28 Observational Drawing Sketchbook Ideas of Kitchen Corners, Garden Sheds and Cafe Tables

32

An observational drawing sketchbook works best when you stop hunting for something pretty and just draw the room you are already sitting in. The kettle on the counter, the shoes by the door, the bus seat on your way home: all of it is sitting there waiting, lit exactly how it happens to be lit right now, and that honesty is what makes these pages so satisfying to fill.

Below are 28 ordinary corners to sit with for twenty or thirty minutes each, every one finishable today with pencil, a fineliner and a light wash if you want colour. Pick whichever one is closest to you right now and start there.

Start your observational drawing sketchback habit somewhere you already stand every morning: the kitchen counter with its kettle, a row of jars and a tea towel slung over the oven handle. Pull a chair up, give yourself a clear sightline, and spend a minute just looking before the pencil touches the page.

Block in the kettle first as a simple cylinder with a curved spout, then place the jars beside it by comparing their heights against the kettle rather than guessing: hold your pencil up at arm’s length and measure, and you will catch how much shorter that jar really is. Ink the confident outlines with a fineliner once the pencil feels right, then erase the stray pencil marks before you add a light wash.

The usual snag here is making every jar the same size out of habit. Keep checking real proportions against each other as you go, and if your counter is too busy, simplify by drawing only three objects and leaving the rest as suggestion.

Finish with a wash of warm grey under the kettle’s shadow side, and let the tea towel’s folds stay loose rather than overworked.

Move outside for this one: a garden shed doorway, half open, with tools leaning against the frame and a cluster of terracotta pots at the step. The doorway itself gives you a strong rectangle to build everything else inside, so draw that frame first and treat it as your whole composition’s edge.

Place the darkest shape inside the shed (the shadowed interior) as a flat dark shape before anything else, because that dark rectangle anchors the light tools and pots in front of it. Work outward from there, drawing the spade or rake leaning at an angle against the doorframe, then the stacked pots with their rims as simple ellipses.

Where this goes wrong is losing the shed’s darkness by adding too much detail inside it. Keep the interior mostly flat and dark, and let the sunlit tools and pot rims do the storytelling instead. If you cannot get outside, a photo on your phone of your own shed or porch works just as well for reference.

A wash of muted green over the pots and warm brown over the wood finishes it without fuss.

A cafe table gives you a built-in reason to draw fast: the cake will not wait, and neither will the coffee going cold. Settle at a real table if you can, or set up a slice and a cup at your own kitchen table for the same light and clutter.

Draw the cup first since its ellipse sets the scale for everything else on the table, then add the plate and the cake slice, noting how much has already been eaten rather than drawing a full, untouched slice. Let crumbs and a smear of icing on the plate stay loose marks rather than tidy shapes.

This subject reads much better with eye level in mind: if you are looking down at the table, every ellipse (the cup rim, the plate) opens wider than you expect, so check that curve against a real circle before you commit to the pencil line. A few readers draw the ellipses too narrow and flat, which tips the whole table over visually.

Wash the cake in a warm tan and let the coffee cup’s dark interior carry most of the contrast. If you enjoy drawing cafe scenes, the Paris sketchbook ideas page has more table moments worth trying.

A parked bicycle against brick is a good test of patience because the frame is mostly straight lines and circles that have to agree with each other, or the whole thing looks wrong immediately. Find a bike near you, step back enough to see the whole thing, and start with the two wheels as circles of matching size.

Draw the frame’s triangle shapes next, connecting wheel to wheel through the seat and handlebars, checking the angle of the top tube against the wheels rather than drawing it from memory. Add the brick wall last as a loose grid behind the bike, letting the lines curve slightly to suggest the wall is not perfectly flat.

Wheels are the usual trouble spot: draw the far wheel slightly smaller and higher than the near one if the bike sits at an angle to you, which keeps the perspective honest. A kneaded eraser is handy here for lifting pencil guidelines without smudging the ink once you have committed to final lines.

Finish the bricks with a rough terracotta wash, leaving mortar lines as thin strips of untouched cream paper.

Try drawing the bicycle from a low angle, sitting on the ground, to make the wheels loom larger and the wall recede behind it with more drama.

A staircase lit by a window partway up is one of the most rewarding corners to draw because the light does half the work for you. Find a staircase at home or in a hallway you pass through, and time your sketch for whenever the sun falls across a few of the steps at an angle.

Draw the steps first as a simple repeating wedge shape, keeping each one slightly smaller as it climbs away from you, then lightly pencil in where the sunlight actually lands before you ink anything. That sunlit patch becomes the one area of the page you leave almost white, which is what makes the rest of the staircase feel shadowed by comparison.

Ink the step edges and the banister’s verticals with a ruler if your hand needs steadying, then add pencil shading only on the shadow side of each step. Overworking every step equally is the trap here: let two or three carry all the contrast and leave the rest as quick suggestion.

A pale yellow wash across the sunlit patch and a cool grey wash in shadow finishes the effect in under a minute.

The kitchen sink after a meal is cluttered in a way that is actually easier to draw than a tidy one, because the stacked plates and a cup or two give you natural overlapping shapes to practise. Add the plant on the windowsill behind it for a second subject in the same page without moving your chair.

Draw the sink basin as a simple rectangle or oval first, then stack the dishes inside it from back to front, overlapping each plate slightly rather than drawing them as separate floating circles. The windowsill plant goes in last as a loose cluster of leaf shapes, kept simpler than the dishes so it does not compete for attention.

Reflections in a wet sink or on glass are the part people avoid, but a few short horizontal pencil strokes under the tap is all you need to suggest water, no need to render it exactly. If your own sink is empty right now, a bowl and a couple of mugs set up deliberately works just as well.

Wash the plant leaves in two greens, one lighter than the other, to give the whole corner some life against the grey dishes.

An unmade bed is honestly one of the best subjects for practising folds, because the rumpled sheet and pushed-back duvet give you dozens of small shadow shapes to observe rather than invent. Draw it first thing if you can, while the morning light is still low and comes in at an angle across the covers.

Block in the overall shape of the bed and pillows loosely in pencil, then look for the two or three darkest folds in the duvet and draw those shadow shapes directly rather than outlining every wrinkle individually. Treat each fold as a flat dark shape with a soft edge, not a hard pencil line.

People tend to draw every crease the same weight, which flattens the whole bed. Pick a light source (the window) and keep folds facing away from it noticeably darker than folds facing toward it, and the bed will read as three-dimensional almost by accident.

Wash the sheets in a pale blue-grey and leave the sunlit pillow nearly untouched white paper for contrast.

Drawing on a moving bus trains your eye to work fast, since nothing stays still for long, so keep this sketch loose from the first mark. Sit somewhere you can see a row of seats and at least one window, and aim to capture the gist in ten minutes rather than a finished page.

Draw the nearest seat back first as your anchor shape, then the row of seats behind it getting progressively smaller, letting the bus’s gentle curve and the window frames guide the perspective rather than measuring precisely. Windows are quick rectangles with a hint of blurred view inside, nothing needs full detail.

In ten minutes you will likely get the seats and windows down in pencil with a few ink lines over the top. Given forty, add the view through the glass, a bag on a seat, or the texture of the seat fabric with cross-hatching, which is what turns a quick gesture into a fuller page.

A grey wash over the seats and a pale blue hint behind the glass keeps the whole scene calm and quick to finish while you are still moving.

A greenhouse corner gives you trays of seedlings lined up in rows, which sounds repetitive but is actually a good chance to practise drawing the same small shape with slight variation each time, since no two seedlings ever grow quite the same. Find a greenhouse, a windowsill propagator, or even a few pots on a sunny step.

Draw the tray or pots as your structural shapes first, then add the seedlings stem by stem, keeping most of them a simple upright line with two small leaf shapes at the top. Let a few lean at slightly different angles rather than drawing them all perfectly straight, which is what real seedlings actually do.

If your reference is too packed with identical little plants, simplify by drawing one tray in full detail and suggesting the rest with looser, quicker marks toward the edges of the page. That contrast between detailed and loose keeps the whole thing readable instead of overwhelming.

A fresh green wash over the leaves and a warm brown over the soil in the tray finishes the corner nicely.

A stack of folded laundry on a chair is a quiet, forgiving subject because the shapes are already soft and forgiving of small drawing mistakes. Pile some actual laundry on a chair near good light, or draw it wherever it naturally lands on wash day.

Draw the chair’s visible outline first as a loose frame, then build the laundry stack from the bottom up, drawing each folded item as a simple rounded rectangle before adding any fabric detail. Vary the thickness of each stacked item slightly so the pile does not look like identical bricks.

The chair’s edges tend to disappear under the laundry, and that is fine: let the chair legs and maybe one armrest poke out to anchor the pile in space, and do not force the rest of the chair to be visible. If you do not have a chair free, a laundry basket works as a substitute shape just as well.

Wash each fold in a slightly different pale colour (a soft blue shirt, a cream towel) so the stack reads as separate garments rather than one grey mass.

Shoes kicked off by the front door are a classic observational drawing sketchbook subject because they are full of personality without needing a single invented detail: the worn heel, the loose lace, the mismatched pair. Line a few of your own up by the door, or draw them exactly as you find them.

Draw the sole of each shoe first as a simple curved baseline, since that ground contact is what makes a shoe look like it is actually resting rather than floating. Build the rest of the shoe shape up from there, and let laces trail loosely rather than drawing them perfectly tied.

Shoes often end up looking stiff because the proportions get guessed rather than observed: hold your pencil up and check how the shoe’s length compares to its height, since most beginners draw shoes too tall and short. Scuffs and creases in the leather are quick textural pencil marks, not something to render in full.

A warm brown wash for leather shoes or a soft grey for canvas ones finishes the pair with very little effort.

A bathroom shelf crowded with toothbrushes in a cup, a bar of soap and a tube of something half-squeezed is small, specific and genuinely fun to draw because every object has such a distinct shape. Set your own shelf up as is, clutter included, and draw it at eye level from where you actually stand to brush your teeth.

Draw the cup holding the toothbrushes first since its cylinder shape anchors the whole shelf, then add each toothbrush as a thin line with a small rounded head, letting them lean at slightly different angles inside the cup. The soap and tube come last, drawn smaller and lower in the composition so the eye lands on the cup first.

Glass and tile surfaces tempt people to add too much reflective detail. Keep reflections to one or two short white highlight strokes left as bare paper, and resist outlining every tile behind the shelf.

A pale blue-green wash across the tile background and a soft white left for the soap keeps the whole page feeling clean and quick.

Drawing the view through a car windshield, with the dashboard and wipers framing whatever is outside, gives you a built-in composition before you have drawn a single line, since the windshield’s shape does the framing for you. Draw it as a passenger, parked, so you are not distracted while moving.

Start with the windshield frame and dashboard shapes, including the rear-view mirror hanging in the upper portion, since these interior shapes stay still even if the view outside keeps changing. Sketch the road or scenery beyond more loosely and quickly, since it matters less than the solid interior frame around it.

Eye level matters a lot here: sitting low in a car seat means the dashboard rises higher in your view than you expect, so check how much of the windshield the dashboard actually covers before committing to the pencil line. Drawing the dashboard too low is the most common slip.

A grey wash for the dashboard and a pale wash for the sky beyond finishes it in a few quick strokes.

A pile of stacked firewood beside a stove is pure texture practice: every log is roughly a cylinder, but bark, cut ends and shadow between pieces give you endless small marks to make. Stack some logs near a stove or fireplace, or use a basket of kindling if that is what you have.

Draw the overall pile shape first as a loose triangle or mound, then fill in individual logs as simple rounded rectangles, paying attention to where each log’s cut end faces you versus where you see its bark side. The dark gaps between logs are as important as the logs themselves, so draw those shadow shapes directly rather than leaving them blank.

Bark texture is the fun part but also where people overwork things: a few short broken pencil strokes along one or two logs is enough to suggest rough bark, and the rest of the pile can stay simpler. Quick cross-hatching works as a swap if you do not want to fuss with separate bark marks.

Wash the logs in warm brown and leave the gaps between them nearly black for contrast against the stove.

A dressing table scattered with brushes, a mirror and a perfume bottle or two is a lovely little still life that is already arranged for you, no setup needed beyond sitting down in front of your own. The glass and metal surfaces here reward a bit of patience with highlights.

Draw the mirror’s frame first if it is in view, since it often sets the whole page’s boundary, then place the perfume bottle as your focal object with its cap and label roughly blocked in before any fine detail. Brushes scattered around it come last as simple handle-and-bristle shapes, some upright, some lying flat.

Glass bottles catch light in a very specific way: look for one bright highlight and one darker reflected shadow on the bottle, and leave the highlight as bare paper rather than painting white over it later. Reserving white space while you draw saves you from fighting the paper afterward.

A pale pink or amber wash for the perfume and soft grey for the brush handles finishes the table with a gentle, pretty page.

Palette: Rose Pink,Payne’s Grey,Naples Yellow

Try angling the mirror into the drawing so it reflects a second, smaller view of the table, which adds depth without adding new objects to find.

The kitchen table right after dinner, plates not yet cleared, a napkin crumpled beside a glass, is one of the richest observational drawing sketchbook subjects because nothing on it was arranged for you. Sit down before anyone clears up and draw it exactly as it sits.

Draw the table’s edge first to establish your eye level, then place each plate and glass by comparing its position against the table edge rather than guessing where it floats. Overlap objects naturally, letting a glass partly hide behind a plate if that is how it actually sits, since forcing everything into full view flattens the scene.

Crumbs, a dropped fork, a stained napkin: these small details are what make this kind of page sing, but they only need a few confident marks each rather than careful rendering. Spend most of your ink on the plates and glasses, and let the smaller scattered things stay quick gestures.

A warm grey wash across the tablecloth and small warm touches of colour on any leftover food ties the whole page together. If you enjoy kitchen subjects like this, the cooking drawing ideas page has more to explore.

A window with curtains caught mid-movement by a breeze asks you to draw fabric in motion rather than fabric lying still, which is a genuinely different skill worth practising. Open a window near fabric curtains on a breezy day, or recreate the effect with a fan if the weather will not cooperate.

Draw the window frame first as your fixed structure, then watch the curtain for a moment before committing to its shape, since the folds of blowing fabric fall in long diagonal sweeps rather than the vertical hang of a still curtain. Capture that general diagonal direction in a few confident pencil lines before adding smaller fold details.

Fabric caught in motion is often drawn too stiff, with folds running straight up and down out of habit. Keep reminding yourself the breeze is pulling the fabric sideways, and let every fold lean that direction even in the smaller wrinkles.

A pale wash with the window’s outside view kept simple, just colour and light, and the curtain itself left mostly white with blue-grey shadow in the folds, finishes the page with real movement in it.

A desk lamp throwing light onto an open notebook is a great subject for practising a single strong light source, since everything in the scene answers to that one lamp. Switch on a lamp at your own desk in a dim room and draw the pool of light it creates.

Draw the lamp itself first, then the notebook beneath it, and before adding any shading, lightly pencil in the rough shape of the lit pool on the page and desk, since that shape tells you everywhere else to leave dark. Work from that lit shape outward into the shadow rather than drawing the dark first and hoping the light fits in later.

The mistake most people make with lamp light is shading too evenly, which kills the glow entirely. Keep the area right under the bulb nearly white, and let the shadow deepen gradually as it moves away from the light, with the darkest areas at the edges of the page.

A warm yellow wash around the bulb fading into cool grey at the page edges sells the whole effect convincingly.

A coat rack by the door, hung with a coat, a bag and an umbrella leaning against it, gives you a cluster of hanging shapes all gravity-dependent in a similar way, which makes for good practice drawing weight and drape together. Use your own hallway rack exactly as it is, no tidying required.

Draw the rack’s vertical pole or hooks first as your fixed structure, then hang each item from its actual hook point, letting coats and bags fall naturally downward rather than floating away from their hooks. The umbrella, if closed and leaning, is a simple long cylinder shape that breaks the rack’s vertical rhythm nicely.

Coats in particular tend to get drawn too symmetrical, like a cutout shape, when real hanging fabric pulls unevenly to one side under its own weight. Let one side hang lower or bunch more than the other for a much more convincing coat.

A deep wash for the coat and a lighter one for the bag keeps the items visually distinct from each other on the page.

A cat curled or sitting among potted plants on a windowsill is a wonderful subject because cats hold stillness so well, giving you plenty of time to actually observe rather than work from memory. Draw your own cat if it will cooperate, or settle for sketching quickly between naps.

Draw the cat’s basic body shape first as a soft oval, since most cats at rest are essentially one rounded form with a head and tail attached, then add the pots around it only after the cat’s pose feels settled on the page. Ears and whiskers go in last, as the smallest, final details.

Cats often end up looking stiff or doglike because the spine’s curve gets straightened out by accident. Study the actual curve of the cat’s back, however slouched or curled it is, and exaggerate that curve slightly rather than flattening it. This subject also fits nicely alongside other animal pages if you want more practice, like the cute animal drawing ideas list.

Wash the cat in soft grey or tabby brown and let the plant pots carry a few touches of green for contrast.

A wooden crate stacked with vegetables at a market stall is a fantastic subject for practising a variety of rounded forms side by side, since no two vegetables share quite the same shape or colour. Visit a local market or greengrocer, or simply arrange a crate of vegetables from your own kitchen.

Draw the crate itself first as a simple wooden box shape, since its straight edges give you a stable frame to fit the irregular vegetables into. Build the vegetables from biggest to smallest, starting with whatever fills the most space (a cluster of potatoes or a few peppers) before adding smaller items tucked into the gaps.

Every vegetable has its own near-circular logic: a tomato’s slight flattening at top and bottom, a carrot’s taper to a point. Look at each shape individually rather than drawing a generic round blob for all of them, which is the easiest way this subject turns dull.

Wash each vegetable in its own colour, keeping the crate itself a plain warm brown so the produce stands out. The tomato drawing ideas page is worth a look if the tomatoes in your crate catch your eye most.

An armchair with a blanket folded or draped over one arm is a calm, forgiving subject that is mostly about soft shapes settling into each other, which makes it a nice one to slow down with. Draw your own favourite chair exactly as it sits, blanket and all.

Draw the armchair’s overall silhouette first in pencil, keeping the proportions of seat to backrest to arms roughly even by eye before adding any detail. Drape the blanket over the arm last, letting it fall and fold naturally rather than drawing it as a flat rectangle laid on top.

Soft furniture like this often loses its squashy feel because every line gets drawn too straight and crisp. Keep the chair’s outline slightly uneven and let cushion seams sag a little, which reads as far more comfortable and real than a perfectly symmetrical chair.

A wash of deep warm colour for the chair fabric and a lighter contrasting tone for the blanket keeps the two elements distinct from one another on the page.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Naples Yellow,Payne’s Grey

A playground slide, drawn from a bench nearby, gives you strong simple curves and a bit of a perspective challenge worth taking on. Sit at a comfortable distance from a real slide, or work from a clear photo if drawing in a playground feels conspicuous.

Draw the slide’s main curve first as a single confident pencil line, since everything else (the steps, the side rails, the platform at top) attaches to that one sweeping shape. Add the ladder or steps up to the platform next, checking how many steps actually fit against the slide’s height rather than guessing a round number.

Perspective matters a lot here: if you are looking up at the slide from below, the top platform will appear smaller and the nearest step larger than you expect, and drawing it flat and even is the most common mistake with this subject. Let the far end of the slide genuinely shrink on the page.

A bright primary colour wash for the slide itself against a plain pale sky keeps the whole page cheerful and quick.

Palette: Cadmium Red,Cerulean Blue,Cadmium Yellow

A garden bench scattered with fallen leaves is a quietly lovely subject that mixes a solid man-made structure with the loose, scattered randomness of leaves settling wherever they land. Find a bench outside, or simply scatter a handful of leaves across a chair if the season or weather keeps you indoors.

Draw the bench’s wooden slats and legs first as your firm structure, keeping the horizontal slats evenly spaced by eye before anything else goes on top. Scatter the leaves afterward, drawing each one as a quick simple leaf shape at a different angle, letting a few overlap the bench’s edge rather than sitting neatly within its boundary.

Leaves drawn too uniformly in size and colour flatten the whole scene into wallpaper. Vary each leaf’s size, angle and wash colour (one more orange, one more brown, one still partly green) so the scatter feels like it actually fell that way.

A warm autumn palette across the leaves against the bench’s plain wood wash finishes the page with real seasonal warmth.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cadmium Orange,Raw Umber

A pantry shelf lined with tins and jars is good practice for keeping a row of similar objects from looking identical, since every tin label and jar shape differs just slightly from its neighbour if you actually look. Open your own pantry or cupboard and draw a shelf exactly as it sits.

Draw the shelf edge first as a simple horizontal line, then place each tin or jar along it, varying their heights and widths by comparing each one against its neighbour rather than drawing a uniform row. Labels only need a few loose pencil marks or a hint of lettering shape, never full legible text.

The trap here is drawing every container as the exact same cylinder, which makes the whole shelf look like wallpaper rather than a real pantry. Let a few jars sit slightly forward of others, and vary their widths noticeably so the row has genuine rhythm.

A few different washes (a red label here, a green jar lid there) breaks up the row nicely without needing much extra drawing time.

Palette: Cadmium Red,Sap Green,Raw Sienna

A fridge door covered in magnets, photos and the odd stray note is a genuinely fun observational drawing sketchbook subject because it is essentially a wall of tiny separate drawings held together by one flat surface. Draw your own fridge door exactly as it is cluttered, no tidying beforehand.

Draw the fridge’s flat rectangular outline first, then place the biggest or most eye-catching item (a large photo or magnet) roughly where it actually sits before filling in smaller items around it. Treat each photo as a simple rectangle with just a hint of what is inside it, and each magnet as a tiny simple shape, since full detail on every item would take far longer than one sitting allows.

Choosing what to leave out matters more than usual here: pick five or six items that genuinely catch your eye and suggest the rest with loose scribbled rectangles, rather than attempting to draw every single magnet on a crowded door.

A few bright washes scattered across the chosen items, leaving the fridge itself plain white or pale grey, makes the clutter feel colourful and intentional rather than messy.

Palette: Cadmium Red,Cerulean Blue,Cadmium Yellow

A bookshelf corner with a trailing plant tucked between the books is a satisfying way to close out a sketchbook session, mixing straight-edged spines with the loose organic shape of leaves. Find a shelf at home with both books and a plant nearby, even a small one on top of a stack.

Draw the bookshelf’s vertical and horizontal structure first, then the books themselves as a row of slightly uneven rectangles, varying height and thickness so the row has genuine rhythm rather than looking like a printed pattern. The plant goes in last, trailing down or across the shelf edge, with leaves drawn as simple pointed or rounded shapes depending on what you actually have.

Book spines often get drawn identically wide and upright out of habit, which looks less convincing than a real shelf where books lean and vary. Let two or three lean against their neighbours at a slight angle.

Wash the book spines in a mix of colours and the plant in two shades of green, which gives this quiet corner plenty of life on the page. If this kind of quiet still life appeals, the botanical sketchbook pages have more plant-focused ideas to try next.

Palette: Sap Green,Cerulean Blue,Cadmium Red

Closing your observational drawing sketchbook with a train seat, a coffee cup balanced on the little fold-down table and the view sliding past the window, ties together everything you have practised: interiors, objects and a bit of loose outside scenery all in one page. Draw this one on an actual journey if you can, or recreate the setup at your own table by a window.

Draw the seat and table edge first as your stable interior shapes, then the coffee cup sitting on the table, checking its ellipse against the table’s edge for scale. The view through the window comes last and loosest of all, just a few quick horizontal marks suggesting fields, buildings or sky blurring past.

Motion is the whole point of this subject, so resist the urge to render the outside view with the same care as the coffee cup. Keep it fast, smeared, almost out of focus, which contrasts nicely against the still, carefully drawn interior details.

A grey wash for the seat, a warm wash for the coffee, and a loose blurred wash for the view outside finishes a page that captures the whole feeling of travelling while sketching.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever corner of your day is closest to you right now, open your sketchbook to a fresh cream page, and give yourself permission to draw it exactly as it sits, clutter and all. A soft pencil, a fineliner and a small watercolor set are all this takes to finish a page today.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an observational drawing sketchbook used for?

It is a sketchbook kept specifically for drawing real things directly from life, rather than from imagination or photos. Each page records a genuine corner of a room, a street or a table exactly as it looked at that moment.

What pencil is best for observational drawing?

A mid-range graphite pencil, around 2B, suits most observational sketchbook work since it is soft enough for quick shading but still holds a point for detail. Add a fineliner for confident final outlines once the pencil layout feels right.

How long should one observational drawing sketchbook page take?

Most pages in this list finish comfortably in twenty to forty minutes, depending on how much detail you add. A quick version in ten minutes is always possible by sticking to the main shapes and skipping fine texture.

Do I need watercolor for an observational drawing sketchbook?

No, pencil and fineliner alone make a complete page on their own. A light watercolor wash simply adds mood and colour on top, and gouache or coloured pencil both work as swaps if you prefer a different medium.

What should I draw first in a cluttered scene?

Draw the single largest or most structural shape first, such as a table edge, a window frame or a chair back, since everything else in the scene can then be measured and placed against that one anchor shape.
