28 London Drawing Sketches for Your Sketchbook: Canal Boats, Flower Stalls and Rainy Bus Windows

6

London drawing sketches work best when you stop chasing the postcard view and draw what is actually in front of you on a walk: a boat chimney, a bucket of roses, a rain-streaked window. These pages come together fast because the subjects are small and the marks are loose, so you can sit on a bench or lean against a railing and finish before your tea goes cold.

Below are 28 corners of the city sized for a single sitting, each with its own pencil or fineliner approach, a watercolor wash and a few red marker touches to keep the page cheerful. Pick whichever one matches the weather outside your window today and work straight through it.

Start with a painted canal boat moored at the water’s edge, its chimney sending up a thin curl of smoke. Draw the hull first as one long flattened rectangle with a gentle curve at each end, then add the cabin roof as a slightly smaller shape sitting on top. Keep the fineliner loose here: a boat that leans a little looks more alive than one drawn with a ruler.

Once the lines are down, measure the boat against itself rather than guessing: the cabin height should sit at roughly a third of the hull’s length, which keeps the proportions from going top-heavy or squashed. Add portholes as small circles and a stripe of color along the side before you pick up paint.

Wash the hull in a saturated color, let it dry a touch, then drop a darker shade along the waterline for reflection. Touch red marker onto a painted door or flower box for a spot of warmth against the grey water.

If you do not have a canal nearby to study, any narrow houseboat photo works just as well as reference.

A market stall stacked with buckets of winter roses and eucalyptus gives you a cluster of soft round shapes against straight metal buckets, a nice contrast to draw. Block in the buckets first as simple cylinders, then fill each one loosely with overlapping circles for rose heads and longer curved strokes for the eucalyptus stems.

Work from the back of the stall forward so nearer buckets overlap the ones behind them, which instantly gives the page depth without any real perspective drawing. Keep the flower shapes simple at this stage, just circles and ovals, since detail gets added with color rather than line.

Wash the roses in warm pink and red, dab a few red marker strokes into the centers for the darkest petals, then cover the eucalyptus in a cool sage green. If the stall looks too flat, add a cast shadow under each bucket to ground it on the pavement.

No real market nearby? A bunch of flowers on your own kitchen table gives the same bucket-and-bloom arrangement to practice on.

Seen from the river path at dawn, Tower Bridge becomes a simple silhouette of two towers and a long low walkway, so resist the urge to draw every stone. Pencil in the horizon line low on the page, then build the towers as tall rectangles with pointed tops before linking them with the straight line of the walkway and the curve of the bascules below.

Keep the eye level at the height of your own standing position on the path: everything in the bridge sits above that line, and the river in front of it sits below, which makes the whole structure feel like it is actually rising out of the water. The low dawn light comes from one side, so shade one face of each tower and leave the other pale.

Wash the sky in soft peach and grey, then drop a cool blue grey wash over the river with a few horizontal strokes left dry for sparkle. Add frost texture on the railings in front with a white gel pen once the wash is dry.

A crooked old bookshop doorway with a bench of books outside gives you plenty of character in a small space. Start with the doorway itself, letting the frame lean very slightly off vertical since old buildings rarely sit straight, then add the uneven top of the door and a small window beside it.

Draw the book bench next as a simple rectangle with a stack of thin overlapping rectangles for the books, varying their heights so the pile looks casual rather than stacked by a ruler. Line work goes a little scratchy here, which suits the worn, lived-in feel of the building.

Once the ink is dry, wash the brickwork in warm ochre and burnt sienna, letting the color pool unevenly to suggest old weathered stone. A kneaded eraser can lift a soft highlight along one edge of the doorframe if your pencil underlayer gets too dark before the ink goes on.

If you enjoy drawing cozy shopfronts, the ideas in this window drawing roundup work well alongside this one.

A royal guard standing still in light snow is really an exercise in one tall, simple silhouette. Block the figure in as a narrow triangle from the bearskin hat down to the boots, keeping the proportions generous: the hat alone takes up close to a quarter of the whole height, so do not shrink it to fit.

Draw the hat first as a tall rounded shape, then the red tunic as a simple column below it, adding the dark trousers and boots last. Standing guards hold a strict, straight pose, so keep the line work upright and avoid any slouch in the shoulders.

Wash the tunic in bright red marker for the main punch of color on the page, then keep everything else muted: grey stone background, soft white gouache or left-white paper for the falling snow. Flick tiny dots of white gel pen over the dried wash for snowflakes.

Swap the red marker for red watercolor if that is all you have; it still reads as the brightest thing on the page.

The view from the top deck of a bus through a rain-streaked window turns an ordinary ride into an easy sketch. Draw a wide curved rectangle for the window frame first, then sketch the street scene beyond it loosely, since it will be partly obscured anyway: a few building shapes, a bus stop, a tree.

The trick that sells this one is the ten-minute version versus the forty-minute version. In ten minutes, draw the window frame and a quick wash of the street colors behind it, then drag a dry brush loaded with grey paint downward in a few streaks to suggest rain on the glass. In forty minutes, add reflected light patches on the glass and a hint of your own hand resting on the sill in the foreground.

Keep the colors behind the glass slightly desaturated compared to what you would use outdoors, since rain and glass mute everything a shade. A damp cotton bud can soften a rain streak that goes on too dark.

A narrow cobbled lane in the old City lit by a single gas lamp is a small study in light against dark, so plan your darkest darks before you touch color. Sketch the lane as a simple tapering corridor, narrower at the far end, with tall building walls pressing in on both sides and a single lamp post standing roughly a third of the way down.

Draw the cobbles as a loose scatter of small curved lines rather than individual stones, which reads as texture from a normal viewing distance without taking forever. The lamp becomes the single light source in the scene, so every wall near it gets a warm glow while the far end of the lane fades into grey shadow.

Wash the buildings in deep grey and umber, then paint a soft yellow halo around the lamp before the surrounding wash is fully dry, letting the colors bleed slightly into each other. Add a few red marker flecks on a distant window box for warmth.

Pans of steaming paella at a covered market stall give you a chance to draw rising steam, always a satisfying trick on paper. Draw the pans first as wide flat ovals seen from a slight angle above, since that is the usual view at a stall, then fill them with loose dots and curved marks for rice, peppers and seafood rather than drawing each grain.

Steam is the quick-trick texture here: load a dry, almost paint-free brush with pale grey and drag it upward in soft wavy strokes above the pan, letting the bristles skip and break the line so it looks like vapor rather than smoke. Too solid a steam line just reads as a grey smudge, so keep the brush dry and the strokes light.

Wash the rice in warm yellow with touches of red marker for the peppers and chorizo, then darken the pan rims in charcoal grey to ground them. A little warm orange glow behind the stall suggests the heat without needing to draw flames.

Palette: Yellow Ochre,Cadmium Red,Sap Green,Payne’s Grey

Try this one with a dry brush loaded with only a trace of paint, since a too-wet brush turns the steam into a flat wash instead of wispy trails.

The Shard rising above old brick warehouse roofs on a grey day is a good lesson in scale by comparison: draw the warehouse roofline first across the lower third of the page, then measure the tower against it. If the warehouse is one unit tall, the Shard should rise roughly four or five of those same units above it, which keeps the height convincing without any real math.

Sketch the tower as a tall tapering triangle with faceted sides, a few diagonal lines, rather than a flat glass box. The old roofs below stay warm and textured with slate tiles and chimney pots, giving a clear contrast between old brick and new glass.

Wash the sky in flat grey, leave the tower mostly pale with just a hint of blue grey shading on one faceted side, and warm the brick roofs in burnt sienna and ochre. The contrast in color temperature does most of the storytelling here.

A train pulling into a curved tiled Underground platform is all about that bending perspective line running through the whole page. Draw the platform edge as a long curve sweeping from the bottom corner up toward the center of the page, then let the tiled wall behind it follow the same curve a little higher up.

The train itself sits low and long along that curve, nose slightly foreshortened since it faces toward you as it arrives. Keep the tile pattern loose, a repeated row of small rectangles rather than each one drawn individually, fading into looser marks as the curve recedes into the distance.

Wash the train in its own bold color, keep the tiled walls in cool cream and grey, and drop a warm glow from the platform lights reflecting on the curved tiles. If straight tile rows feel fiddly, a few confident curved pencil lines under a light wash reads just as well from a normal viewing distance.

A pot of tea and a cup on a marble café table by a rainy window is an easy still life you can draw from your own table right now. Start with the teapot as a rounded body with a simple curved spout and handle, then add the cup and saucer beside it, keeping both shapes loose and slightly imperfect for a hand-drawn feel.

The marble tabletop gets its character from a few thin wandering pencil lines before you paint, then a grey wash with the lines left showing through as veining. The rainy window behind sits soft and blurred, just a vague wash of grey and pale blue with a few vertical drips.

If this is your first time painting marble, resist outlining every vein with a hard edge; let the pencil lines stay faint and let the wash do most of the work. A splash of red marker on the teapot lid or a small flower in a vase adds the one bright note the page needs.

A mounted guard on a black horse standing in a sentry box combines a strong animal shape with an architectural frame, so build both at once. Sketch the sentry box first as a simple tall arch, then fit the horse and rider inside it, letting the horse’s back and the rider’s shoulders break slightly past the opening for a natural, not-too-neat composition.

Measure the horse against the sentry box height as your proportion check: the horse’s back should sit at roughly the midpoint of the box opening, with the rider’s head close to the top of the arch. This one comparison keeps the whole group from looking too small or too large for its frame.

Keep the horse’s black coat in deep washes of Payne’s grey and black, saving pure white highlights for the glossy curve of its neck and flank. Red touches go on the rider’s uniform details rather than the horse itself, keeping the strongest color where the eye should land first.

The round timber and thatch of the Globe Theatre seen from the river gives you a satisfying drum shape to practice. Draw the building as a wide circle first, flattened slightly at the base where it meets the ground, then add the thatched roof as a cone-like band around the upper edge with short choppy lines suggesting straw texture.

Work the timber framing next as a grid of simple crossing lines over the lower white walls, loosely spaced rather than perfectly even, since real Tudor timber framing was never perfectly regular either. The river sits in the foreground as a few horizontal bands of blue and grey.

Wash the thatch in warm straw yellow and umber, the timber framing in dark brown against cream walls, and the river in cool blue with a thin strip of reflected cream from the building. A dry brush dragged sideways across the thatch band after the wash dries adds a bit of broken straw texture.

A street violinist playing under the arches of a railway bridge sets up a strong dark frame around a small bright figure. Draw the brick arch first as a heavy curved shape filling most of the page, deliberately dark and solid, then place the violinist small within it, bow arm raised mid-stroke.

The light source here matters more than the figure: daylight spills in from one open end of the arch, so that side of the brickwork stays pale while the rest sinks into shadow, and the violinist’s lit side should match that same direction. Getting this consistent is what makes the small figure read clearly against such a dark setting.

Wash the brick arch in deep umber and grey, keep the violinist’s coat in a muted color, then let a patch of red from a scarf or case lining be the one warm note inside all that shadow. Leave a little pale paper glowing at the arch opening to suggest the brighter street beyond.

Chimney pots and slate rooftops seen from an attic window turn a simple view into a pattern-drawing exercise. Frame the whole scene inside a window shape first, then draw the rooftops as a row of angled triangles at different heights, topped with small clustered chimney pots drawn as simple cylinders in groups of two or three.

From this high attic eye level, every roof slopes away from you at a slightly different angle, so vary the triangle angles rather than repeating the same slope across the whole row. That small variation is what sells the feeling of looking down over real rooftops rather than a repeated pattern.

Wash the slate roofs in cool blue grey, warm the chimney pots in terracotta, and leave the window frame itself in plain cream paper or a faint grey wash so it reads as glass. A scatter of tiny bird shapes on a chimney pot adds life without much extra drawing.

Rooftop views pair nicely with the quieter page ideas in this sketchbook diary collection if you want more small daily scenes to try.

Narrowboats squeezing through the lock gates at Camden gives you two or three boat shapes stacked close together in a tight space, a fun change from drawing one boat alone. Sketch the lock walls first as two tall parallel verticals, then fit the narrowboats between them, letting their long low hulls nearly touch the gates on either side.

For the quick version, draw one boat and the lock gates in ten minutes with a flat wash of color on each and call it finished. For the longer version, add a second boat behind the first, overlapping slightly, plus the ripples and foam where the lock water churns around the gates, which takes the page from a quick note to a fuller scene.

Wash each boat hull in a different bold color so they read as separate vessels even though they are squeezed close together, and keep the lock walls in damp mossy green and grey stone tones. A few white gel pen flicks on the water suggest the churn at the gates.

Frost on the last roses in a Regent’s Park garden is a quiet little study in light touching dark leaves. Draw the rose heads first as loose overlapping circles on thin curving stems, then add a few spiky dark leaves around each bloom, keeping the whole cluster small and contained rather than spreading across the whole page.

Frost is best handled as the very last step with the lightest touch: once your washes of deep red and green are fully dry, flick tiny dots and short dashes of white gouache or gel pen along the edges of the petals and leaves. Too much frost buries the color underneath, so a light scatter reads better than a heavy coating.

If gouache feels too thick to control, a white colored pencil pressed firmly over the dry wash gives a similar frosted edge with less risk of overdoing it. Keep the background simple, just a soft grey green wash, so the frosted roses stay the clear focus.

An old umbrella shop window full of carved handles and canes is really a drawing of repeated curved shapes lined up in a row, satisfying once you get the rhythm going. Draw the window frame first as a simple rectangle, then fill it with a row of umbrella handles, each one a slightly different curved hook or knob shape so the row does not feel mechanical.

Vary the handle materials as you add color: warm honey wood for some, deep black for others, a touch of brass tone on a metal ferrule here and there. That variety does more to make the window feel full and real than adding more handles would.

Keep the glass of the window itself nearly colorless, just a faint grey blue wash with a diagonal streak of reflected light left as untouched paper. A few red marker dots on a ribbon tied around one handle gives the display its one cheerful accent.

A whale skeleton hanging in the arched hall of a natural history museum is a striking shape once you simplify it into a long tapering curve. Draw the spine as one sweeping line from the skull down through the tail, then add the ribs as a series of short curved lines hanging from that spine, spaced slightly wider apart toward the middle and tighter near the ends.

The arched hall ceiling and tall windows behind the skeleton set the scale, so draw those architectural lines first, pale and faint, before the bones go on top in darker ink. Keeping the architecture lighter in tone than the bones is what lets the skeleton read as the clear subject hanging in open space.

Wash the stone hall in cool pale grey and cream, then leave the bones themselves mostly white or very pale bone color with only soft grey shadow beneath each rib. A thin suspension line or two drawn up toward the ceiling sells the hanging effect.

The hilltop at Greenwich with the city skyline at sunrise gives you a wide view to practice without any single building needing much detail. Draw the hill as a gentle curving line across the lower part of the page, then lay the skyline along the horizon beyond it as a row of simple small rectangles and triangles of varying heights.

Since the light source is the rising sun sitting low on the horizon, keep the sky brightest right behind the skyline and let it cool toward the top of the page, while every building along that horizon gets a dark silhouette edge against the glow. The hill itself stays in soft shadow, barely detailed beyond a tree or bench silhouette or two.

Wash the sky in warm peach and gold near the horizon fading up into cool lavender grey, then keep the skyline and hill in flat dark silhouette tones. A single red dot of color on a bench or a kite in the foreground gives the eye somewhere to land first.

Palette: Naples Yellow,Payne’s Grey,Lavender,Cadmium Red

A dog in a tartan coat waiting outside a corner café is a small, friendly subject that fits in the corner of a busy page. Draw the dog’s body first as a simple rounded shape sitting back on its haunches, then add the coat over the back as a slightly looser shape than the body underneath, since a coat always sits a bit away from the fur.

Compare the dog’s head size to its body as your proportion check: for most breeds the head should be close to a third of the total seated height, which keeps a small dog from accidentally looking like a puppy or an oversized one from looking like a different animal altogether.

Wash the coat in a simple tartan suggestion, just a few crossing red and green lines over a base color rather than a full woven pattern, which reads perfectly well at sketch size. Keep the café wall behind soft and blurred so the dog stays the clear focus of the small scene.

Palette: Burnt Umber,Cadmium Red,Sap Green,Payne’s Grey

If the coat pattern feels fiddly, two or three crossing lines in red and green over a solid base color reads as tartan just as well as a full check.

Fish and chips in paper on a bench by the Thames is a quick, cheerful still life you can draw from memory or a reference photo in minutes. Draw the paper wrapping first as a loose irregular cone shape, opened at the top, then fill it with a pile of simple elongated ovals for chips and one larger rounded shape for the fish.

Keep the chips loose and overlapping rather than drawing each one separately, since a neat grid of chips looks far less appetizing than a casual tumble. The paper wrapping itself can stay mostly white or cream, just a few grey shadow lines where it folds.

Wash the chips in warm golden yellow with a touch of burnt sienna at the crispy edges, and dot the fish batter in the same tones with slightly darker shadow underneath. A thin strip of blurred grey river visible behind the bench finishes the scene without needing much extra work.

The Victorian palm house at Kew with frost on its glass pairs a curved iron structure with a soft winter texture, a good combination for a single page. Draw the building’s curved glass roof first as a long sweeping arc, then add the vertical iron ribs crossing it at even intervals, slightly closer together where the curve gets steeper near the top.

The palm fronds pressing against the glass from inside stay loose and simple, just a few long curved leaf shapes overlapping behind the ironwork, suggesting the greenhouse’s warmth trapped inside the cold frame.

Wash the glass panels in pale blue grey, then once dry, use a dry brush loaded with white gouache and dragged lightly across several panels to suggest frost crystals forming unevenly over the glass. Leaving some panels completely clear so the green fronds show through keeps the frost from flattening the whole structure into one white blur.

Palette: Cerulean Blue,Sap Green,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White

Two people meeting under the vaulted glass roof of St Pancras station gives you a huge architectural frame around two very small figures, a satisfying scale contrast to draw. Sketch the great arched roof first with a few long sweeping curves and cross ribs, keeping the lines confident and a little loose since no one needs every rib drawn.

Place both figures small near the center of the page, one with arms slightly open in greeting, the other leaning toward them, their combined height taking up only a small fraction of the hall’s total height. That extreme size difference is what makes the space feel properly grand.

Wash the vaulted roof and iron structure in cool pale blue and grey, letting soft light fall through onto the station floor below, and keep the two figures in warmer, more saturated colors so they stand out against all that cool architecture. A single red scarf or bag on one figure draws the eye straight to the moment.

For more big-architecture sketchbook pages like this one, the rainy city sketchbook ideas here make a good companion list.

An antiques stall of teacups and old cameras on Portobello Road gives you a cheerful jumble of small objects to arrange on one table shape. Draw the table or crate first as a simple flat surface, then scatter teacups, saucers and a camera or two across it, overlapping the objects naturally rather than lining them up in neat rows.

Vary the object sizes across the stall as your composition trick: a few larger items like a bigger camera or teapot anchor the arrangement, while smaller teacups and trinkets fill the gaps between them, which keeps the whole stall from reading as one flat pattern of same-sized shapes.

Wash each object in its own distinct color so the stall feels well stocked rather than muddy: dusty blue for one teacup set, warm brass for the cameras, a touch of red marker on a ribbon or price tag’s edge for a cheerful spark. Keep the background behind the stall loose and undetailed so the objects stay the clear focus.

Palette: Cerulean Blue,Yellow Ochre,Burnt Umber,Cadmium Red

A jogger and her spaniel on a misty path along the Serpentine gives you movement to capture with just a few confident lines. Draw the jogger first as a simple lean figure mid-stride, one arm bent, then add the spaniel just ahead on a loose leash line, its ears drawn as soft curved shapes mid-bounce.

Keep both figures slightly blurred at their trailing edges, a few quick extra pencil lines behind the back leg or ear, which reads as motion far more convincingly than a sharp, static outline would. The misty path behind them should fade into pale grey within a short distance, so do not draw detail too far into the background.

Wash the jogger’s clothing in one or two simple colors, the spaniel in warm golden brown, and let the mist itself be mostly untouched pale paper with just a faint grey wash at the horizon. A damp brush dragged across the background wash while still wet softens any hard edges into that misty feel.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey,Cerulean Blue,Naples Yellow

A holly wreath on the painted door of a narrowboat brings the canal theme back for a smaller, quieter close to the sketchbook. Draw the boat door first as a simple rectangle with a rounded top, then add the wreath as a ring of small overlapping leaf shapes with a few tight red berry clusters tucked among them.

Once this wreath sits easily on the page, vary it next time by trying it on a different surface: paint the same ring of leaves and berries on a cottage door instead, or hang it from a lamp post rather than a boat, which keeps the subject fresh across a few pages without starting from scratch each time.

Wash the door in a bold painted color typical of canal boats, deep green or red or blue, then keep the wreath itself in two simple tones: dark green leaves and bright red marker berries, the one true accent color of the whole small scene. A thin gold ribbon line around the wreath, drawn last, pulls the whole shape together.

Palette: Sap Green,Cadmium Red,Prussian Blue,Yellow Ochre

Save a quiet closing page for a black umbrella and a paper map lying on a wet bench in a garden square. Draw the bench first as a simple set of horizontal slats on two curved legs, then lay the closed umbrella diagonally across it with the map half unfolded beside it, corners curling slightly from the damp.

Wet surfaces are the one hands-on trick worth practicing here: paint the bench and map with a flat base wash, then while it is still damp, lift color out along a few streaks with a dry brush or tissue to leave pale highlight lines where water would pool or reflect light. This lifting technique does more to suggest wetness than any amount of added dark shadow.

Keep the umbrella in solid black with just one sliver of pale reflected highlight along its curve, and let the map stay mostly cream and white, its lines kept loose and unreadable. A single red leaf fallen onto the bench ties the page to the rest of this sketchbook’s palette.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever of these london drawing sketches matches your mood today, whether that is a quiet teapot still life or the busier jumble of an antiques stall, and start with a light pencil sketch before the fineliner goes anywhere near the page. A cream-paper sketchbook, your fineliner and a small travel watercolor set are all you need to finish one before the kettle boils.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to start london drawing sketches on location?

A fineliner pen, a small travel watercolor set and a cream-paper sketchbook cover most of these pages. Keep the kit light since you will likely be standing, sitting on a bench or balancing on your knee most of the time.

How do I draw london drawing sketches without copying a photo exactly?

Simplify every subject into two or three basic shapes before adding any detail. Working from a quick thumbnail sketch first, then building the final page from that simplified version, keeps the drawing loose rather than a tight copy.

How long should each london drawing sketch take?

Most of these pages finish in fifteen to forty minutes once the ink is dry and the washes are set. The quicker ones, like the rainy bus window or the fish and chips, work well as warm-ups before a longer sketch.

What if I cannot draw London from life?

Reference photos of canal boats, markets or rooftops work just as well as being there in person. Focus on the shapes, light direction and color notes described in each idea rather than copying every detail of a photo.

How do I keep these sketchbook pages looking cohesive as a set?

Stick to one consistent approach across the book: the same fineliner weight, a similar light watercolor palette and red marker used sparingly as an accent throughout. That shared thread ties very different subjects into one sketchbook.
