Ski drawing has a whole mood to it before you even pick up a brush: cherry red cable cars, cream sweaters, and that particular blue of a sky above a snowy ridge. This list leans into skiing as a lifestyle rather than a sport, so you get chairlifts, lodge fires and cocoa on a terrace as often as anyone actually carving down a slope.
Every idea below works as a flat gouache shape painting, built from simple blocks of color with crisp edges, the kind of look that reads instantly as a retro travel poster. Scroll through and pick whichever one matches your mood today, from a quick lodge doorway to a full alpine village scene.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start with the chair itself: a simple red bar shape sitting low in the frame, angled slightly so the whole thing feels like it is swinging gently forward. Block in the girl as a few flat shapes, a cream coat, a dark knit hat, and let her skis hang straight down below the chair in two thin parallel lines.
Paint the snowy pines behind her as simple triangular blocks of two greens, darker where they overlap, lighter where they catch the sky. The place this goes wrong is the cable: keep it as one thin confident line in dark brown, painted last with a steady hand rather than built up in strokes.
If your brush is too wide for the cable, switch to a fine liner brush or even a toothpick dipped in paint for that one line. Measure the chair against the pines first: if the chair looks too big for the trees behind it the whole scene reads as flat rather than floating.
Keep the sky one flat wash of sky blue painted first, so everything else sits cleanly on top of it.
Palette: Cherry Red,Sky Blue,Pine Green,Cream
This one leans fully into the poster idea, so plan it like a travel print: a big diagonal slope of white cutting the page in half, a confident skier in a red suit carving across it, and a flat sky filling the rest. Lay the sky in first, then the slope shape, then the skier last so her edges stay crisp against both.
Eye level matters here: set it low, almost at slope height, so the skier reads as cutting across your view rather than being watched from above. That low angle is what makes retro ski posters feel dynamic instead of flat.
Paint her spray of snow as a few curved cream shapes trailing from her skis, not a scatter of dots. If the slope and the snow spray end up the same shade of white, the spray disappears, so mix a slightly warmer cream for the spray and keep the slope a cooler white.
No red gouache on hand: a strong orange-red mix from red and a touch of yellow carries the same poster punch.
Palette: Cherry Red,Sky Blue,Snow White,Chocolate Brown
Look at a few vintage ski travel posters for how far they simplify the mountain line into two or three clean diagonals before you paint yours.
Cocoa scenes are forgiving and fast, which makes this a good one if you want something finished quickly. Paint the mug first as a simple rounded cream shape, then the swirl of whipped cream on top as one soft curved blob, and let a thin brown line suggest a drizzle across it.
Set the mug on a plain wooden railing or table edge, just a flat brown strip across the lower third, with the rest of the page given over to sky blue and a hint of white mountain behind. The usual mistake is making the whipped cream too fussy with lots of small peaks; one or two confident curves reads cleaner in flat gouache.
For the quick version, stop once the mug, cream and drizzle are dry and call it done in under ten minutes. For the fuller version, add a second mug slightly behind the first, a pair of sunglasses resting beside it, and a soft shadow under both.
No whipped cream experience needed: practice the swirl shape first on scrap paper until one brushstroke does it.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Sky Blue,White
Following on from one girl on a chair, this version doubles the fun with two friends side by side, laughing, in matching knit headbands. Block in the chair bar first, then the two figures as simple overlapping shapes, keeping one slightly forward of the other so they do not read as a flat row.
Compare their heights and shoulders before you commit to paint: friends sitting together usually sit at slightly different heights depending on how they lean, and that small variation is what sells the laugh rather than a stiff pose.
Paint the headbands in matching cherry red with a simple pattern of two or three dashes, nothing more detailed. If the two figures start blending into one shape, give one a cream coat and the other a soft blue one so the silhouette separates clearly.
Swap the headband color for whatever you have mixed already; matching accessories read fine in any one bright color as long as both friends wear it.
Palette: Cherry Red,Cream,Sky Blue,Chocolate Brown
Move from people to place with a simple lodge exterior. Paint the building as a few flat shapes, a brown wooden wall, a pitched roof topped with a thick white snow line, and one small window glowing warm. Add the door last, slightly darker brown, with a simple frame.
Line the skis up leaning against the wall beside the door, four or five pairs in slightly different colors so the row has rhythm rather than repetition. The easy mistake is making every pair identical; stagger their heights and tilt a couple at a slightly different angle.
Keep the snow on the ground as one flat cream shape with a soft blue shadow along the base of the building, since shadows on snow read cooler and bluer than the snow itself. That one shadow shape does more to ground the lodge than any amount of detail on the wood grain.
If your readers enjoy this kind of cozy exterior, the village drawing ideas collection has more shopfront and lane scenes in the same spirit.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Sky Blue,Window Gold
This quiet moment works well as a simple figure study against a big view. Paint her from behind or in three-quarter view, leaning gently on her poles, cream sweater and red hat, so her stillness contrasts with the open mountain beyond.
Set the horizon line low, well below her waist, so the whole upper two-thirds of the page becomes layered mountain ridges in pale blue and white. That low horizon is what gives the sense of standing at the top looking out, rather than looking across at a flat scene.
Layer the distant peaks in two or three flattened shapes, palest blue furthest back, slightly warmer cream-white closer in. The common slip is making every ridge the same value, which flattens the distance; keep contrast building toward the front.
No poles in your reference: two simple diagonal lines angled into the snow read clearly enough without more detail.
Palette: Cream,Cherry Red,Pale Blue,Chocolate Brown
Give the gondola its own moment here, floating alone against the sky with a snowy valley far below. Paint the cabin as a simple rounded red shape with one flat window, then the cable as two thin lines running off either edge of the page.
Place the cabin a little above center, with the valley floor shrinking to simple pale shapes far beneath it, so the eye reads real height even though nothing else moves. The mistake to watch for is painting the valley too large and detailed, which pulls the eye away from the cabin; keep it as soft, simplified far-off shapes.
Add one or two tiny dark pine shapes scattered on the valley floor for scale, nothing more. A single warm red cabin against a cool blue sky and pale valley is the whole composition, so resist adding more than that one strong shape.
If you want more scenes that pair a bold red vehicle against sky and snow, the alpine cable car idea further down uses the same trick.
Palette: Cherry Red,Sky Blue,Pale Valley,Chocolate Brown
Bring the scene indoors for a cozy fireside corner: a stone hearth, a pair of ski boots set to dry nearby, and a dog curled asleep on a rug. Block in the fire first as warm flat shapes of orange and red, then the stone hearth around it in simple gray blocks.
Paint the boots as two simple dark shapes standing upright a little distance from the flames, never right beside them. Place the dog as one soft curled cream or brown shape on a rug, eyes closed, a simple loaf shape with no more than an ear and a tail tip for detail.
The place this scene tends to go wrong is overworking the fire; two or three flat flame shapes read warmer than many small detailed ones. Keep the room dim around the edges with a deeper brown wash so the fire glow reads as the brightest part of the page.
No dog reference handy: a sleeping cat curled the same way works just as well in this scene.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Fire Orange,Cream,Stone Gray
This is the big poster piece of the set, so give it space: a cluster of simple chalet roofs down low, a steep white mountain rising behind, and a red cable car crossing the middle distance on its line. Build it in layers, sky first, mountain second, village third, cable car last so it sits crisply on top of everything.
Keep every chalet roof the same simple triangle shape at slightly different sizes, since repetition of a simple shape is what makes a village read as a village rather than a jumble of buildings. Use two or three roof colors at most.
The cable car here is small, so paint it as one confident red rectangle with a thin line beneath for the cable, rather than trying to add windows or detail at that scale. If it disappears against the mountain, outline it faintly in brown to separate the shapes.
Keep the whole piece to four colors total and it will hold together as a proper poster rather than a busy scene.
Palette: Cherry Red,Sky Blue,Mountain White,Chocolate Brown
After the grand poster view, bring it back to a small human moment: a beginner girl on a gentle slope, skis angled into a snowplow shape, laughing as she goes. Paint her skis first as two triangular shapes meeting at the tip, wider apart at the back, which is the easy visual cue for snowplowing.
Block her in as a simple cream coat and dark hat, arms slightly out for balance, mouth open in a laugh rather than a straight line. Keep the slope gentle, just a soft diagonal rather than a steep poster slope, so the scene reads as easy and fun rather than dramatic.
The usual slip with a laughing face at this scale is overworking the features; one curved line for the smile and two dots for eyes says more than careful shading ever will. If the skis look too straight, angle them slightly inward at the tip and the plow shape clicks into place.
If you enjoy drawing figures like this one, girl pencil drawing ideas has more simple poses to borrow from.
Palette: Cream,Cherry Red,Sky Blue,Chocolate Brown
This one is all about speed and spray, so plan the composition around one strong diagonal line running from top left to bottom right. Paint the slope and sky first as two simple flat blocks, then the skier in a deep burgundy one-piece cutting across that diagonal, body leaning low into the turn.
Where the light sits matters here: imagine it coming from one side and keep the skier’s suit one flat shade with a single darker strip down the shaded side, rather than full shading. That one strip of shadow is enough to suggest form in flat gouache.
Paint the powder spray behind her skis as two or three curved cream shapes of different sizes, overlapping slightly, trailing off into nothing at the edges. If the spray looks too solid, thin the paint slightly for the outer shapes so they fade rather than stop abruptly.
No burgundy on your palette: mix cherry red with a touch of brown for the same deep warm tone.
Palette: Burgundy,Snow White,Sky Blue,Chocolate Brown
Zoom into a tabletop scene for this one: a simple fondue pot in the center, a loaf of bread beside it, and a pair of goggles pushed to one side. Paint the table surface first as a flat warm brown plane, then the pot as a rounded shape with a small flame glow beneath it.
Keep the goggles simple, two connected oval lenses in sky blue with a thin dark strap, set at a casual angle rather than lined up neatly, which makes the scene feel like a real pause in the day rather than a staged still life.
The common trouble spot is the fondue pot looking flat without the flame beneath it; even one small triangle of orange under the pot sells the warmth instantly. Add a second mug or a wedge of cheese beside the bread for the fuller forty-minute version.
No fondue pot reference: a small round pot of any kind, even a teapot shape, carries the same cozy table mood.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Sky Blue,Fire Orange
This is a satisfying one for pattern and repetition: a simple wooden rack outside a chalet wall, holding several pairs of vintage skis in different colors. Paint the wall and rack first as flat brown shapes, then build the skis one pair at a time, each a slightly different color so the row reads as a collection rather than a repeat.
Vary it next time by changing which colors dominate: try a version weighted toward cream and brown pairs for a quieter look, or one with every pair a bold color for a punchier poster feel. Either way keep the tips of the skis rounded and slightly splayed outward, which is the detail that makes them read as vintage wooden skis rather than modern ones.
The place this goes wrong is spacing; skis crowded too close together blur into one shape, so leave a visible sliver of wall between each pair. A small patch of snow at the base, painted last, grounds the whole rack.
Swap the chalet wall for a plain cream background if you want the skis to be the whole subject.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Sky Blue,Cream
Keep the proportions deliberately uneven here, since that is what makes the scene read as sweet rather than simply two skiers. Paint the parent first as the larger, taller shape, then the child smaller by roughly half, gripping the ends of the parent’s poles for balance.
Measure the child’s skis against the parent’s before painting them in: a small child’s skis should be noticeably shorter in proportion to their height than an adult pair, almost stubby, which instantly reads as a young beginner.
Keep both figures simple, flat coats in two different colors so they separate clearly, with the connecting poles as the one detail that ties them together as a pair. If the composition feels static, angle both figures slightly forward as if mid-step rather than standing straight.
No two-figure reference to hand: sketch the parent alone first, then add the child at roughly half the height before refining either shape.
Palette: Cream,Cherry Red,Sky Blue,Chocolate Brown
This scene trades the open slope for a quieter white forest, so plan the composition as vertical tree trunks framing one small gliding figure. Paint the trees first as simple dark trunk shapes with soft snow-laden branches, spaced unevenly so the forest feels natural rather than a repeated pattern.
Set the skier small within that frame, narrow skis, poles trailing, body leaning forward in the long low glide of cross-country style rather than the wider stance of downhill skiing. That narrower, more horizontal pose is the detail that separates this from every other skier in the set.
The usual mistake is making the trees too uniform in color, which flattens the depth; keep nearer trunks darker brown and further ones softer, cooler brown so the forest recedes properly. A pale blue-white ground ties the whole scene together.
No forest reference: three or four simple trunk shapes at varied heights and spacing read convincingly enough without more detail.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Pale Blue,Cream,Sky Blue
Switch the mood again with this one: a woman stretched out in a deck chair right on the snow, goggles pushed up on her forehead, sunglasses underneath, clearly enjoying the sun rather than the skiing. Paint the chair first as a simple striped frame, then her reclined shape resting across it.
Think about where the light sits before you paint her face: with the sun high and bright, keep her skin tone one flat warm shade with no heavy shadow, since the whole point of the scene is brightness rather than contrast.
Keep the snow around the chair a clean flat white-cream so it reads as snow rather than sand, which is the easy trap with any sunbathing pose; a sliver of pale blue mountain in the background confirms the setting immediately.
If you want the fuller version, add a small drink balanced on the arm of the chair and a pair of skis leaning nearby, unused.
Palette: Cream,Cherry Red,Skin Tone,Sky Blue
This is a simple transitional moment: two skiers walking side by side, skis balanced on their shoulders, heading toward a lift just out of frame. Paint their bodies first as upright walking shapes, one stride slightly ahead of the other, then add the skis as long diagonal lines resting across each shoulder.
The trick with skis on a shoulder is keeping both ends visible and at a believable angle, tilted slightly forward rather than straight up, which is what makes them read as carried rather than stuck on randomly. Keep the poles in the other hand as a simple vertical line each.
If the two figures look too identical, vary their coat colors and the tilt of their skis slightly so the pair feels like two different people walking together rather than one copied twice. A simple snowy path beneath them, just a flat pale strip, is all the ground this scene needs.
No second figure needed if you prefer: one walker with skis on the shoulder works just as well alone.
Palette: Cream,Cherry Red,Sky Blue,Chocolate Brown
Move the apres-ski mood indoors with a small group scene at a lodge bar: two or three friends in oversized knit sweaters, drinks in hand, caught mid-laugh. Paint the bar counter first as a simple warm wooden strip, then build each friend as an overlapping flat shape so the group reads as close together rather than lined up stiffly.
Give each sweater a different simple pattern, a few dashes, a chevron, a plain block color, so the three figures stay easy to tell apart even at this flat, simplified scale. Keep faces minimal, just enough for an open laughing mouth or a relaxed smile.
The spot this tends to go wrong is cluttering the bar with too many props; one or two simple mug or glass shapes between them is plenty. A warm glow behind the bar, a soft gold wash, finishes the cozy feeling without adding detail.
Fewer friends works too: even a single figure at the bar carries the same relaxed mood.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Cream,Window Gold
This scene is pure rhythm: one instructor out front and a short line of small children following behind, each a slightly smaller, simpler shape, like a row of ducklings on skis. Paint the instructor first, a clear confident pose, then repeat a simplified child shape three or four times behind, varying coat colors so the line does not blur into one block.
Compare each child’s size to the one in front before placing it: they should shrink only slightly and stay roughly the same size as each other, which is what sells the orderly single-file line rather than a random cluster.
Keep every child’s pose nearly identical, arms out for balance, skis parallel, since the charm of this scene is the repetition itself rather than individual detail. One instructor in a contrasting color at the front anchors the whole row.
Fewer children also works well if you want a simpler version: even two following the instructor reads as a lesson in progress.
Palette: Cherry Red,Cream,Sky Blue,Chocolate Brown
Pair a figure with a building for this second big poster piece: a woman skiing past a classic Swiss chalet, its carved wooden balcony and shuttered windows just visible as flat simplified shapes. Paint the chalet first, since it anchors the composition, then add the skier crossing in front of it at speed.
Keep the chalet’s detail reduced to two or three key shapes, a balcony line, a shuttered window, a pitched roof with snow along the ridge, rather than trying to render real carved woodwork. That reduction is exactly what keeps the poster look instead of tipping into a realistic illustration.
The skier should overlap the chalet slightly, crossing in front of one corner of the building, which creates depth and movement in an otherwise static structure. If the two elements feel disconnected, add one shared shadow shape beneath both on the snow.
This pairs well with the village drawing ideas list if you want more chalet and alpine building references.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Sky Blue,Cream
This is the fun, exaggerated moment of the set, so plan the pose first with a loose scribble before committing to paint: limbs splayed, one ski pointing up, the other sideways, body mid-tumble into a soft puff of snow. Block in the snow puff first as a rounded cream cloud shape around her, then add her figure on top.
For the quick ten-minute version, keep the tumble simple, just the figure and the snow puff with no added detail. For the fuller version, add small scattered snow flecks flying outward and a second ski tumbling separately a little distance away for extra chaos.
The common trap is making the pose too neat, which kills the comedy; push the limbs further apart and tilt the head than feels natural, since a tumble should look slightly ridiculous. Keep her expression cheerful rather than alarmed, a laugh rather than a grimace.
No confidence with wild poses yet: practice the tumble shape small in pencil a few times before painting it at full size.
Palette: Cream,Cherry Red,Sky Blue,Chocolate Brown
After a wild tumble, settle the page back down with a calm single subject: a ski patrol dog sitting upright in the snow, chest out, ears alert. Paint the body as one solid rounded shape first, a simple sitting silhouette, then add the head and ears on top, keeping the proportions sturdy rather than slender.
Give the dog a simple red vest or collar shape, just one flat rectangle across the chest, which instantly reads as a working dog without needing any text or badge detail. Keep the face minimal, two dot eyes and a simple nose, since too much facial detail pulls this toward a cartoon rather than a poster illustration.
The spot this usually goes wrong is the sitting pose looking flat from the front; angle the body slightly to one side so you can show a hint of the back leg tucked under, which gives it real weight in the snow.
Any sturdy dog breed shape works here, so use whichever simple silhouette you find easiest to paint confidently.
Palette: Cream,Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Sky Blue
Return to the chairlift for a quieter, more romantic version: a couple sitting close together, a snowy summit rising behind them rather than pines. Paint the chair and the two figures first as one connected shape, shoulders touching, then build the summit behind as a few simple layered white and pale blue peaks.
Keep the summit lower in value contrast than the figures so the eye goes to the couple first; a mountain painted too bright or detailed competes with them instead of supporting the moment. One soft cloud shape near the peak adds scale without extra work.
The easy mistake with two seated figures is making them perfectly symmetrical, which looks stiff; let one lean slightly into the other, one hand resting near the other’s, for warmth. A single cable line above ties the whole composition together.
No couple reference needed: paint one figure fully first, then mirror and adjust the second so they fit together naturally.
Palette: Cream,Cherry Red,Pale Blue,Chocolate Brown
Bring the food theme back with a simple cafe tabletop scene: a plate of waffles, a small jug of syrup, and through a window behind it, a glimpse of the slopes outside. Paint the window frame first as a simple rectangle, fill it with a flat view of blue sky and white slope, then build the table and plate in front.
Keep the waffles as a grid of simple squares on a round plate, with one or two curved syrup lines drizzled across rather than realistic texture, since flat gouache shapes read a grid pattern cleanly without extra work. A small dollop of cream on top finishes the plate.
The window view is what sells the setting, so keep it simple: one slope shape and one sky block is enough, no need to add skiers or detail inside such a small space. If the window feels empty, a single small pine shape in the distance fills it nicely.
This pairs naturally with the coffee illustration ideas list for more cafe window scenes.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Sky Blue,Window White
This is the most airborne subject of the set, so start with the arc: sketch a light curved line for the flight path before placing the skier on it, body slightly tucked, skis angled down behind. Paint the sky and slope first, then the jump mound as one small simple bump, and the skier last, floating clear above it.
The spray of snow kicked up from the jump should trail from the skis in a curved sweep rather than scattering in every direction, which keeps the whole shape readable as speed and lift rather than mess. Two or three overlapping cream shapes do the job.
The common mistake is placing the skier too low, which makes the jump look small and the flight unconvincing; leave real air between the skis and the mound below so the leap reads clearly. A small shadow shape on the snow beneath confirms the height.
No jump reference: picture a simple ramp shape, since the shape of the mound matters far less than the confident arc of the skier above it.
Palette: Sky Blue,Cream,Cherry Red,Chocolate Brown
This one is a still-life arrangement rather than a scene with figures, which makes it a good change of pace: a shop window display of wooden skis standing upright, a few folded knit sweaters, and maybe a pair of old leather boots. Paint the window frame first as a simple rectangle, then fill it from back to front, skis standing tallest at the back, sweaters folded in front.
Keep the sweaters as simple folded rectangles with one small pattern detail each, a stripe or a dot, rather than full knit texture, since flat gouache carries a folded sweater shape perfectly well without rendering every stitch. Vary their colors against the cream and brown woodwork for contrast.
The usual trap with window displays is cramming in too many objects; three or four well-placed items read as a charming vintage window, while too many turn it cluttered. One warm glow across the glass, a soft diagonal highlight, finishes the vintage shop feeling.
No wooden skis reference: two simple tapered brown shapes standing upright carry the idea clearly.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Cherry Red,Sky Blue
Bring the walking figure back into a village setting for this one: a woman in a cream sweater, skis balanced over one shoulder, strolling past a row of simple chalet fronts. Paint the village backdrop first as a loose row of simplified building shapes, then add her walking figure crossing in front, slightly off-center.
Vary it next time by changing the season of her outfit or the village style behind her, since this same walking pose works equally well against a lodge, a cable car station, or an open slope, which makes it a useful figure to practice and reuse. Keep her stride confident, one foot clearly forward.
The spot to watch is the ski balanced on her shoulder; it should angle slightly forward and up, never straight vertical, or the pose reads stiff rather than mid-stride. A simple scarf trailing slightly behind her adds a touch of movement.
No village backdrop wanted: she walks just as well in front of a plain cream background if you want the figure alone.
Palette: Cream,Chocolate Brown,Cherry Red,Sky Blue
This is a nice contrast to the chairlift scenes: two friends standing side by side, pulled up the slope together on a single T-bar rather than seated. Paint the bar itself first as a simple upside-down T shape on a thin pole, then add the two figures standing just in front of it, skis parallel, leaning back slightly into the pull.
Keep both figures’ knees slightly bent and their weight leaning back against the bar, which is the detail that makes a T-bar pose read correctly rather than looking like two people simply standing on skis. Their arms rest near the bar rather than gripping it tightly.
The common slip is making the pole behind them too thick or too short; keep it thin and let it run right off the top edge of the page, since on a real T-bar lift the pole disappears upward out of sight. A simple snowy track beneath their skis grounds the whole scene.
No second friend wanted: one figure alone on a T-bar works just as well, simply center the bar behind them instead.
Palette: Cream,Cherry Red,Sky Blue,Chocolate Brown
Shift the whole palette for this one: instead of sky blue and cream, build it around a soft pink and orange sunset with one small dark skier heading down the last slope of the day. Paint the sky first in a graded wash from warm pink at the horizon to deeper rose above, then the mountain silhouette as one flat dark shape against it.
Keep the skier tiny and simple, almost a single dark comma shape against the glowing slope, since at this scale the whole point is silhouette and mood rather than any figure detail. One thin line of ski tracks behind them is enough to show direction and speed.
The place this goes wrong is making the sunset too busy with clouds or stripes; two or three soft flat bands of color read far more calmly than a detailed sky. Keep the foreground slope a warm pink-tinted white to match the light rather than plain cream.
No pink gouache mixed yet: a little white into cherry red gets you there quickly, adjusted warmer or cooler as needed.
Palette: Sunset Pink,Rose,Chocolate Brown,Warm White
This still-life brings the whole trip indoors to a bed covered with the makings of a packing day: a folded sweater or two, goggles, a knit hat, maybe a pair of thick socks. Paint the bedspread first as one simple flat plane in a soft color, then build each item on top, overlapping slightly so the pile feels gathered rather than laid out in a grid.
Keep each object reduced to its simplest shape, a folded rectangle for the sweater, two connected ovals for the goggles, a rounded shape with a small pompom for the hat, since this whole scene depends on a handful of clean recognizable shapes rather than textured fabric.
The usual trap is cramming too many items onto the bed until the pile reads as clutter; four or five objects with breathing room between them keeps it a charming packing moment rather than a jumble. One item in cherry red among the creams and browns gives the eye somewhere to land first.
No real packing scene to reference: picture laying out tomorrow’s outfit, since the logic is the same.
Palette: Cream,Cherry Red,Sky Blue,Chocolate Brown
If you enjoy still-life groupings like this, the knitting drawing ideas list has more cozy folded-fabric subjects to practice the same flat shapes on.
Gather a small family on a simple wooden bench for a picnic break: two adults and a child, sandwiches and a thermos between them, skis resting nearby. Paint the bench first as one flat horizontal shape, then build the three figures sitting along it, the child smaller and centered between the two adults for a natural grouping.
Compare the child’s size to both adults as you place them, since a family group only reads correctly if that size difference is clear and consistent; a child painted too close to adult height loses the family feeling entirely.
Keep the picnic items simple, a few triangular sandwich shapes on a cloth, one thermos cup shape, nothing more detailed than that. A row of skis leaning against the bench end, rather than scattered around, keeps the composition tidy.
Fewer figures also works: two people on the bench carries the same cozy picnic feeling if a trio feels like too much for one sitting.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Cherry Red,Sky Blue
Finish the set with the liveliest scene of all: a small group of friends dancing together on a sunny terrace, still in their ski boots and big sweaters, clearly straight off the slopes. Paint the terrace floor and railing first as simple flat planes, then build each figure in an exaggerated dance pose, arms up, one leg kicked out, so the energy reads instantly.
Vary each figure’s pose and sweater color so the group feels spontaneous rather than choreographed; no two dancers should mirror each other exactly. Keep the heavy ski boots as simple rounded shapes at the base of each leg, a detail that ties the dancing clearly back to the ski day.
The common slip with group dance scenes is making every figure the same height and pose, which flattens the fun; stagger heights slightly and let one figure lean back further than the rest.
If you enjoyed painting friends together through this list, the BFF drawing ideas collection has more group poses worth trying next.

What to Do Next
Pick one scene that matches your mood today, sketch its main shapes lightly in pencil first, then block in color from the background forward so every edge stays clean. A smooth gouache pad and your four-color retro palette are all you need to finish one of these in a single sitting.
Frequently Asked Questions
What paint works best for a retro ski drawing like these?
Gouache works best for this retro poster look, since it dries matte and flat with none of the sheen or texture of watercolor or acrylic. Its opaque coverage also makes crisp, confident edges much easier to paint cleanly.
Do I need to know how to draw skiers accurately?
No, these scenes work best with simplified flat shapes rather than anatomical accuracy. Block figures in as a few confident shapes, cream coats, dark hats, angled skis, and the retro poster style forgives loose proportions easily.
How do I keep the edges so crisp and clean in gouache?
Let each shape dry fully before painting the next one beside it, and use a smaller brush to tidy any wobbly edge once dry. Thin the paint slightly less than you would for watercolor, since thicker gouache holds a sharper line.
What if I only have a basic set of paint colors?
Mix the whole retro palette from four tubes: a warm red, a sky blue, a cream or white, and a brown. Burgundy, rose and chocolate shades all come from adjusting how much white or brown you add to the red.
Which idea is easiest to start with as a beginner?
The lodge fireside or the cocoa on a terrace are the simplest starting points, since both rely on a few large, forgiving shapes. Save the poster scenes with mountains and buildings for once you feel steady with flat gouache shapes.
