27 Cardinal Drawing Ideas of Red Birds on Snowy Branches and Winter Feeders

24

A cardinal drawing earns its place on any winter page, because that one flash of red against bare branches or fresh snow does all the work for you. Colored pencil suits this bird perfectly: you can build the crest and the wing feathers stroke by stroke, leave the white paper bare for snow, and let the red go from soft to saturated with just a few more layers.

Below are 27 cardinals, each in its own setting: feeders, fence posts, berries, birdbaths, a nest of speckled eggs, even a snowman’s arm. Every one is sized to finish in a sitting, so pick whichever scene catches your eye and start sharpening your red pencil.

Start a cardinal drawing with the simplest version of the scene: one plump bird perched sideways on a pine branch, snow sitting along the needles. Sketch the body as two overlapping ovals, a smaller head set forward, then add the branch running diagonally behind the feet so the bird reads as perched rather than glued on.

Lay the red in two passes: a light layer of scarlet lake over the whole body first, then a second pass of true red left out of the chest highlight, where the paper itself can stay the lightest value. Keep the black face mask small and sharp around the beak and eye, it is what makes the head read as cardinal rather than any red bird.

The pine needles go wrong when they get too even. Vary their length and angle in small clumps, and press harder on a few tips so they look sharp rather than soft. If your green pencil runs flat, switch between two shades of evergreen for depth.

For the snow, leave the paper bare and only shade the underside of each clump with a cool grey-blue, since drawn snow needs shadow more than it needs white pencil.

A cardinal pair drawing gives you two birds to compare side by side, which is the easiest way to get proportions right. Draw the male first on the left of a rounded fence post top, then draw the female at a slightly smaller scale and turned a little, so they do not look like copies of each other.

Measure the female against the male before you commit to ink or heavy color: her body should sit just a touch shorter, her beak the same size since beak length does not shrink with the bird. This comparison trick saves most pairs from looking mismatched.

Color the male in the usual reds, then build the female in warm taupe and soft coral, keeping her crest and wingtips tinged red so she still reads as a cardinal and not a sparrow. The weathered fence post takes rough vertical strokes in grey-brown, with a few dark cracks to break up the wood grain.

Finish with a scatter of light pencil texture across the post top where the birds’ feet grip, it anchors them in place.

Move from branches to structure with a cardinal at a bird feeder, a tube or hopper feeder with the bird gripping its edge. Draw the feeder first as a simple box or cylinder with a peaked roof, since getting its straight lines right matters more here than the bird’s curves.

Set the feeder at a slight eye level from below if you want the cardinal to feel close and large, with the roof edge and perches angled to show you are looking slightly upward. That small tilt in the lines does most of the work of suggesting perspective.

Draw the cardinal gripping a perch with its head dipped toward a seed, wings folded close. Color the feeder in warm wood tones with a darker line along the roof’s underside for shadow, then scatter a few loose seeds below in ochre and brown.

If drawing the wire or grid of a tube feeder feels fussy, simplify it to one faint horizontal line and let color do the rest.

Palette: True Red,Warm Wood Brown,Ochre,Shadow Brown

Study a photo of a hopper feeder from slightly below if you have one nearby, it makes the roof angle and perch placement far easier to get convincing.

Berries give a cardinal drawing an excuse for a tiny story: the bird caught mid-bite on a holly or winterberry branch. Sketch the branch first with a few berry clusters, then place the cardinal leaning toward one cluster with its head turned and beak slightly open.

Here is the one hands-on trick worth learning for berries: layer them dark red first, then press a tiny white gel pen dot of highlight on each one after the color is down, not before. That single dot is what makes a flat red circle look glossy and round.

Keep the berries smaller than you think, clustered in groups of three to five rather than scattered evenly, and vary their size slightly so they do not look stamped. The cardinal’s red body can go a shade warmer than the berries so the two reds stay distinct instead of blending into one mass.

If you do not have a white gel pen, leave a tiny uncolored fleck on each berry while you work instead.

Give the female cardinal her own drawing rather than only pairing her with the male, since her subtler coloring is its own good exercise in colored pencil. Sketch her perched upright on a plain branch, her crest held a little lower and less pointed than a male’s.

Build her plumage in thin layers: a base of warm taupe over the whole body, then soft coral along the crest, wings and tail where a cardinal’s red usually sits. Her beak stays bright orange-red, which is the detail beginners most often forget and the one that most clearly marks her as a cardinal.

Work the shading with light, open hatching rather than solid color, since her feathers have more visible texture than the male’s solid red. Leave small flecks of bare paper along her back for a soft highlight.

If your coral pencil looks too pink once it is down, warm it by going over it very lightly with a pale ochre or sand tone.

A birdbath rimmed with ice turns a cardinal drawing into a small winter scene with two textures to solve. Draw the birdbath bowl as a wide ellipse on a pedestal, keeping the ellipse symmetrical by lightly sketching a center line through it before you commit to the final curve.

That center line is the proportion trick here: measure equal distances left and right of it as you draw the bowl’s rim, since a lopsided ellipse is the fastest way to make a birdbath look wrong.

Place the cardinal standing at the rim rather than inside the water, looking down. Color the ice with pale blue-grey and a few jagged white gel pen cracks radiating from one point, leaving most of the bowl’s surface as bare paper caught in cool shadow.

The stone pedestal takes rough, uneven strokes in warm grey, with moss-green flecks near the base if you want extra age in the stone.

Strip the scene back to almost nothing for this one: a single bare twig, a cardinal, and snow falling around it. Draw the twig thin and slightly zigzagged, since a perfectly straight branch looks stiff, then perch the cardinal mid-twig with its tail dipping slightly below the line for balance.

Here is the ten-minute version: color the bird in two layers of red, add a few grey shadow strokes under the wing, and flick a handful of white gel pen dots across the sky for falling snow. That alone reads clearly as a finished winter cardinal.

Given forty minutes instead, add graduated shading behind the bird, a pale blue-grey wash of color building from the horizon up, and vary the snow dots in size so some sit closer to the viewer and look larger than ones further back.

Either way, keep the twig thinner than feels natural. A too-thick branch makes the whole bird look smaller than it should.

A mailbox gives a cardinal drawing a slice of everyday life instead of pure wilderness. Draw the mailbox as a simple rounded loaf shape on a post, flag down or up, whichever you prefer, then perch the cardinal on top of the curved roof.

Getting the curve of the mailbox roof right matters more than any other line here: sketch it as a half oval first and check that both ends land at the same height before adding the flat sides underneath.

Color the mailbox in a worn red or dull grey-green so it does not compete with the cardinal’s brighter red, and let a little rust or peeling color show along the seams for age. Snow can sit in a soft cap along the top ridge, left mostly as bare paper with blue shadow underneath.

If a street mailbox feels too American for your scene, swap it for a wooden farm gatepost instead and perch the bird there.

Cardinals puff their feathers out in deep cold until they look almost round, and that shape alone makes for a satisfying drawing. Sketch the body as one large circle rather than the usual oval, with the head tucked down close to the shoulders and barely any neck showing.

Keep the legs and feet small and mostly hidden under the fluffed belly, since a fluffed bird reads correctly only when the feet nearly disappear. This is the single measuring trick to hold onto: the rounder and smaller the visible feet, the colder the bird looks.

Layer the red in soft, overlapping strokes rather than one flat fill, letting some strokes run slightly outward at the edges to suggest fluffed feather tips catching the light. The crest can flatten slightly too, pressed down against the cold rather than standing sharp.

Add a bare branch underneath with a thin cap of snow, kept simple so the puffed-up bird stays the whole focus.

A garden rake leaning against something or lying across the scene gives a cardinal an unusual perch that still feels believable for late autumn into winter. Draw the handle as one long straight line first using a ruler if you like, since a wobbly handle is the fastest way to undercut this whole idea.

Perch the cardinal gripping the handle sideways, feet wrapped around the thin wood, body balanced slightly forward of center so it does not look like it is about to topple off. Keep the rake head, the metal tines, small and slightly out of focus at one edge of the frame rather than fully drawn, so it stays a prop and not the subject.

Color the handle in warm honey wood tones with a darker grain line running its length, and let the cardinal’s red sit boldly against it. A few fallen leaves scattered near the base in rust and ochre finish the seasonal feel.

Swap the rake for a broom handle if that reads more clearly in your own garden.

Move the season forward with a cardinal set among dogwood blossoms, the first clearly spring scene in this list. Sketch the branch in a gentle zigzag, then place four-petaled dogwood flowers in loose clusters along it before you touch the bird, since the blossoms set the branch’s rhythm.

Each dogwood petal has a small notch at its tip, the detail that tells a viewer dogwood rather than any generic blossom. Draw that notch lightly in pencil first on every petal so you do not forget it once color goes down.

Color the petals in soft white and cream with just a touch of pale pink at the notch, leaving most of each petal as bare paper. The cardinal perches among them in full red, its color doing double duty as the only strong saturation in an otherwise pale, fresh scene.

If dogwood is not native near you, dogwood blossoms are still instantly recognizable and a lovely excuse to practice this light, open flower shape.

Palette: True Red,Soft Cream,Pale Pink,Spring Green

A singing cardinal at the very top of a tree asks for an open beak and a lifted head, both small adjustments from the usual perched pose. Draw the head tilted back further than feels natural at first, beak parted in a narrow open oval rather than the closed point you have drawn so far.

Set the bird at the top of a bare tree silhouette with the treetop lower in the frame than the bird itself, so the cardinal clearly reads as the highest point, catching the first light of the eye. That placement alone suggests early morning without needing a background scene.

Color the body in the usual reds, but add a touch more light along the throat where it stretches open in song. The rest of the tree can stay a loose, thin silhouette in cool grey-brown, deliberately simple so it does not compete with the singing bird.

A pale wash of warm yellow low in the sky suggests sunrise if you want one extra touch of color.

Palette: True Red,Scarlet Lake,Cool Grey Brown,Warm Sunrise Yellow

A spent sunflower head, dark and heavy with seeds, gives the cardinal both a perch and a reason for being there. Draw the seed head as a large dark circle first, then add its ring of dried, drooping brown-gold petals around the edge before placing the bird gripping its rim.

The seed texture is the one hands-on trick worth slowing down for: use the tip of a sharp pencil to press tiny overlapping dashes across the disc rather than drawing each seed as a separate shape, and vary the pressure so the texture looks uneven and natural.

Perch the cardinal at the head’s edge, leaning in as if feeding, legs gripping tightly where the stem meets the disc. Keep the dried petals loose and a little torn at the edges, since a tidy sunflower head looks artificial at this stage of the season.

If dark brown looks flat, deepen the seed disc with a little Payne’s grey mixed in before adding the pencil-pressed seed texture.

Palette: True Red,Dark Seed Brown,Dried Gold,Payne’s Grey

No bird needs to appear at all in this one, since the nest and eggs can carry the whole drawing on their own, or sit with a parent just arriving at the edge of the frame. Build the nest as a rough circle of overlapping curved strokes in varied browns, never a smooth bowl, since real nests are woven from uneven twigs and grass.

Cardinal eggs are pale blue-grey with small brown speckles, and getting the speckle size right matters: keep most specks tiny and scattered, with just a few slightly larger ones clustered toward the wider end of each egg, which is how real speckling tends to fall.

Sit three or four eggs inside the woven rim, each slightly overlapping the next rather than lined up evenly, and leave a gap of shadow where they meet the nest’s inner wall for depth. A few loose twigs trailing out past the nest’s edge keep it from looking too neat.

Add a single cardinal perched at the rim if you want a sense of the parent returning.

Palette: Twig Brown,Pale Egg Blue,Speckle Brown,True Red

A parent cardinal feeding a fledgling turns the drawing into a small moment rather than a portrait, and it is easier than it sounds once you separate the two birds by size and color. Draw the adult first, full red and confident, then sketch the fledgling noticeably smaller, with a stubby tail and soft grey-brown down instead of bright plumage.

Overlap the two beaks slightly, the parent’s head tilted down and the fledgling’s head tilted up with its beak open and wide, since that gap and angle between them is what reads as feeding rather than two birds merely sitting close.

Keep the fledgling’s feathers looser and fluffier than the adult’s smooth red, using short choppy strokes in warm grey-brown rather than the longer, cleaner strokes you use for the parent. A hint of red just starting to show at the fledgling’s crest and wingtips suggests the color still coming in.

Set them on a plain branch so the two birds and the small gesture between them stay the whole focus.

A porch rail puts the cardinal somewhere cozy and close to a house rather than deep in a garden. Draw the rail as two parallel horizontal lines with evenly spaced vertical balusters behind, using light tick marks first to keep the spacing even before finishing each baluster as a full line.

Perch the cardinal across the top rail rather than along it, body facing out toward the viewer slightly rather than in profile, which makes the porch setting read immediately as a place someone is watching from, likely through a window.

Color the rail in weathered white or soft grey-blue paint, with a few worn patches where the wood shows through in warm brown, since a perfectly clean porch rail looks less lived-in than one with a little wear. A single snowflake or two resting on the rail’s flat top finishes the cold-weather feel.

If you would rather skip the balusters entirely, a plain flat rail top works just as well and draws faster.

A birch tree gives a cardinal drawing one of the best color contrasts available: bright red against pale bark marked with dark horizontal bands. Draw the trunk first as one or two vertical shapes, keeping the outline slightly irregular rather than a straight cylinder, since real birch trunks lean and taper.

Light sits on this scene from the side here rather than overhead, so decide which side the light comes from before adding the bark marks: the birch bands sit heaviest on the shadow side of the trunk, while the lit side stays closer to bare white paper with only a few thin marks.

Layer the bark in loose horizontal dashes of charcoal grey and black, broken and uneven rather than evenly spaced, with the pale birch white kept mostly as bare paper beneath them. Perch the cardinal against the trunk itself rather than on a branch, gripping the bark directly.

If a full tree feels like too much, crop in close on just one section of trunk with the bird gripping the bark.

Set the cardinal at the edge of a frozen pond for a quieter, wider winter scene than the branch-based ideas so far. Block in the pond as a low horizontal band across the lower third of the page first, its far edge meeting a thin line of reeds or bare shrubs, before placing the cardinal standing at the near shore.

Here is the quick version: shade the ice in pale blue-grey with a few short streaks of white gel pen for glare, add the cardinal standing simply at the edge, and stop there. That alone reads as a complete, calm winter scene.

Given more time, add a scatter of dry reeds poking through the ice near the shore, a faint reflection of the cardinal’s red smudged softly into the ice below it, and a gradual darkening of the blue-grey toward the far edge of the pond for distance.

Either way, keep the ice surface mostly bare paper. Too much pencil on it stops reading as reflective.

A garden gate gives the cardinal a perch with real structure and a sense of a path leading somewhere beyond it. Draw the gate’s top rail and one diagonal cross brace first, keeping the angle of the brace consistent with the gate’s width so it does not look like it is about to collapse.

Perch the cardinal on the highest point of the gate, usually where two rails meet or the latch post rises slightly above the rest, since that is the spot a real bird would choose and it reads most naturally to the eye.

Color the gate in weathered wood tones, grey-brown with darker knots and a touch of green lichen near the base where damp collects, then let a path or low hedge fade softly behind it in muted greens and browns. Keep the background loose and underworked so the gate and bird stay sharp by comparison.

A light dusting of snow along the top rail ties it back into the cold-season set if you are working through this list in order.

Pairing a cardinal with a chickadee at the same feeder gives you a size and color contrast worth practicing: one large red bird and one small black-capped grey one. Draw the cardinal first, full size, gripping one side of the feeder, then add the chickadee noticeably smaller on the opposite perch, since getting that scale difference right is what sells the whole scene.

Chickadees have a simple black cap and bib with a white face and soft grey-white body, none of which needs much detail to read clearly. Keep its shapes rounder and plumper than the cardinal’s sleeker body, with a shorter tail.

Color the cardinal in the usual reds and give the chickadee flat black, white and pale grey, with no red anywhere on it so the eye has a clear second bird to settle on. The feeder itself can stay simple, mostly a wooden shape with a peaked roof, so it does not pull focus from the two birds.

If chickadees are not common where you live, a tufted titmouse or a nuthatch works just as well for this size contrast.

Wings fully spread mid-flight is the most involved pose in this whole list, so build it from a simple cross shape before adding any feather detail. Sketch the body as a short, slightly diagonal oval, then add the two wings as flattened triangles reaching out from the shoulders at a slight upward angle, as if caught just after a downstroke.

Check the two wings against each other constantly as you refine them: lay a ruler or straightedge lightly across both wingtips while sketching to confirm they sit at roughly matching heights, since even slightly uneven wings make a flying bird look broken rather than soaring.

Color the long flight feathers in slightly darker red toward their tips than the body, with thin black lines separating each feather so the wing reads as overlapping shapes rather than one solid red fan. The tail fans out behind in the same darker red, slightly spread.

Leave the background entirely bare white paper. Any sky at all competes with a wing shape this busy.

Palette: True Red,Deep Wing Red,Soft Black,Scarlet Lake

Flip the usual viewpoint with a cardinal standing on an outdoor window ledge, looking in through the glass rather than being watched from inside. Draw the window frame first as a simple rectangle with one or two dividing bars, then set the ledge as a narrow horizontal strip at the bottom for the bird to stand on.

Angle the cardinal’s head toward the glass, beak close to it, since cardinals really do this in late winter, mistaking their own reflection for a rival. That small behavioral detail is what makes this scene feel observed rather than staged.

Shade the glass in cool pale blue-grey with a few soft diagonal streaks of lighter tone for reflection, keeping it translucent rather than opaque so a hint of a warm interior light or curtain color can show faintly through. The window frame itself takes crisp straight lines in white or weathered grey.

If glass reflections feel tricky, simplify by showing only a faint reflected shape of the cardinal itself on the pane, nothing more.

Palette: True Red,Cool Pale Blue Grey,Weathered White,Warm Interior Glow

A snowman gives the scene a touch of whimsy, with the cardinal perched on a stick arm as if it had landed there by chance. Draw the snowman first as three stacked circles, each slightly overlapping the one below, then add one thin stick arm angled outward for the bird to land on.

Keep the snowman mostly bare white paper, shading only the undersides of each round body section in pale blue-grey to show roundness, with simple coal-black dot eyes and buttons and a small carrot nose in orange, since too much detail on the snowman pulls attention away from the bird.

Perch the cardinal at the end of the stick arm, feet gripping it near the tip so the thin branch bends slightly under its weight if you want extra charm. Add a scarf in a color that does not compete with the bird’s red, a soft blue or green works better than another red.

A few falling snowflakes finished in white gel pen around them complete the scene quickly.

A cherry branch in bloom brings the list fully into spring, its pink blossoms a softer contrast to cardinal red than the dogwood’s white. Sketch the branch with a gentle curve, then cluster five-petaled cherry blossoms in small groups along it, each flower slightly cupped rather than flat.

Vary this cardinal’s pose from earlier ideas by turning its head to look back over one shoulder instead of straight ahead, since a repeated identical head angle across a whole set of bird drawings starts to look copied. That one change in head direction keeps this piece feeling like its own drawing.

Color the blossoms in pale pink with a deeper rose center at each flower’s heart, leaving the outer petal edges nearly white. A few fresh green leaf buds unfurling at the branch tips finish the spring feel, kept small and simple compared to the flowers.

If cherry blossoms feel fussy at five petals each, four will still read clearly as a spring blossom from a short distance.

Palette: True Red,Pale Pink,Deep Rose,Fresh Green

Crop in close for this one: head and upper shoulders only, crest raised sharp and alert, filling most of the page. Sketch the crest first as a tall, slightly curved triangle rising from the crown, since getting its angle and height right before anything else keeps the whole close-up from looking flat.

At this scale, the black face mask around the beak and eye becomes the main shape to get right rather than a small detail: widen it slightly at this zoom, following the curve of the cheek, and leave a thin ring of red between the mask and the eye itself so the eye reads as separate and alert rather than swallowed by black.

Build the red in several thin layers rather than one heavy one, since a close-up shows every stroke and a rushed flat red looks noticeably weaker next to the sharp black mask. Use a kneaded eraser to lift tiny streaks of lighter red along the crest’s edge for a catch of light.

Leave the background entirely bare. A close-up like this needs nothing behind it at all.

You Will Need

• kneaded eraser

Palette: True Red,Scarlet Lake,Soft Black,Deep Wing Red

A low stone wall gives the cardinal a rougher, older perch than any fence or gate so far. Build the wall from a loose stack of irregular stone shapes, no two the same size, with slightly darker lines where each stone meets its neighbors to suggest mortar and shadow.

Vary this piece from the fence post and gate ideas earlier by setting the light source low and to one side, as if it is late afternoon: shade one whole face of each stone in cool grey-blue while leaving the top edges catching warm light, which gives the wall far more depth than even shading would.

Tuck patches of moss into the gaps between stones using small, soft, irregular dabs of green rather than any hard-edged shape, since moss never has a clean boundary. Perch the cardinal along the wall’s top, gripping the uneven stone surface with its feet slightly spread for balance.

A few bare twigs or dried grass poking up near the base finish the aged, outdoor feel.

Palette: True Red,Cool Stone Grey Blue,Warm Stone Tan,Moss Green

Close the list on a quiet, affectionate moment: two cardinals facing each other, one passing a single seed to the other beak to beak. Draw both birds first as simple perched shapes facing inward, beaks nearly touching at the center of the composition, before adding the seed itself as one small oval caught between them.

Vary this piece from the first fence post pair by setting both birds at the same size this time and in profile facing each other, rather than one larger and one smaller, since mate-feeding behavior happens between adults of matching scale and this detail keeps the moment reading correctly.

Color both birds in full, confident red, letting their body language, heads tilted slightly toward each other, carry the tenderness rather than any added detail. Keep the branch beneath them plain and the background bare, so nothing distracts from the small gesture at the center.

One tip to take into your next cardinal drawing: once this close pairing works, try the same beak-to-beak gesture between a cardinal and a different small bird for variety.

What to Do Next

Pick one cardinal that matches how much time you have today, the snowy pine branch or the fluffed-up winter bird if you want something quick, the flight or close-up crest if you want more of a challenge. Start on bright white bristol paper with a light pencil sketch, keep your reds in thin layers, and let the white paper do real work as snow and sky before you reach for any blue pencil at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

What colored pencils work best for a cardinal drawing?

A warm true red and a cooler scarlet give the body depth, while black defines the face mask and wings. Layer two or three reds rather than relying on one pencil for the whole bird.

How do you get the cardinal’s crest shape right?

Sketch it as a tall triangle rising from the crown before adding any feather detail. Check its height against the head: a crest roughly as tall as the head itself usually reads correctly.

How do you draw snow on a branch with colored pencil?

Leave the paper bare for the brightest snow and shade only the undersides of each clump in cool grey-blue. Pencil pressed into snow almost always looks greyer and heavier than snow left untouched.

How is a female cardinal different to draw from a male?

Her body stays warm brown and soft coral rather than solid red, but her beak and crest edges still carry a touch of that same bright orange-red, which is the detail that keeps her reading as a cardinal.

What paper suits a colored pencil cardinal best?

A smooth to lightly textured bristol or mixed media paper holds several layers of pencil without the tooth filling in too fast. Bright white paper also keeps any bare, unshaded snow or sky looking fresh.
