32 Animal Sketchbook Ideas of Wild Mothers and Their Babies

This animal sketchbook collects thirty two small scenes of wild mothers and their young, each one a full little story you can paint in a single sitting. Every page pairs one species with one habitat and one gentle action: a swim, a carry, a climb, a feed. Nothing here asks for a study sheet or a reference wall, just one pair and one moment.

Pick whichever one catches your eye first and work straight from the image above it. The ideas move from simple poses near the start to busier compositions further down, so if today feels like a short session, stay near the top of the list.

Duck and Ducklings in a Pond

Start with the simplest shapes in the whole book: an oval body for the mother duck, a smaller oval tucked behind for one duckling, and a scatter of three tiny puffs trailing in her wake. Keep every shape rounded, no sharp corners anywhere.

Block in the water first as a flat, pale green-grey wash, then let it dry fully before adding the ducks on top. This stops the duck colors from bleeding into the pond.

Today’s tip: paint the ripples around her body as a few loose curved lines in a slightly darker grey, not a full pattern.

Hen Sheltering Chicks Under Her Wing

Measure before you paint: the hen’s body should take up about two thirds of the page width, with her raised wing covering roughly a third of that again. Place the chicks’ heads just peeking from under the wing feathers, no lower.

Keep the hen’s body one warm rust-brown shape and save your white gouache for just the chicks and a few feather tips. That contrast is what makes the scene read instantly.

One tip for today: paint the chicks’ eyes as single dark dots added last, after everything else is dry.

Deer Fawn Nursing in a Meadow

Lay down the doe’s body first as one long curved shape, then add the fawn’s smaller body tucked against her side before any background goes in. Save the meadow grass for last, painted loosely over the edges of both figures.

The usual mistake here is making the fawn too large, which reads as a second adult deer. Keep its shoulder height at about half the doe’s shoulder height, and check that before you add spots.

Today, dab the fawn’s spots on with the tip of a small round brush rather than painting each one with a line.

Fox Carrying a Kit Through Tall Grass

Give the fox a low, forward lean with her head tipped slightly down, since she is carrying the kit by the scruff. Place the kit’s small body hanging just below her jaw, feet tucked, rather than dangling loosely.

Paint her coat in two values of rust-orange, a darker shade along the back and a lighter one on the belly, to suggest the roundness of her body without heavy shading. The tall grass around her legs can stay a flat warm ochre.

One concrete trick: leave a thin strip of unpainted paper along her spine for a natural highlight.

Otter Pup Floating on Her Belly

Think eye level here: you are looking almost straight down at the water’s surface, so both otter bodies read as flattened ovals rather than full side profiles. That bird’s eye angle is what makes the floating pose convincing.

Light should come from one side only, so paint one edge of each otter body a touch darker where it curves away from the sun. Keep the water around them a single soft blue-grey, lighter near the otters and slightly deeper toward the edges of the page.

Today’s tip: add a few short white gouache lines for ripples, placed only near the otters’ bodies.

Bear Cub Climbing Onto Its Mother’s Back

Build the mother bear as one large rounded mass first, her back forming a clear curved line the cub can climb onto. Add the cub second, one paw already on her shoulder, before any forest background goes in.

For the shaggy texture of bear fur, load the brush fairly dry and drag it lightly along the direction the fur grows, especially along the mother’s spine and haunches. This dry brush pass should go on last, over the flat base color.

Try it today: keep the dry brush strokes short and in one direction only, never crosshatched.

Swan With Cygnets Riding Under Her Wing

Keep this one mostly white, so the real work is in the water reflection beneath the swan, not the bird herself. Paint that reflection as a softer, slightly blurred echo of her shape in pale grey-blue.

Tuck two or three cygnet heads just visible at the edge of her raised wing, each a small grey puff with a tiny dark eye dot. Resist adding more than three, since too many crowds the calm feeling of the scene.

One tip for today: mix the faintest warm grey into the white gouache for the swan’s shadowed side, rather than using pure white everywhere.

Rabbit Kit Nestled in a Burrow Entrance

Ten minutes gets you the basic scene: the mother rabbit’s rounded body at the burrow mouth, one kit peeking out beside her, and a flat earthy background wash. That quick version already tells the story.

Forty minutes lets you add the texture of the burrow’s dug soil in layered brown dabs, soft grass tufts around the opening, and a touch of dappled light falling across the mother’s ears. Build those extra layers only once the base shapes are fully dry.

Today’s tip: paint the burrow opening as a dark oval first, so both rabbits have somewhere definite to sit against.

Elephant Calf Walking Beneath Its Mother

Compare heights before you commit to paint: the calf’s shoulder should reach roughly the mother’s knee, no higher. That single proportion check keeps the pair from looking like two adults of different sizes.

Her legs form the frame the calf walks inside, so place the calf’s body fully between her front and back legs rather than beside her. The savanna background can stay a simple flat warm ochre with one darker acacia tree shape.

One tip to use today: paint the mother’s skin with visible loose brushstrokes rather than a smooth fill, to suggest its texture without detail work.

Penguin Chick Tucked on Parent’s Feet

Place the eye level low, almost at ice level, so the penguin’s body reads as a tall rounded triangle rather than a flat oval. That low angle also pushes the horizon line up near the top third of the page, leaving plenty of sky.

The chick sits on top of the parent’s feet, so paint the feet first as a wide flat base before adding the fluffy grey chick shape above them. Keep the sky a soft cold blue-grey to contrast with the one warm orange-yellow beak accent.

Today’s tip: use that warm beak color sparingly, just the beak and feet, to keep the rest of the palette cool.

Wolf Pup Following Through the Snow

The usual mistake with snow scenes is painting the ground pure white, which flattens everything. Mix a pale blue-grey for the snow instead, saving actual white gouache only for a few raised highlights along the wolves’ backs and the snow ridges.

Place the mother wolf mid-stride with the pup a half step behind, its paw lifted to show motion. Their shadows, painted in the same blue-grey but slightly deeper, do more to ground them in the snow than any outline would.

One tip for today: keep both wolves’ legs thin and let the snow shadow beneath them do the grounding work.

Kangaroo Joey Peeking From the Pouch

Build the kangaroo’s body as one tall upright shape, tail curved for balance, before cutting in the pouch opening as a simple curved line across her belly. The joey’s head and one paw poke out just above that line, nothing more of its body showing.

Paint the outback ground in a warm rust-red, a shade that also works beautifully echoed faintly in the joey’s ears for a bit of unity across the page. Keep the sky a pale dusty blue to let that warm ground carry the scene.

Today’s tip: paint the joey’s peeking head slightly darker than the mother’s fur so it reads as separate, not blended into her belly.

Giraffe Calf Nuzzling Its Mother’s Leg

Giraffes run tall, so turn the paper so the composition reads as roughly five head-heights from hoof to crown for the mother, with the calf at about three of those same head-heights. That ratio keeps the calf looking genuinely young next to her.

Paint the pattern of brown patches over a dry base coat using a smaller brush, leaving thin cream gaps between each patch rather than outlining them in a separate dark line. The savanna grass below can stay a loose warm yellow wash.

One tip for today: vary the patch sizes, bigger toward the body and smaller near the legs, for a more natural rhythm.

Harbor Seal Pup Resting on a Rock

Both seal bodies are essentially long soft sausages with no visible legs, so resist the urge to add any limb detail at all. The whole likeness comes from the curve of the back and the placement of the head and flippers.

Paint the rock beneath them first as a flat grey-brown mass, let it dry, then lay the seals on top so their pale bellies catch a little reflected warmth from the stone. A single gull shape far in the background adds scale without extra work.

Today’s tip: round every edge on both seals, since a single straight line anywhere will break the soft look.

Raccoon Kit Riding on Mother’s Back

Keep the first three marks simple: the mother’s arched back as one curved line, the kit’s rounded body sitting astride it, then the tree branch beneath her feet. Everything else, the mask markings and tail rings, comes after those three shapes are settled.

Paint the signature dark eye mask as one confident shape per eye rather than several small strokes, since a hesitant mask reads as smudged dirt instead of fur pattern. The ringed tail follows the same rule, bold alternating bands rather than fussy stripes.

One tip for today: paint the mask slightly asymmetrical on each raccoon, since perfect symmetry looks stiff.

Moose Calf Wading Beside Its Mother

Place the eye line at the surface of the pond water, which means both moose legs below that line get painted as soft, slightly broken reflections rather than sharp shapes. That single light change sells the whole wetland setting.

Build the mother’s long legs and boxy snout first, then the calf’s smaller, rounder version beside her, wading through the same shallow water. Lily pads scattered across the surface can be added last in flat green ovals.

Today’s tip: paint the water reflections slightly darker and softer-edged than the legs standing above the surface.

Koala Joey Clinging to Mother’s Chest

Ten minutes gives you the essential pose: the mother koala’s rounded grey body on a eucalyptus branch, joey clinging front-on with arms wrapped around her neck. That alone tells the whole story.

Forty minutes lets you add the softness of koala fur with small dry dabs of a lighter grey over the base coat, especially around the ears, plus a few eucalyptus leaves rendered in two tones of sage green for depth. Build the leaves last, overlapping the branch slightly.

One tip for today: keep both koalas’ noses a dark, almost black dot, the single sharpest mark in the whole piece.

Flamingo Chick Standing by a Parent

Compare leg lengths before painting the pink: the chick’s legs should be noticeably shorter in proportion to its body than the parent’s long thin stilts. Getting that single ratio right matters more here than any color accuracy.

Lay in the warm pink of the parent’s feathers as one flat wash first, then paint the chick’s fluffy grey-white down afterward so the two textures read as clearly different ages. The shallow lagoon water beneath them stays a simple pale blue-green.

One tip for today: paint one leg of each bird bent, never both straight, for a more natural stance.

Badger Cub Peeking From a Sett

Light this scene from low and to one side, as if early morning sun is just reaching the sett entrance. That single light choice throws half the mother badger’s striped face into warm shadow while the cub’s peeking face stays fully lit.

Paint the badger’s black and white facial stripes as bold, slightly uneven bands rather than ruler-straight lines, since real fur markings are never perfectly even. The earthy mound of the sett entrance can stay a loose mix of umber and moss green.

Today’s tip: let the cub’s stripes be a touch softer and less defined than the mother’s, since young fur reads as fuzzier.

Sea Otter Pup Cracking a Shell on Mother’s Belly

Place both otters floating on their backs again, but this time give the mother a small flat rock balanced on her belly and the pup’s paws mid-motion against it. That little prop and gesture turns a simple floating pose into an action.

Build the water first, then the otters on top, and finally the small warm-toned shell fragments scattered near the rock, painted as just a few quick dashes of cream and rust. Keep the whole prop area small, no larger than the pup’s own head.

One tip for today: angle the pup’s head slightly down toward the rock so the action reads instantly.

Arctic Hare Leveret Beside a Snow Burrow

Keep this one mostly limited to two values of white and pale blue-grey, since the arctic hare’s winter coat gives almost no color to work with. The real interest comes from the small warm accent you choose, perhaps a single golden tuft of dry grass poking through the snow.

Build the mother’s long ears first, folded back against the cold, then the leveret’s smaller, rounder ears beside her. Shadows beneath both hares should lean cool blue-violet rather than grey, to keep the whole scene reading as true winter light.

Today’s tip: save your warm accent color for one tiny detail only, so the cold palette stays convincing.

Beaver Kit Riding on a Floating Log

Measure the log against the beaver’s body length first, since a log that reads too short makes the whole pose look cramped. Aim for a log roughly twice the mother beaver’s body length, floating at a slight diagonal across the pond.

Paint the water around the log with a few short horizontal strokes to suggest gentle ripples from the swim, then add the mother’s flat paddle tail breaking the surface behind her. The kit sits dry on top of the log, a clear visual break from the mother still partly submerged.

One tip for today: leave the kit’s fur a lighter, drier brown than the mother’s wet, darker coat.

Mountain Goat Kid on a Rocky Ledge

Eye level sits low and looking slightly upward here, since mountain goats are usually seen from below on a steep slope. That upward angle makes both goats’ legs appear to taper and foreshorten slightly as they climb.

Build the rocky ledge first as angular grey-brown shapes, then place the kid just above and behind the mother, one hoof lifted onto a higher rock. Keep the sky behind them a pale, slightly hazy blue to suggest real altitude.

Today’s tip: paint the kid’s legs a touch shorter and stockier than you first expect, since young goat legs are not yet long and lanky.

Hedgehog Hoglet Trailing Through Fallen Leaves

Build the spiky texture last, after both hedgehog bodies are blocked in as simple rounded domes. Use the tip of a dry, almost empty brush to flick short strokes outward from the dome shape, working from dark to light so the final flicks catch the most light.

Keep the mother’s dome noticeably larger and her flicked spines a touch darker than the hoglet’s smaller, paler version trailing behind her. Scatter a few flat autumn leaf shapes around their feet in warm rust and ochre, added before the spine texture so they sit underneath it.

One tip for today: never outline the spine shape first, build it entirely from those dry flicked strokes.

Caribou Calf Crossing a Shallow River

Once this basic wading pose works, vary it next time by changing only the water level, perhaps up to the knees instead of just the hooves, which shifts how much leg you need to paint below the surface. The same two figures can carry several different versions of this scene.

For this version, keep the water fairly shallow and clear, so both sets of legs stay mostly visible with just a soft blur at the waterline. Antlers on the mother, even small ones, add useful height variety against the flat river background.

Today’s tip: paint the calf slightly behind and to one side of the mother, never directly parallel, for a more natural crossing.

Puffin Chick Waiting at a Cliff Burrow

The usual mistake with puffins is painting the beak too small and flat, when its bold orange and grey bands are really the whole point of the bird. Build the beak as a clear wedge shape first, then add its color bands before touching the rest of the body.

Place the fluffy grey chick just at the burrow entrance in the cliff face, waiting while the parent’s beak carries a few small fish shapes. The cliff itself can stay a simple flat grey with a thin strip of blue sea far below.

One tip for today: keep the fish in the beak to just two or three simple silver shapes, no more.

Zebra Foal Standing in Striped Shade

Light and shadow do double duty here, since the striped shade cast by nearby acacia trees should echo the zebra’s own stripes without quite matching them. Paint the ground shadow stripes slightly wider and softer-edged than the crisp stripes on the animals themselves.

Build both zebra bodies first in flat cream, then add the black stripes as confident curved bands that follow the roundness of the body, never as straight lines across a flat shape. The foal’s stripes can be a touch browner than the mother’s, since foal coats often carry a warmer tone.

Today’s tip: let a few of the foal’s stripes merge or blur slightly, since young stripe patterns are rarely as crisp as an adult’s.

Opossum Babies Riding on Mother’s Back

This is the most crowded idea so far, so plan the composition before any paint touches the page: sketch the mother’s arched back and tail first, then mark five or six small rounded shapes along her spine for the babies, spacing them unevenly for a natural cluster.

Paint the mother’s body in one flat grey-white base, then add each baby as a slightly smaller, slightly pinker version of the same shape, finishing with the long bare tails curling down for balance. Keep the night background simple and dark so the pale fur stands out clearly.

One tip for today: vary each baby’s size just slightly so the row never looks like a stamped pattern.

Whale Calf Swimming Beside Its Mother

Scale is the whole challenge here, so decide early how much of each whale body fits on the page. Letting the mother’s body run off both edges of the frame while keeping the calf fully visible beside her instantly suggests her enormous size without needing to paint her entire length.

Build the deep blue water first in a graded wash, darker at the top of the page and lighter lower down, then add both whale shapes on top once dry. A single shaft of lighter blue sunlight falling through the water adds depth without much extra work.

Today’s tip: keep the calf’s body noticeably rounder and stubbier than the mother’s longer, sleeker shape.

Lynx Kitten Pouncing Near Its Mother

Give the kitten a dynamic mid-air pouncing pose, front paws forward and back legs still pushing off the ground, while the mother lynx stays still and watchful nearby. That contrast between frozen stillness and motion is what carries the whole scene.

Paint her distinctive ear tufts and short tail as crisp, deliberate shapes added near the very end, after the main fur color is blocked and dry. The snowy pine forest behind them can stay loose and soft, so the two sharp-edged lynx shapes read clearly against it.

One tip for today: angle the kitten’s whole body diagonally across the page for more energy than a straight horizontal pose.

Meerkat Pup Standing Watch With Its Mother

Build this scene around one strong vertical line, since both meerkats stand upright on their hind legs, scanning the horizon together. Keep their bodies slim and elongated, with the pup noticeably shorter and a little less steady on its feet.

Paint the warm desert sand as a flat ochre wash first, then add a single long shadow stretching from each meerkat to suggest low, strong sunlight. Their pale bellies catch that same warm light, so leave a thin strip of lighter color down the front of each body.

Today’s tip: paint both sets of eyes looking in exactly the same direction, which does most of the storytelling work.

Tapir Calf Resting Beside Its Mother

Once the basic resting pose works well, try varying it next time by changing the habitat entirely, perhaps a muddy riverbank instead of forest floor, since tapirs move easily between both settings. The same calm lying-down pose adapts to either.

For this version, paint the calf’s distinctive striped and spotted coat over a dry base layer, using small dabs rather than lines, since young tapirs lose this pattern as they age and it is a nice detail to include. The mother’s coat stays a simple, unbroken dark brown for contrast.

One tip for today: keep the forest floor background loose and dark so the calf’s pattern stays the clear focal point.

What to Do Next

Choose one pair from this list, maybe the duck and ducklings if today is short on time, and start with a light pencil sketch on a fresh page of cold press watercolor paper. Block in the background wash, let it dry, then build the parent and baby on top. Frequently Asked Questions

What gouache colors work best for an earthy animal sketchbook like this one?

A small palette goes a long way: raw umber, yellow ochre, a soft sage green, a muted blue-grey and titanium white cover most fur, water and sky. Add one warm accent, such as a burnt orange or coral, to use sparingly across each scene for a bit of life.

How do I keep two animals the same species from looking identical in size?

Compare a specific body part rather than guessing: shoulder height, leg length or head size against the parent. Sketch both figures lightly in pencil first, checking that the baby reads as roughly half to two thirds the parent’s scale, before any paint goes down.

Is gouache forgiving for a beginner working on animal subjects?

Yes, more than watercolor, because gouache dries matte and opaque, so a lighter color can go back over a darker mistake once dry. This makes it easier to fix a shape that went wrong on the first pass without starting the whole page over.

How much background detail does each sketchbook page actually need?

Very little. Keep habitats loose and soft, using flat washes or a few simple shapes for grass, water or rock, so the two animals stay the clear focus. A detailed background competes with the pair instead of supporting their moment together.

What is a good order to paint each scene in?

Block in the background wash first and let it dry fully, then paint the parent’s body, then the baby, then any small final details like eyes, highlights or texture. Working background to foreground keeps edges clean and avoids muddying earlier layers.
