32 Christmas Candle Painting Ideas With Taper Candles, Brass Candelabras and Warm Glow

40

Christmas candle painting ideas are really an excuse to paint light itself, and that is exactly why they are so satisfying. A single flame against a dark room gives you everything a painter loves: a true dark, a true bright, and every warm color in between fighting it out at the edges.

Below you will find thirty two candlelit moments, from one clean taper in a brass holder to a whole stone house glowing window by window. Scroll until something catches you, mix a small pile of warm colors, and let the rest of the room go dark around it.

Start with the brass tulip candelabra, since its curved arms give you a simple frame to hang every candle from. Sketch the candelabra lightly in thinned burnt umber, keeping the tulip cups and curling arms loose rather than exact, then block in the deep background first so the brass has something dark to glow against.

Paint the taper candles next in warm cream, leaving the top inch of each one unpainted until you add the flame, and let the brass pick up streaks of gold ochre and burnt sienna where the light hits it hardest. The trap here is painting every candle the same brightness: let one or two sit further back in shadow so the nearest candle reads as the star of the piece.

Measure the candles against the candelabra arms before you commit to paint, since tapers that run too short or too tall will throw the whole piece off balance. If you do not have brass tones in your set, gold ochre mixed with a touch of burnt umber stands in well.

Finish with one bright fleck of pale yellow at each wick and nowhere else.

You Will Need

• toned canvas board
• small and medium filbert brushes
• burnt umber and gold ochre oils
• painting rag
• ruler for proportions

Palette: Cream,Gold Ochre,Burnt Umber,Deep Burgundy

Reference a real brass candlestick under a lamp if you have one, since brass picks up reflected color from everything nearby and that detail sells the metal far more than yellow paint alone.

Build this one from the window back, since the cold blue snow outside has to feel like a different temperature from the warm room inside. Block the window first in a muted grey blue, add soft falling snow with a few dry dabs of white, then darken the whole room around it before you place the woman.

Keep her figure simple: a seated silhouette, head tilted toward an open book, lit mostly on one side by the candle beside her. Painting her face too crisp is the usual mistake, since candlelight softens everything it touches, so keep her features suggested rather than drawn and let the glow do the work on her cheek and the page.

Eye level sits low, close to the candle itself, so the flame reads as the brightest point and the window light stays secondary and cool behind her. If you want a quicker version, skip the book and let her hands simply rest near a cup, which saves you painting fingers around pages.

Warm her nearest cheek and let the far side of her face disappear into shadow entirely.

You Will Need

• medium canvas
• round brush for the figure
• titanium white for snow
• payne’s grey for the window
• soft rag

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Warm Amber,Titanium White,Burgundy

Look at a photograph of a single lamp lit at night for how light falls off a face unevenly, then exaggerate that falloff a little further than seems natural in your painting.

Move from a single flame to a pair with the advent wreath, where two lit candles sit among dark pine and a few unlit candles waiting their turn. Lay the pine ring in first with a dry, broken brush so the needles stay loose and textural rather than smooth, then place all four candles before any flame goes in.

Light only two of them, and paint the unlit pair slightly duller and cooler so the eye goes straight to the burning ones. The dry brush trick that saves the pine: load very little paint on a stiff bristle brush and drag it sideways across the ring, which breaks the paint into needle-like streaks far faster than painting each needle by hand.

Keep the red berries or ribbon, if you add any, small and few, since too much color competition pulls focus from the candle glow. No stiff bristle brush on hand just means an old toothbrush works almost as well for that same dry texture.

Paint the two lit wicks last, each with a tiny halo of warm light bleeding into the dark pine.

You Will Need

• stiff bristle brush for pine texture
• dark green and burnt umber oils
• small red for berries
• medium canvas

Palette: Pine Green,Burnt Umber,Warm Gold,Berry Red

Keep the two unlit candles a shade cooler and greyer than the lit ones, since that small temperature gap does more to show which candles are burning than any amount of detail.

Treat the stone house as one dark shape first, blocked in with cool greys and umbers, since every window will later punch warm light straight through that darkness. Mark out the window positions lightly before adding any glow, keeping them a little uneven in size the way real old windows often are.

Paint each window with a soft warm core fading into the cooler stone around its edges, and vary the brightness slightly from window to window so the house does not look like a single flat grid of light. The place this goes wrong is making every window identical: let one glow brighter, one dimmer, one with a faint silhouette of a candle visible inside.

Working at eye level looking slightly up at the house makes the glowing windows feel grander and the snow in the foreground recede naturally below. For a quicker version, paint only three or four windows glowing rather than the whole facade, which still reads as a warm winter house in far less time.

Finish with a few flecks of white for snow caught in the window light.

You Will Need

• medium to large canvas
• grey and umber oils for stone
• gold ochre for window glow
• fan brush for snow texture

Palette: Cool Grey,Stone Umber,Window Gold,Snow White

Step back from the canvas every few minutes while placing the windows, since uneven glow across a facade only reads correctly from a small distance, the same way it would outdoors at night.

Set the long dinner table down the length of the canvas so the candles march toward the viewer in a row, each one slightly smaller than the last as the table recedes. Block the tablecloth in deep burgundy or cream first, then place the candle bases evenly spaced before any flame or wax detail goes in.

Measure the gaps between candles against the first one you paint, since a row that drifts closer together or further apart toward the back will flatten the sense of a long table rather than help it. Keep the nearest candle the brightest and most detailed, letting the furthest ones soften into simple warm smudges of light.

A runner of greenery or a few plates sketched loosely between the candles adds life without demanding real detail. If a long table feels like too much canvas, four candles instead of eight still reads as a dinner table, just a shorter one.

Let the red wax catch a single streak of warm highlight down one side of each candle.

You Will Need

• long or wide canvas
• deep red oil for candles
• burgundy for the cloth
• small brush for highlights

Palette: Candle Red,Burgundy Cloth,Warm Gold,Cream Highlight

Try a near aerial angle instead of straight on for variety, looking slightly down the table so every candle flame sits at a slightly different height across the canvas.

This quieter scene works well after a busy table, since it is just one small jar candle sitting on cold stone steps. Paint the stone step first in cool greys, add a thin layer of snow with dry dabbed white, then place the glass jar before any glow goes inside it.

The glass is the real challenge here: paint the jar mostly as the dark stone behind it, then add the warm glow inside and let only a few cool highlights of reflected white snow sit on the glass surface itself. Too much reflection and the jar looks like a mirror rather than glass holding a flame, so keep highlights sparse and small.

Working close to the ground, almost at step level, makes the single candle feel intimate rather than lost in a big scene. If glass feels tricky, a simple lantern shape with visible metal edges is an easier swap that still holds the same warm light.

Finish with a soft orange glow bleeding faintly onto the snow right around the jar’s base.

You Will Need

• small canvas or panel
• cool grey and white for snow
• amber for the glow
• fine brush for glass highlights

Palette: Snow Grey,Jar Amber,Stone Grey,Warm White

Paint the snow around the jar’s base with the faintest wash of warm orange fading into cool blue grey, since light never stops sharply at the edge of its source in real life.

Shift indoors now to a softer, steamier scene: a clawfoot or simple bathtub ringed with lit candles and sprigs of pine along its edge. Block the dark bathroom first, then the pale tub shape, and only after that place each small candle along the rim so their glow has somewhere dark to land.

Vary the candle heights along the tub edge rather than lining them up evenly, since a slightly uneven row looks placed by hand rather than by ruler. Dry brush a little steam rising from the water in soft grey white strokes, keeping it loose and barely there so it reads as warmth rather than fog.

The quick ten minute version keeps just three candles and skips the pine; the fuller forty minute version adds pine sprigs tucked between candles and a faint reflection of flame on the water’s surface. No pine sprigs to reference means a few loose dark green dabs read as greenery just as well.

Let the water catch one soft streak of reflected candlelight down its center.

You Will Need

• medium canvas
• titanium white for the tub
• dark green for pine
• soft brush for steam

Palette: Tub White,Pine Green,Candle Amber,Water Shadow

Keep the whole room dark except the ring of candlelight, since a lit bathroom behind the tub will fight the candles for attention and flatten the cozy mood you are after.

Painting a cat beside candlelight is really a study in how fur catches warm light along one edge while staying dark everywhere else. Block the cat’s silhouette first in near black, keeping the shape simple and the pose relaxed, sitting or curled rather than mid-movement.

Compare the cat’s head size against the candle beside it before adding detail, since a cat painted too large will dwarf the flame and a cat too small will look like an afterthought. Add the warm rim light along the cat’s back and ear edges with a single thin dry brush stroke, letting the rest of the fur stay a dark, soft mass rather than painting individual hairs.

The eyes catch the most light of anywhere on the cat, so save two tiny bright dots for last, after the fur and the candle glow are both finished. If a sitting cat feels tricky to draw, a curled sleeping cat is an easier shape and skips the challenge of paws entirely.

Keep the candle slightly out of focus compared to the cat so the animal remains the clear subject.

You Will Need

• small to medium canvas
• black and burnt umber for fur
• fine brush for eye highlights
• dry brush for rim light

Palette: Black Fur,Warm Rim Light,Amber Eyes,Deep Shadow

Reference a photograph of any dark animal near a lamp at night to see exactly where rim light lands, since it rarely sits where you expect until you look closely.

Give the candle itself a supporting character this time: an ornate vintage candlestick wrapped with a velvet bow. Paint the candlestick’s metal first in cool silvery greys or aged brass tones, working from its darkest crevices out to its highest polished points before any bow goes on top.

The velvet bow needs almost no detail to read as fabric: block it in deep burgundy or forest green, then drag a dry brush lightly over the surface to break up the paint and suggest velvet’s soft, light-absorbing texture. Painting velvet too smooth and shiny is the easy mistake, since velvet actually reflects very little light compared to satin or silk.

Keep the candlestick ornate details loose rather than carved in precisely, suggesting curls and flourishes with a few confident strokes instead of tracing every curve. If velvet ribbon is not available to reference, any matte dark fabric photo works just as well for how the folds fall.

Finish with one warm highlight along the candlestick’s tallest edge, caught by the flame above it.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• silver and gold oils for metal
• burgundy for velvet
• dry stiff brush for texture

Palette: Aged Brass,Velvet Burgundy,Candle Cream,Deep Shadow

Try forest green velvet instead of burgundy for variety, since the cooler color sits differently against warm candlelight and gives a second, equally cozy mood.

Capture the exact moment of lighting rather than a candle already burning, with a hand holding a lit match to an unlit wick. Draw the hand loosely first in simple shapes, a few fingers and the match held between two of them, since overworking hand anatomy here will cost you the softness the scene needs.

The light source actually comes from the tiny match flame itself at this stage, so let it cast the warmest, smallest glow onto the fingertips and the unlit wick just beside it. This is the trickiest light source in the whole list because it is so small: keep the glow radius tight, no bigger than a thumbnail, and let everything past that fall into shadow fast.

Work at close range, almost as if your own eye is the one holding the match, which makes the small flame feel intimate rather than distant. If hands feel difficult, crop the composition to just fingertips and match, leaving the rest implied by darkness.

Finish with the tiniest fleck of white only at the match’s very tip.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• burnt sienna for skin tones
• fine brush for the match
• dark background oils

Palette: Match Flame,Skin Warm Tone,Deep Black,Wick Grey

Hold a lit match near your own hand briefly in a dark room to see how little light actually travels from such a small flame, then paint that falloff even tighter than it looks.

Switch the mood here from deep burgundy to something softer with pastel twisted candles standing on a pale pink table. Block the pink surface first in a warm blush tone, then place each twisted candle, varying their colors between soft pink, mint and cream so the row has gentle variety.

Painting the twist itself just needs a few curved strokes of slightly darker and lighter tone spiraling up each candle, rather than trying to paint every groove literally. Keeping the whole palette too sweet and candy-bright is the trap, so pull everything down slightly with a touch of grey or umber mixed in, which keeps it elegant rather than cartoonish even in pastel.

This scene reads well from a slightly high angle looking down the table, letting you show several candle tops and their small flames at once. For a faster version, three candles grouped close together finish quickly; spreading five or six across a wider table is the fuller, more detailed route.

Finish with warm flame light picked up faintly on the pink tablecloth beneath each candle.

You Will Need

• medium canvas
• soft pink and mint oils
• cream for candle base tone
• grey for muting pastels

Palette: Blush Pink,Soft Mint,Candle Cream,Muted Grey

Mix a touch of burnt umber into each pastel before using it on the candles, since straight-from-tube pastels tend to look flat under warm candlelight without that grounding.

Keep this one small and quiet: a single candle beside a cup of tea resting on a windowsill at night. Paint the dark window first, adding a faint suggestion of frost or falling snow outside, then place the sill itself before the candle and cup go on top.

Get the proportions right by comparing the cup’s height against the candle before committing to either, since a cup painted too tall will compete with the flame instead of sitting quietly beside it. Let the steam rising from the tea pick up a touch of warm light near its base, fading to nothing as it rises into the cooler air above.

This whole scene can finish in ten minutes if you keep it to just the candle, cup and sill; adding the frosted window detail and a faint curtain edge is the fuller version worth the extra twenty minutes. No teacup on hand to study just means any small mug photographed in soft light works for the proportions.

Finish with one warm reflection of the flame caught in the tea’s surface.

You Will Need

• small canvas or panel
• cream and brown for the cup
• amber for candle glow
• fine brush for steam and reflection

Palette: Tea Brown,Candle Amber,Frost Blue,Cream Cup

Add the faintest warm reflection inside the empty part of the teacup, since that single small detail makes the cup feel lit by the candle rather than just placed beside it.

Move from one small flame to many with a church candle procession, where a line of people each carry a single lit candle through a dark space. Keep the figures simple and dark, almost silhouettes, since the real subject is the chain of small glowing points moving through the scene rather than any one face.

Place the candles first as a loose curving line receding into the distance, then build each figure around their own flame, making the nearest candles brightest and most detailed and the furthest just soft dots of warm light. Painting every figure with equal clarity flattens the sense of depth, so commit to blurring the back of the procession more than feels comfortable at first.

A high stone archway or a few suggested pillars in cool grey behind the procession gives the scene scale without demanding real architectural detail. If a full procession feels like too much, three or four figures still reads clearly as the idea.

Finish with a faint warm glow rising off the whole line, as if the candles are lighting each other.

You Will Need

• medium to large canvas
• black and umber for figures
• amber for candle flames
• cool grey for architecture

Palette: Procession Black,Candle Amber,Stone Grey,Warm Glow

Try the acrylic painting approach of blocking large shapes first if oil drying time feels slow for a scene this size, referenced in 15 Easy Acrylic Painting Ideas for Beginners.

Double the glow in this one by painting a group of candles standing in front of a mirror, so every flame appears twice. Paint the real candles first, fully finished, before touching the mirror at all, since you need a clear original to soften into a reflection.

The reflected candles should sit slightly cooler and less defined than the real ones, a touch blurrier and a shade dimmer, which is the detail that makes a mirror read as glass rather than as more candles simply standing behind the first row. Keep the mirror’s frame simple, just enough dark edge to suggest it is a frame and not empty space.

Working with the mirror roughly centered and the candles arranged in front of it gives you a natural symmetry without needing to measure anything precisely, since the slight imperfection of hand-painted symmetry reads as charming rather than wrong. If mirrors feel tricky, a dark polished table surface gives a similar soft reflection with a far simpler shape to paint.

Finish with a faint cool blue tint across the whole reflected half to separate it from the real flames.

You Will Need

• medium canvas
• amber for real candles
• cool blue grey for reflections
• fine brush for mirror edge

Palette: Flame Amber,Reflection Grey Blue,Mirror Frame Gold,Deep Shadow

Soften the reflected flames with a dry brush pass after they are dry enough to touch, which blurs them just enough to separate real light from reflected light at a glance.

Head back outdoors for this one, with a small lantern candle resting on an old wooden sled left in the snow. Block the snow and dark evening sky first, then paint the sled’s wooden slats in warm browns before the lantern itself goes on top glowing softly.

Get the sled’s proportions right by comparing its length against the lantern’s height before adding any curved runners, since a sled drawn too short will look more like a toy box than a sled. Let snow sit along the sled’s edges in thick, textured dabs of white, using the brush almost dry so it catches the canvas unevenly like real settled snow.

A low eye level, close to the ground, makes the lantern’s small glow feel like the only warmth in a big cold scene. For a quicker version, skip the runners and paint just the flat sled bed with the lantern on top; the fuller version adds the curved metal runners catching a cold highlight.

Finish with a warm halo of light melting a small patch of snow right beneath the lantern.

You Will Need

• medium canvas
• brown oils for wood
• white for snow texture
• amber for lantern glow

Palette: Sled Brown,Lantern Amber,Snow White,Night Blue

Bring the glow indoors to a piano lit only by a candle standing on its lid, sheet music open beside it. Paint the piano’s dark polished body first with broad confident strokes, leaving its surface loose enough to suggest a reflective sheen rather than painting every grain of wood.

The sheet music gives you a small bright shape to play with: keep its lines only suggested, a few pale marks rather than legible notes, since real notation will pull far too much attention for how little it adds. The piano’s polished lid is the trickiest surface here, so reflect the candle flame faintly onto it with a single soft smudge of warm light rather than a crisp mirror image.

Working at a slightly elevated angle, as if standing just behind the pianist’s seat, lets you show both the keys and the lid glowing together. If a full piano feels like too much, cropping to just the candle, music and a corner of keys still tells the whole story.

Finish with one warm streak of light running along the piano’s polished edge.

You Will Need

• medium canvas
• dark oils for piano body
• cream for sheet music
• fine brush for reflections

Palette: Piano Black,Candle Amber,Sheet Cream,Warm Reflection

Try cropping tightly to just the candle and the nearest keys for a more intimate version, which also finishes considerably faster than the full instrument.

Paint two traditions sharing one quiet windowsill: a lit menorah beside a single Christmas taper candle, both glowing in the same warm family of light. Block the window and sill first in cool tones, then place the menorah’s branches before adding any flame, keeping its shape simple and evenly spaced.

Compare the menorah’s height against the single taper before finishing either, since the two should feel like companions of similar scale rather than one dwarfing the other. Let each small flame along the menorah vary slightly in size and brightness, the way real candles never burn perfectly evenly, while the single taper beside it burns steady and tall.

Working close to the sill, almost eye level with the candles themselves, keeps the focus intimate and warm rather than distant. If multiple small flames feel fiddly, light only three of the menorah’s branches rather than the full set, which still reads clearly.

Finish with a soft shared pool of golden light spreading across the sill beneath both.

You Will Need

• small to medium canvas
• gold and amber oils for brass and flame
• cool blue for the window
• fine brush for small flames

Palette: Brass Gold,Flame Amber,Window Blue,Sill Cream

Keep both sets of candles burning at a similar brightness rather than favoring one, so the painting reads as two traditions sharing light equally.

Water adds a new challenge here, with several small floating candles glowing inside a wide glass bowl. Paint the bowl’s glass first as mostly the darkness behind and beneath it, since glass is best shown through what it distorts rather than painted directly.

Place each small floating candle with a little space between them, letting their flames cast soft overlapping circles of warm light onto the water’s surface. The water itself is the trickiest part: a dry brush dragged very lightly in short horizontal strokes across the glow suggests gentle ripples far better than trying to paint the water as flat and still.

A high eye level looking down slightly into the bowl shows off the floating arrangement clearly, letting every small flame read as its own point of light. If a full bowl feels fiddly, three floating candles instead of six or seven finishes just as well and keeps the water detail manageable.

Finish with a faint cool blue edge around the bowl’s rim where the glass catches the surrounding dark.

You Will Need

• medium canvas
• amber for flames
• white and grey for water ripples
• fine brush for bowl edge

Palette: Water Grey,Flame Amber,Glass Blue Edge,Candle Cream

Drag the dry brush in the same direction across all the ripple highlights, since mixed directions make water look chaotic rather than gently disturbed by the floating candles.

Bring in a still life now, pairing a single candle with a small pile of clementines studded with cloves. Block the dark background first, then paint the clementines as simple rounded shapes in warm orange before adding any clove detail, since their basic shape matters more than the studded pattern at this stage.

Keep the cloves as tiny dark dots added last with the very tip of a fine brush, scattered rather than evenly spaced, since real clove patterns are never perfectly neat. The candle beside them should cast warm light unevenly across the fruit, brightest on the clementine nearest the flame and fading as it moves away.

This scene works equally well as a quick ten minute study with just one clementine and the candle, or a fuller forty minute version with three or four fruits layered and a sprig of greenery tucked beside them. If clementines are hard to find for reference, any small orange works for the color and roundness.

Finish with one bright highlight on the clementine closest to the flame.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• orange and burnt sienna for fruit
• dark brown for cloves
• fine brush

Palette: Clementine Orange,Clove Brown,Candle Amber,Deep Background

Scatter the cloves in small irregular clusters rather than straight lines, since clustered dots read as a real studded pattern far more convincingly than a neat grid.

Focus on an object here rather than a face or a scene: a gold candle snuffer resting beside a single burning candle, waiting its turn. Paint the candle first, fully glowing, since the snuffer’s whole job in the composition is to sit quietly beside that light and catch a little of it on its polished surface.

The snuffer’s bell shape and handle need only a few confident strokes to read correctly, built from dark to light the same way the candlestick ideas work, saving the brightest highlight for last on its curved edge. Painting the snuffer too detailed is the common error, since a loose, suggested metal shape with one sharp highlight reads as polished brass more convincingly than careful outlining.

Working close in, with the snuffer and candle filling most of the frame, turns a small domestic object into the real subject of the piece. If gold paint runs short, a mix of yellow ochre and a touch of white stands in well for that warm metal tone.

Finish with a single warm highlight running the length of the snuffer’s handle.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• gold ochre for the snuffer
• amber for candle flame
• fine brush for highlight

Palette: Snuffer Gold,Candle Amber,Deep Shadow,Cream Highlight

Place the snuffer at a slight angle rather than lying flat, since a tilted object catches more varied light along its curves and looks less stiff in the final painting.

Step outside again for a wider scene: a small shop window filled with candles, glowing out into a dark snowy street. Block the dark street and building first, then cut in the window shape as a bright warm rectangle before placing any individual candles inside it.

Arrange several candle shapes within the window at different heights, keeping most of them as simple soft blobs of warm light with only one or two painted in sharper detail near the glass. Treating every candle inside equally in detail flattens the window, so let the ones nearest the glass stay crisp and the ones further back blur into a warm haze.

A slightly low eye level looking up at the shopfront makes the window glow feel inviting, as if the viewer is approaching from the cold street. If a full shopfront feels ambitious, cropping to just the window itself, with a sliver of dark street at the bottom, finishes the same mood with less canvas to fill.

Finish with a few flecks of falling snow catching warm light as they pass in front of the glass.

You Will Need

• medium canvas
• warm amber for window light
• dark cool tones for street
• small brush for falling snow

Palette: Window Glow,Street Dark,Building Grey,Snow Fleck White

Keep the street outside almost featureless and dark, since a plain cold street makes the glowing window feel far warmer by contrast than a busy detailed one would.

Return indoors to one of the most classic candlelit spots: a mantel lined with candles and a trailing garland of pine. Block the fireplace and mantel shelf first in warm dark wood tones, then lay the garland loosely across it with a dry brush before placing any candles on top.

Space the candles unevenly along the mantel rather than in a perfect row, grouping two close together here and leaving a gap there, which reads as naturally arranged rather than staged. The dry brush trick that handles the garland fastest: load minimal dark green paint and drag sideways in short strokes, letting flecks of the wood tone show through for texture rather than painting a solid green rope.

A few ornaments or a stocking hung nearby add warmth without needing real detail, just loose shapes of red and gold. If a full mantel feels like a lot of canvas, three candles and a short length of garland still carries the whole mood.

Finish with warm light pooling softly across the mantel shelf beneath the candles.

You Will Need

• medium canvas
• dark wood brown for mantel
• dry brush for garland
• amber for candle glow

Palette: Mantel Wood,Garland Green,Candle Amber,Ornament Red

Bring back a human figure, this time a young woman carrying a single candle through a dark room, her white dress catching the warm glow against the surrounding shadow. Block her silhouette first in a soft off-white, keeping the pose simple and walking, one hand cupped protectively around the flame.

Compare the candle’s position against her face before finishing either, since the flame should sit low enough to light her chin and cheek from below without ever competing with her eyes for brightest point. Her dress is the real showcase for candlelight here: keep most of the fabric in soft shadow blue grey, and let only the side nearest the flame catch a warm golden wash, which does more to suggest fabric folds than painting every crease.

Working at her eye level rather than above or below keeps the moment intimate, as if walking beside her through the dark room. If a full figure feels like too much, cropping to just her shoulders, hand and the candle still tells the story clearly.

Finish with the warmest light landing on her cupped hand, brighter than anywhere else on her.

You Will Need

• medium canvas
• off-white for the dress
• amber for candle glow
• cool blue grey for shadowed fabric

Palette: Dress White,Candle Amber,Shadow Blue Grey,Skin Warm Tone

Study how fabric looks lit from one side only in a dim room, since the warm and cool halves of the same dress should feel like genuinely different temperatures, not just lighter and darker versions of white.

Slow down and study a single candle well into its burn, wax melted and dripping down the side of an old vintage holder. Paint the holder first in its aged metal tones, then build the candle itself from its base up, leaving room along one side for the melted wax to run.

The dripping wax is the detail worth taking slowly: use a fine brush loaded with slightly thinned cream paint and pull short downward strokes, varying their length so some drips run further than others, the way real wax never melts in a perfectly even line. Painting every drip identical in length and speed is the giveaway that it was rushed, so let a few trail further and some barely start.

Working close in on just the candle and holder, filling most of the canvas with this one detail, lets the dripping wax become the real subject rather than a minor touch. If a fine brush is not available, the edge of a palette knife dragged lightly creates a similar uneven drip line.

Finish with the brightest highlight where a single drip catches the flame’s light as it runs.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• cream for wax
• aged metal tones for holder
• fine brush for drips

Palette: Melted Wax Cream,Aged Metal,Flame Amber,Deep Shadow

Let two or three drips overlap slightly near the base, since overlapping wax reads as more time passed than a tidy single line of even drips.

Pair the candle with something quieter still: a small stack of worn books on a side table, lit by one flame beside them. Block the books first as simple rectangular shapes of varied size and slightly different warm browns and muted reds, since a stack of identical books looks painted rather than collected over time.

Compare the stack’s overall height against the candle before finishing either, keeping the candle just taller than the top book so its glow spills down across every spine below it. The spines themselves need only a few short pale marks to suggest old gilt lettering, nothing legible, since actual words will draw far more scrutiny than the loose suggestion.

This scene suits a close, almost tabletop eye level, as if seated right beside the books with the candle just in front. For a faster version, two books instead of four or five still reads clearly as a stack, with less surface to light evenly.

Finish with the warmest light landing on the topmost book’s edge, nearest the flame.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• varied browns and reds for book covers
• amber for candle glow
• fine brush for spine detail

Palette: Book Brown,Muted Red Spine,Candle Amber,Gilt Highlight

Vary each book’s size and angle slightly rather than stacking them perfectly square, since a slight lean in the pile reads as well loved rather than freshly arranged.

Bring warmer, honeyed tones into the mix with a pair of natural beeswax candles standing beside slices of dried orange. Paint the candles first in soft golden tan rather than pure white, since beeswax carries real color of its own that plain cream mixes miss.

The dried orange slices need a layered approach: block each one as a simple warm orange circle first, then add a few darker rings and a paler center membrane once the base color has had a moment to set, which keeps the layers distinct rather than muddy. Mixing the orange and candle colors too close together is the usual trap, so push the orange slices a touch more saturated than the honeyed candle wax beside them.

Arrange the oranges slightly overlapping rather than lined up separately, which gives the still life a natural, gathered feel. If dried orange is hard to reference, a fresh orange slice photographed and left to sit for a day shows a similar color shift toward amber.

Finish with warm candlelight catching translucently through the thinnest edge of one orange slice.

You Will Need

• small to medium canvas
• golden tan for beeswax
• orange and burnt sienna for dried fruit
• fine brush for layered rings

Palette: Beeswax Gold,Dried Orange,Pale Membrane,Deep Shadow

Let a little light pass through the thinnest part of one orange slice by leaving a soft warm glow in its center, since translucency is what separates a painted orange from a flat dried disc.

Return to water with a quieter version of the earlier bathtub idea: just the tub itself, dimly candlelit, in an otherwise fully dark room. Block the entire canvas in near black first, then bring in the tub’s pale edge and the water’s surface only where the candlelight would actually reach it.

Keep most of the room completely unpainted dark, resisting the urge to add visible walls or fixtures, since the absence of detail is what makes this version feel different from the earlier busier bath scene. The water’s surface catches the most light here, so work a soft warm streak across it with a dry brush, blending it gently into the surrounding dark rather than leaving a hard edge.

A single candle placed just at the tub’s edge, rather than several scattered around, keeps this composition calm and minimal. If total darkness feels too stark, a faint hint of a window in the far background adds just enough context without crowding the quiet mood.

Finish with the tub’s pale rim catching the only crisp highlight in the entire painting.

You Will Need

• medium canvas
• black for the room
• titanium white for the tub rim
• amber for the single candle

Palette: Deep Black,Tub White,Candle Amber,Water Shadow

Resist adding any extra light source, since a single candle in true darkness reads as far more peaceful and striking than a softly lit room with a candle added on top.

Bring in a little celebration with a single tall candle set into a frosted Christmas cake, lit as if for a toast rather than a birthday wish. Block the cake’s frosting first in warm white with cool grey shadows in its folds, then place the candle slightly off-center before adding its flame.

Measure the candle’s height against the cake’s width before committing, since a candle too tall will look precarious and one too short will vanish into the frosting. The frosting itself takes light beautifully: use a palette knife or stiff brush to drag thick ridges across the surface, catching warm highlights along their raised edges and leaving the grooves between them in cool shadow.

A few berries or a dusting of something red nearby adds a festive note without needing real detail, just loose dabs of color. If a palette knife is not available, a stiff old brush dragged the same way creates a similar textured frosting surface.

Finish with the warmest light landing on the frosting ridge nearest the candle’s flame.

You Will Need

• small to medium canvas
• white and grey for frosting
• palette knife or stiff brush
• amber for candle flame

Palette: Frosting White,Frosting Shadow Grey,Candle Amber,Berry Red

Drag the frosting texture in slightly curved strokes rather than straight lines, since a gentle curve across the cake’s surface looks more like real piped frosting under warm light.

Take the mood somewhere moodier with black taper candles standing in an ornate gothic candelabra, all deep shadow and small sharp light. Block the candelabra’s dark iron shape first with confident loose strokes, then place the black candles themselves, which read mostly as slightly glossier dark shapes against the matte iron behind them.

Getting black candles to actually read as candles rather than disappearing into the background depends entirely on a few careful highlights: a thin streak of cool blue grey along one side of each candle separates it from the iron, even though both are technically dark. Losing that separation is the main risk here, so keep a scrap of toned paper nearby to test how much highlight is enough before committing to the canvas.

Working at a slightly low angle, looking up into the candelabra’s curling iron arms, gives the whole piece a dramatic, towering feel. If black paint muddies easily in your set, a very dark mix of Payne’s grey and burnt umber often reads as richer black than paint straight from the tube.

Finish with the flame’s warm glow as the single bright note in an otherwise cool, dark piece.

You Will Need

• medium canvas
• black and payne’s grey oils
• dark iron tones for candelabra
• amber for flame

Palette: Candle Black,Iron Dark Grey,Cool Highlight,Flame Amber

Try this same gothic candelabra with deep burgundy candles instead of black next time, which keeps the dramatic iron shape but softens the overall mood considerably.

Step back outside to a small café table set with a candle, snow falling gently around it under string lights or a striped awning. Block the dark evening street first, then the table and chairs in simple warm wood tones, before placing the single candle at its center glowing against the cold.

Compare the table’s size against the chairs around it before adding the candle, since furniture drawn at mismatched scales is the quickest way to undercut an otherwise cozy scene. Let snow fall across the whole canvas in a scattering of small dry dabbed dots, keeping them denser near the top of the painting and sparser near the candle’s warm circle of light, where real snow would partly melt before landing.

Eye level sits close to the table, almost as if seated across from an empty chair, which invites the viewer into the scene. If a full café setting feels like a lot, the table and candle alone, with just a hint of a chair, still carries the whole warm feeling.

Finish with a faint ring of melted, snow-free pavement right around the candle’s base.

You Will Need

• medium canvas
• warm wood tones for table and chairs
• white for snowfall
• amber for candle glow

Give the light a shaped container this time, with a candle glowing inside a star-shaped paper lantern. Draw the star’s outline lightly first, keeping its points even by comparing opposite sides against each other before adding any color, since an uneven star is the fastest way to throw off this whole idea.

Paint the lantern’s paper surface in a warm cream, letting the glow from inside push through unevenly, brighter near the candle’s actual position and softer toward the star’s outer points. This unevenness is the detail that makes it look genuinely lit from within rather than just colored in, so resist the urge to make the glow perfectly uniform across every point.

Hang the lantern against a plain dark background so its warm shape has nothing to compete with. If drawing a perfect star feels fiddly, a simple five-point shape traced from a paper template keeps the proportions even without extra measuring.

Finish with the single brightest spot of light sitting exactly where the candle flame hides behind the paper.

You Will Need

• small canvas
• cream for lantern paper
• amber for internal glow
• star template or ruler for proportions

Palette: Lantern Cream,Inner Glow Amber,Deep Background,Paper Shadow

Trace a paper star template lightly onto the canvas first if freehand stars feel uneven, since a slightly imperfect freehand line still looks fine once the glow is painted over it.

Close the whole series with the biggest scene: a full family table, every face and dish lit only by the candles standing among them. Block the darkest shapes first, the room and the space beyond the table, before placing the candles themselves evenly along its length to establish where all the light in the painting will come from.

Build each figure around their own candle rather than lighting them evenly, so the person nearest a flame glows warmly while someone further off sits mostly in soft shadow, which is exactly how a real candlelit table actually looks. The common mistake is lighting every face with the same careful detail, so let the furthest figures stay loose, almost suggested, while the nearest one or two carry the real finished detail.

A little steam rising from a dish, or the suggestion of plates and glasses in loose warm strokes, fills the table without needing to paint each item fully. If a whole family feels ambitious, three figures gathered close together still carries the same warm, lived-in feeling.

Finish with the warmest light of the entire painting landing on the hands and faces nearest the central candle.

You Will Need

• large canvas
• varied skin and warm tones for figures
• amber for candle glow
• soft brush for background blur

Palette: Candle Amber,Deep Shadow,Warm Skin Tones,Table Cream

Finish by squinting at the whole canvas from across the room, since a candlelit scene this size should still read clearly as light and dark shapes even with all detail blurred away.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever candlelit moment pulled at you first, a single taper in a brass holder is the gentlest place to start, and set up a small toned canvas before you do anything else. Keep your darks dark, save the brightest glow for last, and let one finished painting lead you straight into the next.

Frequently Asked Questions

What oil colors do I actually need for candlelit Christmas scenes?

A small warm palette covers almost everything: titanium white, gold ochre, burnt sienna, burnt umber, a deep red like alizarin, and Payne’s grey for cool shadows. Most of these thirty two ideas mix entirely from that handful, with small additions like pine green or a soft pink for specific scenes.

How do I stop my candle flame from looking flat or cartoonish?

Build it last, in two small strokes, not one big blob of yellow. Paint a warm orange base shape first, then add a single fleck of pale cream or white only at its hottest point, and let the glow around it fade softly into the dark rather than stopping sharply.

Should I paint the background or the candle first?

Always the dark background first, before any flame or glow goes in. Candlelight only reads as bright because of the true dark surrounding it, so establishing that darkness early gives every later warm stroke something real to glow against.

Can I paint these candlelit scenes in acrylic instead of oil?

Yes, acrylic works fine for this same dark-to-light approach, it just dries faster so blending soft edges takes a little more speed or a retarder medium. The same toned ground, warm palette and late flame highlight all carry over directly.

How do I keep so many different candle scenes from looking repetitive?

Vary the light source’s size, color and surroundings rather than just the subject beside it. A tight match flame, a wide window glow and a cluster of floating candles all demand different brush handling, which keeps a whole series of candlelit paintings feeling distinct.
