A chameleon drawing gives you every excuse to grab the whole marker set and let the colors run wild, because this lizard is built for exactly that kind of show. Curled tails, swiveling eyes, crests and long tongues all give you a reason to draw something lively rather than another animal just sitting still.
Below are 29 small scenes, from a sleepy lizard on a twig to a panther chameleon lit up in rainbow stripes. Each one works as a single sitting project: a fineliner outline first, then alcohol marker color blended wet into wet, so pick whichever branch or flower catches your eye and start there.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start with the branch, drawn as one gentle diagonal curve across the page, because everything else wraps around it. Sketch the chameleon’s body as a simple oval sitting on top, then spiral the tail around the branch in a loose coil that tapers to a point.
Outline the whole thing in fineliner before any color touches the paper. Fill the body with a base green marker, then drop a second, brighter green or teal along the spine while the first layer is still damp so the two blend without a hard line.
The tail coil is where beginners rush and lose the shape, so draw it slowly in short pencil marks first, checking that each loop gets a little smaller than the last. If your fineliner skips on marker paper, switch to a felt tip pen instead, it glides better over the slightly textured surface.
Finish with one bold tip: leave a thin sliver of white paper between the tail and the branch at the overlap, it reads instantly as depth.
Palette: Leaf Green,Teal,Olive,Warm Brown
Catching a fly means the whole drawing centers on one dramatic diagonal, the tongue stretched taut from mouth to insect. Pencil in the chameleon first with its body braced and eyes forward, then add the tongue as a single thin line shooting out toward a tiny fly shape.
Ink the body and tongue in fineliner, keeping the tongue line perfectly straight so it reads as fast motion rather than a loose squiggle. Color the body in your rainbow greens, then pick one hot coral or pink for the tongue tip to make it pop against all that green.
Proportion is the trap here: a real chameleon’s tongue can stretch longer than its own body, so measure against the body length with your pencil before committing in ink, otherwise it looks too short to be exciting.
One today tip: keep the fly tiny, no bigger than the chameleon’s eye, so the tongue’s length does all the storytelling.
Palette: Spring Green,Coral Pink,Charcoal,Soft Yellow
Follow the fly catcher with something calmer: a chameleon mid color change, half green and half pink, perched on a wide-open hibiscus bloom. Draw the flower first as five or six overlapping petal shapes with a long stamen poking out the center, then seat the chameleon’s feet gripping the petal edge.
Ink everything, then color the flower in warm coral and pink before touching the lizard, so you can match its pink patches to the petals. Blend the chameleon’s body so one side stays green and the other side shifts into pink, using a cotton-tip blender or a colorless marker blender right where the two colors meet.
This is where eye level and light matter: put the light source coming from one side so the green side sits in shadow and the pink side catches the brightest marker layer, it sells the idea of change far better than even color all over.
Quick tip: use a lighter pink for the first layer on the body, then a hotter coral only in small patches, real color change never looks even.
Palette: Hibiscus Pink,Coral,Leaf Green,Sunny Yellow
Scale down for this one: a baby chameleon small enough to balance on a single fingertip, which means most of the page is actually the hand. Draw the finger first as a simple rounded shape entering from the bottom edge of the page, then perch the tiny chameleon’s feet gripping the fingernail edge.
Keep the baby’s proportions different from an adult: bigger eye relative to the head, shorter tail, stubbier legs, it reads as young immediately. Ink the hand lightly so it does not compete with the lizard, then bring the color only onto the chameleon in soft mint and lime greens.
Beginners often draw the finger too thin, so compare its width to the chameleon’s whole body before inking, a finger should look sturdy enough to actually hold the weight.
If you want a faster version, skip the hand entirely and show just the fingertip as a rounded shape, ten minutes is plenty for the lizard alone.
Palette: Mint Green,Lime,Skin Tone,Charcoal
This one leans entirely on the chameleon’s strangest trick, those eyes that swivel independently, so put the whole lizard front and center with no branch or prop to distract. Draw the head large and the two eye turrets as rounded cones, one pointing forward and one angled off to the side.
Ink the eyes last and carefully, a tiny pupil dot placed off-center in each eye turret is what sells the two-directions idea, so keep the dots small and deliberate. Color the body in a calm teal or green, saving your boldest contrast color for the thin ring around each eye.
Getting the eyes convincing is mostly about the pupil placement, so sketch several tiny eye turrets off to the side of your page first, testing pupil position before you commit on the real drawing.
One tip for today: make the two eyes slightly different in color intensity, it reinforces that each one is doing its own thing.
Palette: Teal,Burnt Orange,Soft Green,Charcoal
Look at photos of real chameleon eye turrets before drawing, the cone shape and the small round opening are easy to get wrong from memory.
Here the trick is restraint: a chameleon so close in color to its leaf that only the outline gives it away. Draw one large tropical leaf filling most of the page, with the chameleon’s body shape overlapping its edge so part of the lizard sits on the leaf and part extends past it.
Ink both leaf and lizard in the same thin line weight so neither one jumps out, then color them in nearly matching greens, perhaps one shade cooler for the chameleon and one shade warmer for the leaf. Save your palest highlight marker for the leaf veins and a thin line along the chameleon’s back, that is what keeps the two readable as separate shapes.
The spot people lose this one is the edge between lizard and leaf, so leave a hairline of white paper unmarked right along that boundary, it does more than any outline to separate them.
Try it again later with a yellow-green leaf and an orange-tinted chameleon for a totally different, trickier version of the same idea.
Palette: Leaf Green,Cool Green,Pale Green,Charcoal
Turn up the volume after that quiet leaf scene with a panther chameleon, the species famous for wearing turquoise, red and lime all at once. Draw the body in a confident S-curve along a sturdy branch, keeping the head large with that signature crest ridge running down its spine.
Ink the whole lizard, then map out loose vertical stripe bands in pencil before any marker touches the paper, this keeps the rainbow organized instead of muddy. Color each stripe band separately, letting turquoise, coral, lime and a touch of violet sit side by side, blending only at the stripe edges so the colors stay distinct and bold.
If the stripes smear into one blurry color, you likely worked too fast while the ink was still wet, so let each stripe dry for a few seconds before starting its neighbor, or switch to a water-based brush marker which forgives this better.
For a quicker version, limit yourself to three stripe colors instead of five, it still reads as a panther chameleon in under ten minutes.
Palette: Turquoise,Coral Red,Lime,Violet
Give the lizard a bit of everyday life by perching a chameleon on the rim of a terracotta flower pot, tail dangling down the clay side. Draw the pot first as a simple trapezoid shape with a flower or two poking up behind it, then set the chameleon gripping the rim with its tail curling against the pot’s curve.
Ink the pot with a slightly heavier line than the lizard so it reads as solid and separate, then color it in warm terracotta orange while the chameleon stays in cool greens, the color contrast keeps both subjects clear. Shade the underside of the pot’s curve a touch darker to give it roundness.
Beginners often draw the pot too narrow for the chameleon sitting on it, so check the rim width against the lizard’s foot span before inking, a pot needs to look wide enough to actually hold a plant.
No terracotta marker on hand works fine too, layer orange and a touch of brown together for the same warm clay tone.
Palette: Terracotta,Burnt Sienna,Leaf Green,Soft Pink
For a playful one, give your chameleon a tiny party hat, the kind of detail that makes a whole drawing feel like a greeting card. Draw the lizard’s head and body first in your usual pose on a branch, then add a small cone shape tilted on top of its head, with a thin strap line curving under its chin.
Ink the hat with the same confidence as the body, then color it in a color the lizard is not wearing anywhere else, a bright coral or yellow against green skin stands out best. A tiny dot pattern or a thin stripe on the hat, added last in a contrasting marker, finishes it off without extra fuss.
The hat tends to slide off looking flat if you skip its underside shadow, so add one thin darker line where the hat meets the head, it instantly sits on the lizard rather than floating above it.
Try swapping the party hat for a tiny leaf hat or a flower bud hat next time, same trick, different prop.
Palette: Coral,Sunny Yellow,Leaf Green,White
Move the lizard indoors for this one: a chameleon lounging on a striped picnic blanket, caught mid color change to match the pattern underneath. Draw the blanket first as a simple rectangle filling the lower half of the page with even stripes, then place the chameleon lying flat across it, belly down.
Ink the stripes with a ruler if your hand wavers, straight lines read as fabric far better than wobbly ones. Color the blanket stripes in two alternating colors, then pick up those same two colors in soft patches across the chameleon’s back, as if it is actually absorbing the pattern.
This only works if the blanket stripes and the lizard’s patches line up loosely, so pencil both in lightly first and check the alignment before any ink goes down.
One tip: leave the chameleon’s legs and tail in plain green, confining the pattern match to the back keeps the trick readable instead of chaotic.
Palette: Coral,Mustard,Leaf Green,Cream
After the blanket scene, go bold with the veiled chameleon, instantly recognizable by the tall fin-like crest rising off the top of its head. Draw the head shape first with that crest as a separate curved triangle rising straight up, then build the body below it on a thick branch.
Ink the crest edge with small scalloped bumps rather than one smooth line, that texture is what makes it read as a crest and not just a fin. Color the crest a shade or two brighter than the body, often a lime or yellow-green against a deeper forest green body, so it catches the eye first.
If the crest looks flat, measure its height against the head, a veiled chameleon’s crest can stand nearly as tall as the head itself, which surprises most people drawing it from memory.
Keep a reference photo handy for this one, the crest shape is distinctive enough that guessing tends to flatten it into a plain fin.
Palette: Forest Green,Lime,Olive,Warm Brown
Search reference photos of veiled chameleons before starting, the casque shape on top of the head is easy to flatten out if you draw it from memory alone.
Bamboo gives you clean, graphic lines to play against the lizard’s curves, so draw two or three tall bamboo stalks first, straight with small node rings marked every few inches. Place the chameleon gripping one stalk sideways, feet wrapped around in a way that shows off its opposable, mitten-like toes.
Ink the bamboo with a ruler for the straight lengths, then freehand only the little leaves sprouting near the nodes. Color the bamboo in cool green and pale yellow-green bands, then make the chameleon a warmer, slightly different green so it stands apart from its background rather than vanishing into it.
The feet are the detail that makes or breaks this one, draw each foot as two small claw clusters gripping opposite sides of the stalk, rather than one blobby shape, it is what actually shows the climbing grip.
Quick version: one bamboo stalk and no leaves gets you a clean ten-minute piece, add two more stalks and background leaves for the fuller forty-minute version.
Palette: Bamboo Green,Pale Yellow Green,Warm Green,Charcoal
Pair the lizard with a surprising habitat: a chameleon balanced carefully on a blooming cactus, feet avoiding the spines. Draw the cactus pad first as a rounded paddle shape covered in small dot clusters for spines, then add one large flower blooming from its top edge, petals layered like a rose.
Ink the spines as tiny short lines radiating from each dot rather than solid marks, it keeps them looking sharp but not overwhelming. Color the cactus in cool green with the flower in hot pink or magenta, a strong contrast that makes the bloom the first thing the eye catches before it travels to the lizard.
Watch the chameleon’s feet placement here, they need to grip the flower’s base or a spine-free edge of the pad, otherwise the whole scene reads as uncomfortable rather than charming.
If magenta markers are not in your set, layer hot pink over a touch of purple for a similarly rich cactus bloom color.
Palette: Cactus Green,Magenta,Hot Pink,Pale Yellow
Bring the lizard indoors again with something a reader will enjoy: a chameleon perched on top of a small stack of books, tail hanging off the side. Draw three or four books first, stacked slightly offset from each other, varying their colors and spine widths so the stack feels real rather than uniform.
Ink the book edges with straight lines using a ruler, then add the chameleon sitting comfortably on top, one foot curled over the topmost book’s edge. Color each book a different flat color, saving your green and turquoise markers for the lizard so it still stands out against the busier stack below it.
If the stack looks like it is sliding, check that each book’s bottom edge lines up level with a loose horizontal guideline before inking, a wobbly stack reads as a mistake rather than a style choice.
For a cozy reading-nook feel, this one works nicely alongside a sketchbook page of everyday objects if you want to build out a themed spread.
Palette: Mustard,Dusty Blue,Coral,Leaf Green
Shift the mood here to something quieter: a chameleon sheltering under a large leaf while thin rain lines fall around it. Draw the leaf first, angled like an umbrella over the lizard’s head, then place the chameleon crouched beneath it with its feet gripping a thin branch.
Ink the rain as short, consistent diagonal lines across the whole background, all slanting the same direction so they read as falling rather than scattered scribbles. Color the leaf in a slightly darker, wetter green than usual, with a few white gel pen dots for raindrops caught on its surface, and keep the chameleon in cooler, muted greens to match the overcast mood.
Rain lines are easy to overdo, so space them loosely and vary their length slightly, packing them too tight flattens the whole drawing into gray noise.
A white gel pen is worth keeping nearby for this one, those raindrop highlights on the leaf do more for the wet feeling than any marker color can.
You Will Need
- white gel pen for raindrop highlights
Palette: Deep Green,Slate Grey,Muted Teal,White
Set the lizard somewhere unexpectedly bright: draped over a bunch of ripe bananas, its green body curving against the yellow curves beneath it. Draw the banana bunch first as four or five overlapping curved shapes fanning from a single stem point, then lay the chameleon across the top, tail trailing down between two bananas.
Ink the bananas with the ribs and tip marks that make them read instantly as fruit, then color them in warm yellow with a few small brown speckle marks for ripeness. Keep the chameleon in cool green so the warm and cool colors contrast clearly, which is really the whole appeal of this one.
The spot this goes wrong is banana spacing, too many crammed together loses the bunch shape, so sketch them loosely first with visible gaps before tightening the final lines.
Try the same setup with a bowl of mixed tropical fruit next time for a busier, more layered version of the idea.
Palette: Banana Yellow,Warm Brown,Leaf Green,Teal
For a bit of character, draw two chameleons meeting on the same branch, noses nearly touching, each one a different color to tell them apart. Sketch the branch running horizontally across the page first, then place one chameleon on each side facing inward, bodies mirrored but not identical.
Ink both lizards the same way so they feel like a matched pair rather than mismatched styles, then color one in your greens and turquoises and the other in corals and warm oranges, keeping their color families completely separate. A shared branch color ties the whole scene together.
Symmetry is the trick to watch here, hold your pencil up to measure that both chameleons are roughly the same size and sit at the same height on the branch, otherwise one looks like it is sneaking up on the other instead of greeting it.
One tip: angle their eyes toward each other specifically, that small detail is what reads as a face-to-face moment rather than two lizards that happen to be nearby.
Palette: Teal Green,Turquoise,Coral,Warm Orange
Give this one a wink at the whole exercise: a chameleon standing on an artist’s paint palette, its body splashed with the same colors sitting in the wells around it. Draw the palette first as a rounded kidney shape with a thumb hole, then add five or six small color wells around its edge.
Ink the palette and the lizard together, then color each paint well a different bright hue, saving those exact colors for patches across the chameleon’s body as if it just stepped through wet paint. Blend each patch softly into the next so the body still reads as one lizard rather than a patchwork.
Beginners sometimes make the palette wells all the same size, so vary them slightly and let a couple of colors look nearly used up, it sells the idea of a working palette rather than a decorative prop.
If you enjoy this kind of playful color mixing, the ideas in a marker drawing roundup lean into the same flat, clean color approach.
Palette: Turquoise,Magenta,Sunny Yellow,Leaf Green
Build some motion into this one: a chameleon stretching one front leg up toward a butterfly hovering just out of reach. Draw the chameleon’s body first braced low on a branch, then angle one front leg up and forward, fingers spread, reaching toward a butterfly placed slightly above and to the side.
Ink the butterfly’s wings with a simple symmetrical shape, then color it in a bold contrasting color so it clearly reads as the thing being reached for, not just a background detail. Keep the chameleon’s body in its usual greens, but let the reaching foot and the eye both point toward the butterfly to guide the viewer’s eye the same way.
If the reach looks stiff, check the angle of the whole body leaning slightly in that direction too, a reach that only happens in the arm looks unnatural compared to one where the whole pose commits to it.
Those who enjoy pairing a butterfly drawing with another subject will find this combination especially satisfying to finish.
Palette: Leaf Green,Turquoise,Bright Orange,Deep Purple
Slow things right down with a sleepy chameleon, eyes half closed, body slack and settled on a thin twig. Draw the twig first as a simple diagonal line with a couple of small leaf buds, then build the chameleon’s body in a relaxed curve that sags slightly rather than gripping tight.
Ink the eye with a drooping lid line rather than a full round shape, that single detail communicates sleepy better than anything else in the drawing. Color the body in soft, slightly desaturated greens, muted rather than bright, since a resting chameleon’s color tends to be calmer than an active one.
The quick ten-minute version skips the twig detail entirely and just shows the curled, resting body on a plain branch line, while the fuller version adds a soft gradient background wash behind it for an evening feel.
One tip: round off every edge on this one, sharp angles anywhere in the pose will fight against the sleepy mood you are going for.
Palette: Sage Green,Muted Teal,Soft Brown,Pale Yellow
Add some whimsy with a chameleon perched on a small vine swing, the kind looped between two unseen branches. Draw the swing first as a simple U-shaped vine with leaf sprigs along its length, then seat the chameleon in the curve of the U, tail wrapped around one side of the vine for balance.
Ink the vine with small twisting texture lines so it reads as rope-like rather than a plain stick, then color it in a deeper green than the chameleon so the two do not blend into each other. A couple of small leaves hanging off the vine ends finish the sense of it swinging freely in the air.
Getting the swing to feel like it is actually swinging means tilting the whole U-shape slightly off level, a perfectly horizontal swing reads as still rather than mid-motion.
Try varying this next time with a hammock shape instead of a swing, same gentle curve, different prop entirely.
Palette: Vine Green,Leaf Green,Teal,Soft Yellow
Expand the banana idea into a fuller still life: a chameleon perched on the rim of a bowl piled with mixed tropical fruit, mango, pineapple and a few small limes. Draw the bowl first as a wide curved shape, then fill it with three or four overlapping fruit silhouettes before placing the chameleon gripping the rim above them.
Ink each fruit with its own distinct texture marks, diamond crosshatching for the pineapple, smooth curves for the mango, so they stay identifiable even before color goes on. Color the fruit in warm oranges, yellows and a touch of lime green, then keep the chameleon in cooler turquoise or teal so it reads clearly against all that warm fruit.
This scene gets crowded fast, so block in the fruit shapes loosely first and leave visible gaps between them, packing them edge to edge makes the bowl read as a jumble rather than a pleasing pile.
If pineapple texture feels fussy, a plain mango and a few limes alone still make a convincing tropical bowl in less time.
Palette: Mango Orange,Pineapple Yellow,Lime Green,Teal
Push the chameleon’s tail into the star of the show by curling the whole animal into a tight spiral, nose tucked near the center of its own coiled tail. Draw a light spiral guideline first with pencil, then lay the chameleon’s body along that path from the outer end inward, tapering the tail to a fine point at the center.
Ink along the spiral path, keeping the line weight even from thick body to thin tail tip. Color the whole spiral in a single smooth gradient, starting bright green at the head and shifting toward blue or turquoise by the time you reach the tail’s center, one continuous blend rather than separate color blocks.
The spiral falls apart if the gaps between coils are uneven, so measure the spacing with your pencil guideline before inking, consistent gaps are what make it read as a tidy coil rather than a tangle.
One tip for today: leave a small gap of white paper between each loop of the spiral, it keeps the coils distinct even under heavy color.
Palette: Leaf Green,Teal,Deep Blue,White
Bring a person into the scene with a chameleon perched calmly on a girl’s shoulder, tail curling down her arm. Draw the shoulder and upper arm first as a simple rounded shape entering the frame, keep the face and hair loose and only loosely detailed since the lizard is the real subject, then seat the chameleon gripping the shoulder’s curve.
Ink the hair in a few confident flowing lines rather than many small strokes, it keeps the focus on the chameleon’s texture and color. Color the chameleon fully, then use just one or two flat colors for the shirt and hair so nothing competes with the lizard’s rainbow.
Proportion matters most here: hold your pencil up to compare the chameleon’s body length against the width of the shoulder it sits on, a chameleon drawn too large looks like a dragon rather than a pet-sized lizard.
If figures feel tricky, practicing a simple pose first from a girl pencil drawing guide can make the shoulder and hair shapes easier to commit to.
Palette: Leaf Green,Turquoise,Skin Tone,Soft Brown
Return to the flowers with something more exotic than the hibiscus: a chameleon balanced on a dramatic jungle orchid, its petals spotted and curled. Draw the orchid first with its distinctive wide lower lip petal and two narrower petals above, then add the chameleon gripping the stem just below the bloom.
Ink the orchid’s petal edges with gentle waves rather than straight lines, orchids rarely have flat edges. Color the petals in soft purple or white with small dot or speckle patterns added last in a darker marker, then keep the chameleon in rich greens so it reads as a visitor rather than part of the plant.
The orchid’s shape is unlike most garden flowers, so if the petals look too simple or flower-like in a generic way, add that spotted texture and the curled petal edges back in, those two details are what make it read specifically as orchid rather than any flower.
No purple marker on hand works fine, a pale lilac or even soft pink makes an equally convincing orchid.
Palette: Orchid Purple,White,Leaf Green,Deep Purple
Shrink the scale again with a chameleon perched delicately on the handle of a teacup, tail curled through the loop. Draw the teacup first as a simple rounded shape with a thin handle loop, then thread the chameleon’s tail through that loop before letting its body rest along the cup’s rim.
Ink the teacup with a thin, even line and perhaps a simple decorative pattern around the rim, then color the cup in a soft pastel so it sits quietly behind the chameleon’s bolder color. The tail looping through the handle is the detail to get right: draw it going behind the handle on one side and in front on the other so it reads as truly threaded through rather than just resting beside it.
This one is easy to oversize, so compare the chameleon’s whole body length against the teacup’s height before inking, the lizard should look dainty enough to belong on a handle rather than tip the cup over.
A touch of steam rising from the cup in a few curved white gel pen lines adds a cozy finishing detail if you want it.
You Will Need
- white gel pen for steam lines
Palette: Pastel Blue,Leaf Green,Soft Pink,White
Play a little hide and seek: a chameleon with just its head and one curious eye peeking out from behind a large leaf, the rest of its body hidden. Draw the leaf first, filling most of the page, then add the chameleon’s head emerging from one edge, eye wide and alert.
Ink the visible part of the chameleon fully, but let the leaf’s edge genuinely overlap and hide the rest of the body rather than drawing it faintly underneath. Color the leaf in a rich, slightly darker green than the chameleon’s face, so the peeking head stands forward clearly against it.
This idea lives or dies on that one visible eye, so spend extra care there, a bright catchlight dot left as pure white paper or added in white gel pen makes the eye feel alert and present even though the rest of the animal stays hidden.
For a quicker take, just the eye and the very top of the head peeking over the leaf’s edge is enough, saving real time over drawing a fuller face.
Palette: Deep Green,Leaf Green,Turquoise,White
Put the lizard back in a garden setting, balanced along the long spout of a watering can as if about to get a surprise shower. Draw the watering can first as a simple rounded body with a long curved spout extending to one side, then lay the chameleon’s body along the spout’s length, feet gripping its curve.
Ink the can with clean, slightly heavier lines than the lizard so the metal reads as solid, then color it in a soft galvanized grey or a cheerful painted color like dusty blue. A few small water droplets falling from the spout’s tip, drawn as simple teardrop shapes, finish the scene without much extra work.
The spout’s curve is the trickiest line in this one, so practice it a few times on scrap paper first, a spout that wobbles reads as broken rather than gracefully curved.
If you enjoy small garden-object scenes like this, a pear drawing collection leans into the same kind of everyday object charm.
Palette: Dusty Blue,Grey,Leaf Green,White
Close the set on a soft note: a chameleon mid color change, shifting from green toward a gentle lilac to match the lavender stem it rests on. Draw a single tall lavender stem first, with small clustered buds running up most of its length, then wrap the chameleon’s tail around the stem partway up, body resting along its length.
Ink the lavender buds as small, simple oval clusters rather than individually detailed flowers, repeated shapes read as lavender without needing fussy detail on each one. Color the buds in soft purple, then blend the chameleon from green at the tail up toward a matching lilac near its head, the same soft blending technique used for the hibiscus idea earlier in this list.
Keep the lilac muted rather than bright, true lavender color leans grey-purple rather than hot pink-purple, and that muted choice is what ties the whole piece together.
One tip: finish with a few loose dot marks of pale yellow near the lavender buds, it suggests pollen and adds warmth against all that cool purple and green.
Palette: Lilac,Lavender Purple,Leaf Green,Pale Yellow
What to Do Next
Pick whichever chameleon caught your eye first, that curiosity is usually the best sign of which one you will actually finish. Grab a sheet of marker paper, start with light pencil shapes, and let the fineliner and color do the rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the easiest way to start a chameleon drawing?
Start with a simple oval body and a curved tail on a plain branch line. Keep the pose calm before attempting tricky details like the swiveling eyes or a dramatic tongue catch.
What markers work best for a chameleon’s color changing look?
Alcohol-based markers blend most smoothly for gradients across a chameleon’s body. Work fast while the first color is still wet, and keep two or three greens plus one bright accent color on hand.
How do you make chameleon skin texture look realistic with markers?
Build it in layers rather than one flat color pass. A base tone first, then a second shade blended wet into wet along the body’s curves, gives the bumpy, scaled look without needing fine linework.
Why does my chameleon drawing look flat or stiff?
Flat results usually come from an even, unbroken outline and one single marker color across the whole body. Vary your line weight and blend at least two shades together to add roundness and life.
Can beginners draw a chameleon without a reference photo?
Simple poses like a sleepy chameleon on a twig work fine from memory, but anything involving the crest, eye turrets or tongue benefits hugely from a quick reference photo check first.
