33 Sketchbook Fillers of Fridge Shelves, Handbag Treasures and Kitchen Drawers

37

Sketchbook fillers are the pages that rescue a blank book from sitting on the shelf unopened. Instead of hunting for a worthy subject, you draw what is already in front of you: the mugs in the cupboard, the shoes by the door, the fridge shelf you just closed. Nothing here needs a reference photo or a plan, because the plan is your own room.

Below are 33 full pages built from ordinary things, each one quick, honest and done in a single sitting. Pick whichever matches where you are standing right now and start drawing.

Tip your handbag out on the table and you have a whole page waiting. Start with the biggest object (a wallet or a water bottle) drawn small in fineliner, then work outward to keys, lipstick, a crumpled receipt, leaving each item its own patch of space so the page does not turn into a pile.

Draw the outlines first for everything before you add a single detail, so no one object eats the time meant for the rest. A light wash of watercolor on two or three items, not all of them, keeps the page feeling sketchy rather than labored.

If the bag is mostly black and boring, pull out the contents of a coat pocket instead for more color and shape variety. The usual mistake is making the first object too large and running out of room: sketch a rough grid of light pencil dots first to space everything evenly.

Keep one pen moving loosely rather than stopping to perfect each zipper or clasp.

Open the fridge and draw it exactly as it sits, shelf by shelf, top to bottom, the way you’d read a page of text. Lightly pencil in three or four horizontal lines first to mark each shelf, then fill each strip with its jars, cartons and leftover containers drawn in fineliner.

Work left to right within each shelf so nothing gets left out or doubled up. Jars are the easiest shape to start with: a rectangle with rounded corners and a lid line, which makes a good warm-up before you tackle anything curvier like a milk bottle or a bag of greens.

Watercolor is where this page gets its personality, so wash in the labels loosely rather than tracing every word. If the fridge looks half empty today, draw the door shelves instead, since condiment bottles in a row make for a livelier, more colorful line of subjects.

Leave white gaps between shelves so the drawing reads clearly from a glance.

Line up every mug you actually drink from and draw each one the same height on the page, even though they are all different sizes in real life. That one trick, keeping them visually level despite their real proportions, is what makes a mug page look like a tidy collection rather than a messy jumble.

Draw the handle last on each mug, after the body and rim, since handles are where proportions go wrong if you rush them. Sketch the ellipse of the rim first, lightly, to get the tilt right before committing in fineliner.

A short wash of color inside the mug shape, leaving the rim white, reads instantly as ceramic catching the light. If your mugs are mostly plain white, borrow a patterned one from a cupboard you rarely use for a bit of visual contrast on the page.

Keep the spacing even by pencilling a loose row of circles before you start on any single mug.

Palette: Cerulean Blue,Terracotta,Payne’s Grey

Try drawing one mug from straight above too, just the rim and handle as a flat shape, to break up a page of side views.

Shoes lined up at the door are an easy page because they already come arranged for you. Draw the sole line of each pair first, a simple curved base, then build the shoe shape upward from that line so every pair sits convincingly on the ground instead of floating.

Work from the pair nearest you outward, since the ones up close need the most careful attention and the back ones can get looser and smaller, which also gives the page a sense of depth. Laces and seams are the detail that trips people up: draw them last, lightly, after the whole shoe shape is already settled.

A quick watercolor shadow pooled under each pair, rather than color on the shoes themselves, does more to ground the page than careful shading ever will. No front door pile at hand? Draw the shoe rack in a hallway closet instead.

Keep every pair touching the same horizontal baseline so the row reads as one floor.

Houseplants on a sill give you a built in eye level to work with, since you are almost certainly looking slightly up at the leaves and slightly down at the pots. Let that tilt show: draw the pot rims as narrow ellipses rather than straight lines, and the leaves fanning upward toward the light source coming through the glass.

Start each plant with its pot, a simple trapezoid, then build the leaves in loose clusters rather than counting every single one. Overlap a few leaves in front of others to suggest the fullness of the plant without drawing each blade separately.

Watercolor the leaves in two or three greens rather than one flat shade, since real leaves rarely match each other exactly. If your sill is bare right now, sketch a single plant from across the room instead, which is good practice for the kind of layered foliage found in this flower sketchbook ideas collection.

Let the light edge of each leaf stay unpainted for a quick, believable glow.

Draw breakfast before you eat it, which forces you to work fast and loose rather than fussing. Start with the plate as a simple circle or oval, then place the food on top the way it actually sits, toast overlapping the egg, berries pooled to one side, rather than spacing everything out evenly like a diagram.

Ten minutes is enough for the full outline and one wash of color over the warmest item on the plate, usually the yolk or the jam. Forty minutes lets you add the steam curling off a coffee cup beside it and the texture of the toast crust in short broken fineliner strokes.

The plate rim is where proportions slip, since an oval drawn too round makes the whole page look tilted: glance at the actual angle between the near and far edge of the rim before committing to the ellipse.

If breakfast is already gone, draw last night’s dinner plate from memory instead, it works just as well.

Palette: Lemon Yellow,Warm Brown,Cadmium Red

Climb onto a chair, or just hold the sketchbook up and look down, and draw your desk as a flat bird’s eye arrangement of shapes rather than objects standing up. This angle flattens everything into simple outlines, a laptop becomes a rectangle, a mug becomes a ring, which makes clutter surprisingly fast to draw.

Start with the largest flat object, usually the laptop or a notebook, as an anchor shape, then build outward adding pens, cables and sticky notes around it. Keep every shape touching or slightly overlapping its neighbor, since objects viewed from directly above rarely have gaps between them on a cluttered desk.

Cables are the one thing that goes wrong here: draw them last, as single loose curved lines laid over the top of everything else, never as the first mark. A thin watercolor wash on just the laptop screen and one bright object keeps the rest of the clutter feeling like line work.

Shift your own chair back slightly if the angle feels too steep to draw comfortably.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Cerulean Blue,Soft Grey

Snack packaging is some of the most satisfying stuff to draw because the shapes are already graphic: boxes, bags with a crinkled top, the cylinder of a crisp tube. Draw each package as its basic geometric shape first, box, bag or tube, before adding any logo or text.

Group the snacks loosely by shape rather than by brand, so all the boxes sit together and all the bags sit together, which naturally organizes the page without any planning. Crinkled bag tops are the trickiest part: draw them as a few zigzag folds rather than trying to capture every crease.

A quick colored wash over the packaging, kept brighter and flatter than you’d use for food itself, matches the plastic sheen of real snack wrappers. No real cupboard handy? Sketch the snack aisle from a grocery receipt memory or a lunchbox instead.

Letter the logos as simple blocky shapes rather than readable text, which keeps the drawing quick and still recognizable.

Palette: Cadmium Red,Lemon Yellow,Cerulean Blue

Pick your window view and split the page into three small rectangles side by side, like a strip of postcards, rather than one large scene. This matters for perspective: each frame can show a different distance, a close rooftop, a mid-distance street, a far horizon, so the eye naturally reads depth across the page even though each frame is tiny.

Draw the horizon line first in all three frames at roughly the same height, which keeps them feeling like one continuous view rather than three unrelated drawings. Work from back to front in each frame, sky and distant shapes first, then the nearer rooftops or trees layered on top.

Keep the detail sparse, a row of windows as dashes, a tree as a loose scribbled mass, since three small frames do not have room for fuss. If the view outside is plain, split the frames by time of day instead, morning, midday, evening light from the same spot.

A thin wash of sky color unifies the three frames even when the ground details differ.

Palette: Cerulean Blue,Soft Grey,Sap Green

This pairs well with the quiet city scenes gathered in this sketchbook ideas list if the window view feels thin on its own.

A sleeping cat barely moves, which makes it the easiest animal on the page to study closely. Draw the overall curled or stretched silhouette first in one loose fineliner line, then place the ears and tail as small shapes tucked into that outline rather than drawn separately and attached later.

Watch how the body reads as one soft continuous curve when curled, versus a long flattened oval when stretched out, and copy that single big shape before worrying about fur or face. If the cat shifts position, simply start a new small drawing beside the last one, which is exactly how this page is meant to fill up, several poses rather than one finished portrait.

Fur texture comes from a few short flicked fineliner strokes along the edge of the body, not an even outline all the way round. No cat at hand? A dog curled on a cushion works just as well, and this sits nicely alongside the gentler animal studies in cute animal drawing ideas.

Keep a soft grey or warm beige wash loose over the body rather than filling in every marking.

Palette: Warm Grey,Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey

Empty the fruit bowl onto the table and draw each piece close to its true size next to the others, an apple noticeably bigger than a lime, a banana long beside a round orange. That size comparison is what keeps a fruit page looking believable rather than like a set of random circles.

Start each fruit with its basic round or oval shape, then nudge the outline until it matches the real one, a slight dent at the apple’s top, the tapered end of the banana. Stems and leaves go on last, as small single marks, once the main shape already reads clearly as that fruit.

Watercolor is where fruit comes alive: drop a slightly darker wash of the same color onto the shaded side while the first wash is still damp, so the two blend into a soft gradient without hard edges. Keep one fruit half peeled or half cut for variety, and if the bowl is empty, this pairs well with the step by step approach in easy watercolor fruit paintings.

Leave a small white highlight unpainted on the roundest part of each fruit.

Palette: Cadmium Red,Lemon Yellow,Sap Green,Tangerine Orange

Tip out a sewing tin and you get a page of small, satisfying, oddly shaped objects: a tangle of thread spools, scattered buttons, a pin cushion bristling with pins. Draw the spools first since their cylinder shape is the simplest, then move to the rounder buttons and finally the fiddly pins and needles, saving the hardest details for last.

Buttons are easier than they look if you draw the outer circle first, then the small holes as a tiny evenly spaced cluster rather than trying to place each one perfectly. A kneaded eraser is handy here: press it onto a pencil sketch of the pin cushion to lift soft highlights before you ever pick up the fineliner, so the bristling pins read as catching light.

Thread spools benefit from a loose wash of color left unpainted in a thin ring where the thread winds, which reads instantly as thread without drawing every wrap. No sewing kit around? A desk drawer of paperclips and rubber bands gives the same small-object charm.

Group similar objects together rather than scattering them evenly across the page.

You Will Need

• kneaded eraser

Palette: Cadmium Red,Cerulean Blue,Soft Grey

Seashells reward a slow look because no two are quite symmetrical, which is actually good news: you do not need perfect measuring, just an honest copy of the one lopsided curl or chip in front of you. Draw the outer silhouette first in one continuous line, then add the ridges or spiral lines following the direction the shell actually grows.

Spiral shells are the one shape worth a measuring glance: compare the shell’s height to its width before you draw the outline, since spirals drawn too narrow end up looking like a party hat instead of a shell. Flatter shells and fragments are easier and make good filler between the bigger ones on the page.

Watercolor goes on in a single warm wash first, then a slightly deeper tone dropped into the grooves while still damp, which is how shells get their soft banded coloring without hard painted lines. No shells on hand? A handful of pebbles works the same way and gives a similarly satisfying page.

Vary the shell sizes across the page so it does not read as one repeated stamp.

Palette: Sandy Beige,Terracotta,Soft Pink

A bakery case is basically a grid already, so let the glass shelves in real life become your page layout: a loose horizontal line for each shelf, croissants and tarts drawn sitting along it just as they would behind the glass. Start with the rounder pastries, a muffin or a bun, since their shape is the most forgiving before you try a layered croissant.

Light matters here, since cafe cases are usually lit from above or behind glass, which throws a shine across the top of each pastry: leave a thin unpainted highlight along the top curve of each one before washing in the color, and that single gap is what makes it look glazed.

Croissant layers are drawn as a few curved overlapping lines rather than many thin ones, since too much detail flattens the shape instead of making it look flaky. If a real cafe case is not nearby, sketch from a bakery bag of pastries at home instead, and this pairs naturally with the warm interiors found in kitchen watercolor art.

Keep the glass shelf lines faint so the pastries stay the main event.

Palette: Warm Brown,Lemon Yellow,Cadmium Red

Bottles and jars on a bathroom shelf are a lesson in simple cylinders and tapered shapes, so line a few up and draw the straight sides of each one with a ruler’s worth of care even if you are working freehand, since a wobbly bottle outline is the fastest way to ruin the page.

Draw the cap or lid first as a small rectangle sitting on top, then run two mostly parallel lines down for the body before closing the base, which keeps the bottle looking upright rather than leaning. Labels are drawn as simple rectangles with a scribble standing in for text, never fully lettered out.

A dry brush loaded with very little water and dragged once down the side of a bottle shape gives a quick streaky highlight that reads as glass or plastic catching light. No bathroom shelf handy? A row of kitchen spice jars gives the same cylinder practice, and either page pairs well with the glassware moments in blue and white painting.

Vary the bottle heights across the row so the page does not look like a printed chart.

Palette: Cerulean Blue,Soft Pink,Soft Grey

Press a handful of leaves flat under a book for a few minutes before you draw them, since a slightly flattened leaf is far easier to copy than one still curling at the edges. Draw the central vein first as a single light pencil line, then build the leaf’s outline working outward from that spine on both sides so the two halves stay roughly balanced.

Compare one leaf’s length to its width before you commit to the outline in fineliner, since leaves drawn too narrow end up looking like blades of grass instead of their actual shape. Smaller side veins branch off the center line at a consistent gentle angle, which is the detail that makes a leaf read as botanical rather than generic.

Watercolor each leaf in two tones, the main green and a warmer edge where autumn color or sun damage shows, blended while damp. No leaves at hand? A few herb sprigs from the kitchen windowsill work the same way, and this pairs naturally with the walk-based pages in autumn sketchbook ideas.

Vary the leaf shapes across the page rather than drawing the same species five times.

Palette: Sap Green,Burnt Sienna,Olive Green

Hold a different small object in your free hand and sketch the two together, which turns a hand study, usually the hardest thing to draw, into something easier because the object gives the fingers a clear job to do. Draw the palm and the general shape of the fist or grip first as one simple block, then add individual fingers curling around whatever you are holding.

Knuckles are where the eye goes wrong if you guess, so glance down at your own hand mid-pose and note where each knuckle bends before drawing the finger segments between them. Swap the object every few minutes, a pencil, a teacup, an apple, a phone, so the page fills with several small studies rather than one labored attempt.

A light wash of warm skin tone with a slightly deeper shade in the creases between fingers sells the roundness fast without heavy shading. If holding a sketchbook and a pencil at once feels awkward, prop your hand on the table in a fixed pose instead and draw from there.

Keep each hand sketch small so an imperfect one does not feel like wasted page space.

Palette: Warm Beige,Burnt Sienna,Soft Grey

A coat rack gives you a ready made eye level problem worth noticing: the hooks are usually above your eye line, which means the hats and scarves hanging from them droop and overlap in ways that look different from a hat sitting flat on a table. Draw the hook or rack first as a simple vertical line, then let each item hang from it with gravity pulling the fabric down and slightly forward.

Hats go on first since their shape is more rigid, a dome or a brim, then scarves drape over or beside them as loose wavy lines rather than straight hanging strips. Overlap two or three items on the same hook, since that layering is exactly what a real coat rack looks like at the end of a day.

Watercolor the scarf’s pattern as a few repeated simple marks, stripes or dots, rather than copying every thread. No coat rack handy? A row of hats on a shelf works the same way.

Let the fabric edges stay a little uneven in the fineliner rather than drawing them perfectly straight.

Palette: Terracotta,Payne’s Grey,Mustard Yellow

Tea tins are some of the most graphic objects in the whole kitchen, since so many brands print bold patterns and lettering straight onto a simple cylinder. Draw the tin’s outline first, a straight sided rectangle with slightly rounded top corners, then block in the pattern as big simple shapes, a stripe, a flower, a block of color, rather than trying to copy the full label design.

Line several tins up at slightly different heights, since real pantry shelves rarely have everything the same size, and that variation alone makes the page feel like a genuine shelf rather than a diagram. Lids get a single curved line across the top to suggest the rim without overworking it.

A flat watercolor wash with almost no shading matches the printed, flat look of tin packaging better than a blended gradient would. No tea tins at hand? Spice tins or canned goods give the same bold-label practice.

Keep the lettering on each label as a loose scribbled line rather than readable words.

Palette: Cadmium Red,Sap Green,Mustard Yellow

A bedside table at the end of the day is a small, honest still life: a lamp, a glass of water, a book left open, a phone face down. Draw the lamp first since its shape anchors the whole page, a simple cone or dome on a thin stem, then work outward to the flatter objects around its base.

Ten minutes gets you the outlines of everything and a single wash of warm lamplight color spreading loosely from the bulb. Forty minutes lets you add the soft shadow each object casts away from that light, which is what actually makes the lamp look lit rather than just present.

An open book is easier than it looks if you draw the two page shapes as a wide shallow V first, then add a few loose lines for text rather than real words. No lamp on the table tonight? Draw it by the glow of a phone screen instead, which gives a cooler light to work with.

Keep the warm wash concentrated near the lamp and let it fade toward the edges of the page.

Palette: Mustard Yellow,Warm Brown,Payne’s Grey

A drying rack gives you plates leaning at an angle, which is good perspective practice: a plate standing upright in a rack shows as a tall narrow ellipse rather than the wide round shape it has lying flat on a table, so look at the actual tilt before drawing the rim.

Draw the rack’s wire frame first as a few simple straight lines, then slot the plates and bowls into the gaps between them, letting each dish overlap its neighbor slightly the way they really stack while draining. Cups go upside down in their usual spot, drawn as a simple dome shape with the handle sticking out to one side.

A light grey watercolor wash on the wire rack keeps it from competing with the dishes for attention. If there is no drying rack to hand, a stack of plates in a cupboard gives similar tilted ellipse practice.

Leave small white gaps where water would still be catching the light on wet ceramic.

Palette: Soft Grey,Cerulean Blue,Soft Pink

Spice jars reward a close, quiet look because the real subject is the spice itself: the flecked texture of dried herbs, the fine grains of paprika, the whole dark pods of star anise. Draw the jar outline first, a simple small cylinder, then leave the inside blank until the fineliner work is done.

For texture, load the brush with very little water and drag it quickly across the jar’s interior in short strokes, a dry brush trick that leaves broken, grainy marks instead of a flat wash, which is exactly how ground spice should look on paper. Whole spices like cinnamon sticks or star anise get a few careful individual outlines instead, since they read better as distinct shapes than as texture.

Line up four or five jars at the same height for a tidy, orderly page, or scatter them if you want a looser feel. No spice rack handy? A row of baking ingredients in bags works just as well.

Let the dry brush texture stay a little uneven, that roughness is what sells it.

You Will Need

• dry brush for texture

Palette: Cadmium Red,Burnt Sienna,Mustard Yellow

Nothing is more convenient to draw than the mess already on your table while you work, so pause and sketch the pencils, brushes and paint tubes exactly where they lie. Draw the longest objects first, pencils and brushes, as simple straight lines with a point or ferrule at one end, since their angles set up the rhythm of the whole page.

Paint tubes are trickier little shapes: draw the cylinder body first, then squash the cap end down into its characteristic folded crimp, which is the detail that makes a tube read as a tube rather than a bottle. Overlap a few pencils crossing each other, since parallel rows look stiff compared to the real scatter on a desk.

A dab of actual leftover paint on your palette, used straight on the page, is the fastest way to color the paint tubes convincingly. If your table is suspiciously tidy, borrow supplies from a drawer instead, and the drawing techniques encyclopedia is worth a look for other mark-making ideas to try on this page.

Keep the composition loose and overlapping rather than neatly spaced.

Palette: Cadmium Red,Cerulean Blue,Payne’s Grey

Lay today’s outfit flat on the bed, piece by piece, the way you would before getting dressed, and draw it from directly above rather than on a body. This flat lay view removes all the tricky folds a worn garment would have and leaves you with simpler, flatter shapes to copy.

Start with the largest piece, usually a top or dress, drawn as a simple rounded rectangle with sleeve shapes attached, then add smaller pieces, trousers, socks, a belt, arranged around it the way they actually landed. Buttons, seams and pockets go on last as small single marks once the main shapes are settled.

Fabric pattern, a stripe or a print, is quicker to suggest with a few repeated watercolor marks than to paint in full detail, and this looser approach to clothing and pattern also shows up well in colorful sketchbook ideas. If today’s outfit is plain, lay out tomorrow’s planned outfit instead for more color to work with.

Leave a little white space between each garment so the shapes stay readable.

Palette: Dusty Rose,Cerulean Blue,Mustard Yellow

Gather a handful of pebbles from outside and tip them onto the page in front of you, since their real charm is how different each one is from the next despite being the same basic rounded shape. Draw each pebble’s outline as a slightly irregular oval, never a perfect circle, which is the small honesty that makes a pile of stones look real.

Shade the rounded side of each pebble with a single soft pencil stroke before inking, which helps you see where the form actually turns before you commit to fineliner lines. Scatter a few small cracks or speckles across two or three pebbles rather than every single one, since too much texture everywhere flattens the variety.

A thin grey or warm beige watercolor wash, left patchy rather than even, matches the natural mottling of real stone. No garden path handy? A handful of gravel from a potted plant works the same way, and smooth round pebbles are good preparation for the layered shell textures in seashell pages.

Group the pebbles in a loose pile rather than a tidy row for a more natural look.

Palette: Soft Grey,Sandy Beige,Payne’s Grey

Unpack the market bag onto the table and draw the vegetables in the order you lift them out, which naturally gives the page a loose, unplanned arrangement rather than a stiff grid. Start with the roundest vegetables, an onion or a tomato, since their simple curved shape warms up your hand before tackling something knobbly like ginger or a carrot with its leafy top still attached.

Carrot and other root vegetable tops are where the real character lives: draw the leafy fronds as a loose scribble of short curved lines rather than individual leaves, which reads as foliage without eating up your time. Compare a carrot’s length to an onion’s width before drawing either, since root vegetables drawn too short lose their characteristic taper.

Watercolor each vegetable in its true color first, then drop a touch of brown or green into the shadow side while the paint is still wet for a soft gradient. No fresh vegetables around? A bag of root vegetables from the pantry works just as well, and this pairs naturally with the produce studies in fruit drawing pencil sketches.

Let a little soil or dirt texture stay rough and unwashed near the roots for authenticity.

Palette: Tangerine Orange,Sap Green,Burnt Sienna

A pet’s toy basket is full of oddly satisfying shapes to draw: a chewed rope, a squeaky ball, a stuffed animal flattened from love. Draw the simplest round shapes first, balls and the rounder chew toys, then move on to the rope toy, which is best drawn as a few twisting overlapping lines rather than one solid shape.

A stuffed toy’s floppy, worn look comes from drawing the outline slightly lumpy and uneven rather than symmetrical, since years of chewing and washing never leave anything perfectly shaped. Scatter the toys loosely across the page the way they actually sit in a basket, overlapping rather than lined up in a tidy row.

A soft faded watercolor wash, slightly patchy, suits a well loved toy better than a bright even color would. No pet toys at hand? A child’s small toy basket gives the same cheerful jumble of shapes to draw, and this pairs well with the playful subjects in cute sketchbook ideas.

Keep the colors a touch muted rather than fresh out of the packet, it suits the worn look better.

Palette: Dusty Rose,Mustard Yellow,Soft Grey

Cut a few stems from the garden and split them between several small jars rather than one big vase, since that is exactly the kind of page that fills up fast: many small drawings instead of one large bouquet. Draw each jar first as a simple narrow cylinder, then let the stems rise out of it at slightly different angles so the jars do not look identical.

Flower heads are easier if you draw the basic round or star shaped outline first and only add individual petals once that outline feels balanced, glancing at the real flower to check how many petal clusters actually show rather than guessing a number. Leaves attach lower down the stem, drawn as a few simple pointed shapes rather than crowding the whole stem with foliage.

A wet in wet watercolor technique, dropping a second color into a still damp flower head, gives that soft blurred look real petals often have. No cut flowers to hand? A single leafy branch in a jar works just as well, and this pairs nicely with the botanical approach in flower sketchbook ideas.

Keep each jar small on the page so several fit comfortably without crowding.

Palette: Rose Pink,Sap Green,Cerulean Blue

A trinket dish is full of small, shiny, fiddly things, which makes it a good test of patience and a good page to work slowly on. Draw the larger pieces first, a bracelet or a chunky ring, as simple rounded shapes, then add the finer chains and earrings last, since thin lines drawn too early get lost under everything else.

Chains are easier than they look if you draw a loose wavy line first for the overall path, then add small linked ovals along it rather than trying to draw every link from the start. A white gel pen is worth having for this page specifically: a single dot or short line of gel pen over dry watercolor instantly reads as the sparkle of metal or a gemstone catching light.

Keep the watercolor washes thin and pale for gold or silver pieces, since metal reflects more than it holds color. No real jewelry handy? A dish of buttons or coins gives similar small, round shapes to practice on.

Save the gel pen highlights for the very end, after everything else is fully dry.

You Will Need

• white gel pen

Palette: Mustard Yellow,Soft Grey,Dusty Rose

Set one sneaker on the table and walk around it, drawing it from five different angles: straight on, from the side, from above, from behind, and at a three quarter turn. This single object study is a genuinely useful perspective exercise, since a shoe’s curves shift noticeably depending on where you stand, and seeing all five on one page teaches that faster than any single drawing could.

Draw the sole as the base line in every single view first, since the sole’s shape and angle is what anchors the whole sneaker to the ground on paper. The side view is the easiest to start with, then work toward the trickier straight-on and from-behind views where the foreshortening gets more noticeable.

Keep the same simple color scheme across all five drawings so the page reads as one sneaker studied thoroughly rather than five different shoes. No sneaker handy? A single mug or teapot works for the same five-angle exercise.

Leave laces for the last pass across all five sketches, once every sole and body shape already sits correctly.

Palette: Cerulean Blue,Cadmium Red,Soft Grey

Dried pasta from the pantry is an underrated subject because the shapes are so varied and so forgiving: a twist, a tube, a little bow, a shell. Draw the simplest shapes first, penne and rigatoni as plain tubes with a diagonal cut end, before attempting the trickier spirals of fusilli or the pinched folds of a farfalle bow.

Scatter a small handful of each shape across the page rather than drawing one giant pile, since separated small groups are easier to keep readable and let you show several pasta types on one page. A single ridge line or two along the tube shapes is enough to suggest the grooved texture real pasta has, no need to draw every ridge.

A pale wash of warm wheat yellow, almost translucent, over each piece keeps the page feeling light rather than heavy, since dried pasta is a pale, matte color in real life. No pasta on the shelf? Dried beans or lentils in jars give a similarly varied, quick-to-draw pantry page.

Keep the color wash thin enough that the fineliner lines still show clearly through it.

Palette: Mustard Yellow,Burnt Sienna,Soft Grey

A diner table condiment tray is a small, cheerful still life that is basically waiting for you between courses: ketchup and mustard bottles, a sugar caddy, little packets stacked in a holder. Draw the bottles first as simple tapered shapes, narrower at the cap and wider at the base, since that taper is what separates a condiment bottle from a plain cylinder jar.

Compare the ketchup bottle’s height to the mustard bottle’s height before drawing either, since the two are usually sold in a matching pair and that size relationship is part of what makes the page instantly recognizable. Sugar packets in a caddy are drawn as a loose stack of small overlapping rectangles rather than counted out individually.

A flat, bright wash of red and yellow on the bottle labels, left unshaded, matches the glossy printed look of real condiment packaging. No diner table nearby? A home kitchen’s own ketchup and mustard bottles work exactly the same way.

Keep the metal caps a cool grey rather than warm, which makes them read as metal against the warm bottle colors.

Palette: Cadmium Red,Lemon Yellow,Soft Grey

Candles lined up on a mantel give you a chance to play with a single light source, since the flame itself is the brightest point on the whole page and everything else should read a touch darker in comparison. Draw each candle body first as a simple straight sided cylinder, varying the heights since mismatched candle heights are what real mantels usually look like.

Leave the flame shape itself as bare white paper, never painted, and build a thin ring of warm yellow and orange watercolor around it instead, since an unpainted flame against color is what actually makes it glow on the page. The wax drips down the side of a candle are a nice touch, drawn as a few uneven vertical lines trailing from just under the flame.

A soft grey wash pooled faintly around the base of each candle grounds them on the mantel surface. No real candles burning? Unlit candles still work fine, just draw the wick alone without the glow.

Keep the warm glow wash loose and soft edged rather than a hard painted circle.

Palette: Lemon Yellow,Tangerine Orange,Soft Grey

This warm, glowing approach to candlelight also suits the cozy interiors in watercolor cottagecore paintings if you want to try it on a larger scene.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever page matches what is actually in front of you right now, the shoes by the door or the mugs in the cupboard, and open your sketchbook to a fresh page of cream paper. Start with a fineliner and a light pencil grid, keep the first marks loose, and let the page fill itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sketchbook filler exactly?

A sketchbook filler is a quick page you draw from ordinary things around you, like a fridge shelf or a handbag, instead of a planned composition, finished in one sitting with no reference photo needed.

Do I need watercolor to do these sketchbook fillers?

No, fineliner alone works fine for every page here. Watercolor adds quick color and mood, but a black and white fineliner version of any idea still fills the page and still counts.

How do I stop a sketchbook filler page looking messy?

Lightly pencil a loose grid of dots before you start, spacing where each object will sit, then draw within those gaps so even a busy page of many small items stays visually organized.

What paper works best for these pencil and watercolor sketchbook pages?

A sketchbook with cream toned mixed media or watercolor paper, around 140 pound weight, holds up to light washes without buckling and gives fineliner ink a smooth surface to sit on.

How long should one sketchbook filler page take?

Most of these pages take between ten and forty minutes depending on how much detail and watercolor you add, which makes them ideal for a single coffee break or lunch hour.
