A hug doodle is the fastest way to put a whole feeling into a tiny drawing: two shapes leaning into each other, eyes squeezed shut, and somehow the page feels warmer. These are quick notebook sketches, not finished illustrations, so you can knock one out between errands and still end up with something worth keeping.
Below you will find 27 of them, from a pair of sleepy kittens to a sock reunited with its missing match. Grab a black fineliner and let rose pink and butter yellow markers do the rest, and work down the list from the simplest hugs to the fiddlier ones once you get going.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start the whole hug doodle habit with something soft: two kittens wrapped around each other, eyes squeezed shut in little curved lines. Draw two rounded blob bodies leaning toward each other first, overlapping slightly in the middle, before adding ears, tails and paws.
Keep the faces tiny: two curved lashes for closed eyes and a small w for the mouth is plenty. Where the bodies overlap, let one outline break so the kitten in front reads as closer, a simple trick that keeps the hug from looking flat.
If the paws look stiff, round every corner and let them curl rather than point. Color the fur patches with rose pink in a few flat strokes, leaving white paper for the brightest spots.
Draw the pair small, no bigger than a thumbprint, so the whole hug sits inside one easy glance.

Move from kittens to something bigger: a bear wrapped around a tree trunk, head tipped back in a happy sigh. Block the trunk in first as a simple tall oval, then draw the bear’s round body pressed against one side with both arms reaching around it.
The trick that saves this pose is measuring the bear’s arm span against the trunk width before you commit to ink: if the arms do not quite meet, that gap is fine, it just means the hug is a real squeeze.
Add a few short curved lines above the bear’s head for the sigh, and bark texture on the trunk with short vertical fineliner marks rather than one long scribble.
Swap the tree for a fence post if you want a smaller, quicker version of the same pose.

Give an object a hug next: a steaming mug of cocoa leaning into a round cookie, both with small stick arms wrapped around each other. Draw the mug as a simple cylinder with a curved handle, then the cookie as a flattened circle with a few dot chips, before giving each one a pair of thin arm lines that meet in the middle.
Steam lines above the mug are where beginners often overdo it: two or three short wavy lines read as warm, a whole cloud of them just looks messy.
Color the cocoa itself with butter yellow for the foam line at the top and keep the mug body white or rose pink. If you do not have a brown marker for the cookie dots, a fineliner alone reads just fine as chocolate chips.
Finish with closed-eye lashes on both for that squeezed-tight look.

Scale is the whole joke here, so draw the big dog first as a simple rounded body with floppy ears, then size the chihuahua at roughly a third of that height before you ink either one. That one comparison, big dog’s paw against chihuahua’s whole body, is what makes the size gap read instantly.
Wrap one of the big dog’s front legs fully around the little one rather than just touching, so the hug feels complete rather than a pat on the back.
Where the two outlines overlap at the chihuahua’s shoulder, break the big dog’s line slightly so the smaller body reads as tucked in front.
Color the big dog in a warm tan with butter yellow and leave the chihuahua mostly white with rose pink ear tips, so your eye still finds the small one first.
For a set of best friend doodles with the same warm feeling, the card ideas for your best friend page has more pairs worth sketching.

Every hug doodle list needs one object pair that tells its own tiny story, and a lost sock hugging its match works perfectly. Draw both socks as simple curved rectangles with a rounded toe and heel bend, then give each one two thin arm lines that cross over in a tight hug.
Draw the pair leaning toward each other at an angle rather than standing straight up, which is what makes the reunion read as a run-and-grab moment instead of two socks just standing side by side.
Add a striped cuff in rose pink on one sock and butter yellow on the other so they read as a true mismatched pair finally together. A few small motion lines behind the running sock finish the story.
If stripes feel fiddly, a single solid color block on each cuff works just as well.

Lean into the joke of two slow animals here: a sloth wrapped around a koala in what is clearly taking forever. Light matters for this one, so decide where an imaginary sun sits above the pair and let both animals’ faces squint gently toward it, which sells the lazy, half-asleep mood better than any detail could.
Draw the koala’s round body first, then the sloth’s longer curved arms wrapping around it from behind, each claw drawn as three or four short lines rather than sharp points.
Keep both faces loose and half closed, more squint than full smile. If claws feel tricky, round them into soft paw shapes instead, nobody will mind.
Shade the sloth’s fur with light butter yellow streaks and leave the koala a soft grey.

Jars make an easy, very huggable shape, so pair a peanut butter jar with a jelly jar leaning into each other, lids slightly tilted like heads. Draw both as simple rounded rectangles with a narrower neck and a lid on top, then give each a thin pair of arms that wrap around the other’s middle.
Ten minutes gets you the basic hug: two jars, two faces, done. The forty minute version adds a label on each jar with a tiny hand-lettered word and a sticky drip line near the lid, small extras that make the joke land harder without changing the pose.
Color the peanut butter jar butter yellow and the jelly jar rose pink, keeping both lids a plain outline so they read as metal rather than colored plastic.
Draw the jars slightly tilted toward each other rather than perfectly upright, which is what sells the hug.
Palette: Butter Yellow,Rose Pink,Soft Grey
Give the sky a turn: a small star wrapped around one point of a crescent moon, both with closed, happy eyes. Draw the crescent first as two curved lines meeting at each tip, then size the star at about a third of the moon’s height before adding its arms, so the hug looks snug rather than swallowed.
Draw the star’s arms curling around the thinnest part of the crescent, since that is where a hug naturally fits without the shapes overlapping awkwardly.
A few short line rays around the star and three or four tiny dot stars scattered nearby finish the sky without any extra detail needed.
Color the moon butter yellow and leave the star white with a rose pink blush on its cheeks, so the two colors stay separate and clear.

If you like this kind of tiny sky scene, the ideas in greeting card ideas cover a few more gentle night sky pairings worth sketching.
Bring a person into the mix here: a girl hugging her cat tightly while the cat’s face stays completely flat. Draw the girl’s simple rounded body and head first, arms wrapped fully around the cat’s middle, then draw the cat stiff and straight-backed rather than curved into the hug, which is exactly what sells the joke.
The expression carries this whole doodle, so give the girl closed, happy eyes and a wide smile, then give the cat two small flat dots for eyes and a straight line mouth, no curve at all.
If the cat’s stiff pose looks awkward, that awkwardness is the point here, so resist the urge to soften it.
Color the girl’s hair or sweater in rose pink and leave the cat a plain grey or tan so it reads as unbothered by the fuss.
Palette: Rose Pink,Soft Grey,Warm Tan
Objects left by the door make a quietly funny hug doodle: a pair of slippers leaning together, one toe tucked slightly under the other. Draw both slippers as simple rounded ovals with a soft opening at the back, then tilt them toward each other at the toe so they look like they have shuffled close rather than been placed that way.
Edges matter most on this one, since slippers are soft fabric, not stiff objects. Keep every outline loose and slightly wavy rather than a hard clean curve, and add two or three short fuzzy marks along the rim to suggest a fleece lining.
A tiny welcome mat line or doorframe corner in the background places the scene without needing more detail.
Color one slipper rose pink and the other butter yellow so the pair reads as two individuals, not a matching set.
Palette: Rose Pink,Butter Yellow,Soft Grey
Scale flips the usual joke this time: a small hamster wrapped around a sunflower seed drawn bigger than its own body. Draw the seed first as a long pointed oval with a few straight hull lines, then size the hamster at roughly two thirds that length before adding its round cheeks and tiny paws gripping the seed’s sides.
Keep the hamster’s cheeks extra puffed and its paws small, since the contrast between a chunky round body and a thin pointed seed is what makes this doodle work.
If the seed’s pointed tip looks too sharp next to the soft hamster, round it slightly, a hamster hugging anything should look cozy, not like it is holding a weapon.
Color the seed in soft grey with thin dark stripes and leave the hamster warm tan with rose pink ear insides.
More chubby-cheeked poses like this one live in the hamster doodle collection if this is a subject you want to keep drawing.

Play with gentleness through sheer scale contrast: a big hippo curling its heavy arms very carefully around a tiny bird. Draw the hippo’s wide rounded body first, then draw its arms loosely wrapped rather than fully closed, leaving a visible gap around the bird so the hug reads as careful rather than crushing.
The eye level matters here: draw the hippo’s eyes looking down and slightly closed, soft rather than wide open, which keeps the whole pose tender instead of comic.
Give the bird small round wings tucked close to its body and a tiny closed-eye expression to match the hippo’s calm.
Color the hippo in a muted grey-purple and leave the bird in rose pink with a butter yellow beak, so the small one stays the brightest thing on the page.
Palette: Soft Grey,Rose Pink,Butter Yellow
Give two drinks the same treatment as the jars earlier: bubble tea cups leaning together with their straws touching at the top like a little kiss. Draw each cup as a tall rounded rectangle with a domed lid and a straight straw poking through, then angle both cups inward so the straws meet in the middle.
Draw the tapioca pearls at the bottom of each cup as a cluster of small dots rather than one solid blob, which keeps them reading as individual bubbles even at a tiny size.
If pearls feel fiddly, three or four dots are plenty, you do not need to fill the whole cup bottom.
Color one cup’s drink rose pink and the other butter yellow, with a clear white gap for the lid on both so the colors stay crisp.

Slow the mood down with a sleeping cat curled around a soft fish plushie toy. Draw the cat first as one long curved comma shape, tail wrapped around, then tuck the fish plushie against its chest with the cat’s front paw draped loosely over the top.
Ten minutes gets the basic curled shape and a closed-eye face. The forty minute version adds a few short fur tufts along the cat’s back and simple fin and scale lines on the fish plushie, small texture that makes the whole thing look settled rather than sketched in a hurry.
If the curled body looks stiff, loosen the spine line into a soft s-curve rather than one even arc.
Color the cat in warm tan with rose pink ear insides and give the fish plushie a soft butter yellow body.

Keep the scale joke running with a puppy wrapped around a bone drawn almost as long as its own body. Draw the bone first as a thick bar with rounded knobs at each end, then size the puppy so its front paws reach only partway around, both arms stretched to show real effort.
A round belly and short stubby legs read as puppy rather than full grown dog, so keep proportions chunky and compact rather than long and lean.
If the bone’s knobbed ends look lumpy, simplify each one into a plain rounded ball shape instead of trying to carve detail into it.
Color the puppy in warm tan with rose pink paw pads and leave the bone a flat butter yellow or plain white outline.

Cozy pairs work well here, so try a teddy bear curled around a hot water bottle shaped like a flattened oval with a small screw cap at the top. Draw the bottle first since its shape sets the size, then wrap the bear’s round arms and body around it, legs tucked to one side.
If you do not have a rose pink marker handy for the bottle, any warm color works, the point is a clear contrast between the bear’s fur tone and the bottle’s flat surface.
Give the bear simple stitched seams at the arm and leg joints with a few short cross lines, a classic teddy detail that takes seconds to add.
Keep the cap small and round, since an oversized cap tends to throw the whole proportion off.
For more cozy bear poses to try next, the teddy bear watercolor ideas carry the same warm, huggable feeling into paint.

Switch the size relationship again: a koala clinging tight to a person’s leg, refusing to let go. Draw the leg first as a simple straight shape from knee to ankle, in trousers or bare, then wrap the koala’s round body and all four limbs fully around it, claws hooked in rather than resting.
Compare the koala’s body width to the leg’s width before inking, a koala drawn too large will look like it is wearing the leg rather than clinging to it.
Keep the person’s leg cropped at the knee, no need to draw a whole figure, which keeps the focus entirely on the stubborn koala.
Color the koala in soft grey with rose pink ear insides and leave the leg a plain outline or light butter yellow for a trouser leg.
Palette: Soft Grey,Rose Pink,Butter Yellow
Build a tiny scene around a pair of mice sharing shelter: two mice hugging under one oversized leaf held above them like an umbrella. Draw the leaf first as a single large curved shape with a center vein line, then draw both mice underneath, bodies pressed together, with one small paw each reaching up to hold the leaf’s stem.
Size the leaf at least twice the height of either mouse, since a leaf drawn too small will look like a hat rather than shelter.
Keep both mouse tails curled gently to one side rather than straight out, which reads as settled and safe instead of alert.
Color the leaf in a soft green if you have it, or leave it a plain outline, and give both mice warm tan fur with rose pink ears.
Palette: Warm Tan,Rose Pink,Soft Grey
Strip the whole idea down to its simplest form: three round, squishy blob characters piled into one group hug. Draw the middle blob first as a plain circle, then draw the two side blobs overlapping it from each side, arms wrapping around whatever is in reach.
Vary each blob’s size slightly, one a touch bigger, one a touch smaller, since three identical circles in a row reads as a pattern rather than a hug.
Faces can be as simple as two dots and a curved line on each, closed eyes and a wide smile reading happiest on the one in the middle.
Give each blob a different color, rose pink, butter yellow and a plain grey, so all three stay easy to tell apart even squished together.

If you like doodling simple round characters like these, the posca art doodle ideas cover a lot more bold, simple shapes worth a try.
Fruit makes a cheerful, easy hug pair: a strawberry leaning into a banana’s curve, both with simple stick arms wrapped around each other. Draw the banana first as one long curved shape, since its bend decides how the whole pose leans, then tuck the strawberry into the inside of that curve with its arms reaching up around the banana’s middle.
Keep the strawberry’s seeds as small dashes rather than dots, a few scattered irregularly reads more natural than a tidy grid.
If the banana’s curve looks too stiff, redraw it with a slightly longer, lazier bend, a straighter banana tends to lose the hug shape entirely.
Color the strawberry rose pink with a butter yellow leafy top, and leave the banana a plain butter yellow outline with a few thin brown spot marks.
Palette: Rose Pink,Butter Yellow,Warm Brown
Push the size joke to its funniest point: a big bear squeezing a small bear so tight its cheeks puff out to each side. Draw the big bear’s wide rounded body first, arms fully wrapped and overlapping in front, then draw the small bear’s head poking out at the top with both cheeks drawn as extra bumps beyond the normal head outline.
That cheek-bump trick is the whole joke here, so exaggerate it more than feels natural, a small puff reads as nothing, a big one reads as a proper squeeze.
Keep the small bear’s eyes as simple closed curves and its mouth tiny, since a bigger mouth competes with the cheek shape for attention.
Color the big bear warm brown and the small bear a lighter tan with rose pink cheeks to really sell the squish.
Palette: Warm Brown,Warm Tan,Rose Pink
Give the hug theme a shy character: a snail peeking just far enough out of its shell to accept a hug from one small reaching arm. Draw the shell first as a tight spiral, then draw the snail’s body peeking out barely past the shell’s edge, head tilted slightly down and one small arm extended outward.
Keep the body mostly hidden, only the head and one tiny arm showing, since a snail drawn fully out of its shell loses the shy character entirely.
If the spiral shell feels tricky to draw clean, start from the center and work outward in one continuous curved line rather than lifting the pen partway through.
Color the shell in rose pink spiral bands and leave the snail’s body a soft butter yellow, with tiny closed eyes on its stalks.
Palette: Rose Pink,Butter Yellow,Soft Grey
Here is the texture idea of the list: two little potted cacti hugging very carefully, both wincing at the spines. Draw each cactus as a simple rounded barrel shape in its own small pot, then draw their arms reaching toward each other but barely touching, fingertips just grazing.
Spines are where the texture trick matters: press the fineliner down hard for short, slightly uneven marks rather than a neat row of even dashes, since real cactus spines never line up perfectly.
Give both cacti a tight, squinting expression rather than a relaxed one, eyebrows pinched, to sell the careful wince.
Color the cacti a soft green if available, or leave them outlined, and give each pot a flat butter yellow or rose pink band for a bit of warmth.
Palette: Soft Grey,Butter Yellow,Rose Pink
Bring in a proper reunion scene: a dog launching into a hug at the door, tail drawn as one blurred streak rather than a clean shape. Draw the person’s legs and lower body first, cropped at the waist, then draw the dog up on its hind legs with front paws braced against the person’s chest.
That blurred tail is the one texture trick worth learning here: instead of one clean tail shape, draw three or four overlapping curved lines fanning out behind the dog, which reads instantly as fast motion rather than a still pose.
Keep the person’s arms open and reaching down to meet the dog rather than hanging at their sides, which completes the hug on both ends.
Color the dog warm tan and give the person’s sleeve a rose pink accent, leaving the doorway itself a plain outline.
Palette: Warm Tan,Rose Pink,Soft Grey
More doodle scenes with this same quick, story-driven feel live in sketchbook art inspiration, worth a look once you are warmed up.
Add a gentle family moment: a mother cat wrapping both front paws around a kitten still a little damp from a bath. Draw the mother cat’s larger rounded body first, curled protectively, then tuck the smaller kitten against her chest with a few short wavy lines on its fur to suggest it is still slightly wet.
If this is your first time drawing damp fur, keep those wavy lines short and only in a few clumps near the head and back rather than covering the whole kitten, which keeps it readable as a kitten and not a strange texture.
Give the mother cat’s eyes a soft half-closed look and the kitten’s eyes fully shut, since the size and alertness difference is what sells the parent-child dynamic.
Color the mother cat in warm tan and the kitten slightly lighter, with rose pink ear insides on both.
Palette: Warm Tan,Rose Pink,Soft Grey
Close the food pairings with a dumpling leaning into a small round soy sauce dish, one pleated edge resting against the dish’s rim. Draw the dumpling first as a rounded crescent with a row of small pleats along the top edge, then draw the dish as a flattened oval beside it, tilted slightly so the two shapes touch naturally.
Keep the pleats simple, four or five short curved marks along the top rather than a fully detailed fold pattern, since too much pleat detail competes with the simple hug pose.
Give the dumpling two small stick arms wrapping partway around the dish’s rim, as far as its round body allows.
Color the dumpling a pale butter yellow and fill the dish with a flat rose pink or deeper red-brown if you have it, keeping the rim a plain outline.
Palette: Butter Yellow,Rose Pink,Warm Brown
End on a quiet, funny note: a sleepy kitten wrapped around an alarm clock as if hugging it will keep it from ringing. Draw the clock first as a simple round face with two small bell shapes on top and short legs underneath, then curl the kitten’s body around it, one paw pressed flat over the bells.
Once this pose works, vary it next time by swapping the alarm clock for a phone, a remote control or a houseplant, the same curled-kitten-hugging-an-object setup works for almost anything round or rectangular.
Keep the kitten’s eyes fully closed and its body drawn as one soft curved comma shape rather than separate head and body circles, which keeps the whole thing feeling properly asleep.
Color the clock a flat butter yellow with rose pink bells and leave the kitten in soft grey with a few short fur tufts along its back.
Palette: Butter Yellow,Rose Pink,Soft Grey

What to Do Next
Pick one hug doodle from the list, the two kittens or the reunited socks are the easiest starting points, and sketch it small on plain or dot grid paper before you touch a marker. Once the pose feels comfortable, work through a few more from the list in the same sitting, they take only minutes each.
Frequently Asked Questions
What pens work best for a hug doodle?
A black fineliner in a fine tip, around 0.3 to 0.5, gives the cleanest outline for hug doodles. Add two alcohol or dual-tip markers in rose pink and butter yellow for quick flat color accents on top.
How do I make a hug doodle look soft instead of stiff?
Round every corner and keep outlines slightly wavy rather than ruler-straight. Overlapping arms and bodies, with one line breaking where shapes cross, reads as a real embrace rather than two figures just touching.
Do I need to shade a hug doodle?
No, these stay as flat line drawings with a few marker accents, not fully shaded pieces. A little color on cheeks, ears or an object’s surface is enough to finish one in a single short sitting.
What if I only have a black pen and no markers?
A hug doodle works fine in black fineliner alone. Leave the color steps out and instead vary line weight, a slightly thicker outline on the front figure, to separate the two huggers.
How big should each hug doodle be?
Keep each one small, roughly the size of a large postage stamp to a playing card. Hug doodles are meant to read in one glance, and a smaller size naturally keeps the shapes simple and the details few.
