A girl illustration built around one small errand gives you a complete outfit, a bit of weather and a reason for her to be standing just so, all in a single gouache sitting. Every idea below pairs a winter coat or knit with a specific outing: posting letters, buying tulips, hauling grocery bags with leeks poking out the top. That small story is what makes the pose, the palette and the pet or prop choose themselves.
You will find 33 of these scenes here, ordered so the simpler silhouettes come first and the busier compositions (skis, strollers, a tray of coffees) come later. Work through them in any order you like: pick whichever errand matches the mood you are in today, mix flat gouache shapes with crisp edges, and let the coat do most of the talking.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start with the easiest silhouette on this list: a girl in a cherry red puffer coat, walking her dog through snow. Block the coat first as one rounded puffy shape in cherry red gouache, then add the dog as a simpler shape on a leash line that connects the two figures and anchors the composition.
Paint the snow ground as a flat oatmeal or icy blue shape before you add either figure, so you are placing the coat on top of a finished background rather than painting around it later. Keep the face simple: two small marks for eyes, a short line for a smile, nothing more.
If the puffer coat looks flat and shiny rather than padded, add two or three curved seam lines in a slightly darker red once the base coat is dry. This single trick reads as quilted fabric without any extra blending.
Swap a leash-and-dog pairing for a simple bag in her other hand if you would rather skip the dog shape today, and keep everything else the same.
Palette: Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown,Icy Blue,Oatmeal
Move from a dog to a different kind of load: a girl carrying grocery bags with leeks poking out the top. Paint the two paper bags as simple trapezoid shapes first, oatmeal or kraft colored, then add two or three leek stalks poking out at slightly different heights so the cluster reads as real produce rather than a bundle of identical sticks.
Compare the bag height to her torso before you commit to ink: the bags should sit roughly from hip to chest, not swallow her whole body. That one proportion check keeps the whole figure believable.
Paint her coat next, something plain like oatmeal or chocolate brown so the leeks and bags stay the visual interest of the piece. Finish with a short scarf tail and simple boots.
If leeks feel fiddly, a baguette poking out the top works as an easy swap and paints in two strokes.
Palette: Kraft Oatmeal,Moss Green,Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red
Give the composition some stillness: a girl in a long plaid coat waiting for a tram. Build the coat’s plaid as a flat base color first, let it dry completely, then lay thin crossing lines over it in a second and third color. Painting the grid on top of a dry flat shape is what keeps the plaid crisp instead of muddy.
Place her at eye level with a hint of a tram pole or a sliver of track line beside her feet. That single small prop tells the whole story of waiting without needing any background detail.
A relaxed standing pose, weight on one hip, one hand in a pocket, reads as “waiting” far better than a straight-on stance. Keep her face calm rather than smiling broadly.
If plaid lines wobble, a ruler edge for the straight strokes saves the look without slowing you down much.
You Will Need
- ruler for straight plaid lines
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Oatmeal,Icy Blue
Bring in the first real head covering of the set: a girl in a knit balaclava buying flowers from a stall. Paint the balaclava as one continuous oatmeal or moss green shape that covers head, neck and shoulders, leaving only an oval for the face. This is where beginners often add a separate hat and scarf by habit; resist that and keep it one piece.
Think about where the light sits before you paint the flower stall beside her: if the light comes from the upper left, the stall’s awning shadow falls to the lower right, and her balaclava gets a soft shaded edge on its right side too. Keeping light direction consistent between figure and prop is what sells the scene.
Paint a small bunch of three or four flowers in her hands last, in cherry red or icy blue, so they pop against the cream background.
Swap the balaclava for a simple knit scarf wrap if the shape feels unfamiliar; it covers the same storytelling ground.
Palette: Moss Green,Cherry Red,Oatmeal,Chocolate Brown
Look at knit hat and hat drawing references if the balaclava shape feels unfamiliar: the same rounded dome and rib texture tricks work here.
Try a quieter errand: a girl posting letters at a red mailbox in the snow. Paint the mailbox first as a simple rounded rectangle in cherry red, since it anchors the whole composition and everything else is scaled against it. It should sit roughly chest height on her.
Paint her coat and a small stack of two or three envelopes in her raised hand next. Keep the envelopes plain white or oatmeal rectangles; detail here competes with the red mailbox for attention and the mailbox should win.
Where this goes wrong is proportion: if the mailbox ends up too small, it reads as a toy rather than a street fixture. Hold your brush up against the reference sketch and compare mailbox height to her hip height before you paint it in gouache.
If you want a quicker version, skip the envelopes altogether and just show her hand resting on the mailbox slot, done in under ten minutes.
Palette: Cherry Red,Icy Blue,Oatmeal,Chocolate Brown
Move to a trickier balancing act: a girl carrying a cardboard tray of coffees for her friends. Paint the tray first as a simple flat rectangle with three or four cup shapes rising from it, each cup topped with a small lid line. Keeping the cups slightly different heights stops the row from looking stamped out with a ruler.
For the ten minute version, paint just the tray and cups with a plain coat and skip any background detail. For the fuller forty minute version, add steam lines rising from one cup and a cafe sleeve pattern on another, which gives the eye somewhere extra to land.
Hold the tray at a slight downward tilt in her arms rather than perfectly level: that small angle is what makes it read as something carried rather than something floating.
Chocolate brown or oatmeal keeps the coat from fighting with the red cup sleeves for attention.
If you enjoy this errand, the coffee illustration list has more cafe scenes built the same way.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Oatmeal,Cherry Red,Icy Blue
Shift the scene indoors: a girl trying on winter boots in a shoe shop. Paint her seated pose first, knees bent, one boot already on and one bare foot still reaching for its pair on the floor beside her. This small gesture is what makes the scene read as a shop rather than just a girl standing around.
Where beginners lose this one is the seated proportions: measure her thigh length against her shin length before committing to ink, since a chair pose foreshortens the legs more than a standing one.
Paint a simple shoebox or two beside her feet in oatmeal, with the lid tipped at an angle rather than perfectly flat, which adds a bit of casual mess to the scene.
If a full seated pose feels tricky today, paint her standing and admiring one boot held up in her hand instead; same errand, simpler pose.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Oatmeal,Icy Blue,Cherry Red
Bring in a second dog, this time with a very different silhouette: a girl in earmuffs walking a dachshund in a tiny coat. Paint the dachshund’s long low body first as a single stretched oval, then add the short legs, since getting that body length right before the legs go on is what keeps the proportions from drifting into a different breed entirely.
Her earmuffs paint easily as two small circles joined by a thin curved band over the head shape; keep them a size that could plausibly sit over real ears, not oversized like a cartoon.
Give the dachshund’s tiny coat a different color from her own coat, cherry red against her chocolate brown works well, so the two shapes separate clearly even at a small scanning size on a phone screen.
If the long dog body feels tricky to get right, a shorter-bodied dog breed is an easy swap that keeps the same earmuffs-and-leash idea.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Icy Blue,Oatmeal
More dog poses and coat ideas live in the dog illustration list if you want to practice the long low body shape further.
Turn to a quieter prop: a girl carrying a potted plant home in her arms. Paint the pot first as a simple terracotta or oatmeal cylinder, then build the plant above it from a handful of larger leaf shapes rather than many small fussy ones. A few confident leaf shapes read better at a glance than a crowd of tiny ones.
Her arms wrap around the pot from underneath, elbows bent close to her body, which is the pose detail that makes the weight of the pot believable. Skip showing her hands in detail if that feels fiddly; a sleeve covering most of the grip works fine.
Moss green carries the whole plant shape, with maybe one leaf in a slightly lighter green to add a touch of variation without overworking it.
Once this pose feels comfortable, try it again later with a different plant, a tall snake plant leaf shape instead of a rounded one changes the whole silhouette.
Palette: Moss Green,Chocolate Brown,Oatmeal,Cherry Red
Add motion to the page: a girl on a bicycle with a basket of tulips in light snow. Paint the bicycle frame first as a few simple connecting lines and two wheel circles, kept loose rather than mechanically precise, since a slightly wobbly bike frame actually reads as more charming in this flat gouache style.
Where the eye naturally lands first on this composition is the tulip basket, so paint it with the most saturated color on the page, cherry red tulip heads against a woven oatmeal basket shape, and let her coat stay a calmer color so it does not compete.
Tilt her slightly forward over the handlebars rather than sitting bolt upright; that lean is what makes the bike look like it is actually moving rather than parked.
Scatter a few small white snowflake dots over the finished scene last, once all the gouache underneath is fully dry, to keep them crisp rather than smeared.
Palette: Cherry Red,Oatmeal,Icy Blue,Chocolate Brown
Bring back a market setting with a different coat texture: a girl in a chocolate brown teddy coat at a farmers market. Paint the coat’s base shape flat first, then stipple small dabs of a slightly lighter brown over it with the tip of a dry brush once the base is dry. That dry brush dabbing is what reads as fuzzy teddy texture instead of flat fabric.
Behind her, a simple market stall shape with two or three rounded vegetable or fruit forms gives the scene its setting without needing a full background. Keep those shapes simple circles and ovals in moss green and oatmeal.
If the texture dabbing gets messy, a clean flat coat shape with just a few curved seam lines is a fine fallback that still reads as “teddy coat” through its rounded, bulky silhouette alone.
Finish with a small cloth tote bag over one shoulder to complete the market errand.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Moss Green,Oatmeal,Cherry Red
Give the composition a bit of architecture: a girl with shopping bags crossing a snowy crosswalk. Paint the crosswalk stripes first as flat icy blue or oatmeal bands across the bottom of the page, since placing her feet on top of already-finished stripes is far easier than painting stripes around a finished figure.
From eye level low on the page looking slightly up at her, the crosswalk stripes recede and narrow toward the top, which gives the whole piece a sense of street depth without drawing a single building. Keep that perspective simple: just a few converging lines, nothing more technical.
Her shopping bags swing slightly forward from her stride rather than hanging straight down, which sells the sense of movement across the crossing.
If perspective lines feel like too much today, a flat frontal crosswalk with even stripes still reads fine and keeps the focus on her coat.
Palette: Icy Blue,Oatmeal,Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown
Try a domestic twist on the sled scene: a girl pulling a little sled loaded with laundry. Paint the sled first as a simple flat wooden shape with curved runners, then pile a few folded fabric shapes on top in oatmeal and icy blue, kept as simple rectangles rather than wrinkled detail.
Compare the sled’s length to her leg length before you paint the rope connecting them: a sled that is too long for her stride will look like it belongs to someone else entirely. A short sled pulled on a taut diagonal rope reads best.
Lean her whole body slightly forward against the pull of the rope, since that forward lean is the single detail that makes the sled feel loaded and heavy rather than empty and gliding freely.
Swap the laundry pile for a stack of wrapped parcels if you would rather paint a delivery errand instead; the sled and rope stay exactly the same.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Oatmeal,Icy Blue,Cherry Red
Take on a bigger prop: a girl in an apres-ski outfit with skis balanced on her shoulder. Paint the two skis first as long thin parallel shapes, angled diagonally across the page rather than straight up, since a diagonal is far easier to balance visually against her standing pose than a vertical line splitting the composition in half.
Her outfit can carry the boldest color combination on this list: a cherry red one piece suit or a chocolate brown quilted jacket against icy blue snow pants, since apres-ski style leans toward bright matching sets rather than muted layers.
Where this goes wrong is the shoulder angle: if the skis sit flat across both shoulders rather than resting diagonally on one, the pose looks stiff. Tilt one shoulder slightly up to support the ski weight.
If two full length skis feel like a lot to fit on the page, crop them off the top edge of the composition and only show the lower portion resting against her side.
Palette: Cherry Red,Icy Blue,Chocolate Brown,Oatmeal
Settle into a calmer errand: a girl holding a library tote full of books in the snow. Paint the tote bag first as a simple flat rectangle shape, then stack three or four book spines inside it at slightly different heights, each a plain rectangle in a different muted color. Varying those heights slightly is what keeps the stack from looking like a single painted block.
Keep her pose relaxed, tote hanging from a bent elbow rather than gripped in a fist, since a gently swinging bag reads as a casual outing rather than a heavy chore.
If you want a quick ten minute version, paint just the tote and three book spines with a plain coat and skip any snow detail. The forty minute version adds a scarf pattern and a light dusting of falling snowflakes around her.
Chocolate brown or oatmeal book spines keep the palette calm so the cherry red strap or lining can still stand out.
Palette: Oatmeal,Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Icy Blue
Give her a bit of physical effort: a girl shoveling snow from her front steps. Paint the shovel first as a simple flat triangle blade on a straight handle, angled low toward the ground, since that low angle is what communicates the digging motion before you even add her pose around it.
Bend her knees slightly and tip her torso forward over the shovel handle, rather than painting her standing upright holding it at her side. That forward bend is the one pose detail that sells physical work rather than a static prop display.
Paint a small pile of shoveled snow already heaped beside the steps in icy blue or white, which gives the scene a sense of progress rather than a job just started.
If a full shoveling pose feels too complex today, paint her leaning on the shovel handle taking a short break instead; same prop, a much easier stance.
Palette: Icy Blue,Chocolate Brown,Oatmeal,Cherry Red
Turn her into the observer for once: a girl photographing a snowy street with a film camera. Paint the camera first as a simple small box shape with a round lens circle, held up close to her face rather than at chest height, since that raised position is what makes it clear she is actually looking through it.
From her eye level, she is likely looking slightly downward or straight ahead at street level rather than up, so keep whatever background hint you add, a lamppost sliver or a rooftop edge, simple and low in the frame rather than towering overhead.
One elbow lifts higher than the other to support the camera, which breaks the pose out of a flat symmetrical stance and adds a little visual interest.
If the raised camera pose feels tricky, paint the camera hanging from a neck strap instead while she looks around her, a calmer version of the same idea.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Icy Blue,Oatmeal,Cherry Red
Bring in a street food cart: a girl buying roasted chestnuts from a street cart. Paint the cart first as a simple boxy shape with a small curved roof, then add a handful of chestnut dots clustered inside a paper cone in her hand. A handful of dots, not dozens, keeps the cone readable at a glance.
Steam or smoke rising from the cart in a soft wavy line adds warmth to the whole scene and is worth the extra few minutes if you are doing the fuller version; the quick ten minute version can skip it entirely and still work.
Chocolate brown carries both the cart wood and the chestnuts themselves, so let her coat be a contrasting color, icy blue or cherry red, so the cart does not disappear into the same tone as everything around it.
If a full cart feels like too much structure, just paint the paper cone of chestnuts in her hands and crop the cart out of frame entirely.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Icy Blue,Oatmeal,Cherry Red
Trade the dog for a different pet: a girl in a burgundy beanie carrying her cat in a carrier. Paint the carrier first as a simple boxy shape with a mesh window, then add the cat’s face peeking through, just two eyes and a small triangle nose, kept minimal so it reads clearly at a small scanning size.
Her beanie paints as one rounded shape with a small folded brim line and an optional pom pom on top; keep the pom pom a slightly lighter shade of the same color so it reads as texture rather than a separate object stuck on.
Carry the carrier with both hands at waist height rather than swinging from one hand, since a two handed grip reads as careful handling of a nervous pet.
If a full face peeking through mesh feels fiddly, a solid carrier with just two glowing eye dots in the shadowed opening works just as well and paints faster.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Oatmeal,Cherry Red,Icy Blue
For more cat poses once this one feels comfortable, the cat illustration list has plenty of cozy winter variations.
Give her an active morning errand: a girl carrying a yoga mat on a snowy morning. Paint the rolled mat first as a simple long cylinder shape slung diagonally across her back or tucked under one arm, since the diagonal strap line is what keeps this prop from looking like a plain stick.
Keep her outfit practical rather than fully bundled, a cropped puffer over leggings works well, since the point of this scene is the contrast between light athletic wear and a cold snowy morning.
Where beginners lose this pose is arm placement: if both arms hang straight down, the mat looks glued on rather than carried. Bend the supporting arm slightly to cradle the mat’s weight.
If a full rolled mat feels tricky to shape, a mat bag with just a visible strap and rolled top edge reads just as clearly and simplifies the shape considerably.
Palette: Icy Blue,Chocolate Brown,Oatmeal,Moss Green
Return to a quieter waiting pose: a girl at a bus stop with a big tote and headphones. Paint the headphones first as two simple rounded shapes connected by a thin curved band over her head, since getting that band shape right early keeps the whole head silhouette reading correctly once the hair and hat go in around it.
Her big tote bag hangs from one shoulder, painted as a soft rounded rectangle rather than a stiff box shape, which suggests a slouchy fabric bag rather than a structured one.
A simple bus stop sign post beside her, just a thin vertical line topped with a small rectangle, is enough background to place the scene without needing a full street.
If headphones feel fussy to paint small, a knit headband is an easy swap that covers the ears in a similar way.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Oatmeal,Cherry Red,Icy Blue
Bring the scene indoors to a craft store: a girl in a shearling jacket picking out yarn at a craft store. Paint the shearling jacket’s collar first as a soft fluffy edge using small dry brush dabs around the collar line, then fill the rest of the jacket as a flatter solid shape so the texture stays concentrated where it matters most.
Behind her, paint two or three yarn skeins as simple rounded ball shapes in a shelf display, in moss green and cherry red, kept as a small cluster rather than a crowded wall of color.
Hold one yarn skein up near her face in her hand, as if comparing colors, which gives the pose a clear moment of decision rather than a generic standing figure.
If the full craft store shelf feels like too much detail, crop it down to just the one skein in her hand against a plain background.
The knitting drawing list has more yarn and knitting scenes if this one is fun to paint.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Moss Green,Cherry Red,Oatmeal
Return to a dog, but tucked away this time: a girl with a puppy tucked inside her coat. Paint her coat first as one large closed shape, then cut a small gap near the chest where the puppy’s head pokes out, painted as a simple round shape with two small ears and a dot nose.
Keep the puppy’s proportions genuinely small against her coat, roughly the size of her hand, since a puppy that is too large will fight the coat shape for attention and read as an odd lump rather than a tucked away pet.
One hand cups gently under the coat opening to support the puppy’s weight, which is the small gesture that makes the tucking believable rather than just decorative.
If painting a peeking puppy head feels tricky, a simple pair of ears poking over the coat collar is an easier version that still tells the same story.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Oatmeal,Cherry Red,Icy Blue
Add a burst of playful motion: a girl in a white puffer and mittens throwing a snowball. Paint her coat as a rounded puffy shape in white or the lightest oatmeal in your palette, since this is one of the few ideas on this list that needs a pale coat rather than a saturated one, and the contrast against the cream background will come mostly from the line work and shadow.
Bend one arm back mid throw and extend the other forward for balance, since that asymmetrical arm placement is what reads as motion rather than a static pose holding a ball.
Paint the snowball itself as a simple round icy blue white shape with a soft shadow underneath, held just before release in her raised hand.
If a dynamic throwing pose feels ambitious today, paint her crouched packing the snowball in both hands instead, a calmer moment in the same little scene.
Palette: Oatmeal,Icy Blue,Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red
Bring back the cafe setting with a different interaction: a girl picking up her coffee at a walk-up window. Paint the window first as a simple flat rectangle with a small counter ledge, then add her hand reaching up to take the cup, fingers wrapped loosely around a single cup rather than gripping it tightly.
A small awning shape above the window, painted in cherry red or chocolate brown, gives the scene its setting and casts a simple flat shadow line across the top of the window frame.
Where this scene can go flat is scale: keep the window counter at roughly chest height on her so the proportions between figure and architecture stay believable, rather than a window that looms too large or sits too low.
If painting a full window feels like a lot of structure, crop in close on just her hand and the cup against a plain color block for the background.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Oatmeal,Icy Blue
Give her a different kind of takeout: a girl carrying a pizza box home through the snow. Paint the box first as a simple flat square balanced on both open palms, held at roughly waist height, since that two handed balance is what keeps a flat box shape from looking like it is about to slide off her arms.
Keep the box plain oatmeal or chocolate brown rather than decorated with a logo, which fits the flat graphic style of this whole set better than fussy lettering would.
Lean her torso slightly back from the box’s weight rather than hunching forward over it, since pizza boxes are carried level and light, a different balance than the heavier sled or shovel scenes elsewhere on this list.
If you want a quicker version, crop the scene to just her hands and the box against a plain background and skip the full figure and snow setting.
Palette: Oatmeal,Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Icy Blue
Add a touch of celebration: a girl in a sage green coat carrying a cake box tied with string. Paint the box first as a simple flat rectangle, then add a thin string line wrapped around it with a small bow or knot on top, which is the one detail that instantly reads as “bakery box” rather than any plain parcel.
This is the idea to use the moss green accent color as the whole coat rather than a small touch, since the brief holds it back everywhere else; let it carry the full figure here and balance it against a cherry red string or ribbon.
Hold the box level with both hands underneath it, since cake boxes get carried carefully and flat, unlike a swinging grocery bag.
If tying a string bow feels fiddly at small scale, a single ribbon strip across the top without a knot still reads clearly as a bakery box.
Palette: Moss Green,Cherry Red,Oatmeal,Chocolate Brown
Bring in a pair of dogs with matching outfits: a girl walking two greyhounds in matching sweaters. Paint each greyhound’s long lean body as a tall narrow S curve shape first, since greyhounds have a very different silhouette from most dog breeds and getting that curve right before adding legs keeps the breed recognizable.
Dress both dogs in the same sweater color and pattern, icy blue works nicely against the cream background, since matching sweaters is the charming detail that makes this scene distinct from a generic two dog walk.
Hold both leashes in one hand with a slight gap between the two dogs rather than walking them perfectly side by side, which adds a natural sense of movement and keeps the composition from feeling too symmetrical.
If two full dog bodies feel ambitious, paint one greyhound fully and let the second peek in only partially from the edge of the frame.
Palette: Icy Blue,Chocolate Brown,Oatmeal,Cherry Red
Add a glamorous texture: a girl in a faux fur coat at a skating rink entrance. Paint the coat’s base shape flat first in chocolate brown or oatmeal, then once dry, stipple the whole surface with small irregular dabs of a lighter shade using a dry, barely loaded brush. That dry dabbing across the entire coat, not just the edges, is what sells faux fur rather than a plain fuzzy collar alone.
Behind her, a simple curved rink boundary line and a sliver of ice in icy blue is enough setting to place the scene without painting the whole rink in detail.
Skates slung over one shoulder by their laces, rather than already worn, keeps the pose at the entrance moment rather than mid skate, which matches the errand framing of this whole list.
If the full fur texture feels time consuming, concentrate the dabbing only around the collar and cuffs and leave the rest of the coat flat.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Icy Blue,Oatmeal,Cherry Red
Give the composition a bit more structure: a girl pushing a stroller through a snowy park. Paint the stroller frame first as a simple geometric shape, wheels as circles and the body as a rounded rectangle, kept flat and graphic rather than mechanically detailed, which matches the rest of this set’s style.
Angle the stroller slightly away from straight-on, three quarter rather than full profile, since that small angle gives the composition more depth than a flat side view would and makes the pushing motion clearer.
A simple row of three bare tree shapes behind her, just trunk and a few branch lines, is enough to establish “park” without painting a whole winter landscape. Keep them spaced unevenly so they do not look stamped from a single template.
If a full stroller feels complex to construct, simplify it down to a basic pram silhouette with no visible wheel spokes, which paints just as convincingly at this scale.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Oatmeal,Icy Blue,Moss Green
Return to flowers with a seasonal twist: a girl with a bunch of mimosa at a February flower market. Paint the mimosa’s small yellow puff clusters first as tiny rounded dabs grouped along a few curved stems, kept to a handful of clusters rather than dozens of tiny dots, which keeps the bouquet readable rather than a smudge of yellow.
Her coat can stay neutral, oatmeal or chocolate brown, so the mimosa yellow has the whole page to itself as the one bright accent note, a nice contrast to the cherry red and icy blue used more often elsewhere on this list.
Hold the bunch loosely against her chest with the stems wrapped in a simple paper cone, which is a market detail that instantly reads as “fresh from a stall” rather than a florist’s arrangement.
If tiny yellow puffs feel fiddly, simplify them into a handful of small round dots on each stem rather than fluffy clusters.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Oatmeal,Moss Green,Cherry Red
Give her a neighborly errand: a girl dropping off a casserole at a neighbor’s door. Paint the casserole dish first as a simple oval shape with a lid, held out in both hands in front of her, slightly tilted toward the viewer so the top surface is visible rather than hidden flat.
A simple door shape beside her, just a rectangle with a small knob and maybe a wreath circle, is enough setting to place the scene at a doorstep without painting a full house facade.
Keep her stance slightly leaning forward, as if just about to knock or already mid-knock with one knuckle raised, which gives the moment a sense of action rather than just standing and holding a dish.
If a full doorway feels like too much background, crop in tighter on just her and the dish and let the cream background stand in for the rest of the scene.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Oatmeal,Moss Green,Cherry Red
Close the set on a cheerful note: a girl in snow boots stomping through slush with a smile. Paint her boots first, planted wide apart mid stomp, with a small splash shape rising from underneath one boot, painted in icy blue with a few loose flicked dabs rather than a solid puddle shape.
Her whole pose should lean into exaggeration here more than anywhere else on this list: arms slightly out for balance, shoulders lifted, a genuinely open smile rather than the calmer neutral expressions used in the quieter errand scenes earlier.
If flicking a convincing splash feels tricky with a brush, try loading an old toothbrush lightly with icy blue gouache and flicking the bristles with a thumb for a scatter of small droplet marks around the boot.
Finish with her coat in whatever color from this set you have used least so far, which is a nice way to round out a full page of these girl illustration scenes with some palette variety.

What to Do Next
Pick whichever outfit and errand catches your eye first and paint it on a single sheet of bristol board today, start with the coat as one flat shape, then build the prop and pose around it. Once one feels finished, the next idea on the list is already half planned by the one before it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What gouache colors work best for a winter girl illustration series like this one?
A small limited palette works best: chocolate brown, cherry red, icy blue and oatmeal, with one accent like moss green used sparingly. Mixing from just these keeps every piece feeling part of the same set.
How do you keep gouache edges crisp instead of fuzzy in a flat illustration style?
Let each shape dry fully before painting the next one beside or on top of it. Working wet into dry, rather than wet into wet, is what keeps flat shapes from bleeding into each other at the edges.
What paper should a beginner use for gouache fashion illustration?
Smooth bristol board or hot press illustration paper works best, since it keeps flat gouache shapes even without the texture of rough watercolor paper showing through.
How do you make a girl illustration look modern rather than old fashioned?
Simplify the figure into flat graphic shapes with crisp edges rather than soft shading, keep the palette to a handful of colors, and give her a specific small action or errand instead of a static standing pose.
Do these girl illustration ideas work in other mediums besides gouache?
Yes, the same poses and errands translate well to colored pencil, markers or acrylic, though gouache’s flat matte finish is what gives this particular set its modern print look.
