A forest drawing gives you everything a landscape lover wants in one page: tall shapes to practice, soft snow to shade, and a quiet little story running through it. Working in graphite with just one muted color accent keeps every scene calm and focused, and lets you finish a whole winter wood in a single sitting instead of fighting a full palette.
Below are 34 scenes, from a simple path between pines to a stag breathing frost in a beech wood. Each one has a clear order of marks, a place where beginners usually stumble, and a swap if you are missing a tool, so you can pick whichever path, stream or creature calls to you and get drawing today.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start a woodland path drawing with two converging lines running from the bottom corners up to a point just above center: that single vanishing point keeps the pines leaning inward correctly and stops the path from drifting sideways. Rough in a row of tall triangular pine shapes along both sides, smaller as they near the vanishing point, before any shading begins.
Work the trunks and shadowed snow first with a 2B pencil, then switch to a soft 4B for the deep gaps between branches. Add the walking figure last, small and roughly a third of the way up the path, in a simple coat shape with a scarf you fill in with warm red colored pencil: that one patch of color is what pulls the eye straight down the path.
If the figure ends up too large, the path reads as short rather than long, so sketch it tiny first and only firm up the lines once the scale looks right. No red pencil on hand works fine with orange or coral instead, since the point is contrast against white snow, not the exact hue.
Keep the horizon line low on the page so the pines tower over the walker and the path feels endless.

Move from a path to water with a frozen stream winding between pine trunks. Lay down the stream’s edges first as two loose curving lines that narrow as they recede, since a stream that stays the same width all the way back will flatten the whole drawing.
Shade the ice itself very lightly with a 2B, leaving patches of bare white paper for the brightest glare, then use a blending stump to soften the gray into the snowbanks on either side. Pine trunks go in next as dark verticals with a 4B, placed to overlap the stream’s curve so the eye follows the water back into the trees.
A thin band of pale blue colored pencil along one edge of the ice suggests shadow without turning the whole stream cold and flat. If the ice looks too busy, erase some texture back out with a kneaded eraser rather than adding more pencil, since ice reads better with fewer marks and more bare paper.
Let the stream bend at least twice so the path into the forest feels natural rather than ruled.

A deer stepping out of the trees needs its proportions sorted before any fur goes on the page. Block the body as an oval, the legs as straight lines hinged at clear joints, and the head as a smaller oval set at an angle to the neck. A deer’s front legs usually sit roughly under the eye line of a standing animal, so check that placement before refining the outline.
Shade the body with short overlapping pencil strokes following the direction the fur grows, darkest along the back and belly shadow, lighter on the flank facing the path. Leave the pine trunks behind it loose and soft so the deer, not the forest, holds the detail.
Give the deer one small warm touch, a rust brown colored pencil along its back or ear, to separate it gently from the gray wood around it. If the legs look too thick, thin them along the back edge only, since the front edge usually already reads correctly.
Draw the near legs darker and the far legs lighter to push the animal into the snow convincingly.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey,Soft White
Look at a photo of a standing deer side-on before you sketch, just to fix the leg joints in your head, then put the photo away and draw from memory for a livelier pose.
A wooden footbridge gives this scene its structure, so draw the bridge first as two parallel curved lines for the top rail and a matching pair below for the deck, meeting at a gentle arch in the middle. Add upright posts at even spacing along the rail before any shading, since uneven spacing is the fastest way to make a bridge look wrong.
Shade the wood grain with quick horizontal 2B strokes, darker on the underside where the bridge shadows itself, then work the icy brook beneath it with soft diagonal strokes and plenty of untouched white paper for ice glare. The brook should pass under the bridge and reappear on the other side, narrower, to keep the sense of depth.
Touch the handrail or a clump of frozen reeds beside the water with a moss green colored pencil for the only color note in the scene. If the bridge looks flat, add a thin dark line under the deck boards where they meet the posts, since that single shadow line does most of the work of making it three-dimensional.
Draw the posts slightly shorter as they go into the distance to keep the perspective believable.

A fallen tree across a trail works well for practicing how a cylinder lies in space. Draw the trunk as a long tapering tube lying diagonally across the page, with the near end wider than the far end, and sketch a few broken branch stubs pointing up at different angles before you shade anything.
Build the bark texture with a 4B in short vertical strokes that curve slightly to follow the trunk’s roundness, then pile soft graphite snow on top using a light 2B with the pencil almost flat against the paper for a powdery look. Leave the trail itself mostly white, just a few tracked lines where someone has stepped around the log.
A patch of rust colored lichen on the bark, added in burnt orange colored pencil, gives the log age without extra drawing. If the snow on top looks too solid, lift a few uneven patches out with a kneaded eraser so it sits like drifted snow rather than a painted cap.
Keep the far end of the trunk smaller and vaguer so it reads as receding into the trees.

A forest clearing simplifies the composition down to open snow with one strong focal shape, the bench, so place it slightly off center rather than in the middle of the page. Sketch the bench as simple rectangles first, seat and back and legs, before any pines are added around the clearing’s edge.
Shade the pines as a loose dark ring framing the open snow, keeping your pencil pressure light in the clearing itself so the untouched white paper reads as fresh snowfall. Add the bench’s shadow as a soft gray shape stretching away from an implied light source, which does more to seat it in the snow than detailing the wood ever will.
A single dusty teal or faded red cushion-colored cloth draped on the bench, or just a strip of color along one plank, gives the eye somewhere to land. If the clearing feels empty, resist filling it with more trees, and instead add one small set of footprints leading toward the bench.
Thin, quick strokes for falling snow across the whole page tie the scene together without extra weight.
Palette: Dusty Teal,Charcoal Grey,Soft White
A woodpecker drawing lives or dies on the angle of the body against the trunk, so sketch the trunk first as a strong vertical, then set the bird in profile with its tail braced against the bark and its head pulled back mid-peck. That braced tail is what makes the pose read as drumming rather than just perching.
Shade the trunk’s bark with a 4B in rough vertical plates, frosted at the edges with light, quick white highlights left as bare paper. Keep the bird’s body shading simple, soft gray on the back and a cleaner white belly, since a busy bird against busy bark gets lost.
Give the woodpecker its red cap in colored pencil, the one unmistakable mark of the species, and let that be the only color in the whole drawing. If the beak looks too long, shorten it by a third and check it again, since beginners nearly always draw it longer than it needs to be.
A few wood chips flicked below the beak, drawn as tiny flecks, sell the motion without any extra effort.
Palette: Scarlet Red,Charcoal Grey,White
Fog changes everything about how you shade a forest, so start this one backward from most drawings: block in the palest, farthest pines first with a soft 2B smudged heavily with a blending stump, then work forward with progressively darker, sharper trees as they come toward the viewer. That fade from sharp to soft is what reads as fog on paper.
Keep the tiny walker and dog near the bottom of the page, drawn with far more edge and contrast than any of the trees around them, since the only sharp shapes in a foggy scene should be the ones closest to the eye. A simple upright coat shape and a small four-legged dog silhouette is all the detail they need.
One soft mustard scarf or coat patch on the walker gives the only color note against all that gray. If the fog looks patchy rather than smooth, go back over the lighter background trees with the blending stump again, working in one direction only.
Leave more bare paper than feels natural in the upper half of the page, since fog is mostly empty space.

A forest cabin drawing needs its roofline settled before the trees go in around it, so sketch the cabin as a simple box with a steep triangular roof, a single door, and one or two small windows, kept well below the height of the pines beside it so the forest still dominates the page.
Shade the log walls with short horizontal strokes in a 2B, then darken the roof’s snow shadow and the window glass with a 4B, leaving one window lit pale yellow in colored pencil as the only warm glow in the scene. That lit window does more storytelling than any amount of extra detail on the cabin itself.
Draw the smoke last, as a few soft curling lines rising and drifting sideways, using a kneaded eraser to lighten and blur the top of the curl so it dissolves into the sky rather than stopping abruptly. If the smoke looks stiff, loosen your wrist and redraw it in one continuous curved motion instead of several short ones.
Keep the pines around the cabin darker than the cabin itself so the building still reads as the clearing’s center.

If you enjoy drawing cozy winter shelters, the Christmas fireplace drawing ideas make a warm companion piece once this cabin is done.
A family of wild boar gives you a chance to draw one confident adult shape and repeat a smaller version of it for the young, so block the sow first as a thick rounded body on short legs, snout low to the snow, then scatter two or three piglets around her at roughly half her size each.
Shade the adult’s bristly coat with a 4B using short, flicked strokes that point outward from the spine, darkest along the back and lighter toward the belly where she roots in the snow. Keep the piglets’ coats smoother and paler, since young boar have finer fur than a shaded, bristly adult.
A patch of rust brown colored pencil on the overturned earth beneath the snow where they are rooting gives the only color and tells the story of what they are doing. If the boar start looking like dogs, square off the snout more and drop the legs shorter relative to the body.
Draw the oak trunks behind them thick and gnarled rather than slender, since oaks read very differently from pines.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Charcoal Grey,White
A stone wall running through a wood is really a lesson in drawing a repeated shape that still looks random, so sketch a rough diagonal band across the page first, then fill it with irregular stacked stones of varying size, never lining up neatly row on row.
Shade each stone separately with a 2B, darker underneath where it casts shadow on the stone below, which is what makes the wall feel stacked rather than painted as one flat strip. Snow caps each stone’s top edge, left as bare white paper rather than drawn in.
Touch a mossy green colored pencil into the shadowed undersides of several stones, since real moss clings to the damp, shaded side of stone rather than the snowy top. If the wall looks too tidy, knock a stone or two slightly out of alignment and let one gap show daylight through it.
Let the wall disappear behind a tree partway along, which keeps it from looking like a ruler-drawn border across the page.
Palette: Moss Green,Cool Grey,White
Animal tracks crossing untouched snow is the simplest composition on this list and a good one for a short sitting, since most of the page stays bare white paper. Start by deciding the path the tracks take, a gentle curve from one corner toward the middle distance, and place the prints along it in a believable walking rhythm, slightly offset left and right rather than in a dead straight line.
Shade just the inside of each print with a soft 2B, darkest at the leading edge where the paw or hoof pressed down hardest, and leave a thin rim of shadow stretching away from each print to show the low raking light. The snow itself needs almost no shading at all beyond that.
A thin band of pale blue colored pencil along the shadow side of the whole track line adds cold light without touching the snow’s surface. If the tracks look too even and mechanical, vary the spacing slightly, since real animals rarely walk in a perfectly measured line.
Fade the tracks smaller and fainter as they near the tree line to pull the eye back into the forest.
Palette: Powder Blue,Charcoal Grey,White
A single fir branch bending low under snow makes a strong close-up study, so draw the branch first as a gentle downward curve with short needle clusters stacked along its length, heavier and more drooping toward the tip where the snow weighs most.
Build the snow on top of the branch with a very light 2B and a lot of bare paper, using the side of the pencil rather than the tip for a soft, piled look, then shade the needles underneath much darker to push the snow forward visually. The stream below gets loose, quick strokes to suggest moving or half frozen water, kept simpler than the branch so it stays secondary.
A touch of deep green colored pencil in the shadowed needle clusters keeps the fir from reading as plain gray graphite. If the branch looks stiff, redraw the main curve in one smooth motion before adding any needles, since a shaky structural line never looks convincing no matter how the detail is handled.
Let a few icicles drip from the branch’s tip for a nice finishing detail.
Palette: Deep Green,Cool Grey,White
A figure pulling a sled gives this trail scene its action, so work out the lean first: her body angles forward against the rope, weight on her front foot, since a straight upright posture will make the sled look weightless. Sketch the sled behind her as a low rectangle piled with uneven logs.
Shade her coat with a 2B in simple rounded folds, keep the firewood on the sled rough and varied in size with a 4B, and leave the rope between her hand and the sled as a single taut line with almost no shading at all. The trail under the sled runners gets two faint parallel grooves trailing back behind it.
A deep red or burgundy hat or mitten accent in colored pencil warms up the whole figure against the gray wood. If the lean looks awkward, check that her front knee bends slightly and her back leg stays straighter, which is how a real pulling stride holds its balance.
Keep the pines behind her simple so the sled and figure stay the clear subject.
Palette: Burgundy,Sepia,White
A frozen pond scene turns on getting the ice surface believable, so lay the pond in first as a wide flattened oval, lighter in tone than the snowbanks around it, with a few long faint diagonal lines scratched across it to suggest cracks or reflections rather than texture everywhere.
Place the skater small and off-center, one leg extended in a glide, drawn with a 2B in simple confident lines rather than fussy detail, since at this size a clean silhouette reads better than careful anatomy. Shade a soft reflection beneath the skater’s feet to anchor them to the ice.
A single warm orange or red scarf or hat on the skater gives the eye its landing point against all that pale gray ice. If the pond looks too flat, darken the far shore’s tree line more than the near one, which pushes the ice back into believable distance.
Ring the pond with dark pines to frame the bright ice at its center.
Palette: Burnt Orange,Cool Grey,White
A hollow stump with an owl peeking out rewards patience with the stump’s texture more than the owl’s detail, so draw the stump first as a thick broken cylinder with a dark ragged hollow cut into its upper half, shaded heaviest inside the hollow itself to push it back into shadow.
Sketch the owl small, just head and shoulders visible at the hollow’s edge, with large round eyes drawn slightly asymmetrical for a more alert, curious look. Shade its feathers with short soft strokes in a 2B, much lighter than the dark hollow behind it so the owl’s pale face stands out clearly.
Give the owl one amber or gold colored pencil accent in its eyes, which brings the whole small creature to life more than any amount of extra feather detail. If the stump looks like a simple log, add a few broken splinters and bark curls at its torn top edge.
Snow caps on the stump’s rim finish the scene without extra fuss.
Palette: Amber,Burnt Umber,White
A tiny owl in a hollow pairs nicely with the quieter woodland moments in the woodland Christmas junk journal pages if you enjoy this kind of cozy forest scene.
A half frozen waterfall needs you to decide early which sections stay moving water and which have frozen solid, so sketch the rock face first, then mark a few vertical channels down it: some left bare and smooth for ice, others loosely scribbled for water still falling through the middle.
Shade the frozen sections with long even strokes of a 2B, leaving sharp bare-paper highlights down their length, then draw the icicles hanging from every ledge as simple tapering triangles, darkest along one edge to give them roundness. The moving water gets quicker, looser marks with a softer 4B for contrast against all that hard ice.
A thin streak of pale icy blue colored pencil down the frozen channels sells the cold better than gray alone ever could. If the icicles look too uniform, vary their length and thickness noticeably, since real ice never forms in matching rows.
Dark pines crowding close on both sides frame the falls and keep the eye on the ice.
Palette: Powder Blue,Charcoal Grey,White
Shifting to a wide hilltop view changes the whole approach, so work from the top of the page down: the farthest ridgeline of spruce first, drawn as a soft uneven row of tiny triangles pressed lightly with a 2B, then progressively darker and larger rows of spruce as the view comes forward toward the hilltop itself.
Leave real gaps of untouched paper between the distant ridges and the nearer ones to stand in for drifting mist, rather than drawing mist as a texture of its own. The foreground hilltop snow stays the brightest, most contrasted part of the whole drawing, which pulls the eye there first before it travels back through the misty layers.
A single warm rust or gold colored pencil streak along the horizon, where a low sun might be breaking through, adds just enough warmth to the cool gray scene. If the distance and foreground start to blend together, push the nearest spruce noticeably darker than you think they need to be.
Keep the sky almost entirely bare paper for maximum contrast against the trees.
Palette: Rust Gold,Cool Grey,White
Bracket fungi stepping up a fallen birch log makes a nice close, detailed study after some of the wider scenes above. Draw the birch log first with its pale bark marked by short horizontal dark dashes, the classic birch pattern, then add the fungi as small overlapping fan shapes climbing up one side of the trunk, each slightly larger than the one below it.
Shade the underside of each fungus shelf darker than its frosted top edge, since the frost catches light along the upper rim while the gills beneath stay in shadow. A 2B handles the birch bark’s pale gray tone, while a sharper 4B picks out the dark bark dashes and fungi shadows.
A dusty rust or ochre colored pencil on the fungi’s outer edges keeps them from reading as plain gray growths. If the birch bark pattern looks too regular, vary the dash lengths and spacing, since real birch bark never repeats evenly.
Frost along the log’s top edge, left as untouched white paper, finishes the cold feel without extra pencil work.
Palette: Ochre,Cool Grey,White
A narrow road disappearing into fir trees is a classic one-point perspective exercise, so rule a faint vanishing point first, low and roughly centered, and let both edges of the road taper toward it before any trees appear. Keep the road’s edges slightly uneven rather than ruler straight, since a hand-drawn forest road should never look drafted.
Fir trees along both sides shrink and darken in reverse as they approach the viewer, largest and most detailed at the front edges of the page, smallest and softest near the vanishing point. Shade the road’s surface with a light 2B, keeping it noticeably paler than the fir shadows on either side.
A single muted green or brown colored pencil touch low in the fir branches nearest the viewer keeps the whole scene from feeling purely gray. If the road looks like it floats, add a thin band of shadow where it meets the snowbank on either side.
Faint tire or sled tracks down the center add just enough story without cluttering the scene.
Palette: Deep Green,Charcoal Grey,White
A lynx sitting in the shadow of snowy pines is a good subject for practicing an animal’s silhouette against a dark backdrop, so block the lynx first as a compact seated shape, tufted ears sketched early since they are the feature that identifies it instantly.
Shade the pines behind it dense and dark with a 4B, almost a solid wall of shadow, then shade the lynx itself much more lightly by comparison, with soft spotted markings dabbed in with the pencil tip rather than drawn as hard outlines. That contrast between dark trees and pale cat is what makes the animal pop off the page.
Amber or pale gold colored pencil in the lynx’s eyes gives it the watchful look the animal is known for. If the ear tufts look too long or floppy, shorten them and angle them slightly forward, which reads as far more alert than tufts drooping sideways.
Leave the snow in front of the lynx untouched and bright to frame it against the dark wood.
Palette: Amber,Charcoal Grey,White
A hiker resting on a log keeps the pose doing most of the storytelling, so sketch the seated figure first: knees bent, shoulders slightly hunched forward, one hand raised holding a small thermos near chin height. Getting that forward hunch right is what sells rest rather than a stiff, posed sitting figure.
Shade the log beneath the hiker with rough bark texture in a 4B, then work the hiker’s coat and pack with a softer 2B in simple rounded folds, keeping detail minimal on the face since at this distance a few simple marks for eyes and a nose read better than an attempt at a full portrait.
A warm burnt orange or red beanie or thermos cap gives the only color note in the whole resting scene. If the pose looks stiff, loosen the spine’s curve on your initial sketch before committing to any shading, since a straight back is the most common reason a seated figure looks uncomfortable to draw and to view.
A small steam curl rising from the thermos’s open cap adds a nice finishing touch.
Palette: Burnt Orange,Sepia,White
Sunrays slanting through pines are drawn mostly by what you leave out, so plan the light source first, high and to one side, and let every ray and shadow in the drawing point consistently away from it. Sketch the rays as a few wide, soft diagonal bands of untouched or barely-shaded paper cutting through the darker pine trunks.
Shade the trunks that fall inside a ray’s path noticeably lighter than trunks standing in shadow between the rays, which is the whole trick to making sunlight look like it is actually slanting through the trees rather than just lighting the scene evenly. The snow where the rays land gets a little extra sparkle from small flicks of a kneaded eraser pulling out bright highlight dots.
A pale warm gold colored pencil washed lightly along the ray edges adds real sunlight warmth without overpowering the graphite. If the rays look too solid, soften their edges with a blending stump so they fade rather than stop sharply.
Keep the darkest shadows well away from the rays themselves for the strongest contrast.

A lookout tower rising above the pines needs its structure planned before any snow or trees go in, so draw the tower’s main uprights first as four converging lines meeting near the top, then cross-brace them with diagonal struts at even intervals, which is what actually makes a wooden tower look structurally sound on paper.
Shade the tower’s timber with a 2B in long even strokes along each beam’s length, darker where one beam crosses in front of another to show depth. The treetops below get drawn after the tower, kept simple and dark so the tower’s pale wood stands out clearly against them.
A single red or orange flag or lantern near the tower’s top platform gives the eye a destination as it climbs the structure. If the struts look flimsy, thicken the main corner posts slightly, since a tower reads as sturdy mostly through its corner beams rather than its cross braces.
Snow dusting the platform’s railing finishes the cold, high-up feeling.
Palette: Burnt Orange,Sepia,White
A stag with frosty breath asks for antlers drawn early and carefully, since a wrong antler shape is far harder to fix than a wrong leg. Sketch the main beam of each antler as a gentle curve first, then branch the tines off it at varied angles, checking that both antlers roughly mirror each other before adding any detail.
Shade the stag’s body with a 4B in confident strokes along the muscle lines of the neck and shoulder, since a stag’s bulk sits mostly in that area. Beech trunks behind it get drawn smooth and pale compared to pine bark, with a scatter of dry beech leaves still clinging to a few low branches even in winter, which is a nice detail that sets a beech wood apart from a pine forest.
Breath is drawn as a soft puff of barely-there pencil, almost erased back into the white paper, with no color needed at all here since the one accent can go into a rust leaf or two instead. If the antlers look too symmetrical and stiff, offset one slightly for a more natural, living feel.
Keep the stag’s legs planted solidly in deep snow with soft shadow pooling around each hoof.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Sepia,White
A dog bounding through deep snow is mostly about catching one clear moment of motion, so sketch the body mid-leap, front legs tucked up and back legs extended behind, rather than a stiff standing pose. Snow spray kicked up around the paws, drawn as loose scattered flicks of the pencil, does more to convey speed than the pose alone.
Shade the dog’s coat with a 2B following the direction the fur would blow backward from the motion, darker along the spine and lighter on the chest catching the light as it leaps forward. Keep the snow spray mostly untouched white paper with just a few gray flick marks for shadowed clumps.
A bright collar in red or blue colored pencil gives the eye a fixed point on a moving subject. If the leap looks static, lower the front paws and raise the back legs higher behind, since exaggerating the stretch between front and back usually fixes a flat-looking jump.
Trees blurred slightly at the edges on either side help suggest the dog is moving fast past them.
Palette: Scarlet Red,Charcoal Grey,White
If you like drawing dogs in motion, the dog pencil drawing ideas for beginners cover more poses and breeds to practice next.
An old stone well gives you a compact, rewarding subject with a clear structure: a round stacked stone base, two uprights, a crossbeam, and a small peaked roof over the top. Draw the base as a simple cylinder in perspective, slightly wider at the front edge than the back, before adding the roof structure above it.
Shade the stones with a 2B in individual rounded blocks, darker in the gaps between them, then add the wooden roof and beam with a 4B in grainy vertical strokes. A chain or rope hanging down into the well’s dark interior, drawn as a single looping line disappearing into black shading, adds a nice sense of depth and mystery.
A faded green moss patch in colored pencil climbing up the shaded side of the stone base finishes the aged look. If the well looks flat against the snow, add a strong cast shadow stretching from its base across the clearing, which plants it firmly on the ground.
Snow piled on the roof’s edge, left mostly as bare paper, completes the quiet winter scene.
Palette: Moss Green,Sepia,White
A frozen lake ringed by pines works best as a wide, calm composition, so divide the page roughly into thirds: dark pine tree line at the top, pale flat ice through the middle, and a narrow strip of snowy shore at the bottom. Keep the ice almost entirely untouched white paper, since a frozen lake’s flatness depends on restraint more than shading.
Shade the ring of pines heavily with a 4B, darkest where they meet their own reflections faintly suggested on the ice below with a few soft horizontal smudges. That faint reflection line is what convinces the eye the pale area really is ice and not simply blank paper.
A single streak of pale cold blue colored pencil along the horizon where ice meets tree line adds just enough chill without disturbing all that calm white space. If the lake looks too small, extend the ice right to the edges of the page on both sides, since a frozen lake almost always benefits from feeling wider than the page can quite hold.
Leave the sky above the pines bare for maximum quiet.
Palette: Powder Blue,Charcoal Grey,White
A jay on a snowy branch is a good small subject to practice one strong color accent against mostly gray graphite. Sketch the bird first as a simple rounded body with a short crest at the back of the head, perched with its tail angled slightly down for balance on the branch.
Shade the body’s gray and brown tones with a soft 2B, keeping the strokes light and layered rather than one flat tone, since a jay’s plumage has a lot of subtle variation even before any blue appears. Leave the wing’s blue feather patch as the one spot of real color, filled in carefully with blue colored pencil in short layered strokes that follow the feather direction.
Snow on the branch beneath the jay’s feet stays bright white paper with just a thin gray shadow line where the bird’s weight presses it down. If the blue patch looks flat, layer a touch of darker navy along its lower edge for a more feathered, three-dimensional look.
Keep the background soft and blurred so the jay and its blue flash stay the clear focus.
Palette: Cobalt Blue,Soft Brown,White
A forest edge at dawn flips the usual forest composition, since the trees sit along one side of the page while the rest opens onto a plain field of untouched snow. Draw the tree line first, dense and dark along one edge, then let the snow field stretch away bare and pale across the majority of the page, broken only by a faint horizon line.
Shade the trees heaviest where they meet the snow, lightening gradually toward their tops so they do not feel like a flat wall cut across the page. A soft warm glow along the horizon, built with pale pink or peach colored pencil in a thin horizontal band, signals dawn without needing an actual sun drawn in.
If the snow field looks empty, a single faint line of tracks crossing it toward the trees gives the eye something to follow without crowding the open space, which is really the point of this composition. Keep that warm horizon band thin, since too wide a band stops reading as dawn light and starts looking like a painted stripe.
Leave plenty of bare paper in the snow field itself for the coldest, calmest feel on this whole list.
Palette: Peach,Charcoal Grey,White
A couple on snowshoes needs the two figures staggered rather than side by side, so place one slightly ahead and slightly smaller to suggest depth along the trail, with the near figure drawn in more detail than the one following behind. Snowshoes themselves are simple oval frames with a crosshatch pattern inside, sketched flat against the snow beneath each boot.
Shade both coats with a 2B in simple rounded folds, keeping the following figure noticeably softer and lighter in tone than the leading one to reinforce the sense of distance between them. The trail they follow bends once through the pines so the path feels explored rather than drawn with a ruler.
Give the lead figure’s hat or scarf a cranberry red colored pencil accent, letting the second figure’s clothing stay a plain muted gray or brown by contrast, which keeps one clear focal point rather than two competing ones. If the snowshoe prints behind them look too neat, vary their depth and spacing slightly for a more natural trail.
Pines closing in gently on both sides frame the pair without crowding them.
Palette: Cranberry Red,Sepia,White
A ring of mossy stones gives you a quiet, almost abstract subject to close out the smaller scenes on this list. Arrange the stones in a loose, uneven circle rather than a perfect one, varying their size noticeably so the ring reads as natural rather than placed.
Shade each stone’s shadowed underside with a 2B, leaving each snow-capped top as bare white paper, and vary the pencil pressure stone to stone so no two match exactly. A kneaded eraser dabbed lightly over a few snow caps softens any stray graphite that crept onto the white.
Moss green colored pencil worked into the cracks and lower faces of two or three stones, never all of them, keeps the accent feeling found rather than painted on evenly. If the ring looks too tidy, let one stone sit slightly outside the circle’s rhythm, since nature rarely arranges anything in a perfect curve.
A light scatter of fallen pine needles across the snow around the base finishes the quiet, undisturbed feeling.

An ancient oak needs its trunk drawn thick and gnarled from the very first lines, wider at the base than most trees on this list and marked with a few deep vertical furrows in the bark. Sketch the hollow at its base as a dark, irregular opening rather than a neat oval, since real tree hollows form from years of damage and never look tidy.
Shade the bark with a 4B in long, deeply pressed furrows, darkest right around the hollow’s edge where shadow pools thickest, then lighten gradually up the trunk toward the snow-dusted branches above. The branches themselves can stay loose and simple, since the trunk and hollow are doing the real storytelling here.
A small patch of rust or gold colored pencil just inside the hollow, as if catching a last bit of warm light, draws the eye straight to that focal point. If the trunk looks too smooth and young, deepen a few furrows unevenly rather than evenly, since age shows in irregularity, not uniform ridges.
Snow banked against the hollow’s lower lip finishes its weathered, ancient feel.

For more ideas drawing characterful old trees and tucked-away hideaways, the treehouse drawing ideas make a fun next subject.
Icicles hanging from mossy rocks along a creek make a satisfying detailed close to this list, since it combines three textures in one small scene. Draw the rocks first as rounded, overlapping boulders along the creek’s edge, then hang icicles from their lower lips as simple tapering shapes of varied length, some thick and short, others long and thin.
Shade the rocks with a 2B, darker where moss clings in the damp crevices, then switch to a sharper pencil for the icicles themselves, leaving a bright highlight line down one side of each to show their roundness and shine. The creek below gets loose, quick strokes with patches of bare paper for any open, unfrozen water.
Moss green colored pencil worked into the shaded rock crevices is the only color this scene needs, kept small and tucked into shadow rather than spread across the whole rock. If the icicles look flat, deepen the shadow on one side of each and sharpen the highlight on the other, since that contrast is what makes ice look wet and dimensional rather than drawn as plain triangles.
Finish with a light dusting of snow caught on the mossiest rock tops.

What to Do Next
Pick one scene that matches how much time you actually have today, grab a few graphite pencils and a sheet of white paper, and sketch the main shapes first before any shading goes in. Once one forest comes together, the rest of this list is waiting for your next sitting.
Frequently Asked Questions
What pencils do you need for a forest drawing like these?
A range from 2B to 6B covers most of this work: softer leads for deep pine shadow and bark, harder ones for fine detail like antlers or feathers. A blending stump and kneaded eraser round out the kit for smoothing fog and lifting snow highlights.
How do you make snow look realistic in pencil?
Snow usually looks most realistic as bare, untouched white paper rather than anything drawn on top of it. Shade only the shadows that fall across or inside it, and lift stray graphite with a kneaded eraser to keep the brightest areas clean.
How do you add just one color accent to a graphite forest drawing?
Finish the whole scene in pencil first, then add a single small area of colored pencil over the graphite once the shading is settled. Keep the accent to one feature, a scarf, an eye, a wing, so it stays a highlight rather than competing with the gray tones.
How do you keep pine trees from all looking the same in a forest drawing?
Vary each tree’s height, lean and density of needles even within one drawing, and darken trees in the foreground more than those further back. A forest reads as real when no two trees are identical, so resist repeating one template tree across the page.
What is the easiest forest drawing idea for a first attempt?
Animal tracks across fresh snow or a simple woodland path are the easiest starting points, since both rely mostly on bare white paper and a few confident shaded lines rather than detailed trees or animals.
