Candle drawing is one of the quickest ways to fill a page with warmth, because a single flame can carry a whole mood: a reading nook, a snowed-in supper, a sleepy bedtime walk down the hall. Every idea here gives the candlelight something to do, lighting a face, a window, a plate of pasta, rather than just sitting there looking pretty.
Work through the list in order and you will move from a single candle and a simple chair to fuller little scenes with more going on around the flame. Each one is sized to finish in a sitting, with the marker layers and fineliner lines you need laid out so you can start right away.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start with the girl reading in an armchair, because a seated figure and a cluster of candles is the easiest way into this whole list. Rough the chair as a soft rectangle first, then drop the figure into it with simple curved shapes for the knees, back and head tilted toward the book.
Outline everyone in fineliner before any color goes down, keeping the line light around the hair and book edges. Block the chair in chocolate brown, her sweater in cream, then build the pillar candles as a tight little group of cylinders beside her, each with a tiny flame left white until the end.
If the proportions feel off, measure the chair against her body first: the seat back should sit about level with her shoulders, and the armrest with her elbow. Getting that relationship right before you add candles keeps the whole scene believable.
If you do not have a full marker set, two browns and one warm yellow will carry this piece on their own. Finish by dropping a dot of flame yellow with a touch of white gel pen at the very tip of each wick, this single highlight sells the whole glow.

Move from one quiet reader to a shared table: two candles lighting a supper set with soup bowls gives you straight lines and round shapes to balance against each other. Pencil the table edge first as a simple horizontal, then place the two bowls and candlesticks along it before anything else goes in.
Ink the table and dishware with a steady fineliner, then lay cream over the tablecloth and chocolate brown into the bowls and candlesticks. Burgundy works well as a thin band along the table edge or inside the bowls themselves, so the warm palette feels tied together rather than scattered.
Eye level is what makes or breaks a tabletop scene like this: sit slightly above the table so you can see into the bowls, and let both candle flames sit at the same height so the light reads as even across the whole table. A low eye level flattens the bowls and loses the steam and glow entirely.
No burgundy marker on hand, a deep red-brown works just as well mixed from brown and a touch of red. Finish with a short flick of white gel pen along the rim of each bowl to catch the candlelight.
Palette: Cream,Chocolate Brown,Burgundy,Flame Yellow
After a table scene, try something flatter and more graphic: a row of tea lights lined up on a snowy outside window ledge. Draw the ledge as a simple straight shelf first, then space five or six small tea light cups evenly along it with a light pencil mark before inking.
Ink the cups and the window frame behind them, then leave the snow on the ledge as untouched white paper, this is where the marker work earns its keep. Color the window glass in a deep chocolate brown so the tiny flames read as bright against it, and keep every flame the same soft flame yellow.
The trick with a row like this is edges, not shapes: let the snow drifts around each tea light stay soft and rounded rather than sharp, and use a kneaded eraser on any stray pencil lines so the white stays clean. A little smudge of grey marker under each cup suggests a shadow in the snow without any extra drawing.
If your paper is not bright white, a white gel pen can push the snow highlights back up once the marker is dry. One tip to use today: keep every flame the exact same size, it is what makes the row feel calm instead of busy.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Flame Yellow,Cool Grey,Cream
Bring the candle indoors again with something softer: a candle in a jar resting on the edge of a bubble bath, a book propped nearby. Sketch the tub rim as a long curve first, then place the jar candle and the book along it so they sit comfortably without overlapping awkwardly.
Outline the tub, jar and book, then fill the bubbles with loose cream scribbles rather than tight circles, leaving plenty of white paper showing through. Color the candle jar in a warm cream with a chocolate brown lid, and let a soft burgundy cover the book for contrast.
Bubbles are the one part of this scene that can go wrong fast if you overwork them, so stop while they still look loose and irregular. A dry brush stroke of white gel pen skimmed sideways across a few bubble edges gives them a soft sheen without drawing every single one.
If gel pen is not in your kit, a pale cream marker dragged lightly over the white paper does something similar. Finish with the flame as the brightest point in the whole piece, nothing else should compete with it.

Step up to a fuller scene with the family playing cards by candlelight during a snowstorm power cut. Block in three or four simple seated figures around a low table first, keeping heads, shoulders and hands as soft shapes rather than detailed features.
Ink the figures and table loosely, then place one or two candles at the center of the table so the light logically falls on the closest faces and cards. Work chocolate brown into the furniture and clothing, cream into the faces and card backs, and save the burgundy for a cozy throw or sweater somewhere in the group.
With this many figures in one scene, keep every face a simple oval with a hint of a smile and let the candlelight do the storytelling instead of detailed expressions. A frequent mistake here is making the room too bright all over, so let the far corners of the paper stay empty or lightly shaded to keep the eye on the table.
If figures feel daunting, two players instead of four works just as well and finishes faster. One tip for today: draw the candle flames in last, after everything else is colored, so you can judge exactly how strong the glow needs to be.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Burgundy,Flame Yellow
Look at a reference photo of a card table from above if the hand poses feel stiff, it makes the overlap between hands and cards much easier to read.
Shift the focus to an animal for this one: a cat perched on the arm of a reading chair, watching a candle flame nearby. Draw the cat first as a simple curled or seated oval shape, with the head turned toward the candle so the whole pose reads as watching rather than resting.
Ink the cat’s outline with a few confident strokes rather than many short ones, especially along the tail and ears, then add the chair arm beneath it as a soft rounded shape. Color the cat in chocolate brown or a warm cream depending on how you want the contrast against the chair, and keep the candle itself small and bright in the corner of the frame.
Cats are often drawn too stiff, so loosen the spine into a gentle C curve and let one paw hang slightly over the chair arm. If the proportions feel wrong, compare the head width to the body length, a cat’s head is usually close to a quarter of its total curled length.
No cream marker on hand, a pale grey works just as well for a lighter colored cat. Finish by adding a tiny glint of white gel pen in the eye facing the flame, it makes the watching feel alive.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Flame Yellow,Cool Grey
Try a close detail next: a hand striking a match to light a tall taper candle. Sketch the hand loosely first as simple rounded shapes for the knuckles and fingers, holding the match at an angle toward the taper’s wick rather than straight on.
Ink the hand, match and candle with care around the fingers, since this is the part viewers look at first. Color the hand in a warm cream with light chocolate brown shading along the knuckles, then let the taper itself stand in a deep burgundy so it reads clearly against the hand.
Light direction matters enormously here: let the small match flame be the brightest point in the whole piece, casting a warm glow only on the fingers nearest it and leaving the far side of the hand slightly cooler. This single choice is what makes the moment feel like it is actually about to happen.
If hands feel tricky to draw, simplify to four rounded shapes for the fingers and one for the thumb rather than detailed knuckles. One tip for today: draw the match flame slightly larger than you think it should be, a tiny flame reads as unlit.
Palette: Cream,Chocolate Brown,Burgundy,Flame Yellow
Take the candle outside for a wider view: ice lanterns with candles lining a snowy garden path. Draw the path first as two converging lines leading back into the page, then place rounded ice lantern shapes along both sides, getting smaller as they recede.
Ink each lantern as a simple dome or bucket shape with a candle glowing inside, then fill the path and surrounding ground in untouched white paper for snow. Color the lanterns themselves in a very pale cream or cool grey so they read as ice rather than solid stone, and let flame yellow glow out from inside each one.
Perspective is the whole trick with a path like this: make the lanterns nearest the bottom of the page noticeably larger than the ones further back, and keep them evenly spaced so the eye travels smoothly into the distance. A common mistake is keeping every lantern the same size, which flattens the whole path.
If you want a quicker version, four lanterns along one side of the path finishes in half the time and still reads clearly. Finish each flame with a touch of white gel pen right where it meets the ice for a convincing glow through the shell.
Palette: Cool Grey,Cream,Flame Yellow,Chocolate Brown
Move into the craft side of candles with a candle-making table scattered with wax, wicks and empty jars. Lay out the table surface first as a simple flat plane, then place three or four jars, a small block of wax and a coil of wick loosely across it before inking anything.
Ink each object with clean, separate outlines so the clutter still reads clearly, then color the jars in pale cream and the raw wax blocks in a warmer honey tone mixed from your flame yellow and a touch of cream. Keep the wooden table in chocolate brown to ground the whole scene.
For the quick version, three objects, one jar, one wax block, one wick coil, finishes in ten minutes and still tells the story. Given forty minutes, add a second row further back with a finished candle already set and glowing, which gives the eye a before and after to follow across the page.
If you do not have an actual reference nearby, a simple glass jar shape with straight sides is forgiving enough to repeat without it looking off. One tip for today: leave the wick coil as a loose squiggle of ink rather than a tidy line, it reads more like real string.
Palette: Cream,Chocolate Brown,Flame Yellow,Burgundy
Follow the making theme with a single action shot: a beeswax candle being dipped into a pot of melted wax. Draw the pot first as a simple rounded container, then add the hanging candle just above it, suspended by a thread or rod so it looks mid-dip rather than resting.
Ink the pot, candle and any steam rising from the wax, then color the melted wax itself in a warm honey tone, a mix of flame yellow with a touch of chocolate brown, so it reads as liquid rather than solid. The candle hanging above stays a paler cream to contrast against the dark pot.
Texture is everything in this one: use a dry brush stroke with your marker nearly out of ink to drag a few streaky highlights across the wax surface, which reads as the glossy sheen of melted wax far better than flat, even color. Keep the steam as loose, curling pencil-thin lines rather than solid shapes.
No honey-toned marker, blending yellow and brown directly on the paper works fine if you work quickly before either dries. Finish with a thin white gel pen line along the top edge of the wax pot to suggest the rim catching light.
Palette: Flame Yellow,Chocolate Brown,Cream,Burgundy
Head back outside for a quiet landscape moment: a lantern with a candle hanging on a cabin porch in snow. Sketch the porch post and roofline first as simple straight structures, then hang the lantern from a hook partway down the post so it sits naturally in the frame.
Ink the cabin structure and lantern, keeping the wood grain suggested with just a few short lines rather than drawn in full. Color the cabin wood in chocolate brown, the snow as untouched white paper, and let the lantern glow in flame yellow against the darker porch behind it.
Since the porch sits in shadow while the lantern is the only light source, keep everything beyond a small radius around the lantern in cooler, darker tones, chocolate brown shading toward near-black at the corners of the page. This single contrast is what makes a cabin at night feel believably lit by one small flame rather than daylight with a lantern added on top.
If a full cabin feels like too much, crop in tighter on just the post, lantern and a patch of snow below it. One tip for today: let a few flakes of falling snow cross directly in front of the lantern glow, catching the light as tiny white gel pen dots.

Bring some celebration into the list: a winter birthday cake with lit candles carried to the table. Draw the cake first as a simple rounded tier shape held slightly tilted in two hands, then space five or six small candles evenly across the top before inking.
Ink the cake, hands and candles, keeping the frosting edge slightly wavy rather than perfectly smooth for a handmade look. Color the cake in cream with a chocolate brown base layer for the sponge showing at the bottom edge, and let each tiny flame burn flame yellow against the pale frosting.
A frequent mistake with a cake like this is making it look flat, so shade one side slightly darker in cream to suggest the curve of the tier, and let the candles lean very slightly in different directions as real candles do rather than standing in a perfectly straight row.
If six candles feels fiddly, three larger ones space out just as well and read clearly from a distance. Finish with a thin ring of white gel pen dots around the frosting edge like a simple piped border, it finishes the cake without adding real detail work.
Palette: Cream,Chocolate Brown,Flame Yellow,Burgundy
Settle into a still life now: candles on a mantelpiece alongside framed photos and a vase. Draw the mantel shelf as one long straight line first, then arrange two or three candles, a small vase and a framed photo along it with varied heights so nothing lines up too evenly.
Ink each object separately before adding any color, then work chocolate brown into the mantel and frames, cream into the candles, and a touch of burgundy into the vase or a ribbon somewhere in the arrangement. Keep the fireplace surround simple, a plain rectangle is enough.
With several objects of different heights side by side, a quick trick keeps proportions honest: hold your pencil up against the drawing and compare the vase height to the candle height before you ink anything, adjusting the sketch until the relationship looks right. Rushing straight to ink is where mantel scenes usually go wrong.
If a full vase of flowers feels like too much extra work, a single stem in the vase reads just as well as a full bouquet. One tip for today: let only one or two candles actually have a visible flame, a mantel with every candle lit looks busier than it needs to.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Burgundy,Flame Yellow
Bring the mood back to one person with a woman journaling by a single candle at her desk. Sketch the desk surface and her seated figure first, keeping the posture slightly leaning forward over the page as if mid-thought, then place the candle just to one side of the notebook rather than directly behind it.
Ink the figure, desk and candle, then color her sweater in burgundy or chocolate brown and the notebook pages in cream. Let the candle sit close enough to the page that its glow can believably fall across the paper she is writing on.
Since the candle is the only light source here, let the side of her face nearest the flame stay pale and warm while the far side and the room behind her fade into shadow built from layered chocolate brown. This single choice does more to set the mood than any amount of extra detail in the room.
If a full figure feels like too much, crop the scene to just her hand, the notebook and the candle beside it. One tip for today: add a small pool of warm color on the desk directly beneath the candle before you ink the notebook lines, it keeps the glow looking grounded rather than floating.
Palette: Burgundy,Cream,Chocolate Brown,Flame Yellow
Try a small object study next: a candle poured into a vintage teacup resting on a dresser. Draw the teacup first with its saucer beneath it, keeping the handle as a simple curved loop, then add the candle wax filling it almost to the rim with a small wick standing in the center.
Ink the teacup’s pattern lightly, a few simple floral lines are enough, then color the cup in cream with small burgundy accents for the pattern and the wax itself in a slightly warmer cream so it reads as a different material from the china.
For the quick version, the teacup and candle alone finish in well under ten minutes. Given more time, add the dresser surface beneath it with a small mirror or jewelry box nearby, which turns the single object into a fuller little still life without much extra drawing.
If you do not have a patterned teacup to reference, a plain cup with a single thin colored stripe near the rim is an easy stand-in. One tip for today: keep the melted wax pool around the wick slightly uneven rather than a perfect circle, real poured wax never sets perfectly flat.
Palette: Cream,Burgundy,Flame Yellow,Chocolate Brown
Draw the ending of a flame for once: a snuffer putting out a candle with a curl of smoke rising. Sketch the candle and its holder first, then bring the snuffer’s cone shape down close to the wick at a slight angle, as if caught just before it touches.
Ink the candle, snuffer and a single curling line of smoke rising from the wick, then color the snuffer’s handle in chocolate brown or a soft brass tone and the candle itself in cream. Keep the flame small and dim compared to other pieces in this list, since it is about to go out.
Smoke is the detail that makes or breaks this one: draw it as one continuous wavering line rather than several short strokes, letting it thin out and fade as it rises, and leave it as untouched white paper or the faintest grey rather than a solid color. Overworking the smoke with too much shading is the most common way this idea loses its lightness.
No brass-toned marker, a mix of chocolate brown and a touch of flame yellow suggests metal well enough. Finish with the faintest ring of grey marker right at the wick to show the last bit of heat before the smoke fully fades.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Cool Grey,Flame Yellow
Return to a shared table for a fuller candlelit dinner for two, set with pasta and red wine. Lay out the table first with two plates, a candle between them and two wine glasses, keeping the composition symmetrical around the central flame.
Ink the plates, glasses and candle carefully, then color the pasta in warm cream and chocolate brown tones and the wine in a rich burgundy that echoes the candle’s warmth. Let the tablecloth stay a plain cream so the food and glasses stand out clearly against it.
This is a good one to repeat with small variations: next time, swap the pasta for a simple cheese board, or push the two plates closer together with hands reaching toward each other across the table, or try the same setup from directly overhead instead of at eye level. Small changes like these keep a familiar setup feeling fresh. If couples and quiet shared moments interest you as a subject, the couple sketchbook ideas cover plenty more scenes like this one.
If red wine marker runs dry mid-piece, a strong burgundy colored pencil layered over a lighter marker base works as a stand-in. One tip for today: let the wine glass highlights stay pure white paper, untouched glass highlights read far more convincingly than colored ones.
Palette: Burgundy,Cream,Chocolate Brown,Flame Yellow
Soften the mood with floating candles in a glass bowl scattered with rose petals. Draw the bowl first as a simple rounded container seen slightly from above, then place three or four small floating candles across the water’s surface with a scatter of petal shapes drifting between them.
Ink the bowl, candles and petals, then color the water in the palest cream or left as white paper with just a few soft grey ripple lines, and let the petals sit in burgundy against it. Each tiny flame stays bright flame yellow, the warmest point in the whole piece.
If this is your first time drawing water in a bowl, keep the ripples simple: a few short curved lines radiating gently out from each floating candle is enough to suggest movement without overworking the surface. Too many lines makes the water look solid rather than liquid.
No petal reference handy, simple rounded teardrop shapes scattered loosely work fine as a stand-in for rose petals. Finish with a thin white gel pen line along the rim of the bowl where it catches the candlelight.
Palette: Burgundy,Cream,Flame Yellow,Cool Grey
Bring in a quieter animal moment: a bedside candle glowing beside a sleeping dog. Sketch the dog first, curled into a simple rounded shape on a rug or blanket, then place the candle on a small table or the floor just beside it, close enough that the light falls across the dog’s fur.
Ink the dog’s outline in a few smooth, continuous strokes rather than many short choppy ones, especially along the curve of the back and tail. Color the fur in chocolate brown with cream highlights where the candlelight hits it directly, and keep the blanket beneath in a soft cream or burgundy.
Since the candle sits low and close, the light falls across the dog from one side only, so keep that side noticeably warmer and brighter while the far side of the body fades into shadow. Skipping this contrast is the easiest way to lose the cozy, lit-from-one-side feeling that makes this idea work.
If your dog breed reference is more detailed than you want to draw, simplify to a smooth rounded body with just a suggestion of ear and tail shape, texture can wait for a future piece. One tip for today: leave a soft cream outline glow around the whole dog shape where the candlelight meets the dark background.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Burgundy,Flame Yellow
Try a calmer, more graphic scene: a Scandinavian-style window with a single candle and a white linen curtain. Draw the window frame first as clean straight lines, then place one simple candle on the sill with the curtain hanging in soft folds to one side, leaving plenty of open space in the frame.
Ink the window, candle and curtain with minimal extra detail, keeping the whole composition simple and uncluttered in the Scandinavian spirit. Color the frame in chocolate brown, the curtain in the palest cream, and let the one candle flame be the only strong warm note in an otherwise quiet, cool-toned piece.
If this is your first time drawing curtain folds, keep them to three or four long, simple curves rather than many small wrinkles, since a calm scene like this reads better with fewer folds, drawn with confidence rather than lots of fussy lines.
No linen-white paper on hand, any light cream marker used very sparingly over white paper gives the same soft effect. Finish with a single thin strip of flame yellow light spilling from the candle onto the sill, it is the one warm touch the whole piece needs.
Palette: Cream,Chocolate Brown,Flame Yellow,Cool Grey
Narrow the focus to a small object: a little house-shaped candle holder glowing on a windowsill. Draw the house shape first as a simple square body with a triangular roof, cutting a small window shape out of the front where the candlelight will shine through.
Ink the house holder and the windowsill beneath it, then color the body in chocolate brown or cream depending on the material you picture, with the cut-out window left bright with flame yellow glowing through from the candle hidden inside.
Measuring this one carefully matters more than it looks: keep the roof height roughly half the height of the main body, and center the little window opening so the light reads as balanced rather than lopsided. A roof that is too tall or a window placed off to one side is the easiest way this small shape starts to look wrong.
If a plain house shape feels too simple, add a tiny chimney or a second small window cut-out for variety. One tip for today: let the glow spill out onto the windowsill itself in a soft warm patch, it grounds the little house in its setting instead of leaving it floating.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Flame Yellow,Cream,Cool Grey
Pair the candle with an instrument: a candle lighting a sheet of music propped on a piano. Draw the piano’s edge and music stand first as simple straight shapes, then place the open sheet music at an angle on the stand with the candle positioned close beside it.
Ink the piano, stand and sheet music, keeping the printed notes as a few loose dashes and dots rather than drawn in full detail. Color the piano in deep chocolate brown, the sheet music in cream, and let the candlelight fall across the page in a soft warm patch where flame yellow meets the cream paper.
Since the candle sits right beside the music, the light should fall strongest on the half of the page nearest the flame, fading toward the far edge of the sheet. Skipping this gradient is the most common reason a piece like this looks flat instead of lit.
If a full piano feels too ambitious, crop the scene down to just the music stand, sheet and candle, leaving the rest of the instrument implied beyond the edge of the page. One tip for today: a few simple diagonal dashes for notes read as sheet music from a distance without needing real musical notation.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Flame Yellow,Burgundy
Return to a fireside scene with chunky pillar candles arranged on a stone hearth beside the fire. Draw the hearth first as a simple stacked stone shape, then place three or four pillar candles of varying heights along the top edge, with the fireplace opening and flames just beside or below them.
Ink the stones, candles and fire, then color the hearth in chocolate brown with lighter cream patches to suggest individual stones, and let the candles themselves stay cream or pale burgundy so they read as separate from the warmer fire glow nearby.
With two light sources in one scene, the fire and the candles, keep the fire’s glow a slightly deeper, more orange-leaning warm tone while the candle flames stay a cleaner flame yellow, so the eye can tell the two apart even though both are warm. Letting them blend into one indistinct glow is the easiest mistake here.
If stacking individual stones feels fiddly, a few simple irregular rectangles stacked loosely reads as a stone hearth without precise masonry. One tip for today: vary the candle heights clearly, no two pillar candles the same height, it keeps the grouping visually interesting.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Burgundy,Flame Yellow
Bring a figure back into motion with a girl in a nightgown carrying a candle in a brass holder down a dim hallway. Sketch her first as a simple standing figure in profile or three-quarter view, arm extended slightly forward with the candle holder held out ahead of her.
Ink the figure and candle holder, keeping the nightgown’s folds loose and simple with just a few long curved lines. Color the nightgown in pale cream, the candle holder in a warm chocolate brown mixed with a touch of flame yellow to suggest brass, and let the candle flame itself light her face from below.
Lighting a face from below with a handheld candle is a nice change from the usual side-lit scenes elsewhere in this list: keep the warm glow concentrated under the chin and along the lower edge of the nose, with the top of the head and the hallway above fading into shadow. It gives the whole figure a gentle, storybook quality.
If a full standing figure feels ambitious, crop to just her hand, the candle holder and the lit side of her face. One tip for today: let the hallway behind her stay almost entirely dark chocolate brown, the contrast is what makes the candlelight feel believable.
Palette: Cream,Chocolate Brown,Flame Yellow,Burgundy
Take the candle outdoors again for a smaller, quieter setup: a candle and a pot of cocoa on a snowy balcony table. Draw the small round table first, then place the candle and the cocoa pot close together on top of it, with a little steam rising from the pot’s spout.
Ink the table, candle and cocoa pot, then color the pot in chocolate brown with a cream handle and lid, and let the candle’s flame yellow glow sit just beside it. Keep the balcony railing and the snow beyond it simple, mostly untouched white paper with just a few light grey shadow lines.
For the quick version, the table, candle and cocoa pot alone finish in well under ten minutes and already tell a complete little story. Given more time, add a mug waiting beside the pot and a blanket draped over the chair, which fills out the scene without needing a figure at all.
If cocoa pots are not something you have drawn before, a simple rounded teapot shape with a straight spout is an easy stand-in. One tip for today: let the steam from the cocoa and the candle’s glow overlap slightly in the air between them, it ties the two warm elements together.
Palette: Chocolate Brown,Cream,Flame Yellow,Cool Grey
Slow the mood down with a burgundy taper in a brass candlestick resting next to a sealed letter. Draw the candlestick first as a simple stepped base with the tall taper rising from it, then place a folded letter with a wax seal just beside the base, angled slightly toward the viewer.
Ink the candlestick, taper and letter carefully, especially the small round wax seal, since it is the detail viewers will look at closely. Color the taper in a rich burgundy, the candlestick in chocolate brown mixed with a touch of flame yellow for the brass, and the letter itself in cream with the seal picked out in deeper burgundy.
If this is your first time drawing a wax seal, keep it simple: a plain circle with a few short radiating lines pressed into it reads convincingly without needing an actual stamped design. Overworking the seal with too much detail is the easiest way to make it look cluttered instead of neat.
No deep burgundy marker on hand, layering a red marker under a thin wash of brown gets close. One tip for today: let the candle’s glow fall just slightly onto the letter’s surface, it quietly suggests someone has been reading it by candlelight.
Palette: Burgundy,Chocolate Brown,Cream,Flame Yellow
Go back outdoors for a hanging detail: tea lights in mason jars suspended from a snowy tree branch. Draw the branch first as a simple curved line crossing the page, then hang two or three small mason jars from it on thin string or wire, each with a tea light glowing inside.
Ink the branch, jars and hanging strings, then color the jars in the palest cream so the glass reads as nearly clear, letting flame yellow glow out from inside each one. Keep the branch itself in chocolate brown with small patches of white left for snow sitting along its top edge.
Perspective matters here even on a small scale: let the jars hang at slightly different lengths rather than all level, and make the nearest jar a touch larger than the ones further along the branch so the row still reads as receding slightly rather than flat.
If hanging jars by string feels fiddly to draw convincingly, a single thin straight line for each string, drawn confidently rather than slowly, looks far more natural than a careful wobbly one. One tip for today: let snow sit along the top of the branch only, never underneath it, gravity makes that the believable choice.
Palette: Cream,Flame Yellow,Chocolate Brown,Cool Grey
Bring the scene into a public, cozy setting: a candle glowing in a cafe window on a snowy afternoon. Draw the window frame first, then place a small table just inside it with a single candle, perhaps alongside a cup or a small plant, keeping snow falling gently outside the glass.
Ink the window frame, table and candle, then color the glass in a cool pale grey-blue to suggest cold daylight outside, while the candle and table inside stay warm in cream and flame yellow. This contrast between the cool exterior and warm interior is really the whole point of the piece.
If you have drawn a cafe window scene before for a different season, this is worth trying as a variation: keep the same basic composition but swap the warm interior glow for this one’s colder, snowier palette outside, which makes an easy way to build a small series from one layout.
If a full exterior street view feels too ambitious, a plain soft grey wash behind the glass with a few simple falling snow dots is enough to read as outside. One tip for today: leave a narrow strip of condensation, drawn as faint wavy lines, along the bottom of the window glass for a realistic cafe window touch. For more ideas built around glowing windows at this time of year, the Christmas window drawing ideas are worth a look too.
Palette: Cream,Flame Yellow,Cool Grey,Chocolate Brown
Return indoors to a quiet woman knitting by candlelight with a cat curled on her lap. Sketch her seated figure first with the knitting held in both hands, then add the cat as a simple curled shape settled across her lap before placing the candle on a small table beside the chair.
Ink the figure, cat and candle, then color her cardigan in burgundy or chocolate brown, the cat in a contrasting cream or brown, and let the yarn in her hands pick up a soft warm tone echoing the candlelight nearby.
With two different textures close together, soft yarn and soft fur, a light dry brush stroke with your marker nearly out of ink works well for both: drag it loosely across the cat’s back and the ball of yarn to suggest texture without drawing individual strands. Pressing too hard here flattens both textures into solid blocks of color.
If knitting needles feel fiddly to draw accurately, two simple straight lines crossing at an angle, held loosely in the hands, is all the detail this scene needs. One tip for today: let the candle sit close enough that its glow reaches both the yarn and the cat’s fur, tying the whole quiet scene together under one light.
Palette: Burgundy,Cream,Chocolate Brown,Flame Yellow
Go back to the craft table for a finished piece: a homemade candle with pressed flowers set into the wax. Draw the candle itself first as a simple cylinder, then place two or three small pressed flower shapes partway up its side, as though embedded just beneath the surface of the wax.
Ink the candle outline and flower shapes, keeping the flowers simple, flat silhouettes rather than detailed blooms, since they are meant to read as pressed and slightly translucent. Color the candle body in a soft cream, then layer a very light wash of color behind each flower shape, pale burgundy or a muted gold, so they feel set into the wax rather than drawn on top of it.
This idea pairs nicely with simple pressed botanical shapes you may already have practice drawing: if daffodils or other early spring blooms are familiar ground for you, the same loose, flattened flower shapes transfer easily here, and the daffodil drawing ideas are a good place to borrow a shape or two from.
The trick that sells the embedded look is restraint: keep the flower colors noticeably softer and more muted than they would be if drawn on paper directly, almost as if seen through a thin layer of wax. Too much saturation makes them look stuck on top rather than set inside.
If pressed flowers are unfamiliar to draw, simple flattened leaf or petal shapes without too much detail work just as well as a stand-in. One tip for today: add the wick and a small flame last, so the candle itself gets full attention before the flame competes for it.
Palette: Cream,Burgundy,Flame Yellow,Chocolate Brown
Close in on a tender bedtime moment: a sleepy child blowing out a candle before sleep. Sketch the child’s face and shoulders first, cheeks rounded and slightly puffed as if mid-blow, with the candle held close in front of them, flame already leaning away from the breath.
Ink the face and candle, then color the skin in warm cream with a touch of flame yellow reflected on the cheeks nearest the flame. Keep the surrounding room dark in chocolate brown so the candlelit face is the clear focus of the whole piece.
If this is your first time drawing a face this close up, keep the features soft and simple: two small closed or almost-closed eyes, a round little mouth, and no harsh lines anywhere, since a sleepy bedtime face should feel gentle rather than sharply detailed.
No close-up face reference handy, a simple round head shape with features kept to soft curves rather than precise anatomy carries the moment just fine at this level. One tip for today: angle the flame itself leaning sideways, caught mid-flicker from the breath, it is what makes the moment feel like an action rather than a still object.

Try a trickier light study: candle flames reflected in a frosty window at dusk. Draw the window frame and its frosty texture first using small irregular ice-crystal shapes scattered across the glass, then place one or two candles just inside, with a faint mirrored version of each flame appearing on the glass itself.
Ink the frost pattern lightly so it does not overwhelm the piece, then color the window in a cool grey-blue and the candles in cream and flame yellow. The reflected flames on the glass should be a softer, slightly blurred version of the real ones, using a lighter touch with the same yellow marker.
Reflections are the real challenge here: keep the mirrored flame slightly smaller and less distinct than the actual candle, and offset it slightly to one side rather than placing it in an exact mirrored spot, since glass reflections are rarely perfectly aligned. Making the reflection too crisp and identical is the most common way this idea stops looking convincing.
If frost patterns feel difficult to invent, a white gel pen flicked lightly across cool grey marker creates a convincing scatter of ice crystals with very little drawing. One tip for today: let the dusk sky beyond the window fade from deep chocolate brown at the top to a paler cool grey near the bottom, it adds depth without any extra objects.

Finish the list in a warm kitchen: a spice-scented candle on the counter beside a cooling cake. Draw the cake first on its cooling rack, a simple rounded loaf or layer shape, then place the candle just beside it with a soft wisp of rising scent drawn as a few loose curling lines above the wick.
Ink the cake, rack and candle, then color the cake in chocolate brown with a cream crumb showing where it has been sliced, and let the candle itself sit in a warm burgundy or deep cream to suggest a spiced scent like cinnamon or clove. Keep the counter surface simple so the two main objects hold the attention.
Now that you have worked through flames in bedrooms, kitchens, gardens and cafe windows across this list, this final piece is a good one to vary freely: try it with a teapot instead of a cake, or move the whole scene to a windowsill instead of a counter, using the same candle and the same warm palette you have been building all along.
If a full cake feels like too much, a few cooling cookies on the rack beside the candle tell the same cozy kitchen story with less drawing. One tip for today: let the steam from the cake and the scent lines from the candle curl in roughly the same direction, it ties the two warm elements of the scene together naturally.

What to Do Next
Pick one idea that matches the mood you want today, start with a light pencil sketch, then ink and color in the order each entry walks through. A single candle on a sheet of smooth marker paper is enough to begin, the rest of the scene can always grow around it next time.
Frequently Asked Questions
What markers work best for candle drawing scenes like these?
Alcohol-based markers work best because they blend smoothly without streaking, which matters for soft candle glow. Build color in light layers over a dry fineliner outline, and keep a warm yellow and a dark brown on hand for every scene.
How do you make a candle flame look like it is actually glowing?
Leave the brightest part of the flame as untouched white paper or the palest yellow, then build slightly darker warm tones outward from it. A faint halo of warm color spreading onto nearby objects sells the glow more than the flame shape itself.
What is the easiest candle drawing idea to start with for a beginner?
A single candle in a simple holder, like the teacup or house-shaped candle holder ideas on this list, is the easiest starting point. Fewer objects mean fewer proportions to manage while you get used to blending the glow.
How do you keep a candlelit room from looking too dark or too flat?
Keep one clear light source and let its warmth fade gradually into cooler, darker tones toward the edges of the page. A scene that is evenly lit all over loses the cozy, single-flame feeling these ideas rely on.
Can these candle drawing ideas be drawn without colored markers?
Yes, every idea works in graphite or colored pencil, since the real subject is light and shadow rather than any one medium. Keep the same approach: brightest point at the wick, shadows built up gradually outward from there.
