27 Watercolor Chickens Ideas and Other Farmyard Birds

49

Watercolor chickens are the gateway drug of farmhouse painting: round, feathery, slightly ridiculous, and endlessly forgiving if your edges wobble. This list leans into every cozy barnyard scene you have pinned and saved, from a hen dozing in a basket of eggs to a goose squabbling with a rooster over who owns the fence line.

Below you will find 27 ideas, chickens first and in the biggest number, then their farmyard neighbors: geese, ducks, turkeys, guinea fowl and quail, each caught in a small warm moment. Grab warm russet, cream and sage paint, and work down the list from simple to more detailed as your confidence grows.

Start with the hen in a basket of eggs, because the shapes are just two circles and an oval. Sketch a soft egg-shaped body low in the frame, a round basket beneath it, then a few overlapping ovals for eggs peeking over the rim.

Paint the hen first, wet into wet, dropping warm sienna into a damp cream base so the feathers blur softly at the edges. Let that dry fully before you touch the basket, or the two colors will bleed into a muddy patch where you least want it.

If the hen’s body comes out too flat, lift a little color from the center with a dry brush while it is still damp, which gives it a rounded, sat-down look. Add the basket weave in dry brushstrokes of raw umber once everything else is bone dry.

No raw sienna on hand, ochre mixed with a touch of burnt sienna gets you the same warm hen color today.

Chicks following their mother work well right after the basket hen, since you already know how to paint a soft round hen body. This time give her a few confident legs mid-stride and scatter three or four tiny yellow chicks trailing behind in a loose diagonal line.

Paint the hen’s body first in warm sienna, then let it dry while you mix a bright cadmium yellow for the chicks. Drop each chick in as one small wet dot, letting the color pool slightly darker at the base so they look rounded rather than flat.

Compare sizes before you commit to ink: each chick should sit smaller than the hen’s head, or the flock reads more like ducklings than day-old chicks. If one chick comes out too large, let it dry and simply fold it into the composition as an older sibling walking ahead.

Finish with a fine pen for tiny legs and beaks once everything is completely dry.

Move up to a rooster on a fence at dawn, where the light source does the heavy lifting. Decide the sun sits low to one side, off the page, and keep every shadow falling the same direction, under the fence rail and along one side of the rooster’s body.

Block in a soft gradient sky first, peach into pale lavender, while the paper is still wet. Once that dries, paint the rooster in silhouette-dark tones on the shadow side and warm russet catching light on the other, with his comb a small bright red accent.

Beginners often paint the fence rail too thick, which flattens the whole scene; keep it a single confident thin horizontal stroke in burnt umber. For a quicker version, skip the detailed tail feathers and suggest them with three loose dry-brush strokes instead.

No lavender in your set, a touch of ultramarine into the peach gets a similar dawn haze.

Palette: Peach,Cadmium Red,Burnt Umber,Ultramarine Blue

Give the hen a change of scenery and set her in a flower garden among loose cottage blooms. Paint a scatter of simple five-petal flowers in dusty pink and cream first, wet into wet so they bloom softly, then let the whole area dry before adding the hen on top.

Work the hen’s body next in your usual warm sienna, keeping her a little smaller than the flowers around her so she looks tucked into the bed rather than standing on it. Sage green leaves and stems go in last, painted in quick single strokes so they stay loose and garden-like.

If the flowers and hen start to compete for attention, mute the flower colors slightly so the eye lands on her first. This is a lovely one to pair with other blossom studies if you enjoyed the simple shapes in these simple watercolor flowers.

Keep a damp paper towel nearby to soften any petal edge that dries too hard.

Bring a figure into the scene with a girl collecting eggs, which adds storytelling without adding much difficulty. Keep her a simple shape: a gathered dress, a basket held at her hip, and her face turned down toward the eggs rather than toward the viewer, which hides the trickiest part of any face.

Paint her dress first in a soft sage or cream, leaving the paper bare where the apron catches light. Once dry, add her hair and basket, then tuck two or three small egg shapes into the basket with a dry brush so they read as solid rather than flat white circles.

If her proportions feel off, measure her head against her body before you ink: a cottagecore figure reads best at about five head-heights tall, slightly shorter and rounder than a realistic adult. A quicker version skips the face entirely and shows her from behind, bent toward a nest box.

Finish her hem and apron ties with a fine brush once the dress color is fully dry.

Palette: Sage Green,Cream,Raw Sienna,Payne’s Grey

Try a small building next with a chicken coop covered in flowers, a classic cottagecore corner that teaches basic perspective without much risk. Keep the coop’s eye level low, roughly where a seated viewer would look, so the roofline tilts gently away rather than looming overhead.

Paint the coop’s wooden walls first in warm cream and grey-brown, leaving the roof for a contrasting sage or soft blue. Once dry, cluster climbing flowers up one corner in loose dabs of pink and white, letting a few trail onto the roofline for a lived-in feel.

The door and window are where coops usually go wrong, painted too perfectly square; soften the lines slightly with an uneven brushstroke instead of a ruled edge. Swap in a simple picket fence beside the coop if you want more detail without painting a second structure.

Add one small hen near the door last, painted smaller than the building so scale reads correctly.

Palette: Cream,Sage Green,Dusty Pink,Raw Umber

Now for texture: a fancy silkie chicken is all fluff, and the fun is in how you handle the edges. Sketch a round puffball body with almost no visible neck, then work the whole shape wet into wet in soft cream so the color has nowhere hard to land.

While the paint is still damp, dab gently with a dry round brush or a crumpled tissue to lift tiny dots of color across the body, breaking up the flat wash into something fluffy and uneven. Keep her dark feet and face small and precise against all that softness, since the contrast is what sells the fluff.

If the body dries too smooth and flat, go back in with a nearly dry brush once it is bone dry and stipple short strokes outward from the center. A kneaded eraser works in place of a tissue if you are lifting from a dry layer instead.

Leave her little crest of head feathers for a final fine-brush flourish.

You Will Need

• kneaded eraser or tissue for lifting

Palette: Cream,Payne’s Grey,Raw Sienna,Black

A soft natural sponge gives an even fluffier texture than a tissue if you have one in your craft supplies, and it covers more area in one dab.

Keep the whimsy going with a hen wearing a tiny bonnet, a favorite cottagecore detail that only needs a few careful strokes. Paint the hen’s body as usual in warm sienna, then leave a clear gap at the top of her head before adding anything else.

Once she is dry, paint the bonnet in a soft gingham or plain cream, curving it to follow the round shape of her head rather than sitting flat like a hat on a person. A thin ribbon tied under her beak, in a single confident stroke, is what makes the bonnet read instantly rather than looking like a smudge.

This is a case where going too detailed with gingham checks can overwhelm such a small shape; two or three faint pencil-thin lines suggest the pattern just as well as a full grid. If your bonnet color runs into the feathers below, dab it immediately with a dry brush before it dries.

Finish the ribbon ends with a fine liner once the paint is fully set.

Chickens pecking at seeds is a good group exercise, since you paint the same basic hen shape two or three times from different angles. Vary each one: one hen with her head down and tail up, one standing upright mid-step, one turned sideways, so the group reads as a moment rather than three copies.

Paint the bodies first, leaving space between them, then scatter loose dots of ochre and burnt umber on the ground for scattered seed and dirt texture. Work the ground wash before the hens are fully dry at the base so the two layers soften together slightly where their feet meet the earth.

Overlapping bodies too much is the main trap here; keep at least a small gap between each hen so you can tell them apart at a glance. For a faster version, paint just one hen pecking and let the empty space around her do the rest of the storytelling.

Add tiny dark dots for scattered seed last, once everything else has dried.

Palette: Raw Sienna,Burnt Umber,Cream,Ochre

A chick hatching is a small, satisfying detail study that works well as a single focal piece. Draw the egg shape first, then pencil a jagged crack line across one side before any paint touches the page, so you know exactly where to leave the paper bare.

Paint the eggshell in soft cream and grey, working around the crack and the small damp chick poking through it. The chick itself stays a darker, wetter yellow than the dry eggshell, which helps the two textures read as different materials even though they sit side by side.

If the crack line disappears under your wash, scratch it back gently with the end of a brush handle while the paint is still slightly damp. A white gel pen can rescue a lost crack line entirely once everything has dried.

Finish the chick’s single visible eye as the very last mark you make.

You Will Need

• white gel pen

Palette: Cream,Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Yellow,Burnt Umber

After the hatching chick, slow down with a still life: a basket of brown and blue eggs sitting quietly in a woven basket. Sketch the basket first as a simple trapezoid, then fit five or six overlapping ovals inside it before any color goes down.

Paint the eggs individually, varying warm brown, soft blue and cream so no two sit exactly the same, and leave a small bare highlight on each one where the light catches. Let the eggs dry completely before painting the basket weave in dry, confident horizontal strokes of raw umber so the two layers stay crisp against each other.

If the eggs look flat, deepen the shadow where each one touches its neighbor with a single small stroke of grey-brown. This pairs nicely with other small still-life studies if you have tried the simple shapes in these easy watercolor fruit paintings.

A fine liner can add light cracks or speckles to a couple of the eggs for extra realism once dry.

Palette: Raw Umber,Cream,Dusty Blue,Burnt Sienna

Leave the chickens for a moment and welcome a goose wearing a bow, the first of the farmyard neighbors. Her neck is the main challenge: draw it as one long smooth curve rather than several short straight lines, which keeps her looking graceful instead of stiff.

Paint her body in soft white and grey, using a very pale wash and letting the white paper carry most of the highlight work. Once dry, add her orange beak and feet in a quick confident stroke, then tie a small bow in dusty pink or sage at the base of her neck as the final detail.

If her neck comes out too thick, you can always thin it by painting a little background color along one edge to narrow the shape once it has dried. A smaller, quicker version simply shows her head and neck alone, bow and all, cropped close.

Keep the bow’s ribbon ends loose and slightly uneven so they do not look stiff against her soft feathers.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Cream,Orange,Dusty Pink

Build on that goose neck with a line of white ducks on a path, which is really just the same smooth curve repeated with small variations. Sketch three or four duck bodies trailing one behind another, each slightly smaller to suggest distance down the path.

Paint a warm dirt path first in ochre and raw sienna, letting it dry before adding the ducks on top so their white bodies stay crisp against the warm ground. Keep the ducks mostly the bare white of the paper, shading only the undersides and tail with a thin grey-blue wash to suggest roundness.

Spacing is the trick here: keep the gaps between ducks uneven rather than perfectly even, which reads more like a real waddling line. If the front duck ends up too large compared to the others, simply call it the leader and let the size difference work in your favor.

Add small orange feet and beaks last, once the path and bodies are both dry.

Palette: Cream,Ochre,Dusty Blue,Orange

Change the season with a turkey in autumn leaves, where the fan of tail feathers is the whole point. Lightly pencil a half-circle guide behind the turkey’s body before painting, so each feather stripe follows the same curve instead of fanning out unevenly.

Paint the feathers wet into wet, letting deep russet, ochre and burnt umber bleed softly into each other along that curved guide. Once dry, paint the body as a simple dark oval in front of the fan, small enough that the feathers stay the star of the piece.

If the feather stripes blur into mud, you likely worked too wet for too long; next time let each color sit for a few seconds before adding the next so they merge only at the edges. Scatter a few loose autumn leaves around the base in matching warm tones to tie the whole scene together.

Finish with a fine brush for the small red wattle and legs.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Ochre,Burnt Umber,Cadmium Red

Guinea fowl in a meadow bring in a new texture challenge: their speckled bodies. Paint the round, slightly hunched body shape first in a deep slate grey, then let it dry completely before touching the speckles, or they will spread into a blurry mess instead of crisp dots.

Once bone dry, load a fine brush or the end of a cotton swab with white gouache or a white gel pen and dot small marks evenly across the body, leaving the head and neck plain. A soft green meadow wash goes in behind the bird, painted loosely so the stems blur rather than stand as individual blades.

Guinea fowl bodies read as too round if you skip the slight hump at the back; add one small bump to the silhouette before you paint it. A toothbrush flick of white paint across the finished background adds a scattering of seed heads for a quicker, looser version.

Keep the small bare head a plain warm grey with no speckles at all.

You Will Need

• white gel pen or white gouache

Palette: Slate Grey,Sage Green,White,Ochre

Lighten the mood with a duck in rain boots, a playful cottagecore favorite that still teaches something real: dressing an animal in clothing without losing its natural shape. Paint the duck’s body first exactly as you would any duck, then leave the lower legs bare until that layer is fully dry.

Add small yellow or red rain boots at the base of each leg, rounding the toes slightly so they read as boots rather than sharp triangles. A few loose puddle reflections beneath her feet, painted in quick grey-blue strokes, ground the whole scene and suggest a rainy day without needing a full background.

Boots that are too large tend to swallow the duck’s legs entirely; keep them just a little taller than her actual foot would be. If you want more detail, add a tiny raindrop or two falling around her using the tip of your brush.

Finish with a confident orange beak as your last mark.

Palette: Cream,Cadmium Yellow,Dusty Blue,Orange

Widen the scene with geese crossing a country lane, which introduces a simple sense of perspective without much extra work. Keep the lane itself narrow at the top of the page and wider at the bottom, which instantly reads as distance even with no other tricks involved.

Paint the lane first in warm ochre and raw umber, then let it dry before adding three or four geese walking across it in a loose diagonal line, each slightly smaller toward the back. A hedgerow of soft sage green along one edge of the lane, painted as a simple uneven mass rather than individual leaves, frames the whole scene.

If the geese end up floating with no sense of ground contact, add a small soft shadow beneath each one in grey-blue once their bodies are dry. For a quicker version, paint just two geese close together and crop the lane tighter around them.

Leave the sky as bare paper or a single pale wash so the lane stays the focus.

Palette: Ochre,Raw Umber,Sage Green,Payne’s Grey

Quail in tall grass is a quieter, smaller study that rewards patience with edges. Paint the grass first as a loose wash of sage and ochre, using the dry-brush technique to drag a few darker blades upward through the still-damp color so they feel textured rather than flat.

Once the grass layer is dry, add the quail’s rounded body in warm brown, keeping the small topknot feather as a single curved stroke rising from its head, the detail that makes a quail instantly recognizable. Let only the lower half of the bird disappear slightly into the grass so it feels tucked in rather than cut off.

If the grass and bird blend into one indistinct shape, deepen the grass color directly around the quail’s silhouette once everything is dry to push it forward again. A dry brush loaded with dark green can suggest a few more grass blades over the bird’s lower body for extra camouflage.

Finish the small topknot feather last, in one confident upward flick.

Palette: Sage Green,Ochre,Burnt Sienna,Burnt Umber

Add some motion with a goose chasing a farmer, a classic farmyard moment that lives entirely in body language. Stretch the goose’s neck forward and low, wings slightly lifted, while the farmer leans away with one leg raised mid-stride, their two poses mirroring the chase.

Paint the farmer first in simple blocks of color, denim trousers and a plain shirt, keeping the figure loose and slightly cartoonish rather than anatomically precise. Once dry, paint the goose close behind in your usual white and grey, angling its neck toward the farmer’s leg so the direction of the chase is obvious at a glance.

Static poses are the main risk here; before you paint, sketch the two figures lightly in pencil and check that their angles lean the same direction, away from the goose’s beak. A quicker version shows just the goose’s head and neck stretched in from one edge of the page, chasing something unseen.

Finish the farmer’s flying hat or loose scarf last for extra motion.

Palette: Dusty Blue,Cream,Payne’s Grey,Orange

Settle back into something calmer with ducks in a garden pond, where reflections do most of the work. Paint the pond first as a simple oval of blended blue and green, leaving a few streaks of bare paper for sparkle before it dries.

While that pond wash is still slightly damp, drop in soft grey-blue reflection shapes directly beneath where each duck will sit, letting them blur gently into the water. Once fully dry, paint the ducks on top in crisp white and cream, so their clean edges contrast with the softer, blurred reflections below.

If the reflections turn too sharp and compete with the ducks themselves, soften them further with a clean damp brush before the water layer dries completely. A few lily pads in simple green ovals scattered across the surface finish the scene with minimal extra effort.

Keep the pond’s far edge loose and undefined so the water feels like it continues past the page.

Palette: Dusty Blue,Sage Green,Cream,Payne’s Grey

If reflections intimidate you, look at a still photo of any garden pond for reference: the shapes beneath the ducks are simply softer, slightly darker versions of their own bodies.

Bring two birds together with a duck and a hen sharing a nest box, a cozy pairing that plays on their different shapes side by side. Sketch the nest box first as a simple open crate shape, then nestle the hen’s round body on one side and the duck’s longer, flatter shape on the other.

Paint the straw lining in loose ochre strokes before either bird, letting it dry so the warm color sits quietly underneath them. Add the hen in her usual warm sienna and the duck in soft cream and grey, keeping a small gap of straw visible between the two so they read as separate birds sharing space rather than overlapping into one shape.

If the box looks too stiff and carpentered, loosen the straight edges with slightly uneven, hand-drawn lines instead of a ruler. A single egg tucked between the two birds adds a nice storytelling detail without extra difficulty.

Finish both birds’ eyes last, in the same small dark dot, so they match in style.

Palette: Raw Sienna,Cream,Ochre,Payne’s Grey

Pull several birds together into one farmyard with mixed birds, a lively composition that works best once you are comfortable painting each type alone. Pencil in loose placement first: a hen in the foreground, a goose mid-ground, maybe a duck or two further back, varying their sizes clearly to establish depth before any paint touches the page.

Work from back to front, painting the smaller, paler background birds first and letting them dry, then layering the larger foreground hen last so she sits crisply on top of everything else. A simple warm ground wash underneath ties all the birds together into one scene rather than a scattered collection.

Overcrowding is the easy mistake here; three or four birds total is plenty for a page this size, so resist adding more once it starts to feel busy. If you enjoy painting groups of birds together, the layouts in this watercolor birds tutorial offer more ideas for arranging them.

Finish with a loose fence line or patch of grass to anchor everyone to the ground.

Palette: Raw Sienna,Cream,Sage Green,Payne’s Grey

Return to a figure with a girl feeding geese, scattering feed from an apron held out in front of her. Keep her pose simple, leaning slightly forward with one arm extended, and let two or three geese cluster toward her outstretched hand rather than standing stiffly in a row.

Paint the girl’s dress and apron first, then the geese afterward so their white bodies stay clean against her already-dry clothing. Scatter small ochre dots of feed across the ground between her and the geese, painted last with the tip of a small brush so they sit crisply on top of everything.

If the geese look too far from her hand to plausibly be fed by her, move them physically closer before you ink the final details, even if it crowds the composition slightly. A quicker version shows just her hand and apron with one goose reaching up, cropped close.

Finish her hair and the loose fabric folds in her apron last.

Palette: Sage Green,Cream,Payne’s Grey,Ochre

Shrink the scale down with ducklings in a teacup, a whimsical cottagecore pairing that needs careful proportion to work. Draw the teacup first as a simple rounded shape with a small handle, then fit two or three tiny duckling heads peeking just over its rim, nothing more, which keeps the joke of the scale intact.

Paint the teacup in a soft floral pattern or plain cream with a thin painted rim line, letting it dry fully before adding the ducklings on top. Keep the ducklings a bright, soft yellow, smaller in proportion to the cup than a real duckling ever would be to a real cup, since the whole charm depends on that exaggeration.

If the ducklings end up too large, the cup reads as a basket instead of a teacup; check the scale against a real teacup’s proportions before you commit to ink. A thin saucer beneath the cup, painted as one flat ellipse, grounds the whole piece nicely.

Add tiny pink gingham dots to the cup last for extra cottagecore charm.

Palette: Cream,Cadmium Yellow,Dusty Pink,Sage Green

Settle the goose somewhere cozy with a goose on a farmhouse porch, tucked beside a potted plant or a pair of old boots. Paint the porch floorboards first in loose horizontal strokes of warm grey-brown, letting the wood grain stay suggested rather than perfectly straight.

Once dry, add the goose standing calmly to one side in your usual soft white and grey, then paint a small potted plant or a pair of boots beside her to fill out the scene and suggest a lived-in home. A patch of shadow beneath both the goose and the props ties them visually to the porch floor.

Boards that run at competing angles are the easiest way to make a porch feel unstable; keep every plank line parallel to the bottom edge of the page. For a simpler version, drop the props entirely and let the goose stand alone against a single flat porch-colored background.

Finish with a small welcome mat shape beneath her feet if there is room.

Palette: Raw Umber,Cream,Payne’s Grey,Sage Green

Bring the two birds head to head with a rooster and a goose arguing, a comic little standoff built entirely on posture. Give the rooster a puffed chest and raised comb, beak open, while the goose leans in with neck stretched flat and wings slightly spread, the two shapes almost mirroring each other across the middle of the page.

Paint the rooster first in warm russet and red, then the goose beside him in cool white and grey, so the warm and cool colors themselves emphasize the clash between them. Keep a small gap of bare ground between their beaks rather than letting them touch, which reads as tension better than actual contact would.

Flat, parallel poses drain the energy from this scene fast; angle both birds slightly toward each other and keep their heads at different heights so the eye bounces between them. A quicker version crops in tightly on just the two heads and open beaks, cutting out the bodies entirely.

Finish with a small dust cloud or a feather drifting between them for extra drama.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cadmium Red,Payne’s Grey,Cream

Close the set with a farm egg stand with an honesty box, a quiet still life that pulls together everything from the earlier egg basket idea. Paint the small wooden stand first as a simple table shape, then add a hand-lettered sign and a little box for coins sitting beside a stack of egg cartons.

Work the cartons in soft cream and grey, leaving the eggs inside mostly as bare paper with a thin shadow line to suggest their rounded shapes. The sign is the easiest place to lose confidence; keep any lettering loose and slightly uneven rather than attempting perfect type, since a hand-painted wobble actually suits the farmhouse mood better.

If the whole stand looks too empty, tuck a small jar of wildflowers or a basket of extra eggs beside it to fill the composition without adding real difficulty. A faster version skips the sign’s lettering entirely and just paints a blank wooden plank.

Finish with a warm sage background wash to settle the whole scene.

What to Do Next

Pick one idea that excites you most, whether that is the cozy hen in her basket of eggs or the playful goose chasing a farmer, and set up with a small pad of cold press paper and your warm farmhouse palette. Work through the order above as your confidence grows, and let each finished piece guide which farmyard bird you reach for next.

Frequently Asked Questions

What colors do I need for watercolor chickens?

A small warm palette covers every idea here: raw sienna, burnt umber, cream, sage green and a touch of cadmium red for combs and wattles. Add dusty blue and grey for ducks and geese, and you have every bird in this list covered.

How do I stop my chicken’s feathers looking like a flat blob?

Paint the body wet into wet and lift a little color from the center with a dry brush or tissue while it is still damp. This breaks the flat wash into soft, rounded texture that reads as feathers instead of one solid shape.

What paper works best for these farmyard bird paintings?

Cold press watercolor paper around 140 pound weight handles both the wet-into-wet feather washes and the finer dry-brush details well. A smaller pad, around nine by twelve inches, suits these single-sitting subjects nicely.

How do I paint a rooster’s comb and wattle without it looking blotchy?

Let the body dry completely first, then paint the comb and wattle as one confident stroke of cadmium red rather than building it up in layers. A single wet stroke keeps the color clean and avoids a patchy, overworked look.

Can beginners paint geese and ducks even if chickens feel easier?

Yes, geese and ducks actually simplify well once you treat the neck as one smooth curve rather than several short lines. Start with a resting duck or goose before attempting action poses like chasing or arguing.
