Oil painting for beginners step by step is my favorite way to ease into this medium, because the paint stays workable long enough to nudge a cloud or soften a roofline before it sets. There is something so satisfying about pushing cool blue-grey snow next to a warm little window glow, and winter villages give you exactly that contrast in every single scene.

Below you will find twelve small village moments, each one built in four to six stages from the first loose underpainting to the final snow highlights. Pick the one that calls to you today, keep your brush moving, and let the rest sit for tomorrow.

Before You Start

• Work on a small canvas board or canvas panel for these, something around 8 by 10 inches, so one sitting is enough to finish a scene.
• Keep your underpainting thin and loose, almost like a stain, so the texture of the canvas still shows through before you build up thicker paint.
• Mix your snow colours on the palette before you touch the canvas: white with a touch of blue or grey reads far colder than white straight from the tube.
• Test every warm window colour on a scrap piece of canvas first, since a yellow that looks right in the tube can turn too orange once it sits against blue snow.
• Use a soft flat or filbert brush for blending skies and snow, and save a small round brush only for the fine dark lines like branches and window frames.
• Let each layer get slightly tacky before you paint the next detail on top, so your crisp lines do not drag and smear into the wash beneath.

Church Steeple Above Snowy Roofs

Start this one the way every scene here begins, with a light pencil sketch that just marks where the steeple sits against the roofline, nothing fussy. Then mix a thin grey blue wash for the sky and brush it on loosely, letting some canvas texture peek through so the underpainting stays breathable.

Once that sky layer feels dry to a light touch, block in the snow covered roofs and ground with a soft pale mix of white and grey, blending the edges where snow meets sky. Beginners often make this snow too flat white, so keep a whisper of grey or blue mixed in everywhere except the very brightest ridges.

Add the warm stone colour on the steeple and houses next, keeping it slightly broken so it reads as old plaster rather than flat paint. Finish with dark window frames and roofline shadows, then dab bright white highlights only where snow truly catches light. If you run low on payne’s grey, a mix of ultramarine blue and burnt umber gives a close cool dark. The tip that saves this scene every time: paint the steeple shadow side a touch warmer than the sky, it keeps the stone from looking pasted on.

Horse Sleigh On A Village Lane

Sketch the horse and sleigh small and a little loose, since this scene reads best when the figures stay simple against a quiet lane. Lay your cool grey wash over the sky and far trees first, keeping it thin so it dries quickly and gives you a toned ground to build on.

Brush the pale blue grey snow wash next across the lane, pulling it wider than you think you need so the lane edges stay soft rather than cut out sharply. Let that dry to the touch before you bring in the warm brown for the horse and sleigh, since wet snow colour will drag muddy brown into itself otherwise.

Dark harness lines, sleigh runners and a few bare branches go in with a small round brush once the browns feel firm. Finish with snow highlights along the lane tracks and a soft blue grey shadow stretching from the sleigh, which is what gives it real weight on the ground. If your round brush feels too stiff for these fine lines, a rigger brush is worth picking up. The tip here: keep the horse’s far legs slightly softer in edge than the near ones, it pushes the whole animal forward.

Kids Skating On A Pond

Keep the pencil sketch of the skaters very simple here, just small shapes for coats and legs in motion, since detail comes later in paint not pencil. Wash the sky and tree line thin and grey first, then while that sky is still slightly damp, pull a pale icy blue across the pond so sky and ice blend softly at the horizon.

Once the pond has dried enough that a light touch leaves no mark, paint the skaters in small dabs of colour, a red scarf here, a brown coat there, keeping each figure no bigger than a thumbnail. This is where beginners overwork the faces, so resist adding more than a hint of a nose or chin, distance does the rest.

Add dark skate blades and a few bare tree trunks with your round brush once the figures are dry to the touch. Finish with white highlights scattered across the ice to suggest its shine, and a soft grey shadow under each skater so they feel planted on the surface rather than floating. If cerulean blue is not in your set, ultramarine lightened well with white gives a close cold tone. The tip for this one: vary the skaters’ poses, one bent forward, one arms out, and the whole pond feels alive.

Cottage With Smoke And Lit Windows

This scene lives or dies by the contrast between cold outside and warm inside, so plan for that from the pencil sketch onward, marking exactly where each window sits. Wash the dusky evening sky in first with a thin blue grey mix, since a darker sky makes the window glow read far stronger later.

Once that sky layer is dry enough not to lift, block in the snowy roof and ground with your pale white grey mix, leaving the wall area bare for now. Paint the cottage walls next in warm raw sienna and burnt umber, letting the brushwork stay a little rough for that timber cottage texture.

The window glow is the star here: load your round brush with cadmium yellow softened with a touch of white, and let it sit slightly wet so it blurs gently into the dark wall around it, like real light spilling out. Add a soft grey smoke wisp drifting from the chimney with a dry, barely loaded brush. Finish with crisp snow highlights on the roof edge and a long soft shadow stretching from the cottage base. If cadmium yellow feels too harsh, warm it slightly with a touch of cadmium orange. For more ideas like this one, the winter oil painting ideas for beginners collection is worth a look. The tip: paint the window glow last of all, over dry wall paint, so it stays clean and bright.

Market Square With A Big Tree

Sketch the big tree first since everything else in this busy little scene arranges itself around it, then mark the stalls and a few small figures loosely around its base. Wash the sky and surrounding buildings in a thin grey blue, keeping the buildings simpler and paler than the tree so the eye knows where to land.

Brush the pale snow wash across the entire square next, letting it run slightly uneven, snow on a busy square is never perfectly smooth. Once that ground layer is dry, bring in warm little dabs of colour for the market stalls and the tiny figures, red and rust tones work beautifully against the cool snow.

The big tree gets its dark trunk and reaching branches once the stalls are dry, painted with a fairly dry brush so the lines stay crisp rather than soft. Finish with snow highlights scattered across the ground and small soft shadows under the stalls and tree, which anchors the whole square. If your figures start looking too detailed, step back, a market square reads better with suggestion than with faces. The tip: keep the tree’s branches thinning as they reach outward, a few confident strokes beat a dozen timid ones.

Snow Covered Stone Bridge

Pencil in the bridge’s arch carefully, since getting that curve right now saves you from fighting with it later in thick paint. Wash the sky and streamside trees thin and grey, then once that settles, pull a cold icy wash across the frozen stream, letting a little of the sky colour echo in the ice.

Paint the stone bridge next in warm greys, working the arch’s underside slightly darker than the top where light falls more directly. Beginners often paint the whole bridge one flat grey, so push a touch more brown into the sunlit side and more blue into the shaded side for real form.

Once the stone is dry to the touch, add dark detail lines along the wall edges and a few spare bare branches hanging in from the top of the scene. Finish with white highlights tracing the top of the wall and the brightest snow patches, plus a soft shadow curving under the arch where the stone blocks the light. A small filbert brush handles that arch shadow better than a flat one, since it follows the curve more naturally. The tip: let the stream’s ice show a hint of the grey sky reflected in it, it ties the whole scene together.

Village Bakery Window

Keep this one close up and intimate, sketching just the window itself with its frame, a shelf or two inside, and a soft pile of snow on the sill. Wash the wall around the window in a cool blue grey first, since the coldness outside is what makes the warm interior pop later.

Paint the snow on the sill next in soft pale white grey, letting its edge against the wall stay a little uneven and natural. Once that is dry, bring in the warm wooden frame and shutters, working the brown slightly textured so it reads as old timber rather than flat board.

The glowing interior comes last and matters most: load warm yellow and burnt sienna together, slightly wet, and let them melt softly into each other behind the glass, suggesting bread loaves and warm light without painting every detail. For more cozy window ideas, the still life oil painting ideas for beginners page has a few worth trying next. Finish with crisp white highlights on the snowy sill and a soft shadow beneath the frame to ground it. If your yellow turns too chalky, drop the white and let the sienna carry more warmth. The tip: paint the glass reflection as a few soft streaks of sky blue, it convinces the eye that glass is really there.

Children Building A Snowman

Sketch the children and the half built snowman small and loose, keeping their poses simple, arms reaching, one rolling a snowball. Wash the sky and distant rooftops thin first so the background stays quiet and lets the little scene in front hold attention.

Paint the snowy yard next in your pale blue white mix, brushing it slightly uneven near the children’s feet where real snow would be packed down and disturbed. Once dry, add colour to the children’s coats and hats, bright little reds and oranges against all that cool snow give the whole painting its warmth.

Dark scarves, buttons, and the snowman’s coal eyes go in with a fine round brush once those coat colours have set. Finish with white highlights across the snowman’s rounded form and the brightest patches of yard snow, then drop in soft grey shadows beneath each child and the snowman itself. If alizarin crimson runs too purple for you, a touch of cadmium red mixed in warms it back up. The tip for this scene: keep every figure’s shadow falling the same direction, it is the detail that quietly makes the whole yard feel like one real moment.

Horse Drawn Cart By A Frozen Well

Pencil the well and cart close together so they read as one small moment, then rough in the horse standing patient beside it. Wash the sky and the row of houses behind in a quick grey blue, keeping it loose since this part is only there to support what happens in front.

Paint the ground snow next around the cart wheels and well base, letting the white grey mix pool a little thicker near the well where snow tends to drift. Once dry, bring warm brown tones into the horse, the cart body, and the old stone well, varying the brush pressure so the stone looks rougher than the smooth cart wood.

Add dark wheel spokes, harness lines, and a few icy drips hanging off the well’s edge with a fine round brush. Finish with bright snow highlights along the well rim and scattered across the ground, plus a long soft shadow stretching from the cart to seat it firmly in the scene. If raw sienna looks too bright for the old stone, grey it down with a touch of payne’s grey. The tip: paint the icicles as single confident strokes, not outlines, thick at the top and tapering to nothing.

Row Of Candlelit Shop Fronts

Sketch a short row of shop fronts rather than a whole street, three or four is plenty, each with its own little sign and window. Wash the evening sky in a deep blue first, darker than your other village scenes here, since a near night sky makes every candlelit window glow twice as warm later.

Paint the snowy street next in a pale cool grey, keeping the far end of the street lighter and softer to suggest distance. Once dry, add gentle colour to the shop walls and signboards, a soft red here, a muted ochre there, nothing too loud.

The candle glow in each window is the heart of this scene, so load your brush with warm yellow and orange and let the colour sit slightly wet against the darker wall paint, blurring at the edges like real light. If you enjoy this warm glowing look, the winter junk journal pages carry the same candlelit mood on paper. Finish with snow highlights along the rooftops and street, and soft shadows beneath each shop front. The tip: vary the warmth of each window slightly, one more orange, one paler yellow, so the row feels like separate little homes rather than one repeated shape.

Frozen Pond With A Little Boathouse

Sketch the little boathouse sitting low at the pond’s edge, then rough in the frozen surface stretching out in front of it. Wash the sky and the bare tree line thin and grey, letting the brush stay loose since the trees are only there to frame the quiet little building.

While that sky layer is still a touch damp, pull your icy blue wash across the pond, letting the two colours blend slightly at the horizon the way real cold light does on ice. Once the pond is dry, paint the boathouse in warm grey brown, keeping its roofline simple and a little worn looking.

Add dark details next: the door, a small window frame, and a few dry reeds poking up through the ice near the bank, all with a small round brush. Finish with white highlights catching the roof edge and scattered across the ice, plus a soft shadow stretching from the boathouse onto the frozen surface. If cerulean blue runs too bright, grey it slightly with a touch of payne’s grey before it touches the canvas. The tip: keep the ice highlights as short broken strokes rather than one long line, it reads far more convincingly as a reflective surface.

Village Church Bells At Dusk

Sketch the bell tower standing tall over the square, keeping its proportions a little taller and narrower than your eye expects, it reads more dramatic that way at dusk. Wash the sky in a dusky purple blue mix, this is the one scene here where the sky itself carries most of the mood, so take your time blending it smooth.

Once that sky layer has set, paint the snowy square and rooftops below in your usual pale grey white, keeping them simple so the tower stays the clear star of the scene. Paint the tower’s stone next in warm raw umber lightened with white, working the top section slightly darker where dusk shadow gathers first.

Add dark detail into the bell openings and tower edges, plus a few tiny dark figures crossing the square far below, all with careful small strokes. Finish with crisp snow highlights along ledges and rooftops, and a soft long shadow stretching across the square from the tower’s base. If your purple sky turns too pink, a touch more ultramarine blue settles it back down. The tip: leave the very top of the tower slightly softer against the sky, it keeps the silhouette feeling like dusk rather than a cutout.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever village scene is calling to you, set out your cool blues and warm yellows side by side on the palette, and let one sitting carry you from that first pencil line to the last soft snow highlight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What oil paints do I actually need to start painting winter village scenes?

A basic set covers it: titanium white, payne’s grey, ultramarine blue, burnt umber, raw sienna or raw umber, cadmium yellow, and alizarin crimson. These seven mix almost every cool snow tone and warm window glow used across these lessons.

How long does oil paint take to dry between stages?

Thin underpainting layers are usually touch dry within a day, while thicker highlight strokes can take two to three days depending on humidity and paint thickness. Always test a hidden corner with a light fingertip before painting fresh detail over it.

Do I need to varnish a beginner oil painting once it is finished?

Not right away, since oil paint needs several months to cure fully before a final varnish goes on safely. A light touch up varnish can wait, so simply let the painting rest somewhere dry and dust free in the meantime.

Why does my snow look flat and grey instead of bright white?

Flat snow usually means the white was never mixed with a hint of blue or grey for the shadow sides, leaving no contrast against the pure white highlights. Reserve your purest white only for the brightest highlight stage, saved for last.

What is the easiest winter village scene here for a true first timer?

The cottage with smoke and lit windows is the gentlest start, since it is a single object with one glowing focal point rather than a full scene of figures and buildings. The warm window against cool snow teaches the core contrast quickly.
