Storybook illustration vintage painting is the kind of work that lets you slow down and tell a tiny story with a brush. Think of old Scandinavian picture books: round-cheeked children in knitted caps, elves tucked under pine boughs, corgis curled on porch swings, candlelight pooling on a cottage table. Oil on a small canvas suits this mood perfectly, soft edges, muted color, nothing fussy or overworked.
Below you will find 36 scenes to paint, one child or one cottage moment at a time, moving from quick single figures to fuller seasonal scenes. Pick whichever one calls to you first and start today, you do not need to go in order.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start with children picking blueberries, since it sets the whole mood for everything else on this list: small figures, tall pines, soft dappled light. Block in the canvas with a thin wash of burnt umber first, then rough in two or three child shapes bent toward a patch of low bushes, with one or two tiny elves no taller than the children’s knees peeking from the moss nearby.
Work background to foreground in oil: pines and sky first while wet, then the children’s smocks and caps, then the blueberry bushes last so their dark leaves sit crisply over the lighter ground. Keep elf faces almost blank, just a suggestion of nose and cheek, so they read as gentle rather than cartoonish.
This goes wrong when every child ends up the same height and pose. Measure one child against the pine trunk behind her before you paint the second figure, so the heights stay honestly different and the group feels natural rather than stamped from one template.
If you do not have burnt umber for the underpainting, a thin wash of raw sienna works just as well and keeps the whole scene a touch warmer.
Palette: Sap Green,Burnt Umber,Dusty Rose,Cream
After elves in the pines, mushroom children under their own caps is the next gentle step into the fantastical side of this style. Sketch three or four child-sized mushroom caps in charcoal first, overlapping them loosely so some tilt forward and some back, then paint the caps themselves before adding the small faces and legs tucked beneath.
Build the rain with thin diagonal strokes of pale grey-blue oil paint dragged lightly over the dry background, added only once the caps and figures underneath are fully finished and dry to the touch. A dry, mostly-empty brush dragged fast across the surface gives rain a much more convincing streak than a loaded one.
The common mistake is painting every cap the same red and white, which flattens the whole group into wallpaper. Vary two caps toward dusty rose and one toward a soft ochre so the eye has somewhere to travel.
No charcoal on hand, a thinned grey oil paint on a rag works for the first sketch marks just as well.

Four seasons walking hand in hand across a meadow asks you to paint four small personalities in one canvas, which is a lovely challenge once the mushroom children have warmed up your eye for grouping figures. Lay the meadow in first with a loose horizontal sweep of moss green and cream, then place the four children evenly across it, each dressed to suggest their season rather than labeled with anything literal.
Paint left to right so wet edges can blend a little where hands overlap, spring in pale green and pink, summer in warm gold, autumn in russet, winter in soft white and blue. Keep every face turned very slightly toward the next child, which does more to suggest they are walking together than any detail in the legs.
If the row starts to feel like four cutouts lined up, stagger the children’s feet so they are not all mid-stride at once. One should look settled, one mid-step, one just lifting a foot.
Swap a hard meadow line for a soft, uneven one if you want the ground to feel less like a stage floor.
Palette: Moss Green,Dusty Rose,Burnt Sienna,Titanium White
Reference old nursery-book illustrations of the seasons for costume cues, a flower crown, a wheat sheaf, an apron of apples, white furs, rather than inventing symbols from scratch.
Bring the mood down to one quiet moment with a girl feeding a corgi in a cottage garden. Rough in the girl kneeling first, since her pose sets the whole composition, then place the corgi low and close beside her, its short legs and big ears needing only a few confident strokes rather than careful detail.
Paint the girl’s dress and the corgi’s coat wet into wet so the colors sit softly together, then add the garden behind once both figures are blocked in, hollyhocks or a low fence kept loose and secondary. Finish with a single bright fleck of white for the food bowl, which pulls the eye straight to the center of the story.
Corgis go wrong fastest in the proportions: the body reads too long or the legs too short if you do not check the head against the body first. Measure the corgi’s head width against its back before committing to the final body length, corgis are stout but the head should still look about a third of the total body length.
If your garden flowers feel fussy, blur them further with a dry fan brush once dry.
Palette: Cream,Burnt Sienna,Cornflower Blue,Moss Green
A boy sailing a leaf boat down a little stream gives you a chance to paint moving water, which is a nice new texture after the stillness of the garden scene. Block the stream first with a few confident horizontal strokes of cornflower blue and cream, leaving the paint thick enough to drag later for ripples.
Place the boy crouched at the water’s edge, his weight low and his hand still reaching toward the leaf, then drag a dry brush through the wet stream paint around the leaf boat to suggest the current pulling it along. Add the leaf boat itself last, small and bright so it reads instantly against the water.
This scene tips into stiffness if the boy’s reaching arm is painted straight and locked. Bend the elbow slightly and drop the shoulder nearest the water, a small adjustment that makes the whole pose feel like a held breath rather than a statue.
No fan brush for the ripples, the edge of an old credit card dragged lightly through wet paint works almost as well.
Palette: Cornflower Blue,Sap Green,Cream,Burnt Umber
Move indoors now for a girl in a long dress lighting candles in a cottage kitchen, a scene built entirely around one warm light source. Paint the room dark and muted first, walls and shelves in soft umber and grey, then place the girl reaching toward a candle with her match or taper caught mid-motion.
Add the candle flames last of all, a tiny dab of pure cream or pale yellow surrounded by a soft halo of warm orange blended just at its edge, nothing else in the room should be this bright. Everything else in the kitchen, the shelves, the jars, the floor, should sit a full shade or two darker than that glow.
The mistake here is lighting the whole room evenly, which kills the candlelit feeling instantly. Darken the corners of the canvas deliberately, even if it feels like too much shadow, since the contrast is what sells the warmth.
If you want a softer link to another cottage mood, the candlelit hallways in this Victorian Christmas journal set show the same warm, dim trick in paper form.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Cream,Cadmium Orange,Payne’s Grey
Spring as a girl in a flower crown waking sleeping buds works best as a close, intimate scene rather than a wide landscape. Paint her kneeling low with her flower crown catching most of the light, then place a cluster of closed buds just beneath her reaching hand, barely cracked open where her fingers touch them.
Build the scene from the ground up: soft brown earth first, then the stems, then the girl, then the crown and the buds last so the brightest, most delicate color sits on top of everything else. A tiny glaze of pale pink over the opening buds suggests the moment of waking better than any hard line could.
Where the eye goes depends entirely on the light source here. Put it just above and behind her, so her crown catches the brightest highlight and the buds beneath her hand sit in half shadow, waiting their turn.
No glazing medium handy, a very thin, almost dry layer of paint straight from the tube gives a similar soft veil of color.
Palette: Dusty Rose,Moss Green,Cream,Burnt Sienna
After spring’s warm light, winter as a boy in white furs sweeping frost over the fields is a good chance to practice a cooler palette without losing the cozy mood entirely. Sketch the boy mid-sweep, broom or branch held low and angled, then build the field behind him in pale cornflower blue and cream rather than pure white, which keeps the snow from looking flat.
Paint the furs last, thick and textured with short choppy strokes of a stiff brush, letting some of the cream underlayer show through at the edges so the fur reads as soft rather than solid. Keep his cheeks a touch of dusty rose against all that pale color, it is the one warm note the whole scene needs.
Flat, shadowless snow is the usual trap here. Drop a long pale blue-grey shadow from the boy’s feet across the field, which does more to suggest a low winter sun than any other single mark.
If stiff bristle brushes are not in your kit, a dry round brush dabbed rather than stroked gives a similar textured fur effect.
Palette: Titanium White,Cornflower Blue,Dusty Rose,Payne’s Grey
Swing the mood back warm with Autumn as a girl in russet scattering apples from her apron, a scene full of small round shapes that are forgiving for a confident beginner. Paint her apron first as one simple warm shape gathered at the hem, then scatter five or six apples falling from it in a loose arc rather than a tidy row.
Work the apples last and keep them varied in size, since apples falling from a real apron never land in a neat line. A single thick highlight dabbed on the upper curve of each apple is enough to make them read as round without any real shading underneath.
This is the idea in the list to try the quick version on if you are short on time: block the girl and apron in ten minutes with flat color and three or four apple shapes, done. Given forty minutes, add the mist behind her and a second layer of leaf litter at her feet for real depth.
No russet in your palette, mix burnt sienna with a touch of burnt umber for a close match.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cadmium Red Light,Moss Green,Cream
Summer as a sunburnt boy carrying a sheaf of wheat closes the season sequence with the warmest palette of the four. Paint the wheat sheaf first, built from loose upward strokes of cream and yellow ochre rather than individual stalks, then place the boy leaning slightly under its weight so the whole figure reads as carrying something heavy.
Give his face and arms a flush of dusty rose and burnt sienna mixed thin over the base skin tone, since a sunburnt look comes from warmth layered on top rather than a darker base color. Finish with a bright sky behind him in pale cornflower blue to push the warm tones of the wheat and his skin forward.
Boys carrying heavy things often end up standing perfectly upright, which reads as effortless rather than laboring. Tilt his whole torso a few degrees against the weight of the sheaf and drop one shoulder, small changes that sell the weight convincingly.
If yellow ochre runs short, a touch of raw sienna mixed with cream gets you close enough for the wheat.
Palette: Yellow Ochre,Burnt Sienna,Cornflower Blue,Dusty Rose
A little girl riding a dragonfly over a lily pond brings in the most fantastical pose on this list, so give yourself a simple stick figure sketch first to settle her balance before adding any paint. Place her seated or lying along the dragonfly’s back, arms wrapped around its middle, with the pond and lily pads kept low and small beneath her so the scale reads clearly.
Paint the dragonfly’s wings last and thin, almost transparent, a few strokes of pale cornflower blue over the cream background rather than solid color, which is the only way insect wings read as light rather than leathery. Keep the girl’s dress simple and bright so she stays the clear focal point against all that delicate wing detail.
The proportion trick that saves this scene: measure the dragonfly’s body length against the girl’s own height before painting either in full, the insect needs to look just barely large enough to carry her, not cartoonishly oversized.
No fine liner brush for the wing veins, the tip of a painting knife dragged very lightly works in a pinch.
You Will Need
- fine liner brush for wing detail
Palette: Cornflower Blue,Moss Green,Dusty Rose,Cream
Elves dancing in a moonlit ring while a child watches from the ferns is one of the more atmospheric scenes here, built almost entirely on value rather than detail. Paint the night sky and ferns dark first in deep mossy green and Payne’s grey, then place three or four small elf figures mid-dance in a loose circle, lit from a single pale moon overhead.
Keep the watching child half hidden, just a face and shoulder peeking through painted fern fronds at the canvas edge, which does more to create a sense of secrecy than showing her whole body would. Add the moonlight last, a cool pale wash over the elves and the ground they dance on, leaving the ferns and sky around them several shades darker.
Where the light comes from decides everything in this piece. Keep every shadow falling the same direction, away from the moon, even on the small elf figures, or the ring will feel lit from several directions at once and lose its magic.
No deep green on hand, mix Payne’s grey into your sap green for a convincing night shade.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Sap Green,Cream,Cornflower Blue
For more fern and woodland texture ideas in a similar gentle mood, the fairy house set is worth a look: fairy house drawing ideas cover a lot of the same mossy, tucked-away feeling.
Lingonberry children in red caps tumbling through the moss is a playful, low-to-the-ground scene after the stillness of the moonlit ring. Paint a soft rolling bed of moss first in deep moss green with lighter cream highlights where the light catches it, then tumble three or four small children across it in loose, overlapping poses, limbs akimbo rather than posed.
Work each child’s red cap in last and keep every cap a slightly different red, one leaning toward cadmium red, one toward a deeper russet, so the group does not read as identical copies. A scatter of tiny red dots for lingonberries among the moss ties the children’s caps to the ground they are rolling through.
Overlapping tumbling figures go wrong when every limb is painted with the same hard edge. Soften the edges where one child’s arm or leg crosses another’s body, a quick dry-brush blend right at the overlap line, which reads as motion rather than a jumble of separate cutouts.
If you are short on reds, a mix of cadmium red and a touch of burnt umber gives you both shades needed from one tube.
Palette: Cadmium Red Light,Moss Green,Cream,Burnt Umber
A girl spinning wool by the window with two corgis at her feet is a quiet domestic scene that rewards a careful, slow build. Place the spinning wheel and the girl’s seated pose first, since the wheel’s circular shape anchors the whole composition, then add the two corgis curled or sitting at her feet once her figure is settled.
Paint the window light last, a soft pale wash falling diagonally across the girl’s shoulder and down onto the floor near the dogs, warming the whole left or right side of the canvas while the far side stays in gentle shadow. Keep the wool itself a simple pale cream shape rather than trying to paint individual strands.
Two corgis in one small scene risk looking like one dog painted twice. Vary their poses clearly, one sitting upright and alert, one curled flat asleep, so the pair reads as two distinct characters rather than a stamped pattern.
No spinning wheel reference on hand, a simple wooden stool with a basket of wool beside her tells almost the same story and is far easier to paint convincingly.
Palette: Cream,Burnt Sienna,Cornflower Blue,Dusty Rose
A cottage kitchen with dried herbs and a candlelit table set for tea is a still life rather than a figure scene, a nice change of pace after several children in a row. Block the table and its cloth first in simple flat shapes, then add the teapot, cups and a small plate, keeping every object a little rounded and soft-edged rather than crisp still-life perfect.
Hang the dried herb bundles last, loose dark green and dusty rose shapes dangling from the top edge of the canvas, their texture suggested with just a few quick strokes rather than individual leaves. One small candle at the table’s center ties the whole warm scene together.
Still life scenes like this fall flat when every object sits in the same light. Let the candle be the brightest point on the canvas and darken the corners and the herb bundles above it noticeably, which gives the whole kitchen a sense of depth.
If you enjoy this kind of cozy table setting, the bakery drawing tutorials work through similar shopfront and counter scenes in a related warm, nostalgic mood.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Cream,Moss Green,Cadmium Orange
Children making flower crowns under an apple tree brings a small group back into the frame, this time seated and calm rather than running or tumbling. Paint the apple tree’s canopy first as one soft rounded mass in moss green with a few darker shadow patches, then seat two or three children beneath it with flowers gathered loosely in their laps.
Work each child’s hands last and keep them simple, a flower crown half finished in one child’s lap is enough to tell the whole story without painting every petal being threaded. A few fallen apples scattered near their feet ties the tree above to the ground below.
Once this scene works, the easy variation for next time is swapping the season: the same seated group under bare winter branches with pinecones in their laps instead of flowers tells a completely different, equally cozy story with the same composition.
No deep moss green mixed yet, sap green with a touch of burnt umber gets you there quickly.
Palette: Moss Green,Dusty Rose,Cream,Burnt Sienna
A girl with a watering can among hollyhocks taller than she is plays with scale in a gentle, believable way. Paint the hollyhock stems first, tall vertical strokes running well above where the girl’s head will sit, then place her small figure between them with the watering can tilted mid-pour.
Add the hollyhock blooms last in small clusters of dusty rose and cream along the upper stems, keeping them loose rather than individually shaped, since from this low angle looking up at tall flowers the detail would naturally blur at the top of the canvas anyway. A thin stream of water falling from the can’s spout, just a pale curved line, finishes the action.
The trick that makes the scale read correctly is keeping the girl’s head well below the first cluster of blooms, if her head reaches the flowers the “taller than she is” feeling disappears entirely. Measure twice before committing to her height on the canvas.
If hollyhocks feel fussy to invent, tall delphiniums in the same dusty rose and blue tones work just as well for this composition.
Palette: Dusty Rose,Moss Green,Cream,Cornflower Blue
A girl leading a goat home along a stone wall at dusk shifts the mood toward the end of a day, which means working with a warmer, dimmer light than most of the scenes so far. Paint the sky first in soft fading cornflower blue blending into dusty rose near the horizon, then block in the low stone wall running alongside the path before placing the girl and goat walking together.
Keep the goat’s rope simple, one loose curved line connecting the girl’s hand to its neck, and paint the pair slightly silhouetted against that fading sky rather than fully lit, which sells the dusk feeling faster than any detail in their faces could. Add the stone wall’s texture last with small dabbed strokes of grey and cream.
Dusk scenes fail when the sky is too bright behind the figures, competing for attention. Keep the girl and goat a full value darker than the brightest part of the sky, even if it means they read as mostly shape rather than detail.
No dusty rose for the horizon, a touch of cadmium red mixed into cream warms the sky just as well.
Palette: Cornflower Blue,Dusty Rose,Payne’s Grey,Cream
Children sewing dolls’ clothes together on a cottage porch returns to a calm, seated scene after the walking figures of the last two ideas. Place two children side by side on porch steps or a bench first, one holding fabric and one threading a needle, their heads tilted toward each other and the work between them.
Paint the porch boards and railing behind them loosely, letting the wood grain suggest itself with a few dragged strokes rather than painted plank by plank, then add the small scraps of fabric and a doll or two tucked beside the children last, bright spots of color against the muted wood.
Hands doing close work like sewing are easy to overthink. Simplify each hand to three or four basic shapes rather than individual fingers, from a small distance this reads perfectly well as sewing without needing anatomical detail.
No real porch reference, a simple low wooden bench against a plain wall tells the same story if a full porch feels like too much structure to paint.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cream,Dusty Rose,Cornflower Blue
A boy sledging down a snowy hill toward a red cottage brings motion back into the scene, with a clear destination this time rather than an open field. Paint the red cottage first, small and bright at the base of the hill, since its color anchors the whole composition and everything else gets painted to support it.
Work the snowy hill next in pale cornflower blue and cream, then place the boy on his sled at an angle that clearly shows downward motion, body leaning forward and sled tipped slightly nose-down. Add a spray of loose white flecks behind the sled last, flicked on with a stiff brush, to suggest kicked-up snow.
A sled painted sitting flat and level kills the sense of speed instantly. Tilt the whole sled and boy a few degrees down the slope and keep his scarf trailing backward in a soft diagonal streak, both small moves that read as motion.
If flicking paint feels risky on a small canvas, test the stiff brush flick on scrap paper first until the spray looks right.
You Will Need
- stiff bristle brush for snow spray
Palette: Cadmium Red Light,Titanium White,Cornflower Blue,Burnt Umber
A girl trimming a Christmas tree with candles and paper stars is a good scene for practicing small repeated highlights across a dark surface. Paint the tree itself first as one dark mossy green triangular mass, keeping individual branches suggested rather than drawn one by one, then place the girl reaching up toward its upper half with a star or candle in hand.
Add the candles and paper stars last, scattered across the tree in a loose, uneven pattern rather than a tidy grid, each one just a small bright dab of cream or pale yellow. Too many evenly spaced lights looks mechanical, so cluster a few close together and leave gaps elsewhere.
The temptation here is to paint every single candle flame at full brightness, which flattens the whole tree into one glowing blob. Vary the size and brightness of each dab so two or three read as the clear focal points and the rest sit quieter in support.
No pale yellow for the stars, a touch of cream mixed with yellow ochre gets you close enough.
Palette: Sap Green,Cream,Cadmium Red Light,Yellow Ochre
Children in a rowboat on a still lake at midsummer slows the mood right down after the business of the tree scene. Paint the lake first as one calm flat plane of cornflower blue and cream, then place the small rowboat and its two or three children sitting low within it, oars resting rather than mid-row if you want the stillest possible feeling.
Work the reflection of the boat and children next, a softened, slightly darker mirror of the shapes above painted directly beneath them while the lake surface is still workable, then add the pale midsummer sky last with barely any clouds at all.
Stillness is a light trick as much as a pose trick. Keep every edge in this piece slightly soft, boat, children, reflection and sky alike, since the gentlest focus across the whole canvas is what makes a scene feel quiet rather than active.
No luck getting a convincing reflection, a few horizontal strokes dragged gently downward from the boat’s underside suggest it well enough without needing a mirror image.
Palette: Cornflower Blue,Cream,Dusty Rose,Moss Green
A mother reading to her children by lamplight in an old parlour brings a grown figure into this list for the first time, a gentle shift after so many child-only scenes. Paint the room’s dark furniture and walls first, then seat the mother with a book in a soft armchair and her children gathered close, one leaning on her lap and one at her side.
Add the lamp and its glow last, the same single warm light source trick used in the candlelit kitchen earlier: a small bright dab for the lamp itself, surrounded by a soft halo that fades into the dark room around it. Keep every face turned toward the book or toward her, nothing looking out at the viewer.
Grouped figures like this sit awkwardly if every head is at the same height. Let one child kneel, one lean against the chair arm, and the mother sit upright, three different heights in one small triangle of figures.
If an armchair feels complex to paint convincingly, a simple wooden rocking chair is an easier, equally fitting substitute.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Cadmium Orange,Cream,Payne’s Grey
Children dancing around a midsummer pole with long ribbons is one of the busier compositions on this list, so give yourself a loose circular sketch first to place four or five small figures evenly around the pole before adding any color. Paint the pole itself first, tall and simple, then build the children’s dancing poses around it, each one holding a ribbon that trails up toward the top.
Work the ribbons last, long soft curved strokes in dusty rose, cornflower blue and cream, letting them cross and overlap as real ribbons would in a dance rather than hanging perfectly straight. A wreath of greenery and small flowers wrapped around the pole’s top ties the whole scene together.
Evenly spaced dancing figures around a circle can look stiff if every child faces directly outward. Turn two or three children slightly inward or sideways, mid-step, so the ring feels like real movement rather than a diagram.
No multiple ribbon colors mixed yet, two colors alternating is plenty, more than three starts to look tangled on a small canvas.
Palette: Moss Green,Dusty Rose,Cornflower Blue,Cream
A little girl and a corgi asleep under a quilt on a porch swing is one of the quietest, easiest scenes on this list and a good one to paint when you want something calm and quick. Paint the porch swing’s shape first, then tuck the sleeping girl and corgi together beneath one simple quilt shape, keeping their forms rounded and overlapping rather than distinct.
Add the quilt’s pattern last with a few loose squares or stripes of dusty rose and cream, nothing too crisp, since a soft worn quilt should look a little faded rather than freshly stitched. A single hanging lantern or string light nearby finishes the cozy porch feeling without much extra work.
This is the idea to try in a true ten-minute version: swing shape, two sleeping forms, one quilt, done, with soft color and no real detail. Given forty minutes, add the lantern glow, quilt pattern and a bit of porch railing texture for real depth.
No porch swing reference handy, a simple wicker chair works just as well for this sleepy pairing.
Palette: Cream,Dusty Rose,Burnt Sienna,Burnt Umber
Two children marching in the rain under a big rhubarb leaf is a playful scene that depends entirely on getting the leaf’s scale right. Paint the rhubarb leaf first, one huge rounded shape held overhead by both children, its veins suggested with just a few curved strokes radiating from the center rather than drawn in full detail.
Place the two children marching beneath it next, legs mid-stride and in step with each other, then add the rain around the edges of the leaf last with the same dry, fast-dragged brush technique used for the mushroom children earlier in this list.
Measure the leaf against the children’s height before finishing it: the leaf needs to cover both their heads completely with room to spare, since a leaf only as big as one child’s umbrella would look like a regular umbrella rather than a rhubarb leaf.
No deep moss green for the leaf’s shadow side, mixing sap green with a touch of Payne’s grey gets a close, cool shadow tone.
Palette: Moss Green,Sap Green,Payne’s Grey,Cream
A girl picking violets in a spring wood with a wicker basket is a gentler return to the forest setting that opened this list. Paint the woodland floor first in soft dappled moss green and cream, suggesting a few tree trunks at the canvas edges rather than a full forest, then place the girl kneeling with her basket half full of small violet blooms.
Scatter the violets themselves last, tiny dabs of cornflower blue and dusty rose dotted loosely across the ground near her knees, keeping them small and simple rather than shaped like individual flowers. A few fallen petals near the basket’s edge finish the gathering feeling.
Dappled woodland light is easy to overdo until the whole floor looks speckled and busy. Keep the brightest light patches to two or three spots only, letting the rest of the ground sit in a calmer, more even shadow.
If cornflower blue reads too bright for violets, mix in a touch of dusty rose for a more true violet-purple shade.
Palette: Moss Green,Cornflower Blue,Dusty Rose,Cream
Children in nightgowns watching fireflies from an open window turns the candle-glow trick from earlier toward several tiny points of light instead of one. Paint the dark bedroom interior first, keeping it simple, a window frame and two small figures leaning on the sill in soft white nightgowns, then build the dark blue night outside the window.
Add the fireflies last, small scattered dabs of pale cream or pale yellow dotted unevenly across the dark night sky outside, a few close to the window and a few further off to suggest real distance. Keep the children’s nightgowns the brightest shape inside the room so they stay the focal point despite all those small outdoor lights competing for attention.
Evenly scattered fireflies in a tidy grid pattern look artificial immediately. Cluster a few together and leave larger dark gaps elsewhere, the kind of uneven scatter real insects actually make.
No pale yellow on the palette, cream with the faintest touch of yellow ochre mixed in works just as well for the glow.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Cream,Cornflower Blue
A girl building a dollhouse from an old wooden crate is a satisfying, slightly mechanical scene to paint after the softness of the firefly window. Paint the crate first, its rough wooden shape kept loose and slightly uneven rather than a perfect box, then place the girl kneeling beside it mid-project, a little paint pot or scrap of fabric in hand.
Add the crate’s half-finished details last, a scrap of curtain fabric tacked to one side, a tiny painted window shape on another, so the dollhouse reads as clearly in progress rather than a finished object. Keep her tools and materials scattered loosely around her knees rather than lined up neatly.
Wood grain on a crate is easy to overwork into stripes. A few dragged, uneven strokes of burnt umber over a cream base, varied in spacing, reads far more convincingly as rough old wood than any evenly ruled set of lines.
No real crate reference, any simple wooden box shape with a few knots and grain lines painted in tells the same story.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Cream,Dusty Rose,Cornflower Blue
Elf children rowing a birch bark boat across a pond scales everything down from the dollhouse scene into a true miniature world. Paint the pond first as a calm small plane of cornflower blue, then place the tiny birch bark boat and its two elf rowers right at the center, their oars simple thin strokes angled into the water.
Work the birch bark texture on the boat itself last, a few horizontal dashes of cream and pale grey over a base of burnt sienna, which reads instantly as peeling bark rather than solid wood. Keep the elves themselves very simple, round caps and small limbs, since too much facial detail at this tiny scale tends to look odd rather than charming.
If a full pond feels like too much canvas for such a small boat, the quick ten-minute version crops in tight: just the boat, the two elves and a small ring of ripples around it, with the rest of the pond barely suggested at the canvas edges.
No burnt sienna mixed yet, straight burnt umber lightened with a touch of cream gets close enough for birch bark.
Palette: Cornflower Blue,Burnt Sienna,Cream,Payne’s Grey
A boy scattering grain for chickens in a cottage yard at dawn brings the mood back to simple farmyard life with a lovely early light to paint. Place the boy first, arm mid-swing as he scatters grain from a basket or his hand, then add three or four chickens pecking around his feet in varied poses, heads down, heads up, one mid-step.
Paint the dawn sky behind him last, a soft gradient from pale cream near the horizon up into cornflower blue above, with the cottage roofline just suggested at one edge of the canvas. A scatter of small pale dots falling from his hand shows the grain mid-toss.
Chickens painted too neatly in a row look like toys rather than birds. Scatter them at different distances from the boy and at different angles to him, some close and large, one further off and smaller, which does more for believable farmyard chaos than any detail in the feathers.
No basket on hand for his other hand’s prop, a simple cloth sack works just as well and is quicker to paint.
Palette: Cream,Cornflower Blue,Burnt Sienna,Yellow Ochre
A girl gathering apples in an orchard in autumn mist asks you to paint atmosphere as much as any figure, which makes it a good test of restraint after some busier farmyard scenes. Block the orchard trees first as soft, slightly blurred vertical shapes fading into the pale mist behind them, then place the girl reaching up into the nearest tree, basket hooked over one arm.
Keep the trees furthest from her the palest and softest, almost merging into the cream background, while the tree she is reaching into stays a touch more defined so the eye knows exactly where to land. Add a few fallen apples on the ground near her feet last, small and simple.
Mist is painted by subtracting contrast, not adding fog on top. Mix your background tree color closer to the sky color than you think you need to, the illusion of distance comes from how little those far trees stand out, not from any literal haze painted over them.
No proper mixing medium for soft blending, a dry, barely loaded brush worked in small circles over the still-wet background softens edges just as well.
Palette: Cream,Burnt Sienna,Moss Green,Payne’s Grey
Children skating on a frozen pond with a small bonfire nearby brings warmth and cold into the same small canvas, always a satisfying contrast to paint. Lay the frozen pond first in pale cornflower blue and cream, then place two or three children skating across it in varied poses, arms out for balance, one maybe mid-glide with one leg lifted.
Add the bonfire at the pond’s edge next, a small cluster of warm orange and cream strokes with a thin trail of grey smoke rising above it, then finish by dragging a touch of that warm firelight color into the ice just near the flames, since real firelight would warm the nearby snow and ice slightly even from a distance.
Skating figures look stiff if every leg is bent at the exact same angle. Vary each child’s stance clearly, the balance and lean should look a little different from child to child, which is what makes a group skating rather than standing still on blades.
No orange for the fire, mixing cadmium red with a touch of yellow ochre gets a close, warm flame color.
Palette: Cornflower Blue,Cream,Cadmium Orange,Payne’s Grey
For more cold-weather color mixing ideas in a similarly gentle style, the winter scenery set is a useful companion: winter scenery drawing ideas.
A girl pressing flowers between book pages at the kitchen table is a quiet, close-up scene with very little movement, a nice contrast after the skating ice. Paint the table surface and the open book first, then place the girl’s hands arranging a small flower onto one page, her head bent low over the work.
Add the scattered loose flowers and a second stack of books nearby last, kept simple and a little varied in size so the tabletop does not feel too tidy or staged. A single soft beam of window light falling across the page she is working on pulls the eye straight to the center of the action.
Close hand work like this is easiest to get wrong at the fingers. Simplify her hands into soft rounded shapes rather than individually drawn fingers, especially at a small canvas size where fine detail will only read as a smudge anyway.
No window light to work from, a single candle just out of frame gives the same soft directional glow across the table.

A girl helping her grandmother hang lanterns in a summer garden brings a second adult figure into the list and a warm evening setting to match. Paint the two figures first, the grandmother reaching up to hang a lantern from a branch or line while the girl holds a second lantern ready to pass up, their height difference clearly marked from the start.
Work the garden behind them loosely in moss green and dusty rose, then add the lanterns themselves last, each one a small warm glowing shape against the cooling evening sky, with just enough light spilling onto the nearby leaves to tie them into the scene.
Pairing an adult and a child convincingly depends on getting the height difference right from the very first sketch marks. Block in the grandmother’s full height first, then measure the girl against roughly two thirds of that height before placing her, which keeps the pair looking like two real generations rather than two children of different sizes.
No string of lanterns reference, two or three single hanging lanterns tell the same warm evening story with much less to paint.

Children sitting on a fence watching the cows come home closes this list on a calm, end-of-day note that pairs well with the lantern scene before it. Paint the fence first, a simple horizontal rail with two or three children perched along it, then build a small line of cows walking in the middle distance toward a cottage or barn shape at the canvas edge.
Keep the cows simple, a few rounded dark and cream shapes with short legs, since detail at this distance would only clutter a scene that should feel settled and slow. Add the evening sky last, warm cream fading into dusty rose near the horizon, matching the quiet mood of the whole composition.
Children sitting on a fence for a while often end up painted too stiff and upright. Let their shoulders slump a little and their legs hang loosely over the rail, small details that read instantly as comfortable waiting rather than posed sitting.
If painting a full herd of cows feels like too much, two or three walking in a loose line tells the story just as well as a dozen.

What to Do Next
Pick one scene that pulls at you most, maybe the corgi garden or the blueberry elves, and set up a small canvas with just the earth-tone palette above. Block in the big dark and light shapes first, let the story settle, and finish the small warm details last.
Frequently Asked Questions
What oil paint colors do I need for storybook illustration vintage style?
A small earth-tone palette works best: moss green, cornflower blue, dusty rose, cream, burnt sienna and burnt umber cover almost every scene in this nostalgic style without needing bright primaries.
Do I need to draw the figures perfectly before painting?
No, a loose charcoal or thin paint sketch is enough. These scenes rely on soft brushwork and gentle color more than precise drawing, so rough proportions settled early matter more than clean lines.
How do I get that soft, old picture book look in oil paint?
Keep edges a little blurred rather than crisp, mute your colors with a touch of their opposite, and let one warm light source, a candle, lantern or low sun, guide where the brightest paint goes.
Can I paint these storybook scenes on paper instead of canvas?
Yes, oil paper or a gessoed board works well for practice pieces, though a small stretched canvas holds the thicker, visible brushstrokes this style depends on a little better over time.
What size canvas suits a beginner for these scenes?
An eight by ten inch canvas is a comfortable size, small enough to finish in one sitting but large enough to fit a child figure, a corgi or a small cottage scene without feeling cramped.
