32 Plant Illustration Ideas of Winter Windowsills, Forced Bulbs and Indoor Citrus Trees

26

Plant illustration is at its best in January and February, when every windowsill becomes a small greenhouse and a jar of rooting bulbs feels like proof that spring is still coming. You do not need a garden for this, just a mug of tea, a sunny sill and a willingness to let the watercolor run a little loose at the edges.

Below are 32 scenes built around that winter-windowsill mood: forced hyacinths, paperwhites in pebbles, a cat asleep under a monstera, a woman repotting a plant on a snowy afternoon. Each one is sized for a single sitting, with the order to paint in, the spot where it usually goes wrong, and a swap if your shelf is missing something.

Hyacinth bulbs rooting in jars are the first forced-bulb picture most people reach for, and they are a kind way to start because the glass does half the work for you. Pencil in two or three jars of different heights, then draw the bulb sitting just above the rim with roots trailing down into the water.

Paint the water first with a pale grey-blue wash left loose at the edges, then drop in a terracotta-cream wash for the bulb and let it dry before adding the roots in thin ink lines. Measure the bulb against the jar height before you commit to pencil: beginners tend to draw it too large, so hold your brush up against the reference and compare the two widths directly.

The frosty sill behind the jars can stay a thin wash of cream with a few dry-brush streaks for frost, nothing fussy. If your glass jars look muddy, lift paint out of the water area with a damp clean brush while it is still just damp, not wet.

Swap fresh hyacinths for any bulb photo if none are in season near you: the jar and root technique works the same for tulip or crocus bulbs.

Once the hyacinth jars feel comfortable, paperwhites beside a stack of books and a teacup move you into a fuller little still life. Block in the pot, the book spines and the teacup in pencil first, keeping the paperwhite stems taller than everything else so the eye goes there first.

Paint the white flowers by leaving the paper bare and only washing a pale cream shadow into the petal folds, then work the sage green stems and leaves wet into wet so they stay soft. The books can take flat washes of terracotta and moss green, varied in value so they read as separate volumes rather than one brown block.

This composition goes wrong when every object sits at the same size and distance, so overlap the teacup slightly in front of the books to pull it forward. If your flowers are your first white florals, it helps to paint the shadow shapes first and trust the white paper to do the rest.

No real paperwhites on hand: a narcissus or daffodil photo gives you the same stem and petal shape.

Move from cut flowers to a potted tree with a little lemon tree in a terracotta pot by a snowy window. Start with the terracotta pot low in the frame, then build the trunk and branches upward before adding leaf clusters so the tree has a believable structure under all that green.

Paint the leaves in two greens, a lighter sage for the clusters catching window light and a deeper moss for the shaded underside, dropping both into the same damp leaf shape so they blend at the edges. Add the lemons last in a warm yellow with a tiny terracotta shadow underneath each one, since painting fruit before leaves tends to make it float.

Eye level matters here: sit the horizon of the windowsill low in the frame so you are looking slightly up into the tree, which makes a small potted tree feel taller than it is. Snow on the glass outside stays a flat cream wash with a few soft grey streaks, nothing crisp.

No terracotta pot nearby: any plain ceramic pot photo gives you the same rounded shape to work from.

A sleeping cat under a monstera plant brings in the first bit of life, and cats are forgiving to paint asleep since you do not need to fix a pose that might move. Draw the monstera’s split leaves first, large and overlapping, then curl the cat into the shade pool beneath them.

Paint the leaves in moss green with a slightly darker green dropped into the split sections while still damp, which gives each leaf real depth without extra brushwork. The cat can go down as one warm grey-brown shape with a few ink lines for the ear, paw tuck and tail, since a sleeping cat reads fine as a loose silhouette.

The usual trouble spot is the monstera leaves looking flat and paper-thin: dry-brush a few short strokes along the leaf edges once everything is dry to suggest the ribbed texture without drawing every vein. If your cat reference is sitting up rather than curled, any sleeping-cat photo from a pet account will give you the same tucked shape.

Keep the sunny corner behind them simple, just a warm cream wash so the green and the cat stay the stars of the page.

Palette: Moss Green,Sap Green,Burnt Sienna,Cream

A tabby or ginger cat reads more clearly at this loose scale than a grey or white one, since the stripes or warm fur give you natural places to drop in ink detail.

A row of herb pots on a steamy kitchen windowsill is a good lesson in painting several small plants without them all looking the same. Space three or four pots across the page at slightly different heights, maybe basil, thyme and a trailing rosemary, so the silhouette line along the top varies.

Paint each plant’s green a shade apart, basil brighter and more yellow-green, rosemary greyer and cooler, so your eye can tell them apart even before the ink detail goes in. Steam on the glass behind them can be suggested with a very pale grey wash left soft at the top edge, lifted slightly with a dry brush while still damp.

This scene goes wrong fastest when every pot sits in an identical straight row: stagger them forward and back a little, and let one lean slightly against another. If fresh herbs are not available for reference, a grocery store herb photo or a windowsill photo online works just as well.

Keep the terracotta pots a shared warm tone so the row reads as one steady family of plants.

Bring a person into the scene with a girl watering a pothos trailing down a bookshelf. Sketch the bookshelf and the long trailing pothos vines first, since they set the vertical rhythm of the whole picture, then place the girl at the side with a small watering can tipped toward the pot.

Keep her figure simple, a loose silhouette in a soft sweater colour with just enough ink line for the arm and the can, and let the plant carry the detail instead. Paint the pothos leaves in two greens with the lighter one near any light source so the trailing vine reads as falling forward rather than flat against the shelf.

Hands and watering cans are a common sticking point: simplify the can to a basic rounded shape with a thin spout line rather than trying to draw every seam, and it will still read clearly at this scale. If figures are new to you, a quick ten-minute version with just her shoulders and head visible behind the shelf works just as well as painting her full length.

For a longer session, add a second shorter pothos trail on the opposite side to balance the shelf.

Crocus bulbs blooming in a teacup on a breakfast table scales everything down to something you can finish quickly. Draw the teacup first, slightly off centre, then the thin crocus leaves and the cup-shaped petals rising just above the rim.

Paint the petals in a soft blush or pale purple wash left light at the tips, then add a tiny spot of yellow ochre at the base of each flower for the stamens once the petal wash is dry. The teacup pattern, if you want one, should go on last with a fine brush or pen so it never competes with the flowers for attention.

Crocus leaves are thin and easy to overwork: paint them in one confident stroke per blade rather than building them up, since a crocus leaf that gets fussed over stops looking like a crocus leaf. No real crocus bulbs blooming yet, any spring bulb catalogue photo gives you the same cup shape to copy.

A faint breakfast setting behind the cup, a folded napkin or the edge of a plate, keeps the scene grounded without adding much painting time.

A kumquat tree in a sunroom with snow on the glass roof lets you play with light coming from above rather than from a side window, which changes where every shadow falls. Build the tree trunk and leaf canopy first, then decide the light is coming down through the glass roof so shadows under each leaf and fruit cluster point downward and slightly inward.

Paint the kumquats in small orange-gold dots with a tiny shadow crescent under each one, grouped in twos and threes rather than scattered evenly across the tree. The snow-dusted glass roof panels above can be suggested with a few straight pencil-ruled lines and a pale grey wash, kept loose so it does not turn into a technical drawing.

Overhead light tends to flatten a tree if every leaf gets the same shadow treatment: vary the shadow strength so leaves deeper inside the canopy sit darker than the ones catching direct light at the top. If a sunroom setting feels like too much, drop the glass roof and simply show the tree against a plain cream wall.

Finish with a single ink outline pass on the trunk and a few branch lines to hold the loose washes together.

A pilea plant beside a window full of falling snow is mostly about contrast: round coin-shaped leaves against a soft white sky. Draw the pilea’s leaves as simple circles and ovals on thin stems radiating out from a central point, since that round leaf shape is what makes a pilea recognisable at a glance.

Paint the leaves in a fresh sap green, leaving tiny highlight gaps unpainted near the leaf centres where light catches the slightly domed surface. The window and falling snow behind it stay a pale grey-blue wash with white paper left bare in small irregular dots for the snowflakes, flicked in with the tip of a dry brush or a white gel pen once the wash is dry.

Round leaves on thin stems collapse into a blob if you paint them too close together: leave visible white paper gaps between leaf clusters so each coin leaf keeps its own shape. If a white gel pen is not in your kit, a thin wash of masking fluid flicked on before painting the sky gives you the same bare snowflake dots.

You Will Need

• white gel pen or masking fluid for snow dots

A cozy reading chair surrounded by potted ferns pulls back to a wider scene, so plan the composition before you touch paint: chair slightly off centre, ferns arranged around it at varying heights so none of them block the seat. Pencil the chair’s basic shape first since it anchors everything else in scale.

Paint the ferns in loose feathery strokes of sap and moss green, working from the centre stem outward with a nearly dry brush so each frond keeps a slightly broken, textured edge rather than a solid green shape. The chair itself can take a flat wash in a warm neutral or soft blush, with ink lines added once dry for the frame and any visible wood.

Ferns turn into green smudges fast if you overwork them: lay each frond down once and leave it, resisting the urge to go back over wet paint. For a quick ten-minute version, paint just two or three ferns close to the chair, then build outward to a fuller ring of plants if you have more time.

A folded blanket or a book left open on the seat adds a lived-in detail without much extra effort.

Palette: Sap Green,Moss Green,Soft Blush,Cream

A string of pearls plant hanging above a radiator gives you a chance to paint a very different leaf shape after all those ferns and leaves, tiny round beads trailing down thin strings. Draw the hanging pot first, then let the strings fall in loose curving lines rather than straight drops, since real trailing succulents rarely hang perfectly vertical.

Paint the bead-leaves as small circles in a cool sage green, leaving a tiny highlight dot unpainted on each bead where it catches light, and vary the spacing along each string so it does not read as a row of beads on a necklace. The radiator below can stay a simple cream or pale grey rectangle with a few ribbed lines, just enough to place the plant in a warm indoor spot.

Painting every bead the same size is the easiest way to flatten this plant: let the ones near the pot sit slightly larger and the trailing tips get smaller and sparser. No string of pearls plant nearby, any trailing succulent photo gives you a similar bead-on-a-string shape to study.

Palette: Sap Green,Terracotta,Cream,Payne’s Grey

After a plant with tiny leaves, a fiddle leaf fig beside a sofa with a knit throw is a good study in the opposite extreme: a handful of large leaves that each need to hold their own shape. Draw the trunk first, then place five or six large leaf shapes at different angles so some show their front and some their edge.

Paint each leaf in two tones of green dropped wet into wet, letting them blend only slightly so the leaf keeps a sense of its central vein without you drawing it in first. The knit throw on the sofa can take a loose textured wash in terracotta or cream, with a few short dry-brush strokes across it once dry to suggest the ribbed knit pattern.

Large leaves show every hard edge mistake, so if one dries with a harsh backrun, soften it immediately with a clean damp brush rather than waiting. If your fiddle leaf fig reference only shows the top half of the plant, that is plenty, a cropped view of just the upper leaves reads just as well as the full pot.

Add the ink vein lines last, one per leaf, kept light so they guide the eye without looking drawn-on.

A moss terrarium jar on a winter writing desk is a quiet little subject that rewards patience with greens rather than big gestures. Draw the glass jar as a simple rounded or cylindrical outline, then sketch loose mounds of moss and a tiny fern or two inside it before any paint touches the page.

Paint the moss in overlapping dots and short dabs of moss and sap green rather than one flat wash, since real moss has that bumpy, clustered texture you can only suggest by varying the brush marks. Leave the glass jar itself mostly white paper, adding only a thin curved line of pale grey along one side to suggest the glass catching light, which is what sells the terrarium as glass rather than an open bowl.

Overworking the jar’s reflections is the most common slip here: one or two curved highlight lines read as glass, five or six start to look like cracks. A pen and a fountain pen nib beside the jar, if you want them, can be added last in simple ink strokes once the moss is dry.

Palette: Moss Green,Sap Green,Payne’s Grey,Cream

Grape hyacinths in a moss-filled basket on a dining table bring back the forced-bulb mood with a slightly fuller arrangement than the earlier jars. Draw the basket’s woven texture loosely with short curved pencil marks, then add the grape hyacinth spikes rising at slightly different heights above the moss.

Paint each flower spike as a tight cluster of tiny blue-purple dots rather than individual bells, since at this scale a grape hyacinth reads entirely through colour and cluster shape, not through drawn detail. The moss filling the basket takes the same dot-and-dab technique as a terrarium, in moss green with the basket’s woven rim left in a warm terracotta or cream wash.

Too many evenly spaced flower spikes looks planted in rows rather than gathered in a basket, so cluster a few spikes close together and let one or two lean outward. If grape hyacinths are out of season where you are, any small spiked blue flower photo, like a muscari bulb catalogue image, gives you the same cluster shape.

A single ink line around the basket’s rim at the end holds the loose moss dots together into a clear container shape.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Moss Green,Terracotta,Soft Blush

A calamondin tree with tiny fruit in a bright bay window gives you another citrus tree to paint, but the bay window’s angled glass panes change how you frame it compared to the lemon tree earlier. Pencil the bay window’s three angled panes first as simple trapezoid shapes, then place the potted tree centred in front of the middle pane so it reads clearly against the brightest light.

Paint the small round calamondin fruits in clusters of orange-gold with a touch of terracotta shadow underneath each cluster, keeping them smaller and more numerous than the kumquats from earlier so the two trees in this list stay visually distinct. The angled window panes behind the tree can take the palest wash of cream or blush, almost white, to suggest the brightness of a bay window without competing with the green canopy.

Perspective trips people up here: keep the vanishing lines of the angled panes converging gently rather than drawing each pane as a flat rectangle, or the window will look like it is floating rather than built into a wall. Finish the pot in terracotta last, grounding the whole tree.

Palette: Moss Green,Yellow Ochre,Terracotta,Cream

An orchid on a bathroom shelf beside a steamy mirror moves the plant out of the usual windowsill setting and into warm, humid light, which changes the mood of the whole wash. Draw the orchid’s arching stem and open flowers first, keeping the petal shapes rounded and slightly irregular rather than perfectly symmetrical, since real orchid blooms rarely match each other exactly.

Paint the petals in a soft blush wash left pale at the centre, then drop a deeper blush or terracotta into the throat of each flower while the petal is still damp so the colour blooms naturally outward. The steamy mirror behind can be laid in as one soft grey-cream wash with the edges kept deliberately blurry, almost out of focus, to suggest condensation without drawing a single mirror line.

Orchid flowers look stiff if every petal is painted at full saturation: let at least one flower sit paler or half turned away, which also saves you painting every petal in full detail. If a mirror feels like too much, a plain pale wall behind the orchid works just as well and paints faster.

Palette: Soft Blush,Terracotta,Sap Green,Payne’s Grey

Plant cuttings rooting in glass bottles on a frosty sill lets you revisit the jar-and-water technique from the hyacinth idea, but with leafy stems instead of bulbs. Line up three or four small bottles of different shapes along the sill, then draw a single leafy cutting rising out of each one, varying the leaf shapes slightly so the bottles do not read as copies of each other.

Paint the water in each bottle with the palest grey-blue wash, left almost dry in places so the glass still reads as clear rather than full, then paint the leaves above the waterline in sap green while the roots below get a few thin wavy ink lines once everything is dry. A pothos, a philodendron and a tradescantia cutting side by side give you three leaf shapes to contrast without needing three separate plant pots.

Bottles crowd together fast if drawn too close: leave clear white paper gaps between each one so the frosty sill shows through and the row does not collapse into one shape. No real cuttings on hand, a plant propagation photo from any houseplant account gives you the same root and stem detail.

Palette: Sap Green,Payne’s Grey,Moss Green,Cream

A cyclamen in a pot on a snowy balcony table puts a flowering plant outdoors against real winter weather, which is a nice contrast after so many indoor windowsills. Draw the cyclamen’s heart-shaped leaves close to the pot first, then let the flower stems rise up and the petals fold backward, which is the detail that makes a cyclamen bloom instantly recognisable.

Paint the petals in a strong blush or deep pink, applied in one confident stroke per petal so the folded-back shape stays crisp rather than fussy, and save the leaves for a mottled sap and moss green wash dropped wet into wet for their marbled pattern. The snowy balcony table under the pot can take a pale cream wash with the white paper left bare for drifted snow, and a thin grey line for the table’s edge against the cold outdoor light.

Painting cyclamen petals too softly loses their signature folded shape, so work decisively and let the brush do one clean stroke rather than going back over it. A railing or a hint of a city view behind the table, kept very loose, places the balcony without much extra work.

Palette: Soft Blush,Moss Green,Sap Green,Payne’s Grey

A tray of seedlings under a grow light in late February is a small change of pace: rows of tiny green sprouts rather than one mature plant. Draw the tray as a simple grid of small cells, then dot in the seedlings as pairs of tiny rounded leaves just breaking the soil surface, keeping them a touch irregular in height since real seedlings never germinate perfectly evenly.

Paint the soil in the cells first with a flat terracotta-brown wash, then add the seedling leaves in bright fresh sap green once the soil is dry so the green stays crisp against the darker base. The grow light above can be suggested with a soft purple-pink glow wash along the top edge of the page, since many grow lights cast that particular colour, giving the whole scene a gentle lavender cast without needing to draw a light fixture in detail.

Painting every seedling identically is the fastest way to make this look like a diagram rather than a picture: vary a few leaf angles and let one or two cells sit still bare, just soil, as if those seeds have not sprouted yet.

Palette: Sap Green,Terracotta,Soft Blush,Payne’s Grey

A woman repotting a plant at the kitchen table on a snowy day brings a full little scene together: a person, a task, and the window beyond showing why she is doing it indoors today. Sketch the table and the two pots first, the old one and the new terracotta one, then place her hands and shoulders at the centre with the plant’s roots visible between them.

Keep her figure loose and largely gestural, a soft sweater colour wash and a few ink lines for hands and hair, since the detail work belongs to the plant’s root ball and loose soil rather than to her face. Paint the exposed roots in thin, slightly tangled ink lines over a pale wash, and let loose soil crumbs scatter across the table in small dry-brush dabs of terracotta and brown.

Hands holding a plant are genuinely tricky, so simplify them to simple rounded shapes gripping the stem rather than drawing individual fingers, which reads fine at this loose scale. The snowy window behind her, painted last in a pale cream and grey wash, is what explains the whole indoor scene without a single word of text.

Palette: Terracotta,Sap Green,Cream,Soft Blush

A cat batting at a trailing ivy leaf on the windowsill gives you a second cat moment with real movement this time, after the sleepy monstera cat earlier. Draw the ivy trailing down from its pot first, then place the cat below with one paw raised mid-swipe at a single loose leaf, since a sleeping cat needs stillness but a playing cat needs one clear gesture to read as action.

Paint the ivy leaves in small pointed sage green shapes along the trailing vine, keeping them sparse rather than dense so the cat’s paw and the leaf it is reaching for stay the clearest shapes on the page. The cat’s body can go down as one confident warm-toned shape with the raised paw left slightly separated in the drawing stage so it reads against the background rather than blending into the torso.

A static-looking paw is the main risk here: angle it slightly diagonal rather than straight up, which does more to suggest motion than any amount of detail would. If a live cat will not sit still for reference, a short cat video paused on a mid-swipe frame works better than a posed photo.

Palette: Sap Green,Burnt Sienna,Terracotta,Cream

A jade plant beside a steaming mug and an open sketchbook is a quieter, closer still life, good for when you want fewer elements to manage. Draw the jade plant’s thick oval leaves first, in small clustered pairs along chunky stems, since jade leaves are notably plumper than most houseplant leaves and that roundness is the whole character of the plant.

Paint the leaves in a cool sage or moss green, leaving a pale highlight unpainted on the rounded top of each leaf where light catches the slightly waxy surface, and let a touch of terracotta blush into the leaf edges where real jade often reddens in bright light. The mug beside it can take one flat wash in terracotta or cream with a loose curl of steam suggested in thin pale grey, and the open sketchbook page stays mostly white with a few casual pencil-like ink scribbles.

Thin, spindly jade stems are the main mistake: keep the stems chunky and short relative to the leaves, since a jade plant’s charm is its stubby, succulent look rather than any delicacy.

Palette: Sap Green,Moss Green,Terracotta,Cream

A potted rosemary bush on a stone step dusted with snow takes a kitchen herb outdoors and lets you paint stone texture for the first time in this list. Draw the rosemary’s many thin upright stems first, in loose vertical clusters rather than one solid mass, since rosemary’s wiry, needle-like growth is what separates it from a rounder herb like basil.

Paint the needles with the tip of a fine brush in short flicking strokes of greyish sage green, working from the base of each stem upward, and leave small gaps of white paper between clusters so the plant keeps its airy, upright character. The stone step underneath can take a mottled grey-cream wash dabbed unevenly, with a scatter of bare white paper left for the dusting of snow sitting in the stone’s natural texture.

Painting rosemary as solid green masses rather than individual flicked strokes is the fastest way to lose the plant’s texture, so slow down on the needle strokes even if everything else in the scene stays loose. A terracotta pot at the base, painted last, grounds the whole upright cluster.

Palette: Sap Green,Payne’s Grey,Terracotta,Cream

A blue hyacinth in a pot next to a bowl of soup pairs a forced bulb with a warm meal, a small domestic pairing that is easy to love once it is on paper. Draw the hyacinth’s dense flower spike first, built from many tiny overlapping bell shapes rather than one smooth outline, then place the soup bowl beside it at a slightly lower height so the flower stays the tallest element in the scene.

Paint the hyacinth in a true blue-purple, working wet into wet so the tiny bells blur softly into each other rather than reading as separate dots, which actually suits a hyacinth’s dense bloom better than crisp individual petals would. The soup bowl can take a warm terracotta or cream wash with a thin steam curl rising above it, painted in the same pale grey technique used for the earlier steaming mug.

A hyacinth spike that is too narrow looks thin and sparse: widen the flower cluster more than feels natural at first, since the real plant’s bloom is genuinely dense and chunky compared to most other spring bulbs.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Soft Blush,Terracotta,Sap Green

A glass plant cabinet full of greenery in a city apartment is the most ambitious still life on this list, several plants layered behind glass shelves, so plan the shelf lines in pencil before any leaves go in. Draw three horizontal shelf lines first, then fill each shelf with one or two different plant shapes, varying leaf type and height from shelf to shelf so the cabinet does not look like one plant repeated three times.

Paint each shelf’s plants with their own green mix, perhaps a trailing vine on top, a fern in the middle and a cluster of small succulents on the bottom, which gives your eye plenty to explore without any single plant needing heavy detail. The glass cabinet frame itself can go in last with a few clean ink lines for the shelf edges and cabinet door, left mostly open rather than boxed in tightly, since a half-suggested frame reads as glass more convincingly than a fully drawn one.

Too much detail on every leaf across three shelves gets exhausting fast and muddies the whole piece: keep the top shelf loosest and let detail increase slightly toward the bottom shelf, which also guides the eye downward through the cabinet naturally.

Palette: Sap Green,Moss Green,Terracotta,Payne’s Grey

Working on this one on a larger sheet gives you room to let each shelf breathe. A half sheet or full sheet of watercolor paper suits a cabinet with three shelves better than a small block.

Paperwhites in a bowl of pebbles by a frosted window return to forced bulbs with a different growing medium than the jars from earlier, pebbles instead of water, which changes what you paint at the base of the stems. Draw the wide shallow bowl first, then scatter small pebble shapes across its surface before the paperwhite stems rise up through them.

Paint the pebbles as small irregular ovals in mixed greys and creams, varying the tone of each one so the bowl reads as a real mix of stones rather than a flat grey mass, and let the white paperwhite flowers stay mostly bare paper with just a pale cream shadow wash in the petal folds. The frosted window behind can repeat the soft out-of-focus wash technique from the orchid’s steamy mirror, kept pale and loose so it never competes with the white flowers in front of it.

Pebbles painted all one flat grey lose their individual stone character fast: mix at least three slightly different grey-cream tones and place them without any obvious pattern across the bowl.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Cream,Sap Green,Terracotta

A Meyer lemon tree heavy with fruit in a white living room gives citrus one more variation, this time set against a plain pale interior rather than a window scene, so the tree itself has to carry the whole composition. Build the trunk and canopy first as before, but this time load more lemons onto the branches than in the earlier lemon tree idea, since a Meyer lemon tree in full fruit is noticeably heavier with colour and that is the detail worth exaggerating here.

Paint the lemons in warm yellow-gold with a touch of moss green shadow where they nestle against the leaves, clustering several together on lower branches where a real tree would carry the most weight. Because the room around it is kept plain and pale, almost white, the leaf and fruit colours get to read at full strength without a window frame or snowy view to share attention with.

A canopy with fruit scattered too evenly looks artificial: let two or three branches hang noticeably heavier with lemons than the rest, mimicking how real fruit trees cluster unevenly.

Palette: Moss Green,Yellow Ochre,Terracotta,Cream

A spider plant in a macrame hanger above a reading nook brings in a hanging plant with its own distinctive trailing babies, which is a different kind of trail than the pothos or string of pearls earlier. Draw the macrame hanger’s knotted rope pattern loosely first, a few simple crossed lines rather than every individual knot, then let the spider plant’s long thin striped leaves arch up and outward from the pot before some trail down past the hanger’s edge.

Paint the leaves in sap green with a thin unpainted stripe left down the centre of each blade, since variegated stripe is the spider plant’s signature feature and is quicker to leave blank than to paint in cream afterward. The small plantlets dangling on their own thin stems below the main plant are worth adding, a few tiny rosette shapes on wiry lines, since they are what makes a spider plant instantly identifiable to anyone who has grown one.

A reading nook glimpse below, a lamp or a chair arm in soft cream and terracotta, roots the hanging plant in a real room without much extra painting.

Palette: Sap Green,Cream,Terracotta,Payne’s Grey

Snowdrops potted in an old teacup on a windowsill bring the smallest, most delicate bulb flower on this list, worth painting carefully after so many bolder subjects. Draw the teacup first, slightly worn and chipped if you like, then the snowdrop’s thin arching stems with the small nodding flower heads drooping down rather than standing upright, which is the detail that makes a snowdrop a snowdrop.

Paint the white petals mostly as bare paper again, with the tiniest touch of pale sage green at the base of each drooping bloom where the real flower shows a green marking, and keep the stems thin and slightly curved rather than ruler-straight. The teacup can carry a little visible wear, a chip at the rim or a faded pattern, painted in muted terracotta or cream to suggest age without fussy detail.

Snowdrops drawn standing upright instantly look wrong to anyone who knows the flower, so double check each flower head droops before you paint, comparing the angle against a reference rather than guessing from memory.

Palette: Sap Green,Cream,Terracotta,Payne’s Grey

A girl misting a fern beside a steamy winter window brings action and water spray together in one gentle scene. Draw the fern’s fronds first, in the same feathery technique as the earlier reading-chair ferns, then place her hand and spray bottle just beside one frond tip rather than overlapping the whole plant, which keeps both the figure and the fern readable as separate shapes.

Paint the mist from the spray bottle with the tiniest flicks of a near-dry white gel pen or a few flicked drops of masking fluid removed after painting, scattered loosely around the nozzle rather than in a perfect cone. Her figure can stay a simple soft-toned silhouette, with only the hand and spray bottle picked out in a touch more ink detail since that is the part of the gesture that tells the story.

A spray mist that looks like a solid white shape rather than scattered droplets reads as a mistake rather than water: keep the dots small, irregular and spaced apart, never one connected blob. The steamy window behind, painted soft and blurred as before, finishes the warm, humid feel of the scene.

You Will Need

• white gel pen or masking fluid for mist droplets

Palette: Sap Green,Moss Green,Soft Blush,Cream

A basket of potted hellebores by the front door in the snow brings a winter-flowering plant right up to the threshold of the home, a nice note to end the indoor scenes on before the very last idea. Draw the woven basket first using the same loose curved pencil marks as the earlier grape hyacinth basket, then add the hellebore’s nodding, slightly cupped flowers facing downward and outward in a loose cluster above the leaves.

Paint the hellebore petals in muted blush, cream or soft burgundy-terracotta tones, since real hellebores come in these quiet, slightly dusty colours rather than bright ones, and let the broad dark green leaves beneath fan out to support the flower cluster visually. Snow on the doorstep around the basket stays bare white paper with a thin pale grey wash for shadow where the basket presses into the snow, and the door itself can be hinted at with just a vertical line or two of colour at the frame’s edge.

Hellebore flowers painted facing straight up lose their nodding character, so angle most of the blooms downward or sideways, checking against a reference if the droop feels unnatural at first.

Palette: Soft Blush,Terracotta,Moss Green,Payne’s Grey

Close the list the way houseplant windowsills often start, with an avocado pit sprouting in a glass on a sunny sill, the familiar toothpick-suspended pit with roots reaching down and a single stem reaching up. Draw the glass first, then the pit balanced at its rim on three small toothpick lines, with the split root mass hanging into the water below and the pale stem and first leaves rising above.

Paint the water the same pale grey-blue wash used for the earlier jars and bottles, then the pit itself in a mix of terracotta brown with a hint of cream where the skin has started to crack and lighten, which is the detail that signals germination rather than just a whole uncut pit. The first leaves at the top should go down last in a fresh, slightly yellow-green, since new avocado growth is noticeably paler than an established plant’s leaves.

Toothpicks drawn too thick make the whole suspension look clumsy: use the very tip of your pen for three thin lines only, since their delicacy is part of what makes this small windowsill project recognisable at a glance.

What to Do Next

Pick one idea that matches a plant you can actually see from where you are sitting, whether that is a kitchen herb pot or a jar of rooting bulbs on the sill, and start with a loose pencil sketch on a half sheet of cold press paper. Keep the first wash wet and simple, add the ink detail once it dries, and let today’s painting be the start of a small winter windowsill series rather than one perfect page.

Cold press watercolor paper around 140 pound weight works best for this style. It takes wet into wet washes without buckling and still holds a crisp line when you add ink detail once the paint dries.

How do you keep watercolor leaves from looking flat?

Drop a second, slightly darker green into the leaf while the first wash is still damp, letting the two blend only at the edge. That single wet into wet move gives a leaf shadow and depth without any extra brushwork.

Should I draw the plant in pencil before painting it?

Yes, a light pencil sketch of the pot, stems and major leaf shapes keeps proportions honest before you commit paint. Keep the pencil lines faint enough to vanish under the wash or be covered by the final ink detail.

What if I do not have the exact houseplant to paint from?

Any photo of a similar plant, even from a seed catalogue or a houseplant account, gives you the leaf shape and growth habit you need. Winter windowsill scenes work from imagination and reference just as well as from a plant in front of you.

How do I add the fine ink line without it looking too stiff?

Add ink only after the watercolor is fully dry, and keep the line loose and slightly broken rather than tracing every edge. Use it mainly for stems, pot rims and small details, not as an outline around the whole plant.
