I love a watercolor christmas cards tutorial more than almost any other painting project, because the whole card lives on one small page and you can finish it in an evening with a cup of something warm beside you. There is something about painting a tiny scene, a fox with a tree under its arm, a church window glowing gold, that feels like the season itself got smaller and friendlier and fit in your hand.

Below you will find fourteen different card fronts, each one walked through from the first pencil lines to the last gouache highlight, with the paints named at every stage so you never have to guess what comes next. Pick the one that matches tonight’s mood, lay out your paper, and let’s get painting.

Before You Start

• Use a small block of cold press watercolor paper, postcard size or smaller, so the pigment pools and dries fast enough to finish a card in one sitting.
• Keep your pencil sketch light and loose, since dark lines will show through pale washes and fight with the ink details later.
• Test every new color on a scrap strip first, especially the reds and greens, because they often dry two shades darker than they look wet.
• Let each wash dry fully before adding the next layer of color, or the edges will bleed into a soft blur instead of a crisp shape.
• Mix your white gouache slightly thicker than your watercolor, almost like cream, so the snow sits on top of the paper instead of sinking in.
• Save your gold paint and white gel pen for the very last stage, after every colored wash and shadow is dry, so the shine stays sharp and clean.

Fox With A Tiny Tree

Start this one with a light pencil sketch, placing the fox mid step with the tiny tree tucked under its chin or front leg. Keep the proportions simple, a round head, a long body, short legs, since a fox reads instantly even when it is drawn loose. Go over your lines with a fine black ink pen so the shape stays crisp once the washes go on top.

Wet the snowy ground and sky lightly and drop in a pale payne’s grey wash, letting it pool unevenly for a soft winter light. Once that is fully dry, paint the fox’s body in burnt orange with a damp brush, leaving the cheeks and belly paler by softening the edge with clean water while it is still wet.

Add pine green to the little tree and a darker burnt orange to the ear tips and tail for depth. Beginners often make the fox too orange all over, so keep one or two lighter patches to suggest the white belly fur.

Finish with a soft grey cast shadow under the paws and flick white gouache across the sky for falling snow. If your gouache feels too thin, mix in less water until it sits as a solid dot rather than a translucent smear.

Red Truck With A Tree

Sketch the truck as simple geometric shapes first, a box cab, a flat bed, round wheels, and a little tree leaning in the back. This subject forgives an imperfect pencil line since the strong red color will carry most of the charm. No ink is needed here, just keep the graphite faint under the paint.

Lay a pale yellow wash on the headlight circles and a soft grey where the cab will sit in shadow, letting both dry completely before the big color goes on. Then paint the entire truck body in one confident deep red wash, working quickly so the color stays even across the hood and bed.

Once the red is bone dry, paint the little tree in pine green with a smaller brush, and add charcoal grey to the wheels, grille lines and window frames to ground the truck and give it weight. This is the stage where beginners rush and smear red into the wheels, so wait the extra few minutes for full drying.

Finish with white gouache snow dusted on the truck roof and tree branches, then dot gold paint across the tree for ornaments and along the bumper for a festive shine. A dry brush loaded with very little gouache gives the most convincing light dusting of snow.

Snowy Village Church

Draw the church simply, a rectangle body, a triangle roof, a tall thin steeple, sitting on gently curved snow hills. A full scene like this benefits from the ink outline step, so trace your pencil lines with a fine black pen once you are happy with the shapes, then erase any stray pencil marks.

Wet the sky area and drop in indigo, letting it pool darker toward the top of the card for a true night feel. While that dries, wet the hill shapes separately and lay a pale payne’s grey wash across the snow, keeping the lowest patches almost white.

Once both are dry, paint the church walls in burnt sienna and the roof and steeple in a soft payne’s grey, working one wall at a time so the colors stay clean within the ink lines. If the stone wash looks patchy, a second light layer once the first is dry will even it out nicely.

Finish by painting the little windows in gold so they glow against the dark sky, then add white gouache snow along every roofline and across the hills. A white gel pen flicked across the indigo sky makes convincing tiny stars and finishes the card beautifully.

Robin On A Holly Branch

Sketch the robin as a round body with a small head and a thin branch curving beneath its feet, then add a few holly leaves fanning out to one side. Keep the bird’s shape soft and rounded, since a robin’s charm comes from that plump chest rather than sharp detail.

Paint the back and wings in a pale payne’s grey first, leaving the chest area dry and white for now. Once that layer has dried, brush deep red across the chest and belly, letting the color sit richer toward the center and fade slightly at the edges with a damp brush.

Paint every holly leaf in pine green, varying the pressure so some leaves look a touch darker than others for natural variety. This is the stage where it is easy to flood the leaves and lose their pointed shape, so use a smaller brush and work leaf by leaf.

Add deep red berry clusters with the tip of your brush and a warm burnt sienna along the branch for bark texture. Finish with a tiny white gouache dot on the eye and belly for light, plus a soft grey shadow beneath the branch to settle the robin onto the page.

Mice Wrapping A Present

Sketch two round little mice leaning over a box, one holding the ribbon and the other pressing down the lid, with simple oval bodies and thin tails curling behind them. Trace the whole scene in fine black ink once the pencil feels right, since the small shapes here need a clean line to stay readable at this size.

Wash both mice bodies in a pale payne’s grey, keeping the wash thin enough that the paper still shows through for a soft furry look. Let that dry fully, then paint the gift box in a rich deep red and the inside of each mouse ear in the palest pink.

Paint the ribbon in gold once the red box is dry, working carefully along the ink lines so the wrap looks neat and tidy. Beginners often let the gold bleed into the red, so use a nearly dry brush for this thin ribbon shape.

Finish with a white gel pen or thin white gouache line for each mouse’s whiskers, a few snow specks scattered around the scene, and a soft grey shadow beneath the box to ground it. For more small creature practice before this one, these easy watercolor animals lessons cover the same gentle painting pace.

Holly Berry Wreath

Draw a simple circle guide first, then build pointed holly leaves around it in a ring, keeping some leaves overlapping for a fuller look. Erase the guide circle lightly once the leaves are placed so it does not show through the green wash.

Wet the whole wreath shape and drop in a pale pine green, letting it pool naturally so some leaves come out lighter than others. Once bone dry, go back with a darker green on every second or third leaf to build real depth, since a wreath painted in one flat green tends to look like a solid blob rather than individual leaves.

Paint small clusters of deep red berries in the gaps between leaves, grouping them in threes for a natural holly look. Add a gold bow at the bottom with two ribbon tails trailing down, using a drier brush so the gold stays bright rather than watery.

Finish with white gouache flicked lightly across the top of the wreath for a dusting of snow. If you enjoy wreath and greenery shapes, browsing more christmas watercolor ideas is a good way to find your next card.

Candy Cane And Pine Sprig

Sketch a simple curved candy cane shape, like a cane or an upside down J, and add a small sprig of pine needles resting against its base. This is a quick subject, perfect for when you want a finished card without a long painting session.

Wash the entire candy cane in a very pale cream first so the white stripes have a slightly warm base rather than stark bare paper. Once dry, paint the pine sprig in pine green with short quick brush strokes to suggest individual needles.

Paint diagonal deep red stripes across the candy cane, spacing them evenly and leaving the cream base showing between each one. Go slowly here, since candy cane stripes are the whole point of the subject and uneven spacing is the most common slip, easily fixed by sketching faint pencil guide lines first.

Add small gold dots along the pine sprig for a festive touch, then finish with a thin white gouache line along one edge of the cane for shine and a soft shadow beneath both shapes to seat them on the page.

Cardinal In Snowfall

Sketch the cardinal as a rounded body with a small pointed crest on the head, perched on a simple bare branch that crosses the card. Cardinals read well even simplified, so do not worry about exact feather shapes at the pencil stage.

Wash a pale grey blue behind the branch for a soft winter sky, keeping it light so the red bird pops forward once painted. Let it dry fully, then paint the whole cardinal body in a bright, confident red, working wet enough that the color flows smoothly across the rounded shape.

Once the red is dry, add charcoal grey around the eye and beak area and along the wing edge for the cardinal’s natural markings. Beginners sometimes paint this mask too large and lose the bird’s face, so keep it small and centered around the eye.

Paint the branch in burnt sienna beneath the bird’s feet, then finish with white gouache snow resting along the top of the branch and a few soft flakes drifting in the sky. A small grey shadow under the bird’s belly where it meets the branch adds the last bit of weight and realism.

Snowman With Scarf

Draw three stacked circles of decreasing size for the body and head, then add two thin stick arms and a simple scarf shape around the neck. Keep the circles a little uneven and soft rather than perfectly round, since a slightly wobbly snowman feels more handmade and warm.

Mix a very pale blue grey and wash it along one side of each snowball to suggest gentle shading, leaving the opposite side bare white paper. This single wash is what gives the snowman roundness, so resist the urge to skip it even though the body stays mostly white.

Once dry, paint the scarf in deep red with loose brush strokes to suggest the knit texture, and add pine green to a small hat or a tiny tree tucked beside him. Add charcoal grey dots for the coal eyes, buttons down the front, and the thin stick arms.

Finish with white gouache dabbed along the sunlit edge of each snowball for extra sparkle, plus a few dots scattered around the card for falling snow. This same light touch with white gouache for holiday scenes shows up often in watercolor christmas card ideas if you want more snowy inspiration.

Gingerbread House

Sketch a simple square house with a triangular roof, a small door, and two little windows, keeping all the lines straight and tidy since this subject relies on neat geometry. A ruler for the first pencil guide lines is a perfectly good shortcut if your hand is not steady.

Wash the whole house in a warm burnt sienna, letting the color dry a touch darker in the roof area for contrast against the walls. Once fully dry, paint the door and window shutters in deep red, keeping the shapes crisp by painting right up to the pencil line and no further.

Add a tiny pine green wreath above the door and a small matching tree beside the house for extra charm. This is the stage to slow down, since small details painted too quickly tend to blob together on a card this size.

Finish with gold dots tracing the roofline like candy trim and one gold dot for the door handle, then white gouache drizzled along the roof edges like icing and piled softly at the base of the house like drifted snow.

Ice Skates On A Branch

Sketch two simple ice skate boots with curved blades beneath them, crossed laces at the top tied over a thin branch. Keep the blade shape a single smooth curve, since a wobbly blade line is the easiest part of this drawing to get wrong.

Paint the blades first in a pale payne’s grey so the metal reads cool and bright against the warmer boot color to come. Once that dries, paint the leather boots in deep red, leaving the laces as thin bare white lines by painting carefully around them.

Paint the branch in burnt sienna beneath the hanging skates, and tuck a tiny pine green sprig into the crossed laces for a festive touch. Add small gold dots where the eyelets would sit along the top of each boot.

Finish with a streak of white gouache down each blade for a metallic shine and a soft grey shadow beneath the boots where they would catch the light. If the laces look too thick after painting around them, a fine white gel pen can thin and clean up the line at the very end.

Christmas Pudding

Sketch a simple round dome shape sitting on a small plate, with a sprig of holly perched at the top. The pudding shape is forgiving and round, so this card comes together quickly even for a first attempt at food subjects.

Wash the whole dome in a warm dark brown, letting it pool a little darker toward the base of the pudding for natural shading. Once that layer is dry, dab in deeper burnt umber unevenly across the surface with a nearly dry brush to suggest the dense, speckled texture of a real pudding.

Paint the holly leaves on top in pine green and the berries in deep red, keeping both small and neat since they are the brightest spot on an otherwise brown card. This contrast is what makes the whole subject feel festive rather than just a brown blob on the page.

Finish with white gouache painted in a loose drizzle running down the sides of the pudding like icing, plus a soft shadow beneath the plate to ground it on the card. Thin the gouache slightly more than usual here so the drizzle flows in a believable thin line.

Winter Cottage Window

Sketch a simple square window with shutters on either side and a small round wreath hanging in the center, as if viewed from outside at dusk. Trace the whole drawing in fine black ink, since the straight window frame lines need to stay crisp against the washes.

Wash the window pane itself in a deep indigo to suggest the warm dark glow of a room lit from inside, letting the edges stay a little soft and uneven. Once completely dry, paint both shutters in a confident deep red, working each one separately so the color does not bleed across the window frame.

Paint the small wreath in pine green with a few quick strokes, then once dry add tiny deep red berries if you like extra detail. Keep the wreath simple here, since the window and shutters already carry most of the card’s color.

Finish with a thin gold wash glowing just inside the window pane edges for warmth, and white gouache piled along the windowsill and shutter tops for snow. These cozy window scenes pair nicely with full village cards if you want to build christmas sketchbook ideas around the same snug, lit window theme.

Sleigh Full Of Gifts

Sketch the sleigh as a curved base with tall decorative runners, then pile a cluster of simple rectangular and square gift boxes into the seat area. Vary the box sizes a little so the pile looks natural rather than a stack of identical cubes.

Paint the curved metal runners in a pale payne’s grey first, since this cool tone will sit nicely beneath the warmer red sleigh body to come. Once dry, paint the main body of the sleigh in deep red, following the curve of the wood with smooth, confident strokes.

Paint the stacked gift boxes next, alternating pine green and deep red so neighboring boxes contrast with each other. Let each box dry before painting the one touching it, or the colors will bleed together and the gifts will lose their separate shapes, a very common slip on this busy subject.

Add gold ribbons wrapped across every box once all the base colors are dry, using a fine brush for clean crossing lines. Finish with white gouache dusted along the top edges of the sleigh and boxes, plus a soft grey shadow beneath the runners to settle the whole sleigh onto the snow.

What to Do Next

Pick one card, set out your palette, and let the first pencil lines go down loose and light, the rest will follow stage by stage from there.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paper works best for a watercolor christmas cards tutorial?

A small block of cold press watercolor paper works best, since its texture holds washes nicely at card size. Anything under 140 lb will buckle, so choose a slightly heavier block or postcard pad made for watercolor.

How do I get the white gouache snow to look right?

Mix the gouache thicker than your watercolor, close to the texture of cream, and apply it only once every colored layer beneath is fully dry. Too much water makes it sink into the paper and look grey instead of white.

Can I skip the ink outline on the scene style cards?

You can, but the ink keeps small shapes like church windows or wreath leaves crisp once washes go on top. For simpler object cards like the truck or pudding, a light pencil line alone works perfectly well.

How do I stop my reds and greens from bleeding into each other?

Let each color dry completely before painting the shape right next to it, especially on busy cards like the sleigh of gifts. A quick touch test with a clean finger on a dry corner of the wash confirms it is ready.

What if I do not have gold watercolor paint?

A gold gel pen or a small tube of gold acrylic mixed thin makes a fine substitute and adds the same festive shine. Apply it only at the very last stage, after every wash and gouache highlight has dried fully.
