A candle doodle is one of the kindest small drawings you can make: a wick, a flame and a little container, done in a few minutes between other things. There is something about drawing light that makes a page feel calmer, and a candle shape forgives wobbly lines better than almost anything else you could sketch.
Below you will find twenty seven candles, cups of tea, cats, moths and melting wax, each one a quick scene rather than a single floating object. Grab a fineliner and a couple of markers and work through them at your own pace, from the simplest flame to the fussier drips and holders near the end.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start with the jar, not the flame, since the whole doodle rests on its shape. Draw a simple rounded rectangle for the glass with the corners softened, then add a short rim line near the top so it reads as glass rather than a box.
Sit the wick in the center as a short wavy line, then draw the flame as a teardrop with two small dot eyes and a tiny curved smile. Colour the flame peach and leave a thin white sliver along one edge so it looks lit rather than flat.
If the jar looks stiff, curve the side lines inward very slightly rather than keeping them dead straight. The usual mistake is making the flame too tall and thin, so keep it short and plump to match the friendly face.
Finish by adding a sage leaf or two tucked against the base of the jar, and you have a cheerful opener for the rest of this list.

Build this one from the bottom up, the way the books actually sit. Draw three or four rectangles stacked with slightly offset edges, varying their thickness so the pile does not look like a single block.
Once the stack feels steady, add a short pillar candle on top with a simple cylinder body and a small flame. Shade the candle body lightly with sage and leave the top book cover peach, so the two colours trade off rather than compete.
The eye level matters here: draw the books from a slightly low angle so you see mostly their front edges and only a sliver of the top covers, which makes the stack feel tall and the candle feel perched rather than floating above it.
If stacking books freehand feels tricky, trace the edge of an actual book or a phone case to keep the rectangles consistent. A short title line or two on the spines finishes the scene without needing any real lettering.
Palette: Sage Green,Peach,Warm Grey
Line up three simple cylinders side by side, then the only real decision is how tall each one gets. Draw the shortest first, then make the second about a third taller and the last one taller again, so the group reads as a deliberate set rather than three random sticks.
Give each candle its own flame size to match its height, tallest candle gets the biggest flame, and colour every flame peach so the row stays unified. Sage works well as a thin base line under all three, like a shelf or windowsill edge.
If this is your first time drawing a group like this, measure the heights against your pen before you commit to ink: hold the pen beside your pencil sketch and check the gaps look even, then go over the keepers in fineliner.
Keep the wicks slightly bent in different directions so the row feels relaxed rather than ruler straight. This is a quick ten minute doodle, and a forty minute version could add drips or a bit of wax pooling at each base.
Palette: Peach,Sage Green,Ink Black
This one is really about the wax, so give the candle itself a simple short body and spend your attention on what happens underneath. Draw the pillar slightly tilted, then let a thin drip run down one side and widen into a small puddle pooling at the base.
Work the puddle with a few uneven wavy lines rather than a perfect circle, since real melted wax never pools evenly. Leave the puddle mostly white with just a thin sage outline, and keep the flame and a stripe of drip in peach so the eye knows where the warmth is coming from.
The usual mistake is making the drip too neat and straight. Add a small bump or curl partway down instead, as if the wax paused before continuing to run.
If you want to push the texture, try a dry brush of sage marker at a shallow angle along the puddle edge to suggest a slight sheen. Let the ink dry fully before adding colour so the drip lines stay crisp.
Palette: Peach,Sage Green,Ink Black
Draw the teacup first since its shape sets the proportions for everything else. Keep it simple, a rounded bowl shape with a small foot and one curved handle, then add a thin ellipse for the rim so the cup reads as open rather than solid.
Tuck a short, stubby candle inside the cup rather than a tall one, since a teacup candle always looks a little squashed in real life. Colour the cup rim and handle in sage and let the small flame carry the peach.
If the ellipse for the rim looks lopsided, this is one of the easiest fixes in doodling: just draw it twice lightly in pencil first, pick the rounder one, and ink only that line. A saucer underneath, drawn as one more flat ellipse, steadies the whole composition.
This pairs nicely with the warm, glowing feel you will find in these teapot drawing lessons if you want to keep building a little cozy drinks collection in your sketchbook.
Palette: Sage Green,Peach,Ink Black
Start with the cupcake wrapper, drawn as a short trapezoid with a few vertical pleats, then pile a swirl of frosting on top using one continuous looping line rather than lifting your pen. That single swirl is what makes frosting look soft instead of lumpy.
Push the thin birthday candle into the top of the swirl at a slight angle, with a small flame leaning the same direction as if a breath of air just passed by. Colour the wrapper peach and the frosting swirl sage, keeping the flame as the only warm peach accent up top.
If the swirl comes out too tight, loosen your wrist and draw it bigger than feels natural, frosting always wants more room than you think. A few small dot sprinkles scattered on the swirl finish it off without adding real detail work.
Draw this one at the end of a page where a quick, cheerful subject helps you stop on a high note.
Palette: Peach,Sage Green,Ink Black
Draw the cat first, since its curled shape sets the scale for everything else on the page. Keep the body as one soft oval with the tail wrapped around it, two small triangle ears on top, and no visible face beyond a closed eye line or two.
Place a short pillar candle just beside the curled cat, smaller than the cat’s body so it reads as a bedside detail rather than competing for attention. The flame can be tiny and calm, a small peach teardrop with no face this time, since the cat is doing the charm here.
If the cat’s proportions feel off, compare the curled body to a simple circle first: most sleeping cats fit inside one slightly squashed circle with the tail as the only part that escapes it. Colour the cat lightly in sage as a warm grey stand in, or leave it uncoloured and let the candle carry the peach.
For more sleepy animal company on the page, the ideas in this cozy dog journal collection use the same curled up, half asleep feeling.
Palette: Sage Green,Peach,Ink Black
Build the lantern as a simple box shape with a peaked top and a small ring handle, keeping the sides straight so the glass panels read clearly. Draw one vertical line down each side to suggest the metal frame holding the glass panes together.
Place a short candle inside, centered low so there is visible space above the flame inside the glass. This is where eye level and light matter: draw the flame’s glow as a soft peach halo that spreads slightly beyond the lantern’s glass lines, as if the light is leaking past the frame.
The easy mistake is making the lantern frame too thick, which can swallow the candle inside. Keep the frame lines thin and let the sage colour sit only on the metal parts, top, base and handle, so the glass areas stay open and bright.
A quick ten minute version skips the glow entirely and just colours the flame. The forty minute version adds that soft peach halo bleeding past the glass for a proper lit up feeling.
Palette: Peach,Sage Green,Ink Black
Draw the pillar candle body first with its sides perfectly straight, since the interest here comes from what is pressed into the wax rather than the candle shape itself. Leave a small flat patch near the top of the candle unshaded, this is where the dried flower will sit.
Sketch a tiny pressed flower, three or four simple petals and a thin stem, half embedded into that patch as if the wax has set around it. Colour the petals peach and the little stem and leaf sage, keeping both smaller and quieter than the flame above.
If the flower looks too tidy, remember dried flowers are never symmetrical: let one petal sit slightly crumpled or overlapping another. A single thin line can suggest the wax surface closing back in around the stem.
Swap the flower for a small pressed leaf or a sprig of lavender if flowers feel fiddly, the technique and placement stay exactly the same.
Palette: Peach,Sage Green,Ink Black
Draw the taper itself first as one long, gently tapering line shape, narrower at the top than the base, since the whole appeal of a taper is that slight elegant narrowing. Keep the line work smooth and avoid a straight sided pillar look.
Underneath it, build the brass holder from a small cup shape that the candle base sits into, flaring out to a wider round foot below. Colour the holder sage as a soft stand in for brass rather than true metallic yellow, which keeps the doodle palette consistent.
Getting the taper’s taper right is mostly a proportion question: measure the candle’s total height against your pen, then narrow the top third only, not the whole shaft, or it will look like a stick rather than a candle.
Finish with a small peach flame sitting slightly off center at the very top, since taper flames rarely burn perfectly straight. A thin drip line down one side adds realism without much extra work.
Palette: Sage Green,Peach,Ink Black
Start with the tray as a long thin rectangle with slightly rounded corners, wide enough to lay a small book and a candle side by side across it. This wider, horizontal layout changes how you place everything compared to the taller candles earlier in this list.
Draw the open book first, two curved pages meeting in the middle, then add the short candle beside it with its flame tilted gently away from the book as if a little warm air is moving across the tray. Colour the book covers sage and the candle flame peach.
The common mistake with a bath tray scene is cramming too much onto it. Leave visible white space between the book and candle rather than pushing them together, since a little breathing room is what makes the scene feel calm rather than cluttered.
A thin wavy line or two beneath the tray can suggest water without drawing a whole bathtub, letting the two main objects stay the focus.
Palette: Sage Green,Peach,Ink Black
Draw the candle body plainly, since all the personality in this one sits at the very top. Instead of the usual teardrop flame, shape it as a small rounded heart, two soft bumps at the top narrowing to a point at the bottom where it meets the wick.
Colour the heart flame fully in peach, with a thin white gap left unshaded down the center for that familiar lit up sliver of highlight. Keep the candle body itself small and simple, maybe with a touch of sage at the base, so all the warmth reads in the flame.
Hearts are easy to get lopsided, so lightly pencil a small vertical guideline down the center first and draw both bumps symmetrically around it before inking. Erase the guideline once the ink is dry.
This is a nice one to repeat smaller in the corner of a page as a little recurring motif, and it pairs well with other sweet, simple motifs if you enjoy the small scene ideas in this mini doodle collection.
Palette: Peach,Sage Green,Ink Black
Draw the mug first, a simple rounded cylinder with one curved handle, then add a few short curved lines rising from the rim to suggest steam. Place the candle just beside the mug rather than behind it, so both objects sit clearly at the same table level.
Keep the two flames of warmth, the candle’s actual flame and the mug’s steam, close in size so neither overpowers the other. Colour the mug sage and let the candle’s small peach flame be the brightest point in the whole scene.
If the steam lines look stiff, draw them with a slight wobble and let them fade out rather than stopping abruptly, more like a soft trailing line than a solid curl.
No candle on hand to copy from life. Any small mug or cup you have nearby works as a stand in model for the proportions, even an empty one.
Palette: Sage Green,Peach,Ink Black
Draw the window frame first as a simple grid, two or three panes across and down, since this gives you a clean structure to place everything inside. Set a short candle on the windowsill inside one of the lower panes, its flame facing into the room.
Outside the glass, add short diagonal rain lines, all leaning the same direction, which also tells you where the implied light and weather are coming from. Keep the rain lines thin and sage colored so they read as cool and outside, while the candle’s peach flame stays warm and inside.
The easiest way to ruin this scene is drawing the rain too thick or too random. Keep every line the same gentle angle and roughly the same length, and the eye will read it instantly as rain rather than scribbles.
Leave the glass itself completely white and uncoloured, that contrast between a plain pane and the shaded rain outside is what sells the window.
Palette: Peach,Sage Green,Ink Black
Draw a simple jar candle body first, wider and shorter than a pillar, since most scented candles come in a stout glass jar. Leave the top open and the wax surface flat with just a small rim line to show the glass edge.
Lay a single lavender sprig across the top of the jar rather than standing it upright, with a handful of small oval buds along one thin stem rather than dozens of tiny dots. Colour the buds sage with a hint of peach mixed in if you like a dustier purple feeling, and keep the flame itself peach as always.
Lavender sprigs get fussy fast if you draw every bud separately, so group them in small clusters along the stem instead, three or four buds per cluster, which reads just as well from a normal viewing distance and takes far less time.
If lavender is not to hand as reference, any small clustered flower spike works the same way, just keep the bud count moderate rather than crowding the stem.
Palette: Sage Green,Peach,Ink Black
Choose a single digit and draw it first as the cake’s whole silhouette, a thick rounded number rather than a round or square cake. Keep the digit simple, a one or a seven works more easily than a curvy three or eight at this scale.
Once the number shape is settled, add a short scalloped line of frosting along the top edge and tuck one small candle into the center of the digit. Colour the cake body sage and let the candle’s peach flame be the only warm spot on the page.
The scale of the numbers can throw off proportions fast, so sketch the digit lightly in pencil first and check it still reads clearly as that number from a short distance before inking over it.
A few dot sprinkles scattered across the top finish the cake without adding any real extra drawing time.
Palette: Sage Green,Peach,Ink Black
Draw a tall straight sided cylinder for the body, then commit to the drips as the main event rather than an afterthought. Let three or four wax drips run down from just under the flame at different lengths, some stopping partway and one running all the way to the base.
Shade the candle body lightly in sage, but leave each drip line mostly white with just a thin outline, since wax drips catch light and look best pale against a shaded surface. Keep the flame peach and slightly larger than on the shorter candles earlier in the list, since a tall pillar can carry a bigger flame.
Drips that are too uniform in length and spacing look fake, so vary them deliberately: one short, one long, one that curls slightly to the side before continuing down.
If you want more texture here, try dry brushing a pale sage marker lightly over part of the candle body for a soft waxy sheen rather than flat colour.
Palette: Sage Green,Peach,Ink Black
Draw a simple half orange shape first, a rounded dome with the inner flesh visible as a few curved segment lines, since this candle is really just an orange peel used as a natural holder. Leave a small well in the center where the wax and wick would sit.
Colour the outer peel peach, since the two happen to share almost the same warm tone, and let a thin sage line or two suggest the white pith between peel and flesh. Place a small flame rising from the center well, slightly smaller than your usual candle flame since this is a tiny improvised one.
The segment lines inside the orange half are the trickiest part, so keep them few and curved gently toward a center point rather than drawing every segment the fruit might actually have.
This is a nice quick one to pair with a cup of tea nearby, and it mixes well with warm, kitchen leaning subjects if you enjoy small food scenes like those in this kawaii sketchbook collection.
Palette: Peach,Sage Green,Ink Black
Draw the candle and its unlit wick first, a plain short cylinder with a small dark wick tip and no flame yet. Then bring in a hand holding a lit match from one side, keeping the hand simple, just a rounded mitten shape with a few finger lines rather than detailed knuckles.
Place the match flame close to but not quite touching the wick, since that small gap is what tells the eye the lighting is about to happen. Colour the match flame and the faint glow beginning on the wick both in peach, slightly smaller on the wick side to show it has only just caught.
Hands are often where confidence drops, so simplify deliberately: a rounded palm shape, a thumb, and three fingers suggested with short lines is enough, you do not need every knuckle to sell the gesture.
If drawing a hand feels like too much today, swap it for just the match resting at an angle beside the candle with its flame reaching toward the wick, no hand required.
Palette: Peach,Ink Black,Sage Green
Draw a wide shallow bowl first, a simple curved outline with an ellipse for the rim, since the bowl’s width is what makes the floating candle idea read clearly. Keep the water surface inside as a flat ellipse rather than filling the whole bowl solid.
Place a short, flat disc shaped candle sitting right on the water line, smaller and shorter than the standing candles elsewhere on this list, since floating candles are always squat. Add a few thin curved ripple lines radiating gently outward from its base to show it resting on the surface rather than floating in mid air.
Colour the water a very pale sage wash if your markers allow light enough pressure, leaving most of the bowl white, and keep the flame peach as the single warm point above the cool water.
If ripples come out too mechanical, draw them as broken, uneven arcs rather than full circles, water rarely ripples in neat complete rings.
Palette: Sage Green,Peach,Ink Black
Draw the journal first as a simple rectangle with a thin spine line down one side, laid flat as if open on a desk, then add a short pen resting diagonally across one page. Place the candle just above or beside the journal, smaller in scale so it reads as a desk companion rather than the main subject.
This is a good one to work quickly, the ten minute version is just these three shapes with a small peach flame and done. The forty minute version adds a few short wavy lines across the journal page to suggest handwriting, without needing actual readable words.
Colour the journal cover sage and let the pen stay mostly uncoloured black ink, keeping the candle’s peach flame the brightest element in the little desk scene.
If you enjoy filling pages with small themed scenes like this one, the ideas in this guide to filling a sketchbook offer plenty more quick desk and still life setups to try next.
Palette: Sage Green,Peach,Ink Black
Draw the candle plainly first, since the moth is what gives this one its charm and needs the most careful placement. Keep the flame modest in size and position the moth hovering just to the side of it, never directly on the flame, wings spread in a simple fan shape with two small antennae.
Shade the moth’s wings in sage with a few short peach dash marks near the wingtips, almost like the candle glow is just catching the edges. This small bit of shared colour between moth and flame is what ties the whole doodle together.
Moths are easy to overcomplicate with wing patterns, so keep the markings to a handful of simple dashes or dots rather than a full symmetrical pattern. Two matching marks per wing is plenty.
If moths feel too fiddly to draw from memory, a small triangle shaped wing pair with rounded edges and no pattern at all still reads clearly as a moth beside a flame.
Palette: Sage Green,Peach,Ink Black
Draw the mushroom cap first as a simple dome, then narrow it into a short straight stem below, the way the earlier taper candle narrowed but reversed, wide on top instead of at the bottom. This shape swap is a nice one to try once the standard candle shapes already feel comfortable.
Add a handful of small white dots scattered across the dome’s surface in reserved white space, or just a few thin sage outline circles if you want to keep colour to a minimum. Place the flame rising from the very top center of the dome, peach as always.
The easy trap here is making the cap too small for the stem, so sketch the stem’s width first and then draw the cap roughly twice as wide before rounding it off.
Once this version works, try varying it next time with a flatter, wider cap or a taller thinner stem, since mushroom shapes offer plenty of small variations to explore across a few different pages.
Palette: Peach,Sage Green,Ink Black
Draw a simple checked blanket first, a loose square or rectangle with a light grid of crossing lines rather than a perfectly ruled pattern, since a slightly uneven check actually looks more like real fabric. Place a short candle near one corner of the blanket rather than dead center, which leaves room for a small basket or a cup nearby if you want to add one.
Since this scene happens at dusk, think about where the light comes from: the candle is now the main light source on the page, so a soft peach glow spreading gently around its base onto the blanket sells the time of day more than any sky detail would.
Colour alternating checks on the blanket sage and leave the others white, keeping the pattern loose rather than mechanically even. A few simple grass blade marks along the blanket’s edge ground it outdoors.
If a full checked pattern feels like too much, a plain blanket with just a thin sage border still carries the same outdoor feeling with far less line work.
Palette: Sage Green,Peach,Ink Black
Draw the just extinguished candle first, a plain pillar with the flame already gone, leaving only a small dark wick tip. This is the opposite moment from most of the candles on this list, so let the mood shift into something quieter.
Add the snuffer itself just beside the wick, a small cone shape on a thin handle, as if it has just been lifted away. From the wick tip, draw one soft wavy line of smoke curling upward and thinning out as it rises, rather than a thick solid plume.
Smoke is one of the trickier textures here, so lighten your pen pressure as the line rises and let it break into a dotted trail near the top instead of a continuous stroke, which reads as smoke dispersing into the air.
Keep the sage and peach to a minimum in this one, maybe just a touch of peach where the wick tip still glows faintly, since a calmer, mostly black and white palette suits this quieter moment.
Palette: Ink Black,Peach,Sage Green
Draw a simple scallop shell first, a fanned half circle with several ridged lines radiating out from a central point near the hinge. Nestle a small amount of wax and a short wick into the shell’s bowl, as if the shell itself is the holder rather than a separate container.
Colour alternating ridges on the shell in soft sage, leaving the others white, which gives the shell its characteristic striped texture without much extra effort. Keep the flame small and peach, sitting just above the shell’s curved rim.
Shell ridges can turn into a mess of lines quickly, so count them before you start, five or six ridges reads clearly as a scallop shell and keeps the drawing from getting busy.
This pairs naturally with other seaside or nature themed pages, and if you enjoy small natural object studies like this, the shapes and textures explored in this bird junk journal collection use a similar light touch with pattern and texture.
Palette: Sage Green,Peach,Ink Black
Close the list the same gentle way it opened, but this time give the candle itself a face rather than the flame. Draw the candle body as a simple rounded cylinder, then add two small closed eye lines, curved lashes, and a tiny soft mouth somewhere in the upper third of the body.
Let the flame above stay plain and peach, calm rather than expressive, since the personality has moved down into the candle’s face for this one. A soft sage blush mark on each cheek adds warmth without needing any real shading.
Faces drawn this small can end up looking startled if the eyes sit too high or too wide apart, so keep them close together and slightly low on the body, which reads instantly as sleepy rather than surprised.
Use this one as a last page motif, a small recurring sleepy candle in the corner of several different spreads ties a whole notebook together without much repeated effort.
Palette: Peach,Sage Green,Ink Black
Try drawing this same sleepy face on a couple of the earlier candle shapes, like the jar or teacup candle, to build a small set of matching characters across your page.
What to Do Next
Pick one candle that caught your eye, maybe the jar with the happy flame or the sleepy faced pillar, and start there on a plain or dot grid page with your fineliner close at hand. Once the first one feels easy, the rest of this list makes a nice little string of pages to fill over the next few sittings.
Frequently Asked Questions
What pens work best for a candle doodle like this?
A black fineliner in a fine tip, around 0.3 to 0.5, works best since it keeps wicks and outlines crisp. Add peach and sage dual tip markers for the flame and accent colours once the ink has fully dried.
How do I make a doodled flame look lit rather than flat?
Leave a thin unshaded sliver down one side of the flame shape before colouring the rest peach. That small white gap reads as a highlight and instantly makes the flame look like it is glowing rather than sitting flat on the page.
Do I need to draw the candle perfectly straight?
No, a slightly uneven or tilted candle usually looks more charming in a doodle than a perfectly ruled one. Keep the wick a little bent and the flame leaning gently, since that looseness is part of the style.
What if I only have one marker colour instead of two?
Use whichever colour you have for the flame, since warmth there matters most, and leave the rest of the drawing in plain black ink. A single accent colour still ties a whole page of candles together nicely.
How small should these candle doodles be?
Most work well at about the size of a large postage stamp up to a playing card, small enough to finish in minutes. Keeping them small also keeps the shapes simple, which suits this loose, quick style best.
