A butterfly doodle is the perfect small project when you want something charming on the page without committing to a full illustration. Grab a black fineliner and let a little character wander in: a butterfly sipping juice through a straw, a caterpillar zipped into a sleeping bag, a sleepy wing-dreamer curled on a leaf.
Every idea below is one small moment you can finish in a few minutes, built from simple shapes and a couple of marker accents. Scroll through, pick whichever one makes you smile first, and let your pen go.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start where the fun is easiest to draw: a butterfly sipping juice through a straw from a flower cup. Draw a rounded flower bloom first, petals curved like a little bowl, then a thin bent straw rising out of the center toward a round butterfly head.
Build the butterfly body as a simple oval, add two big rounded wings on each side, and keep the straw the only straight line in the whole doodle so it reads clearly against all those curves. Ink the outlines last with your fineliner, once the pencil layout feels right.
If the straw ends up too thick, thin it with a quick line scraped along each edge rather than starting over. Color the flower cup in marigold and leave the wings open for a light lilac wash, just a corner or two.
Try this one first since its shapes are forgiving and the straw gives you an easy focal point to build confidence before trickier wing patterns.

Move from flowers to cozy with a caterpillar zipped into a sleeping bag cocoon, only its little face peeking out. Draw a long rounded cocoon shape first, like a soft sack, and add a wavy zipper line down the middle with short dashes for teeth.
Leave a small circle open at the top for the face, then draw two sleepy eyes and tiny antenna poking out beside it. The place this goes wrong is making the cocoon too stiff and straight, so round every edge and let the bottom sag slightly like real fabric would.
Shade the cocoon in lilac marker and add a marigold star or two nearby if you want a nighttime feel. No marker on hand means a light pencil shading works almost as well.
Draw the zipper curving gently rather than straight down, since a dead-straight line makes the whole cocoon look flat instead of soft.
Palette: Lilac,Dusty Lavender,Black
After two tiny scenes, give the butterfly a bigger prop: one with patterned wings resting on the rim of a mug. Draw the mug first as a simple cylinder with a curved handle, then perch the butterfly body right along the top edge so its legs tuck over the rim.
Sketch the wings as two symmetrical loops on each side, then fill them with a small repeating pattern, dots, stripes or little crescents, whichever feels fastest with your fineliner. A trick for getting both wings to match: draw the pattern on one wing fully before starting the other, using it as your reference instead of guessing twice.
Color the mug in marigold and leave the wing pattern in lilac outline only, so the eye has somewhere to rest. If your mug looks lopsided, lightly pencil a vertical centerline first and draw both sides from that guide.
Keep the wing pattern simple and repeated rather than different on every section, since that reads cleaner at doodle size.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Trace a small lid or coin to keep the mug’s rim perfectly round before you ink it, especially if ellipses usually give you trouble.
Give your caterpillar some mischief next: one munching a leaf into a heart shape as it eats. Draw a simple oval leaf first, then erase or ink around a heart-shaped bite taken from one side, leaving the leaf’s remaining edge looking naturally nibbled rather than cut with scissors.
Add the caterpillar’s round segmented body stretched along the leaf’s spine, with a tiny open mouth right at the bite mark so the action is obvious. Keep its legs as short simple lines underneath, no need for detail beyond that.
The heart shape sometimes comes out lopsided on the first try, so sketch it lightly in pencil first and nudge both lobes even before inking. Color the leaf in a soft lilac-green mix if you have it, or leave it white with just the caterpillar in marigold stripes.
Draw the bite marks uneven and irregular around the heart’s edge, since a perfectly smooth heart outline looks too deliberate for a nibbled leaf.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Here is where eye level starts to matter: a butterfly admiring its wings in a dewdrop mirror. Draw a large round dewdrop first, sitting low on a leaf tip, and place the butterfly just above it leaning slightly forward, as though looking down into the surface.
Inside the dewdrop, sketch a tiny mirrored echo of the wing pattern, smaller and slightly curved to suggest the dewdrop’s rounded surface bending the reflection. Keep the butterfly’s own head tilted down and its antennae drooping toward the drop so the whole pose reads as curious rather than static.
If the reflection looks too literal, blur it slightly with looser lines, since a dewdrop never gives a crisp mirror image. Color the drop in pale lilac with a tiny white highlight left blank, and keep the wings themselves in marigold for contrast.
Leave a small white gap unlined on the dewdrop’s edge, since that single highlight is what makes it read as glass rather than a plain circle.

Keep the fun going with a personality quirk: a butterfly with mismatched wings, one striped and one dotted. Draw the butterfly’s body and both wing outlines identically first, since the mismatch should live only in the pattern, not in the shape.
Fill one wing with simple horizontal stripes and the other with evenly spaced dots, keeping both patterns loose and a little playful rather than ruler-straight. A common slip here is making one wing noticeably bigger than the other by accident, so pencil both outlines from a single shared centerline before committing to ink.
Color the striped wing in marigold and the dotted one in lilac so the contrast reads clearly even at a glance. If stripes feel fiddly, swap them for simple scallops instead, easier to keep even along a curved wing edge.
Give the butterfly a slightly puzzled expression, since a raised eyebrow line or crossed eyes sells the joke of the mismatch far better than the pattern alone.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Let the story move forward with a butterfly stretching its wings after waking up from its cocoon. Draw the empty split cocoon shell first, a torn oval hanging from a twig, then place the butterfly just beside it with both wings spread wide in a satisfying full stretch.
Keep the wings slightly asymmetrical in this pose, one a touch higher than the other, since a fresh stretch rarely looks perfectly even and that small imbalance adds life to the drawing. Add a few small crease lines near the wing bases to suggest they are still unfurling.
If the stretch pose looks stiff, loosen the arm-like front legs into a gentle curve rather than straight lines jutting out. Color the empty cocoon shell in a faded lilac and the stretching wings in bright marigold for contrast between old and new.
Draw this one mid-morning in your mind’s eye, with the cocoon shell slightly torn and curling at the opening rather than a clean hole.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Bring in a dream bubble next: a sleepy caterpillar dreaming of itself with wings. Draw the caterpillar curled into a loose comma shape first, eyes closed, resting on a leaf, then add a round thought bubble above made of three or four small connecting circles leading up from its head.
Inside the bubble, sketch a tiny version of the same caterpillar but now with butterfly wings attached, smiling rather than sleeping, so the contrast between the two states tells the whole story without any words. Keep the dream version smaller and lighter in line weight so it clearly reads as imagined rather than real.
If the thought bubble circles come out uneven, that is fine, they look better slightly irregular and hand-drawn than perfectly round. Color the real caterpillar in marigold and the dreamed wings in lilac, keeping the bubble outline plain black.
Draw the dreaming caterpillar’s mouth as a small curved smile even with eyes shut, since that detail alone makes the sleep look peaceful rather than just closed eyes on a tube.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Give the butterfly a job for this one: carrying a tiny watering can to a flower. Draw the watering can first as a simple rounded shape with a thin curved spout and a small loop handle, then attach it to the butterfly’s front legs as though it is gripping the handle mid-flight.
Angle the watering can slightly forward and downward, with a few small droplet marks already falling from the spout toward a flower waiting below, so the whole scene reads as an action in progress rather than a static object. Keep the butterfly’s wings tilted back slightly to suggest forward motion.
If the can looks too heavy or oddly shaped, simplify it to a basic teapot silhouette, which reads just as clearly at this size. Color the can in marigold and let the falling water droplets stay unlined, just small open circles.
Add two or three droplet marks below the spout rather than one, since a single drop looks accidental while a few in a row clearly shows pouring.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Here is where symmetry really counts: a butterfly with heart-shaped wings floating upward. Draw one wing as a simple heart outline first, then flip or trace it lightly for the second so both sides match in size and curve, since lopsided hearts are the easiest thing to spot wrong in this whole doodle.
Keep the body small and simple between the two hearts, and add a few short floating lines or tiny dots trailing beneath the wings to suggest gentle upward drift rather than a fixed landing. Tilt the whole butterfly very slightly off the vertical axis so it does not look stiffly centered on the page.
If your hearts end up pointed and sharp, round the bottom tip slightly, since a soft heart reads friendlier than a sharp one at this small scale. Color both wings in solid lilac and let the floating trail marks stay marigold for a little spark of contrast.
Pencil a light vertical guideline down the center of the body before drawing either heart wing, and keep checking both sides against it as you ink.
Palette: Lilac,Marigold,Black
Slow the pace down with a butterfly asleep on a flower, wings folded like a closed book. Draw the flower first as a simple open bloom, then rest the butterfly’s body right in the center with both wings pressed flat together upright, like two pages meeting along a spine.
Keep the folded wings as one tall rounded shape rather than two separate ones, since from the side a sleeping butterfly’s wings read as a single closed form. Add closed eye lines and a little drool or sigh mark if you want extra charm.
If the folded wing shape looks too thin and flat, round out the top edge slightly so it has a gentle dome rather than a sharp peak. Color the flower petals in marigold and leave the folded wings in soft lilac, keeping the whole scene calm and low contrast.
This one works well paired with the butterfly template outline guides if you want a steady base shape to sleep your butterfly onto before adding the sleepy details.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Add a little comic motion next: a butterfly fanning a hot flower with its wings. Draw the flower first with a few small wavy heat lines rising from its petals, then place the butterfly just above it with both wings angled flat and slightly blurred at the edges to suggest fast fanning motion.
A few short curved motion lines trailing behind each wing sell the fanning action better than the wing shape alone, so do not skip them even if they feel extra. Keep the flower’s petals drooping slightly, as though wilting from heat, to make the butterfly’s effort feel necessary.
If the motion lines look messy, keep them short and parallel rather than crossing each other, since tidy short strokes read as speed more clearly than a scribble. Color the heat lines in marigold and the fanning wings in lilac so the two elements stay visually separate.
Draw the flower’s petals curling slightly downward rather than standing upright, since a wilted look makes the whole fanning joke land instantly.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Bring in some grace with a butterfly twirling on a petal like a ballerina. Draw a single large petal first as the stage, then place the butterfly standing on its tip with wings flared out to the sides in a wide spinning pose, one leg lifted slightly for balance.
Add a short curved motion line circling around the body to suggest the twirl, and tilt the head slightly to one side as dancers often do mid-spin. Keep the wing tips pointed outward rather than drooping, since lifted wing tips are what make the pose feel energetic instead of just standing.
If the balance looks off, widen the petal slightly at the base so the stage reads as stable even with the butterfly perched near its tip. Color the petal in marigold and the spinning wings in lilac, leaving the motion line unlined for lightness.
Give the twirl a single curved line trailing from one wingtip only, since motion lines on every edge can clutter a small doodle fast.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Keep the charm going with a butterfly playing peekaboo, wings held over its face. Draw the body and head first, then bring both wings forward and slightly overlapping right in front of the face, as though the butterfly just popped them up to hide.
Leave two small eye peeks visible just above the wing edge, that tiny detail is what makes the gesture read as playful rather than simply resting. Keep the wings rounded and soft rather than sharply folded, since a soft curve looks more like a cupped hand gesture.
If the hidden face looks confusing, add one eyebrow line peeking above the wing too, which clarifies the pose instantly without extra lines. Color the peeking wings in lilac and leave a small marigold highlight where the eyes show through.
Draw the two eyes at slightly different heights rather than perfectly level, since a tiny asymmetry here reads as a candid caught-you moment instead of a posed one.
Palette: Lilac,Marigold,Black
Take a break from invented scenes with a real species: a monarch butterfly with orange wings resting on a milkweed leaf. Draw the wing outline first as two large rounded triangles on each side, then add the signature black vein lines branching out from the body like a simple network, finishing with small white dots along the wing edges.
Keep the milkweed leaf long and narrow beneath the butterfly, with a simple central vein line and a gentle curve, since monarchs really do favor this exact plant and the detail adds a nice bit of accuracy. The place this goes wrong is overcrowding the vein pattern, so space the black lines generously rather than packing them tight.
Color the wings in marigold with black line details and leave small circles unlined near the edges for the white dots. If orange marker is unavailable, a warm yellow works nearly as well for this pattern.
Look at a real monarch photo for the vein branching if you want extra accuracy, since the pattern follows a fairly consistent fan shape from the body outward on both wings.
Palette: Marigold,Black,White
Stay with real species a moment longer for a swallowtail butterfly with simple black outlines and yellow wings. Draw the wing shape first with its signature pointed tail extensions trailing off the lower edge, since that tail shape is what instantly identifies a swallowtail against any other butterfly.
Keep the outline work genuinely simple here, just the wing silhouette and the tail points, with maybe one or two thin black stripe accents rather than a dense pattern, since the brief calls for ease at this stage. The tail points are the trickiest part, so draw them as two sweeping curved lines meeting at a soft point rather than a hard sharp angle, which is easier to ink cleanly in one stroke.
Color the wings in marigold yellow and keep the stripe accents in plain black, skipping lilac entirely on this one so the classic yellow and black combination stays recognizable. If yellow marker feels too bright, a paler cream works nearly as well.
Keep this one to ten minutes if you want a quick practice piece, just the outline and two stripes; add shading along the tail points and a few more stripe details if you want to spend closer to forty.
Palette: Marigold,Black
Return to invented whimsy with a butterfly with moon and star patterns on its wings, a nice companion to the real species just before it. Draw the wing outlines first as usual, then plan the pattern loosely in pencil: one crescent moon shape on the upper wing and a scatter of small stars across the lower wing, keeping the spacing uneven rather than gridded.
Ink the moon as a simple curved sliver and the stars as basic five-point shapes, small enough that they read as sprinkled rather than crowded. If the stars start looking too uniform, vary their size slightly, a couple bigger and a couple tiny, since real night skies never repeat a single star size.
Color the wing background in deep lilac and leave the moon and stars as white negative space, or fill them in marigold for a warmer glow instead. A plain white gel pen over inked lilac wings gives the same effect if you are working on toned paper.
Group the stars a little closer near the moon and scatter the rest farther out, since that small grouping trick makes a night sky pattern feel natural instead of evenly sprinkled.

Follow the night sky with something sunnier: a butterfly perched on a slice of orange, tasting it. Draw the orange slice first as a simple circle divided into wedge sections with a thin rind border, then perch the butterfly right at the slice’s edge with its proboscis, a thin curled line, reaching down into the juicy center.
Keep the wedge lines slightly uneven rather than perfectly even pie slices, since real citrus segments vary a bit in size and that imperfection makes the drawing feel more natural. The proboscis is the easy part to get wrong, so curl it gently rather than drawing it as a straight stick, since butterflies drink through a coiled tube, not a straw this time.
Color the orange slice in marigold with the rind left white or very pale, and keep the butterfly’s wings in lilac for contrast against all that warm color. If orange marker runs dry, a warm coral works just as well for the slice.
Leave a few small dots scattered across the orange’s surface for texture, since plain flat wedges look more like a drawing of a circle than real fruit.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Play with scale for this one: a tiny butterfly sitting on a huge sunflower. Draw the sunflower first and let it take up most of the space, a wide ring of marigold petals around a large seeded center drawn as a simple textured circle, then add the butterfly as a small figure perched right at the petal’s edge, deliberately tiny against all that bloom.
Keep the scale contrast obvious by making the butterfly no bigger than one single petal, since a butterfly that is too large ruins the whole joke of this idea. The sunflower center is the part most likely to look messy, so fill it with small repeated curved marks rather than random scribbles, which reads as seed texture without taking long to draw.
Color the petals in bold marigold and leave the seeded center in plain black and white texture marks, keeping the tiny butterfly in lilac so it still stands out despite its small size. If your sunflower petals come out uneven, that unevenness actually helps it look hand drawn rather than stamped.
Draw the seed center’s texture marks in loose spiraling rows rather than straight lines, since real sunflower seed heads follow a subtle spiral pattern that reads instantly even simplified.
Palette: Marigold,Black,Lilac
Look at a real sunflower photo for the seed spiral if you want the center to feel convincing, the spiral pattern reads clearly even at a simplified doodle scale.
Give the butterfly a sense of adventure with one wearing a tiny backpack, setting off on migration. Draw the body and wings first in a forward-leaning flight pose, then add a small rounded backpack strapped across its back with two thin strap lines crossing over the body.
Keep the backpack simple, just a rounded rectangle with one front pocket detail, since too much backpack detail competes with the wings for attention at this size. Angle the wings slightly back and the antennae forward, both small cues that suggest motion toward somewhere specific rather than just sitting still.
Color the backpack in marigold with a small lilac buckle detail, and keep the wings in a lighter lilac wash so the backpack pops as the main character detail. If you want this one to feel like the start of a longer story, this pairs naturally with other small wandering characters from the travel doodle list.
Tilt the whole butterfly at a slight diagonal across the page rather than drawing it flat and centered, since that small tilt alone suggests forward travel better than any added motion line.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Add some drama with a butterfly flapping hard against a gust of wind, cheeks puffed. Draw the body leaning forward at a strong angle first, wings pulled back and slightly bent as though pushing against resistance, then add a few long curved wind lines sweeping across the whole scene from one side.
Puff out the cheeks with two small round bumps on the face, and squint the eyes slightly, since that single expression change turns a simple flying pose into a struggling one instantly. Keep the wind lines flowing in one consistent direction across the page, never crossing each other, so the gust reads as a single gust rather than a swirl.
Color the wind lines in pale lilac and keep the straining wings in marigold for contrast against the cooler background lines. If the wind lines feel too busy, use just two or three long ones rather than filling the whole background.
Bend the wings slightly backward from the body rather than keeping them symmetrical and flat, since that bend is what sells the sense of pushing against real force.
Palette: Lilac,Marigold,Black
Switch back to the caterpillar for one hanging upside down from a twig, waving. Draw a short twig first across the top of the space, then attach the caterpillar’s rear segment to it with a tiny hook or loop, letting the rest of its long segmented body dangle straight down.
Keep the body genuinely vertical rather than curved, since the whole joke of hanging upside down depends on that straight downward line, with just the head segment turned slightly to face the viewer. Add one small front leg raised in a wave, clearly separate from the rest of its tucked-in legs.
Color the body in marigold with simple lilac segment dividing lines, and keep the twig in plain black and brown tones if you have them. If the hanging pose looks stiff, add a tiny curve right where the body meets the twig, suggesting the weight pulling it slightly.
Draw the face upside down relative to the body’s hanging direction, with the smile curving the opposite way it normally would, since that small flip is what makes the gravity joke read instantly.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Bring in a second character for a butterfly and a bee racing to the same flower. Draw the flower first as the shared finish line, then place both racers approaching from opposite sides, wings and body both angled forward in matching urgent poses so the competition reads clearly.
Keep the bee small and round with simple black and marigold stripe bands, and give the butterfly longer lilac wings stretched back in flight, so the two shapes stay visually distinct even moving at the same speed. A few short motion lines behind each racer sell the race without needing any extra context.
If both characters start looking too similar in size, make the bee noticeably rounder and smaller, since that contrast in body shape helps the eye separate them instantly. Color the bee’s stripes in marigold and black, and keep the butterfly’s wings in lilac so the palette splits cleanly between the two.
Angle both racers toward the same point on the flower rather than side by side facing forward, since that converging angle is what makes the race destination obvious.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Bring things down to ground level with a butterfly with folded wings drinking from a puddle. Draw a small irregular puddle shape first, flat and low on the page, then place the butterfly standing right at its edge with wings held upright and folded together, proboscis curling down to touch the water’s surface.
Keep the puddle’s edge uneven and slightly reflective, a few short curved lines inside it suggesting a ripple where the proboscis touches down. The folded wing shape is the trickiest part, so draw it as one tall rounded form rather than two separate halves, the same trick used for the sleeping butterfly earlier in this list.
Color the puddle in pale lilac with a thin marigold outline catching the light at its edge, and keep the folded wings in a slightly deeper lilac so they read against the pale water. If you want a quicker version, skip the ripple detail entirely and just show the proboscis touching the surface.
Add one small ripple ring right where the proboscis meets the water, since that tiny detail turns a flat puddle shape into something with real surface and depth.
Palette: Lilac,Marigold,Black
Take the wing pattern idea further with a butterfly with wings like a stained-glass window. Draw the wing outlines first, then divide each wing into several irregular sections with thick black lines, similar to lead cames in a real window, keeping the sections varied in size rather than a uniform grid.
Fill each section with a different solid color from your available markers, alternating lilac and marigold across neighboring panels so no two touching sections match, which is exactly how real stained glass avoids blending shapes together. The dividing lines are what sells the whole effect, so keep them notably thicker than your usual outline weight.
If the sections start looking too even and tidy, break a few lines at odd angles instead of neat straight divisions, since stained glass patterns are rarely symmetrical. This pairs well with the layered patience of filling in the butterfly coloring pages if you enjoy this kind of slow panel by panel coloring.
Keep one small section in each wing uncolored, left white, since a tiny gap of plain paper among all that color actually makes the stained glass read as glowing rather than flat.
Palette: Lilac,Marigold,Black
Give the butterfly a prop again for one holding a single flower petal like a fan. Draw one large curved petal first, held in the butterfly’s front legs angled slightly in front of its face, as though fanning itself in warm weather.
Keep the petal’s curve gentle and the butterfly’s own wings relaxed and slightly drooped, a pose that reads as cooling off rather than flying energetically. Add a tiny motion curve just at the petal’s edge if you want a hint that it is actually being waved rather than simply held still.
If the grip on the petal looks awkward, simplify the front legs to two short curved lines meeting at the petal’s base, since overly detailed legs rarely add anything at this scale. Color the fanning petal in marigold and the relaxed wings in a soft lilac for a cooler, calmer palette overall.
Draw the butterfly’s eyes slightly closed or half-lidded rather than wide open, since that small change makes the fanning gesture feel like genuine relief from heat.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Build on the earlier mismatch idea with two butterflies comparing their matching wing patterns. Draw both butterflies facing each other first, bodies angled slightly toward the center, then give both the exact same wing pattern, say simple polka dots, so the comparison reads as a happy coincidence rather than a contest.
Keep both butterflies the same size and pose, mirrored roughly left and right, since any obvious size difference undercuts the joke of them being delighted twins. Add small raised antennae or a surprised expression on both to suggest they just noticed the match.
If drawing the same pattern twice feels repetitive, that repetition is actually the point here, so lean into it rather than varying the dots between them. Color one butterfly’s dots in marigold and the other’s in lilac so they are still visually distinct despite the matching pattern shape.
Face both butterflies toward each other at a slight angle rather than straight profile, since that small turn makes the moment feel like a real exchange instead of two separate drawings placed side by side.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Return to the caterpillar for a greedy little moment: one with cheeks stuffed full of leaf. Draw the body first in its usual segmented tube shape, then puff out the head segment noticeably wider than the rest, two round bulging cheeks pressing outward as though mid-bite.
Add a tiny leaf fragment peeking out from the corner of its mouth, the last bit not yet swallowed, which instantly explains why the cheeks are so full. Keep the rest of the body normal width so the contrast with the stuffed head reads clearly rather than the whole caterpillar looking uniformly swollen.
If the bulging cheeks look odd, round them generously rather than drawing sharp bumps, since soft curves read as full rather than oddly shaped. Color the body in marigold and the peeking leaf scrap in a cooler green or lilac tint for contrast against the warm body color.
Give the caterpillar slightly squinted, satisfied eyes rather than wide ones, since that small expression detail sells the greedy contentment better than the stuffed cheeks alone.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Keep things simple with a butterfly landing on a single lavender sprig, just one stem rather than a full bouquet. Draw the sprig first as one upright stem with several small rounded buds clustered near the top, then land the butterfly sideways along the stem with wings folded or half open, whichever pose feels more natural to your hand today.
Keep the lavender buds small and evenly spaced but not identical in size, since real buds cluster a bit unevenly along a stem. This pairs naturally with the calmer palette work found in the purple flower ideas if you want to borrow that same soft lilac family of color for the sprig itself.
If the buds start multiplying into a messy cluster, stop at six or seven small ovals rather than filling the whole stem top, since fewer well-placed buds read cleaner than a dense crowd. Color the sprig in a muted lilac and keep the landed butterfly in marigold so it stands apart from its own resting place.
Draw the stem with a very slight natural bend rather than ruler straight, since a straight stem reads as a drawn line while a slightly bent one reads as a real plant.
Palette: Lilac,Marigold,Black
Go playful again with a butterfly with polka-dot wings and curly antennae, a nice contrast after the quiet lavender sprig before it. Draw the wing outlines first, then fill them evenly with small round dots spaced a consistent distance apart, leaving a bit of white breathing room between each one rather than packing them edge to edge.
Curl the antennae into neat little spirals at the tips instead of the usual straight lines with a small hook, since that extra curl is the detail that gives this one its particular charm. If the dot spacing starts drifting uneven across the wing, lightly pencil a loose grid first and ink the dots following that guide, erasing the grid lines once you are done.
Color the dots in alternating marigold and lilac across both wings so the pattern has a little rhythm to it rather than one flat color. If marker feels too heavy for such small dots, a fine-tip pen in a third color works just as well for this detail.
Keep the curled antennae tips slightly different sizes from each other, since a tiny asymmetry there looks more charming than two identical spirals.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Slow right down with a chubby caterpillar sunbathing on a leaf. Draw a wide flat leaf first, then place the caterpillar across it on its back rather than its usual crawling position, round belly facing up, with tiny sunglasses or simply closed happy eyes to sell the relaxed mood.
Keep the body noticeably plumper than a usual caterpillar doodle, wider rounded segments rather than the slimmer tube shape used elsewhere in this list, since the whole charm of this one depends on that extra roundness. Add a tiny sun shape in the corner with a few simple rays if there is room left on the page.
If the segments start looking lumpy rather than smoothly chubby, keep the dividing lines shallow curves rather than deep indents, since a light touch there reads as soft and round. Color the body in marigold and the leaf in a cooler lilac-green tint for contrast between the warm sunbather and the shaded leaf beneath.
Give the caterpillar one arm or front leg tucked behind its head like a tiny pillow, since that single gesture turns a simple resting pose into a genuinely lazy sunbathing one.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Bring in a new creature for a butterfly riding on a ladybug’s back. Draw the ladybug first as a simple rounded dome shape with a center line down its back and a scatter of small round spots, then perch the butterfly right on top, legs gripping gently and wings held upright for balance during the ride.
Keep the ladybug’s spots irregular in size and placement rather than evenly gridded, since real ladybug spots never line up perfectly. If the two creatures start competing for attention, give the ladybug a solid bold marigold-red body and keep the butterfly’s wings in a softer lilac, so the eye settles on one focal point at a time.
If balance looks precarious, widen the ladybug’s stance slightly with its small legs spread for stability beneath its round body. This idea sits nicely alongside other small creature pairings, similar in spirit to the farmyard moments found in the pig doodle list if you enjoy drawing animals keeping each other company.
Draw the ladybug’s head small and tucked slightly forward, since a head drawn too large competes visually with the butterfly riding on top.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Echo the earlier dewdrop idea but with a different mood for a butterfly carrying a dewdrop like a crystal ball. Draw the butterfly first in a floating pose, both front legs cupped together beneath its body, then add a large round dewdrop balanced carefully in that cupped grip as though it were something precious.
Keep the dewdrop noticeably bigger than the dewdrop mirror idea earlier in this list, nearly as large as the butterfly’s own body, since the scale here is what makes it feel like a crystal ball rather than a simple reflective puddle. Add a small curved highlight line and maybe a faint swirl inside to suggest something magical hidden within.
If the dewdrop looks flat rather than spherical, add one crescent-shaped highlight near the top edge and a darker curved shadow along the bottom, the same basic trick used to make any circle read as a sphere. Color the dewdrop in pale lilac and leave the highlight crescent in plain white paper.
Leave that white highlight crescent unlined and uncolored no matter what, since it is the single detail doing the most work to sell the glassy, magical feel of the whole drawing.

Bring the scene in close with a butterfly napping on an open palm. Draw a simple open hand first, palm facing upward, fingers loosely curved rather than stiffly spread, then rest the sleeping butterfly right in the center of the palm with wings folded gently closed.
Keep the hand’s proportions simple, a rounded palm shape with four short curved fingers and a slightly longer thumb to one side, since overly detailed hands can quickly look more complicated than the sleepy butterfly resting on them. If the hand looks stiff, soften the finger joints into gentle curves rather than straight segments.
Color the butterfly in marigold with closed eye lines and a tiny content smile, and leave the hand mostly uncolored or just outlined, so attention stays on the sleeping figure rather than the palm itself. A quick ten-minute version skips the fingers almost entirely, just a rounded palm shape; the fuller version adds short lines for the life lines across the palm for extra warmth.
Keep the butterfly noticeably smaller than the palm itself, since that size relationship is what makes the whole gesture read as gentle and protective.
Palette: Marigold,Lilac,Black
Give the butterfly a bold new flower with one drinking nectar from a pink hibiscus. Draw the hibiscus bloom first with its wide open petals and the long central stamen reaching out past the petal edge, a feature that makes this flower easy to recognize even in a simple doodle.
Rest the butterfly along one petal edge with its proboscis reaching toward the base of the stamen where the nectar actually sits, keeping the body angled so it does not block the flower’s distinctive center. If the petals start looking flat, add two or three short curved fold lines near the base of each one to suggest the way hibiscus petals overlap slightly.
Color the petals in a warm pink if you have it, or substitute a deeper marigold-red blend, and keep the long stamen in a contrasting lilac or yellow tip. If a dedicated pink marker is not on hand, blending a touch of marigold lightly over white paper gives a workable warm pink effect.
Draw the stamen distinctly longer than you might expect, since that exaggerated length is exactly what makes a hibiscus instantly recognizable over any generic flower shape.

Bring the story close to its beginning again with a newly hatched butterfly, wings still crumpled, shy and fluffy. Draw the body first slightly hunched and small, then shape the wings not as smooth curves but as soft crinkled edges, a few short jagged lines along the wing border suggesting they have not fully opened yet.
Keep the whole pose a little hunkered down and close to the ground, since a newly emerged butterfly genuinely rests low while its wings dry and firm up, and that body language sells the shyness as much as the crumpled wing texture itself. Add a tiny empty cocoon shell nearby for context if there is room.
If the crumpled texture looks too chaotic, limit the jagged crinkle lines to just the outer third of each wing, leaving the inner section smooth, since real wings firm up from the body outward. Color the wings in a pale, slightly desaturated lilac to suggest they have not reached full color yet, saving the bold marigold for its later, fully formed stage.
Keep the eyes extra round and slightly wide, since that single expression detail does most of the work in making this one read as shy rather than simply unfinished.

Close the list with one last bit of comedy: a butterfly perched on a spinning pinwheel, very dizzy. Draw the pinwheel first as a simple cross of four triangular blades mounted on a thin stick, then add a few curved motion lines around the blades to suggest fast spinning, with the butterfly clinging on at the center hub.
Keep the butterfly’s expression the whole point of this one, crossed eyes, a slightly open wobbly mouth and wings splayed out unevenly rather than neatly folded, since that disoriented posture is what makes the joke land instantly. If the pinwheel blades look flat, alternate two colors across the four triangles so the spin reads clearly even in a still drawing.
Color the blades in alternating marigold and lilac, and keep the dizzy butterfly’s own wings in a plain pale tone so its exaggerated expression stays the clear focal point. For a quicker version, skip the motion lines and just rely on the crossed eyes and wobbly mouth, good for a ten-minute sketch.
Draw small spiral marks directly over the butterfly’s eyes instead of simple crosses, since that classic dizzy symbol reads instantly and finishes the whole joke with one extra flourish.

Keep a small notebook page of expression sketches nearby, crossed eyes, wobbly mouths and spiral pupils come in handy for plenty of other silly doodle moments beyond this one.
What to Do Next
Pick whichever butterfly or caterpillar caught your eye first and start there, on plain paper with your fineliner close by. Keep the pencil layout loose, ink once the pose feels right, and save the marigold and lilac for the details that deserve the extra charm.
Frequently Asked Questions
What pens work best for a butterfly doodle?
A black fineliner in a fine tip, around 0.3 to 0.5, gives clean outlines without bleeding through typical sketchbook paper. Add alcohol or dual-tip markers in lilac and marigold for quick accent color on wings and small props.
How do I keep both butterfly wings symmetrical?
Pencil a light vertical centerline through the body first, then sketch one wing fully and use it as a direct reference for the second rather than drawing both from memory. A folded tracing trick works too if the pattern is simple.
What is the easiest butterfly doodle for a first attempt?
Start with a simple resting pose like the butterfly drinking from a puddle or sitting on a mug rim, since both use basic rounded wing shapes without complex motion lines or tricky perspective to manage.
How small should a caterpillar’s body segments be?
Keep segments roughly even in width with gentle curved dividing lines rather than deep indents, since overly deep divisions make the body look lumpy instead of smoothly tubular. Five to seven segments usually reads clearly at doodle size.
Can I doodle butterflies without any marker colors?
Yes, a black fineliner alone still reads clearly since the wing shapes and patterns carry most of the charm. Light pencil shading or crosshatching can stand in for marker accents if color is not available.
