A watercolor greenhouse is one of those subjects that rewards you twice: you get the loose, happy chaos of leaves and petals, and you get the glass and iron holding it all together. Every pane catches a different bit of light, every bench holds a little story, and the whole thing feels like a held breath of spring even when it is grey outside your own window.
Below are 31 glasshouse and conservatory scenes, from a quick seed tray to a full wedding under glass, each one built to finish today with ordinary watercolor supplies. Pick whichever one matches your mood and your mug of tea, and let the page guide you from first wash to last glaze.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start with the easiest big shape in this whole list: a tall arched glasshouse, drawn as a simple triangle-topped rectangle in pencil, kept symmetrical by folding the idea of a centre line down the middle. Measure the height against the width before you commit to ink, since Victorian glasshouses read as elegant only when they stand noticeably taller than wide.
Once the pencil frame feels right, trace the white iron glazing bars with a waterproof fineliner so they survive the washes underneath. Drop in loose green washes for the palms inside, letting sap green and a touch of olive bleed together wet-into-wet behind the glass lines.
The usual slip here is palms that look like scribbles with no structure. Save it by painting each frond as one confident brush stroke, pulling from a central point, rather than many short jabs.
If you do not have a fine liner, a sharpened white crayon under the washes keeps the frame lines, with a thin brush and dark paint added after everything dries. Finish today by keeping the glass panels nearly white, just a whisper of grey-blue in the corners.

Potting benches give you a natural place to put a figure without worrying about a full portrait. Block the woman in with simple shapes first: an oval head tipped down, sloped shoulders, and a loose dress or apron shape, all in light pencil before any paint touches the page.
Compare her head size against her torso before inking, since a head that reads too large makes the whole figure feel childlike rather than absorbed in her work. Paint the dress in one flat wash, let it dry, then add the bench, terracotta pots and scattered soil in warm burnt sienna and raw umber.
Hands are where most painters tense up. Simplify hers into soft mitten shapes gripping a small trowel rather than trying to paint fingers, and the scene still reads clearly.
No burnt sienna on hand, mix a little yellow ochre with a touch of red for the same warm pot colour. Finish with a few seedling sprouts in bright green dotted along the bench to today’s tip: paint the greenery last, directly over dry pots, so the colours stay crisp.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Raw Umber,Sap Green,Yellow Ochre
A greenhouse cafe scene borrows the same glass shell as the Victorian glasshouse, so reuse that light pencil outline and focus your energy on the tables inside instead. Place two or three small round tables at different depths, the nearest one largest, to build a believer’s sense of a room receding into the glass.
Paint the furthest table first in a paler, cooler wash, then work forward with warmer, slightly darker washes for the nearer ones. This is the classic trick for pushing a greenhouse interior back in space without any careful perspective lines.
Chairs tend to collapse into messy scribbles if you rush them. Slow down and paint each chair as two simple curved strokes for the back and seat, letting the fineliner add just the thin legs once dry.
No round brush small enough for chair legs, a cocktail stick dipped in paint works for thin dark lines. Scatter a few teacups and a vine overhead in the last five minutes to finish the mood.
Palette: Sap Green,Payne’s Grey,Burnt Sienna,Naples Yellow
If you enjoy painting cozy interior moments like this one, the quiet seated scenes in these easy step by step drawing ideas make a nice companion project.
Scale this one down on purpose: a small backyard greenhouse, barely taller than a garden shed, with a few tomato plants pressed against the glass. Sketch the box shape first, keeping the roof a shallow triangle rather than the tall Victorian arch from earlier.
Paint the glass panels in pale washes of grey-green, leaving white paper gaps for light glinting off the surface. Once dry, add the tomato vines in two greens, a brighter one for new growth and a deeper one for the older leaves lower down.
Red tomatoes dotted in too early tend to bleed into the green and turn muddy brown. Wait until the leaves are completely dry, then add cadmium red dots with the tip of a small round brush.
No cadmium red on your palette, a mix of alizarin crimson and a touch of orange gives a similar ripe tomato colour. Keep this one quick, ten minutes of washes and five of detail, as the simplest project on the whole list.
Palette: Sap Green,Cadmium Red,Payne’s Grey,Yellow Green
Night scenes live and die on where the light sits, so decide now that the warm glow comes from inside the glasshouse and everything outside stays cool and dark. Paint the sky first in a deep indigo wash, then lift a soft cloud shape or two with a dry paper towel while it is still damp.
Once the sky dries, mask or simply paint around the glasshouse shape, keeping the windows as warm yellow-orange squares glowing against the cold blue night. Snow on the roof and ground stays the white of the paper, with just a thin grey-blue shadow line to suggest its edge.
Painters often make the glow too orange and it looks like fire rather than lamplight. Soften it by mixing a touch of yellow ochre into the orange rather than using it straight from the tube.
No masking fluid, paint the dark sky in sections and simply leave the window shapes unpainted as you go. Finish with a scatter of tiny white gouache dots for falling snow over the dried sky.
You Will Need
- masking fluid (or careful painting around shapes)
- white gouache or gel pen for snow
Palette: Indigo,Payne’s Grey,Yellow Ochre,Cadmium Orange
Curl the cat into a simple comma shape before anything else, since that single curve decides whether the whole painting reads as peaceful or stiff. Keep the pencil sketch loose, tucking the tail around the body and the head down against the paws.
Paint the cat’s body in one wash, warm grey or ginger depending on your mood, leaving the lightest highlight along its back as untouched paper. While that dries, surround it with terracotta pots in various sizes, overlapping a few so the group feels gathered rather than lined up.
Fur edges painted too hard make the cat look stuffed rather than sleeping. Soften the outer edge with a clean damp brush right after laying the colour, pulling a few hairs out into the surrounding light with small dry strokes.
No ginger paint mixed, burnt sienna with a touch of yellow ochre gets you there. Add whisker lines last with a fine liner once everything is bone dry, and stop before you add too many.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Yellow Ochre,Payne’s Grey,Terracotta
If painting cats is already your favorite thing, these cat watercolor ideas are worth a look for your next sitting.
Build this scene around an arch of flowers rather than trying to paint a crowd of guests, which keeps it achievable in one sitting. Sketch the glasshouse shell loosely in the background, then draw a simple arch shape in the foreground, roughly centred but slightly off to one side for a more natural composition.
Paint the flowers on the arch as loose clusters of pink and white dabs, working wet-into-wet so the petals blur softly into each other rather than sitting as separate hard shapes. Let this dry fully before adding the thin brown branches of the arch itself on top.
Too many flower colours at once can turn the arch into a blur of mud. Stick to two or three pinks and one white, and let some bare branch show through.
No pink paint mixed, alizarin crimson heavily diluted with water gives a soft blush tone. Add a hint of soft yellow candlelight glow behind the arch as your final touch for today.
Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Rose Pink,Sap Green,Raw Umber
Orchids reward patience with their shape more than their colour, so slow down on the pencil stage here. Sketch two or three orchid stems rising from a pot, each flower built from five simple petal shapes arranged around a small centre, rather than one complicated blob.
Paint the petals in pale washes first, violet or white with just a touch of pink at the centre, then once dry, drop in the deeper magenta markings that give orchids their speckled, exotic look. The stems and leaves come last in a cool green that sits quietly behind the flowers.
Overworking the petal markings is the easiest way to lose the orchid’s delicate feel. Add markings with a nearly dry brush, just a few dabs per petal, and stop earlier than feels natural.
No violet paint, mix a little blue into alizarin crimson for a similar cool purple. Try this one again later with a single white orchid against dark green leaves for a more dramatic variation.
Palette: Violet,Magenta,Sap Green,Titanium White
Fogged glass is really just an excuse to paint soft edges everywhere, which makes this one of the more forgiving scenes on the list. Wet the whole paper first with clean water, then drop in pale greens and greys for the plants behind the glass, letting them blur into vague shapes rather than sharp leaves.
While the paper is still slightly damp, run a clean, barely damp brush in streaky vertical lines down the glass area to suggest condensation trails. This lifts tiny channels of colour and instantly reads as fogged, wet glass.
Painting the plants too crisply ruins the whole fogged effect. If that happens, go back over the hard edges with a wet brush once the first layer is dry, softening them again before they set.
No large wash brush for the wet-into-wet base, a wide flat watercolor brush does the same job. Finish with a few sharp raindrop streaks in dark grey painted last, once everything else is fully dry.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Sap Green,Cerulean Blue,Olive Green
Place the chair before the girl, since a simple wicker or rattan chair shape anchors the whole scene and gives you something steady to build her figure against. Sketch it as a rounded basket shape with thin curved lines suggesting the woven texture, saving detail for later.
Draw the girl settled into it with knees drawn up and a book resting against them, keeping her proportions checked by comparing her seated height against the chair back before you commit to ink. Paint her dress or jumper in one warm, cozy colour, then the chair in pale ochre with thin brown lines once dry.
Hands holding a book often come out too large or stiff. Simplify them into a soft rounded shape wrapped around the book’s edge rather than drawing individual fingers.
No rattan-coloured paint ready, yellow ochre with a touch of burnt sienna gets close. Scatter potted ferns around the chair last to settle her fully into the glasshouse.
Palette: Yellow Ochre,Burnt Sienna,Sap Green,Dusty Rose
Keep the glasshouse simple and low-key here so the bicycle can take the lead role. Sketch it leaning against the glass wall, built from two overlapping circles for the wheels and a simple diamond frame between them, checked for size against the height of the glasshouse door beside it.
Paint the wheels first in a thin wash of grey, leaving the spokes as untouched paper lines, then add the frame in a soft faded colour like dusty teal or rust once the wheels are dry. A small woven basket on the front, painted in warm brown, finishes the vintage feel.
Spokes painted as solid grey circles lose all their charm. Fix it by adding fine dark lines with a liner only after the wheel wash is completely dry, spaced unevenly like real spokes rather than perfectly symmetrical.
No fine liner for the spokes, scratch them gently into the still-damp paint with the end of a paintbrush handle. Tuck a few flowers into the basket as your last five-minute touch.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Dusty Teal,Burnt Sienna,Rose Pink
Give the parrot pride of place on a branch near the centre of the page, since its colour will carry the whole painting. Sketch it as a simple teardrop body with a rounded head and a long curved tail, double-checking that the tail length looks proportionate against the body before adding paint.
Paint the parrot in bold wet-into-wet colour, red or green body blending into a yellow belly, letting the colours bleed softly at the edges while the feather details wait until it dries. Surround it with loose tropical leaves, monstera and banana-leaf shapes, in varied greens behind.
A parrot painted with too many hard edges looks flat rather than feathery. Once the base colour dries, add a few dry-brush strokes along the wing and tail to suggest individual feathers without drawing each one.
No red paint for a scarlet macaw, a scarlet-leaning orange from cadmium red mixed with a touch of orange works nicely. Try a blue-and-gold parrot version next time for a cooler palette.
Palette: Cadmium Red,Cadmium Yellow,Sap Green,Cobalt Blue
Zoom right in for this one, since a close-up seed tray scene is one of the quickest and most satisfying pieces on the list. Draw a simple grid of small square or round cells in pencil, then sketch a few tiny wooden or plastic labels poking out at slightly different angles.
Paint the soil in each cell with a mix of raw umber and black, leaving a few cells paler to suggest different stages of growth, then add tiny green sprouts curling up from two or three of them. Labels get a quick wash of pale wood tone once the soil is dry.
Writing on the labels can easily look cramped or messy. Keep it to a few short pencil-thin squiggly lines rather than actual legible words, which reads as writing from a normal viewing distance.
No black paint on hand, deepen raw umber with a touch of Payne’s grey instead. This quick ten-minute version works alone, or add a wooden tray edge and a trowel beside it for a fuller forty-minute composition.
Palette: Raw Umber,Payne’s Grey,Sap Green,Yellow Ochre
Decide on your light source before a single brushstroke: a low sun rising just behind or beside the glasshouse, warming one side while the other stays in cool shadow. This single choice shapes every colour decision that follows.
Paint the sky first in a graded wash, warm peach and soft yellow near the horizon fading up into pale blue, then let it dry completely before adding the glasshouse silhouette in front. Keep the glass panels on the sun-facing side a warm glowing peach, while the shaded side stays a cooler grey-blue.
A common mistake is making the whole glasshouse one flat colour, which flattens the light entirely. Fix it by mixing two versions of your glass colour, one warm and one cool, and keeping them clearly separate side by side.
No peach mixed, a touch of orange into a lot of white or just very diluted cadmium orange works well. If the sky feels too plain, lift a few cloud streaks with a dry tissue while it is still damp.
Palette: Cadmium Orange,Pale Yellow,Cerulean Blue,Payne’s Grey
Pair this with the graded sky techniques in these easy watercolor skies ideas if you want more sunrise and sunset practice.
Cactus shapes are mostly simple geometry, which makes this a relaxing scene after the softer ones above. Sketch a mix of round barrel cacti, tall columnar ones, and a few flatter paddle-shaped prickly pears, varying the heights so the grouping feels natural rather than lined up like soldiers.
Paint each cactus in a flat wash of green first, then while still slightly damp, drop a touch of deeper blue-green into the shadowed side of each one so they gain some roundness without hard lines. Let everything dry before adding the spines.
Spines drawn too thick and even look like a hedgehog rather than a cactus. Use the very tip of a fine liner or a dry brush loaded with light paint, flicking outward quickly in short, uneven bursts.
No fine liner for spines, a toothpick dipped in white gouache works for light spines against dark cacti. Add one small pink or orange cactus flower as your finishing touch today.
You Will Need
- toothpick or fine liner for spines
Palette: Sap Green,Viridian,Terracotta,Cadmium Orange
Work from the top of the page down for this one, since hanging plants read best when their trailing vines appear to grow downward naturally under gravity. Sketch several hanging pots at different heights along an implied horizontal beam near the top of the glasshouse.
Paint each pot in a simple flat colour, terracotta or white, then build the trailing vines below in varied greens, letting some strands curl and others hang nearly straight for visual variety. Work wet-on-dry here so each vine stays a clean separate line rather than blurring into its neighbours.
Vines that all curve the same way look repetitive and stiff. Vary the curve direction and length of at least half of them, and let a few trail almost to the bottom of the page.
No string or beam visible, simply suggest it with the row of pots lined up with consistent spacing. Next time, try the same composition with trailing string-of-pearls or ivy for a different texture entirely.
Palette: Terracotta,Sap Green,Yellow Green,Payne’s Grey
Think big dome rather than tall arch for this one, borrowing the rounded silhouette of a classic botanical garden conservatory. Sketch the curve freehand or trace around a plate for a perfectly smooth arc before adding the straight base walls underneath.
Paint the glass dome in pale washes first, then build up layers of lush greenery pressed against the inside, varying your greens so palms, ferns and broad leaves each read as a different plant rather than one green blur. Let each layer dry before adding the next to keep the leaf shapes distinct.
A dome drawn freehand often comes out lopsided. Fold your paper in half lightly to find the centre line first, then sketch each side of the curve to match the other.
No plate handy for tracing, a large bowl or even a dinner plate from the cupboard works just as well. Finish with a tiny figure walking along a path inside for scale and life.
You Will Need
- a plate or bowl to trace the dome
Palette: Sap Green,Viridian,Payne’s Grey,Olive Green
Let the vines take the whole upper half of the page here, training them along an implied trellis near the roofline the way real grape vines grow inside old glasshouses. Sketch the main woody stems first as a few thick wandering lines, then add leaves branching off them in clusters.
Paint the leaves in two greens, working wet-into-wet so they blend slightly, then once dry, add bunches of grapes hanging down in deep purple, each bunch built from several small overlapping circles rather than one solid shape. A touch of white left unpainted on each grape suggests the shine.
Grape bunches painted as one flat purple blob lose all their roundness. Vary the tone slightly within each bunch, darker where grapes overlap and lighter where light hits the front ones.
No purple mixed, alizarin crimson with a little blue gets you a convincing deep grape colour. Try this one again later with green grapes for a lighter, sunnier version.
Palette: Sap Green,Alizarin Crimson,Ultramarine Blue,Raw Umber
Centre a small round table set for tea just off the middle of the page, with the glasshouse structure loose and secondary behind it. Sketch the table and a teapot, two cups and a small plate as simple geometric shapes, checking the teapot’s width against the cups so it does not end up oddly oversized.
Paint the tablecloth first in a pale wash, perhaps soft blue or white left as paper, then add the teapot and cups in a warm colour once dry. Place a small vase of garden flowers in the centre as the table’s focal point.
Table settings often end up looking flat without any shadow beneath each object. Add a soft grey-blue shadow shape under the teapot and cups once the colours are fully dry to ground them on the table.
No pale blue for the cloth, pure white paper left unpainted with just shadow lines works just as well. Finish by adding a few loose flower petals in the painting that give the sense of an afternoon breeze.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Rose Pink,Sap Green,Cerulean Blue,Yellow Ochre
Keep this one a quiet still life, just a watering can and a pair of gardening gloves resting on a wooden bench, which makes it one of the fastest paintings on the list. Sketch the watering can first, checking that its spout length looks proportionate against the body before moving on, since a too-long spout is the most common slip with this shape.
Paint the can in a flat metallic grey or faded green, then the gloves beside it in a warm mustard or cream, letting a little texture show by leaving tiny gaps of white paper within the wash. The bench underneath comes last in warm brown, painted around both objects.
Metal objects painted completely flat look plasticky rather than metallic. Add one strip of pure white highlight down the side of the can and a darker grey-blue reflection opposite it while the base colour is still slightly damp.
No mustard yellow mixed, yellow ochre with a touch of raw umber gives a similar worn glove colour. This quick version takes ten minutes alone, or add scattered soil and a few seed packets for the fuller forty-minute scene.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Yellow Ochre,Raw Umber,Olive Green
Fill the whole lower half of the page with tulips here, planted in loose rows that grow slightly smaller toward the back to suggest depth without any complicated perspective lines. Sketch each tulip as a simple closed cup shape on a straight thin stem, keeping the front row largest and most detailed.
Paint the tulips in two or three colours, red, yellow and soft pink, blending each one wet-into-wet from a darker base to a paler tip for a natural gradient within each flower. Stems and leaves in sap green come last, painted around the dried flower shapes.
Rows of tulips can easily look stiff and identical if every one faces the same direction. Tilt a few heads slightly left or right and vary their heights before you paint, so the planting feels a little windblown and real.
No pink paint ready, dilute alizarin crimson heavily with water for a soft tulip pink. Next time, try the same layout with a single colour of tulip for a calmer, more uniform version.
Palette: Cadmium Red,Cadmium Yellow,Rose Pink,Sap Green
For more flower-painting warm-ups before tackling a full bed of tulips, the step by step lessons in this watercolor flowers tutorial cover the basics nicely.
Give the lemon tree a proper trunk and canopy shape before anything else, sketching it as a simple vase-shaped mass of leaves on a slim curved trunk, slightly off centre in a large terracotta pot. Compare the canopy width against the pot width so the tree does not look top-heavy or spindly.
Paint the leaves in a layered wash of two greens, darker underneath and brighter where light catches the top, then once completely dry, add a handful of lemons scattered through the canopy in bright cadmium yellow. Leave a touch of white paper on each lemon for shine.
Lemons painted too uniformly in size look like decorations rather than fruit growing naturally. Vary their size slightly and tuck a couple partly behind leaves rather than placing every one fully visible.
No cadmium yellow, a mix of yellow ochre and a touch of lemon yellow gets a similarly warm fruit colour. Finish by darkening the shadow side of the pot to settle the tree firmly onto the floor.
Palette: Sap Green,Cadmium Yellow,Terracotta,Olive Green
Move the light source to several small points instead of one big sun for this scene, sketching a handful of hanging lanterns along the glasshouse’s inner beams before anything else. Decide roughly where each glow will sit so you can plan the darker sky around them.
Paint the dusk sky first in deep blue-violet, then once dry, paint the glasshouse silhouette and leave small circular gaps unpainted exactly where each lantern hangs. Fill those gaps with warm golden yellow, letting a touch of it bleed softly into the surrounding dark for a gentle glow.
Lantern glows painted with hard, perfectly round edges look like stickers rather than light. Soften the edge of each one while the yellow paint is still damp, blending it gently into the blue-violet around it.
No blue-violet mixed, ultramarine blue with a touch of alizarin crimson makes a convincing dusk colour. A few tiny white gouache dots for early stars finishes the mood today.
You Will Need
- white gouache or gel pen for stars
Palette: Ultramarine Blue,Alizarin Crimson,Cadmium Yellow,Payne’s Grey
Build this one from mismatched rectangles rather than one uniform grid, since a glasshouse made of salvaged windows naturally has panels of different sizes and slightly uneven lines. Sketch an irregular patchwork of window shapes forming the walls and roof, varying their sizes just enough to feel charmingly imperfect.
Paint each panel in a very slightly different wash, some a touch greener, some a touch bluer, so the patchwork quality reads clearly even before you add any frame lines. Once dry, trace the frames in weathered grey-brown rather than crisp white, since reclaimed wood and old metal read as softer and less uniform.
Frames drawn perfectly straight undo the whole rustic charm of this idea. Let your fineliner wobble slightly on purpose, varying the line weight here and there for a handmade feel.
No grey-brown mixed, a touch of Payne’s grey into raw umber gets you there quickly. Add climbing plants growing up one corner as your last five minutes of work.
Palette: Raw Umber,Payne’s Grey,Sap Green,Cerulean Blue
Pull back for a wider view here, showing a small glasshouse as just one part of a busy allotment plot with raised beds and a path running toward it. Sketch the glasshouse smaller than in earlier ideas, placed slightly off centre with rows of vegetables leading the eye toward it.
Paint the furthest rows in paler, cooler greens and the nearest rows in warmer, more saturated ones, the same depth trick used for the cafe tables earlier in this list. The glasshouse itself gets a simple pale wash, kept secondary to the growing beds in front.
Too many vegetable rows at once can turn busy and confusing. Limit yourself to three or four distinct crops, like leafy greens, a wigwam of beans, and a row of something flowering, each painted in a clearly different green or colour.
No room to plan a full plot, a single raised bed in front of a small glasshouse works just as well at this level. Add a watering can or a few canes leaning against the glass as your finishing detail.
Palette: Sap Green,Olive Green,Raw Umber,Cadmium Yellow
Let soft, overlapping shapes carry this whole painting, since a fern house is really about texture more than any single hero plant. Sketch loose fern fronds at varying heights filling most of the page, some curling tightly at the tip and others unfurling fully, with no two exactly alike.
Paint the background ferns first in a paler, slightly blue-green wash, then once dry, layer the nearer fronds on top in a richer, warmer green so the composition gains clear depth. Keep edges soft throughout by working while each layer is still a little damp.
Flat, uniform green ferns lose all their lacy character. Once the base wash is dry, use a fine, nearly dry brush to pull individual leaflets outward from each frond’s central stem, working quickly so the strokes stay light and feathery.
No fine detail brush available, the corner of an old credit card dragged through wet paint creates a similar textured fern edge. Finish by adding a few dewdrops as tiny unpainted white circles for sparkle.
Palette: Viridian,Sap Green,Olive Green,Payne’s Grey
Place the robin on a low branch or the edge of a pot near the lower third of the page, since this small bird needs to feel like a visitor rather than the only thing in the scene. Sketch it as a simple round body with a slightly puffed chest, keeping the head small and the legs thin.
Paint the orange-red breast first as one confident wash, then once dry, add the brown back and wings in a slightly darker tone, leaving a thin gap of white paper between the two colours for a clean, crisp edge. The greenhouse plants around it stay loose and secondary in soft greens.
A robin’s breast painted too bright orange can look cartoonish rather than natural. Mix a touch of burnt sienna into the orange to warm and ground the colour before it goes down.
No pure orange available, cadmium red and cadmium yellow mixed together make a close substitute. Finish with tiny black dot eyes and a few thin leg lines added last with a fine liner.
Palette: Cadmium Orange,Burnt Sienna,Raw Umber,Sap Green
Build this one around low hanging baskets or raised troughs of strawberry plants, since strawberries grown under glass usually sit close to eye level rather than on the ground. Sketch a row of leafy plants with white flowers and ripe red berries tucked among the leaves at various stages.
Paint the leaves first in a fresh mid-green, then add the white flowers as simple five-petal shapes once dry, each with a small yellow centre dot. The strawberries themselves go in last in bright cadmium red, with a few tiny unpainted white seed dots speckled across each one.
Strawberries painted as solid red blobs lose their recognisable bumpy texture. While the red is still slightly damp, flick in a few darker red dots unevenly across the surface for that familiar speckled look.
No cadmium red handy, a mix of alizarin crimson and a touch of orange works well for ripe berries. Try this scene again later with the plants in hanging baskets instead of troughs for a different arrangement.
Palette: Sap Green,Cadmium Red,Titanium White,Cadmium Yellow
Thread a loose string of fairy lights across the top of the glasshouse interior, sketching the wire as one gently sagging line looping between two or three points before anything else. Keep the bulbs small and evenly spaced along it in pencil.
Paint the background greenery and glass first in soft washes, then once everything is dry, add each tiny bulb as a small dot of warm yellow with a faint circle of lighter glow around it. Work bulb by bulb rather than trying to paint the whole string in one pass.
Too many glowing bulbs painted at full strength competes for attention and looks busy rather than magical. Make two or three bulbs brighter than the rest, as if they catch the eye first, and let the others sit a little more quietly.
No yellow gouache for the glow, a white gel pen with a thin yellow wash underneath achieves a similar warm twinkle. Finish by darkening the surrounding greenery slightly so the lights appear to pop forward.
You Will Need
- white gel pen for light glow
Palette: Cadmium Yellow,Sap Green,Payne’s Grey,Raw Umber
Contrast is the whole point here: cold outside, warm and fruitful within. Sketch the glasshouse shell with a light dusting of snow on the roofline, then fill the interior with a cluster of orange and lemon trees in large pots, their canopies nearly touching the glass.
Paint the exterior world first in cool, muted greys and blues, then move inside and let the citrus trees bloom in warm greens, oranges and yellows, the contrast doing most of the emotional work in this piece. Let each colour zone dry fully before the next so they stay clean and separate.
A common slip is making the whole scene either too cold or too warm, losing that contrast entirely. Step back halfway through and check that the warm interior clearly reads as a refuge from the cool exterior before continuing.
No orange and yellow fruit paints both on hand, alternate trees between just one fruit colour for simplicity. Dust a little white gouache snow onto the roof last, once all the washes beneath are dry.
You Will Need
- white gouache for snow
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Orange,Cadmium Yellow,Sap Green
Keep the figures simple silhouettes rather than detailed portraits, since two or three small figures reaching toward tomato vines read clearly even without faces. Sketch an adult and a child as basic rounded shapes, comparing the child’s height against the adult’s waist to keep the proportions believable.
Paint the figures in flat, warm clothing colours first, then surround them with tall tomato vines heavy with red fruit, painted in the same layered green and red technique used for the earlier tiny garden greenhouse idea. Work the background vines in paler tones so the family stays the clear focus.
Figures placed too centrally and too evenly spaced can look stiff and posed. Offset them slightly to one side of the page and vary their heights and the angle of their reaching arms for a more natural, candid moment.
No two matching clothing colours available, dress the figures in contrasting but complementary tones instead, like a blue shirt and a mustard dress. Finish with a basket of picked tomatoes at their feet as the final warm touch.
Palette: Sap Green,Cadmium Red,Yellow Ochre,Cerulean Blue
What to Do Next
Choose one idea that matches your mood today, whether that is a quick ten-minute watering can still life or a fuller glasshouse wedding scene, and start with a light pencil sketch on cold press paper before any paint touches it. Keep your water clean between washes and let each layer dry before the next, and you will have a finished glasshouse painting by the end of your sitting.
Frequently Asked Questions
What paper works best for a watercolor greenhouse scene?
Cold press watercolor paper around 140 pounds works best, since it handles the wet-into-wet washes these scenes need without buckling. Hot press paper is too slick for soft plant edges, and thinner paper warps under repeated layers.
How do I paint realistic glass without it looking like a solid wall?
Leave most of the glass as untouched white paper, adding only thin grey-blue shadow strokes where panes meet or light catches an edge. Painting glass as one flat colour is what makes it read as solid rather than transparent.
What colours make a convincing greenhouse green without looking flat?
Mix sap green with small amounts of olive, yellow ochre or Payne’s grey rather than using one green straight from the tube. Real foliage shifts between warm and cool greens, and that variation is what makes layered plants look alive.
How do I stop my watercolor greenhouse painting looking too busy?
Limit each scene to one clear focal point, like a figure, a bird or a cluster of flowers, and let everything else sit in simpler, paler washes. Too many equally detailed elements compete for attention and the eye has nowhere to rest.
Can I paint these greenhouse ideas without fine detail brushes?
Yes, most detail work here, like spokes, spines or glazing bars, can be done with a cocktail stick, the brush handle tip, or a basic fineliner pen. The washes underneath matter far more than fine tools for how dreamy the scene feels.
