31 Christmas Scene Drawing Ideas With Snowy Streets and Warm Windows

Christmas scene drawing works best when you pick one small place and give it one strong light source, not a whole busy town. Every idea below is a single setting, a window, a doorway, a lantern, so you can block it in, lay the color, and finish before the light outside your own window changes.

Each scene pairs a warm yellow glow against cool blue snow, the pairing that makes these drawings read as night scenes at a glance. The list moves from the simplest streetlamp to a full station hall, so pick whichever matches the time you actually have today.

Corner Streetlamp In Falling Snow

This is the simplest setting in the list, one curved lamp post and a pool of light on the snow below it. Block in the post with a few straight and curved lines, then build the glow with pale yellow in the center and a ring of orange around the lamp glass.

Lay the snow in with light blue and violet, pressing harder close to the lamp where the light warms it. Use a white pencil for the falling flakes last, scattered unevenly so they do not look like a grid. The common mistake is making the lamp glow pure white, which flattens it against the paper.

Mailbox With Lantern And Snow Cap

A tilted mailbox with a thick cap of snow and a small lantern hooked to its post makes an easy, charming focal point. Start with the box as a simple rectangle on a post, then pile soft curved lines of white and pale blue on top for the snow.

Color the lantern glass with yellow at the center and a thin orange ring, letting the light spill onto the snow directly beneath it in a soft warm patch. Keep the background simple, just a fence or a few bare branches. Avoid outlining the mailbox too hard, since a soft edge reads as snow-covered metal better than a crisp one.

Bakery Window At Dusk

A bakery window packed with loaves, pies, and a string of lights gives plenty of warm detail without needing a whole street. Sketch the window frame first, then fill the glass with soft round and oval shapes for the bread and pastries before adding any color.

Layer yellow and light orange across the whole window first, then add the darker shapes of the baked goods on top so the glow still shows through. Shade the brick or wood around the frame in cooler tones so the warmth of the window reads by contrast. The usual mistake is coloring the window last, which buries the glow under too much detail. For more ideas built the same way, the pencil Christmas drawing ideas page has a full set of single-subject scenes.

Candy Shop Window

Jars of striped candy and a few hanging candy canes fill this window with color and give an easy reason to practice warm layering. Draw the window as a grid of simple jar shapes, round and rectangular, before any shading goes in.

Fill the glass behind the jars with yellow first, then build the stripes on the candy with red and white last so they sit on top of the glow instead of competing with it. Snow on the windowsill stays pale blue with a touch of violet in the shadowed side. Keep the stripes loose rather than perfectly even, since a slightly wobbly line looks more hand drawn.

Cabin With Chimney Smoke

A log cabin with one lit window and a thin curl of smoke is one of the most forgiving scenes to draw, since the shapes are all simple rectangles and logs. Block in the cabin as a box with a triangular roof, then add horizontal lines for the logs before any color.

Color the single window yellow with a soft orange edge, and let that light spread a little onto the snow just below the sill. Smoke goes in last with a light gray pencil, drawn as a loose wavy line rather than a solid shape. Snow on the roof and ground stays blue and violet in the shadows, white only where the light actually hits.

Farmhouse Porch With Wreath

A wide porch with a round wreath on the door and a string of lights along the railing gives a wider scene without much extra difficulty. Start with the porch as a simple box with posts, then place the wreath as one circle on the door before adding any greenery texture.

Color the wreath with layered dark and medium green, then add small red dots for berries last. Light the porch with a warm yellow wash from the doorway, fading into the blue snow on the steps. The common error is making every porch light the same brightness, so pick one as the brightest point and let the rest sit dimmer.

Toy Shop Window Display

A window full of wooden toys, a rocking horse, and a train set gives a busy focal point that still fits in one sitting if the shapes stay simple. Block in three or four toy silhouettes first, keeping them loosely drawn rather than detailed.

Wash the whole window in yellow before adding any toy colors, so the glow sits underneath everything else. Add red, green, and brown to the toys next, then finish with a thin white pencil line along the window frame to suggest frost. Snow on the sidewalk in front stays cool blue so the warm window reads clearly by contrast.

Covered Bridge In Snow

A short wooden covered bridge with snow piled along its roofline makes a simple structural scene with one warm lantern inside the opening. Draw the bridge as a long rectangle with a peaked roof, keeping the perspective flat rather than steep.

Shade the wood in warm browns, then add a soft yellow glow just inside the bridge opening where a lantern would hang. Snow goes on the roof and the riverbank in blue and white, with the darkest blue in the shadow under the bridge. Readers who want more structures to practice after this one can look at the village scene drawing pencil ideas for other small buildings.

Barn With Hanging Lights

An old barn with a string of warm lights along the eaves and a sleigh parked outside gives a rural scene that still has one clear glow point. Block in the barn as a simple gable shape, then sketch the lights as a loose scalloped line before coloring.

Color each light bulb with a small dot of yellow or orange, then add the barn wood in red-brown and the roof in gray-blue under a layer of white snow. Keep the lights slightly irregular in spacing, since perfectly even dots look printed rather than drawn. The snow in the yard stays cool blue with violet shadows under the eaves.

Church With Stained Glass Glow

A small stone church with one tall stained glass window gives a chance to practice warm color inside a cool structure. Draw the window shape first, divided into a few simple panel sections, before any stone detail goes in.

Fill the panels with warm yellow, orange, and a little red, blending softly so the colors bleed into each other like real glass. Shade the stone walls in gray and blue-violet, keeping them much cooler than the window so the glow stands out. Snow on the steps and roof stays pale, with the darkest blue reserved for the shadow beneath the overhang.

Small Chapel With Bell Tower

A narrow chapel with a single bell tower and one lit window at its base is a quick vertical composition that still reads as a full scene. Block in the tower first as a tall thin rectangle, then add the small window near the bottom.

Color the window with a warm yellow center, keeping the glow small since the building itself is small. Shade the tower in cool gray-blue, with the snow on its roof left almost white at the peak and darker blue where it meets the stone. The common mistake is making the tower too wide, which loses the quiet, narrow feel that makes this scene work.

Fire Station With Wreath

A fire station with a big door, a wreath hung above it, and a warm light over the entrance is an easy way to draw a public building without too much detail. Block in the door as a large rectangle first, then place the wreath as a circle centered above it.

Color the entrance light with yellow and orange, letting it pool on the pavement just outside the door in a soft warm patch. Keep the brick or stone walls cool and muted so the door stands out as the clear focal point. Snow along the curb stays blue, with a few white pencil flecks added last for texture.

Diner Window With Neon Sign

A roadside diner with a glowing neon sign and a row of window lights gives a different kind of warm glow than a simple lantern. Draw the building as a long low rectangle, then place the sign shape before adding any lettering or color.

Color the sign with pink or red over a yellow base so it reads as lit rather than flat, and repeat a softer version of that warmth in the window glass. Snow on the parking lot stays blue-gray, with the reflections of the sign colors added faintly into the snow near the building. Keep the neon color brighter than every other warm tone so it reads as the true light source.

Post Office Window With Parcels

A post office window stacked with wrapped parcels and a hanging light above the counter gives a cozy commercial scene with plenty of small color shapes. Block in the window frame and a simple stack of box shapes before adding ribbon or string details.

Wash the window in warm yellow first, then color each parcel in a different muted tone so they read as separate gifts rather than one block. Add the snow outside the window in cool blue, keeping the ledge where snow has piled nearly white. The frequent mistake here is making every parcel too bright, which competes with the window glow instead of sitting inside it.

Greenhouse Glowing With String Lights

A glass greenhouse strung with small lights and filled with the shadows of plants makes an unusual focal point that still uses the same warm and cool approach. Draw the greenhouse frame as a simple peaked structure first, then add a scattering of small light dots along the ridge.

Color the glass panels with a soft yellow wash, adding faint green and brown shapes behind it to suggest plants without drawing them in detail. Snow on the glass roof stays pale blue in patches, left thinner near the ridge where warmth from inside would melt it. Keep the light dots varied in size so the string reads as real wire rather than a straight row.

Lighthouse In Snow

A lighthouse with its beam lit against a dark winter sky gives a tall, simple silhouette with one strong warm point. Block in the tower as a tapered cylinder shape, then add the lantern room at the top before any shading.

Color the lantern room with yellow and a touch of white at the core, and let a soft cone of light fade outward into the dark sky above the snow. Keep the tower itself in cool gray-blue, with snow drifted against its base in white and pale blue. The background sky can stay a deep blue-violet so the beam has something dark to glow against.

Bookshop Window With Lit Tree

A small bookshop window with a decorated tree inside and stacks of books on the sill gives a layered scene with warm light at its center. Block in the window frame, then sketch the tree as a simple triangle shape with a star on top before adding any ornaments.

Color the tree lights first in yellow, scattered unevenly through the branches, then add a few ornaments in red and gold on top. Wash the rest of the window glass in a softer yellow so the tree glows brighter than its surroundings. Snow on the windowsill and the street below stays blue, giving the warm interior somewhere cool to sit against.

Gingerbread House Shop Window

A shop window built around a gingerbread house display gives a playful subject with a lot of small warm color notes. Draw the gingerbread house as simple geometric shapes first, roof and walls, before adding any icing detail.

Color the house in warm brown, then add white icing lines and small candy shapes in red and green once the base color is dry. Light the whole display with a yellow wash behind it, as if a bulb sits just out of view. Keep the icing lines slightly uneven, since perfectly straight piping looks less like candy and more like a ruler was used.

Row Of City Apartment Windows

A row of apartment windows at night, some lit and some dark, gives a wider city scene built from a repeating simple shape. Block in the building as a tall rectangle divided into a grid of equal window squares.

Color only some of the windows in warm yellow and orange, leaving the rest a flat cool gray-blue so the lit ones stand out clearly. Vary the warmth slightly from window to window, some more orange, some more pale yellow, so the row does not look mechanical. Snow on window ledges and a rooftop line at the top of the frame stays white and pale blue.

Victorian Townhouse Row

A row of narrow Victorian townhouses with bay windows and a shared strip of snow out front makes a slightly more detailed street scene. Block in each house as a tall thin rectangle with a slightly different roofline, so the row does not repeat exactly.

Color one or two of the bay windows with a warm yellow glow and leave the others darker, picking a single house as the clear focal point of the row. Shade the brick or painted fronts in muted, cooler colors so the lit window reads instantly. The Christmas sketching ideas for beginners page has more street-level scenes if this one works well for you.

Mountain Chalet With Skis

A wooden chalet with skis leaning against the porch and a single lit window gives an alpine setting without needing a full mountain range. Block in the chalet as a simple box with a steep peaked roof, then add the skis as two long diagonal lines near the door.

Color the window with a warm yellow glow and the wood siding in brown, keeping the roof in cool blue-gray under a thick layer of white snow. Add a few pine trees nearby using simple triangle shapes shaded in dark green. The steep roof is the part most likely to go wrong, so keep the angle gentle rather than exaggerating the peak.

Frozen Lake Dock And Boathouse

A small dock and boathouse at the edge of a frozen lake gives a quiet scene with a single warm light reflected faintly on the ice. Block in the boathouse as a simple rectangle on posts, then add the dock as a few straight lines leading out onto the ice.

Color the boathouse window with yellow, then add a soft smear of the same yellow onto the ice below it to suggest a reflection. Keep the ice itself pale blue and white, with a few thin gray lines for cracks. The background hills can stay a flat, simple blue-violet so they do not pull attention from the dock.

Snow Covered Observatory Dome

A small round observatory dome with a lit window at its base is an easy way to draw something a little different while keeping the same light and snow rules. Block in the dome as a half circle on top of a short cylinder, then add the small window near the ground.

Color the window warm yellow, keeping the glow tight and small compared to the size of the dome. Shade the dome itself in cool gray and blue, leaving a highlight where the strongest light would catch the curve. Snow piled around the base stays white and pale blue, with the darkest shadow sitting directly under the curve of the dome.

Ice Rink With Warming Hut

A small ice rink with a warming hut at its edge gives a scene with both a cool wide surface and one warm focal point. Block in the rink as a simple oval or rectangle first, then add the hut as a small box just beside it.

Color the hut window with yellow and orange, letting a little of that warmth reflect onto the ice nearest the hut. Keep the rest of the ice in pale blue and white, using a few curved gray lines to suggest skate marks. Figures on the ice can stay as simple colored shapes rather than detailed people, since the hut is the real focal point here.

Toy Train Set In Shop Window

A shop window built entirely around a toy train set circling a small tree gives a scene with a lot of small warm details in one frame. Block in the window frame first, then sketch the train track as a simple oval with the train and tree sitting inside it.

Color the train in bright red and green, then add small yellow dots for its headlights and for lights strung on the tree. Wash the rest of the window in a soft yellow glow so the whole display looks lit from within. Snow on the windowsill and the glass itself can carry a few faint white pencil streaks to suggest frost without hiding the display.

Horse Drawn Sleigh In The Square

A horse-drawn sleigh waiting in a small town square, lit by one nearby lamp, adds a figure and an animal shape without making the scene complicated. Block in the horse and sleigh as simple rounded shapes first, keeping details like harness and reins minimal.

Color the lamp beside the sleigh in warm yellow, letting that light touch the top of the horse and the edge of the sleigh closest to it. Keep the rest of the horse and sleigh in cooler, muted tones so the lit side reads clearly. Snow in the square stays blue and white, packed down in places with a few gray tones to suggest footprints and sleigh tracks.

Village Square With Lit Tree

A central square with one large decorated tree and a few shop fronts around it gives a wider scene while still keeping one clear focal point. Block in the tree first as a tall triangle, then sketch the surrounding buildings as simple low rectangles behind it.

Color the tree lights in yellow scattered through the branches, then add a few ornaments in red and gold once the lights are in place. Wash the shop windows behind the tree in a softer yellow so the tree still reads as the brightest point in the scene. Snow across the square stays blue, with the areas closest to the tree carrying a faint warm tint where the light spills onto it.

Christmas Market Stall

A small wooden market stall selling ornaments or warm drinks, lit by a string of bulbs along its roofline, gives a scene full of small color and texture. Block in the stall as a simple box with a peaked or flat roof, then add the string of lights along the front edge.

Color each light bulb individually in yellow and orange before filling in the goods on the stall table in a few bright accent colors. Keep the background simple, just a suggestion of other stalls or a tree, so the lit stall stays the clear focal point. Snow on the ground in front of the stall stays blue, with footprints in gray breaking up the flat color.

Harbor With Fishing Boats

A small harbor with a few fishing boats and a row of lit windows along the waterfront gives a coastal version of the same warm and cool approach. Block in the boats as simple curved hull shapes first, then add the waterfront buildings as low rectangles behind them.

Color a few of the waterfront windows warm yellow, letting a little of that light streak down onto the dark water in short reflected lines. Keep the water itself in deep blue and gray-violet, calmer near the boats and a little more textured further out. Snow along the dock edges stays pale blue and white, kept thin since harbor towns rarely hold deep drifts.

Train Station Platform In Snow

A train platform with a waiting lantern, a bench, and snow collecting along the tracks gives a quiet scene with strong perspective lines. Block in the platform and tracks first using simple straight lines that lead the eye toward the back of the scene.

Color the station lantern in warm yellow and orange, letting its light fall across the nearest section of platform and bench. Keep the tracks and distant background in cool gray and blue, with snow built up along the rails in white and pale blue. The most common mistake is making the perspective lines too steep, which pushes the platform out of proportion with the lantern and bench.

Grand Train Station Hall Interior

A large station hall with tall arched windows, a big clock, and scattered warm lamps is the most involved scene in this list, suited to a reader ready for more detail in one sitting. Block in the hall as a wide space with a few simple arches and a large circle for the clock before adding any figures or lamps.

Color the arched windows with a pale, cool light since daylight or dusk shows through them, then add the real warmth through the hanging lamps scattered around the hall. Keep travelers and benches as simple colored shapes rather than detailed figures, so the architecture and the lamps stay the focus. What to Do Next

Pick one scene that matches the time available today, start with the warm window or lantern first so the glow sets the mood for the rest of the drawing, then block in the snow last in cool blue and violet. A smooth sheet of bristol or drawing paper holds the layered color well for any christmas scene drawing on this list, from the simplest streetlamp to the full station hall.

Frequently Asked Questions

What colored pencils work best for a christmas scene drawing like this?

Wax-based colored pencils blend most easily for the warm glow and cool snow in a christmas scene drawing. Oil-based pencils work too and hold a point longer for the small window details, so either set works as long as it includes a true yellow, orange, and a few blues and violets.

How do you make snow look blue instead of white?

Leave the paper or a light white layer for the brightest snow, then add pale blue and violet into every shadow and dip. Snow is rarely pure white in real light, it picks up the color of the sky and anything glowing nearby, so blue in the shadows makes it read correctly.

How do you get a warm window glow without it looking flat?

Layer at least two colors, a pale yellow center and a thin orange or red-orange ring around it, rather than one flat yellow block. Let that warmth fade gradually into the surrounding snow or wall color instead of stopping at a hard edge, so the light looks like it is spilling rather than painted on.

What paper should beginners use for colored pencil scenes?

A smooth to lightly textured drawing paper or bristol paper works best, since it holds several layers of color without the tooth wearing down too fast. Very rough watercolor paper fights colored pencil and makes small details like window frames harder to control.

How do you keep one of these scenes from taking all day?

Pick a scene from the easier end of the list, keep the background simple, and build the color in two or three layers rather than endless small strokes. A single clear focal point, like one lit window, finishes faster than a scene trying to light several spots at once.
