Winter watercolor rewards a loose hand more than any other season. Soft grey washes, a scatter of ice blue, a dab of berry red on snow white paper: that is most of the work done before you pick up a brush, and the paper itself does the heaviest lifting as untouched white snow.
Below you will find thirty one small scenes to paint this way, from a single blackbird on a rowan branch to a lane seen through a stone archway. Each one is sized for a single sitting, scroll until something catches your eye and start there.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start with the berry clusters, not the bird: paint loose circles of cadmium red mixed wet into wet so some edges bleed into each other, leaving tiny white paper flecks of frost between them. Add the thin dark branch with a fine brush once the berries have dried, then drop in the blackbird as a near-black silhouette with one warm orange dot for the beak.
The common mistake is making every berry the same perfect circle, which reads as flat and plastic rather than ripe. Vary the sizes and let two or three touch or overlap so the cluster feels alive.
If this is your first time painting berries, try the trick painters use for any clustered subject: compare each berry to its neighbor rather than guessing its size in isolation, and the whole bunch stays in proportion.
Keep a scrap of paper nearby to test how wet your brush is before it touches a berry, since one overloaded drop can flood the whole cluster.
Palette: Cadmium Red,Payne’s Grey,Sap Green,Ivory Black
Lay a pale grey-blue wash across the top two thirds of the paper for the sky, then drop in a slightly darker grey while it is still damp to suggest low winter cloud. Leave the lane itself as bare white paper, only shading its edges with a cool grey-violet so it reads as snow rather than empty space.
Paint the cottage small and simple at the far end of the lane: a pale wall, one warm red-brown roof, two tiny dark windows. Because it sits so far back, it should be the smallest, most compressed shape on the page, which is what pushes the lane into the distance.
The usual mistake is making the cottage too large or too detailed, which flattens the perspective instead of deepening it. Keep it the size of a thumbnail and let a few loose trees along the lane’s edge taper smaller as they recede too.
No red-brown paint on hand works fine, burnt sienna with a touch of red mixed on the palette gives the same warm roof.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Burnt Sienna,Cadmium Red,Titanium White
Paint the window frame first with straight ruled pencil lines, then watercolor, keeping the wood a warm soft brown rather than black so it stays gentle. Inside, wash a warm yellow-orange glow around where the lamp sits, letting it bleed softly into a duskier blue toward the edges of the glass.
Build the lamp itself last in a few confident strokes: a simple shade shape, one warm highlight left as untouched paper. Outside the glass, pile soft white snow along the sill using the white of the paper plus a thin grey-blue shadow line underneath each snow mound to give it weight.
Painters often make the glow too even, which kills the cozy feeling. Keep the warmest, brightest orange close to the lamp and let it cool and darken as it spreads outward across the pane.
This scene pairs nicely with the quieter window studies in these winter junk journal pages if you want more cozy interiors to paint afterward.
Palette: Cadmium Yellow,Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White
Mix the faintest grey-lavender wash for the snowberries, since they stay nearly white and only need a thin shadow line on one side of each round berry to look three dimensional. Paint the thin woody stems and a few sparse leaves in sage green after the berries have dried so the colors stay clean and separate.
The sparrow goes in last, built from soft rounded shapes in warm browns and greys rather than any hard outline, with the chest left paler and the back a touch darker to show the light falling from above. Ink accents for the legs and a single eye give it just enough focus against the loose wash of the shrub.
The usual trap with pale berries is painting them so faint they vanish, so judge your mix against a dry test strip before committing, aiming for a shadow that is visible but still clearly winter-pale.
Lacking a dedicated grey paint, mix Payne’s grey with a touch of violet for a closer, colder snowberry shadow.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Sap Green,Burnt Sienna,Titanium White
Block in the magpie’s body first as two simple shapes, a rounded body and a long tail wedge, painted in flat black with the white chest and shoulder patches left as bare paper. While the black is still slightly damp, drop in a touch of blue-green along the tail and wing edge so it catches that oily iridescent sheen magpies have in real light.
The lawn stays almost entirely white paper, with only a thin cool grey-blue wash for the long shadow the bird casts across it, angled to show where the light is coming from. Keep that shadow soft at the far end and slightly sharper near the magpie’s feet.
A common mistake is painting the whole bird flat black, which loses the iridescent quality entirely. Watch where the light would catch the wing and let a sliver of blue-violet sit right in that spot while the black is still wet.
Finish with fine ink lines for the legs and beak once everything else is fully dry.
Palette: Ivory Black,Prussian Blue,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White
Work the brambles as a loose tangle of curving lines in dark green-brown ink or a fine brush, crossing and looping across the lower half of the page before any color touches the paper. Once the ink is dry, wash a thin icy blue-white over the whole tangle to suggest frost clinging to every thorn and twist.
The dog goes in as a simple warm-toned shape, nose down and low to the ground, painted wet on dry so its edges stay a little crisper than the soft bramble wash behind it. That contrast between a crisp dog and a loose tangled hedge is what makes the scene read clearly.
Painters often draw every single thorn, which turns a loose study into a stiff diagram. Suggest thorns with a handful of short flicked lines rather than drawing each one, and trust the viewer’s eye to fill in the rest.
If you enjoy animals mid-action like this, the winter nature journal ideas have more walks and tracks to work from.
Palette: Sap Green,Burnt Umber,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White
Paint the umbrella as the anchor shape of the whole scene: a simple dome in a muted color, with the ribs suggested by a few straight ink lines radiating from its center point rather than drawn individually in full. Keep the figure beneath it small and loosely brushed, no more than a dark coat shape and two legs, since detail here would fight with the umbrella for attention.
Lay the lane and sky around the figure in soft grey-blue washes while the paper is still damp, so the whole background feels misty and cold compared to the one crisp umbrella shape. This is the moment to think about eye level: set the horizon low, close to the walker’s knees, which makes the sky feel vast and the walk feel long.
The mistake to avoid is placing the figure dead center, which looks static. Push the walker slightly off to one side of the page, giving the empty lane ahead more room to breathe.
No grey paint mixed yet, a touch of orange added to blue neutralizes it quickly on the palette.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Prussian Blue,Burnt Sienna,Titanium White
Paint the geranium blooms first in warm cadmium red, dropping each small petal cluster in wet so the reds bleed softly into each other before adding a touch of darker crimson in the shadowed centers once the first wash sets. The frosted glass behind it is a thin wash of icy blue-white with a dry brush dragged lightly across for that crystalline texture.
Add the windowsill as a simple pale ledge, and bring in the cat last: just the suggestion of a striped tail curling into frame from one side, since showing the whole cat would turn this from a quiet still life into a different picture entirely.
The frost texture is the trickiest part here. If the dry brush drag looks too heavy, lift a little color straight back out with a clean damp brush or a scrunched tissue while it is still wet, which softens it instantly.
Try it ten minutes quick with the geranium and frost alone, or spend forty minutes adding the folded curtain edge and a second smaller bloom for a fuller composition.
You Will Need
- dry brush for frost texture
Palette: Cadmium Red,Alizarin Crimson,Sap Green,Payne’s Grey
Build the conifer branches first as loose overlapping V shapes in dark sage green, dragging the brush so some needles break and spatter at the tips rather than forming a solid clump. While the green is still a little damp, flick in soft white gouache or simply leave flecks of bare paper for clinging snow.
The goldcrest is tiny, so keep it to three or four brushstrokes: an olive-green back, a pale belly, and one bright flick of yellow-orange for its crown stripe, which is the one detail that makes it instantly recognizable as this bird rather than any small green one.
Hiding a small bird inside dense branches often makes it disappear completely. Leave a small pocket of clear space around the goldcrest before painting the needles so it reads clearly against the green once everything settles.
No gouache for the snow flecks, a white gel pen does the same job once the paint is fully dry.
You Will Need
- white gel pen or white gouache
Palette: Sap Green,Hooker’s Green,Cadmium Yellow,Titanium White
For a smaller bird like this, the templates in these watercolor bird tutorials help with getting the proportions right before you commit to paint.
Paint the crab apples as small overlapping circles in a mix of cadmium red and a touch of orange, leaving a tiny white highlight unpainted on each one to suggest the ice glazing its skin. Once dry, add the branch in a confident single stroke of burnt umber, letting it curve naturally rather than sitting perfectly straight.
The shaking off snow moment is about motion, so paint a few loose white specks flying away from the branch using masking fluid applied before you wash in a pale grey-blue sky behind it, then rub the masking fluid away once everything is bone dry to reveal crisp white snow specks mid-fall.
Skipping the masking fluid step, you can also flick clean water onto the still-wet sky wash and dab it with tissue to lift pale blotches instead, a quicker but less crisp version of the same trick.
One tip to use today: angle the branch diagonally across the page rather than horizontally, since a diagonal line always feels more alive and less like a static still life.
You Will Need
- masking fluid
Palette: Cadmium Red,Cadmium Orange,Burnt Umber,Payne’s Grey
Sketch the girl and bicycle lightly in pencil first, keeping both quite simple: a coat shape, a scarf flick, two wheel circles, since this is a scene about mood rather than anatomy. Paint her coat in one confident flat color first, then build the snowy orchard trees behind her as small dark trunk marks topped with soft frosted canopies in grey-green.
A useful proportion check here: the bicycle wheels should sit at roughly the same height as the girl’s knee, and her head should be about one seventh of her total standing height, which keeps the figure from looking either childlike or stretched.
The trees behind her are the easiest place to go wrong by making them all the same size and spacing, which flattens the orchard. Vary the gaps and let a couple of trunks overlap slightly in the distance.
If figures intimidate you, keep this one small and distant in the frame rather than close up, where small proportion slips matter far less.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey,Sap Green,Titanium White
Start with the gate in the foreground, painted dark and slightly rough with dry brush texture so it reads as old weathered wood, since this close dark shape is what will make the distant window glow look so warm by comparison. Leave a generous stretch of white paper for snow between the gate and the cottage.
Paint the cottage wall in a cool pale grey-blue, then drop the window in last as the single warmest, brightest mark in the whole piece, a small square of orange-yellow glow, since everything else in the painting exists to make that one window sing.
If the glow reads flat, try the lifting trick: once the orange wash is dry, dampen a small brush with clean water and gently lift a tiny soft halo around the window’s edge, which pushes the warmth outward into the cold wall.
The winter birds junk journal pages share this same warm window and cold snow pairing if you want more cozy references.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Prussian Blue,Cadmium Yellow,Burnt Umber
Paint both doves as soft rounded puffs rather than sleek bird shapes, since a fluffed up winter dove is almost entirely about that rounded silhouette. Use a pale warm grey-brown for the body, keeping the heads tucked low into the shoulders with barely any neck visible.
The wire they sit on is a single thin confident ink line drawn after the birds are dry, running straight across the page and sagging slightly under their combined weight, a small detail that sells the whole scene. A thin streak of snow balanced along the top of the wire finishes it.
Painting two birds invites the mistake of making them identical twins. Vary the angle of each head slightly and let one sit a touch higher or further along the wire than the other.
No ink pen handy, the tip of a fine brush loaded with very dark grey paint draws just as thin a wire.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Burnt Sienna,Titanium White,Ivory Black
Paint the juniper sprig first as a loose cluster of narrow blue-grey needle shapes with a few dusty purple-blue berries tucked among them, working wet into wet so the needle colors merge softly at the base of the cluster. Let this dry fully before adding the goldfinch.
The goldfinch is where color gets to be bold: a bright red face patch, black and yellow wing bars, a warm buff body, painted in small confident shapes rather than blended, since a goldfinch’s markings are naturally crisp and graphic rather than soft.
Where this goes wrong is in the wing bars, where overworking the yellow and black stripes with too many brush passes muddies them into grey. Paint each stripe once, let it dry, and resist the urge to go back over it.
Once this combination works for you, try swapping the juniper for a seed head or teasel next time and see how differently the bird’s colors sit against a warmer brown background.
Palette: Cadmium Red,Cadmium Yellow,Ivory Black,Prussian Blue
Mix a deep blue-black for the sloes, since real sloes carry that dusty purple-blue bloom rather than true black, and dab each one on with the side of a round brush so they come out slightly irregular rather than perfectly round. Leave small white gaps between berries for frost catching the light.</p\u?
The blackthorn’s branches are thin, dark and thorny, best drawn with a fine ink pen directly onto dry paper once the berries are in place, crossing and angling sharply since blackthorn grows in a dense, wiry tangle rather than smooth curves.

A heavy frost effect is easy to overdo until the whole hedge looks snowed under rather than frosted. Keep the white touches small and scattered, concentrated along the top edges of twigs and berries where frost would actually settle.

If deep blue-black feels tricky to mix, start with Payne’s grey and add a touch of alizarin crimson until it turns that dusty plum shade.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Alizarin Crimson,Ivory Black,Titanium White
Set the eye level at the rider’s shoulder height rather than from above or below, which keeps the horse feeling grounded on the lane rather than floating. From that eye level, the top hedges on either side should lean inward slightly as they recede, converging gently toward a point near the horizon.
Paint the horse and rider as one connected dark shape first, since from a distance they read as a single silhouette rather than two separate forms, then add the hedges in loose dark green-brown on both sides, taller and more detailed close to the viewer and smaller further back.
Painters often make both hedges the same height all the way down the lane, which flattens the perspective completely. Let the nearer hedge sections tower over the horse while the far ones shrink to thin dark lines.
No room for a full hedge tunnel, narrow the scene to just one hedge along one side and open sky on the other for an easier version.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Sap Green,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White
Paint the distant snowy hills first in the palest wash you can mix, since anything further away in a winter landscape should sit closer in value to the white of the paper. Layer a slightly stronger grey-blue in front of that for a nearer hill, then the window frame itself in warm brown last so it reads clearly as the closest, darkest shape.
The sleeping dog curls on the cushion in the foreground as a simple comma shape, nose tucked to tail, painted in one warm flat color with just a touch of darker shadow underneath to settle it onto the seat.
The hills and the dog competing for attention is the usual issue here. Keep the hills soft and low in contrast, and save your darkest, warmest color entirely for the dog, so the eye lands there first.
Try it quickly in ten minutes with just the dog and window frame, or spend forty adding a cushion pattern and a second far-off tree on the hillside.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Burnt Sienna,Burnt Umber,Titanium White
Build the heron in flight from a few long confident strokes: a stretched neck, trailing legs, broad wings held in a shallow downward curve, painted in soft blue-grey with the underside left paler where light would catch it from below off the snow and water. Work quickly here since a hesitant line loses the sense of glide.
The river below stays mostly reflected sky, a pale grey-blue wash with a few horizontal strokes of slightly darker grey for gentle ripples, bordered by snowy banks left as bare white paper on both sides.
A flying bird painted too symmetrically looks stiff and pinned rather than moving. Let one wing sit slightly higher than the other and angle the whole body diagonally across the page rather than level and centered.
The watercolor bird resources on this site, including these watercolor bird templates, are worth a look if wing shapes like this feel tricky to judge by eye.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Prussian Blue,Titanium White,Burnt Sienna
Paint the jay’s body in soft pinkish-brown first, then while that base is still slightly damp, drop in the signature blue and black barred wing patch, letting it bleed just slightly at the edges for a feathered rather than painted-on look. The head tilts down toward the snow, which is the pose that tells the whole story.
The acorn and the small dug hole in the snow sit in the lower corner, the acorn a tiny warm brown oval half tucked into a patch where you have lifted color back to white with a damp brush to show disturbed snow.
The blue wing patch is the one detail that makes this unmistakably a jay, so if it comes out too dull, let it dry completely and glaze a second thin layer of pure blue directly over just that patch to brighten it without disturbing the rest of the bird.
No blue paint that reads bright enough, mixing a little white gouache into ultramarine lifts it closer to a jay’s true feather color.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Ultramarine Blue,Ivory Black,Titanium White
Paint the dogwood stems first as a bundle of thin, bright red-orange vertical lines, varying their height and thickness slightly so the bundle feels gathered by hand rather than ruled out. This color against snow is one of the most striking combinations in a winter palette, so let the red stay clean and undiluted.
The girl holding them goes in as a simple warm-coated silhouette, her arm angled across her body to cradle the stems, with her face left mostly suggested rather than detailed since the stems are the real subject here.
Painting the stems too uniformly straight and evenly spaced is the easy trap. Let a few bend slightly and overlap near the base where her hand holds them, which reads as far more natural than a tidy fan.
One tip for today: paint the dogwood red while the paper is bone dry rather than damp, since this is one of the few places in a winter painting where you want a hard, crisp edge rather than a soft one.
Palette: Cadmium Red,Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White
Paint each crow as a simple rounded black shape with a slight forward lean to suggest the walk, keeping them loosely graphic rather than detailed since from this distance a crow is mostly silhouette. Vary each one’s pose a little, one with a head turned, one mid-step, one pausing.
Line the three crows up along a shallow diagonal rather than a straight row across the page, which immediately reads as more natural movement along a field edge than three birds standing in a line. Space them unevenly, with two closer together and one further off.
Painting identical crows is the obvious misstep with a repeated subject like this. Change the angle of the beak and the tilt of the body on each one, even slightly, so each bird feels like its own creature rather than a stamp repeated three times.
The field edge behind them needs only a thin line of dark scrubby grass poking through the snow to ground the whole scene.
Palette: Ivory Black,Payne’s Grey,Burnt Umber,Titanium White
This is the one piece in the set that earns a genuinely bold sky, so start there: wash pale pink and soft orange low along the horizon, letting it fade upward into the same cool grey-blue used elsewhere in a winter palette. Work this wash quickly while the paper is wet so the colors melt into each other without hard bands.
Once the sky is dry, paint the farm gate as a simple dark silhouette crossing the lane, since a strong dark shape against a bright sunrise sky is what sells the time of day. The lane itself stays white paper with only the faintest pink reflection washed along its surface.
The sunrise colors can easily turn syrupy if overworked. Mix the pink and orange generously and let them do the work in one pass rather than going back in to add more, which is what muddies a sky wash fastest.
No pink paint in the box, a touch of red mixed into a lot of white and a whisper of yellow gets close enough.
Palette: Rose Pink,Cadmium Orange,Payne’s Grey,Ivory Black
Paint the roof first in a strong dark grey-brown, sloped steeply with a thick band of white snow left along its ridge, since the contrast of dark roof against bright snow is what frames the little window beneath it. The dormer window sits small and centered, its frame painted in the same dark tone as the roof.
Inside the window, leave most of the glass dark except for a small pale shape representing the cat’s face peeking up from the sill, just two triangle ears and a pale muzzle suggested rather than fully rendered.
A common issue is making the window too large relative to the roof, which loses the sense of a small, snug attic space. Keep the window modest, no more than a fifth of the roof’s width, so the whole thing reads as cozy rather than like a shopfront.
Snow piled along a sloped roof like this pairs well with the lit window studies in these snowy street and window scenes if you want to build out a fuller series.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Burnt Sienna
Paint the stone wall first in uneven patches of warm grey and buff, leaving some edges rough and dry-brushed to suggest old weathered stone, then let it dry completely before the ivy goes on top. The ivy leaves are simple pointed shapes in dark green, each one touched along one edge with a thin icy white-blue line for frost.
Tuck the sparrow partly behind a leaf or two rather than sitting it fully in the open, which is what makes it read as hiding rather than merely perched. Keep its colors muted, warm browns and soft greys, so it blends convincingly into the ivy around it.
Ivy painted as one flat green mass loses all its charm. Vary the green from leaf to leaf, some cooler, some warmer, some darker where they overlap, so the wall feels like dozens of individual leaves rather than a single shape.
If stone texture feels fussy with a brush, try lifting small dry patches with a crumpled tissue right after laying the wash for a quicker, rougher stone surface.
Palette: Sap Green,Hooker’s Green,Burnt Sienna,Titanium White
Paint the stream first as a dark, moving ribbon of blue-grey winding under the bridge, leaving jagged white gaps along its edges where ice has formed, since water is the one element here that should stay darker than its snowy surroundings. The bridge’s stone arch goes in next, a simple curved shape in warm grey with snow capping its top edge.
Set the bridge a little off center rather than in the middle of the page, with the lane or path leading toward and through its arch, which gives the whole scene a sense of a place you could actually walk into.
The arch itself is where proportions go wrong most often: before painting, check that the arch’s height roughly equals its width at the base, which keeps it reading as a solid stone structure rather than a flattened oval.
Try it in ten minutes with just the arch and stream, and in forty minutes add the overhanging bare branches and a line of reflected color in the water.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Prussian Blue,Burnt Umber,Titanium White
Paint the thrush’s speckled chest as the main event: a warm buff base wash first, then once it is dry, flick small dark brown dots across it with the tip of a fine brush, keeping them denser toward the belly and sparser near the throat the way real thrush markings fade.
The shrub above it stays loose and secondary, dark bare twigs with just a dusting of snow caught in the forks, since the bird hunting at ground level is the focus and the shrub exists mainly to explain where it is.
Speckled markings like this often end up too even and regular, which looks stamped rather than natural. Flick the brush at slightly different angles and pressures so some spots come out larger or more smudged than others.
No fine brush for the speckles, the tip of a toothpick dipped in diluted brown paint makes equally convincing small dots.
You Will Need
- fine brush or toothpick for speckling
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Burnt Umber,Sap Green,Titanium White
Paint the blue jay in bold confident patches of bright blue, white and black, since a blue jay’s markings are naturally crisp rather than blended, so resist softening the edges between its colors too much. Let the white chest and face stand out clearly against the surrounding blue.
The window box beneath it holds a few small sprigs of purple-pink heather poking through a cap of snow, painted after the jay is dry so the purple does not bleed into the blue feathers nearby. Keep the heather loose, just a handful of small dabbed clusters rather than individually painted flowers.
Placing the jay dead center on the window box looks static. Perch it toward one end instead, with its head turned slightly to glance across the empty space on the other side, which gives the whole composition somewhere for the eye to travel.
This bird and the cardinal studies in these winter red bird ideas make a nice contrasting pair if you want to paint both.
Palette: Ultramarine Blue,Ivory Black,Titanium White,Quinacridone Violet
Mix a dark base for the starling’s body, then while it is still damp, dab tiny flecks of green, violet and bronze into the wet paint so it catches that iridescent speckled sheen starlings have in winter plumage, rather than painting it as plain black. Let those colors mingle on their own rather than blending them smooth.
The hawthorn berries cluster densely around the bird in deep red, each one a quick confident dot rather than a carefully outlined circle, with a thin icy wash over the top once dry to suggest the hard frost coating them.
If the iridescent speckling turns muddy instead of shimmering, the paint was likely too wet when the extra colors went in. Let the base dry to just damp, not glossy wet, before dabbing in the green and violet for cleaner speckled results.
No violet in your set, a touch of blue mixed with red on the palette gets close enough for this small speckled effect.
Palette: Ivory Black,Hooker’s Green,Quinacridone Violet,Cadmium Red
Set the eye level low and centered, looking straight through the archway as if standing just in front of it, which lets the arch frame a bright distant view of the snowy lane beyond. Paint the stone arch itself dark and heavily textured in the foreground, since this strong dark frame is what makes the view through it glow by comparison.
Inside the arch, keep everything paler and softer: distant trees, a hint of lane, a wash of pale sky, all several shades lighter than the stone around them. This jump in value between the dark arch and the bright scene beyond is the whole trick of the composition.
An arch that is too rounded or too narrow loses the sense of solid old stone. Before painting, pencil a rough semicircle and check its width against its height, aiming for the arch to feel a little taller than it is wide for a convincing stone structure.
No time for heavy stone texture, a flat dark wash for the arch still frames the bright lane effectively on its own.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Prussian Blue
Build the window frame first as a simple angled structure, since a bay window’s charm comes from its slight three-sided shape, then fill the glass panes with a soft cool grey-blue for the falling snow outside, leaving small scattered white dots untouched for flakes caught mid-air.
Inside, pack the sill with loose green plant shapes in a mix of sap green and darker Hooker’s green, varying leaf sizes and letting some spill slightly over the window’s edge, which makes the collection feel lived-in rather than arranged.
Crowding every plant at exactly the same height along the sill is the easy misstep. Let one tall spiky plant rise higher than the others and tuck a trailing one lower near the glass, so the silhouette has real variation.
For more plant-filled window scenes to pair with this one, the winter botanical journal pages are worth browsing.
Palette: Sap Green,Hooker’s Green,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White
Paint the sunflower head first, hanging its face slightly downward and drooping the way spent seed heads do in winter, in a warm brown-grey mix with a few individual seed marks flicked in once the base dries. A thin icy white edge along its rim suggests the frost settled overnight.
Place the two finches close together but not identical, one slightly higher pecking at the seed head and one lower looking outward, their warm rosy-red and streaked brown feathers painted in soft overlapping washes rather than hard outlines.
Two birds sharing one small perch often end up overlapping awkwardly if you have not planned their spacing. Sketch both in pencil first and check there is a small gap of visible seed head between their bodies before any paint goes down.
Once this pairing feels comfortable, try it again next time with a single finch on a bare thistle head for a simpler, more solitary version of the same idea.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Alizarin Crimson,Burnt Umber,Titanium White
What to Do Next
Pick whichever idea is pulling at you most, whether that is the blackbird in the rowan berries or the lane through the old stone arch, and gather a scrap of cold press paper to test your washes before committing to the good sheet. Loose winter watercolor forgives a wobble far more than it rewards caution, so let the water do some of the deciding and see where today’s painting takes you.
Frequently Asked Questions
What paper works best for loose winter watercolor scenes like these?
Cold press watercolor paper at a heavier weight works best, since it handles the wet into wet washes these winter scenes rely on without buckling or pilling under repeated layers.
How do you keep snow looking white instead of grey or muddy?
Leave the paper bare wherever snow should read as brightest, and only add a thin cool grey-blue shadow at the edges of snow shapes to suggest form, never a flat wash over the whole area.
What colors make a convincing winter sky in watercolor?
A soft mix of Payne’s grey, a touch of Prussian blue and a warm neutral like burnt sienna gives a believable winter sky, shifting warmer near a sunrise or cooler for an overcast afternoon.
How do you paint small winter birds without them looking stiff?
Build each bird from a few confident rounded shapes rather than an outline you fill in, keep the head tucked close to the body, and add fine ink details like legs and beak only once the paint is fully dry.
Can these winter watercolor ideas work in a smaller sketchbook?
Yes, every scene here is sized for one sitting and works just as well small in a sketchbook as it does on a full sheet, since the loose washes and white paper carry the mood either way.
