House doodles are the small drawings that make a notebook feel like home: a crooked little roof, a door with a round window, a chimney puffing a curl of smoke. There is no pressure to get the perspective right or the proportions textbook-perfect, which is exactly why they are so satisfying to fill a page with on a lunch break or a slow evening.
Below are 27 of them, from the plainest cottage shape to the fussier tower and canal house, so you can warm up on the easy ones and work up to the more detailed scenes. Grab a black fineliner and a terracotta and sage marker or two, and pick whichever one is calling to you.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start with the easiest roofline in the whole list: a soft, lumpy dome shape sitting on a square body, the kind of thatch that looks like it was piled on by hand. Draw the roof first in one continuous wavy line, then the walls underneath, then a door and two small windows.
Where this goes wrong is the thatch looking too neat. Keep the top edge bumpy and uneven, and add short diagonal dashes along the lower edge instead of a clean line, since real thatch is shaggy, not smooth.
Add a climbing rose up one wall with small loops of ink for leaves and a few round blooms, then touch the roof with sage marker and the door and flowers with terracotta. If you only have one marker colour, use it for the roses alone and leave the thatch plain ink.
Keep a fine brush pen nearby so the first rose you draw can stay loose rather than overworked.

Once a single cottage feels easy, try a row of townhouses side by side, the kind you see lined up on a city street. Draw a simple baseline first, a straight pencil line if you want one, then stack three or four narrow rectangles of slightly different heights along it.
Compare each house to its neighbour before you commit to a roof: eyeballing them one at a time is what makes a row go lopsided, so glance sideways as you draw each wall to keep the widths roughly even even though the heights vary.
Give each house its own simple roof shape, a scatter of small windows, and one bold front door. Colour alternating houses in terracotta and sage so the row reads as a pattern rather than one block of ink.
If marker feels risky across several houses at once, test the colour on a scrap corner first to check it will not bleed through thin paper.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Soft Cream
Add a lamppost or a bicycle leaning against one house to give the row a sense of a real street without adding another building.
Move from street level up into the branches with a treehouse perched in a simple tree trunk. Draw the trunk first as two slightly curved lines that lean a little, then rough in two or three sturdy branches before you add the house itself.
Sit the treehouse at eye level with the thickest branch so it looks properly supported rather than floating: this is the detail that makes or breaks the whole drawing, since a treehouse balanced on a thin twig never reads as sturdy.
Add a rope or wooden ladder hanging down from the doorway in a loose zigzag, a round window, and a flag on a stick at the roof peak. Keep the leaves as simple scribbled loops rather than individual shapes.
Shade the trunk and branches lightly in terracotta and the leaf clusters in sage, leaving the house itself mostly white ink linework.

Pair a tiny cottage with a striped lighthouse tower for a scene with a bit more story in it. Draw the cottage first, low and squat with a single chimney, then set the lighthouse beside it as a tall narrow cylinder that tapers slightly toward the lamp room at top.
Place the sun or lamp light low on one side of the lighthouse and let every shadow fall away from it on the same side: this one choice of light direction is what pulls the whole doodle together instead of looking flat.
Add horizontal stripe bands around the tower in terracotta, alternating with plain white, and a scribble of sage for a patch of grass or a low hedge beside the cottage door.
If stripes feel fiddly with marker, draw them in fineliner instead and only colour the lamp room glow and the grass.

Give a little house somewhere to go by setting it on a trailer with two round wheels underneath. Start with the wheels as simple circles resting on a ground line, then build the trailer platform above them, then the house box on top with a sloped roof.
For the quick ten minute version, keep it to the box, roof, one window and the wheels, done in fineliner with a single marker accent on the door. For a longer sitting, add a small chimney with a curl of smoke, a window box of flowers, and a hitch bar trailing off one end as if ready to be towed.
Keep the roof overhang slightly wider than the walls so the house looks sheltered rather than boxy.
Colour the wheels and door terracotta and the window box sage, leaving the main walls as plain white paper with ink outline.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Ink Black
Widen the scene into a small farmhouse and barn standing together. Draw the farmhouse first, a plain rectangle with a centred gable roof and a porch, then set the barn slightly behind or beside it with its taller, steeper roofline so the two buildings read as different ages and uses.
Next to each wall, hold your pen at arm’s length and compare the barn’s height against the farmhouse roofline before you commit to ink: a barn drawn too small loses the working farm feel the whole doodle is going for.
Add a simple fence line running along the ground and a few dots or loops for distant trees. The barn gets the boldest terracotta fill since that is the colour real barns borrow, while the farmhouse stays mostly white with sage for a hedge or a patch of grass.
Skip the fence entirely if you are short on time, since the two buildings alone already tell the story.

Bring in a seaside mood with a single beach hut standing on short stilts above the sand. Draw the box shape first, then the stilts as four short legs, then a peaked or flat roof depending on how fussy you want to get.
For stripes that stay crisp, draw the hut outline in fineliner first and let the ink dry fully before adding marker, then use the pen’s own straight edge as a guide rather than trying to draw freehand lines across wet colour.
Stripe the walls in alternating terracotta and white, add a small round window, and a short set of steps leading up to the door. A scribble of sage grass tufts around the base finishes it without needing any sand or sea drawn in at all.
If stilts feel tricky, sit the hut straight on a simple ground line instead and it will look just as charming.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Ink Black
Swap a roof for a mushroom cap and the whole drawing turns whimsical in one step. Draw the stem first as a slightly tapered cylinder, wider at the base, then cap it with a dome that overhangs the stem on every side like a real mushroom cap would.
Keep the ten minute version to the stem, cap, round door and one window dot. Given forty minutes, add texture speckles across the cap, a tiny ladder or spiral stair leading up, and a cluster of smaller mushrooms growing at the base for scale.
The round door is the detail worth getting right: draw it as a true circle rather than an arch, with a small circle doorknob, since that is what reads as a fairy tale house rather than a toadstool with a dent in it.
Fill the cap in terracotta with sage speckles, or flip the colours if you want a greener cap.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Ink Black
Step into a tighter, taller shape with a narrow canal house, the kind that lines the waterways with a stepped or pointed gable top. Draw the narrow rectangle body first, then build the gable as a stair-step or triangular point above the roofline, which is the detail that makes it instantly readable as Dutch.
Line up the windows in a neat vertical row, largest at the bottom floor and slightly smaller as they rise, and add a small hoist beam poking out near the top gable, a detail real canal houses use for lifting furniture through upper windows.
Keep the walls narrow, taller than they are wide, since a canal house drawn too squat loses its character entirely.
Colour the gable trim and window frames terracotta, with a sage shutter or two, and leave the brick walls as plain cross-hatched ink.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Ink Black
Bring in a quieter mood with a log cabin half buried in snow. Draw the cabin body first with horizontal lines across the walls to suggest stacked logs, then pile soft humps of white space along the roofline and windowsills where snow has settled.
Lift a little ink with a damp cotton swab or a kneaded eraser along the snow edges once the pen has dried, which softens the hard line between roof and snow and gives it a gentler, drifted look instead of a crisp cut-out shape.
Add a single chimney with a loose curling line of smoke rising, and a small path of footprint dots leading to the door. Terracotta warms the door and window glow against all that white, while sage can sit in for a pine branch leaning against one wall.
Leave the sky untouched by marker so the white paper itself does the work of the snow.
You Will Need
- kneaded eraser or cotton swab for lifting ink

For more cosy winter scenes to doodle alongside this one, a set of winter doodle ideas makes a good companion page.
Set a house afloat with a flat-bottomed houseboat and a cat sunning itself on top. Draw the hull first as a long low curve resting on a wavy water line, then the cabin as a simple box sitting on the hull, then the cat last as a small loaf shape with ears and a curled tail.
Keep the cat’s silhouette simple: a rounded triangle body, two pointed ear triangles, no need for legs or a detailed face, since a few confident shapes read as a cat far better than an overworked one does.
Add a row of potted plants along the deck and a couple of portholes down the hull side. Water gets a few loose wavy lines in sage, while the cabin roof and door take the terracotta.
If a full cat feels like too much, a simple curled tail shape peeking over the roofline suggests one just as well.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Ink Black
Take on a taller, fussier house now that the simpler shapes feel comfortable. Draw the main box first, then stack a second smaller box on top for an upper floor, then finish with a steep pointed roof and a round turret on one corner if you are feeling ambitious.
Before adding any trim, pencil in the porch roofline at eye level with the main doorway so the swing hangs at a height that makes sense, two chains dropping from the porch ceiling to a simple bench shape, since a swing drawn too high or low is the detail that gives this house away as off balance.
Add gingerbread trim along the roof edges as small repeated triangles or scallops, and lattice windows with small cross marks. Terracotta suits the trim and door, sage for a climbing vine up one porch post.
Leave the turret for a second attempt if the main house alone already fills the page nicely.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Ink Black
Shift from homes to a small shopfront with a bakery front window full of simple loaf and pastry shapes. Draw the shop box first, then the awning as a scalloped half circle jutting out above the door, then the window beneath it with a counter of goods sketched in loosely.
Keep the bread shapes as simple ovals and the pastries as small swirled circles rather than detailed individual items, since too much detail in a window this small turns into a blur rather than a bakery.
Stripe the awning in alternating terracotta and white, letter a tiny sign above the door if you like lettering, and add a sage wreath or small potted bay tree by the entrance.
If a full shop window feels like too much for one sitting, a bakery door with just the awning and a loaf-shaped sign is plenty.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Warm Yellow
Climb higher again with a single castle tower rather than a whole fortress, which keeps the drawing manageable in one sitting. Draw the cylinder body first, then a cone-shaped roof on top, then a small flag on a stick poking from the very peak.
Line the tower with a row of small rectangular battlements just below the roofline, and a single narrow slit window partway down, keeping both details small and spaced evenly so the tower reads as sturdy stone rather than a birthday hat.
Colour the roof terracotta with the flag in sage, or swap the two, and leave the stone walls as plain ink with light cross-hatching for shadow on one side only.
Add a second, shorter tower beside the first if the page has room, connected by a short wall.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Ink Black
Set a simple log cabin against an open stretch of water this time instead of snow. Draw the cabin first with its stacked horizontal log lines, then a low dock running from the door down to the waterline, then the water itself as a few long calm horizontal strokes.
Place the sun or moon low near the horizon on one side of the cabin and run a soft reflection of it straight down into the water below: this single reflected shape does more to sell the lake than any amount of wave detail would.
Add a canoe pulled up on the dock and a single tall pine beside the cabin. Terracotta warms the cabin door and the sun, sage fills the pine and any reeds along the shore.
Keep the water lines loose and horizontal rather than wavy, since calm lake water reads better as straight strokes.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Warm Yellow
Try a structure made mostly of glass panes rather than solid walls. Draw the greenhouse frame first as a simple peaked box, then divide the walls into a grid of small rectangular panes with a ruler or freehand if you want the loose doodle look.
Fill in just enough plant shapes behind a few of the panes, not all of them, to suggest a greenhouse full of growing things without drawing every leaf: three or four loose plant silhouettes behind the glass is plenty, and it is far easier to save an overcrowded greenhouse by leaving panes empty than by adding more.
Add a simple bench outside the door and a watering can beside it. Sage fills the plant silhouettes and a climbing vine over the roof, while terracotta warms the door frame and the bench.
Swap the grid of panes for a few simple vertical lines if the full grid feels fussy.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Ink Black
Return to the shore for a cottage built entirely in the shape of a large shell, spiral and all. Draw the main spiral first, loose and a little uneven, then build the house details, door, windows, chimney, into the solid curve of the shell itself rather than adding a separate roof.
Keep the spiral’s centre small and let the outer curve widen gradually, the same trick used for drawing any snail or nautilus shell, since a spiral that widens too fast loses the shell look and starts to resemble a cinnamon roll instead.
Scatter a few small shells and a starfish at the base in sage and terracotta, and add short wavy lines nearby to suggest the tideline without drawing a full beach scene.
If the spiral feels tricky freehand, trace a small coin or bottle cap for the centre curve and build outward from there in ink.
You Will Need
- small coin or bottle cap to trace the spiral centre

If beach themes are a favourite, the ocean doodles ideas list has more small coastal subjects in the same spirit.
Give a teapot a front door and a chimney and it becomes one of the most charming houses on this whole list. Draw the teapot body first as a rounded oval, then the spout and handle as two simple curved shapes, then cut a door and two round windows into the body.
Give the roof version ten minutes: teapot, lid as a dome roof, one door. For the forty minute version, add steam curling from the spout as if it is smoke, a tiny window box under each window, and a path of stepping stones leading to the door.
Keep the spout angled slightly upward, since a drooping spout reads as a sad face rather than a cheerful little chimney.
Colour the teapot body sage with terracotta floral details painted on like real teapot china, or flip the two for a warmer palette.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Ink Black
Bring in a wider, lower roofline for a traditional Japanese house with gentle upswept eaves. Draw the roof first as a long shallow curve that lifts slightly at each end, then the low walls beneath it, then a sliding paper door divided into a simple grid.
Hang a single round paper lantern from the eave on one side and let its warm glow fall only on the porch step directly below it, leaving the rest of the house in plain ink: one clear light source here does more than shading the whole scene would.
Add a small maple branch or a single potted bonsai beside the door. Terracotta fills the lantern glow and the door frame, sage takes the maple leaves or bonsai.
Keep the roofline curve smooth and continuous rather than drawn in short segments, since that single sweeping line is what gives the roof its character.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Warm Yellow
Stack a round tower under a set of sails for a windmill with a house built into its base. Draw the tapered round tower first, wider at the bottom than the top, then add a cap roof, then the four sail blades crossed at the centre point near the top.
Space the four sails at even quarter turns around the centre point rather than guessing their angles freehand, since sails bunched to one side are the single most common thing that makes a windmill look broken rather than turning.
Add a door and one small round window low on the tower, and a scribble of sage grass or a single tree at the base. Terracotta suits the cap roof and door, with thin ink lines along the sails to suggest their wooden ribs.
If four full sails feels like a lot of linework, two crossed sails still read clearly as a windmill.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Ink Black
Roll back to ground level with a rounded vintage caravan parked for the season. Draw the body first as a long curved box with a gently domed roof, then the small round porthole windows along the side, then a single door with two steps down.
Give it ten minutes as just the caravan body, porthole, door and wheel. With forty minutes, add a striped awning unrolled from the roof edge, a folding chair beside the door, and flower boxes fixed under each porthole window.
Keep the roof curve continuous in one smooth stroke rather than several short ones, which is what makes a caravan read as rounded metal rather than a boxy trailer.
Terracotta fills the awning stripes and door, sage fills the flower boxes and any bunting strung along the roofline.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Soft Cream
Move to a flat-roofed cube house for a complete change of shape after all the peaked roofs. Draw the simple cube body first, flat across the top, then add an outdoor stair along one side leading up to a small roof terrace, a detail that defines this style more than anything else.
Keep the walls as plain white paper, only outlined in ink, and save every bit of colour for the door, the shutters and a single bougainvillea vine, since the bright white-against-colour contrast is the whole point of this house.
Paint the door and shutters a deep marker blue if you have one, or let terracotta stand in for the door and keep the vine in sage, since both read warmly against plain white walls either way.
Add a potted olive tree by the stairs rather than drawing a full garden.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Soft Cream
Give a cottage a reason to have an especially full front window: shelves of tiny books stacked right up to the glass. Draw the house shape first, simple and squat, then build the shop window as one large rectangle taking up most of the front wall.
Fill the window with rows of small rectangles of varying heights for book spines, keeping each one just a line or two of colour rather than a readable title, since trying to letter every spine is the detail that turns this quick doodle into an hour long one.
Add a hanging shop sign on a bracket above the door and a small stack of books spilling out onto the front step. Terracotta fills alternating book spines and the sign, sage fills a potted plant in the window corner.
A scrap of patterned paper glued behind the window works as a quick stand-in for drawing the shelves by hand.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Ink Black
For a page that pairs well with a cosy reading nook theme, the fall doodles ideas share a similar warm palette.
Take a plain house front and fill each window with its own cat, which turns a simple building into a tiny character study. Draw the house box first with a generous number of windows, at least four or five, since this idea needs room for each cat to have its own spot.
Vary each cat’s pose rather than repeating the same shape in every window, one sitting upright, one curled asleep, one with just two ears and eyes peeking over the sill, so the eye travels around the house instead of landing on a repeated pattern.
Keep every cat a simple two or three shape silhouette, since five detailed cats in one drawing is where this idea usually gets overworked.
Colour the window frames terracotta and the cats themselves in plain ink, saving sage for a single plant pot on one sill.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Ink Black
If you enjoy drawing cats on their own too, the cute cat doodles ideas make a good follow up page.
Scale everything down to a cluster of birdhouses mounted along one tall post or a bare tree branch. Draw the post or branch first, then hang three or four birdhouses of different shapes and sizes along it, a round one, a peaked one, a gourd-shaped one, so the cluster reads as varied rather than repeated.
Overlap the birdhouses slightly so the nearest one sits partly in front of the ones behind it rather than lining them all up in a single flat row, which is what gives the cluster a sense of depth on an otherwise flat page.
Add a bird or two perched on the little roof pegs and a scatter of sage leaves around the post base. Terracotta fills alternating birdhouse roofs, with the walls left in plain ink.
Three birdhouses instead of four keeps this one quick if time is short.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Ink Black
Borrow the shape of a gingerbread house without needing the holiday to draw it: simple walls, a steep roof, and trim piped on in loops and dots like icing. Draw the basic cottage box and roof first, then add the icing trim along every roofline edge as a row of small connected loops.
Draw the icing dots and swirls in a single continuous looping line rather than lifting the pen between each one, since a broken, hesitant icing line is the detail that gives this idea away as careful rather than playful.
Add round candy shapes along the path to the door and a striped candy cane post by the step. Terracotta fills the roof and door, sage stands in for a holly sprig or wreath above the door.
Keep the whole cottage small and square rather than tall, since the gingerbread look reads best as a short stout shape.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Soft Cream
For more ideas in this same holiday mood, the Christmas doodles ideas share the same cosy, looping line style.
Close the list with a single balcony rather than a whole house, which keeps this last idea quick after all the fuller buildings before it. Draw the balcony railing first as a simple horizontal grid of bars, then the wall and sliding door behind it, then a small bistro chair and table on the floor space.
String a loose zigzag line of fairy lights along the top of the railing and dot a small circle at each low point for a bulb, keeping the string looser and lower in the middle than at the ends so it hangs rather than sits stiff and straight.
Add a trailing potted plant spilling over the railing edge in sage, and a terracotta cushion on the chair.
Leave the lights undotted in plain ink if marker feels too heavy for such a small detail, since the zigzag line alone still reads clearly as string lights.
Palette: Terracotta,Sage Green,Warm Yellow
What to Do Next
Pick one house that matches the time you actually have today, a plain cottage if it is a quick break or the birdhouse village if you have a full evening, and start with a light pencil baseline on plain or dot grid paper before the fineliner comes out.
Frequently Asked Questions
What pens work best for house doodles?
A black fineliner in a fine tip, around 0.3 to 0.5, works best for house doodles since it keeps rooflines and windows crisp without smudging. Add colour afterward with alcohol markers once the ink has fully dried.
Do house doodles need to be drawn with a ruler?
No, house doodles look better loose and slightly uneven rather than ruler straight. A few wobbly walls and rooflines give the drawing its charm, so freehand lines are the better choice here.
How do you keep a row of houses from looking lopsided?
Compare each house against its neighbour before inking the roofline, checking the width and height by eye rather than drawing each one in isolation. A faint pencil baseline under the whole row also helps keep everything sitting level.
What is the easiest house doodle to start with?
A simple cottage with a square body and a triangle or domed roof is the easiest starting point. Add a door and one or two windows before moving on to fussier shapes like towers or canal houses.
Can these house doodles be coloured with something other than markers?
Yes, coloured pencils or watercolor work just as well if markers are not on hand. Keep the colour light and limited to two or three accents so the ink linework still leads the drawing.
