34 Thanksgiving Doodles for Place Cards, Napkins and Kids’ Placemats

Thanksgiving doodles turn a plain place card, napkin or kids’ placemat into something a child helped make herself, with just a black fineliner and two markers. Every idea here uses the same three tools: fineliner for the outline, burnt orange and mustard for the color, so nothing extra needs to come out of the craft box.

Each of the 34 ideas below has a simple version a child can finish alone and one small extra an adult can add once the ink is dry. Work down the list from the easiest shapes toward the more detailed scenes, and stop whenever the table needs setting.

Acorn With Tiny Scarf

Reach for a 0.3 fineliner on the acorn’s cap and a slightly thicker 0.5 for the scarf folds, so the two textures read differently even in black and white. A child can trace a simple oval cap and round body with the thin pen, two ovals and nothing fancier.

Hand the mustard marker to the child for the cap, short strokes following its curve, then let an adult add the burnt orange scarf with three thick stripes and a small knot. Keep the scarf wider than it looks right, a chunky scarf reads clearer than a thin one at place card size.

Mini Pumpkin

Start with a flattened circle for the body, not a perfect round one, pumpkins squash sideways. Second mark is the short stem on top, third is one curved line down the middle for the first rib. Everything after that is repetition.

A child can stop there and color the body mustard with the marker. An adult can go back in with the fineliner and add two more curved ribs and a thin burnt orange highlight line along the left edge, where the light would catch it. Draw the stem last every time, never first, it keeps the proportions honest.

Single Autumn Leaf

Measure before drawing: the leaf’s width should sit at roughly two thirds of its height, never a square shape or it reads as a mitten instead of a leaf. Mark that height and width lightly in pencil first if a child needs a guide.

The center vein runs the full height, and every side vein branches off at the same angle, like a fish bone. Let a child draw the outline and center vein with fineliner, then an adult adds three thin burnt orange veins and a mustard wash near the stem. Keep the leaf asymmetrical, real ones never match side to side.

Mason Jar Of Jam

Decide where the window light sits before the first line, upper left is the easiest choice for a right handed child to shade later. That means the jar’s left side stays mostly white paper and the right side gets ink and marker.

Draw the jar outline and lid with fineliner first, flat and simple, then let a child fill most of the jar with burnt orange marker for the jam. An adult leaves one unmarked streak down the right side for shine and adds three mustard dots on the lid for a gingham print. Light only works if one side stays empty, so resist filling the whole jar.

Corn On The Cob

Kernels are not drawn one by one, they are suggested: press the fineliner tip down and lift in short dashes, staggered in offset rows like bricks, and the eye fills in the rest. A child can do the whole cob this way in under a minute.

For the husk, drag the side of a mustard marker in loose parallel strokes rather than coloring it solid, which keeps it looking papery instead of flat. An adult adds a few burnt orange flecks between the kernel rows for variation. Offset rows matter more than neat ones here, perfectly aligned kernels look like a grid, not corn.

Pinecone Doodle

The usual mistake with a pinecone is drawing every scale the same size, which flattens the whole shape. Fix it by making the scales near the top smaller and tighter, and the ones near the middle wider, before the child finishes the outline.

Outline the oval body first, then build scales from the base upward in overlapping rows, each one sitting slightly inside the row below. A child can keep this loose and uneven, since real pinecones never line up. An adult finishes with burnt orange tips on a few top scales and a mustard dot at the base, where it would have snapped from the branch.

Mini Pie Slice

Ten minutes is enough for the basic slice: a triangle crust outline, a mustard marker fill for the filling, and three fineliner lines across the top for a lattice. A child can manage this whole version alone.

Forty minutes adds a fluted edge on the crust, drawn as a row of small bumps rather than a straight line, plus burnt orange shading where filling meets crust and a tiny steam swirl above it. An adult adds that steam line last, since it only works once the slice looks finished. Pair this slice with other kitchen subjects from the food doodles list.

Walnut With A Face

Once the basic walnut shape works, a single curved line down the middle and a bumpy oval around it, change the face each time instead of repeating it. Sleepy eyes one time, a wide smile the next.

A child can draw the shell and pick the expression, while an adult adds the shading: fineliner cross hatching on one side only, plus a mustard marker cheek blush applied in one light circular rub. Try swapping the shell texture too, smooth lines for one walnut and short dashes for the next, so a row of them never looks copied.

Candle In A Jar

Use a 0.5 fineliner instead of a thinner one, since the jar’s straight sides need confident single strokes rather than shaky thin ones. Draw the jar as two parallel vertical lines joined by a flat base and a slightly narrower top.

A child can draw the jar and flame shape alone, a simple teardrop needs no more than three strokes. An adult adds the glow: a mustard marker halo drawn loosely around the flame with the marker held slightly off the paper, so the color stays soft rather than solid. Keep the jar’s glass clear of marker entirely, that empty space is what reads as glass.

Cranberry Sauce Bowl

First mark is the bowl’s rim, a simple oval, not a circle, since it sits at an angle on the table. Second is the base line beneath it, shorter than the rim. Third is the mound of sauce rising just above the rim line.

A child stops there and fills the mound with burnt orange marker in one solid pass. An adult goes back with the fineliner tip to stipple a dozen small dots across the top for whole berries, then adds one mustard fork resting against the rim. Draw the rim before the base every time, it keeps the bowl sitting flat instead of floating.

Pumpkin Pie Whole

Measure the crust band at about one eighth of the total height, any thicker and it looks like a layer cake instead of a pie. Draw the oval top first, then the straight sides, then that thin crust band around the rim.

A child can fill the top with mustard marker in one even layer, no shading needed yet. An adult adds the crimped crust, small repeated bumps around the rim done with quick fineliner flicks, plus a few burnt orange lines radiating from the center to suggest the pie has been sliced. Keep the crust band thin and consistent all the way around, that single measurement sells the shape.

Autumn Squash

Decide the light source before the ribs go in: with light from the upper right, the ribs on the left stay dark lines and the ones on the right get a thin mustard highlight beside them instead of on them.

Outline the squash body and stem with fineliner first, a child can do this with two ovals and a bent stem on top. An adult fills the shadow side with burnt orange marker, pressing lightly, and leaves the lit side mostly white with just the highlight lines. The same shading trick works on any gourd, the autumn sketching ideas page has more shapes to try it on.

Basket Of Apples

The basket’s weave is a texture trick, not a careful drawing job: short diagonal fineliner dashes going one way, then a second layer going the opposite way, crossing over the first. A child can do this freehand, uneven dashes look more like real weave than straight ones.

Apples on top get a quick burnt orange fill each, left mostly unshaded, with one small mustard highlight dot per apple where the light hits. An adult adds a thin fineliner stem and one leaf per apple last, once the weave is finished and dry, so the ink does not smear across it.

Rolling Pin And Dough

The common mistake here is drawing the rolling pin’s handles the same width as the roller itself, which makes the whole tool look like a dumbbell. Narrow the handles on both ends, about half the roller’s width, before adding anything else.

A child can draw the pin shape and the flattened dough circle beneath it with just the fineliner. An adult adds texture: a mustard marker dusting of flour drawn as scattered small dots across the dough, plus a few burnt orange crumbs at the edge where it has torn slightly. Fix the handle width first, every other mistake is easier to forgive than that one.

Gravy Boat

Ten minutes covers the basic shape: an oval body, a small pouring spout on one side, a curved handle on the other, filled with burnt orange marker for the gravy. A child can manage this whole version without help.

Forty minutes adds a saucer underneath, a thin drip line down the spout where gravy has run over, and mustard marker highlights along the handle’s curve to suggest shine on the china. An adult adds the drip last, a single wavy fineliner line, since it only reads correctly once the spout is finished and dry. Skip the saucer entirely for the quick version, it is the first thing to cut.

Chestnut Roasting

Once the basic roasted chestnut shape works, a rounded shell with one cut cross on top, change what the cut looks like each time: a straight X for one, a curved slit for the next, a small star shape for a third.

A child can draw the shell shape and pick the cut, while an adult shades the inside of the cut with burnt orange marker to suggest the pale flesh peeking through the split shell. Add a few mustard marker specks scattered around the shell for roasting marks, varying their placement every time so a row of chestnuts never looks copied across the page.

Harvest Wheat Bundle

Pick a thin 0.1 or 0.2 fineliner for this, since each wheat stalk is really just one confident upward stroke with a few tiny side marks near the top for the grain. A thicker pen turns the whole bundle into a solid clump instead of individual stalks.

A child can draw five or six stalks at slightly different heights and angles, which looks more natural than a perfectly even row. An adult ties them together with a mustard marker ribbon band around the middle and adds a few burnt orange flecks near the grain heads. For more stalks and bundles like this, browse the fall doodles collection next.

Indian Corn Husk

First mark is the cob’s outline, a long oval, slightly wider at the top than the bottom. Second is the pulled back husk leaves framing it on both sides, drawn as simple pointed shapes. Third is a center line down the cob to anchor the kernel rows.

A child can stop after outlining and fill the husk with mustard marker in loose strokes. An adult adds the kernels as small offset dashes in alternating burnt orange and leftover white paper, which reads as speckled corn without coloring every kernel. Draw the husk before the kernels every time, the kernels need that frame to sit inside.

Cozy Mug Of Cider

Keep the mug’s height and width close to equal, a mug drawn taller than it is wide ends up looking like a vase instead. Draw the cup body first, then the handle at roughly the halfway point down the side, never higher.

A child fills the top third with mustard marker for the cider itself, leaving the rest of the mug as an outline. An adult adds a cinnamon stick poking out at an angle, drawn in fineliner, plus a few burnt orange marker swirls of steam rising above it. That halfway handle placement is the one measurement worth checking before anything else goes in.

Napkin Fold Doodle

Treat a folded napkin like three separate flat shapes rather than one soft form: a lit top panel left white, a side panel in light mustard, and a shadowed underside in burnt orange.

A child can draw the simple triangular fold shape with fineliner, three clean lines. An adult fills in that shading afterward, keeping the marker strokes flat rather than blended, since folded cloth reads better as flat planes than smooth gradients. Add one small fineliner acorn or leaf stamped in the corner once the folds are shaded, as a place card touch.

Pilgrim Hat Alone

The hat’s felt texture comes from leaving the fineliner outline loose rather than crisp, a slightly wobbly line reads as soft fabric while a ruler straight one reads as cardboard. Draw the tall crown and wide brim as two simple shapes first.

A child fills the whole hat with a solid black fineliner scribble or leaves it white, either works for a doodle. An adult adds the mustard marker buckle on the front band, a simple rectangle, and a thin burnt orange line along the brim’s underside for depth. Keep the scribble fill loose and directional, all strokes going the same way, instead of a messy crosshatch.

Sleepy Hedgehog

The usual mistake with a hedgehog is drawing the spines pointing straight up like a crown, which flattens the whole body. Fix it by angling every spine slightly backward, following the curve of the back, before filling in any color.

A child draws the simple rounded body and pointed nose first, then adds short straight spine lines once the angle is set. An adult adds a mustard marker wash under the belly and a few burnt orange acorns tucked beside the sleeping hedgehog for a harvest touch. Angle the spines before counting how many to add, the direction matters more than the number.

Pumpkin Spice Latte Cup

Ten minutes gets the basic cup: a simple trapezoid body, a flat lid, and a burnt orange marker fill for the drink showing through a small window shape cut into the cup outline. A child manages this easily.

Forty minutes adds a cardboard sleeve drawn as a wrapped band around the middle, whipped cream swirls on top in loose fineliner loops, and a mustard marker dusting of cinnamon specks over the cream. An adult adds the cinnamon specks last with the marker tip barely touching the paper, since too much pressure turns specks into blotches. Skip the sleeve for the quick version, the cup alone still reads clearly.

Turkey Leg Drumstick

Once the basic drumstick shape works, a rounded end and a narrow bone handle, vary the wrapper each time: plain paper twist for one, a bow for another, nothing at all for a third.

A child draws the drumstick outline and picks the wrapper style, while an adult adds the shading: burnt orange marker over most of the meat, left slightly lighter near the bone end where light would catch it, plus a mustard marker crosshatch pattern for a grilled texture. Changing just the wrapper keeps a whole row of drumsticks from looking identical.

Place Card Leaf Border

Switch to aslightly thicker fineliner, 0.5 or 0.7, for a border that needs to read at a glance across a dinner table, a thin pen disappears from a few feet away. Draw one leaf shape first as a template.

A child repeats that same leaf shape along the card’s edge, rotating it slightly each time so the border looks hand drawn rather than stamped. An adult alternates burnt orange and mustard marker fills between leaves, never the same color twice in a row, and adds a name in fineliner in the center once the border is dry. Keep the border simple enough to repeat quickly, a complex leaf slows the whole card down.

Owl On A Branch

First mark is a simple oval body, second is a rounder head sitting slightly forward of it, third is one horizontal line across the middle of the face to place both eyes at the same level.

A child can stop there and add two round eyes and a small triangle beak. An adult builds the feather texture afterward, short overlapping fineliner curves down the chest, plus a burnt orange marker wash on the wings and a mustard marker chest patch. Place both eyes on that one guideline every time, an owl with uneven eyes looks startled rather than sleepy.

Fox In A Scarf

Keep the fox’s head at roughly a third of its total body length, any bigger and it reads as a puppy instead of a fox. Draw the pointed ears first, since their angle sets the whole head’s tilt.

A child draws the body, head and tail with simple curved fineliner shapes. An adult adds the burnt orange marker fill over most of the body, leaves the chest and tail tip white, and wraps a mustard marker scarf around the neck with two quick loops. Ears drawn too small is the easiest way to lose the fox look entirely, so draw them a little larger than feels right.

Mouse Carrying Pie Slice

Put the light source behind the pie slice rather than behind the mouse, so the slice gets the brightest mustard marker fill while the mouse’s body stays mostly in fineliner outline with just a touch of shading.

A child draws the simple round mouse body, ears, and the triangular pie slice balanced on its paws. An adult adds a thin burnt orange marker line along the slice’s crust edge where it catches the light, plus a soft gray fineliner crosshatch under the mouse’s belly for a grounded shadow. That one bright slice against a plainer mouse carries the whole doodle.

Turkey In Pilgrim Hat

Feathers read as a fan of repeated curved shapes, not individual feathers drawn one by one: draw one curved outline for the whole tail fan first, then divide it into five or six sections with simple lines radiating from the base.

A child can fill alternating sections with burnt orange and mustard marker, which reads as feathers without any fine detail. An adult adds the pilgrim hat on top, a simple black band and buckle in fineliner, and a few thin feather lines inside each colored section for texture. Divide the fan before coloring it, coloring first makes the sections hard to see.

Scarecrow Waving

The common mistake with a waving scarecrow is drawing both arms symmetrical, which looks stiff rather than friendly. Fix it by raising one arm higher than the other and bending the raised elbow slightly, before adding straw or clothing details.

A child draws the simple body, hat, and that one raised waving arm first. An adult adds straw texture poking from the sleeves and collar, short scratchy fineliner lines, plus a mustard marker patched shirt and burnt orange patched trousers. Fix the arm angle before anything else, a symmetrical scarecrow reads as scared rather than friendly, which defeats the whole wave.

Cornucopia Basket

Ten minutes covers the curved horn shape and three or four simple fruits spilling from the opening, each one just a small circle or oval filled with marker. A child manages that version easily.

Forty minutes adds the woven texture along the horn itself, crossing diagonal fineliner dashes like the basket weave trick, plus a wider variety of spilling fruit and leaves in both burnt orange and mustard. An adult adds the woven texture last, once the horn’s outline is fully dry. Keep the opening wide and the tip narrow, that single proportion makes the cornucopia instantly recognizable.

Thanksgiving Table Setting

Once the basic place setting works, a plate, fork, knife and folded napkin, vary what sits on the plate each time: a small drawn turkey one time, just a leaf the next, nothing at all for a third.

A child draws the plate and simple cutlery outlines, then an adult adds the finishing marker touches: a thin mustard rim around the plate edge, a burnt orange napkin fold, and tiny fineliner details like a name card leaning against the glass. Changing just what sits on the plate keeps several settings on one page from looking repeated.

Family Gathered Table

Use the thinnest fineliner in the set, 0.1 or 0.3, since several small figures share one scene and thick lines turn them into blobs rather than people. Draw each figure as a simple oval head and rounded body shape.

A child can place three or four of these simple figures around a long table shape, no faces needed beyond a dot for each eye. An adult fills in small details afterward: a mustard marker tablecloth, burnt orange marker for a turkey centerpiece, and a few fineliner chair backs. Keep every figure at the same simple size, mismatched detail between figures makes a group scene look unfinished.

Harvest Wreath Doodle

First mark is a simple circle guide, drawn lightly, that every leaf and acorn will sit around. Second is a ring of leaf shapes placed evenly around that circle, pointing outward like spokes. Third is a cluster of three acorns tucked along the bottom where a bow would normally hang.

A child can fill the leaves with alternating burnt orange and mustard marker, no shading required. An adult adds a thin fineliner ribbon bow at the bottom, tying the acorn cluster together. Once the wreath works, the same guide circle trick carries into christmas doodles later in the season.

What to Do Next

Start with the acorn or the mini pumpkin if this is the first time a child picks up a fineliner, then work toward the turkey or the scarecrow once the shorter thanksgiving doodles feel easy. Keep a stack of plain white cardstock cut down to place card size nearby, so whatever gets drawn today is ready to set straight on the table.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pens and markers work best for thanksgiving doodles with kids?

A black fineliner between 0.3 and 0.5 handles most outlines, thin enough for detail but sturdy enough for a child’s hand. Pair it with one burnt orange and one mustard marker, both easy to control and quick to clean off skin or table, so thanksgiving doodles stay simple to manage for a mixed age group.

How do you split one doodle between a child and an adult?

Let the child draw the main outline and fill the biggest shape with marker, since that part forgives wobbly lines. An adult adds the smaller finishing touches afterward, shading, a highlight, a second color layer, once the first pass is dry and the shape is already recognizable.

Will the marker bleed through onto a napkin or place card?

Test the marker on a scrap of the same napkin or cardstock first, since thin paper napkins often let marker bleed through to a tablecloth underneath. Slide a spare napkin or sheet of paper under the one being decorated, and these thanksgiving doodles stay contained to one layer.

How long does each doodle actually take?

Most of these finish in ten to twenty minutes once the child’s version and the adult’s extra touch are both done. A few, like the cornucopia or the table setting, run closer to thirty minutes if every small detail gets added.

What paper works best for place cards and napkins?

Plain white cardstock holds marker color better than thin paper and does not buckle the way regular printer paper does. Cut it down to place card size before drawing, rather than drawing on a full sheet and trimming after, so the whole doodle fits inside the final shape.
