28 Rubber Duck Drawing Ideas of Little Ducks on Big Adventures

32

A rubber duck drawing is the perfect excuse to draw something silly and sweet at the same time: one round little bird, a few bold outlines, and a situation that makes you smile before the marker even touches the paper. That small yellow body is forgiving to draw and endlessly fun to dress up, drop into trouble, or send off on an adventure that has nothing to do with bathtime.

Below are 28 of those adventures, each one a complete little scene you can finish in a single sitting. Grab your fineliner and markers, pick whichever duck makes you laugh first, and work your way down the list whenever you want a quick, cheerful win on the page.

Start with the easiest scene on the list: a rubber duck in a bubble bath, sitting low in a scallop of soap foam. Sketch the duck’s body as one rounded oval with a smaller oval for the head, then ink the outline with your fineliner before adding any color, keeping the line loose and bouncy rather than stiff.

Block in the yellow body first with your marker, leaving the orange beak and a small white highlight oval untouched by color. Layer a second, slightly darker yellow along the underside of the body to suggest where the duck sits in the water, which is the one trick that keeps a flat yellow shape from looking like a sticker.

Draw the bubbles as loose overlapping circles in pale blue or grey, varying their sizes so they do not read as a repeated pattern. If you only have one blue marker, use it at different pressures: light for far bubbles, firmer for the ones nearest the duck.

Finish with a few tiny white gel pen dots on the bubbles for shine, your one concrete win for today.

Give your duck a little uniform next by drawing a duck in a sailor hat, tipped at a jaunty angle on its round head. Pencil the body shape first, then add the hat as a simple half-circle brim with a flat top band, checking that the hat sits slightly off-center so the pose feels playful rather than stiff.

Here is the one proportion trick that keeps this duck from looking top-heavy: the hat brim should be about the same width as the duck’s whole body, no wider. Ink the outline once you are happy with that balance, then fill the duck in yellow and the hat in white, leaving a thin navy stripe around the band.

Blend the navy stripe with a light pass of your marker so it does not sit as a hard flat line, and use the tip of a blue marker to add two small curved lines for wind creases in the hat brim. If navy is not in your set, a dark teal reads just as nautical.

Keep the beak a cheerful orange and the whole thing finishes in well under an hour.

From a bathtub duck to an outdoor one, try a duck floating down a stream between two grassy banks. Light comes from one side in this scene, so decide early whether the sun sits upper left or upper right, because that choice tells you which side of the duck and the water gets the brighter color.

Draw the duck small and slightly off-center in the lower half of the page, with the stream as a loose horizontal band of blue-green that narrows gently toward the top to suggest it curving away into the distance. Ink the duck and the bank edges, then color the water in long horizontal marker strokes, leaving thin white gaps between strokes for sparkle.

On the lit side of the duck, add a touch of pale yellow-white along the top of its back; on the shadow side, deepen the water color right beneath it so the duck looks like it is actually sitting in the stream rather than floating above it.

If you do not have a green-blue marker, mix a blue and a green stroke side by side while the ink is still wet.

Finish the banks with short upright green strokes for grass, keeping them loose rather than drawing each blade.

Scale things down with a duck in a teacup, perched as if it just climbed in for a soak. The texture trick here is all in the teacup’s shine: once you have inked the cup’s simple curved shape and handle, use a dry brush pass with a lighter marker over the body of the cup before the darker color goes down fully, so the porcelain keeps a soft gradient instead of one flat tone.

Draw the duck sitting inside the rim, only its head, back and the tip of its tail visible above the cup’s edge, which instantly sells the joke that it does not fit. Color the duck first, then the cup, and save the saucer for last so you are not resting your hand on wet ink.

Add a thin steam line or two curling up beside the duck’s head with a pale grey marker, barely there, just enough to suggest warm tea. If your lightest grey still reads too dark, use the white gel pen instead and let it sit on top of the light background.

A small painted flower motif on the cup, just two or three dabs of color, finishes it without extra fuss.

Bring a crowd into it with a rubber duck race on a river, several ducks bobbing along at different points in the current. Work out the composition before you ink anything: place one duck clearly ahead near the top of the page and the rest trailing behind at staggered heights, because ducks lined up in a neat row kills the sense of a race.

Draw each duck as the same simple oval-and-head shape but tilt a few of them slightly, as if bobbing on uneven water, and vary their size a touch with distance so the leading duck reads as farther along the river rather than just bigger. Ink all the ducks first, then the water, so you are not painting around wet duck outlines.

Color the river in horizontal strokes same as the stream idea, but add small white gel pen flicks right behind each duck to suggest the wake it is pushing through the water, which does more to sell motion than anything else in this scene.

If you are short on time, three ducks tell the story just as well as six.

Try numbering each duck with a tiny painted digit on its side for a county-fair feel, the way real rubber duck races are run.

Pull the mood up a notch with a duck in sunglasses, floating alone on a bright swimming pool. Eye level sits right at the water’s surface here, which is what lets you draw a believable reflection: sketch the duck normally above an imaginary horizontal line, then mirror a softer, slightly wavy version of its shape just below that line in a muted version of the same colors.

Ink the duck and its sunglasses first, keeping the glasses as two simple dark ovals joined by a thin bridge, then block in the pool in bright cyan-blue marker, leaving the area right around the duck a touch lighter to suggest the water parting around its body.

Draw the reflection with short loose horizontal strokes rather than a clean copy of the duck, because real water reflections always break apart a little. A few curved white gel pen lines radiating from the duck finish the ripples.

Swap the sunglasses for a simple dark visor shape if ovals feel fiddly, the joke lands the same either way.

Move indoors for a duck in the sink, perched beside an oversized toothbrush as if it just wandered in for its own brushing routine. Draw the sink basin first as a simple rounded rectangle with a curved inner edge, then place the duck standing inside it, smaller than you might expect, since the joke depends on the sink reading clearly larger than the bird.

The toothbrush leans against the basin’s rim, bristles splayed in a loose fan shape rather than drawn one by one, which keeps the ink work quick and still reads clearly from across a room. Color the basin in cool white-grey tones with a faint blue shadow pooling at its lowest point, and give the toothbrush handle a bright, unexpected color like coral or mint for contrast against all that yellow and white.

If your fineliner line wobbles on the basin’s curve, go over it a second time once the first line dries rather than trying to erase and redo it, a wobble reads as hand-drawn charm here, not a mistake.

A dab of white toothpaste foam on the bristles is the last fun detail to add.

Palette: Canary Yellow,Basin Grey,Coral Pink,Pale Blue

Bring the duck somewhere it absolutely does not belong next: sitting on top of an open laptop like it owns the place. Draw the laptop first as two simple rectangles meeting at a hinge, keeping the screen mostly blank or showing just a few loose lines to suggest text, since a busy screen will fight with the duck for attention.

Here is your ten-minute version: duck perched on the laptop’s top edge, body colored, a few keyboard keys sketched in, done. The forty-minute version adds a soft blue glow from the screen catching the underside of the duck’s body, a scattering of coffee-cup rings or sticky notes beside the laptop, and a slightly bent corner on one sticky note for extra charm.

Color the laptop in cool greys and the screen in a pale glowing blue, then let that blue marker bleed just slightly onto the duck’s lower edge where the light would hit it, which is the detail that makes the whole scene feel lit rather than just colored in.

Keep the duck’s expression neutral or a little smug, it suits the joke.

Palette: Canary Yellow,Laptop Grey,Screen Blue,Sticky Yellow

After one duck at a time, try a row of rubber ducks lined up shoulder to shoulder like they are waiting for something. The trick to keeping a row interesting is to never draw the ducks identical: vary the tilt of each head a few degrees, nudge a couple slightly forward or back, and let one duck’s beak point a different direction from the rest.

Sketch all the body ovals lightly in pencil first so you can check the spacing feels even before you commit any ink, then outline left to right so your hand never drags over wet lines. Color every duck the same base yellow for unity, but vary the shadow tone beneath each one slightly, since uniform shadows are what make a row of identical shapes look stiff rather than charming.

If six ducks feels like too much for one sitting, four still reads as a proper row; just keep the spacing between them consistent even if the ducks themselves differ.

Finish with a single thin baseline shadow running beneath the whole row to ground them on one surface.

Palette: Canary Yellow,Orange Peel,Shadow Grey,Paper White

Take the duck outside for a duck in a rain puddle, standing in the one bright wet patch on an otherwise plain sidewalk. Eye level stays low and close for this one, almost at puddle height, which lets you draw a tall vertical reflection of the duck’s body stretching down into the water rather than a squashed horizontal one.

Ink the duck and the puddle’s uneven oval outline first, then color the sidewalk around it in flat warm grey, leaving the puddle itself for last. Fill the puddle in a cooler grey-blue than the pavement so the two surfaces read as clearly different, then drop in the duck’s reflection using slightly diluted or lighter strokes of the same yellow and orange.

A few scattered raindrops as small white gel pen dashes across the sidewalk, heavier near the puddle’s edge, finish the scene and explain why there is water there at all.

If grey feels flat on its own, warm it very slightly with a touch of brown beneath the pavement’s base color.

Keep the energy up with a duck on a surfboard, riding the crest of one simple wave. Draw the surfboard first as a long narrow oval tapering at both ends, and angle it diagonally across the page rather than flat, since a tilted board is most of what reads as motion here before you have even added the wave.

Position the duck standing on the board’s back third with its body leaning slightly into the tilt, feet tucked under rather than drawn in detail. Ink the board and duck, then build the wave beneath them as one large curling shape in deep blue, with a lighter blue-white foam line along its crest.

Drybrush a little white marker or gel pen along the board’s leading edge to suggest spray kicking up, applying light, broken strokes rather than a solid line, which reads as splashing water far better than a continuous mark would.

A short surfboard in a bright stripe pattern adds personality if you want to push the scene further.

Give the duck a second costume with a duck in a pirate hat, the classic black tricorn tilted low over one eye. Measure the hat against the duck’s head before you ink anything: the brim’s widest points should extend just past the edges of the head on either side, any wider and the duck disappears under it.

Draw the hat shape first in pencil, checking the proportion, then ink both duck and hat together. Color the hat in solid black or deep charcoal, leaving a small white gel pen skull-and-crossbones mark on the front if you want the full pirate joke, or a plain patch of white if that feels fussy.

Add a thin eyepatch strap across the duck’s head with a single curved line, and color the eyepatch itself solid black to match the hat, which ties the costume together without adding real complexity to the drawing.

Finish the beak in a slightly deeper orange than usual, it reads as more roguish against all that black.

Switch to a duck in a fishbowl next, floating inside the glass like it has swapped places with the actual fish. Glass is the texture challenge here: ink the round bowl outline first, then color the water inside in pale blue, leaving two or three curved vertical streaks of untouched white paper running down the glass to read as reflected light.

Draw the duck sitting inside the bowl at a slightly smaller scale than it would be outside one, which is the visual cue that tells the eye it is genuinely contained in there rather than just standing behind glass. A single goldfish sharing the bowl, drawn small in one corner, adds a second joke without extra effort.

Color the base of the bowl with a thin oval of gravel in muted browns and a few dots for texture, kept loose rather than detailed. If pale blue for the water reads too flat, deepen it slightly toward the bottom of the bowl so there is a soft gradient.

A curved white gel pen highlight along the bowl’s rim finishes the glass illusion.

Scale comedy drives this one: a duck with a giant swan float, the kind of inflatable pool toy that completely dwarfs it. Draw the swan float first, filling most of the page, as one large rounded body shape with a long curved neck and simple wing lines pressed into the plastic look with a few soft fold creases.

Place the duck standing small on the swan’s back or peeking over its edge, deliberately tiny against that huge pink shape, since the whole joke depends on the size gap reading instantly. Ink the swan’s outline with slightly heavier line weight than the duck’s to keep it feeling solid and inflated rather than flat.

Color the swan in soft pink with a slightly deeper pink in its fold creases, and leave a few clean white highlight streaks along its curved neck to sell that plastic sheen. If pink markers run light, layer two passes in the same spot and let them dry between layers.

Keep the duck’s yellow bright and small so it still pops against all that pink.

Palette: Canary Yellow,Flamingo Pink,Deep Pink,Paper White

Send the duck airborne with a duck flying a paper plane, perched astride a simple folded paper plane as if piloting it through the sky. Fold logic matters here even on paper: draw the plane as a few flat angled triangles meeting at sharp creases, the kind you would actually get from folding a sheet, rather than a rounded cartoon rocket shape.

Position the duck sitting just behind the plane’s nose, leaning slightly forward into the direction of flight, and tilt the whole plane diagonally across the page the same way you tilted the surfboard earlier, since a straight horizontal plane reads as parked rather than flying.

Ink the plane in crisp straight lines using a ruler if your hand needs the steadiness, then color it plain white or pale cream with thin grey shading along each fold to show where light catches the creases. A few small cloud shapes drawn loosely in the background, left mostly as white paper with a thin grey outline, finish the sense of height.

Keep clouds to two or three so the sky stays light and uncluttered.

Head to the beach for a duck buried in sand, only its head and the tip of its tail poking out of a mound someone clearly built around it. Draw the sand mound first as one soft, lumpy dome shape, wider at the base, and keep its outline irregular rather than a perfect circle so it reads as loosely piled sand rather than a smooth rock.

Place the duck’s head emerging near the top of the mound and a small triangle of tail at the opposite side, with the rest of the body implied rather than drawn, which is exactly what sells the joke without any extra work. Color the sand in warm tan with slightly darker dabs scattered across it for texture, applied with the marker’s broad edge rather than its fine tip.

A small plastic beach bucket and spade stuck in beside the mound finishes the scene and explains how the duck got buried in the first place.

If tan markers run too orange, mix in a touch of grey to cool the sand down.

Palette: Canary Yellow,Sand Tan,Shadow Tan,Pail Red

Bring the duck somewhere thoroughly mundane with a duck in a shopping cart, riding along in the child seat like it is out running errands. The cart’s wire grid is the one place a beginner tends to overcomplicate things: draw only a loose suggestion of crosshatched lines across the cart’s basket rather than a full tight grid, since too much detail there will fight with the duck for attention.

Sketch the cart’s basic frame first, wheels included, keeping the whole shape slightly wider at the top than the bottom the way real carts taper, then seat the duck inside the child seat area near the handle. Ink the cart in a confident single pass and color it in flat silver-grey, with a few short white gel pen streaks along the metal bars for shine.

If silver marker is not in your kit, pale blue-grey reads just as metallic once it sits next to bright yellow.

A couple of loose grocery items, a leafy carrot top or a box shape, poking out of the main basket rounds out the joke.

Move from errands to a party with a duck on top of a cake, perched where the figurine usually goes on a tiered birthday cake. Draw the cake first as two or three stacked rounded rectangles of decreasing width, since getting that taper right is what makes a cake read as a cake instead of a stack of boxes.

Place the duck standing on the very top tier, and here is your quick-version plan: for a ten-minute take, color the cake in one flat frosting tone with simple piped dot borders between tiers; for the fuller forty-minute version, add a drip effect running down each tier’s edge and a scatter of small painted sprinkles across the top.

Ink the cake’s tiers and piping details before coloring, then block in soft pastel frosting tones layer by layer from bottom to top so you are never resting your marker on a tier you just colored.

Finish with tiny dot sprinkles in two or three bright colors scattered loosely rather than evenly, which reads far more natural than a neat grid of dots.

Palette: Canary Yellow,Frosting Pink,Mint Green,Sprinkle Blue

Build on the row-of-ducks idea with a duck in a hot tub, one larger duck surrounded by several mini ducks like a whole family soaking together. Draw the big duck first, roughly twice the size of the small ones, and place it centered or slightly toward one side with the mini ducks scattered around it at different distances rather than lined up evenly.

Ink the hot tub’s rounded edge and a few bubble jet lines along its inner wall before coloring, then fill the water in warm teal with small clustered white gel pen dots near the jets to suggest bubbling warmth rather than still water.

Vary each mini duck’s head tilt slightly the same way you varied the row of ducks earlier, since identical mini ducks will flatten the charm of the scene. If five mini ducks feels like too many small shapes for one sitting, three keeps the joke just as clear.

A folded towel draped over the tub’s rim is a nice extra detail if you have time left.

Palette: Canary Yellow,Hot Tub Teal,Towel White,Wood Brown

Shift into a cosier mood with a duck in a snow globe, sealed inside the round glass dome with snow drifting around it. The glass dome calls for the same highlight trick you used on the fishbowl: ink the dome’s circular outline, color the inside in the palest blue-white, and leave two curved streaks of bare paper for the glass’s reflected light.

Draw the duck standing on a small white base inside the dome, and scatter loose white gel pen dots of varying sizes throughout the glass to read as falling snow, heavier near the bottom where snow naturally settles. Give the globe a simple wooden or gold base below the glass, colored in warm brown or muted gold.

If white gel pen dots smear on your particular marker paper, let the background color dry completely first, a few extra minutes of patience saves the whole effect.

A tiny painted pine sprig beside the duck inside the globe adds a wintry touch without much extra ink.

You Will Need

• white gel pen

Palette: Canary Yellow,Globe Blue,Base Gold,Pine Green

Keep the winter feeling going with a duck in a winter scarf, wrapped snugly around its neck with both ends trailing down. Draw the scarf as a simple looped band around the duck’s neck first, then let the two ends hang unevenly, one longer than the other, which reads far more natural than a perfectly symmetrical knot.

Ink the duck and scarf together, then add a soft knit texture with short parallel diagonal lines across the scarf’s surface, just a few per section rather than covering the whole thing, since too many lines will flatten the color beneath them. Color the scarf in a warm red or berry tone with the knit lines inked slightly darker than the base color so they read as texture rather than scribble.

A simple fringe at each trailing end, drawn as short straight lines fanning out, finishes the knit look. If red feels too bold against yellow, a deep plum or forest green sits just as well.

Keep the duck’s body otherwise plain so the scarf stays the star of the drawing.

Palette: Canary Yellow,Berry Red,Deep Berry,Paper White

Bring the duck back indoors for a duck in a plant pot, peeking out from among the leaves of a potted plant like it has made itself at home there. Draw the pot first as a simple tapered trapezoid shape, then build the plant’s leaves as a handful of larger rounded or pointed shapes rather than a mass of thin stems, which keeps the whole drawing readable at a glance.

Place the duck’s head and upper body nestled between two or three of the largest leaves, overlapping them slightly so it looks tucked in rather than floating in front. Ink the pot and leaves, then color the pot in warm terracotta and the leaves in two or three greens, darker where they overlap each other for simple depth.

If your green markers all read the same tone, add a light yellow pass over one or two leaves before the green to shift them slightly warmer.

A thin ring of soil texture at the pot’s rim, just a few short dark dashes, finishes the planting detail.

Palette: Canary Yellow,Terracotta,Leaf Green,Deep Green

Set the scene somewhere quiet with a duck on a bookshelf, perched between a stack of leaning books like a tiny, unlikely bookend. Draw a short row of three or four books first, varying their heights and thicknesses, and lean a couple of them slightly against each other rather than standing every one perfectly upright, since a too-tidy shelf looks stiff next to a cheerful duck.

Place the duck standing or sitting in the gap between two books, and ink the whole group together before adding color so the spine lines of each book stay crisp. Color each book a different flat tone, keeping the palette to three or four colors total so the shelf does not compete with the duck’s bright yellow.

A simple spine detail, one or two short horizontal lines near the top of each book, is enough texture; resist adding titles or tiny lettering, which reads cluttered at this scale.

If you want a quieter palette, use mostly muted tones for the books so the duck pops even harder by contrast.

Palette: Canary Yellow,Book Maroon,Book Teal,Book Mustard

Send the duck off exploring with a duck reading a map, holding or standing beside a large unfolded paper map like it is planning the next stop on a trip. Draw the map first as a single large rectangle with soft, slightly curled corners, since a perfectly flat rectangle reads as stiff paper rather than something being held open.

Fill the map loosely with a few wandering line shapes for roads or coastlines and a couple of small dot markers, keeping the detail sparse and suggestive rather than an actual legible map, which would take far longer than this drawing needs. Position the duck standing just behind or beside the map, body slightly angled as if leaning in to look at it.

Ink the duck and map together, then color the map in pale cream with the route lines in a single confident color, and leave the duck’s yellow as the brightest thing in the whole scene so the eye lands on it first.

A small compass rose drawn as a simple cross with four short points adds a nice travel touch if you have a few extra minutes.

Palette: Canary Yellow,Map Cream,Route Brown,Orange Peel

Keep the travel theme going with a duck in a bike basket, riding along in the woven basket mounted on the front of a bicycle. Draw just the front portion of the bike for this scene, the handlebar, front wheel and basket, since the whole bike crammed into the frame would shrink the duck down too far to feel like the star.

Sketch the basket as a simple rounded shape with a loose crosshatch pattern suggesting woven wicker, kept light rather than covering every gap, then nest the duck inside it with just its head and back visible over the rim. Ink the bike parts in a slightly heavier line than the duck so the metal reads as solid.

Color the wheel rim and handlebar in silver-grey, the basket in warm honey brown, and add a small flower or two tucked into the basket’s edge beside the duck for a cheerful finishing touch.

If wicker texture feels fiddly, a few short curved lines around the basket’s rim suggest it just as well as a full crosshatch would.

Palette: Canary Yellow,Honey Brown,Bike Silver,Flower Pink

Pair this one with the ideas in bicycle painting ideas with flower baskets if you want a whole little series of duck-meets-bike scenes.

Bring in a second character for a cat watching a rubber duck, the duck floating obliviously in a sink or bowl while a cat eyes it from just outside the frame. Draw the duck first and small, then build the cat much larger in the foreground, since the size contrast between a huge curious cat and a tiny unbothered duck is the whole joke of this scene.

Keep the cat’s pose simple: a rounded body shape, two triangular ears, and wide round eyes fixed intently on the duck, with its body leaning forward slightly as if about to pounce. Ink the cat in a slightly heavier outline than the duck to push it forward in the composition, then color it in solid grey, orange or black depending on which cat personality feels funniest to you.

Leave the cat’s eyes mostly white with small colored irises and tiny black pupils, which is what gives it that fixated, slightly unhinged stare cats get around water.

If you enjoy drawing animal personalities like this, the ideas in cat drawing ideas with big personalities are worth a look too.

Palette: Canary Yellow,Tabby Orange,Cat Grey,Eye Green

Take the duck to a pond for a duck on a lily pad with a frog, the two of them sharing one broad green pad like old friends. Draw the lily pad first as one large rounded shape with a single notch cut into its edge, the classic lily pad silhouette, then place the duck and the frog at opposite ends of it, balancing the weight of the composition.

Sketch the frog as a simple rounded body with two bulging eye circles on top, kept low and squat compared to the duck’s taller rounded shape, which is a nice bit of contrast between the two characters. Ink both animals and the pad together, then color the pad in two greens, a lighter tone toward its center and a deeper green along the edges where it meets the water.

Add a few simple lily pads floating nearby at a smaller scale to suggest a wider pond without having to draw the whole scene in detail.

If green feels like it is taking over the page, keep the water around the pads a pale, quiet blue so the greens have room to stand out.

Palette: Canary Yellow,Lily Green,Deep Lily Green,Frog Green

Close the list on a warm note with a duck with a birthday candle, a single lit candle balanced on its back like the duck itself is the cake. Draw the duck in its usual simple rounded shape first, then place one tall thin candle standing upright on its back, striped in a cheerful contrasting color and topped with a small teardrop flame shape.

Ink the duck and candle together, keeping the candle’s stripes as a few diagonal bands rather than a tight repeating pattern, then color the flame in warm yellow-orange with a tiny untouched white sliver at its very center for the brightest point of light. A soft orange glow radiating just slightly around the flame, blended lightly with your marker, finishes the warm lighting without needing any extra detail elsewhere.

If this is your first time blending a glow like that, work the color outward from the flame while the ink is still a little wet so the edge softens rather than stopping in a hard ring.

Give the duck a pleased, slightly smug little expression, it suits a duck that gets to be the birthday cake for once.

Palette: Canary Yellow,Flame Orange,Candle Stripe Red,Glow Peach

What to Do Next

Pick whichever duck made you smile first, whether that is the sailor hat, the snow globe or the cat giving it a suspicious stare, and start with two light pencil ovals on smooth marker paper. One finished scene today is plenty; the rest of the list will still be here the next time you want a quick, cheerful win on the page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest way to start a rubber duck drawing?

Start with two simple ovals, a larger one for the body and a smaller one for the head, joined with a short curved neck line. Add the beak and tail last, then outline in fineliner before adding any color.

What markers work best for a rubber duck drawing like these?

Alcohol-based art markers give the smooth blended color these scenes need, especially for the yellow body and any water or glass around it. Layer the same color twice in one spot for a richer, less streaky tone.

How do I keep the yellow duck from looking flat?

Add one slightly darker yellow layer along the underside of the body and a small untouched white highlight near the top. That simple light and shadow pair is enough to give a flat oval real roundness.

Do I need to draw the background in detail for these scenes?

No, a light, mostly plain background keeps the duck as the clear focus of each drawing. A few loose supporting shapes, like bubbles, waves or leaves, say enough without competing for attention.

What paper should I use for alcohol marker duck drawings?

Smooth, blend-friendly marker paper or bristol paper stops the ink from feathering and lets colors blend cleanly into each other. Regular printer paper will work in a pinch but the color will look more streaky.
