31 Old Fairytale Illustration Ideas of Red Capes, Glass Slippers and Towers With Long Braids

4

An old fairytale illustration has a particular hush to it: fine sepia ink lines holding soft, antique color, like a page kept safe in a storybook for a hundred years. That is the whole appeal of painting this way, and it is easier to get right than it looks, because the ink does the drawing work and the watercolor just breathes color into it.

Below are 31 scenes built for exactly that look, from a red cape on a forest path to a tin soldier gazing up at a paper dancer. Work through them in any order, pick whichever moment calls to you first, and keep the palette muted and the page soft so every piece feels like it came out of the same old book.

Start the whole set with a girl in a red cape walking a forest path with a basket on her arm, since it is the simplest shape to get right before you move on to busier scenes. Pencil the path curving away from the bottom edge, place her small and slightly off center, then ink her cape, hood and basket with a fine dip pen before the trees.

Build the forest in two values only, a mid green-brown wash behind her and a darker one close around the path edges, so she reads clearly against both. Paint the cape in one confident stroke of red with a touch more pigment at the hem, let it dry, then add the ink outline of her cape’s fold lines on top once the paper is dry.

The common mistake here is painting the trees first and losing her small shape in all that green. If you only have a round brush and no dip pen, ink the figure with a fine fineliner instead and save the dip pen for looser line work later in the set.

Today’s tip: keep her face a few simple marks, two dots and a line, so the storybook feeling stays and you are not tempted into a full portrait.

Move from a forest to a tower next, with a tall stone tower and a long golden braid hanging from its single window. Measure the tower first: block it in as a tall rectangle about two thirds the height of your page, with the window placed a third of the way down from the top, before you touch ink to paper.

Ink the stone courses as loose horizontal lines rather than a neat grid, which keeps the storybook looseness, then paint the braid in warm yellow ochre with a slightly darker line down its center to suggest the plait. Wash the tower in grey-violet and let it dry fully before adding ivy or small window details in a darker green.

Towers go wrong when they lean, so check the two vertical edges against the straight edge of your page before you ink them permanently. No yellow ochre on hand works fine with raw sienna instead, it reads just as golden once it dries.

Finish with one small bird in flight near the top of the frame, a single dark dash is enough.

Palette: Yellow Ochre,Payne’s Grey,Davy’s Grey,Sepia

After two standing subjects, rest on something small and still: a glass slipper left on the palace stairs at midnight. This is a quiet study piece, so spend your care on the stairs themselves, inked in a slight diagonal with each step given one firm ink line along its edge.

Paint the stone steps in cool grey-blue to suggest moonlight, then leave the slipper almost entirely white paper, adding only a thin wash of pale blue-grey along one edge and a tiny highlight left untouched. The ink line around the slipper should be the finest in your whole set, drawn slowly rather than fast.

The usual mistake is overpainting the slipper until it loses its glass look, so mix your blue-grey very pale and test it on scrap paper first. Without a fine enough pen, a sharp pencil line under a light wash gives nearly the same quiet effect.

Add one dropped flower petal beside the slipper for scale and story, nothing more.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Cerulean Blue,Naples Yellow,White (paper)

Try this scene lit by a single warm lantern glow at the top of the stairs instead of moonlight, which warms the whole palette and changes the mood entirely.

Bring in your first animal with a frog sitting by an old stone well, holding up a small golden ball. Block the well as a simple cylinder shape first, its stones inked in loose curved lines, and sit the frog on its rim at a scale that reads clearly against the stone.

Paint the frog’s body in olive green with a darker green shadow underneath him, then let the golden ball sit as the one warm accent in an otherwise cool, mossy scene. Work wet-on-dry for the frog so his outline stays crisp against the softer, wetter wash of the well stones.

Where this tends to go wrong is in the proportions of his legs; compare the length of his back legs to the width of the ball in your pencil stage before inking, since too-long legs tip him into cartoon territory rather than storybook charm. If olive green feels flat, mix a little Payne’s grey into sap green for a more antique tone.

Keep the ball small and bright so it stays the focal point of the whole piece.

Step into a busier scene now that your hand is warmed up: four princesses dancing together in a candlelit underground hall. Sketch the group loosely first as four simple ovals for skirts arranged in a gentle arc, so the composition reads as one dancing unit rather than four separate figures.

Ink each figure’s outline before any color, keeping the detail on their dresses to a few curved folds, then wash each skirt a different muted jewel tone, rose, dusty blue, soft plum, pale gold, so the eye moves around the circle. Candlelight comes from somewhere low and off to one side, so shade the hall’s stone walls darker on the side away from that glow.

With four figures the composition often crowds, so leave real gaps of plain stone or floor between each dress before you start adding background detail. If jewel tone pigments are not in your set, mix any color with a touch of its complement to mute it toward that antique feel.

One tip for today: paint the candle flames last, in the brightest, cleanest color on the page, so they glow against everything around them.

Palette: Rose Madder,Dusty Blue,Plum,Naples Yellow

From a hall full of movement, settle into stillness with a sleeping castle wrapped in climbing roses and thorns. Draw the castle’s towers and walls first as simple geometric shapes, since the roses will cover a good portion of them and you need the architecture clear underneath.

Ink the thorny vines as loose, looping lines climbing up and across the walls before you paint anything, then wash the stone in soft grey and let it dry fully. Paint the roses last in small dabs of dusty pink and deep red, working from the top of the castle down so the vines feel like they are truly climbing rather than scattered.

Vines tend to go wrong when they look too tidy, so let a few loop right off the edge of the castle and across open sky for a wilder, more overgrown feel. No deep red on hand, alizarin crimson mixed with a touch of brown gets you there just as well.

Leave a couple of windows completely dark to suggest the long sleep inside.

Palette: Davy’s Grey,Alizarin Crimson,Dusty Pink,Sap Green

Bring the story back indoors with a girl in rags sorting lentils by the hearth, white doves gathered around her feet. Pencil the hearth and fireplace first as the anchor of the composition, then place her sitting figure just in front of it with a shallow bowl on her lap.

Ink her ragged dress with slightly broken, uneven lines rather than smooth ones, which tells the story of her clothing without a single word. Paint the doves in almost pure white paper with just a thin grey-blue shadow line beneath each one, and scatter a handful of small dark dots for the lentils themselves, more suggested than individually drawn.

The hearth fire is the one warm note in an otherwise cool, dim room, so keep its orange small and bright rather than spreading warm color everywhere. If white gouache is not in your kit, pure untouched paper does the same job for the doves.

Add one dove slightly mid-flight above her shoulder to give the scene a little lift.

You Will Need

• white gouache for dove highlights (optional)

Palette: Raw Umber,Payne’s Grey,Burnt Orange,White (paper)

Lift the mood with a pumpkin coach pulled by white horses through the night, a scene with real movement after the quiet hearth. Block the coach’s rounded shape first in pencil, oversized and glowing, then add the horses in motion ahead of it with legs caught mid-stride rather than standing still.

Ink the coach’s curved ribs in confident single strokes, then wash it in warm orange with a brighter patch of yellow-orange where an inner light would shine through. Keep the horses almost white with only grey shadow lines defining their muscles, so they glow pale against the dark blue night sky behind them.

Motion is easy to lose if every wheel and leg lines up too evenly, so stagger the horses’ legs and tilt the coach very slightly as if caught in the act of rolling forward. Without orange in your palette, mix cadmium yellow with a little red for the same warm pumpkin glow.

Finish with a scatter of tiny white dots for stars across the dark sky.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Prussian Blue,Payne’s Grey,White (paper)

From a coach in motion, slow down for a found moment: a brother and sister discovering a candy cottage glowing in the dark woods. Draw the cottage first with a simple roof and walls, then cover it in small round and swirl shapes in pencil before you ink any of them, so the candy decoration reads as pattern rather than clutter.

Ink the two children small, holding hands at the edge of the clearing, facing toward the cottage rather than toward you, which keeps the focus on the glowing building. Paint the cottage walls in warm gingerbread brown with the candy shapes picked out in small dabs of pink, red and cream, leaving the dark trees around it nearly black by comparison.

This scene crowds fast if every candy shape gets outlined individually, so ink only a third of them and let color alone suggest the rest. If you do not have a bright pink in your set, mix a little red into white gouache or leave those shapes as pure thin washes instead.

One light glowing in a single window pulls the whole piece together, so save that warm yellow for last.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Dusty Pink,Payne’s Grey,Naples Yellow

Turn now to a single figure study: a queen gazing into her magic mirror inside a bare stone chamber. Draw the mirror’s frame first as an ornate oval, since getting its symmetry right matters more here than almost anywhere else in the set, so measure both sides against a light pencil centerline before inking.

Ink the queen’s profile in a few clean, confident lines rather than many small ones, keeping her expression unreadable and still, which suits this subject better than any dramatic face would. Paint her gown in deep plum or wine, then leave the mirror’s glass as a pale, cool wash with one streak of lighter color across it to suggest reflection.

The mirror frame tends to go lopsided if you ink it in one pass, so build it in two light pencil passes checking the symmetry before a single drop of ink goes down. No gold paint for the frame, yellow ochre with a touch of burnt sienna reads just as rich.

Keep the stone chamber behind her nearly empty, letting the mirror and her figure carry the whole piece.

Palette: Plum,Yellow Ochre,Payne’s Grey,Cool Grey

Keep the stillness going with a dark-haired girl asleep in a glass coffin set among wildflowers. Draw the coffin’s shape first as a simple elongated hexagon, then place her figure inside it lying flat, with her hair spread out dark against the pale lining.

Ink her features gently, eyes closed with just one soft curved line each, and keep the glass itself mostly unpainted paper with a few thin cool-grey streaks to suggest its surface catching light. Paint the wildflowers scattered around the coffin’s base in loose, varied little dabs of color, more impression than individual petals.

Where this scene often fails is an overworked glass surface that ends up looking solid rather than transparent, so resist adding more than a few careful lines to it. Without a fine brush for those glass streaks, the edge of a dry credit card or old brush handle dragged lightly through wet paint can lift a similar streak.

Let her dark hair be the one strong dark shape in an otherwise pale, quiet piece.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Raw Umber,Rose Madder,White (paper)

After a still scene, bring back motion with seven little men carrying lanterns, walking home through the forest at dusk. Rather than drawing seven full figures, simplify: place a few lanterns and hats close together in the front of the group and let the back figures become smaller, simpler shapes fading into the tree line.

Ink the front two or three figures with real detail, a beard line, a tool over the shoulder, and let the rest read as silhouette only, which both saves time and keeps the group readable as a unit. Paint the lanterns in warm gold, the strongest color note in the piece, against a cool blue-violet forest dusk.

Seven figures crowd fast if they are evenly spaced, so bunch them in twos and threes with gaps between the clusters instead of a tidy row. If gold feels too bright straight from the tube, mix yellow ochre with a touch of burnt orange for a softer antique glow.

Keep their path winding rather than straight, which adds a sense of distance still to travel.

Palette: Yellow Ochre,Prussian Blue,Payne’s Grey,Burnt Orange

Switch to a quieter interior with a girl in a nightgown lying awake atop a tall, precarious stack of mattresses. Build the stack first in pencil as a tower of simple rounded rectangles, each one slightly offset from the one below to suggest height and instability before you ink a single line.

Ink each mattress edge separately so the stack reads clearly as many layers rather than one tall block, then paint them in alternating pale tones, cream, soft blue-grey, dusty rose, to keep the height from feeling monotonous. Keep her small figure right at the top, eyes open, hands resting on the blanket, the one point of real detail in the whole piece.

This composition tips over fast if the stack leans even slightly, so check the vertical alignment of both edges against your page border before committing to ink. Without several pale colors in your set, you can vary the mattresses instead with thin wash versus thicker wash of the same single hue.

A tiny pea sketched at the very bottom edge is a nice, quiet detail if you want to include it.

Palette: Dusty Rose,Cool Grey,Naples Yellow,Sepia

Move outdoors again with a boy climbing a giant beanstalk up into the clouds, a composition built entirely around verticals. Draw the beanstalk first as one strong, slightly curving line filling most of the page height, then add its oversized leaves in clusters along the way rather than evenly spaced like a real vine.

Ink the boy small and mid-climb, one arm reaching up past the frame’s top edge if you like, to push the sense of scale against the enormous plant around him. Paint the beanstalk in rich green with darker shadow along one side to show it curving in space, then let the clouds above fade from soft grey to white as they near the top of the page.

Scale is the whole point of this scene, so keep checking the boy’s size against a single leaf; if he is bigger than a leaf, the beanstalk stops looking giant. If your green feels too flat and cartoonish, add a touch of Payne’s grey to mute it toward that antique storybook tone.

Let a little mist or cloud cut across the stalk partway up to suggest real height beyond the page.

Palette: Sap Green,Payne’s Grey,Davy’s Grey,White (paper)

Bring in a little comedy with a cat in tall boots and a plumed hat, bowing low before a seated king. Draw the king first on his simple throne, kept large and still, then place the cat small in front of him mid-bow, hat swept down in one hand.

Ink the cat’s boots and hat with real flourish, since the costume is the whole joke of this subject, while his face stays simple, just a few whisker lines and dot eyes. Paint the king’s robe in deep red or purple to anchor the composition, then keep the cat’s boots in warm brown leather tones against his own soft grey fur.

Comedy figures lose their charm if drawn too stiffly, so loosen your ink line on the cat especially, letting his bow have real curve and movement through the spine. If deep purple is not mixed in your set, alizarin crimson with a touch of Payne’s grey gets close enough for a storybook plate.

Keep the throne room bare behind them so the two figures carry the whole scene.

Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Burnt Sienna,Cool Grey,Yellow Ochre

Keep the warmth going indoors with a girl with golden curls tasting porridge from the smallest of three bowls at a wooden table. Draw the three bowls first in graduated sizes along the table edge, checking that the size difference between each one is clear before you ink a single outline.

Ink her figure leaning over the smallest bowl, spoon raised, hair in loose ringlet curls that take a little extra ink time but carry much of the charm of the piece. Paint the porridge in warm cream with a thin brown wash around each bowl’s inner rim, then keep the wooden table in simple, muted brown with visible grain lines scratched in with the tip of your brush handle.

The three bowls read as nearly identical if their size difference is too subtle, so make the smallest noticeably smaller rather than just slightly so. Without a scratch tool for the wood grain, a few dry-brush strokes in a darker brown give a similar textured feel.

Give her curls one bright highlight left as untouched paper for extra shine.

You Will Need

• wooden brush handle or similar scratch tool for wood grain (optional)

Palette: Naples Yellow,Raw Umber,Burnt Sienna,White (paper)

Follow the comic cat with another costumed animal: a wolf in a frilly nightcap lying in grandmother’s bed, blanket pulled up to his chin. Draw the bed and its headboard first as the frame for the whole composition, then fit the wolf’s long shape under the blanket with just his head, ears and nightcap visible above it.

Ink the nightcap’s frills with small, repeated loose curves, the one place in this scene worth real detail, while the blanket stays a few simple folded lines. Paint the wolf’s fur in grey with a slightly darker muzzle, then let the nightcap stay soft white or pale cream to contrast against it.

His eyes are the whole joke here, too wide and too alert for an innocent grandmother, so spend extra care getting that slightly unsettling, knowing expression right before you ink anything else. If frilled trim feels fiddly with a dip pen, a fine fineliner gives you steadier control for those small repeated curves.

Leave his ears poking up sharply through the cap for the giveaway silhouette.

Palette: Cool Grey,Payne’s Grey,White (paper),Dusty Pink

Return to a quiet, concentrated figure with a miller’s daughter spinning straw into gold by candlelight. Draw the spinning wheel first as the structural center of the piece, its wheel a careful circle you may want to trace around a small plate or jar lid for a clean curve.

Ink her figure seated close beside it, hands at the thread, head bent in concentration, then paint the straw around her in dry, pale yellow-brown and the finished thread as it winds onto the spool in bright metallic gold. Keep the room dim and candlelit, with warm orange glow falling only on her hands and the wheel, everything else sinking into shadow.

Round objects like a spinning wheel go crooked fast when drawn freehand, so trace the wheel shape with a round object before inking its spokes by hand on top. Without real gold paint, yellow ochre mixed with a touch of white gouache catches a similar glint.

Let candlelight be the brightest value on the whole page so the gold thread truly seems to glow.

You Will Need

• small plate or jar lid to trace the spinning wheel

Palette: Yellow Ochre,Burnt Orange,Payne’s Grey,Raw Umber

Bring energy back with a little man dancing around a fire alone in the night forest. Draw the fire first as the bright center of the composition, a simple layered flame shape, then place him mid-leap around it with one leg kicked high and arms flung wide.

Ink his pose with real exaggeration, a dancing figure only works if the line has genuine movement through it, so draw fast and loose rather than careful here. Paint the fire in hot orange and yellow, the single warmest note in the whole set, with the surrounding trees and ground kept cool and dark by comparison.

Dancing figures stiffen if every limb is drawn at a careful, even angle, so sketch two or three quick versions of his pose on scrap paper before committing one to ink. If you do not have a bright true yellow, cadmium orange alone pushed close to the flame’s center reads just as hot.

Try this scene again later with him mid-spin instead of mid-leap, to see how differently the same fire and forest feel.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Cadmium Yellow,Payne’s Grey,Sap Green

Move to open water with a mermaid seated on a rock, watching a tall ship sail past in the distance. Draw the rock and her figure first, close to the viewer and large in the frame, then place the ship small and far off near the horizon line to set up the scale between the two.

Ink her tail in long, flowing scale lines that curve with its shape rather than running straight across it, and keep the ship as a simple silhouette of hull and sails with almost no interior detail. Paint the sea in graduated blue-green, darker near her rock and paler toward the horizon, which pulls the eye naturally out toward the ship.

The composition flattens if the ship sits dead center on the horizon, so shift it a third of the way across the page instead, leaving open water on the other side for her gaze to cross. Without a true blue-green in your set, mix Prussian blue with a touch of sap green for the same antique sea tone.

Let her hair fall loose and wind-blown toward the ship to connect the two halves of the scene.

Palette: Prussian Blue,Sap Green,Payne’s Grey,Naples Yellow

Return to a lone figure in motion with a girl in red shoes dancing alone through a dark wood. Draw her mid-step first, one leg extended, skirt flared by the movement, before adding a single ring of trees around her that frame rather than crowd the figure.

Ink her shoes with extra care since they are the whole point of the subject, a small confident shape in deep red, then keep the rest of her dress in simple pale tones so the eye returns to her feet. Paint the woods around her in near-black blue-green, the darkest value in the whole set, so the red shoes glow by contrast.

If her dancing pose looks static rather than wild, check that her weight is clearly on one leg with the other kicked out at a real angle, not just standing with legs apart. Without a strong confident red in your palette, two thin layers of a lighter red built up slowly reach the same deep tone.

Leave the trees’ trunks as dark ink shapes with no inner detail at all, letting the shoes be the only bright thing on the page.

Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Payne’s Grey,Prussian Blue,White (paper)

Bring a sense of forward motion with a prince on horseback cutting through a tall hedge of briars. Draw the horse first, rearing slightly with front legs lifted, then build the briar hedge around and in front of it as a tangle of curving thorned lines that seem to part just ahead of the horse’s path.

Ink the thorns as small, sharp single strokes rather than drawn outlines, which reads faster and feels more dangerous than a careful double line would. Paint the horse in warm brown with the prince’s cloak in one strong color, deep red or blue, standing out clearly against the dull green-grey of the briars.

Horses in motion lose believability fast if the legs look frozen, so study the angle of a rearing horse’s front legs before inking, keeping both front legs bent rather than one straight and stiff. If a strong cloak color is not mixed yet, a single layer of pure pigment straight from the pan, barely diluted, gives the boldest result.

Let a few briar branches snap and curl loosely across the very front of the frame for depth.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Prussian Blue,Sap Green,Payne’s Grey

After a scene of violent motion, settle into wonder with a girl holding out her apron as stars fall into it like coins. Draw her figure first, apron held wide with both hands, head tilted up toward the sky she is catching from.

Ink the falling stars as simple small shapes, some five-pointed, some just soft dots, falling at varied angles rather than in a neat straight line, which keeps the motion believable. Paint the night sky in deep blue-violet behind her, then leave the stars and her upturned face as the brightest, palest points in the whole composition.

Stars falling too evenly in a grid pattern flattens the magic of this scene, so scatter them with real variation in size and spacing, denser near the top of the page and thinner as they near her apron. Without metallic gold paint for extra shine on a few stars, a white gel pen added after the watercolor dries gives a similar glint.

Keep her apron pale so the gold-toned stars inside it read as the warmest color on the page.

You Will Need

• white gel pen for star highlights

Palette: Prussian Blue,Payne’s Grey,Naples Yellow,White (paper)

Move into a slower, tender scene with a beast in a velvet coat walking a girl through a winter garden. Draw the two figures first side by side, his large shape set deliberately against her small one, with bare winter trees and a low garden wall behind them for setting.

Ink his coat with a few decorative details, a collar or cuff, to suggest the velvet without overworking his fur, which should stay loose and textural instead. Paint his coat in deep burgundy or forest green against his brown-grey fur, then keep the winter garden pale, soft grey-blue snow and bare brown branches, so the two figures stand out clearly against it.

The size contrast is the heart of this subject, so measure his shoulder height against hers in pencil before inking, keeping him noticeably but not grotesquely larger. If burgundy velvet is not mixed, alizarin crimson with a touch of Payne’s grey gives a similarly rich, muted coat color.

Let a few bare branches arch gently over both figures to frame them as a pair.

Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Raw Umber,Cool Grey,Payne’s Grey

Rest on a quiet, almost portrait-like moment with a girl holding a single rose in an enchanted garden at dusk. Draw her figure centered and still, the rose held close to her chest in both hands, then build the garden around her loosely so nothing competes with that one small flower.

Ink the rose itself with the most care in the whole piece, its petals in a few curved overlapping lines, since it is the smallest shape but the emotional center of the composition. Paint the dusk sky behind her in graduated violet and dusty orange, then keep her dress in a single muted color so the rose’s red reads as the one saturated note on the page.

This scene feels flat if the rose is painted the same intensity as everything around it, so mix your reddest, most saturated color for just that one shape and mute everything else by comparison. Without a dedicated dusk palette ready mixed, a wash of violet laid wet-into-wet with a touch of orange at the horizon creates the gradient in one pass.

Let her eyes stay closed or gently lowered toward the rose rather than looking out at the viewer.

Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Dusty Orange,Plum,Sap Green

Try this same pose again later with the rose already wilting, a few petals loose at her feet, for a quieter, more bittersweet version of the scene.

Shrink the scale right down with a one-legged tin soldier gazing up at a small paper dancer across a tabletop. Draw the soldier first, standing stiff and small, his one leg clearly straight and the missing leg’s space left open rather than hidden, then place the paper dancer’s figure a little above and apart from him to suggest distance between a toy on a table and a figure set higher up.

Ink his uniform in crisp, straight lines fitting his stiff toy nature, then paint him in simple red and black with just a dab of gold at the buttons. Keep the paper dancer pale and flat-looking, almost like cut paper rather than a real figure, to emphasize that she, too, is not quite alive.

His single leg is easy to get wrong if the remaining leg sits dead center, so place it slightly to one side as if he is balancing, which reads more convincingly than a perfectly centered stance. If gold paint is not available, a thin yellow ochre line does the same small job.

Keep the whole background plain so the quiet distance between the two figures carries the piece.

Palette: Alizarin Crimson,Payne’s Grey,Yellow Ochre,White (paper)

Move to a colder, quieter scene with a little girl holding a bundle of matches on a snowy street corner at night. Draw her small figure first, shoulders hunched, bundle of thin matchsticks held in both hands, then build the snowy street and a few dark building shapes behind her to set the cold, bare setting.

Ink her thin coat and bare feet with slightly broken lines to suggest the cold without a single written word of explanation, then paint the snow in cool white and pale blue-grey, the coldest palette in your whole set. Keep one small warm glow in a distant window behind her, the single note of warmth in an otherwise icy scene.

The emotional weight of this piece depends on scale, so keep her notably small against the tall, dark buildings rather than filling the frame with her figure alone. Without pale blue-grey ready mixed, a thin wash of Payne’s grey over damp paper gives a similarly cold, soft shadow.

Let the falling snow be a few scattered white dots added last with the tip of a dry brush.

Palette: Cool Grey,Payne’s Grey,Naples Yellow,White (paper)

After a scene with a figure, try one built on a path alone: a trail of small white pebbles shining in moonlight along a dark forest path. Draw the path curving away into the trees first, then place the pebbles as a scattered line along it, denser near the viewer and sparser as the path recedes into the distance.

Ink the surrounding trees as tall, simple dark shapes with almost no detail, saving all your attention for the small circles of the pebbles themselves. Paint the forest floor and trees in near-black blue, then leave the pebbles as pure untouched white paper, each with one tiny grey shadow beneath it to seat it on the ground.

The trail loses its glow if the pebbles are painted rather than left bare, so resist any urge to add color to them at all, even a pale wash dulls the effect you are after. If your paper already has a slight cream tone, that only helps the moonlit pebbles feel even more antique.

Let the path curve slightly off to one side rather than running straight down the page for a more natural, wandering feel.

Palette: Prussian Blue,Payne’s Grey,Sepia,White (paper)

Bring back a figure with real intent in a fairy godmother raising her wand over a pumpkin sitting in a garden bed. Draw the pumpkin first, round and solid, then place her figure beside it mid-gesture, wand arm raised high and robes caught mid-swirl to suggest the moment of transformation rather than a still pose.

Ink her robes with loose, sweeping lines that curve outward from her raised arm, since the whole energy of this scene depends on that sense of motion radiating from her gesture. Paint a soft ring of sparkling light around the wand’s tip in pale gold, the brightest point on the page, while the pumpkin stays warm orange and the garden around them settles into muted evening green.

This scene flattens if her pose is too stiff and symmetrical, so tilt her slightly off balance as if genuinely caught in the act of a spell rather than posing for a portrait. Without metallic gold for the sparkle, a cluster of small white dots radiating from the wand’s tip reads just as magical.

Finish by adding a few sparkles trailing down toward the pumpkin itself to connect gesture and subject.

Palette: Naples Yellow,Cadmium Orange,Sap Green,Plum

Return indoors for a scene full of small activity: a shoemaker asleep at his bench while tiny elves finish the shoes for him. Draw the shoemaker large and still first, head resting on his folded arms, then scatter several small elves around the bench below him, each caught mid-task with a tiny hammer or thread.

Ink the sleeping shoemaker with soft, loose lines to suggest deep, comfortable sleep, then give the elves sharper, busier little outlines so the contrast between stillness above and activity below reads clearly. Paint the finished shoes in warm leather brown, lined up neatly in a row that grows a little as you move along the bench to show their progress.

Too many identical elves flattens the charm of this scene, so vary their poses, one hammering, one stitching, one simply watching, rather than repeating the same figure several times. If brown leather tones feel muddy, add a touch of burnt sienna rather than more black to keep the shoes warm instead of dull.

Leave one single candle burning low on the bench as the only light source for the whole scene.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Raw Umber,Naples Yellow,Payne’s Grey

Close the set at a tower window again, this time with release rather than longing: a princess letting a white dove fly free from a high window. Draw the window frame first, stone and simple, then place her figure leaning slightly out of it, arms open as the dove lifts off her hands into open sky.

Ink the dove in a few clean curved lines, wings spread wide and caught mid-lift, the only truly white shape against the warmer stone and sky around it. Paint the sky beyond the window in soft dawn colors, pale pink and gold, a gentler light than most of the darker scenes earlier in this set, to close things on a note of release rather than mystery.

Her gesture reads as stiff if her arms are kept too close to her body, so push them further out and slightly upward, following the dove’s lift, to carry real motion through the whole composition. Without pale pink and gold ready mixed for the dawn sky, a thin wash of Naples yellow laid first, with a touch of rose madder dropped in while still wet, blends the two softly in one pass.

Let a little of the tower’s dark stone frame the window’s edge so the open sky beyond feels even brighter by contrast.

Palette: Naples Yellow,Rose Madder,Davy’s Grey,White (paper)

Pair this piece with the earlier tower and braid scene when you display them, since the two windows make a natural beginning and end for a small fairytale series.

What to Do Next

Pick one scene that pulls at you most, whether that is the red cape on the forest path or the dove released from the tower, and start today with a light pencil sketch on hot press watercolor paper. Keep the ink fine, the color muted, and let the page breathe some plain parchment around the subject, the way every real storybook plate does.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paper works best for an old fairytale illustration in this style?

Hot press watercolor paper works best, since its smooth surface lets fine ink lines stay crisp while still taking a soft wash of color without too much texture fighting the detail.

Should you ink first or paint first for this storybook look?

Ink first, always. Laying the fine sepia lines down before any color keeps the drawing clean and lets the watercolor settle in as a loose wash around it, the way old printed plates worked.

How do you keep the colors looking antique rather than bright?

Mute every color slightly with a touch of its opposite or a little Payne’s grey before using it, rather than reaching for pigments straight from the tube, which reads as too modern and saturated.

What if a dip pen feels too hard to control at first?

A fine fineliner pen gives nearly the same crisp sepia line with far more control, and it is a perfectly good substitute while your hand gets used to this style of drawing.

Can these scenes work in colored pencil instead of watercolor?

Yes, though the loose antique wash effect softens into something crisper and more graphic; keep the same muted palette and fine ink outline for the closest match to the storybook look.
