27 Knitting Drawing Ideas of Yarn Baskets, Cozy Knitters and Cats Tangled in Wool

24

Knitting drawing gives you a whole warm little world to work from: baskets of wool, half-finished sweaters, cats who cannot leave the yarn alone. Every scene here has a bit of story in it, so you are never just copying an object, you are drawing a small moment that feels lived in.

Grab your colored pencils and work through the list below in any order you like. Each idea sticks to one sitting, with the exact colors, the order to lay them down, and the one spot where things usually wobble, so you always know how to save it.

Start with the basket itself, since everything else piles on top of it. Sketch a simple woven oval in light graphite or a pale tan pencil, then build the yarn balls as overlapping circles that spill just over the rim, so the shape reads as full rather than tidy.

Work the basket first with Burnt Sienna and a touch of Cream, using short curved strokes to suggest the weave without drawing every strand. Then color each yarn ball in a different wool shade, Mustard, Sage, Rust, leaving a thin sliver of white paper between balls so they separate instead of blurring together.

If this is your first time drawing a pile of round shapes, measure the basket width first and make sure no single yarn ball is wider than that, or the pile looks top heavy. The scene usually goes wrong when every ball gets the same amount of shading, so pick one as the brightest and keep the rest a shade darker.

Finish with a loose strand of yarn trailing out over the basket edge onto the white paper, drawn in one single pencil line with no hatching, to give the eye somewhere to rest.

Move from yarn to the knitter herself. Block the rocking chair first as two simple curved runners under a seat, then sketch the grandmother sitting upright with her shoulders slightly forward, since that lean is what makes her look settled into the chair rather than perched on it.

Keep her face simple, a few soft lines for cheeks and closed or downcast eyes, and spend your detail on the cardigan instead. Color it in Sage with directional strokes that follow the fall of the fabric over her arms, then add the knitting needles crossing in her lap in a pale Cream.

Proportion is the trick here: her head should be roughly one eighth of her total seated height, and her hands need to sit at a natural knee height, not floating higher. If the chair looks off balance, check that the rockers extend evenly front and back of the seat legs.

One concrete tip for today: draw the chair and her body before any yarn detail, so the pose reads correctly before you commit to color.

After a quiet grandmother, bring in some mischief with a cat caught mid tangle in red yarn. Sketch the cat’s body low and stretched, one paw lifted and batting at a loop, since that single raised paw is what sells the action.

Lay the yarn first in loose overlapping loops around the cat’s legs and body using a true Scarlet Red, keeping the loops uneven so they look pulled rather than neatly coiled. Then build the cat’s fur over the top in short layered strokes of Cream and Burnt Sienna, letting a few red lines cross in front of the fur to show where the yarn wraps over the body.

The usual mistake is making the tangle so dense it reads as a solid red blob. Leave gaps of white paper between loops, and vary the loop sizes so the eye can follow the thread’s path around the cat.

If you do not have a red pencil, a warm Rust works just as well and feels even cozier against the cream fur.

Give the yarn a rest and draw the work in progress itself. Sketch two long knitting needles crossing at an angle, with the half-knit sweater body hanging from the stitches like a small curtain of fabric.

Draw the stitch rows as small repeating V shapes rather than a smooth block of color, working in Mustard or Rust, since that texture is what makes a viewer recognize knitting rather than plain fabric. Keep the unfinished bottom edge ragged, with a few loose loops still open on the needle tip.

Edges are where this one wins or loses. Use the tip of a kneaded eraser to lift a few highlight lines along the metal needles so they catch light and read as smooth and separate from the soft wool beside them.

If stitch by stitch feels slow, draw three full rows in detail near the needle and let the rest fade into looser hatching below, the eye fills in the rest.

Bring the knitting out into the world with a girl working on a scarf as she rides a train. Set the window frame first as a simple rounded rectangle taking up roughly a third of the page, then place her seated figure facing it with the scarf trailing across her lap.

Eye level matters here. Draw the window at her shoulder height so she looks seated low in the frame rather than standing, and let a soft gray wash of Payne’s Grey suggest blurred scenery outside, nothing detailed, just horizontal smudges to read as motion.

Color her scarf in a bright Mustard against the muted window so it stays the focal point. Keep her coat a plain Sage, with minimal folds, so the busier texture of the knitting does not compete with too much other detail.

One tip for today: leave the window glass almost bare, just a few pencil lines for reflection, since a fully colored window flattens the whole scene.

From one knitter to a few, this scene asks you to fit three or four figures around a small round table without crowding the page. Block each figure as a simple rounded shape first, spacing them evenly around the table before adding any faces or yarn.

Vary each knitter’s sweater color so the group reads as individuals rather than copies, Mustard, Rust, Sage, Cream, and give each one a different project, a sock, a scarf, a square. Add a coffee cup or teapot in the table center to anchor the composition.

If this is your first group scene, draw the table as an ellipse, not a circle, since a true circle from above looks like it is floating rather than sitting at eye level with the figures around it.

Spend less time on faces and more on the yarn colors in each lap, that is what makes the scene feel like a real gathering instead of a lineup.

After a busy group scene, slow back down with one long simple shape: a scarf still on the needles, trailing down past the edge of wherever it rests and pooling on the floor. Draw the needle and the top rows tightly, then let the scarf stretch the full height of the page.

Work the stitch texture only in the top third, in small Vs of Rust or Sage, and let it loosen into simple vertical hatching lines further down, since real knitting does get looser in the eye the further it is from the needle.

The quick ten minute version stops there, a single color scarf with light shading at the folds where it bends on the floor. The forty minute version adds a stripe pattern, two or three colors alternating every few rows, which takes real patience to keep even but looks far richer.

Keep the floor it pools on completely bare white paper, a single curved shadow line is enough to show where fabric meets ground.

Here is where the yarn comes from. Sketch the sheep’s body as a rounded oval with short sturdy legs, keeping the head and face simple with just two dark dots for eyes and a gentle curve for the nose.

Build the fleece in small overlapping loops rather than flat shading, using Cream with a few Burnt Sienna strokes along the shadowed underside, so the wool looks bouncy rather than smooth. Place a single yarn ball beside the sheep’s feet in the same Cream tone, which is the small joke of the drawing, her own wool spun and waiting.

One hands on trick for this texture: press lightly and use a circular scribbling motion rather than straight hatching for the fleece, it mimics the curl of real wool far better than parallel lines do.

If Cream feels too pale against white paper, warm it slightly with a light Mustard underlayer before adding the loop texture on top.

Palette: Cream,Burnt Sienna,Mustard,Payne’s Grey

Take the wool indoors now, stacked behind glass in a shop window. Draw the window frame first as a large rectangle with a simple mullion dividing it, then fill the lower two thirds with rows of skeins stacked like bricks, each one a slightly different wool color.

Color each skein individually, cycling through Mustard, Rust, Sage and Cream so no two neighbors match, and keep the outlines of each skein loose rather than perfectly round, real skeins slump a little under their own weight.

Light matters here: decide where the window light comes from and leave a diagonal strip of brighter, less shaded skeins along that side, while the opposite corner stays a touch darker. That single gradient is what makes a flat grid of circles read as a window display rather than a chart.

Leave the glass itself almost untouched, just a faint white gel pen streak for a reflection, to keep the skein colors the star of the page.

You Will Need

• white gel pen

Narrow the focus to one small still life: a pair of mittens left to dry on a sill. Draw them slightly overlapping, one tipped against the other, since perfectly symmetrical mittens look stiff and stamped rather than placed.

Color the ribbed cuffs with tight vertical hatching in Rust, then switch to looser strokes for the rounded hand section in Mustard, keeping the two textures distinct so the ribbing reads clearly against the plain body of the mitten.

If this is your first still life, measure the sill length against the mitten width before you start, mittens that are too large for their sill look like they belong to a giant. A narrow sill with mittens filling most of its length feels snug and correct.

Add a single thread connecting the two mittens at the cuffs, a small detail that instantly reads as a handmade pair rather than two random gloves.

Palette: Rust,Mustard,Cream

Keep the still life going but round out the shapes with a teapot wearing its cozy. Block the teapot body as a simple dome with a spout and handle first, then draw the cozy fitting over the top like a snug little hat, slightly larger than the pot itself.

Texture the cozy in a cable or rib pattern using Sage, working the raised cable lines in slightly darker strokes than the background stitches so they lift off the surface. Leave the spout and handle in a plain Cream or white to contrast against the patterned fabric.

The forty minute version adds a small pom pom on top of the cozy, drawn as tight overlapping scribbles rather than a smooth circle, which gives it real fuzzy volume. The ten minute version skips the pom pom and keeps the cable pattern simple.

One tip for today: shade the teapot’s shadow directly beneath it in a thin curved line of Payne’s Grey, it grounds the whole object on the page.

Palette: Sage,Cream,Payne’s Grey

Return to the cat, this time at total rest. Draw the curled body first as one continuous loose oval shape, tail wrapped around to meet the nose, then tuck the half-finished knitting project underneath as a flattened rectangle peeking out from under the cat’s weight.

Shade the cat in soft overlapping strokes of Burnt Sienna and Cream, keeping the pressure light since sleeping fur should look relaxed rather than bristled. Let the knitting underneath show only at the edges, a strip of Rust stitching visible along one side of the curled body.

Vary it next time by swapping the cat’s pose, stretched flat instead of curled, or the project underneath, a scarf instead of a sweater piece, so this scene never repeats itself exactly even if you draw a dozen sleeping cats over time.

Keep the whites of the paper around the cat bare, that empty space is what makes a curled nap feel peaceful rather than crowded.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cream,Rust

If your cat drawings all start to look alike, change the ear angle or tail position each time, small changes there read as entirely different personalities.

Take the knitter outdoors again, this time seated on a simple park bench with trees suggested behind her. Block the bench as two or three horizontal slats on simple legs, then seat her figure with her knitting held at chest height, elbows close to her body.

Eye level decides the mood here: draw the bench slightly below your own eye line so you look slightly down on her, which feels like a passerby’s view and makes the scene feel candid rather than posed. Keep background trees as simple rounded shapes in a muted Sage, blurred compared to her sharper, more detailed figure.

Color her sweater in Mustard for warmth against the cooler green background, and let the knitting in her lap pick up a third color, Rust, so the three main tones balance across the page.

One tip for today: skip detailing the bench slats fully, two or three lines suggesting wood grain is enough, your effort belongs in her hands and the yarn.

Palette: Mustard,Sage,Rust

Simplify again with a single object: a soft project bag, slouched and full, with the tips of two knitting needles and a loop of yarn escaping from the top opening. Draw the bag shape first as a rounded sack rather than a stiff box, since fabric bags slump under their own weight.

Pattern the bag’s fabric in a simple print, small dots or stripes in Sage against a Cream background, keeping the pattern loose near the folds so it bends with the fabric rather than sitting flat. Let the needle tips cross just above the bag opening in a plain Payne’s Grey, with a trailing loop of Rust yarn connecting them to the inside.

If patterned fabric feels fiddly, swap it for a plain solid bag in one wool color instead, the needles and yarn spilling out will still carry the whole idea.

Shade a soft shadow beneath the bag to settle it onto its surface, that single curve matters more than any extra pattern detail.

Palette: Sage,Cream,Rust,Payne’s Grey

Move to the moment before the knitting even starts. Draw the wooden swift as a simple open umbrella shape of thin crossed spokes, with the loose skein stretched around its outer edge and a half-formed ball sitting below where the yarn feeds down.

Keep the swift’s wood tones minimal, a few lines of Burnt Sienna for the spokes, so the colorful yarn stays the clear subject. Wind the yarn strand down from the swift to the ball in one continuous curved line, showing it has somewhere to go rather than floating disconnected.

This is a good proportion exercise: the swift’s spread should be roughly twice the width of the ball forming below it, which keeps the mechanics readable even without drawing every spoke in full detail.

If a wooden swift feels too technical to invent from memory, simplify it to a basic X frame, the winding motion is what tells the story, not the engineering.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Mustard,Cream

Bring the cozy scenes together with a knitter settled by a glowing fireplace, a cat stretched nearby. Block the fireplace opening first as a simple arched shape, then seat the knitter in a chair angled toward it, with the cat lying between the chair and the hearth.

Light is the whole point here: the fire is the main light source, so shade the side of the knitter’s face and sweater nearest the hearth a touch brighter, and let shadows fall longer on the side away from it. Keep the flames themselves simple, a few overlapping teardrop shapes in Rust and Mustard rather than fully rendered fire.

Color the knitting project in Sage for contrast against the warm fire tones, and let the cat pick up some of that same firelight glow along its back.

One tip for today: keep the room beyond the fireplace mostly implied with a few dark Payne’s Grey shadows, a fully drawn room competes with the warmth of the fire itself.

Palette: Rust,Mustard,Sage,Payne’s Grey

Soften the scale with a small baby blanket still on the needles, draped over someone’s lap, legs cropped at the frame edge so the focus stays entirely on the fabric and hands. Sketch the needles first, then let the blanket’s finished rows spread outward in a loose rectangle.

Choose pale, gentle colors here rather than the deeper wool tones elsewhere on this list, think soft Cream with a thin Sage border row, since baby knitting reads differently in pastel. Work the stitch texture small and even, since a baby blanket usually has a tighter, neater pattern than a chunky scarf.

The easy ten minute version is a plain cream rectangle with simple edge detailing. The forty minute version adds a small embroidered or knitted motif in one corner, a tiny star or heart shape worked in a single contrasting stitch block.

Keep the hands holding the needles loosely sketched, soft and relaxed fingers rather than tense ones, it suits the gentleness of the subject.

Palette: Cream,Sage,Mustard

Step away from hands and faces for a cleaner object study: a finished sweater hanging alone on a wooden hanger. Sketch the hanger first as a simple triangle shape, then let the sweater drape from it with natural weight, shoulders slightly rounded rather than square.

Texture the sweater in a consistent stitch pattern across the whole body, small repeating Vs in Mustard, and let the sleeves hang slightly forward with soft folds where the fabric catches gravity at the elbow. Keep the hanger itself plain Burnt Sienna with minimal shading.

The edges matter most on this one: use a kneaded eraser to lift a thin highlight line along the shoulder seams and hem, which separates the sweater’s silhouette cleanly from the white paper behind it without needing a drawn outline.

If stitch texture across a whole sweater feels like too much, texture only the collar and cuffs in detail and let the body fade into simple flat color.

You Will Need

• kneaded eraser

Palette: Mustard,Burnt Sienna

From one sweater to several, folded into a tidy stack. Draw each sweater as a simple flattened rectangle, slightly uneven in size and alignment, since a perfectly neat stack looks printed rather than hand-folded.

Give each layer its own wool color, cycling through Mustard, Sage, Rust and Cream from bottom to top, and shade a thin line of shadow where each fold meets the one beneath it, that single shadow line is what separates the stack into distinct layers rather than one solid block.

A simple measuring trick helps here: keep each sweater roughly the same thickness as you stack upward, so the pile reads as even sweaters rather than one thick one and several thin ones squashed beneath it.

If you want texture without redrawing a full stitch pattern on every layer, add it only to the top sweater in the stack and let the ones underneath stay flat color, visible mostly at their folded edges.

Palette: Mustard,Sage,Rust,Cream

Bring in a second animal with a small dog standing proudly in its own knitted sweater. If you enjoyed drawing the sweater on a hanger earlier, this one is the same garment put to work on a wriggly body instead, so block the dog’s stance first, four simple legs and an alert head, before fitting the sweater over the torso.

Fit the sweater snugly around the dog’s chest and back, letting it wrinkle slightly at the shoulders where the fabric bunches, since that small wrinkle is what makes a sweater look worn rather than painted on. Color it in Rust with simple rib texture at the neck and leg openings.

Keep the dog’s own fur minimal, short directional strokes in Cream or Burnt Sienna, so the knitted texture of the sweater stands apart clearly from the smoother fur beneath it.

One tip for today: give the tail a slight upward curve, it reads as a happier, more confident pose than a straight or drooping one.

Palette: Rust,Cream,Burnt Sienna

If you enjoyed sketching dogs here, the dog pencil drawing ideas for beginners page has more poses worth trying next.

Settle into a quieter still life now: an open pattern book flanked by a pair of needles and a steaming cup of coffee. Draw the book first as two overlapping rectangles meeting at a soft center spine, with a few faint lines suggesting diagram sketches on the open pages.

Keep the book pages nearly bare, Cream with a whisper of grey shadow near the spine, since too much detail on the printed pattern competes with everything else on the table. Set the needles resting diagonally across one page, and the coffee cup just off to the side with a few curved lines of steam rising in pale Payne’s Grey.

If drawing a convincing cup feels tricky, trace a small coin or bottle cap for the rim circle before freehanding the sides down to the base, it keeps the ellipse looking even.

Finish by warming the steam lines with a tiny smudge of Rust near the cup rim, it suggests the coffee is still fresh.

You Will Need

• a small circular object to trace for the cup rim

Palette: Cream,Payne’s Grey,Rust

Move the whole scene outside for one with real seasonal color. Seat the knitter on porch steps or a porch chair, then build a few simple autumn leaves scattered near her feet and one small tree or bush at the frame edge with Rust and Mustard foliage.

Choose a low, warm light source for this one, coming from one side as if late afternoon sun, and shade the porch boards and her figure slightly longer and deeper on the opposite side. That single choice makes the whole page feel like a particular time of day rather than flat daylight.

Her sweater can pick up the same Rust as the leaves around her, which ties the whole page together into one warm palette rather than scattered unrelated colors.

One tip for today: scatter the fallen leaves unevenly, never in a neat row, real leaves drift and cluster rather than line up.

Palette: Rust,Mustard,Burnt Sienna,Cream

For more cozy seasonal scenes to pair this with, the winter scenery drawing ideas page carries the mood straight into the colder months.

Take the wool back outdoors to its market stall origins. Draw a simple wooden table or crate first, then stack a handful of alpaca yarn skeins across it in natural undyed tones, Cream, soft Mustard, a pale grey, since alpaca yarn often stays close to its natural fleece colors rather than bright dye.

Vary the skein shapes slightly, some tied tighter and rounder, others looser and more oval, which keeps the stall looking hand arranged rather than mass produced. A small hand lettered price tag or ribbon tied around one skein adds a nice market detail without much extra drawing time.

If this is your first farm stall scene, keep the background almost entirely implied, a suggestion of a tent edge or wooden post is enough, the skeins themselves should fill most of the frame.

Shade each skein’s rounded form with a single curved highlight left bare down the center, that one bright streak is what makes a flat drawn circle read as a soft round bundle of fiber.

Palette: Cream,Mustard,Payne’s Grey

Bring two generations into one scene, building on the solo grandmother chair idea from earlier but now with a small pupil beside her. Seat the grandmother slightly larger and more upright, with the little girl tucked close, her hands guided by the grandmother’s over a simple practice swatch of yarn.

Keep the girl’s proportions genuinely childlike, a larger head relative to her body and smaller hands, which is what separates a child figure from simply a smaller adult. Color her sweater in a brighter, lighter Mustard than the grandmother’s deeper Rust, a small visual cue that reads as generational without needing any extra explanation.

The swatch of practice knitting between their hands can stay loose and uneven, a few wonky stitches actually help sell the beginner moment being shown.

One tip for today: overlap their hands slightly rather than placing them side by side, that overlap is what makes the teaching moment feel connected rather than posed.

Palette: Rust,Mustard,Cream

Simplify again with one small, satisfying object: a knitted hat with a fluffy pom pom, hanging from a single wall hook. Draw the hook first as a small curved line, then let the hat’s weight pull it slightly to one side rather than hanging perfectly straight.

Texture the hat body in rib stitch, vertical Vs running down from the brim in Sage, and build the pom pom separately on top using tight circular scribbles in Cream, layering several passes to give it real volume rather than a flat colored circle.

The quick version stops at a plain ribbed hat with pom pom. The longer version adds a thin contrasting stripe near the brim, which takes only a few extra minutes but makes the hat look like it came from a real pattern rather than a single block of color.

Keep the wall and hook almost entirely bare, a single curved shadow beneath the hat is enough to ground it.

Palette: Sage,Cream,Mustard

For something a little different, draw a yarn bombed tree trunk wrapped in strips of colorful knitting, the kind of playful public art some parks have. Sketch the trunk first as a simple rounded column with a bit of bark texture showing above and below the wrapped section.

Wrap the knitted band around the trunk in overlapping panels of different colors, Mustard, Rust, Sage, Cream, each panel keeping its own stitch pattern, stripes here, chevrons there, since a yarn bombed tree usually looks pieced together from several separate knitters’ work.

Curve each panel slightly to follow the roundness of the trunk rather than drawing them flat, which is the detail that convinces the eye the knitting is actually wrapped around a cylinder and not pasted onto a flat surface.

If multiple patterns feel like too much for one sitting, limit yourself to three colors in simple stripes, it still reads clearly as yarn bombing without demanding intricate stitch work.

Palette: Mustard,Rust,Sage,Cream

Close the list back indoors with a quiet bedside scene: a knitting basket set beside a bed, lit by a small lamp. Draw the bed edge and side table first as simple geometric shapes, then nestle the yarn basket on the floor just beneath, echoing the overflowing basket from the very first idea but now softened by lamp light.

Let the lamp be the only light source in the scene, warming everything nearby in soft Mustard and Cream tones while the corners of the page stay a touch cooler and darker in Payne’s Grey. That contrast between warm lamp glow and the dim room around it gives the whole drawing a late evening, winding down feeling.

Keep the basket’s yarn balls simple circles here, since this scene relies more on the lighting mood than on object detail to do the work.

One tip for today: let the lamp’s light pool unevenly, brighter directly beneath it and fading out toward the floor, rather than lighting the whole room evenly.

Palette: Mustard,Cream,Payne’s Grey,Sage

What to Do Next

Pick one scene from this list that matches how much time you actually have today, a single mitten still life if you are short on it, or the knitting club scene if you want to settle in for longer. Start on plain white paper with a light pencil sketch of the main shapes, then build your wool colors up in layers from there.

Frequently Asked Questions

What colored pencils work best for knitting drawing?

Soft wax based colored pencils blend and layer easiest for yarn texture. Look for warm wool tones like mustard, rust, sage and cream, and keep a cream or white pencil handy for highlights on rounded yarn balls and stitches.

How do you make knitted stitches look realistic in pencil?

Draw small repeating V shapes in rows rather than flat color blocks, since that pattern is what reads as knitting. Vary pressure slightly row to row so the texture looks hand worked instead of mechanically printed.

How do I keep a tangle of yarn from looking like a solid blob?

Leave visible gaps of white paper between loops and vary loop sizes as you draw them. A tangle only reads clearly when the eye can trace a few individual strands through the mess.

What is the easiest knitting drawing idea to start with?

A simple still life like mittens on a windowsill or a basket of yarn balls is easiest, since there is no figure or pose to get wrong. Build confidence there before moving on to seated knitters or animals.

How do you shade yarn to look soft instead of flat?

Use short, varied strokes that curve slightly rather than straight parallel lines, and leave a thin highlight of bare paper along the rounded edge of each yarn ball. That bare strip does more to suggest softness than heavy shading.
