window tells a story about a shared home. Draw the menorah on one side, a simple branched candlestick shape with nine small flame tips, and the tree on the other, kept a similar height so neither symbol dominates the scene.

Light the menorah’s candles in warm golden flames and the tree in its own small string of warm lights, letting both glow sources blend softly in the middle of the window rather than staying in two separate pools of light. That overlap in the center is what makes the window feel like one warm room rather than two separate scenes pasted together.

Color the tree in traditional green with a few red and gold ornaments, and the menorah in a soft brass or silver tone depending on preference. The common mistake is placing them too far apart, so keep them close enough that their light glows visibly meet.

If you do not have a silver pencil, light grey blended with a touch of blue gives a convincing metallic sheen instead.

You Will Need

• gold or silver pencil for the menorah
• green and red pencils for the tree
• yellow and orange pencils for both flame sources
• white gel pen for highlights

Palette: Brass Gold,Pine Green,Candle Flame Yellow,Soft Silver Grey

Let the warm light from both the menorah and the tree overlap slightly in the center of the window, that shared glow is the heart of this drawing.

Line a baking tray along the windowsill first, then draw five or six simple round cookies on it, each with a slightly different icing pattern, a star, a snowflake, a simple zigzag, so the tray feels handmade rather than uniform. Overlap the tray’s edge slightly with the window frame to ground it in place.

This one works well as a quick study: in ten minutes, outline the tray and cookies and lay in flat warm colors. In forty minutes, add steam lines rising faintly from one or two cookies, a wisp of white pencil or a few short curved lines drifting upward, which suggests they just came out of the oven.

Color the cookies in warm golden brown with white icing details on top, and let a faint warm glow fill the kitchen behind the tray, suggesting an oven light or a hanging pendant lamp. The usual mistake is making every cookie identical, so vary the icing pattern on at least half of them.

If white gel pen feels too thick for fine icing lines, a fine white colored pencil sharpened to a point gives a thinner line instead.

You Will Need

• golden brown pencils for the cookies
• white gel pen or pencil for icing
• grey pencil for faint steam lines
• warm yellow pencil for the kitchen glow

Palette: Golden Brown,Icing White,Warm Kitchen Yellow,Soft Grey

Add a small kitchen towel or oven mitt draped near the tray, a tiny prop like that fills the window with story without much extra drawing time.

An arched window changes the geometry of everything inside it, so draw the curved top carefully first, using a soft curve rather than a sharp peak, before placing anything else. Hang a simple wreath, a ring of overlapping pine sprigs with a red bow at the bottom, centered just below the arch’s curve so it follows the window’s shape naturally.

Compare the wreath’s diameter against the width of the arch before you commit to size, it should sit comfortably inside the curve with a visible margin of glass around it rather than touching the frame on both sides. Layer the pine in two greens and let a few sprigs cross over the bow’s ribbon for a natural, slightly imperfect look.

Frost this window heavily along the curved edge especially, since arches tend to collect visual interest at their rounded top, blending white and pale blue pencil in soft circular strokes. The common mistake is frosting evenly all around, so build it up thicker at the arch’s peak and thinner near the bottom sill.

Swap a wreath for a simple pine garland draped along the arch if a full circle feels too fussy to draw.

You Will Need

• pencils for the arched frame outline
• green pencils for the wreath
• red pencil for the bow
• blue and white pencils for frost

Palette: Pine Green,Holly Red,Frost Blue,Soft White

Try sketching the arch with a coin or lid as a guide for the curve if freehand curves feel shaky, a clean curve makes the whole window look intentional.

Ballet studio windows ask for figures in motion, so sketch two or three dancers in simple poses first, one at the barre with a leg extended, one mid turn, arms curved overhead, kept as soft gestural shapes rather than detailed figures. A few quick lines for the pose matter far more here than careful anatomy.

Measure the dancers against the window height before adding detail, they should fill roughly the lower two thirds of the window so the space above them, suggesting the tall studio ceiling, has room to breathe. Keep their tutus and leotards simple, soft pink or cream, with just a hint of warm stage light catching one shoulder or raised arm.

The usual mistake is making every dancer the same height and pose, so vary their positions and let one face away from the window while the others face toward it.

If figures feel intimidating, simplify further: draw them as soft silhouettes only, with no facial features at all, letting the poses alone tell the story. A small string of twinkle lights along the studio ceiling adds a festive touch without extra figure work.

You Will Need

• soft pink and cream pencils for costumes
• skin tone pencil for limbs
• black fineliner for pose outlines
• yellow pencil for warm stage light

Palette: Soft Blush Pink,Warm Cream,Stage Light Yellow,Charcoal Grey

Study a photo of a dancer mid pose for the curve of the spine and the angle of the lifted arm, that single curve carries most of the motion.

Fill a small shelf or stand with four or five hats of different styles, a wide brimmed felt hat, a knit beanie with a pompom, a small pillbox with a feather, so the variety carries the display rather than repeating one shape. Draw each hat’s crown and brim as simple rounded forms before adding any trim.

Color each hat in a different seasonal tone, burgundy, forest green, cream, charcoal, so the shelf reads as a curated little collection rather than a uniform row. Add trim details last, a pompom as a small scribbled circle, a feather as a few curved pencil strokes, a ribbon band as a thin colored line around the base of the crown.

The common mistake is making every hat sit at the same angle, so tilt one or two slightly, as if just placed down by a customer trying them on. A small mirror propped nearby, a simple oval outline, adds a nice extra touch without much work.

Swap felt texture for simple flat color if texture feels fussy, flat color with a bold outline still reads clearly as a hat shop display.

You Will Need

• assorted color pencils for each hat
• black fineliner for trim details
• white pencil for pompom highlights
• grey pencil for a small mirror outline

Palette: Burgundy Felt,Forest Green,Warm Cream,Charcoal

Add a small price tag dangling from one hat’s brim, that tiny detail instantly reads as a shop display rather than a pile of hats at home.

Round and wedge shapes make this window simple to build: draw two or three cheese wheels as flattened circles and a few wedge cuts as simple triangles, arranged on a wooden board or shelf. Keep the shapes loose and slightly irregular, since real cheese wheels are never perfectly round.

Drape a pine garland along the top of the shelf or across the window frame above the display, using the same layered green strokes as other evergreen subjects in this list, with small red berries tucked in every so often. The garland frames the cheese display the way a ribbon frames a gift.

Color the cheese in warm creams and pale yellows, with a slightly darker rind line around the edge of each wheel. The usual mistake is making the cheese look flat and plastic, so add a few small texture dots or tiny holes on the lighter wheels to suggest real cheese surface.

If a wooden board feels tricky, a simple flat shelf painted in warm brown works just as well as a base for the display.

You Will Need

• cream and pale yellow pencils for cheese
• brown pencil for rind and shelf
• green pencils for the garland
• red pencil for berries

Palette: Pale Cream,Golden Yellow,Warm Brown,Pine Green

Add a small wooden cheese knife resting beside one wheel, a simple prop like that makes the display feel freshly set out rather than static.

Give the couple a slight lean into each other rather than standing perfectly upright, since dance poses depend on weight shifting to one side. Draw them as simple figures, one hand raised and joined, the other resting at the waist or shoulder, feet positioned mid step rather than flat and still.

Where you put the light source changes the whole mood here: a single warm lamp or chandelier glow from above casts soft shadows down past their shoulders, which reads as an intimate, quiet dance, while light from one side creates longer dramatic shadows across the floor if you want something bolder. Either way keep the window itself simply framed so the dancing figures stay the clear focus.

Color their clothing in one warm and one cooler tone so they read as two distinct people even in silhouette, and let the floor beneath them carry a soft warm glow pool. The common mistake is making both figures face the viewer, so turn them toward each other instead.

If full figures feel difficult, simplify to silhouettes only, no facial features needed for this one to read clearly.

You Will Need

• warm and cool tone pencils for clothing
• black fineliner for figure outlines
• yellow pencil for the light glow
• blue pencils for the window frame

Palette: Warm Rust,Cool Navy,Lamp Glow Yellow,Soft Blue Grey

Try drawing the pair as soft silhouettes against a warm glowing floor, it keeps the mood intimate without needing detailed faces or hands.

Build the frost layer first across the entire window, soft overlapping strokes of white and pale blue pencil covering most of the glass, before you touch the heart shape at all. This one depends on contrast, so the frost needs to feel thick and complete before you take any of it away.

Draw a simple heart in the center, then use a kneaded eraser pinched to a small point to carefully lift the frost pencil away inside the heart’s outline, revealing the clean white paper beneath. This lifting technique is the entire trick of the piece, work slowly and re-press the eraser into a clean point often so the heart’s edge stays crisp rather than smudged.

Add a faint warm glow just visible through the cleared heart shape, suggesting light from inside the room beyond the glass. The usual mistake is making the heart too large, keep it modest, roughly a third of the window’s height, so it reads as a small personal gesture rather than a shop sign.

If a kneaded eraser is not on hand, a rolled bit of white tack works the same way for lifting pencil cleanly.

You Will Need

• white and pale blue pencils for frost
• kneaded eraser
• yellow pencil for the warm glow
• ruler for the window frame

Try lifting a small word or initial instead of a heart next time, the same eraser technique works for any simple shape traced lightly first in pencil.

Seat the child at a small desk or table pulled close to the window, pencil in hand, paper in front of them, head tilted down in concentration. Keep the figure simple and a little rounded, since younger figures read better with soft proportions, a bigger head relative to the body, short stubby fingers around the pencil.

Place the window itself just beyond the desk, showing a hint of snow or string lights outside to tie the scene to the season without overcrowding the child’s corner of the drawing. The paper on the desk can carry a few scribbled lines suggesting handwriting, nothing legible needed, just short dashes to imply a list in progress.

Color the scene in warm lamp light tones around the child, with the cooler window glass behind providing contrast. The common mistake is making the child’s pose too stiff and adult like, so round the shoulders slightly and let one leg swing or tuck under the chair.

If drawing a full desk feels like too much, simplify to just the child, a sheet of paper, and the window behind, no extra furniture needed.

You Will Need

• skin tone pencils for the child
• warm pencils for pajamas or sweater
• yellow pencil for the lamp glow
• blue pencils for the window behind

Palette: Soft Skin Tone,Warm Pajama Red,Lamp Glow Yellow,Cool Window Blue

Add a small candle or mug beside the paper, a tiny prop like that makes the scene feel cozier without adding much extra drawing work.

An unexpected subject like a laundromat window earns its place on this list because the round washer doors make such good glowing shapes. Draw a row of three or four circular washer doors along the window, each outlined with a slightly thick rim, and string a few warm lights loosely across the top of the window frame.

This is a nice one to try twice: the first pass keeps it simple, plain circular doors with warm light glowing from inside a couple of them as if mid cycle. A second attempt could add small piles of folded laundry on a counter nearby, or a potted plant on the windowsill, building out the scene further once the basic window feels comfortable.

Color the machines in brushed steel grey with a warm golden glow through the glass doors, and let the string lights add small dots of red and green along the top edge. The usual mistake is making every washer door identical, so vary which ones glow and which stay dark.

If grey pencil looks flat, blend a little blue pencil over it for a cooler metallic sheen instead.

You Will Need

• grey and blue pencils for the machines
• yellow pencil for the glowing doors
• red and green pencils for string lights
• black fineliner for outlines

Pick an unexpected everyday window like this one again later, a corner shop or a bus stop decorated for the season makes a fun, less obvious subject.

Arrange five or six tiny ceramic house ornaments on a shelf, each a simple square body with a triangle roof, varied slightly in size and roof angle so the collection feels handmade rather than mass produced. Keep the houses small and close together, almost like a miniature village sitting in the window.

Compare each house’s roof width against its base width before adding windows and doors, keeping that ratio consistent across the group helps them read as a cohesive set even with size variation. Paint tiny glowing windows on one or two houses, a small warm yellow square or two, to suggest the ornaments light up from within.

Color the houses in soft matte tones, cream, sage, dusty blue, rather than bright shiny colors, since ceramic pieces typically have a softer painted finish. The common mistake is making every house the same color, so vary the palette across the little village.

If a fine brush tip pen is not available for the tiny windows, a sharpened white pencil point works just as precisely.

You Will Need

• muted pastel pencils for the houses
• fine black pen for roof and door lines
• yellow pencil for glowing windows
• white gel pen for snow details

Palette: Soft Sage,Dusty Blue,Warm Cream,Glow Yellow

Dust a little white pencil snow across the rooftops of the whole village, it ties the separate little houses together as one cohesive scene.

Focus this one entirely on the quiet details rather than any figure, since an empty window seat tells its own cozy story. Draw a simple cushioned bench or seat beneath the window, then pile two or three pillows of different shapes and patterns against the back, a striped one, a plain knit one, a plaid one.

Place a single steaming mug on the seat or a small side table nearby, with two or three soft curved lines rising from the rim to suggest warmth. The pillows are the place to loosen up texture wise, scribble a plaid pattern loosely rather than drawing each line perfectly straight, and let the knit pillow’s texture be suggested with short dashes rather than full detail.

Color the pillows in warm coordinating tones, rust, cream, deep green, against the cooler blue of the window glass and falling snow beyond it. The usual mistake is making the scene feel empty without a figure, but a worn blanket draped over one corner of the seat fills that gap easily.

Swap the mug for a stack of books if a drink feels like one prop too many. The still life drawing ideas page has more tips on arranging small objects like this together.

You Will Need

• warm tone pencils for pillows
• brown pencil for the mug
• white pencil for steam lines
• blue pencils for the window and snow

Palette: Rust Red,Warm Cream,Deep Green,Frost Blue

Add a small cat curled at one end of the window seat if the composition feels too empty, it fills the space without adding much extra drawing time.

Display three or four rings on small velvet stands or a simple tiered display, each ring a thin circle shape with a small gem drawn as a tiny faceted diamond shape on top. Keep the stands simple cylindrical shapes so they do not compete with the rings themselves.

The sparkle is the whole point of this window, so after the rings are fully colored, add small white gel pen star bursts, a few crossed lines radiating from each gem’s center, to suggest light catching the facets. Keep the sparkle marks few and well placed rather than scattering them everywhere, two or three per gem is plenty.

Color the gems in pale blues, pinks or clear white with grey shading beneath for depth, set against a deep velvet backdrop in burgundy or navy that makes the pale sparkle pop. The common mistake is overdoing the sparkle until it looks messy, so restrain yourself to a few clean star bursts per stone.

If gel pen feels too bold, a sharp white colored pencil gives a softer, more delicate sparkle instead.

You Will Need

• grey and white pencils for the gems
• gold pencil for ring bands
• white gel pen for sparkle bursts
• dark pencil for the velvet backdrop

Palette: Pale Diamond White,Soft Blue Gem,Antique Gold,Velvet Burgundy

Try adding a single larger statement ring in the center of the display at a slight angle, it gives the eye an obvious place to rest first.

An attic window sits differently than a shop front, often small and round or arched, tucked under a sloped roofline, so sketch that roof angle first before placing the window itself within it. A single small lantern on the windowsill, a simple square base with a curved handle and a flame glowing inside, becomes the one warm point in an otherwise quiet, cool scene.

Build the night sky outside heavily in deep blues and soft purples, with small white dots or gentle pencil flecks for falling snow, since this window looks out rather than in, a shift from most other ideas on this list. Let the lantern’s glow be the only warm color anywhere in the piece, which makes it read as a quiet, solitary scene rather than a bustling one.

The usual mistake is adding too much detail to the attic interior, so keep it simple, a wooden sill, the lantern, maybe one small object like a stack of books beside it.

If deep blue pencil looks flat for the night sky, layer a thin purple pencil underneath first for more depth and richness.

You Will Need

• deep blue and purple pencils for the sky
• yellow and orange pencils for the lantern flame
• brown pencil for the wooden sill
• white gel pen for snow

Palette: Midnight Blue,Deep Plum,Lantern Flame Yellow,Weathered Wood Brown

Keep every other light in the sky dim or absent so the single lantern flame stays the only warm note in the whole piece, that restraint is what makes it feel quiet.

Seat the grandmother in a comfortable chair pulled close to the window, knitting needles in hand, a half finished scarf or sweater draped across her lap in soft looping strokes. Keep her pose relaxed, shoulders slightly rounded, head tilted down toward her work, rather than upright and formal.

A warm lamp beside her chair becomes the main light source, so build the glow outward from the lampshade in soft yellow layers, brightest near the bulb and fading gently as it reaches the edges of the window behind her. That warm pool of light against the cool blue window glass is really the heart of this whole piece, so spend the extra time blending those two temperatures smoothly where they meet.

Color her cardigan or shawl in a soft warm tone, rust, mustard or dusty rose, and let the yarn in her lap pick up a complementary color for a little extra interest. The common mistake is making the knitting needles too stiff and straight, so angle them naturally crossing near her hands.

If a full figure feels like a lot, simplify to her hands, the needles and yarn, and the lamp glow alone.

You Will Need

• warm tone pencils for her cardigan
• yellow pencil for the lamp glow
• grey pencil for her hair
• blue pencils for the window behind her

Palette: Dusty Rose,Mustard Yellow,Soft Grey,Cool Window Blue

Try this same cozy lamp glow idea again with a different quiet activity, someone reading or wrapping a small gift works just as well with the same warm light setup.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever window caught your eye first, tape a sheet of smooth paper to your table, and sketch the frame lightly before anything else. Once that shape feels right, the glow, the frost and the little story inside will come together faster than you expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paper works best for a christmas window drawing in colored pencil?

Smooth, heavyweight white drawing paper works best, since it lets colored pencil layer smoothly for soft frosty blends without the tooth of rougher paper breaking up fine details like icing lines or sparkle marks.

How do you make frosted glass look realistic in colored pencil?

Layer light blue and white pencil in soft circular strokes, heaviest at the window’s edges and corners, then use a kneaded eraser to lift a few clear streaks where warm interior light should show through strongest.

What colors make a window glow look warm against a cold night?

Warm yellows, golds and soft oranges read as glowing light, especially when placed directly against cool blues, navys or soft greys for the night sky, since that contrast is what sells the warmth.

Do I need to draw people’s faces in detail for these window scenes?

No, simple shapes work better for most figures here, since soft silhouettes or loosely suggested faces keep the warm glowing window as the real focus rather than pulling attention to facial detail.

How long does one christmas window drawing usually take?

Most of these ideas finish in thirty to sixty minutes once the frame and main shapes are sketched, though a few, like detailed storefront displays with several figures, may take a little longer to color fully.
