27 Christmas Landscape Painting Ideas in a Painterly Modern Holiday Style

45

Christmas landscape painting is where a whole holiday scene fits on one small canvas: a truck crunching through snow, a church window glowing at dusk, a sleigh cutting across a quiet field. These are the pictures that look like something you would frame and sell as a print, and they come together fast because the loose brushwork does the heavy lifting instead of tight detail.

Below you will find 27 of them, each with its own small piece of life in it (a family picking a tree, skaters on a pond, a dog trotting beside its walker) so nothing on the list feels like a repeat. Scroll through, pick the one that matches the mood you want on your wall this year, and paint it today.

Start with the simplest version of the idea that carries the whole list: a red truck crossing a snowy field with a tree tied in the back. Block in the field and sky first with a large flat brush, warm grey-pink near the horizon fading to cool blue-violet above, then let that dry a little before anything else goes on top.

Build the truck as three or four flat shapes (cab, hood, wheel wells) in cadmium red before you add a single highlight, since painting the shadows and the shine at the same time is what makes beginners fuss over it too long. Keep the tire tracks as two or three curved dry-brush strokes behind the truck rather than a drawn line, and they will read as motion instead of decoration.

If the red looks flat once it is dry, drag a little burnt sienna into the shadow side with a dry brush so the truck has a front and a back instead of looking pasted on. No cadmium red on hand works fine with a mix of alizarin crimson and a touch of orange.

Finish with one tip worth remembering for every truck or vehicle you paint this season: put the single brightest white highlight on the hood last, and nowhere else gets that bright again.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 8
• filbert brush size 4
• palette knife (optional)

Palette: Cadmium Red,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Burnt Sienna

Look at real holiday postcard photos of trucks for the tilt of the tree in the bed, since getting the branches leaning one direction sells the motion more than the truck itself does.

Move from one truck to a whole tree farm, since the rows of trees give you a chance to practice repeating a shape without making it stiff. Lay the sunset sky first in horizontal bands of peach, rose and violet blended wet into wet, then let the rows of trees go in as dark cone silhouettes once that sky layer is dry enough not to muddy.

Vary the height and tilt of each tree cone slightly as you paint the row, since perfectly even trees look like a stencil rather than a real farm. Drop in two or three families as small dark shapes with a dab of a red hat or scarf between the rows, placed smaller toward the back to push distance into the scene.

If the rows start looking flat, cool the far trees toward blue-green and keep the front ones a warmer near-black, which is the whole trick to making distance read in a loose painting. Swap a palette knife for the front tree edges if you want a rougher, more textured feel than a brush gives.

Keep one measuring habit for this one: the farthest row of trees should be no taller than half the row nearest you, or the whole field tips forward oddly.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 10
• round brush size 2 for figures
• rag for blending sky

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Quinacridone Rose,Sap Green,Payne’s Grey

Add a thin string of warm string-lights along one row with tiny dot strokes of pale yellow, which turns a plain tree farm into the kind of scene people pin for the whole season.

Bring the scene in close with a farmhouse front, its door hung with a wreath bigger than anything you would actually nail up, since oversized is part of the modern-print charm. Block the house as one flat wall shape first, roof and porch as simple geometric additions, and resist adding windows until the wall colour is fully dry.

Paint every window as a warm yellow-orange square before you touch the snow around the house, then come back with a single thin line of darker frame colour so the glow stays soft rather than caged in. The wreath goes on last as a loose ring of dark green dabs with three or four red berry dots, painted quickly so it keeps its roundness instead of becoming a tight circle.

If the house looks too flat against the snow, drag a cool blue-grey shadow along its base where it meets the ground, which is the single fastest way to seat any building into snow. No cadmium yellow on hand, a mix of yellow ochre and white gives the same cozy glow.

One tip for today: paint the wreath’s shadow on the door first, then the wreath, so the greenery sits in front of something instead of floating.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 8
• small round brush for windows
• painter’s tape for door edges (optional)

Palette: Yellow Ochre,Sap Green,Alizarin Crimson,Titanium White

Try warming the snow right under each lit window with a touch of yellow mixed into the white, since light spilling onto snow is a small detail that reads as expensive and considered.

Keep the warm glow going but move it outdoors with a horse-drawn sleigh crossing an open meadow as the light fades. Paint the meadow and sky together first in broad cool strokes, violet-blue deepening toward the top, then drop in a low warm band near the horizon where the last daylight sits.

Build the horse as one dark, slightly curved silhouette before the sleigh, since getting the arch of the neck and the angle of the legs right matters more than any detail on the sleigh itself. Keep the sleigh and any passengers as simple dark shapes too, with maybe one red blanket or scarf as the only bright note on the whole animal and cart.

Eye level matters here: keep your horizon low, around a third up the canvas, so the sleigh and horse are seen slightly from below and feel more monumental against that big dusk sky. If the horse’s legs look stiff, soften the lowest edge where hoof meets snow with a dry brush instead of a hard line.

One tip to carry into the next idea too: let the warmest colour in the sky touch the snow in one or two reflected streaks, since that link between sky and ground is what gives dusk scenes their glow.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 10
• round brush size 4
• soft rag for horizon blending

Palette: Ultramarine Blue,Cadmium Orange,Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Red

Study a photo of a horse in profile before you paint, since the angle of the front legs mid-stride is the one shape that makes a sleigh scene feel alive instead of parked.

Climb a little higher now with a church on a hill, its steeple catching the last light as small figures arrive for an evening service. Paint the hill and sky as one continuous cool mass first, then let the church sit as a pale warm shape near the top, since putting the building up high is what gives this one its quiet, lifted feeling.

Work the steeple last and thin, one or two confident vertical strokes rather than a fussy outline, and let one window glow gold just under the roofline. Dot in the arriving figures along a diagonal path up the hill, each one just a short dark stroke with maybe a red scarf dab, smaller as they get farther from the viewer.

If the church looks like it is floating, anchor it with a shadow cast downhill in the same cool grey as your sky, angled away from whichever side the light comes from. Swap the steeple for a simple gabled roofline if a pointed spire feels too fiddly for one sitting.

One concrete tip: paint the path itself as a slightly warmer streak of snow than the snow around it, since footsteps compact snow and catch light differently.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 8
• liner brush for steeple
• round brush size 2 for figures

Palette: Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Yellow Ochre,Alizarin Crimson

Keep the sky behind the steeple a touch darker than the rest, a trick borrowed from sunset painting that makes a pale building glow without adding any extra white paint.

Trade the churchyard for rolling vineyard rows dusted in snow, with one small cabin glowing at the far end. Lay the rolling hills first with long curved strokes so the land itself has movement, then paint the vine rows as repeated short diagonal dashes following the slope rather than straight ruled lines.

Keep the cabin tiny in the distance, three or four strokes at most, since its scale against the rows is what makes the vineyard feel vast. One warm yellow window dab is the whole light source for the painting, so place it exactly where you want the eye to land before anything else competes with it.

If the rows start to look like stripes instead of a hillside, vary the spacing and curve of each dash and let a few disappear into snow drifts, since real vine rows are never perfectly tidy under snow. No fine liner brush, the edge of a flat brush turned sideways makes the same thin dash.

One tip for today: paint the smoke from the cabin chimney as a single soft grey diagonal stroke, angled with whatever direction you gave the snow shadows, so the whole scene agrees on its wind.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 8 turned sideways for dashes
• small round brush
• rag for hill blending

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Yellow Ochre,Sap Green

Try adding a faint pink cast to the snow on the sunlit side of each hill, since pure white snow next to pure white sky flattens the whole middle ground.

Bring the view back down to eye level for a covered bridge wrapped in garland over a half-frozen stream. Paint the stream and snowbanks first, letting a few patches of dark water show through broken ice with a dry, dragged brush rather than a smooth fill.

Block the bridge as one simple dark tunnel shape before you add the garland, since the garland reads far better as a loose green line wrapped over an already-finished structure than painted at the same time as the wood. Dot red berries or tiny bows along the garland with the very tip of a round brush, spaced unevenly so it looks hand-strung.

If the bridge interior looks like a flat black hole, warm the very back of the tunnel with a touch of ochre to suggest light coming through the far side. Swap real garland detail for a simple string of warm dots if the wrapped-green effect feels too fussy today.

One tip to keep: paint the water’s reflection of the bridge as a soft vertical smudge straight down from it, since even a rough reflection convinces the eye the ice is real.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 8
• round brush size 1 for berries
• dry flat brush for broken ice

Palette: Burnt Umber,Sap Green,Cadmium Red,Payne’s Grey

Look at reference photos of real covered bridges for how deep the shadow under the roof falls, since that dark band is what gives the structure its tunnel feel.

Fill a frozen lake with motion now: skaters gliding across the ice while a bonfire throws orange light along one bank. Paint the ice first as a cool pale grey-blue plane, leaving it mostly flat and smooth so it reads as frozen rather than textured like snow.

Place the bonfire glow next, a soft warm smudge of orange and yellow blended straight into the ice beside it, before adding a single dark vertical plume of smoke above it. Only once that glow is down should the skaters go in, each one just two or three short strokes (a dark coat shape, a leg line, maybe a red scarf) angled slightly to suggest gliding rather than standing.

If the ice looks too flat and empty, scratch a few thin curved lines into the wet paint with the brush handle to suggest skate marks catching the light. No palette knife for scratching, the wrong end of a paintbrush works the same way.

One tip for today: keep every skater’s stroke leaning the same direction, since matching angles across several tiny figures is what sells a whole crowd moving together.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 10
• round brush size 2 for skaters
• brush handle for scratching ice lines

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Orange,Titanium White,Cadmium Red

Add one or two figures sitting near the fire rather than skating, which breaks the rhythm of the moving figures and gives the eye somewhere to rest.

Settle the energy down with a straight snowy road receding into the distance, lined on both sides with lampposts glowing against early evening blue. Paint the road and surrounding snow as one long converging shape first, keeping the perspective lines leading to a single point near the horizon.

Place the lampposts next, each one a thin dark vertical with a small warm globe of light at the top, spaced closer together and smaller as they march toward that vanishing point. This is the whole trick of the painting: get the spacing and size of the posts shrinking consistently and the road reads as deep rather than flat no matter how loose the brushwork stays elsewhere.

If the lamps look like they are floating, give each one a tiny pool of warm light reflected onto the snow directly beneath it before the glow itself goes on top. Swap evenly spaced posts for a gentle curve in the road if a dead-straight line feels too stiff.

One tip to keep for today: paint the farthest two or three lampposts as nothing more than single dots of warm colour, since detail at a distance is exactly what a camera lens drops too.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 8
• liner brush for posts
• round brush size 1 for light globes

Palette: Ultramarine Blue,Titanium White,Yellow Ochre,Payne’s Grey

Check the easy landscape painting basics for more on getting a road or path to converge believably before you commit to the lamppost spacing.

Widen the view into a whole Alpine village gathered around one enormous tree lit up in the square. Paint the mountain backdrop first in soft cool layers, then let the rooftops of the village come forward as a cluster of simple triangle and rectangle shapes, varying their height so the skyline has rhythm.

Save the big tree for its own pass: one tall loose cone shape in deep green, dotted with small bright marks for lights before the paint dries, since lights dabbed onto wet green will soften just enough to glow rather than sit as hard dots. Tiny figures gathered at its base, just short dark strokes, give the tree its scale.

If the mountains behind feel too sharp and close, cool them further toward blue-violet and soften their edges with a dry brush, pushing them back where they belong. No dedicated mountain reference on hand, any photo of a snowy range works for the silhouette alone.

One tip for today: let the tree’s lit side face the brightest building nearby, so the two light sources feel like they belong to the same evening.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 10
• round brush size 1 for tree lights
• fan brush for mountain texture (optional)

Palette: Sap Green,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Cadmium Yellow

Try a palette knife for the rooftop edges instead of a brush, which gives the little Alpine houses a crisp, iced look that contrasts nicely against the soft mountains.

Head for the coast with a lighthouse standing against a cold winter sky, a wreath hung at its lantern room. Paint the sky and sea together first, keeping the horizon line low so the lighthouse has plenty of room to stand tall against the clouds above it.

Build the tower as one long vertical shape, lightest where the light would naturally catch it on one side and cooler grey on the other, before adding the horizontal bands of colour real lighthouses often carry. The wreath at the top is a small, quick ring of green with two or three red dots, kept loose so it reads as decoration rather than a painted detail competing with the lantern room’s glow.

If the tower looks too stiff and straight, soften its base where it meets the rocks with a few broken, textured strokes instead of a hard line. Swap crashing waves for calm water if rough seas feel like too much for one sitting, since a calm shoreline still carries the mood just fine.

One tip to carry forward: paint the lantern room’s glow spilling slightly onto the sky beside it, the same trick used for cabin and farmhouse windows earlier on this list.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 10
• round brush size 2 for wreath
• palette knife for rocks (optional)

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Cadmium Red,Sap Green

Look at winter coastline photography for how flat and pale the light gets near the horizon, since that pale band is what makes a cold sky read as cold.

Return to the ground with a quieter scene: a snow-covered orchard, bare branches strung with small lanterns and one ladder leaning against a trunk. Paint the orchard floor and sky first in soft cool tones, then build each tree as a simple dark trunk with a few spreading branch lines rather than a full leafy canopy, since bare winter branches are forgiving and quick.

Hang the lanterns along two or three branches as small warm dots once the branch lines are dry, spacing them unevenly so they look strung by hand rather than printed. The ladder goes in last as two parallel diagonal lines with short rungs, leaned at a slight angle against the nearest trunk for a human touch.

If the branches look too neat and symmetrical, break a few lines partway and let them trail off into nothing, the way real winter branches do at their thinnest tips. No fine liner brush for the branches, the edge of a small flat brush dragged lightly gives the same broken line.

One tip for today: keep the lantern light warmer and smaller than any other glow on this list, since a string of tiny lanterns should whisper rather than flood the scene.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 6
• liner or small round brush for branches
• round brush size 1 for lanterns

Palette: Burnt Umber,Payne’s Grey,Yellow Ochre,Titanium White

Add one dark bird silhouette on a branch if the orchard feels too still, a single small shape that gives the eye somewhere unexpected to land.

Climb into the mountains for a small cabin tucked against deep snow, a pair of skis leaning by the door and smoke curling from the chimney. Block the mountain backdrop and snowfield first in cool blues and violets, then let the cabin sit low and solid near the bottom third of the canvas so the mountains tower properly above it.

Paint the cabin’s log walls as a few horizontal strokes of warm brown before the roof and windows go on, and add the skis as two simple parallel lines leaned at a slight angle against the porch, quick enough that they read without needing real ski shapes. The chimney smoke is one soft grey-white curved stroke, thinned at the top where it disperses into the sky.

If the cabin disappears against the mountains behind it, darken the mountain mass just behind the roofline so the warm wood pops forward by contrast. Swap skis for a simple sled if that shape feels easier to paint quickly.

One tip to keep: let the one lit window be the warmest, boldest colour anywhere in the whole painting, since everything else here should stay cool enough to make that single window feel like shelter.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 8
• round brush size 2 for skis and smoke
• palette knife for snow texture

Palette: Ultramarine Blue,Burnt Sienna,Titanium White,Cadmium Orange

Try laying the snow on the mountain slopes with a palette knife instead of a brush, since the ridges it leaves catch light the way real packed snow does.

Come back down to a single red barn, a simple star fixed to its roofline catching the last of the daylight. Paint the barn as one flat red shape first, roof a slightly darker tone, and let that dry before you touch the star so the red has time to settle without smearing.

Measure the star’s size against the barn roof before you commit to it: it should sit roughly a third the width of the roof peak, since anything bigger starts to look like a cartoon and anything smaller disappears entirely. Paint it as five or six quick confident strokes radiating from a center point rather than a carefully ruled shape, which keeps it feeling hand-painted.

If the barn looks too flat against the field, drag a cool shadow along its base and one side wall where the light would naturally miss it. No cadmium red on hand, a mix of alizarin crimson and a touch of burnt orange gets close enough.

One tip for today: paint snow caught on the barn roof’s edge as a single ragged white line rather than a smooth cap, since real snow drifts unevenly along any roofline.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 8
• round brush size 2 for star
• ruler for star spacing (optional, for measuring only)

Palette: Cadmium Red,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Yellow Ochre

Give the star a faint yellow glow by softening its edges into the sky with a dry brush, so it looks lit rather than simply attached to the roof.

Trade the barn for a row of seaside houses strung with lights along a quiet winter shore. Paint the sea and sky as one soft cool backdrop first, then build the row of houses as a line of simple rectangular shapes along the shore, varying their height and colour so the row has rhythm instead of repeating a single house.

String lights between two or three of the rooftops as a thin wavy line of small warm dots, added once the houses themselves are dry so the dots sit crisp on top rather than blending into wet paint. A few boats pulled up on the sand, just two or three dark curved strokes each, give the shoreline something to anchor on.

If the row of houses looks too uniform, let one stand slightly taller or a different warm colour than the rest, since real seaside towns are rarely built to match. Swap strung lights for simply lit windows if the dotted line feels fussy today.

One tip to keep: reflect the warmest house colour faintly in the wet sand just in front of it, a small touch that ties the whole row to the shoreline.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 8
• round brush size 1 for lights and boats
• rag for sea blending

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Orange,Titanium White,Cadmium Red

Look at the ocean oil painting ideas for how to keep a winter shoreline loose, since the same soft wet-sand reflections apply here.

Bring in something with more colour now: a carousel standing still in a snow-covered park, its canopy striped and strung with light. Paint the park setting first in muted cool tones, bare trees and benches as simple dark shapes, so the carousel itself becomes the one bright, busy thing in an otherwise quiet scene.

Work the carousel canopy as alternating stripes of two or three colours painted while the first colour is still slightly wet, letting them blend just a touch at the edges for a soft candy effect rather than a hard graphic one. Suggest the horses underneath with only a few pale curved strokes, since full detail here would fight with the canopy for attention.

If the carousel looks flat against the snow, give it a cast shadow pooling slightly toward the viewer and warm its underside where interior lights would naturally glow upward. No striped reference handy, alternating red and cream with one thin gold line between stripes reads as a carousel instantly.

One tip for today: keep every other element in the park quieter and cooler than the carousel, since a loud subject needs a calm setting to actually stand out.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 8
• round brush size 2 for canopy stripes
• liner brush for gold trim

Palette: Cadmium Red,Titanium White,Cadmium Yellow,Payne’s Grey

Add one small figure standing near the carousel rather than riding it, since a still carousel with someone simply watching feels more wistful than a crowded one.

Widen out again for a train crossing a long snowy valley, its windows glowing in a row as it moves between two slopes. Paint the valley and sky first as broad cool shapes, then build the train as one long, slightly curved dark band following the valley floor rather than a straight ruled line, since trains and tracks bend with the land.

Dot the windows along that dark band in a steady warm yellow rhythm before anything else, since getting that spacing even is what makes the shape read instantly as a train rather than a smudge. A single plume of steam or smoke trailing behind the last car, one soft grey-white stroke thinned at the end, finishes the motion.

If the train looks too flat against the valley, add a thin strip of reflected light along its top edge where the low sun or dusk sky would catch the metal. Swap a modern train for an old steam engine shape if a rounder front feels more in keeping with the rest of the scene.

One tip to keep: curve the train very slightly rather than keeping it dead straight, since even a gentle bend makes the whole valley feel like it has real depth to travel through.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 10
• liner brush for train band
• round brush size 1 for windows

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Yellow,Titanium White,Ultramarine Blue

Keep the valley slopes simple and let the train’s warm windows be the only true yellow in the painting, which makes them impossible to miss from across a room.

Settle back into something quieter with a small red cabin sitting beside a frozen river, its colour the only warmth against all that cold water and snow. Paint the river first as a long pale plane with a few darker streaks where the ice is thinner, then let the snowbanks and bare trees build up around it before the cabin goes in.

Block the cabin as one confident red rectangle with a simple triangle roof, keeping the shape plain so the colour itself carries the whole subject. Add one window glowing softly and a short dark chimney, then let a thin line of smoke drift sideways to suggest wind off the water.

If the red looks too harsh against the white, grey the roof slightly cooler than the walls so the whole cabin does not read as one flat block of colour. No cadmium red on hand, a mix of alizarin crimson with a touch of burnt sienna warms it down nicely.

One tip for today: paint the cabin’s reflection as a soft vertical smear of red in the ice near the open water, faint enough to suggest rather than mirror it exactly.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 8
• round brush size 2 for window and chimney
• rag for river blending

Palette: Cadmium Red,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Burnt Sienna

Try the oil painting landscape ideas for more ways to handle frozen water if the ice streaks feel tricky to get right on the first try.

Return to pure pattern with a whole field of snow-capped Christmas trees stretching into the distance, no buildings or figures at all this time. Paint the sky and snow as one soft backdrop first, then build the trees as a scattered field of cone shapes, each one slightly different in height, tilt and green tone so the field never feels stamped out.

Cap each tree with a thick dab of white or pale blue-white snow using a loaded brush or palette knife, pressed on rather than dragged, so the snow sits as a believable weight on the branches rather than a painted outline. Work from the back of the field forward, letting the nearer trees get darker and more detailed than the hazy ones further back.

If the field looks too busy, leave a few open gaps of plain snow between clusters of trees, since real fields breathe with space rather than filling edge to edge. Swap a palette knife for a stiff dry brush if loading thick paint feels unfamiliar.

One tip to keep for next time: try painting the same field in early morning light instead of dusk once this version works, since the cooler, flatter light changes almost every colour choice here.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 10
• palette knife for snow caps
• round brush size 4 for tree bodies

Palette: Sap Green,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Ultramarine Blue

Look at the Christmas painting ideas list for more small-canvas ways to handle a repeated tree pattern if you want to try this one again at a different size.

Bring people back into the picture with a city park where a few figures carry freshly cut trees over their shoulders toward home. Paint the park’s bare trees, paths and snow first in cool muted tones, keeping the whole background simple so the carried trees and their carriers stand out clearly against it.

Build each figure as a single leaning dark stroke with the tree as a second darker shape angled over one shoulder, since the lean of both figure and tree together is what makes the weight of carrying something heavy actually read. Space two or three of these figures along a path at different distances, smaller and fainter the farther back they go.

If the figures look stiff standing upright, exaggerate the forward lean slightly more than feels natural, since a small exaggeration here reads as effort rather than awkwardness once it is small on canvas. Swap a shoulder-carry for a tree dragged on a sled if the lean feels hard to get right today.

One tip for today: give one figure a bright red hat or scarf and leave the others in muted tones, so the eye has one clear place to land first in a scene with several people.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 8
• round brush size 2 for figures
• liner brush for tree branches

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Sap Green,Cadmium Red,Titanium White

Check the Christmas sketching ideas for quick figure gestures if the leaning pose needs a few practice sketches before it goes onto canvas.

Step off the open park paths and into a dark forest path lit only by a string of hanging lanterns. Paint the forest as a mass of deep, near-black green and brown first, leaving the path itself as a paler cool strip winding through the middle so the eye has somewhere clear to travel.

Hang the lanterns along the path’s edge as a series of small warm glowing dots, spaced to follow the path’s curve and get smaller the farther they recede, which does double duty for both light and perspective. Keep the tree trunks nearest the viewer darkest and most solid, softening and simplifying anything further back into the gloom.

If the forest reads as too flat and solid, scratch or drag a few thin vertical lines through the dark mass to suggest distant trunks without painting each one individually. No fine liner brush, a dry stiff brush dragged lightly does the same broken scratch.

One tip to keep: let the path’s pale colour warm slightly near each lantern and stay cool in between, so the light feels like it genuinely falls in pools rather than evenly across the whole trail.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 8
• round brush size 1 for lanterns
• dry stiff brush for trunk texture

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Burnt Umber,Cadmium Yellow,Titanium White

Place the lanterns slightly off-center along the path rather than in a perfectly even row, since a small irregular scatter feels hand-strung and far less mechanical.

Lean fully into warmth now with a whole village painted in gingerbread browns, creams and reds, lit up at dusk. Paint the sky in a deep dusk blue-violet first so every warm building colour that follows has something cool to push against, then build the row of houses as simple blocky shapes in varied warm tones: caramel, rust, deep cream.

Pick one or two houses to carry the brightest red roofs or doors, since a whole village painted equally bright everywhere loses the single warm focal point this idea depends on. Snow caps along each roofline, painted last with a loaded brush pressed rather than dragged, finish the gingerbread feeling without adding any actual icing detail.

If the village looks too cartoonish, mute one or two of the brightest colours toward a greyer brown, since real warmth needs at least one subdued neighbour to feel believable rather than candy-coated. Swap individual windows for simple warm glow patches if painting each pane feels like too much for one sitting.

One tip for today: keep the dusk sky visibly cooler than every single building colour, since that contrast is the whole engine behind the gingerbread warmth reading as warm.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 8
• palette knife for snow caps
• round brush size 2 for windows and doors

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cadmium Red,Yellow Ochre,Ultramarine Blue

Add warm light spilling from two neighbouring windows onto the snow between the houses, which ties the whole row together as one lived-in street rather than separate buildings.

Move to something more delicate with a small pond, a gazebo strung with fairy lights reflecting on the still water below. Paint the pond first as one smooth pale plane, then build the gazebo as a simple open structure of a few posts and a peaked roof, keeping the gaps between posts clear so light and reflection can pass through them visually.

String the fairy lights as a scatter of tiny warm dots along the roofline and posts, added once the gazebo structure is dry, then immediately drop a softened, slightly longer version of each dot straight down into the pond below it. That paired dot and its blurred reflection is the one trick that makes the whole painting feel lit from within.

If the reflection looks too crisp and mirror-like, drag a dry brush once, lightly, across the water’s surface to break it up the way real still water always has some texture. Swap a full gazebo for a simple arched trellis if the open post structure feels tricky to balance today.

One tip to keep: keep the water itself a shade darker than the sky above it, since still water almost never matches the sky exactly even on the calmest evening.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 8
• round brush size 1 for fairy lights
• liner brush for gazebo posts

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Cadmium Yellow,Ultramarine Blue

Try this one on a square canvas rather than a rectangle, since the symmetry of a gazebo and its reflection often suits an even format better than a wide landscape crop.

Bring the energy back up with a snowy hill full of sledders mid-ride, caught at different points down the slope. Paint the hill as one broad curved shape first, lightest at the top where it catches the sky and cooling into shadow toward the bottom, since that gradient alone gives the slope its sense of steepness.

Place each sledder as just two or three quick strokes (a dark huddled shape and a curved sled line beneath), angled to follow the slope rather than sitting upright, and vary their position so some are near the top and others already near the bottom. Keep a light spray of kicked-up snow behind the fastest sledder, a few flicked dry-brush marks, to suggest speed.

If the hill looks flat despite the gradient, add one or two bare trees along its edge, smaller toward the top, which gives the eye a scale reference for just how tall the slope really is. Swap sleds for inner tubes if a rounder shape feels quicker to paint than a sled’s straight runners.

One tip for today: keep every sledder’s coat a different colour from the others, since a scattered rainbow of small bright coats against white snow is what makes this one feel full of life rather than crowded.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 10
• round brush size 2 for figures
• dry brush for kicked-up snow

Palette: Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Red,Cadmium Yellow

Look at winter sports photography for how a sled’s back end kicks up slightly on a turn, a small detail that makes a static painted shape feel like it is actually moving.

Travel to a narrow fjord village tucked between steep snowy slopes, small fishing boats moored along the water and lights strung above the docks. Paint the fjord walls first as two tall converging cool masses framing the water, then lay the water itself as a dark, nearly still plane between them, since the narrowness of the fjord is what gives this scene its particular drama.

Build the village as a tight cluster of small warm houses along the one flat shoreline strip, keeping them smaller and simpler than the houses in a wide village scene, since the steep walls around them should feel far more dominant than the buildings. A few boats, simple curved dark hulls with a single mast line each, sit moored at odd angles rather than lined up neatly.

If the fjord walls look flat, add a few streaks of exposed dark rock through the snow on their steepest faces, which breaks up what would otherwise be one even white mass. Swap boats for a single small dock if several hulls feel like too much detail for today.

One tip to keep: let the strung lights above the docks be the warmest, smallest marks in the whole painting, since they need to compete with very little else for attention in a scene this dramatic.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 10
• round brush size 2 for boats
• liner brush for rock streaks

Reference real fjord photography for how dark and still the water sits between steep slopes, since that stillness is what makes small boats and lights read as precious rather than crowded.

Quiet the whole list down for one of the simplest scenes here: a country road stretching into the distance with just one walker and a dog making their way along it. Paint the road and fields first as broad soft shapes, keeping the palette narrow and muted so the single figure has nothing to compete with.

Place the walker roughly a third of the way into the painting rather than dead center, with the dog as a smaller, lower shape slightly ahead or just behind, since that small offset keeps the composition from feeling too symmetrical and still. Both figure and dog need only a handful of strokes each: a leaning coat shape, a short tail or leash line, nothing more detailed than that.

If the figure disappears into the road and fields around it, give the coat one small warm note, a red scarf or hat, since that single colour pop is often the only thing separating a quiet painting from an empty one. Swap the dog for a second walker if a solitary figure feels too stark for the mood you want today.

One tip for today: leave visible brushwork in the sky looser and rougher than anywhere else, since this subject earns its quiet mostly through restraint rather than detail.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 8
• round brush size 1 for figure and dog
• rag for soft sky blending

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Cadmium Red,Burnt Umber

Try this composition in a narrow vertical format instead of a wide one, since a tall canvas pulls more attention to the length of the empty road ahead of the walker.

Close the list in a city square with a towering Christmas tree surrounded by tall shuttered buildings and strings of overhead lights. Paint the buildings first as a loose row of tall, narrow shapes framing the square, varying their warm stone and cream tones slightly so the row has rhythm rather than repeating one flat colour.

Build the giant tree last and largest, a tall confident cone shape dabbed with small warm lights once the green itself is dry, positioned to dominate the center of the square the way it would in real life. String a few loose lines of overhead lights between the buildings above the tree, small warm dashes rather than a perfectly straight strand.

If the square feels empty, scatter a few tiny figures at the base of the tree and along the pavement, each just a short dark stroke, smaller the farther they sit from the viewer. Swap ornate shuttered buildings for plainer facades if the architectural detail feels like too much for one sitting.

One tip for today, and for the whole list behind it: keep the single tree the tallest, brightest thing in the entire square, since one dominant light source is what makes every painting on this list read as a finished scene rather than a sketch.

You Will Need

• canvas board
• flat brush size 10
• round brush size 1 for tree lights
• liner brush for overhead light lines

What to Do Next

Pick one scene that matches the mood you want on your wall today, gather a small canvas board and your warm-and-cool palette, and block in the sky and snow before anything else goes on top. The rest of the list will still be waiting once this one is drying.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paint works best for a christmas landscape painting with this loose, painterly look?

Oil paint is the natural choice, since it stays workable long enough to blend skies and snow wet into wet and to drag dry-brush texture over dried layers. Acrylic can substitute if you work fast and keep a spray bottle nearby to slow the drying.

How do you keep snow from looking flat white in a christmas landscape painting?

Add a cool grey, blue or violet shadow colour wherever snow dips, drifts or sits near a building, since pure white alone reads as flat paper rather than snow. Warm it slightly wherever light from a window or fire spills onto it.

What size canvas suits these ideas for a first attempt?

A small canvas board, roughly eight by ten inches or similar, suits nearly every idea here and keeps a whole scene finishable in one sitting. Figures and lights read fine at that size since the style depends on suggestion rather than fine detail.

How do you paint tiny figures without them looking like blobs?

Keep each figure to two or three confident strokes, a leaning dark shape for the body and one shorter stroke for a limb or detail, rather than trying to draw a full person. Add one small colour note, like a red scarf, so the eye accepts the shape as a figure.

Can these christmas landscape painting ideas work in acrylic instead of oil?

Yes, acrylic can produce the same loose, painterly look if you work in layers and keep your brush loaded rather than scrubbing paint thin. Expect faster drying, so block in large areas first and add small warm highlights while the layer beneath is still slightly damp.
