29 Lighthouse Illustration Ideas of Winter Storms, Icy Coasts and Snowy Cliffs

A lighthouse illustration earns its keep in winter: the red stripe against grey sky, the ice on the rail, the one small light holding against a whole storm. Every scene here gives you a single tower, one weather or life detail, and a sea that does the heavy lifting on mood.

You will find calm coasts and wild ones, keepers’ cottages and lifeboat stations, frozen bays and pink dawn skies, all built for a small canvas and a loaded brush. Pick whichever light calls to you tonight and keep the rest for the next grey afternoon.

Start with a red and white lighthouse set on a snowy cliff above a grey sea, the classic opening scene for this whole list. Block in the sky and sea first with a flat brush, keeping the horizon line low so the cliff and tower dominate the canvas, then rough in the cliff shape with titanium white warmed slightly with yellow ochre.

Paint the tower as a simple tapered cylinder, laying the white band first and letting it dry enough to stay clean before you drag on the red stripes with a small flat brush. Check the width of each stripe against the width of the tower itself rather than guessing: most real lighthouses use bands roughly as wide as the tower is at that point, and eyeballing this ratio keeps the whole shape from looking lopsided.

The lantern room at the top is where beginners rush and lose the structure, so block it as a simple dark square before adding the glass glint. If your canvas is small, keep the cliff edge soft and let the grey sea do most of the work with horizontal strokes.

Finish with one bright white highlight on the sea-facing side of the tower to catch the light, and stop there.

Waves crashing over an iced-over pier lighthouse give you the most movement in this whole set, so plan the composition before you touch paint. Sketch the tower off-center on the canvas with thin paint, then build the pier as a low dark line running toward it, narrower at the horizon to push depth.

Work the sea next, since the spray needs to sit on top of wet water paint while it is still workable. Load a stiff flat brush with titanium white and drag it upward in short flicks where the wave meets the pier, letting some white catch the tower’s base too.

If the spray ends up looking like a solid white blob instead of flying water, scrape a few strokes back with the brush handle or a palette knife edge to break the shape into separate streaks. This single trick saves most wave paintings that go wrong at this stage.

No palette knife on hand: an old credit card edge or the back of a butter knife works just as well for that scraping motion. Keep the sky quiet and pale so the wave stays the loudest thing in the painting.

You Will Need

• palette knife (or an old card for scraping)

Palette: Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Prussian Blue,Ivory Black

Try adding a thin glaze of Prussian Blue over the dried spray afterward to push it back into the scene, so the whitest foam reads as the closest and brightest point.

Set a lighthouse keeper’s cottage beside its tower with a snowy garden fence running in front, a quieter scene after all that spray. Block the cottage as a simple rectangle with a steep triangular roof, placing it slightly smaller and lower than the lighthouse so the eye still reads the tower as the main subject.

Paint the snow on the roof and fence top with thick, almost dry paint applied with the flat edge of the brush, letting the white sit proud of the surface for texture. The fence itself can be a few quick vertical dashes of dark brown, spaced unevenly so it does not look like a ruler line.

Windows are where this cottage usually goes wrong: too large and it looks like a dollhouse, too small and it disappears. Keep each pane roughly a third the width of the whole wall and add one small warm yellow dab inside for a lit window against the cold palette.

If you want a quicker version, skip the fence entirely and let snow drifts stand in for the garden edge instead.

A lighthouse on a rocky islet coated in winter ice turns the rock itself into half the painting, so give it real attention. Lay the sea in first, then build the islet with angular, broken brushstrokes rather than one smooth mass, since rock reads as rock through its jagged edges.

Here is where eye level matters: place the horizon low on the canvas and look up slightly at the tower, which makes the islet feel exposed and the lighthouse feel taller against the sky. A higher horizon with a downward view flattens the drama this subject needs.

Paint the ice coating as pale blue-white strokes that follow the direction the rock falls, catching the cold light from one side only. Keep that light source consistent across the whole islet, rock and tower alike, so the ice looks like one storm’s work rather than random white patches.

Swap a cool violet-grey for the shadow side of the rocks if you are out of Payne’s Grey, since most winter palettes already lean that way.

Bring a figure into the scene now with a woman walking a dog on a snowy coast path toward a lighthouse in the distance. Place the tower small near the horizon first, since everything else in this painting is built to lead the eye toward it.

Paint the path as a pale curving band across the lower third of the canvas, then add the woman and dog as simple silhouettes, no more than a few brushstrokes each: a coat shape, a scarf dab of color, four quick dark legs for the dog. Getting the dog’s size right against the woman solves most of this idea’s problems, so compare the dog’s shoulder height to her knee before committing to the shape.

Keep both figures small against the landscape rather than detailed, which actually reads as more convincing at a glance than an overworked face or paws. A single red scarf or hat on the woman gives you a second warm accent to answer the lighthouse stripe.

For a faster version, drop the dog and keep just the walking figure heading toward the light.

A lighthouse at sunrise with frost on the dune grass is the first warm-light scene in this list, a good change of pace after so much grey. Lay the sky first with soft horizontal bands of pink, pale orange and lilac, blending them wet into wet so no hard edges interrupt the glow.

The light source here sits low on the horizon just beside the tower, so every shadow, including the shaded side of the lighthouse and the dune grass, falls away from that point. Getting this consistent is what sells a sunrise rather than a flat, evenly lit tower.

Paint the dune grass with a fan brush or the very tip of a round, flicking upward in clusters rather than single blades, then touch a little white and pale pink along the tips where frost catches the first light. Too many even blades in a row looks like a lawn, so vary the height and angle of each cluster.

If a fan brush is not in your kit, an old toothbrush dragged lightly across the canvas gives a similar broken texture for the grass tips.

You Will Need

• fan brush (or an old toothbrush)

Move to a Great Lakes lighthouse cased in icicles after a storm, one of the most dramatic subjects on this list and worth slowing down for. Block the tower shape first in its base color, let it dry a little, then build up the ice coating over it in layers rather than one pass, since real ice reads as depth, not a flat coat of white.

The hands-on trick here is dry brushing: load a stiff flat brush with very little pale blue-white paint, wipe most of it off on a rag, then drag it lightly across the tower so the texture of the canvas shows through in broken streaks. This gives the icicle casing a crusted, uneven look instead of a smooth glaze.

For actual icicles hanging from the gallery rail, use a fine round brush and pull single downward strokes, tapering the pressure as you lift off so each one narrows to a point. Keep them irregular in length, never a neat row.

If dry brushing feels tricky at first, scrape a loaded brush sideways with a palette knife instead for a similar broken edge.

• palette knife

Set a lighthouse on a frozen bay with ice floes drifting around its base, a scene that leans on pattern as much as on the tower itself. Paint the water first as a dark, cold blue-grey, then lay the ice floes on top as irregular flattened shapes in varying sizes, never the same oval repeated across the bay.

Vary each floe’s edge: some sharp and angular, some rounded and worn, so the surface reads as broken ice rather than a tiled pattern. A touch of pale blue shadow on the underside of each floe where it meets the dark water gives them weight and keeps them from floating flat on the canvas.

The lighthouse itself can sit smaller here, since the ice pattern is doing real work to hold the composition, so keep its detail simple: a basic tapered shape with one or two stripes is enough.

Once this version works, try it again later with the floes packed tight against the shore and only a thin channel of open water near the tower, a good variation for a second painting.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Cerulean Blue,Cadmium Red

A snowstorm sweeping past a tall stone lighthouse asks for restraint, since the whole point is that you barely see the tower at all. Paint the background first as a soft, almost featureless grey-white, then build the lighthouse as a darker shape emerging from it, softened at every edge rather than outlined.

Snow in a storm never falls straight down in a painting; it streaks sideways, so load a dry round brush with white and drag short diagonal flicks across the whole canvas once the lighthouse is roughly in place. Keep the direction consistent, as if one wind is driving everything.

This is the one idea on the list where losing detail is the goal, not a mistake, so resist the urge to sharpen the tower’s edges at the end. If the storm streaks start looking too uniform, vary their length and spacing with a second lighter pass.

For a quicker ten-minute version, skip the streak layer and simply paint the lighthouse soft-edged against flat grey, letting atmosphere alone suggest the storm.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Ivory Black,Cadmium Red

Switch styles now with a squat white lighthouse in Iceland standing above snowy black rocks, a shape very different from the tall towers earlier in this list. Block the black volcanic rock first with a mix of ivory black and a touch of blue, keeping its surface rough and varied rather than one flat mass.

Measure the lighthouse itself before you commit: this style is usually wider at the base relative to its height than a classic tower, closer to a short cylinder with a small lantern cap, so compare its height to roughly twice its width rather than the taller four or five to one ratio you might default to.

Dust the black rock with small dabs of white snow sitting unevenly across the surface, heavier in the crevices and thin on the exposed high points, since that is how real snow settles on rough rock. Keep the sky pale and flat behind it so the black rock and white snow carry the contrast.

A butter-colored warm white instead of pure titanium white can make the lighthouse glow slightly against all that cold black and grey.

Palette: Ivory Black,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Naples Yellow

Frame the next scene from indoors: a lighthouse seen through a cottage window with a teapot resting on the sill, a cozy counterpoint to the storms around it. Paint the window frame first as a simple dark rectangle crossing the canvas, since this frame is what tells the eye you are looking out rather than standing on the cliff.

The glass itself should look slightly cooler and softer than the scene outside it, so once the lighthouse and sea are blocked in beyond the frame, glaze a thin wash of pale grey-blue over just that area to suggest glass without losing the view.

Paint the teapot on the sill last, since it sits closest to you and needs the sharpest edges and the warmest color in the whole painting, a good foil to the cold blues outside. Keep it simple: an oval body, a curved spout, one highlight.

If you do not have a teapot reference handy, a mug works just as well and paints even faster.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Cadmium Red,Raw Sienna

A lighthouse on a snowy headland with seabirds riding the wind brings movement back into the sky after the quiet window scene. Block the headland and tower first, then turn to the birds last, since they need to sit convincingly in front of sky that is already dry enough not to drag.

Each bird is just a few strokes: a shallow curved line for the body, two thin angled strokes for wings held steady against the wind rather than flapping. Vary their positions and sizes across the sky so they read as a flock caught mid-glide rather than a repeated stamp.

Keep most birds small and pale against the sky, but let one sit closer and slightly larger in the foreground for scale and depth. This single size contrast does more for the composition than adding extra birds.

If wind direction feels tricky to judge, angle every bird’s wingtip the same way as the snow on the headland grass, since both should answer to one steady gale.

Palette: Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Cerulean Blue,Cadmium Red

Give the base of the tower some life with a striped lighthouse and a few seals resting on icy rocks below it. Paint the rocks and ice first, then place the seals as simple grey-brown ovals lying along the rock line, heads lifted slightly with one small curved line each.

Group the seals in twos and threes rather than spacing them evenly, since real haul-outs cluster unevenly around the warmest or most sheltered spots on the rock. Two seals touching and one slightly apart reads far more natural than three lined up like beads.

Keep their coloring muted against the icy rock so the striped lighthouse above still reads as the brightest, most structured shape in the painting. A single dark eye dot and a pale belly highlight is all the detail each seal needs at this size.

For a faster version, paint just one seal close to the base of the tower and let it stand in for the whole colony.

Palette: Raw Umber,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Red

Stretch the composition out with a lighthouse at the end of a long snowy breakwater, a strong lesson in one-point perspective at a manageable scale. Draw the breakwater first as two converging lines running from the bottom corners of the canvas toward a vanishing point near the lighthouse, keeping that point just above the horizon.

This convergence is what makes the breakwater feel long: if the lines stay too parallel, the whole walkway looks short and flat no matter how small you paint the tower at the end. Check the angle against a ruler held up to your reference if the perspective feels off.

Paint the breakwater’s snow cover with broken, uneven strokes rather than a flat white band, since real snow catches and drifts unevenly along a stone path. Darker stone should peek through in patches, especially near the edges where wave spray keeps the snow thin.

Place the lighthouse small and bright at the vanishing point, with one warm light at the top to pull the eye all the way down the breakwater to it.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Cadmium Red,Naples Yellow

Bring in a Maine lighthouse with snow on the pine trees behind it, the first scene in this list with real forest alongside the sea. Paint the pines as simple dark triangular clusters behind and beside the tower, varying their height so the tree line reads as natural rather than a row of identical shapes.

Add snow to the pines with small dabs of white flicked onto the dark green with the corner of a flat brush, heavier near the top of each tree and sparser lower down where branches shelter each other. This single detail does more to sell “snow-laden” than painting thick white caps on every branch tip.

Keep the lighthouse itself pale and simple against the dark pines, since the contrast between the cold white tower and the deep green-black trees is what carries this composition. A narrow band of grey sea between the pines and the rocks grounds the whole scene.

If pine green feels heavy, mix in a touch of Payne’s Grey to cool it and keep it from fighting the winter palette.

Palette: Sap Green,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Cadmium Red

Paint a Norwegian lighthouse on a fjord rock with a red boathouse beside it, a chance to work with steep, dramatic terrain. Block the fjord walls first as large simple planes of cool grey and blue-violet, since fjord cliffs read through flat color shifts more than detailed texture at this scale.

Set the lighthouse on a small rocky outcrop jutting from the water, smaller than the cliffs behind it to keep the sense of scale, then add the red boathouse at the waterline as a simple low rectangle with a pitched roof. That red roof should be the second warmest note in the painting after the lighthouse stripe, nothing competing with either.

Fjord water often sits glass-calm even in winter, so paint it with smooth horizontal strokes and let a soft reflection of the cliff and boathouse color drop straight down into it. Breaking that reflection with just one or two short horizontal disturbances keeps it from looking like a mirror.

Working from a photo of a specific fjord helps here if you want accurate rock color; otherwise blue-grey and violet-grey mixes carry the mood fine.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Dioxazine Violet,Cadmium Red,Titanium White

Paint a lighthouse in fog with snow drifting across the path, a mood piece built almost entirely on soft edges. Start with the whole canvas toned a pale neutral grey before any shape goes in, since fog paintings work best when nothing starts from bare white canvas.

Build the lighthouse with very little contrast against that grey, just enough value shift to read as a shape, and keep every edge soft by blending slightly into the fog rather than stopping cleanly. The path in the foreground can stay a touch clearer than the tower to give the eye one sharp anchor point in an otherwise hazy scene.

Drift the snow across the path with short diagonal flicks of pale grey-white, lighter and less frequent as they move toward the tower, since fog should swallow detail the farther back it sits. This falloff in clarity is what separates a true fog scene from a plain grey sky.

If the whole thing starts to look flat, add one slightly warmer grey patch near the lighthouse’s light to suggest it is still cutting weakly through the mist.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Naples Yellow,Ivory Black

Return to warm light with a lighthouse against a pink winter sunset over the sea, a companion piece to the earlier sunrise but with a cooler, lower sun. Lay the sky first in broad horizontal bands, pink nearest the horizon fading up into lavender and pale blue, blending while the paint stays wet so no hard lines interrupt the gradient.

Silhouette the lighthouse almost entirely dark against that glow rather than painting its daytime colors, since a true sunset flattens most local color into shape and edge alone. Only the very top of the lantern room needs a touch of warm light catching it, where the setting sun hits highest.

Paint the sea beneath as a darker mirror of the sky, picking up the pink and lavender in soft horizontal strokes with a few darker ripples breaking the reflection. Keep the horizon crisp even though everything above and below it stays soft, since that one clean line holds the whole composition together.

One bright warm dab for the lighthouse’s own lit lamp gives you a second light source to balance against the sinking sun.

Palette: Quinacridone Rose,Dioxazine Violet,Ivory Black,Cadmium Orange

Move right inside the tower for a lighthouse lantern room with frosted glass and a winter sea view beyond it, a tighter, more unusual framing than the wide coastal scenes earlier. Build the lantern room’s iron framework first as a simple grid of dark lines across the canvas, since this structure is what makes the setting read instantly as the inside of a lighthouse.

Paint the glass panes next with a cooler, slightly cloudy white-blue mix rather than clean transparent glass, suggesting frost without drawing individual ice crystals. One or two panes can stay a touch clearer so a sliver of the sea and sky outside shows through, grounding the whole scene.

The lamp mechanism itself, whether a simple lens shape or just a glowing central form, should carry the warmest, brightest paint in the picture, since everything else here is cold glass and colder sea. Keep its shape simple: a rounded form with one strong highlight is enough.

If the ironwork grid feels fiddly, loosen it: a few confident dark lines read better than many careful, stiff ones.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Naples Yellow,Cerulean Blue

Bring a small crowd into the scene with a family in bright raincoats watching storm waves from a lighthouse hill. Paint the sea and lighthouse first, since the waves need to feel genuinely rough before the figures are added to react to them.

Place the family as a loose cluster of simple silhouettes on the hill, each one just a coat shape and a head, no faces needed at this distance. The real work is in the raincoats: pick two or three bright colors, yellow, red, maybe a blue, and keep each one a flat confident dab rather than a blended shape, since that flatness is what reads as waterproof fabric against the muted storm palette.

Stagger the figures’ heights and spacing rather than lining them up evenly, and angle one or two bodies slightly forward as if leaning into the wind. This small variation in pose does more for the sense of weather than any extra detail on the sea.

For a simpler version, paint just one figure in a single bright coat and let that lone silhouette carry the human scale.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Yellow,Cadmium Red,Titanium White

Settle the composition low to the ground with a lighthouse and a frozen tidal pool sitting in front of it. Paint the pool first as a flat, pale, slightly grey-blue shape low on the canvas, since its stillness and reflection are the whole point of this idea.

Let the lighthouse and sky reflect faintly into that frozen surface with a few soft vertical strokes dragged straight down from the tower’s base, keeping the reflection fainter and cooler than the real tower above it. A thin crack line or two across the ice, painted with a fine brush in a slightly darker grey, convinces the eye this is frozen rather than simply wet.

Surround the pool’s edge with dark, uneven rock shapes to frame it and keep the flat ice from reading as empty space. This framing is often the detail beginners skip, and the pool loses its sense of place without it.

If painting a convincing reflection feels tricky, simplify it to a soft pale smear of color rather than a mirrored shape, which still reads as ice at a glance.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Cerulean Blue,Cadmium Red

Return to full storm force with a Brittany lighthouse in a winter gale with flying spray, close in spirit to the iced pier earlier but wilder in motion. Build the sea first with large, sweeping diagonal strokes rather than small careful waves, since a gale needs big gestures across the whole lower canvas to feel convincing.

Set the lighthouse on its rock slightly off-center and lean the whole composition into the direction of the gale, with spray and cloud streaks all pulling one way across the canvas. A painting where the wave direction and the sky’s cloud streaks disagree never quite reads as one coherent storm, so decide the wind direction first and keep everything loyal to it.

Flick spray off the top of the main wave with a dry, half-loaded brush, dragging upward and sideways in the same direction as everything else. Let some of that spray actually cross in front of the lighthouse’s base to really sell the violence of the weather.

Keep the sky dramatic but not overworked: a few fast dark cloud strokes against pale grey is enough.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Prussian Blue,Cadmium Red

Quiet things down again with a lighthouse above a snowy beach marked by a single line of footprints. Paint the beach first as a broad pale plane, slightly warmer than the sky above it, then the lighthouse small on the headland beyond, since this scene depends on a lot of open, calm space around one small human trace.

The footprints are the whole story here, so place them with care: start the line near one bottom corner of the canvas and let it curve gently toward the lighthouse, never running in a dead straight diagonal. Each footprint is just a small darker oval dab, slightly smaller and closer together as the line recedes toward the tower, which also helps the sense of distance.

Keep the sky and sea nearly empty of incident here, since a single line of footprints only reads as a quiet, personal detail if nothing else in the painting competes for attention.

If you want a warmer version next time, try this same composition at the pink sunset light described earlier rather than the flat grey daylight.

Palette: Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Raw Umber,Cadmium Red

Add grazing life to the clifftop with a lighthouse on a cliff where sheep graze a frosty pasture nearby. Paint the grass first with a cool, slightly grey-green mix rather than a bright summer green, then frost the tips with short dry-brushed white strokes across the highest points of the field.

Place the sheep as simple rounded white shapes with small dark legs and a darker head dab, clustering two or three together and setting one apart grazing alone. Keep every sheep roughly the same size relative to the lighthouse in the distance, since mismatched scale between animals and tower is the fastest way to break the illusion of real distance on a clifftop.

Vary each sheep’s pose slightly, head down for grazing, head up and alert for one, so the small flock reads as a living moment rather than a stamped pattern repeated across the field.

If sheep feel fiddly at this scale, simplify each one to a plain oval with four short dark legs; from this distance that reads perfectly well.

Palette: Sap Green,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Red

Slow right down with a lighthouse reflected in a calm icy harbor, a near-still composition after the gale and the gusty headland. Paint the tower and its surroundings above the waterline first, then flip the same shapes directly below the waterline for the reflection, keeping the colors slightly muted and cooler than the originals.

A true calm-water reflection is not a perfect mirror, so break it gently with one or two thin horizontal strokes of a slightly different tone dragged across the reflected shape, suggesting a faint ripple from drifting harbor ice rather than glass-flat water. Too clean a reflection can look more like a mistake than a calm day.

Scatter a few small pale ice fragments floating near the harbor edge with quick, irregular dabs, keeping them smaller and fewer than the dramatic ice floe scene elsewhere in this list, since this harbor is meant to feel settled rather than choked with ice.

If blending a convincing reflection feels slow, work both the tower and its reflection side by side rather than finishing one completely before starting the other, matching color and value as you go.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Cadmium Red,Cerulean Blue

Pair the lighthouse with its working neighbor in a lighthouse and lifeboat station under fresh snow. Block the lifeboat station first as a simple low building with a large dark boat-bay opening, since that opening is the detail that instantly identifies the building’s purpose without extra signage or labeling.

Set the lighthouse rising behind or beside it, taller and narrower to keep the two structures reading as clearly different in both shape and role. Fresh snow should sit evenly across both roofs, so paint it with the same thick, slightly dry white strokes on each, tying the two buildings together visually even though their shapes differ.

A faint path of disturbed snow leading from the station’s boat-bay down toward the water suggests recent activity, a nice quiet storytelling detail without needing any figures at all. Keep that path narrow and slightly uneven rather than a clean paved line.

If two full buildings feel like too much for one sitting, simplify the lifeboat station to just its dark bay opening glimpsed at the edge of the canvas.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Cadmium Red,Raw Umber

Zoom in close for a lighthouse with a red door half blocked by a snowdrift, a detail shot that trades the wide coastal view for something more intimate. Paint the base of the tower large across the canvas, with the red door as the single strongest color note, since everything else here stays in cool whites and greys to let that door hold the composition.

Build the snowdrift as a soft, rounded mound piled unevenly against the door’s lower half, thicker on one side than the other the way real drifted snow settles against a wall in wind. Dry-brushed white over a slightly warmer grey underlayer gives the drift some roundness rather than a flat white triangle.

Keep the door’s lower edge genuinely obscured, not just touching the snow, since a drift that merely grazes the door loses the sense of a building half-buried by the storm. A little texture scraped into the drift’s surface with a palette knife edge suggests windblown ridges.

For a faster take, drop the texture work and simply paint the drift as a smooth pale mound against the bold red door.

• palette knife

Palette: Cadmium Red,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Raw Umber

Paint a Baltic lighthouse in sea smoke on a freezing morning, the strangest and most atmospheric scene in the set. Sea smoke forms when very cold air meets slightly warmer water, so paint it as thin, wispy white-grey strands rising directly off the sea’s surface rather than a solid fog bank sitting still in the air.

Build the water and sky first in close, muted tones, almost the same value, since sea smoke mornings tend to flatten the whole scene into one soft range of cold color. The lighthouse should emerge just enough through the rising smoke to stay recognizable, its lower half softer and its upper half slightly clearer where the smoke thins with height.

Drag the smoke strands upward with a dry, lightly loaded round brush in short vertical flicks, varying their height so some wisps rise higher than others. Too even a row of identical wisps reads as a pattern rather than genuine rising vapor.

If the smoke effect feels difficult to control, try it over a slightly damp canvas so the white blurs softly into the sea tone beneath it.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Cerulean Blue,Cadmium Red

Close the list from an unusual angle: a lighthouse seen from a ferry deck with a girl in a scarf standing at the rail. Paint the deck railing first as a few confident horizontal and vertical dark lines crossing the lower portion of the canvas, immediately placing the viewer on board rather than on shore.

Set the girl at the rail in profile or three-quarter view, a simple coat shape and a bright scarf color as her one real detail, looking out toward the lighthouse rather than at the viewer. Keep her smaller than she would be in a close portrait, since she is a small human note inside a big winter seascape, not the main subject fighting the tower for attention.

Place the lighthouse itself in the middle distance beyond the rail, slightly hazy compared to the crisp foreground railing, which helps sell the sense of real distance across open water from a moving boat. A little spray or mist rising where the ferry’s bow would be, just hinted at the canvas edge, finishes the sense of motion.

If a full figure feels ambitious to end on, simplify her to a coat and scarf glimpsed from behind, hands resting on the rail.

What to Do Next

Pick one lighthouse, load a small canvas, and let the sea and sky do most of the talking around that one bright stripe. Start with the simplest cliff scene if this is new territory, or jump straight into a storm or a fog if you already know your way around a loaded brush.

Frequently Asked Questions

What oil colors do I actually need for a winter lighthouse painting?

A basic winter seascape runs on titanium white, Payne’s grey, cadmium red, and one blue such as cerulean or Prussian blue. Add raw umber or sienna for rock and wood, and a yellow for warm light accents.

How do I keep the red and white stripes from looking messy?

Let the white base coat dry a little before adding red bands, and use a small flat brush with steady pressure in one pass rather than scrubbing back and forth. A thin strip of painter’s tape also gives a cleaner edge if you prefer crisp stripes.

What is the easiest lighthouse illustration idea to start with?

The red and white lighthouse on a snowy cliff is the simplest full scene in this list, since it uses broad flat shapes and only one clear light direction. It is a good first attempt before tackling waves, fog, or reflections.

How small a canvas works for these winter lighthouse scenes?

An eight by ten inch canvas suits every idea here comfortably in one sitting. Smaller panels around five by seven also work well for the close-up scenes, such as the red door or the lantern room.

How do I paint convincing snow without it looking flat?

Use thick, slightly dry paint applied with the flat edge of the brush rather than a smooth, watered-down layer. Vary the thickness across the surface and let a little of the underlying cool tone show through in the shadowed hollows.
