31 Posca Art Ideas for Bold Flat Color on Light and Kraft Paper

26

Posca art turns a plain sheet of paper into something that looks like it belongs in a gallery window, and it does it fast. There is no waiting for layers to dry, no muddy color, just opaque paint marker going down exactly where you put it, edge to edge, flat and bright and finished almost before you know it.

Below are thirty one subjects built for that look: tulips, cats, citrus, cars, jellyfish and more, every one sized to fill the page and finished in a single sitting. Pick whichever one catches your eye first and grab your markers.

Start with a vase of tulips because flat petal shapes are the whole point of Posca work: no shading, just color meeting color. Sketch a simple vase shape low on the page in pencil, then build three or four tulip heads above it as closed almond shapes, each one a single petal block.

Lay a stem and vase outline first in black fineliner so you know your borders, then fill each petal with one marker color at a time, cobalt for one flower, tomato red for the next, leaving a thin paper gap between petals so colors stay crisp rather than bleeding together.

If a petal edge goes wobbly, let the outline marker go over it last and square it up rather than trying to fix the fill itself. Compare the width of the vase to the height of the tulip heads before you commit to ink, since a vase drawn too narrow makes the whole bouquet look top heavy.

Swap plain white paper for kraft paper here and the green stems pop even harder against the warm tan. Today’s tip: mix only three flower colors so the bouquet reads as one bold statement, not a rainbow.

Move from flowers to a figure with a girl in a sun hat standing at the edge of the sea, her back turned to the viewer so you never have to wrestle with a face. Block in her silhouette first: a wide hat circle, a simple dress triangle, two bare legs, all in pencil before any marker touches the page.

Work largest shapes first, the sea as a flat cobalt band and the sand as a pale stripe, then add her dress in tomato red or pink once the background is dry, finishing with the black outline around her whole shape last so she sits crisply on top of the color beneath her.

If her proportions feel off, hold your pencil up and measure her head height against her total height: aim for roughly one head to five body lengths for a relaxed, stylized figure rather than a tiny head on a giant body.

No kraft paper on hand works fine here too, since white paper lets the cobalt sea read even bolder. Keep her hat brim wide and flat, it is the shape that makes the whole figure feel sunny.

Bring the eye down to the table with a bowl of lemons sitting on a checkered cloth, a subject that is really an excuse to practice flat pattern work. Draw the bowl as a simple curved container first, stack three or four lemon ovals inside it, then rule out a loose grid for the cloth underneath with pencil guidelines.

Fill the lemons in sunny yellow first since they are the star, add a thin green nub at the top of each one, then move to the cloth and alternate cobalt and white squares one at a time, letting the pencil grid keep every square roughly the same size.

Checkered patterns go crooked fast if you try to freehand every line, so keep the ruler or a straight edge handy for the cloth even though the lemons themselves stay loose and hand drawn.

If you want this in ten minutes, skip the full checker and paint the cloth as plain cobalt with a few white stripes instead. The forty minute version adds a full grid and a cast shadow in grey under the bowl.

You Will Need

• ruler or straight edge

Keep the cozy indoor mood going with a cat curled asleep on a striped rug, a shape that is really just one soft oval with ears and a tail tucked in. Pencil the cat first as a rounded comma shape, then lay the rug stripes underneath and around it before any color goes down.

Paint the rug stripes in alternating tomato red and cobalt first since they sit behind the cat, then fill the cat itself in one flat color, leaving the outline pen for whiskers, ear lines and the closed eye curve once everything else is dry.

Light for a sleeping cat is simple, just add one pale cream stripe along the top curve of its back to suggest a window glow, since a sleeping animal needs almost no shadow work to read as soft and warm.

If stripes feel fussy, a plain kraft background with no rug at all still works, just paint the cat alone, large, in the center of the page. One tip for today: keep the cat’s outline one single unbroken line so the curled pose stays calm rather than jagged.

Trade the living room for open horizon with a sunset over a desert road, a landscape built entirely from flat horizontal bands. Rule a faint pencil line for the horizon about a third up the page, then stack your sunset colors above it, sunny yellow near the horizon fading into tomato red and pink higher up.

Paint sky bands first since they cover the largest area, then add the road as a pale triangle narrowing toward the horizon, finishing with a cactus silhouette or two in flat black along one side to anchor the scene.

Eye level sits low here, right at the horizon line, which is what makes the sky feel huge and the road feel like it stretches on forever, so resist the urge to push the horizon up the page.

If you want this done quickly, three sky bands and a plain road is enough for ten minutes. Given more time, add a small sun circle low on the horizon and a second cactus further down the road for depth.

Jump into something more graphic with a disco ball reflecting stars, a shape built from one circle and a grid of tiny facets. Draw a large circle in pencil first, then divide it with a loose diamond grid, each small facet becoming its own flat color block once you start painting.

Fill facets in an alternating pattern of cobalt, pink and sunny yellow, working one color across the whole circle before switching to the next so the pattern stays even, then scatter small white star shapes and dots around the ball on the background.

Edges between facets are where this goes wrong, since a wobbly grid line reads as messy rather than sparkly, so keep your outline pen steady and go over every facet line last in one pass.

No white paper handy, kraft works beautifully here since the warm background makes the cobalt and pink facets glow even harder. Keep the star scatter loose and uneven around the ball, perfectly even dots look stiff rather than festive.

You Will Need

• white gel pen for star highlights

Palette: Cobalt Blue,Blush Pink,Sunny Yellow,White

Scale down to a tiny still life with a pair of cherries, a subject small enough to practice the Posca highlight trick that makes everything look glossy. Paint two overlapping circles in tomato red first, join them with a single curved green stem, then let the red dry completely before touching anything else.

The shine is the whole lesson here: once the red is dry, add one small white or pale yellow oval highlight near the top of each cherry, offset slightly so the two highlights do not mirror each other exactly, which is what sells the glossy roundness.

If the highlight smears into wet red underneath, that is the fix for next time, always let the base color sit a minute before adding any highlight on top of it.

Because this subject is so small, it works as a quick ten minute piece on its own, or scale it up and repeat the pair three or four times across the page for a bolder composition. Keep the stem thin and curved, a straight stem looks stiff next to round fruit.

Palette: Tomato Red,Leaf Green,White,Sunny Yellow

Try this highlight trick on other round fruit too, apples and grapes take the same glossy white dot beautifully.

Build out a small mushroom forest next, a scene made from a handful of dome shapes clustered at different heights across the page. Pencil in three or four mushroom caps first, varying their size so the composition does not feel like a row of identical shapes, then add thin stems beneath each one.

Paint the caps in alternating tomato red and cobalt, let them dry, then come back with a fine marker tip to stipple white dots across the red caps, the classic toadstool pattern that reads instantly even at a small scale.

Texture is the whole trick here, the dots need slightly uneven spacing to look natural rather than printed, so resist lining them up in neat rows and scatter them instead, denser near the center of the cap and thinner near the edge.

If you only have a fine black pen and no white marker, outline dots instead of filling them, it still reads as spotted from a short distance. Next time, try the same forest in cobalt and pink caps instead of red for a cooler palette.

You Will Need

• fine tip marker for dot detail

Palette: Tomato Red,Cobalt Blue,White,Leaf Green

Let the mushrooms lead into water with a koi pair circling each other, their bodies forming a loose yin and yang curve across the page. Sketch two long fish shapes nose to tail in pencil, overlapping slightly in the middle, before adding fins and a simple tail fan to each.

Paint one koi in tomato red with white patches and the other in plain cobalt, working the body color first and the fins last, since thin fin shapes are easier to clean up with the outline pen once the big areas are already flat and dry.

Getting two fish to circle convincingly is about the gap between them, keep the curve of each body echoing the other’s so they read as a pair moving together rather than two separate fish placed side by side.

Add a few loose cobalt ripple lines around them if you have time, or leave the background plain white for a quicker, bolder result. Swap the red koi for solid yellow next time for an entirely different mood.

Palette: Tomato Red,Cobalt Blue,White,Charcoal

Move from fish to a still life with a cocktail glass topped with an orange slice, a subject built almost entirely from clean geometric shapes. Draw the glass as a simple triangle or tulip shape in pencil, add a thin stem and base beneath it, then perch a half circle orange slice on the rim.

Fill the glass liquid first in tomato red or sunny yellow, leave a thin white line along the rim edge for shine, then paint the orange slice in bright orange or yellow with white pith lines radiating from the center once the base color is dry.

Glass shapes go wrong when the two sides are not symmetrical, so fold your sketch paper down the center line before committing to pencil, or at least measure the width at the rim against the width at the base to keep both sides even.

For a ten minute version, skip the orange slice and just paint the glass with a straw. The longer version adds a few small white bubble dots rising through the liquid and a tiny paper umbrella.

Palette: Tomato Red,Sunny Yellow,White,Cobalt Blue

Widen the still life into a fruit market crate stacked with oranges, lemons and a few leaves poking out the sides. Draw the crate as a simple wooden box shape first with a few plank lines across the front, then fill the top with overlapping fruit circles before adding any color.

Paint the crate itself in a warm flat brown or leave it as bare kraft paper showing through, then work the fruit in alternating sunny yellow and orange, largest circles in front and smaller ones peeking from behind to suggest depth without any real shading.

Overlap is the trick for the crowded look, every fruit circle should hide part of at least one neighbor, since fruit drawn with gaps between each piece looks sparse rather than market fresh.

Kraft paper is actually the better base here, since the crate wood can simply be the paper itself with a few outlined plank lines on top. Vary the fruit next time by swapping in a few green limes among the oranges and lemons.

Palette: Sunny Yellow,Orange,Leaf Green,Charcoal

Shift gears into a vintage car cruising a coastal road, a subject that rewards simple blocky shapes over any attempt at realistic detail. Pencil the car body as a rounded rectangle with two circle wheels, keep the windows as one simple trapezoid, then add the road and sea behind it afterward.

Paint the car body first in one bold color, tomato red or cobalt work equally well, add black for the tires and windows, then fill the background with a flat cobalt sea band and a pale road strip beneath the wheels.

A car this simplified only works if the proportions hold up, so check that the wheel circles sit at roughly one third the height of the whole car body before you paint, otherwise it reads as a toy rather than a vintage cruiser.

If you want extra texture, drybrush a thin white streak along the top edge of the car body for a sense of chrome shine. No cobalt on hand, a flat teal or green sea works just as well behind the car.

Palette: Tomato Red,Cobalt Blue,White,Charcoal

Step back indoors with a city window framed by potted plants on the sill, looking out over simple rooftop shapes beyond the glass. Draw the window frame first as a large rectangle divided into panes, then add two or three plant pots along the bottom edge before any color goes in.

Paint the sky visible through the glass in a flat cobalt or pink, add simple rooftop silhouettes in charcoal along the bottom of that view, then bring the plants to life in leaf green with a terracotta pot beneath each one.

Distance here is handled entirely through size and overlap rather than fade, so make the plant leaves large and the rooftops small and simple, which is what pushes the city back behind the glass convincingly.

If your frame lines wander, go over them last in black once every pane of color is dry and fully covers the pencil guide beneath. For a bolder version next time, swap the city view for a plain sunset band and keep the plants exactly the same.

Palette: Cobalt Blue,Leaf Green,Terracotta,Charcoal

Satisfy a sweeter craving with a strawberry cake slice, a wedge shape that is really three flat layers stacked on top of each other. Draw the slice as a simple triangle first, divide it with two horizontal lines for the layers, then top it with a dome of frosting and a single whole strawberry.

Paint the cake layers in alternating cream and pink, fill the frosting dome in white, then add the strawberry last in tomato red with tiny white dot seeds once the base color beneath it has dried completely.

Frosting drips are the one tricky edge here, use a slightly looser wrist for the drip line along the frosting’s lower edge so it reads as soft rather than ruled straight like the cake layers beneath it.

No pink marker handy, a pale cream layer alone still reads as cake, just lean harder on the red strawberry to carry the color. Keep this one bold by making the strawberry nearly as large as one whole cake layer.

Palette: Cream,Blush Pink,White,Tomato Red

Bring in something wilder with a tiger resting among leaves, its stripes giving you a chance to practice bold pattern on a curved form. Sketch the tiger’s head and shoulders large across the page first, simple rounded shapes rather than realistic anatomy, then surround it with a few broad leaf shapes in the corners.

Paint the tiger’s base coat in sunny yellow or orange first, let it dry fully, then add black stripes on top, following the curve of the face and body rather than painting them straight, since straight stripes flatten the whole form.

Light on a tiger’s face usually comes from above, so keep the muzzle and brow areas slightly paler by simply leaving more white or kraft paper showing through in those spots rather than mixing a lighter orange.

Leaves behind the tiger work best in a single flat green so they do not compete with the stripes. Simplify further next time by cropping in tight on just the eyes and nose for an even bolder close-up portrait.

Palette: Sunny Yellow,Orange,Charcoal,Leaf Green

Soften the mood with a rainbow arcing over rolling hills, a subject built from stacked curved bands and two simple hill shapes below. Pencil a large arc across the top half of the page first, divide it into five or six parallel stripes, then draw two overlapping hill curves beneath it.

Paint the rainbow stripes one color at a time, cobalt, pink, yellow and green in whatever order pleases you, working from the outer edge inward so each new stripe sits neatly against the one before it, then fill the hills in flat green once the arc above is dry.

Keeping every rainbow stripe the same width is the detail that makes or breaks this piece, so pencil in guideline arcs before touching any marker rather than trying to judge the spacing by eye as you paint.

For speed, three stripes and two hills is a complete ten minute piece. With more time, add a small sun peeking from behind one hill and a scatter of tiny flower dots across the green.

Palette: Cobalt Blue,Blush Pink,Sunny Yellow,Leaf Green

Head to the shoreline for a shell collection, a loose scatter of four or five shapes that lets you treat each one as its own tiny study. Draw a spiral shell, a fan shell and a long oval shell in pencil first, spacing them unevenly across the page so the collection feels gathered rather than arranged in a row.

Paint each shell in a single flat color, cobalt, pink and cream work well together, then add the pattern detail unique to each shape, ridges radiating out on the fan shell, a spiral line on the spiral shell, once the base color has dried.

Shells read as three dimensional mainly through their ridge lines, so keep those lines curving with the shell’s form rather than straight across it, which is the one adjustment that saves a flat looking shell.

If you only have one or two colors of marker, paint every shell the same color and let the varied shapes carry the interest instead. Group them tighter next time for a denser, busier composition.

Palette: Cobalt Blue,Blush Pink,Cream,Charcoal

Bring a cozy interior moment to the page with a teapot decorated in a flower pattern, sitting alone on the paper with nothing else around it. Draw the teapot body as one rounded shape with a curved spout and a looped handle, keeping the whole silhouette simple before adding any surface pattern.

Paint the teapot body in one flat base color first, let it dry, then add small flower shapes across the surface in a contrasting color, three or four petals each, scattered rather than lined up in neat rows.

Spouts and handles are thin shapes that smudge easily while the body is still wet, so always paint the large round body first and come back to the thin curved details once that base color has had time to set.

For more teapot guidance on handles, lids and spouts at a slower pace, the teapot drawing lessons walk through several shapes step by step. Swap the floral pattern for simple polka dots next time for a different personality entirely.

Palette: Cobalt Blue,Blush Pink,Sunny Yellow,White

Keep the houseplant mood going with a small cactus garden, three or four potted cacti of different shapes grouped together across the page. Pencil a round cactus, a tall column cactus and a paddle shaped one side by side, each sitting in its own simple pot shape along the bottom edge.

Paint each cactus in a slightly different green, sage, leaf and a deeper teal green work well as a trio, then add the pots in terracotta or cobalt once the plants themselves are dry, finishing with a few small white spike marks across each cactus.

Spikes are the detail that sells a cactus instantly, so keep them short and radiating outward in small clusters rather than one continuous fringe around the whole shape, which reads as fur rather than spines.

If pots feel fussy to paint individually, line all three up on one single shelf shape instead to save time. Add a tiny flower bud in pink on top of one cactus next time for a playful variation.

Palette: Sage Green,Leaf Green,Terracotta,White

Get back out onto the water with a sailboat riding a set of bold graphic waves, a scene built from triangles and simple curved bands. Draw the boat hull as a shallow curved triangle first, add a tall mast and a single triangular sail above it, then rule in two or three wave bands beneath the hull.

Paint the sail in white or cream so it stands out against a cobalt sky, fill the waves in alternating cobalt and white stripes beneath the hull, then finish the boat body itself in tomato red once the water pattern around it is fully dry.

Waves drawn too evenly look like a ruled pattern rather than water, so let each wave band curve slightly differently from its neighbor, some gentle, some with a sharper peak, to keep the sea feeling alive.

For a quick version, two wave bands and a plain sail is enough. Given more time, add a scatter of small white foam dots along the top of each wave crest and a seagull shape in the sky.

Palette: Cobalt Blue,White,Tomato Red,Sunny Yellow

Stay on the coast for a beach umbrella scene, a striped canopy over a simple strip of sand and sea behind it. Pencil the umbrella as a half circle dome on a thin pole, divide the dome into alternating pie slice segments, then add a flat sea band and a pale sand strip behind and beneath it.

Paint the umbrella segments one at a time, alternating tomato red and white or cobalt and yellow, keep the segments meeting at the very center point of the dome, then fill the sea and sand once the umbrella pattern is complete.

Segment lines that do not all meet at the same center point make the umbrella dome look lopsided, so mark that center point clearly in pencil first and use it as the anchor for every dividing line.

A beach chair or a pair of sandals tucked beside the umbrella’s base is a nice extra if you have time left, but the umbrella alone against flat sea and sand is a complete, bold piece on its own. Try the same umbrella in a cooler palette next time, cobalt and green instead of red and yellow.

Palette: Tomato Red,White,Cobalt Blue,Sand Beige

Return to flowers with a bouquet wrapped in patterned paper, cradled in a cone shape that takes up the bottom third of the page. Sketch the wrapping cone first as a simple triangle, then build a cluster of rounded flower heads and a few long leaves rising out of the top of it.

Paint the wrapping paper in a bold pattern, stripes or dots in cobalt and yellow, then work upward into the flower heads themselves in pink and red, finishing with green stems and leaves threaded between the blooms last.

A bouquet this full can tip over visually if every flower head is the same size, so vary two or three of them larger and tuck smaller buds between the big ones, the same kind of size comparison that keeps any cluster from looking like a grid.

If patterned wrapping feels like too much, plain kraft paper showing through as the cone itself, with just a ribbon line in one bold color, is just as striking. Keep the flower cluster asymmetrical, leaning slightly to one side reads more natural than dead center.

Palette: Cobalt Blue,Sunny Yellow,Blush Pink,Leaf Green

Bring in some tropical color with a parrot perched on a branch, its body built from a few large overlapping feather shapes rather than fine individual feathers. Draw the body as one rounded oval, add a curved beak and a long tail sweeping down below the branch, then sketch the branch itself as one simple diagonal line with a leaf or two.

Paint the body in blocks of color by feather zone, sunny yellow for the head, cobalt for the wing, tomato red for the tail, working top to bottom so each new color has a dry neighbor to butt up against cleanly.

The beak and eye are where a parrot either comes alive or goes flat, so save those for last in solid black and keep the eye a single small dot rather than trying to add a pupil highlight at this scale, simplicity reads better than detail here.

For a ten minute version, paint just the head and shoulders large on the page and skip the full tail. With more time, add a second parrot further along the branch in a different color combination.

Palette: Sunny Yellow,Cobalt Blue,Tomato Red,Leaf Green

Have a little fun with food in a pizza slice loaded with toppings, a wedge shape that works the same way as the cake slice but with a completely different palette. Draw the slice as a simple triangle with a slightly puffed crust edge along the back, then scatter circles for pepperoni and smaller irregular blobs for other toppings across the surface.

Paint the cheese base in a flat cream or pale yellow first, add tomato red pepperoni circles once that base is dry, then finish with small green dots for herbs or peppers scattered unevenly across the top.

Toppings placed in a perfect grid look printed rather than fresh from the oven, so scatter the pepperoni circles at slightly different sizes and let a few of them overlap the crust edge for a more casual, appetizing spread.

If you are short on colors, pepperoni and cheese alone still reads clearly as pizza, the green herb flecks are an easy extra once you have more markers. Draw the crust edge with a slightly bumpy line rather than perfectly smooth, that bumpiness is what makes it look baked.

Palette: Cream,Tomato Red,Leaf Green,Sunny Yellow

Pair citrus with the houseplant theme in a lemon tree growing in a pot, a compact shape of leaves and fruit that sits well in a tall vertical format. Pencil a round or dome shaped canopy first, add a simple pot beneath it, then scatter five or six lemon circles through the green canopy before any color goes down.

Paint the canopy in flat leaf green first, working around the pencil marks for the lemons so you leave clean white gaps, then fill each lemon in sunny yellow once the green is dry, finishing with the pot in terracotta or cobalt last.

Lemons that are all the exact same size look mechanical, so vary two or three slightly larger than the rest and let a couple sit near the very edge of the canopy outline rather than only in the center.

A fast version keeps the canopy as one plain green blob with just three lemons. For the longer version, add leaf vein lines in a darker green and a cast shadow beneath the pot.

Palette: Leaf Green,Sunny Yellow,Terracotta,White

Leave the earth entirely for a ringed planet floating among scattered stars, a subject that is really just two overlapping circles and a lot of empty space handled with confidence. Draw a large circle for the planet body, a flattened ellipse crossing through it for the ring, then scatter small star shapes and dots around the rest of the page.

Paint the planet body in cobalt or tomato red first, let it dry, then add the ring in a contrasting color passing both in front of and behind the planet by painting the back half first, the planet body second, and the front half of the ring last on top.

Working out which part of the ring sits in front of the planet and which sits behind is the whole trick to this subject, so pencil both halves clearly before you paint and keep track of the painting order rather than guessing as you go.

If a full painted ring feels tricky, a single thin outlined ring with no fill still reads clearly as Saturn. Scatter the background stars unevenly, denser in one corner than spread perfectly even, for a more natural night sky feel.

Palette: Cobalt Blue,Tomato Red,Sunny Yellow,White

Bring the mood indoors again with a cozy armchair corner, a chunky chair shape paired with a small side table and a reading lamp. Draw the armchair first as one rounded rectangle with two simple cushion lines, then add a small round table beside it topped with a cup and a stack of books.

Paint the chair in one bold flat color, tomato red or cobalt both work, add the table and lamp in a contrasting color once the chair is dry, then finish with small details like the cup and book spines in a third accent color last.

A chair this simplified can look flat without one soft gesture, so add a single curved line across the seat cushion in a slightly darker shade of the same color to suggest the dip where someone has been sitting, without any real shading elsewhere.

For more cozy interior inspiration in a different medium, the winter morning drawing ideas cover similar corners with a softer palette. Add a cat curled on the cushion next time for a warmer, more personal version.

Palette: Tomato Red,Cobalt Blue,Sunny Yellow,Charcoal

Treat the page itself as fabric with a tote bag design, flowers drawn directly across a simple bag silhouette as though the paper were the canvas surface. Draw the bag as one large trapezoid with two curved handles at the top, then scatter a loose arrangement of flower heads and leaves across the body of the bag before any color.

Paint the bag base in plain kraft or a flat neutral first if you want the canvas texture to show, then layer the flower pattern on top in cobalt, pink and yellow, working the largest blooms first and tucking smaller buds into the gaps between them.

A busy pattern across a flat bag shape can lose the bag’s own silhouette, so keep the handle lines and bag edge in bold black outline painted last, right over the top of the finished pattern, to pull the whole shape back into focus.

If the bag feels like too much surface to fill, paint just one large central flower motif instead of an all over scatter. Today’s tip: leave a narrow plain border just inside the bag’s outline so the busy pattern does not run right off the edge.

Palette: Cobalt Blue,Blush Pink,Sunny Yellow,Leaf Green

Keep things playful with a smiling sun over a field, a cheerful character shape paired with a simple landscape below it. Draw the sun as one large circle with triangular rays around the edge, give it a simple curved smile and two dot eyes, then sketch a flat field of rolling green beneath it.

Paint the sun body in sunny yellow first, add the face in black once that circle is dry, then fill the field below in flat green with a few small flower dots scattered across it in pink or red to echo the sun’s warmth.

Rays that are all identical length can look stiff, so vary a few slightly longer or shorter around the circle, and keep the smile a single confident curve rather than a fussy multi-line mouth, since a simple shape reads happier at a glance than a detailed one.

A quick version keeps the sun alone with no field at all, just the character filling the page. With more time, add a few small birds as simple checkmark shapes flying near the sun’s rays.

Palette: Sunny Yellow,Leaf Green,Blush Pink,Charcoal

Close the garden theme with a small butterfly garden, two or three butterflies of different wing shapes hovering above a low scatter of flowers. Sketch each butterfly as two paired teardrop wings on either side of a thin body, varying the wing shape slightly between each one, then add a few simple flower heads along the bottom edge of the page.

Paint each butterfly’s wings in one bold color with a contrasting pattern of dots or stripes added once the base wing color is dry, then fill the flowers beneath them in a different palette so the butterflies clearly read as the subject floating above the ground.

Keeping both wings on each butterfly a true mirror of each other is the detail that makes them look balanced rather than lopsided, so paint one wing, then flip your reference or simply eyeball the pencil guide on the opposite side before committing marker to the second wing.

For more butterfly pattern ideas across a different medium, the junk journal butterfly pages show a wide range of wing patterns worth borrowing from. Try metallic gel pen dots on the wings next time for extra sparkle.

Palette: Cobalt Blue,Tomato Red,Sunny Yellow,Blush Pink

End back in the water with a jellyfish in bold lines, a loose dome topped shape with long trailing tentacles that fill the lower half of the page. Draw the bell as one simple rounded dome first, then let four or five long wavy lines trail downward from its base, varying their length so the tentacles do not all end at the same point.

Paint the bell in a single bold color, pink or cobalt both suit the subject, then work down into the tentacles one at a time in a lighter or contrasting shade, keeping each line loose and slightly wobbly rather than perfectly straight.

Tentacles painted too stiff look like ribbon rather than something floating in water, so load the marker and let your wrist stay relaxed as you pull each line downward in one smooth stroke rather than several short, careful ones.

If a few tentacle lines wobble too much, go back over just that one line with the outline pen to steady it rather than repainting the whole shape. Try a pair of jellyfish next time, one large and one small, for a sense of them drifting together.

What to Do Next

Choose one idea, cut a sheet of white or kraft paper to a size you can finish today, and sketch the main shapes in pencil before a single marker comes out. Start with something small like the cherries or the shell collection if this is your first time with Posca, then work up to a full scene once the flat color blocking feels familiar.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paper works best for posca art?

Smooth white cardstock or warm kraft paper both work well since Posca paint markers need a surface that will not soak up the pigment too fast. Thinner sketchbook paper can buckle under heavy coverage, so cardstock weight gives cleaner, flatter color blocks.

Do I need to seal posca marker art once it is finished?

Sealing is optional but helps if the piece will be handled or displayed without a frame. A light spray fixative or a sheet of glass in a frame both protect the flat color from smudging over time.

How do I stop posca colors from streaking when I fill a large shape?

Shake the marker well and pump the tip a few times on scrap paper before starting, then work in one direction across the shape without going back over wet color. Streaking usually happens when the tip runs low mid stroke or when a second layer goes over paint that has not fully dried.

Can posca markers be layered like paint?

Yes, once a layer is fully dry a second coat in the same or a different color goes down smoothly and increases opacity. Layering too soon, while the first coat is still wet, lifts pigment and causes patchy color instead.

What if I do not have the exact palette colors shown in an idea?

Any bold, opaque set works, the specific hue matters less than keeping color blocks flat and confident rather than blended. Swap freely between similar bold tones, cobalt for navy, tomato red for a bright coral, without changing the method at all.
