A seal doodle is one of the easiest ways to fill a page with character in a few minutes flat. That round body, those big dark eyes and the little flippers give you a shape that is forgiving to draw and endlessly fun to pose, whether it is balancing a ball or sulking on a rock.
Below you will find 27 small seal scenes, ordered from the simplest blob-and-whiskers sketch up to busier two-character moments. Grab a fineliner and a couple of markers and work through them at your own pace, one little seal at a time.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start simple with a seal waving hello, since this is the shape every other idea on this list builds from. Draw one long oval lying on its side for the body, a smaller rounded shape for the head tucked close to one end, and two dot eyes near the top of the head.
Add one flipper raised in a wave and tuck the other flat against the body, then finish with a few short whisker lines and a small curved mouth. Go over the whole thing in fineliner once you are happy with the pencil sketch, then erase any guide lines before adding color.
If the body looks lumpy, round off the outline in one smooth pass rather than fixing it with lots of small strokes, which is where most beginner blobs go wrong. Color the belly with a light peach marker and leave the back plain, or swap in a cool grey marker if peach is not in your kit.
Finish today by keeping the waving flipper short and stubby rather than long and thin, which reads as much friendlier on a small doodle.
Palette: Icy Blue,Peach,Charcoal Black
Move from the waving seal to a fluffy white seal pup, which uses the same oval body but with a fuzzier, rounder outline. Sketch the body as a soft teardrop shape sitting upright, then give the head extra width so the eyes have room to be huge and close together.
Draw the eyes first this time, as two large dark circles with a tiny white highlight left unfilled, since getting the eye size right early keeps the whole pup looking appropriately baby-faced. Work outward from there to the nose, whiskers, and a scalloped outline around the edge of the body to suggest fluffy fur.
If the fur scallops start looking jagged, loosen your wrist and draw them as shallow bumps rather than sharp zigzags. No white gel pen on hand is fine, just leave the body outline plain and let the white paper do the work.
Color only the ice patch beneath the pup in icy blue, keeping the pup itself white so it stands out against the page.
You Will Need
- white gel pen (optional)
Palette: Icy Blue,Soft Grey,Charcoal Black
Keep the pup’s eyes closer together than feels natural at first. Baby animal faces read as cuter when the eyes sit near the center rather than spread wide apart.
Give your seal a little mischief next with one sneaking a fish out of a bucket. Draw the bucket first as a simple trapezoid with a rim ellipse on top, then position the seal’s head and one flipper reaching over the rim toward a fish shape poking out.
Keep the body mostly hidden behind the bucket so you only need to draw the head, neck, and one flipper in full, which makes this quicker than it looks. Add the fish last, as a small curved teardrop with a forked tail and one simple line for a gill.
This idea can go wrong if the bucket looks flat, so give the rim ellipse a visible curve and shade the inside of the bucket a touch darker to suggest depth. No bucket reference handy, just draw a tall plastic cup shape instead and it reads the same way.
Color the fish in icy blue with a peach belly stripe for a quick finishing touch.
Palette: Icy Blue,Peach,Charcoal Black
Carry that playful mood into a seal honking a little bicycle horn, a scene that pairs well with the bucket sneak since both use one small prop to tell the joke. Draw the seal’s body upright and a little puffed out at the chest, then give one flipper a rounded bulb horn with a short curved tube leading to it.
Work from the body outward to the horn so the prop sits naturally against the flipper rather than floating beside it. Open the mouth into a small round “o” shape to show the honk, and add a couple of short motion lines near the horn bulb for sound.
If the horn ends up looking like a random blob, draw the bulb as a slightly squashed circle rather than a perfect round one, since bicycle horns are rarely symmetrical. Swap the horn for a small bell on a stick if you would rather draw something simpler.
Finish with a peach wash on the horn bulb to make it pop against the seal’s grey body.

Here is where proportion starts to matter more, so use this seal curved like a banana as a chance to measure before you commit to ink. Lightly sketch a gentle arc in pencil first, head up at one end and tail up at the other, and check that both ends sit at roughly the same height so the curve reads as balanced rather than lopsided.
Once the arc looks even, build the body around it as a tapered oval that is widest in the middle and narrows toward both the head and the tail flippers. Add the rock underneath as a flat, low shape so the seal’s curve is the clear focus of the page.
This pose goes wrong fastest when one end curls up more than the other, so hold your pencil sketch at arm’s length and compare the two tips before inking. If measuring by eye feels tricky, hold your pen up against the page to check the two heights line up.
Shade the rock in a muted grey marker to keep the seal’s icy blue highlights the brightest thing in the scene.
Palette: Icy Blue,Soft Grey,Charcoal Black
Dress things up a little with a seal in a knit hat, which turns the same basic body shape into something seasonal. Draw the head and body as usual, then fit the hat over the top of the head like a soft dome, leaving a little room at the brim for a ribbed fold line or two.
Add the pom pom last as a slightly uneven circle on top, since a perfectly round pom pom looks stiff compared to one with a few small bumps around its edge. Keep the face relaxed with a simple closed-eye smile so the hat feels cozy rather than silly.
If the hat looks like it is floating above the head, bring the brim line down so it overlaps the top of the eyes slightly, the way a real hat would sit. No peach marker on hand, any warm pink or coral works just as well for the pom pom.
Color the hat in a soft icy blue to tie it back into the rest of your seal doodles.
Palette: Icy Blue,Peach,Charcoal Black
Bring in perspective now with a seal holding a snowball, winding up to throw it. Decide first whether you are looking at the seal from the side or almost head on, since a side view lets you show the throwing arm flipper pulled back clearly while a front view hides it behind the body.
A side view is easier to pull off at this level, so draw the body in profile with the near flipper raised back and the snowball held just above it. Keep the snowball as a simple circle with a few short dash marks for texture rather than trying to draw individual snow chunks.
If the raised flipper looks stiff, bend it slightly at the midpoint instead of drawing it as one straight line, which gives the throw more energy. Swap the snowball for a small beach ball if you want a sunnier version of the same pose.
Leave the snowball white and ring it with a thin icy blue outline so it still reads clearly against the page.
Palette: Icy Blue,Soft Grey,Charcoal Black
Shift gears into pure relaxation with a chubby seal sunbathing belly up on a rock. Draw the rock first as a flat, wide shape, then lay the seal across it on its back with the belly forming the biggest, roundest curve on the page.
Keep the flippers small and floppy at the sides rather than tucked in, since loose flippers sell the idea of total relaxation better than neat ones. Add closed, slightly upturned eyes and a small open mouth for a sleepy, satisfied expression.
The belly can look flat and boring if you draw it as one plain curve, so add two or three short shading lines where the body meets the rock to suggest where the weight presses down. If this is your first time drawing a seal from this angle, practice the belly curve a few times on scrap paper before committing to ink.
Warm the whole belly with a peach marker to suggest sun on pale fur, and you have a scene any reader of animal doodle painting ideas will recognize as a favorite pose.
Palette: Peach,Soft Grey,Charcoal Black
Keep the energy up with a seal clapping its flippers, a pose that works well right after the sunbathing seal since both rely on exaggerated body language rather than detail. Draw the body sitting upright and slightly leaned back, then bring both flippers together in front of the chest at the same height so the clap reads clearly.
Open the mouth wide and round, and angle the eyes into happy upward arcs instead of circles, since this changes the whole expression from neutral to joyful without adding a single extra line. Add two or three short motion marks between the flippers to show the clap in action.
If the flippers look uneven, draw them as mirror images by sketching one first and tracing its rough shape for the other side. A smaller, quicker version of this works fine too: skip the motion marks and the pose still reads as happy from the raised flippers and open mouth alone.
Save the full version, motion marks and all, for when you have a few extra minutes to spare.
Palette: Peach,Icy Blue,Charcoal Black
Give the clapping seal a reason to celebrate with a baby seal holding a fish like a prize, clutched proudly in both flippers. Draw the pup’s body small and round, then wrap both flippers around the fish at chest height so it looks held rather than just resting nearby.
Draw the fish second, keeping it in proportion to the pup by making it roughly the length of the pup’s own head, since a fish any bigger starts to look unmanageable for such small flippers. Give the pup wide, proud eyes and a small open-mouth grin to sell the triumph.
This idea can look odd if the fish floats in front of the flippers instead of being held by them, so overlap the flipper lines slightly over the fish’s body to anchor it in place. No fish reference needed, a simple curved teardrop with a tail fork reads clearly enough.
Color the fish in icy blue with one peach stripe down its side for a quick pop of contrast.
Palette: Icy Blue,Peach,Charcoal Black
For a funnier variation on the rock pose, try a seal posing like a mermaid, propped up on its flippers with its tail flippers crossed elegantly behind it. Draw the upper body leaning back on both front flippers for support, chest lifted and chin tilted slightly up in a dramatic pose.
Cross the hind flippers behind the body rather than leaving them flat, since this one adjustment is what sells the mermaid joke. Add a small flourish, like one flipper touching the chin or resting on the hip area, to push the glamour further.
If the pose looks stiff, loosen the spine curve so the chest pushes forward and the lower body curves slightly away, the way a real reclining pose works. Swap the rock for a simple beach towel shape if you want a sillier, more casual version.
Finish with a peach blush mark on each cheek for a bit of extra charm.
Palette: Peach,Icy Blue,Charcoal Black
Add some sound to the page with a seal mid-bark, whiskers puffed out and head thrown slightly back. Start with the head tilted up and the mouth drawn as a wide open oval rather than a small curve, since the size of that mouth is what carries the whole bark.
Draw the whiskers next as short straight lines radiating outward from the puffed cheeks, spacing them unevenly so they look alive rather than like a ruler drew them. Keep the body simple and mostly still underneath, since all the action happens in the head.
If the bark looks more like a yawn, narrow the mouth slightly at the corners and add two small teeth marks near the top for bite. For a quieter version, close the mouth partway and tuck the whiskers flat for a seal that is simply curious rather than loud.
Today, try the full open-mouth bark first since it is more fun to draw and teaches you the puffed-cheek shape you will reuse elsewhere.

Slow the pace again with a seal sleeping upright in the water, nose pointed toward the sky and body floating straight up and down. Draw a simple vertical oval for the body with just the head and nose breaking the surface, then add a wavy line across the middle for the waterline.
Keep the eyes closed with two short curved lines and let the whiskers droop slightly downward, since relaxed whiskers read as sleepy far better than straight stiff ones. Shade the submerged part of the body a touch darker or cooler than the part above the waterline to suggest it is underwater.
If the floating pose looks tipped over, double check the body sits on a perfectly vertical line before you ink it, since even a slight lean breaks the illusion of floating upright. No blue marker handy, a light pencil shading works for the underwater half instead.
Use a thin wavy icy blue line for the water’s surface to frame the whole scene.
Palette: Icy Blue,Soft Grey,Charcoal Black
Here is a quick joke drawing that works well as a palate cleanser: a seal holding a fish under its nose like a mustache. Draw the head first with the nose and mouth in their usual place, then position a small curved fish sideways just beneath the nose so its shape mimics a handlebar mustache.
Hold the fish in place with one flipper raised to the side of the face, as if pressing it there on purpose. Keep the seal’s eyes wide and proud, since the joke lands best when the expression looks completely serious about the silly mustache.
If the fish mustache looks awkwardly placed, nudge it slightly lower so it sits right above the mouth line rather than floating near the eyes. This one also works in a stripped-down ten-minute version with no flipper holding the fish at all, just balanced in place, while a slower version adds the flipper and a bit of shading on the fish scales for more texture.
Either way, keep the expression deadpan for the best laugh.
Palette: Icy Blue,Charcoal Black,Peach
Turn up the silliness with a seal juggling two beach balls, caught mid-air with a proud grin. Draw the body balanced on its hind flippers first, then add one beach ball balanced on the nose and a second one tossed up above the head so the eye travels naturally from bottom to top.
Keep both balls the same size so the juggling act looks plausible, and give each one two or three curved stripe lines to suggest a beach ball pattern without overworking the detail. A wide, closed-eye grin sells the proud performer feeling better than an open mouth here.
If the balance looks off, draw a light vertical guide line through the center of the body first and check that both balls sit roughly along it, just offset in height. Swap one beach ball for a striped ball if you want to echo the ball-balancing seal elsewhere on this list.
Color the two balls in alternating icy blue and peach stripes for a cheerful finish.
Palette: Icy Blue,Peach,Charcoal Black
Keep the comedy going with a seal too chubby to fit through a hole in the ice, stuck halfway with a surprised look on its face. Draw the ice hole first as a simple rounded opening, then fit the seal’s head and front half through it while the wider back half stays stuck above the surface.
Push the body out noticeably wider than the hole itself, since the size mismatch is the entire joke and needs to read instantly. Give the face a wide-eyed, slightly flustered expression rather than a calm one to match the predicament.
If the stuck pose looks unclear, add a couple of short strain lines around the widest part of the body where it presses against the ice edge. No icy blue marker on hand, plain grey shading on the ice still reads clearly as cold.
Finish with rounded, bulging cheeks on the visible half of the face for extra comic effect.
Palette: Icy Blue,Soft Grey,Charcoal Black
Soften things up with a seal pup asking for a hug, both flippers spread wide open and eyes big with hope. Draw the pup’s body upright and a little tilted forward, then open both flippers outward at shoulder height rather than at the sides, since an open stance is what reads as a hug request.
Give the face slightly raised eyebrows and a small open mouth, which together push the expression toward hopeful rather than simply happy. Keep the body round and soft with no sharp edges anywhere, since softness is the whole point of this pose.
If the flippers look too stiff reaching outward, curve them very slightly inward at the tips, as if already starting to wrap around something. For a quick version, skip the raised eyebrows and let the open flippers alone carry the message, which still works fine in a hurry.
Warm the cheeks with a touch of peach for extra sweetness.
Palette: Peach,Icy Blue,Charcoal Black
Pair this with the earlier snowball throw for a winter set: a seal pushing a big snowball with its nose, body braced low against the effort. Draw the snowball first, larger than the seal’s own head, then position the seal behind it with its nose pressed flat against the ball’s surface.
Angle the body low and slightly crouched, back flippers trailing behind, to suggest forward motion and strain rather than a casual stroll. Add a short curved line trailing behind the snowball to show the path it has rolled along.
If the pushing pose looks static, lower the front of the body closer to the ground and raise the back slightly, the same angle a person uses when pushing something heavy. No icy blue marker handy, leave the snowball white with a thin grey outline and it still reads clearly as snow.
Today, try sketching the trail line last so you can judge how long it should be once the rest of the scene is in place.
Palette: Soft Grey,Icy Blue,Charcoal Black
Cool off with a seal licking a popsicle, eyes closed in pure enjoyment. Draw the popsicle first as a simple rectangle with rounded top corners and a short stick at the base, then position the seal’s tongue just touching the lower edge of it.
Tilt the head slightly to one side as it licks, since a perfectly straight-on head looks less natural than one angled toward the treat. Keep the eyes closed with soft curved lines and let one flipper hold the popsicle stick steady.
If the tongue looks odd, keep it small and simple, just a short curved triangle peeking out rather than a long detailed shape. Swap the popsicle for a simple ice cube if you want an even quicker version with less color work.
Color the popsicle in icy blue with one peach stripe down the middle to match the rest of your palette.
Palette: Icy Blue,Peach,Charcoal Black
Bring the energy back down with a sleepy seal resting its chin on a beach ball, using it almost like a pillow. Draw the beach ball first as a simple circle with a few curved stripe lines, then rest the seal’s chin directly on top of it with the body curled comfortably behind.
Close the eyes and let the mouth relax into a small flat line rather than a smile, since true sleepiness looks calmer than a grin. Keep the flippers loosely draped around the sides of the ball rather than gripping it.
If the pose looks uncomfortable, check that the chin sits in a natural dip rather than balanced awkwardly on the very top curve of the ball. No striped beach ball reference handy, a plain round ball with two shading curves reads the same way.
Shade gently under the chin where it meets the ball to ground the pose convincingly.
Palette: Icy Blue,Peach,Charcoal Black
Add a second character for the first time with a seal blushing after a compliment from a seagull. Draw the seal’s body first, head tilted shyly to one side with a small flustered smile, then add the seagull perched nearby on a rock or in mid-hover, beak open as if mid-sentence.
Place the seagull slightly smaller than the seal and positioned a little above its eye line, since looking slightly up at the seal from a perch makes the compliment feel more natural. Draw two small peach blush marks on the seal’s cheeks to make the embarrassment obvious without needing a speech bubble.
If two characters feels crowded on the page, draw the seagull as a simple side-view shape with a pointed beak and two short wing lines rather than full detail. This pairs well with the ideas in the butterfly doodle collection if you enjoy small two-character scenes.
Keep the seagull’s pose simple so the blushing seal stays the clear focus of the page.
Palette: Peach,Icy Blue,Charcoal Black
Pick up the pace with a seal surfing a wave on its belly, stretched long and streamlined across a curling crest. Draw the wave first as one large curved shape with a smaller curl at the top, then lay the seal’s body along the lower slope of it, flippers tucked back for speed.
Angle the head slightly upward and forward, as if looking ahead at the water, and keep the whole body stretched longer and flatter than usual since a surfing pose reads better lean than round. Add a few short white gaps or light lines inside the wave shape to suggest foam and movement.
If the wave looks flat, make sure the curl at the top leans forward over the body slightly rather than standing perfectly straight up, which gives it a sense of motion. No icy blue marker on hand, pencil shading along the wave’s curve still suggests water convincingly.
Finish with a thin white highlight line along the top edge of the wave for extra shine.
You Will Need
- white gel pen (optional)
Palette: Icy Blue,Soft Grey,Charcoal Black
Match the surfing seal’s energy with a seal doing a giant belly flop splash, caught mid-air just before impact. Draw the body in a wide, flat arch shape with all four flippers spread outward, since a stiff spread-eagle pose is what makes a belly flop read clearly rather than a graceful dive.
Add the splash beneath as a cluster of jagged, uneven peaks rather than one smooth wave shape, since real splashes break apart unevenly. Keep the seal’s expression a little startled or delighted, with wide open eyes and an open mouth, to add humor to the moment.
If the splash looks too neat, vary the height of each peak so some are tall and sharp while others are short and rounded. Swap a full splash for just a few scattered droplet marks if you want a calmer, quicker version of the same joke.
Keep the icy blue color light and scattered across the splash so it still looks like spray rather than a solid shape.
Palette: Icy Blue,Soft Grey,Charcoal Black
Return to a quieter moment with a seal peeking out of a round hole in the ice, only the head and shoulders visible above the surface. Draw the ice hole first as a clean circle, then fit just the head and the very top of the shoulders inside it, leaving the rest of the body implied below the ice line.
Keep the expression curious, with wide eyes looking slightly off to one side as if something caught its attention nearby. Shade the inside edge of the hole a touch darker than the surrounding ice to suggest depth and the water below.
If the head looks too small for the hole, measure it against the hole’s width first and aim for the head to fill about two thirds of that space, which keeps the peek looking snug rather than lost in a huge gap. No grey marker on hand, light pencil hatching inside the hole does the same job.
Finish with a thin icy blue rim around the top edge of the ice for a clean, cold-looking border.
Palette: Icy Blue,Soft Grey,Charcoal Black
Build on the earlier two-character scene with a seal and a seagull arguing over one fish, each gripping one end of it. Draw the fish first, held horizontally between them, with the seal’s flipper on one end and the seagull’s beak clamped on the other.
Give both characters an annoyed expression, drawn with slightly furrowed brow lines and narrowed eyes, since matching expressions on both sides sell the tug-of-war better than one calm character and one angry one. Keep the fish bent very slightly in the middle to show the strain of being pulled from both directions.
If the composition feels cramped, spread the seal and seagull a little further apart and let the fish stretch to fill the gap between them rather than squeezing everyone close together. A reader who enjoyed the earlier blushing seagull scene can treat this as its grumpier sequel.
Color the fish in icy blue and leave both characters uncolored so the fish stays the visual center of the joke.
Palette: Icy Blue,Soft Grey,Charcoal Black
For one of the more technical poses on this list, try a seal balancing a striped ball on its nose, which depends entirely on getting the balance point right. Draw the head tilted back first, nose pointed straight up, then lightly mark a single dot directly above the tip of the nose before you even sketch the ball, since that dot becomes the exact center the ball needs to sit on.
Draw the ball as a circle centered on that dot, then add three or four curved stripe lines running around its surface to suggest roundness. Keep the body beneath balanced and still, with both front flippers held slightly out to the sides for stability.
If the ball looks like it is about to roll off, double check its center lines up directly above the nose tip rather than drifting to one side, which is the single most common mistake with this pose. Swap the striped ball for a plain colored ball if stripes feel fiddly at this stage.
Color the stripes in alternating icy blue and peach for a cheerful circus-style finish.
Palette: Icy Blue,Peach,Charcoal Black
Close out this list the way you started it, with something simple: a seal lying on a rock, too lazy to roll over. Draw the body stretched out flat along the rock’s surface, one flipper draped limply over the edge and the head resting heavily to one side rather than lifted.
Keep every line loose and a little droopy, since tension anywhere in the pose, a lifted head or a tucked flipper, works against the feeling of total laziness you are going for here. Give the eyes a half-closed, heavy-lidded look rather than fully shut, as if too tired even to finish falling asleep.
If the pose looks too stiff, check that the body follows the rock’s shape closely rather than sitting rigidly on top of it, almost melting into the surface. For next time, try this same lazy pose from a front-on angle instead of the side for a different feel entirely.
Finish with soft grey shading beneath the body where it meets the rock to really sink it into place.
Palette: Soft Grey,Icy Blue,Charcoal Black
What to Do Next
Pick one seal from this list, whichever pose made you smile first, and start with a loose pencil sketch before you commit to fineliner. A plain sketchbook page is all you need, and once the shapes feel comfortable the rest of these ideas will go even faster.
Frequently Asked Questions
What pens work best for a seal doodle?
A fine black fineliner between 0.3 and 0.5mm gives clean outlines without smudging. Add two alcohol markers, one icy blue and one peach, for quick accents that keep each sketch feeling finished without much extra time.
How do I make seal doodles look less flat and round?
Vary the body shape slightly for each pose instead of reusing one perfect oval. Stretch it long for surfing or swimming poses, and keep it short and round for sleepy or sunbathing scenes to add visual variety.
What is the easiest seal pose for a beginner to start with?
A simple side-view seal waving hello is the easiest starting point. It uses one body oval, one head shape, and two flippers, which makes it a good warm-up before trying poses with props or a second character.
How can I add color without it looking messy?
Keep color to small areas like a belly, a prop, or a cheek blush rather than filling the whole seal. Light, loose marker strokes that leave a little white space read cleaner than one solid block of color.
Can these seal doodles work in a journal or planner spread?
Yes, most of these poses are small enough to tuck into a journal margin or a planner corner. Pick the simpler early ideas on this list for tight spaces and save the two-character scenes for a full page.
