28 Love Painting Ideas of Two Cups, Doorstep Roses and Quiet Moments Together

4

A love painting does not need two faces locked together or a grand gesture. It needs two cups on a table, a coat on a hook beside another, a letter half read: the small traces that say someone else was just here, or is about to be. That is the whole appeal of painting love this way, and it is why these scenes are so satisfying to finish in one sitting.

Below you will find 28 quiet moments to paint in oil, from a sunny cafe table to a heart carved into a birch trunk in the snow. Each one comes with the colors to mix, the order to paint in, and a fix for the one place it usually goes wrong, so you can pick whichever one matches your mood tonight and get straight to the canvas.

Start with the cafe table itself: block in a warm cream tablecloth with a wide flat brush, keeping the brushstrokes loose so the oil paint sits in visible ridges rather than flat color. Place the two cups as simple ellipses first, one slightly closer to you and larger, the other smaller and set back, which is the fastest way to show they belong to two different people sharing the table.

Once the cups are blocked in, drop the folded newspaper between them as a soft rectangle of grey-cream, then add the steam above each cup with a few thin, curling strokes of white mixed with a touch of the background color so it reads as vapor, not smoke. The place this goes wrong is making both cups identical: vary their size and angle slightly so the table feels lived in rather than staged.

If you want the scene to feel sunlit, work a little cadmium yellow into the tablecloth where the light would fall and leave the far side cooler and greyer. No palette knife on hand is fine here, a stiff flat brush can scumble the same broken, textured color.

Finish with one small detail only, a spoon resting against a cup or a sugar cube on the saucer, so the eye has somewhere quiet to land.

Palette: Titanium White,Naples Yellow,Raw Umber,Sage Green

Lay in the tabletop first as a warm, slightly uneven cream so the oil paint already shows some texture before anything else goes on it. The letter sits just off center, a pale folded rectangle with a few loose, wavy lines standing in for handwriting: resist the urge to write real words, since a few confident marks read as script from a normal viewing distance far better than careful lettering does.

Build the jug of roses next to it as one soft mass of rose pink and burgundy rather than individual petals, using a loaded brush and letting the colors mix slightly on the canvas. A good trick for keeping the jug from looking flat is to compare its height to the letter beside it before you commit to the final shape: most beginners make the jug too small once the flowers are added on top.

If the roses start to look like a blob, pull a few short strokes of sage green in as leaves to break up the mass and give the eye a resting point. A butter knife left across a small plate nearby adds a nice everyday detail without extra work.

Keep the letter paler than everything around it so it stays the quiet focus of the painting.

Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Rose Pink,Naples Yellow,Sage Green

Block the snow in first as a cool, slightly blue-grey white, since snow almost never reads well as pure titanium straight from the tube. Use a palette knife to drag a bit of the white on thickly where the snow catches the light, which gives it real texture against the flatter door behind it.

Once the ground is in, place the bouquet as one warm mass of red and burgundy, letting a little of the wrapping paper show as a lighter triangle underneath. Eye level matters here: if you paint the doorstep from slightly above, looking down at the bouquet, the scene feels like someone has just arrived and set it down, which suits the quiet mood better than a straight-on view.

The door itself only needs a flat plane of color and a simple rectangle for a mat, nothing more. If your canvas starts to feel cold all over, warm the door’s shadow side with a touch of burgundy mixed into the brown so it echoes the roses.

No palette knife means a stiff bristle brush dabbed rather than stroked will give the snow similar texture.

Palette: Burgundy,Cadmium Red,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey

A few thin diagonal strokes of white dragged quickly over the finished snow suggest falling flakes and add movement without reworking the whole canvas.

Sketch the four boots loosely with thinned paint before you commit to color, comparing each pair against the other so one set reads clearly larger and the other smaller without a ruler in sight. That size difference is what tells the story here, so get it right before you load the brush with thicker paint.

Paint the larger boots in a deep burgundy-brown and the smaller pair in a softer, warmer tan, keeping both pairs leaning at slightly different angles rather than standing perfectly upright, which looks stiff. A worn floor mat underneath in a muted sage tone gives the boots something to sit on and stops them floating on bare canvas.

If the boots start looking like shapeless blobs, pull a thin dark line down the center back seam of each one with a small brush loaded with Payne’s grey, which instantly reads as boot construction. Rain boots instead of leather boots work just as well if that fits your reference better.

Finish with a puddle shape beneath each boot in a slightly darker, wetter tone of the floor color.

Palette: Burnt Umber,Burgundy,Sage Green,Payne’s Grey

Work the pillow first as the largest shape on the canvas, a soft cream with warm yellow light raking across one side and a cooler grey-lavender shadow on the other. Decide where your light source sits before you touch the rose, since that same light direction has to fall consistently across both the fabric and the flower or the whole painting feels off.

Once the pillow’s folds are blocked in with a few confident diagonal strokes, add the rose as one compact mass of rose pink with a darker burgundy center, using a small loaded brush rather than trying to paint individual petals. Keep the rose smaller than you think it should be: a rose that fills too much of the pillow stops reading as something left there gently.

If the pillow folds look too busy, simplify by blending two or three of the smaller shadow shapes into one larger one. A single leaf or short stem trailing from the rose adds just enough detail without competing with the flower.

Let the sunlit side of the pillow stay the lightest value on the whole canvas.

Begin with the bench as two simple horizontal planks in a weathered grey-brown, then place the two figures sitting close together as soft, simplified silhouettes rather than detailed portraits. Keep both faces turned slightly away or down, since the hands joining between them is the detail that should carry the whole emotion, not expressions.

Build the fallen leaves around the bench with loose, varied dabs of burgundy, ochre and burnt orange, letting some leaves overlap the bench legs so the whole scene feels settled into its season rather than cut out and placed on top. A good forty-minute version adds a soft path curving away behind the bench and a few bare tree trunks; the ten-minute version keeps the background as one flat wash of muted color.

If the figures start to look stiff, loosen the coats with a few extra folds painted wet-into-wet so the paint blends slightly at the edges. Scarves in sage green or burgundy tie the couple’s colors back to the leaves around them.

Keep the joined hands as the one area of the canvas painted with the most care.

Palette: Burnt Orange,Burgundy,Payne’s Grey,Sage Green

Paint the sky and balcony background first as one smooth gradient from soft rose pink near the horizon into a deeper dusk blue above, blended while the paint is still wet so there is no hard line between the two. This has to go in before the table details, since a light candle flame reads far more convincingly against a darker sky painted first.

Place the two wine glasses as tall, narrow shapes with a thin highlight of white down one side of each, then add the candle between them with a small, warm dab of yellow-orange for the flame and a soft halo of light blended around it with a dry brush. The place this scene usually fails is an overly bright, solid flame: keep it small and let the glow do the work instead.

If the balcony railing behind feels like it is competing with the glasses, simplify it to a few dark vertical lines suggested rather than fully painted. A second candle can replace the first if wine glasses are not available as reference.

Finish by dabbing a little of the candle’s warm color back into the glasses themselves, since real glass catches nearby light.

Palette: Rose Pink,Deep Blue,Naples Yellow,Titanium White

Measure the two bicycles against the stone wall behind them before you paint either one fully, since getting their height right against the wall’s stones is what makes them feel properly leaned rather than floating in front of it. Block the wall in first as warm, uneven stone blocks in cream and soft ochre, using a palette knife to drag some texture into the mortar lines.

Paint the bicycle frames as simple dark lines with a small brush, one frame slightly taller than the other, their wheels overlapping just enough to show they are leaning against each other as well as the wall. A basket on the front of one bike filled with a few loose lavender or rose shapes ties the scene to its setting without much extra work.

If the bicycles look too mechanical, loosen the wheel spokes to just a few quick crossed lines rather than a full circle of spokes. Any quiet stone wall or garden gate works as a stand-in for Provence if that reference is easier to find.

Keep the stone wall’s color warmer in the sun and cooler in the bikes’ shadow to ground them against it.

Palette: Naples Yellow,Raw Umber,Sage Green,Payne’s Grey

Set the eye level low, roughly waist height, looking up slightly at the figure, which makes the bouquet of tulips held against his chest the clear focal point of the canvas rather than his face. Keep the face simple, just a soft suggestion of features under an umbrella or raised collar, since the gesture of carrying the flowers home is what tells this story.

Block the rain-wet street first as a dark, reflective grey-blue with a few vertical streaks of lighter color dragged down to suggest rain and reflected light. Paint the tulips as a tight cluster of simple upright shapes in red, pink and soft yellow, letting the colors stay slightly separated rather than blending into mush.

If the rain starts to look like scratches, soften a few of the streaks with a dry brush pulled lightly over the wet paint. A coat in deep burgundy or sage green works well against the cooler street colors.

Finish with a scattering of small white dabs for raindrops caught in the air near the tulips.

Palette: Cadmium Red,Rose Pink,Payne’s Grey,Naples Yellow

Place the window frame first as a simple dark rectangle dividing the canvas, since everything else, the figure inside and the snow outside, builds around that one strong shape. Paint the interior side warmer, with soft cream and rose light suggesting a lamp nearby, and the window glass itself slightly cooler and greyer than the room.

Build the seated figure as a simple, soft silhouette holding a small pale rectangle for the letter, her face turned down toward the page rather than toward the viewer. The place this painting usually goes wrong is making the snow outside too detailed and busy, pulling focus from the quiet figure: keep the snowflakes as a handful of soft white dabs, not dozens.

If the room feels empty, add one small lamp or a plant on the windowsill in sage green to balance the composition. A cup of tea beside her works just as well as the letter if you would rather paint that instead.

Keep the warmest, brightest color inside the room so the eye settles there first.

Palette: Rose Pink,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Naples Yellow

Tilt the tray at a slight diagonal across the canvas rather than painting it flat and square, which instantly suggests movement, as if it is being carried rather than sitting still on a table. Block the tray itself in warm wood tones first, then add the coffee cup and peony on top once that base shape is settled.

Paint the peony as one soft, full mass of rose pink and cream, using a loaded brush and letting the petals blend slightly into each other rather than defining each one. A pair of hands holding the tray’s edges, simplified and without much detail, grounds the whole scene without needing a full figure.

If the tray looks like it is floating, add a cast shadow beneath it with a thin wash of Payne’s grey, which anchors it in space immediately. Toast or a soft-boiled egg can stand in for the coffee if that fits your reference better.

Keep the peony the brightest, most detailed element on the tray so it reads as the gift it is.

Palette: Rose Pink,Naples Yellow,Raw Umber,Payne’s Grey

Build the chessboard first as a simple grid of alternating light and dark squares, keeping the perspective shallow so it reads clearly without needing careful technical drawing. A firelight source from one side means the squares nearest the fire should carry warmer, oranger tones while the far side of the board stays cooler and greyer.

Once the board sits convincingly in that light, paint the two hands reaching toward each other across it as simplified, softly lit shapes, one slightly warmer and one slightly cooler to echo the firelight’s fall across the scene. Keep the chess pieces themselves loose, just a few vertical dabs of white and dark rather than carved detail.

If the hands look stiff or flat, warm the side closest to the fire with a touch more orange and let the far side stay in soft shadow, which gives them volume without extra linework. A backgammon board or a deck of cards works just as well if chess pieces are hard to find as reference.

Let the fire’s glow be the single warmest note on the whole canvas.

Palette: Burnt Orange,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Burgundy

Paint the quilt first, since its patchwork pattern sets the whole mood of the piece: block in a handful of soft rectangles in rose, cream and sage green rather than trying to paint every seam, letting a loose grid of thin dark lines suggest the stitching once the colors are dry enough to touch.

Place the two teacups and the pot between them as simple rounded shapes sitting slightly into the quilt’s folds rather than perched flatly on top, which helps them feel like they belong in the fabric rather than pasted over it. Steam rising from the pot in a few thin curling white strokes finishes the warmth of the scene.

If the patchwork starts to look too busy next to the cups, simplify the squares directly behind the teapot into one or two larger, quieter shapes so the eye has somewhere to rest. Any floral teapot pattern works if jasmine is not familiar as a subject.

Keep the quilt’s colors muted compared to the teacups so the cups stay the clear subject.

Palette: Rose Pink,Sage Green,Titanium White,Raw Umber

A soft focus checklist from couple sketchbook ideas can help you plan several small quiet scenes like this one before committing paint to canvas.

Stack the books first as a simple pile of three or four rectangles in varied, muted colors, using a palette knife to keep the edges slightly rough rather than perfectly straight, which suits the loose feel of the whole piece. Vary the stack’s height on each side slightly so it does not read as too neat or staged.

Place the two pairs of reading glasses across the top book, overlapping slightly, with a few confident thin dark lines for the frames and small ovals of white highlight on the lenses to suggest glass. The place this goes wrong is making the lenses too solid and opaque: a lens should look like you can almost see through it, so keep that highlight soft and let some of the book color show beneath.

If the glasses look flat, add a thin cast shadow beneath each pair falling onto the book cover. A folded bookmark tucked between the pages adds a nice extra detail without much extra work.

Keep the color palette of the books muted so the glasses’ thin lines stay the clearest shapes on the canvas.

Palette: Burgundy,Sage Green,Raw Umber,Titanium White

Paint the fridge door first as one flat, pale surface, slightly cooler than the rest of the kitchen colors so the warm note and bowl of fruit stand out clearly against it. A ten-minute version stops there, with just the note and its small drawn heart; a forty-minute version adds a second note or a magnet shape beside it for more to look at.

Block the note itself as a small pale rectangle, then use the tip of a small brush loaded with burgundy or rose pink to paint a simple, slightly imperfect heart on it, since a too-perfect heart looks printed rather than drawn by hand. Keep the handwriting beneath it as a few loose, wavy lines rather than real letters.

Build the bowl of clementines beside the note as a cluster of warm orange circles with a touch of sage green for a leaf or two, which balances the cooler fridge door with a warm note of color.

If the heart looks too stiff, go over it once more freehand without lifting the brush fully.

Palette: Burgundy,Cadmium Orange,Sage Green,Titanium White

Keep both figures simplified from the start, soft rounded shapes for the bodies and loosely suggested clothing, since detailed faces would pull focus from the slow turn of the dance itself. Place them slightly off center in the room so there is space around them for the floor and a little furniture, which makes the room feel lived in rather than staged around the couple.

Paint the record player as a simple dark rectangle with a thin circle on top for the spinning record, and a small curved line for the needle arm. A warm lamp glow nearby, blocked in with soft yellow blended into the surrounding wall color, gives the whole scene its quiet evening feeling.

If the figures look too stiff standing together, loosen their outlines with a dry brush dragged lightly along one side, which blurs the edge just enough to suggest gentle movement. A record player can be swapped for a simple radio if that is easier to find as reference.

Keep the lamp’s glow the warmest color in the room to draw the eye there first.

Palette: Naples Yellow,Raw Umber,Burgundy,Payne’s Grey

Paint the two coats on their hooks first, one taller and one shorter, hanging at slightly different angles so they feel like they were just hung up rather than arranged. Use a palette knife to drag a bit of texture into the heavier coat’s fabric, which contrasts nicely with the smoother wall behind it.

Place the dog sitting or lying beneath the coats as a simple, compact shape, built from a few confident strokes rather than careful fur detail; a dry brush dragged lightly over the edges of the dog’s body afterward softens the outline into something that reads as fur rather than a hard shape. Keep the dog’s expression simple, just a dark dot or two for the eyes, so it stays endearing without needing real detail work.

If the dog looks flat against the floor, add a soft shadow beneath it in a cooler grey tone. Any breed works here, and a cat curled by the door is just as good a swap if that suits your reference better.

Let the warmest color in the scene be the dog itself, drawing the eye to it first.

Palette: Burnt Umber,Sage Green,Payne’s Grey,Naples Yellow

Set the table first with two simple place settings, plates and cutlery blocked in as flat shapes with a palette knife, keeping them loose rather than precisely drawn so the focus stays on the flowers between them. Decide whether the light comes from a window to one side or overhead, since that choice decides which side of the jar and plates carries the highlight.

Build the jar of peonies as one generous mass of soft pink and cream, using a loaded brush and working from the darker base of the flowers up into the lighter, warmer tips where the light catches them. A few sage green leaves tucked around the jar’s base break up the pink mass and tie the flowers to the table setting below.

If the peonies feel too solid and heavy, soften a few edges with a dry brush pulled gently across the dried paint later, or while it’s still wet for a softer blend immediately. Any full, round flower works in place of peonies if that is easier to find.

Keep the two place settings simple so the jar of flowers stays the clear center of the painting.

Palette: Rose Pink,Titanium White,Sage Green,Naples Yellow

Block the doorway and its shadowed overhang first in a deep, cool tone, since that darker frame is what makes the wet street beyond it feel bright by comparison. Paint the street outside as a loose, reflective grey-blue with a few vertical streaks for rain and soft smudges of warm light reflected from unseen cafe windows.

Lean the two umbrellas together just inside the doorway, one slightly taller, their closed shapes simple curved triangles in rose pink and burgundy. The place this scene usually goes wrong is making the rain outside and the umbrellas inside the same value, which flattens the whole composition: keep the doorway and umbrellas noticeably darker and warmer than the wet street beyond.

If the rain streaks look too mechanical, soften a few with a dry brush dragged once lightly across them. A single umbrella and a coat works as a swap if two umbrellas are hard to picture together.

Finish with a few warm light reflections pooling on the pavement just outside the doorway.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Burgundy,Rose Pink,Naples Yellow

Decide where the rain falls from before anything else: a single light, overcast sky above means the umbrella’s shadow should fall consistently across both figures beneath it, which is the detail that sells the whole gesture. Block the sky and bus stop shelter first in soft, cool greys so the warmer figures beneath the umbrella stand out clearly once they go in.

Paint both figures as simple, close silhouettes, keeping faces minimal and letting the angle of the umbrella itself, tilted toward her, do the storytelling instead of expressions. A few thin streaks of rain falling just outside the umbrella’s shelter reinforce how dry the small space beneath it feels by contrast.

If the umbrella looks flat, add a highlight along its ribs with a thin line of lighter color and a darker cast shadow on the fabric beneath each rib. A bus stop sign or bench nearby fills extra space if the composition feels too empty.

Keep the area directly under the umbrella the warmest, most sheltered-feeling part of the canvas.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Burgundy,Rose Pink,Titanium White

Build the riverside bench first with a few simple wooden planks, then set the picnic basket on top as a rounded woven shape blocked in with a palette knife for texture rather than painting individual wicker strands. A ten-minute version stops with the basket and bottle; a forty-minute version adds the river behind with a few horizontal strokes of blue-green and a reflected highlight or two.

Paint the bottle of lemonade beside the basket as a tall, narrow shape with a warm yellow fill and a cool highlight down one side to suggest glass. Checked cloth draped over the basket’s edge, painted with a few quick crossed lines rather than a full pattern, adds a nice picnic detail without much extra work.

If the river behind starts pulling too much focus, soften its colors and keep the brushstrokes mostly horizontal and calm so it stays background rather than subject. A thermos works as a swap for the lemonade bottle if that fits your kitchen better.

Keep the basket and bottle the warmest, most detailed part of the scene.

Palette: Raw Umber,Naples Yellow,Sage Green,Titanium White

Center the plate first as a simple pale circle, then place the split pomegranate just off center on it so the composition does not feel too symmetrical and stiff. Paint the pomegranate’s outer skin in a deep burgundy-red, then work the glistening seeds inside with small dabs of brighter rose and crimson, leaving tiny flecks of white between them to suggest the wet shine of the seeds catching light.

Place the two spoons resting against the plate’s edge as simple curved metal shapes, a thin white highlight along one edge of each to suggest their shine. The place this piece usually goes wrong is overworking every seed individually until the fruit looks mushy: stop once a handful of distinct dabs suggest the texture and let the eye fill in the rest.

If the pomegranate looks too flat, deepen the shadow where the two halves meet with a touch of Payne’s grey mixed into the burgundy. Any halved citrus fruit works as a swap if pomegranate is out of season.

Keep the spoons simple so the fruit stays the clear star of the plate.

Palette: Burgundy,Cadmium Red,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey

For more small kitchen still life practice before tackling this one, the ideas in still life oil painting for beginners cover similar fruit and tabletop setups.

Paint the birch trunk first with its pale, cool bark and a few horizontal dark marks for its characteristic striped texture, using a small brush so the marks stay crisp against the softer snow around it. Keep the trunk slightly off center in the canvas so there is room for snow and a hint of winter forest on either side.

Carve the heart into the bark with a palette knife edge or the back of a brush handle scraped through wet paint, which removes a thin line of color and reveals the canvas or an underlayer beneath, reading convincingly as a carved mark rather than a painted outline. If scraping feels risky, a thin dark line painted carefully with a small brush works nearly as well.

Build the snow around the base of the trunk with thick, textured white dragged on with a palette knife, and a few soft pine shapes in sage green blurred into the background to suggest a snowy park without overworking them. The place this goes wrong is a heart that looks too neat and stamped: let the scraped line wobble slightly, since real carved bark never comes out perfectly even.

Finish with one or two initials beside the heart only if you want them, kept small and rough.

You Will Need

• palette knife for scraping

Palette: Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Sage Green,Burnt Umber

Set the eye level at platform height, looking slightly up at the train window, which makes the gap between the two figures, her inside and him on the platform, feel real and a little bittersweet. Block the train itself as a long, simple shape in deep blue or grey, with her window as the one lit, warmer rectangle along its side.

Paint her figure small and soft inside the window frame, one hand raised in a simple wave, while his figure on the platform stays similarly simple, perhaps a hand half raised in return. A few quick horizontal streaks of lighter color along the train’s body suggest motion starting, as if the train is just beginning to pull away.

If the two figures feel disconnected, keep their raised hands at roughly the same height across the canvas, which visually ties them together even across the gap. A bus or a car window works as a swap for the train if that suits your scene better.

Keep her window the brightest spot on the canvas so the eye finds her first.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Naples Yellow,Rose Pink,Titanium White

Paint the falling snow and darkening sky first as a soft blue-grey gradient, since getting that quiet evening light right before adding the warmer porch elements makes the whole scene feel colder and cozier by contrast. Block the porch railing and a hint of roofline as simple dark shapes framing the two figures.

Build the couple seated close together under one shared blanket as a single soft rounded mass rather than two separate figures, which immediately reads as closeness without needing detail. The blanket itself in rose pink or burgundy with a few loose plaid lines dragged across it ties their colors together as one shape against the cooler porch and sky.

If the falling snow looks too even and mechanical, vary the size of the white dabs and cluster a few more thickly near the porch light. A mug of something warm held between them adds a nice extra detail without much more work.

Keep the blanket the warmest shape on the canvas against the cool evening around it.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Burgundy,Titanium White,Rose Pink

Lay the snow field in first as a large, mostly empty plane of cool white and pale blue-grey, since this piece lives or dies on how convincing that open snow looks before anything else is added. Use a palette knife to press texture into the snow unevenly, keeping it smoother in the distance and rougher near the viewer, which also helps the perspective read correctly as the ground recedes toward the cabin.

Add the two sets of footprints next with small, repeated dabs of a darker blue-grey, spacing them so they clearly belong to two different strides walking side by side rather than one behind the other. The cabin itself only needs a simple dark shape with one warm, lit window, which becomes the one point of warmth the whole cold scene leads toward.

If the footprints look too uniform and stamped, vary their spacing and size slightly as they recede into the distance. A forest cabin can become a cottage or barn if that suits your reference better.

Keep that one lit window the single warmest color on the entire canvas.

Palette: Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Naples Yellow,Sage Green

Crop the scene close, just hands, a scarf and a hint of coat collar, rather than a full figure, which keeps the gesture itself the whole subject of the small canvas. Block the coat and collar first in a muted tone, then build the scarf as one soft looping shape in burgundy or sage green, painted with a loaded brush so the wool’s texture comes through in the visible brushstrokes.

Add the hands tucking the scarf as simple, softly lit shapes, keeping fingers suggested rather than carefully drawn, since overly detailed hands at this scale tend to look stiff rather than tender. A frosty morning light, cool and pale, works best coming from one side so the scarf catches a soft highlight along its folds.

If the hands look awkward, simplify them further into rounded, generalized shapes rather than adding more detail to fix them. A hat being adjusted works as a swap for the scarf if that fits your scene better.

Keep the scarf’s color the warmest note against the cool, frosty light around it.

Palette: Burgundy,Sage Green,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White

Paint the window and whatever view sits beyond it first, kept soft and simplified, whether that is a night street, a garden, or just a wash of dusky color, since it needs to stay quieter than the table in front of it. Block the two wine glasses next as tall, narrow shapes with a dab of deep red or white wine inside each, a thin highlight of pure white down one side of every glass to suggest the curve of real glass.

Place the candle between the two glasses last, a small warm flame with a soft halo blended outward using a dry brush, which should be the warmest, brightest point on the whole canvas. This is a natural companion piece to the balcony scene earlier in this list, so painting both back to back lets you compare how the same props read in two different settings.

If the glasses look flat, deepen the shadow on their far side and keep the highlight thin and precise rather than broad. A single flower in a small vase can stand in for the candle if an open flame is not practical to reference closely.

Keep the window view the quietest, least detailed part of the painting.

What to Do Next

Pick whichever quiet moment matches tonight, pour the colors onto your palette, and start with the largest shape first, the table, the snow, the sky, before any of the small details go on top. A small canvas and a limited palette are all this list really asks of you, so there is nothing stopping you from finishing one before the evening is over.

Frequently Asked Questions

What oil paint colors do I need for a love painting series like this?

A small core palette covers nearly every idea here: titanium white, a burgundy or alizarin crimson, rose pink, naples yellow, sage green and payne’s grey. Mixing from these six keeps every canvas in the same warm, muted family without buying extra tubes for each scene.

How do I keep faces simple in a love painting without them looking unfinished?

Turn the face away, down, or partly into shadow so detail is never expected there in the first place. A soft, generalized shape with one or two small marks for features reads as intentional and quiet rather than incomplete, especially when the hands or gesture nearby carry more detail.

Can I paint these ideas on canvas board instead of stretched canvas?

Yes, canvas board works just as well for every idea in this list and costs less while you practice. It takes oil paint the same way stretched canvas does, so none of the techniques here, scraping, palette knife texture or dry brushing, need any adjustment.

How long does a small oil love painting like this take to dry?

Touch-dry usually takes about one to two weeks depending on how thickly the paint was applied, with thin, palette-knife areas drying faster than thick impasto passages. Full curing through the paint layer can take several weeks longer, so handle the edges carefully until then.

What if I only have acrylic paint, not oil, for these ideas?

Every idea here translates to acrylic by working a little faster, since acrylic dries within minutes rather than staying workable for hours. Keep a water spray nearby to extend blending time, and use a palette knife the same way for the thicker, textured passages.
