Tree painting in winter gives you one strong shape, a quiet palette and a small story to tell in every canvas: a bird on a branch, a sled track in the snow, a low pink sun behind bare limbs. There is no busy background to fuss over, just a tree, some snow and one detail that makes it feel like a particular morning rather than a generic scene.
Below are 29 small canvases, each built around one tree and one winter moment, moving from the simplest shapes to the ones with a little more going on. Pick whichever one speaks to you today, since every single one is designed to finish in a single sitting.

Start with the sky, since it sets the mood for everything else. Block in a soft gradient from pale pink near the horizon up into a cool lavender blue, blending the two wet into wet with a wide flat brush before anything else goes on the canvas.
Once the sky is dry to the touch, paint the snowy field as one flat band of white with a hint of blue shadow along the bottom edge. Use a small round brush to build the oak’s trunk and main limbs in dark brown, then thin that same color with water to pull out a few finer branches at the top.
If this is your first time painting a tree silhouette, keep the branch count low: five or six main limbs read better than a tangle of twigs. A common mistake is making the trunk too thin for the canopy of branches it holds, so widen the base slightly if it starts to look unstable.
Measure the trunk against the canvas height first: a mature oak’s trunk usually runs about a fifth of the total height, which keeps the proportions believable before you add a single branch.
Palette: Titanium White,Quinacridone Pink,Payne’s Grey,Burnt Umber
Snowy pines work best painted as a group, so block the whole row in first as simple dark green triangles before any snow touches them. Keep the shapes loose and vary the height a little from tree to tree so the row does not look stamped out with a cookie cutter.
Once the green shapes are dry, dab snow onto the upper branches with a dry, barely loaded flat brush, pressing lightly so the white catches only the raised texture rather than filling in solid. Paint the frozen lake as a flat pale grey-blue band beneath the trees, and pull a few short vertical strokes down from each trunk for a simple reflection.
The most common slip here is making every pine identical, so stagger their heights and tilt one or two slightly for a far more natural row. If you do not have a dry brush technique mastered yet, a sponge dabbed in white works just as well for a quick, convincing dusting of snow.
Keep one tip in your pocket for today: load your brush with far less paint than feels right when you dab on snow, since a dry brush always reads better than a loaded one.
Palette: Hooker’s Green,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Cerulean Blue
A small natural sponge dabbed lightly in white paint gives a faster, more textured snow effect than a brush if you want to finish this one quickly.
Bare branches against a pale lemon sky give you a chance to paint light first and detail second. Cover the whole canvas in a soft lemon-yellow wash, graduating it slightly cooler toward the top, and let that dry completely before any branches go on top.
Switch to a thin round brush or even a liner brush for the branches themselves, starting at one thick trunk line and splitting it into thinner and thinner limbs as you move outward. Since the sky sits behind the branches, you are painting on top of a light background, so keep your branch color dark enough to hold its own against that glow.
Think about where the light source sits before you start: a low winter sun behind pale yellow light means the branches should read almost as a silhouette, with no highlights breaking up their dark shape. Add the crow last as a small solid black shape perched near one of the upper limbs, keeping it simple rather than fussing over feather detail.
If lemon yellow feels too sweet for your taste, a pale warm grey sky gives the same graphic branch silhouette with a cooler, quieter mood.
Palette: Lemon Yellow,Payne’s Grey,Ivory Black,Titanium White
A willow’s hanging branches are the whole point of this painting, so give yourself room to let them drape all the way down toward the water. Paint the trunk short and leaning slightly, then use a thin brush loaded with pale grey-green to pull long curving strokes downward for each cascade of branches, letting several overlap.
Once the main willow shape is in, mix a thin white wash and flick tiny dots of frost along the branch tips with the edge of an old credit card or a stiff toothbrush. Paint the frozen pond beneath as a flat pale ice-blue shape with one or two white scratch marks for texture.
The place this painting tends to go wrong is overworking every single branch, which quickly turns busy. Instead, let a handful of confident sweeping lines do the work, and leave the rest to suggestion with soft color rather than more lines.
Try the quick version in about ten minutes by keeping the willow to five or six main branch clusters; the longer forty-minute version adds finer frost detail and a soft reflection of the willow in the ice below.

An apple tree in winter reads as a bare, slightly gnarled version of its summer self, so start with a short thick trunk that splits into several twisting branches rather than one tall straight shape. Snow sits in soft white mounds along the tops of the branches, best added with a small flat brush pressed and lifted rather than dragged.
Leave one small gap near the end of a branch unpainted until last, then drop in a single bright red dot for the last apple. That one spot of warm color against all the cool white and brown is what makes this painting work, so keep every other color in the muted, frosty family.
A common mistake is placing the red apple dead center, where it fights with the trunk for attention. Push it off to one side, near the outer edge of the canopy, so the eye travels across the whole tree before landing on it.
If you want a little more story in this scene, add two or three soft shadow birds in the orchard rows behind, blurred and small so they stay in the background.
Palette: Burnt Sienna,Titanium White,Cadmium Red,Payne’s Grey
Spruce branches droop under heavy snow rather than staying stiff, so build the tree from the top down with each layer of branches angled slightly lower than the one above it. Paint the dark green shape first in full, then come back with white dabbed heavily along the top of each branch tier, letting it pile up thickest near the trunk.
Once the snow layers are in, perch a tiny bird near the very top where the tree narrows to a point, using just two or three brushstrokes for its body and a flick for the tail. That small bit of life at the top balances all the weight of the snow lower down.
If the branches start to look flat, check your eye level: looking up slightly at a tall spruce from below makes the lower branches appear wider and the top narrower and further away, which reads as height.
A simple swap if you are short on green paint: mix blue and yellow fresh on the palette rather than buying a tube, since a slightly uneven hand-mixed green actually suits snowy conifers better than a flat tube color.
Palette: Hooker’s Green,Titanium White,Ultramarine Blue,Raw Umber
This one asks you to think in perspective rather than a single tree, since the lane’s two rows of trees need to shrink as they travel toward a vanishing point near the horizon. Sketch a simple horizon line first, then place trees smaller and closer together the further back they sit, which does most of the depth work for you before any paint goes on.
Paint the lane itself as a pale path narrowing between the rows, then build each tree as a simple trunk and a loose snow-capped canopy, keeping the back rows quicker and less detailed than the front ones. Snow falling can be suggested with a few soft white dots flicked across the whole canvas once everything else is dry.
Where this painting usually goes wrong is making every tree in the row the same size, which flattens the whole sense of distance. Vary the spacing and size deliberately as the lane recedes, and the illusion holds together.
For a scene like this, the winter forest painting ideas are worth a look if you want more ways to handle rows of trees receding into distance.
Palette: Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Burnt Umber,Pale Grey Blue
A cedar’s silhouette is wide and layered, almost like soft shelves stacked on top of each other, so block in its outline first as one large rounded mass rather than a neat triangle. Vary the edge with small bumps and dips so it does not read as a solid green blob once the snow goes on top.
Add snow in patches along the upper shelves of branches using a dry flat brush, leaving the undersides of the branches dark and shadowed for contrast. A small wooden bench painted at the base, just a few confident strokes of brown with white snow piled along its seat, gives the whole scene a human scale and an instant sense of place.
If the cedar starts to feel too heavy or dark, lighten a few patches of green with a touch of white mixed in before you apply the final snow dabs, which keeps the tree from going flat and lifeless.
Once this composition feels comfortable, try varying it next time with a lamppost beside the bench instead, or swap the cedar for a wider, shorter shape to suggest an older, more weathered tree.
Palette: Hooker’s Green,Titanium White,Burnt Umber,Payne’s Grey
Rowan trees in winter keep their berry clusters even after the leaves drop, which gives you a lovely excuse for small bright dots of red against all that white and grey. Build the bare branch structure first in thin dark strokes, then cap the main limbs with soft white snow using a small flat brush.
Once the snow is dry, load a round brush with red and dot small berry clusters along a few of the outer twigs, three or four dots grouped together rather than scattered evenly across the whole tree. That clustering is what reads as berries rather than random spots.
A frequent issue is painting berries that look pasted on top rather than part of the branch, so let a tiny twig mark show through or beside each cluster to anchor it visually. If red feels too bold for your palette today, a deep orange works just as well for rowan berries and sits a little softer against the snow.
Keep today’s tip simple: paint all your berry clusters in one go while the red is still wet on your brush, so the color stays consistent across the whole tree.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Cadmium Red,Burnt Sienna
An old tree with character needs a trunk that leans or bends slightly rather than standing perfectly straight, so sketch that lean in early with a loose charcoal or thin paint line before committing to color. Build the bark texture with a palette knife dragged lightly through slightly thickened brown paint, which catches light along its ridges far better than a flat brush stroke.
The swing itself is just two thin ropes dropping from a thick branch to a small wooden seat, painted last in a few quick strokes once the tree and snow are settled. Keep the ropes slightly uneven rather than perfectly parallel, since a little imperfection reads as rope hanging naturally rather than a ruler-straight line.
Where this scene can go wrong is making the swing too large or too central, which pulls focus away from the tree itself. Keep it small, tucked under one strong branch, so it reads as a quiet detail rather than the main subject.
If a palette knife feels awkward, an old credit card edge scraped through wet paint gives a similar rough bark texture without any new tools to buy.

A hawthorn hedge gives you a wide, tangled mass of small branches rather than one clear trunk, so work it as a loose dark shape first with a bigger brush before any fine detail comes in. Drag a dry stiff brush over the top in white to catch stray twig tips with frost, letting plenty of the dark hedge show through underneath.
Low winter sun sitting just above the horizon behind the hedge means one edge should catch a warm highlight while the rest stays in cool shadow. Mix a touch of pale gold or pink into your white for just that one sunlit edge, keeping the highlight thin and confined to the top and one side of the hedge shape.
If the whole hedge starts to look like a flat dark smudge, break up the silhouette with a few short twig lines poking above the main mass, which gives it a more convincing, slightly wild hawthorn shape.
A quick swap: a dry sea sponge dabbed in white and gold gives the same sparkling frost effect as a stiff dry brush, if that is what you already have on hand.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Pale Gold,Burnt Umber
A windswept pine leans hard in one direction, its branches pushed mostly to the leeward side, which is what sells the whole idea of wind. Angle the trunk off vertical early on, then paint the branches sweeping outward only on the side away from the prevailing direction, keeping the windward side bare and sparse.
Below the cliff, the winter sea reads as a few flat bands of grey-blue getting paler toward the horizon, with a thin line of white for a wave breaking against the rock. Keep the cliff itself a simple dark shape, since all the visual interest should stay with the bent pine above it.
The eye level matters here: set the horizon low on the canvas so the pine and cliff tower above the sea, which gives the whole scene drama and height. A higher horizon flattens the composition and makes the tree feel smaller than it should.
Start the quick ten-minute version with just the bent trunk, one sweep of branches and a flat sea; the forty-minute version adds the rock texture on the cliff face and a sharper highlight where the low sun hits the sea.
Palette: Hooker’s Green,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Slate Blue
This pine’s charm is in its flat, horizontal branch shelves rather than any upward growth, so sketch the trunk first with a tight zigzag twist before adding a single flat branch tier jutting out at each turn. Keep the branch shapes wide and thin rather than round, almost like small green plates stacked at angles up the trunk.
Snow sits along the top of each flat branch in a thin, even line rather than a pile, since these branches are too narrow to hold a deep drift. A fine round brush dragged lightly in one pass along each branch top gives exactly that clean line of white.
Compare the trunk’s twist to a letter shape if it helps: many bonsai pines read close to an S or a Z bent sideways, which is a useful shorthand to keep the twist believable rather than random wobbles.
If flat branch tiers feel tricky to paint convincingly, practice the shape first on scrap paper as a simple elongated triangle lying on its side before committing to the canvas.
Palette: Hooker’s Green,Titanium White,Burnt Umber,Pale Grey Blue
Plane trees along a park avenue give you a repeating pattern of trunks that you can simplify into a rhythm rather than painting each one in full detail. Lay the avenue path first as a pale curving band, then place trunks on alternating sides, each one a little smaller as the row bends away into the distance.
Their mottled bark is a nice detail if you want it: dab a few patches of lighter tan over the darker brown trunk color while it is still slightly wet, letting the two blend just a little at the edges. Snow collects on the few remaining high branches and along the path edges in soft white mounds.
A common problem with avenues like this is spacing the trunks too evenly, which looks mechanical rather than natural. Nudge a few closer together and a few further apart, and the row immediately feels more like a real park.
If city parks are your thing, the winter painting ideas collection has more scenes built around paths and avenues in snow worth browsing for inspiration.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Titanium White,Raw Sienna,Payne’s Grey
Build the giant fir first as a tall, dense green triangle, since it needs to dominate the canvas before the smaller fallen log and tracks earn their place at its base. Snow sits heavy along the fir’s branch layers, applied with a dry brush working from the trunk outward along each tier.
The fallen log lies across the base as a simple horizontal cylinder shape, shaded dark along its underside and catching a thin strip of white snow along its top edge. A few short curved marks scraped into wet white paint with the end of your brush handle suggest animal tracks circling the log without needing to paint each paw print in detail.
If the log reads as flat rather than round, add one more shadow line along its lower edge where it meets the snow, which grounds it and gives it some real volume.
Vary this scene next time by swapping the tracks for a small trail of footprints leading away into the trees, which turns the same setup into a quieter, more mysterious moment.
Palette: Hooker’s Green,Titanium White,Burnt Umber,Payne’s Grey
Beech trees famously hang onto a scatter of dried copper leaves well into winter, which gives you a warm color to play against all the cool white and grey elsewhere in this painting. Paint the bare branch structure first, then scatter small flat dabs of copper and rust across just a portion of the canopy rather than covering it evenly.
Snow settles on the branches and ground as usual, but leave the areas directly behind the copper leaves slightly less snowy so the warm color has room to stand out against a darker background. A palette knife loaded with a mix of burnt sienna and a touch of orange gives a nice ragged edge to each small leaf cluster.
The tricky part here is balance: too many leaves and the tree stops looking like winter, too few and the copper barely registers. Aim for the leaves to cover roughly a third of the branch area, concentrated more toward the lower half of the canopy where beech leaves tend to cling longest.
If a palette knife is not to hand, the corner of an old flat brush dabbed and twisted slightly gives a similar ragged leaf-cluster shape.

A treehouse adds a small structure to balance against all the organic branch shapes, so block in the old maple’s trunk and main limbs first, keeping it wide and a little gnarled to read as an older tree. Paint the treehouse as a simple geometric box tucked into a fork of two branches, with a flat roof catching a cap of snow just like the branches around it.
A tiny ladder or rope leading up to the treehouse door gives the scene a sense of scale and story, painted last in two or three thin confident lines. Keep the treehouse windows dark or unlit, since a warm glowing window would shift the whole mood toward evening rather than a bright winter day.
Where this one often goes wrong is making the treehouse too large relative to the tree, which makes the maple look flimsy. Measure the treehouse against the trunk’s width first: it should sit comfortably within two or three times the trunk’s thickness, not dwarf it.
If you enjoy small structures tucked into nature scenes, the winter wonderland painting ideas include several more cabins and little buildings worth a look for the same kind of composition.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Raw Sienna
Painting a reflection means doubling your tree, almost, so once the main tree is finished above the waterline, flip its basic shape upside down below it, softened and slightly stretched. Use a dry brush dragged horizontally across the wet reflection to break it up into streaks, which instantly reads as water rather than a mirror image.
Half-frozen water needs patches of ice breaking up the reflection entirely, so leave a few irregular pale shapes untouched by the reflection color, as if solid ice sits there instead. Dawn light means a soft pink or gold wash low across the sky and water, fading up into cooler blue toward the top of the canvas.
If the reflection ends up looking like a second solid tree rather than water, thin your paint more and drag the dry brush strokes more aggressively across it, breaking the shape up further.
Keep today’s tip close at hand: always paint the reflection a touch darker and softer in edge than the tree itself, since water never mirrors light as brightly as the sky does.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Quinacridone Pink,Burnt Umber
Cypresses are tall, narrow and pointed, almost like dark green exclamation marks standing in a row up a hillside, so paint each one as a thin elongated triangle rather than a wide conifer shape. Vary their height just slightly along the row to follow the rise and fall of the hill beneath them.
The hill itself works best as a simple curved shape in pale snowy white with a soft blue shadow along one side, since the real character of this scene comes from the row of dark narrow trees against that pale slope. A rare dusting of snow on a Tuscan hillside is lighter and patchier than a full northern snowfall, so leave a little of the warm ochre earth showing through in patches.
If the cypresses start looking stiff and identical, lean two or three of them very slightly off vertical, which happens naturally in real rows planted long ago.
Try the quick version in ten minutes with five simple cypress triangles and a flat hill; the forty-minute version adds the patchy snow and a distant stone farmhouse at the base of the hill.
Palette: Hooker’s Green,Titanium White,Yellow Ochre,Pale Grey Blue
The lone hilltop tree stays the main subject here, so keep it large and detailed while the sledding children stay small and simple near the base of the hill. Paint the tree first with its bare winter branches against the sky, then shape the hill below it as one smooth curving slope of white.
Children sledding need only a handful of strokes each: a small colorful dot for a coat, a thin curved line for the sled, and a short streak behind to suggest motion down the slope. Keep two or three figures at most, spaced out along the hill rather than clustered together, so each one reads clearly even at a small size.
The usual mistake is making the figures too detailed, which pulls focus away from the tree and flattens the sense of distance. Simplify further than feels comfortable, since at this scale, a few confident dabs of color read far better than careful little faces.
If figures feel intimidating to paint, start with just one small sledding child rather than several, and add more only once that first one feels right.
Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Cadmium Red,Burnt Umber
Fog softens everything, so this tree should have the softest edges of any idea on this list. Paint the background first as a flat pale grey-white wash, then build the tree on top while the background is still slightly damp, letting the branch edges blur gently into the fog rather than staying crisp.
A light touch with white dry-brushed over the frosted branches adds the ice without hardening the edges back up again. The deer at the base should be just a simple dark silhouette, legs and body kept minimal, standing still rather than mid-stride, which suits the quiet mood of fog far better than any sense of movement.
If the tree ends up too sharp against the soft fog, go back with a clean damp brush and gently blend just the outer edges of the branches back into the background.
For more ideas built around quiet snowy atmosphere and soft animal silhouettes, the winter forest painting list pairs well with this one.
Palette: Pale Grey,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Ivory Black
Hoarfrost coats every single twig in white, which means almost none of the tree’s dark bark color shows through at all, unlike a simple snow-capped tree. Start by painting the branch structure in a pale icy blue-white rather than brown, since the frost fully covers the color beneath it.
Build up texture with small flicks of pure white from a stiff dry brush or an old toothbrush, covering the branch tips most heavily and letting the color thin out toward the thicker inner branches. The icy blue sky behind should stay smooth and flat so all the textured sparkle of the tree has somewhere calm to sit against.
If the tree starts blending too much into the sky, add a thin edge of slightly darker blue along the outer silhouette to separate the two, which keeps the frosted shape readable even though both are close in color.
A simple swap when white paint alone feels flat: mix in a tiny touch of pearl or iridescent medium if you have one, which gives hoarfrost a believable sparkle under indoor light.

Cherry trees in winter have a particularly elegant branch structure, often more delicate and upward reaching than other bare trees, so keep your lines thin and let the branches fan outward rather than droop. Build the trunk and main limbs first, then add finer twigs with a liner brush once the structure feels balanced.
The birdhouse sits on one of the mid-level branches, painted as a simple small house shape with a peaked roof, a round hole, and a thin cap of snow along the roofline just like the branches around it. Keep its colors muted, a faded red or soft grey, so it reads as weathered rather than freshly painted.
If the branches start to feel too symmetrical, remember that real trees rarely balance perfectly on both sides, so let one side carry more branch weight than the other.
If you enjoy pairing small structures with bare branches, the cardinal drawing ideas page has several more birdhouse and branch compositions worth browsing.
Palette: Burnt Umber,Titanium White,Faded Red,Payne’s Grey
This one builds depth with layers, so start with the furthest trees as a simple soft blue-green mass, then paint a middle row slightly darker and more defined, and finish with a few close, detailed pines in the foreground. That layering alone creates most of the sense of a forest edge rather than one flat row of trees.
Tuck the red cabin between two of the middle-distance pines, keeping it small and partly hidden so it feels discovered rather than placed front and center. A single warm red roof against all that cool green and white carries a surprising amount of visual weight, so resist painting more than one small building.
The usual trap here is giving the background trees as much detail as the foreground ones, which collapses the sense of depth entirely. Keep brushwork looser and edges softer the further back a tree sits.
For more ideas that build a snowy forest with layered depth like this, the winter forest painting ideas collection is a good next stop.
Palette: Hooker’s Green,Titanium White,Cadmium Red,Slate Blue
Olive trees have a distinctive gnarled, almost sculptural trunk, so spend more time than usual on its twists and hollows before worrying about the branches at all. Use a palette knife to push and drag thick paint for the trunk, building ridges and dips that catch real light and shadow.
The silvery grey-green leaves stay mostly visible even under a light snow, since olive trees rarely get buried the way conifers do. Dab leaf clusters in soft sage and silver tones first, then add only a light scatter of white across the topmost leaves and along the trunk’s upper ridges, rather than a full blanket of snow.
A frequent mistake is painting too much snow on an olive tree, which looks wrong for a tree from a place that almost never sees it. Keep the snow sparse and patchy, more a dusting than a covering, to keep the scene believable.
If a palette knife feels unfamiliar for trunk texture, thick paint applied straight from the tube and dragged with a stiff old brush gives a similar rugged surface.

Build the evergreen as a full, dense triangle shape first, layering darker and lighter greens so the tree has some depth before any snow or detail goes on. Snow caps each branch tier in soft white, applied with a dry brush working from the outer tips inward.
The cardinal is the real star here, so give it slightly more care than the rest: a simple round body shape, a small pointed crest, and a short beak, painted in one bright confident red with a touch of black around the face. Add a small sprig of berries just beside or below the bird to echo its color elsewhere in the composition, keeping the two close enough that the eye connects them.
If the red cardinal disappears against the green, check that you have left the branch area right around it slightly darker or less snowy, since that contrast is what makes the bird pop rather than blend in.

Palette: Hooker’s Green,Titanium White,Cadmium Red,Ivory Black
Sunset light sits low and warm, which throws a long cool shadow in the opposite direction, and that contrast between warm light and cool shadow is really the whole subject of this painting. Paint the tree first in simple silhouette against a warm pink-orange sky, then turn to the field.
The field itself should be mostly a warm white picking up the sunset’s glow, except for one long diagonal shadow in cool blue-violet stretching away from the tree’s base. Keep that shadow’s edge soft near the tree and slightly sharper as it stretches further across the snow, which mimics how real light falls at a low angle.
If the shadow ends up too short to feel dramatic, remember that low winter sun casts shadows many times the height of the object casting them, so do not be shy about letting it run most of the way across the canvas.
Once this one works, try varying it next time with the sun positioned to the opposite side, which flips the whole shadow direction and changes the entire mood of the piece.
Palette: Titanium White,Quinacridone Pink,Ultramarine Violet,Payne’s Grey
A sequoia’s whole appeal is scale, so give the trunk real width, filling a good portion of the canvas on its own before any branches even start. Use a palette knife or a dry stiff brush to build deep bark texture with long vertical ridges, varying the brown tones from dark umber to a warmer rust in places.
Branches on a sequoia sit high up and spread wide, so keep the lower two thirds of the trunk mostly bare, with snow collecting only where the first real branches begin. The tiny hiker standing at the base, no more than a small dot of color with the faintest suggestion of a backpack, is what sells the tree’s size, so keep that figure deliberately small against the massive trunk.
If the sense of scale is not reading, check the hiker’s size against the trunk width: the figure should look almost absurdly small, closer to a tenth of the trunk’s width, for the giant feel to land.
A quick swap if bark texture feels daunting: a crumpled piece of plastic wrap pressed into wet brown paint gives a convincing rough bark pattern with very little effort.

A young fir is smaller and neater than the older conifers elsewhere on this list, so keep its triangle shape tidy and fairly symmetrical, closer to a classic holiday tree silhouette. Snow sits in small, even caps along each branch tier, less wild and heavy than an older tree would carry.
The dog sniffing at its base is the small action that makes this scene feel alive, built from a simple rounded body, a lowered head near the trunk, and a short tail, all in two or three confident colors rather than fussy fur detail. Keep the dog’s pose clearly bent toward the tree, since a straight standing posture loses the sense of sniffing entirely.
If the dog ends up looking stiff, loosen your grip on the brush and paint the body shape in one or two quick strokes rather than building it up slowly, since animals read better from confident gesture than careful outline.
For more small animals paired with winter scenes at this same friendly scale, the winter painting ideas for beginners collection has several worth a look.

What to Do Next
Pick one tree that matches how much time you have today, set up a small canvas, and mix your frosty blues and greens before you start so you are not hunting for color mid-stroke. Start simple if this is new to you, a bare tree against a plain sky works just as well as the busier scenes, and build toward the ones with birds, figures or reflections once the first one feels comfortable.
Frequently Asked Questions
What paint colors do I need for a winter tree painting?
A workable winter palette needs titanium white, a dark grey like Payne’s grey, a deep green, a burnt umber or sienna, and one warm accent like pink or red. That small set covers snow, bark, evergreen branches and the single bright detail most of these paintings use.
How do I paint realistic snow on tree branches with acrylic?
Load a flat or fan brush with very little white paint, wipe most of it off on a paper towel, then drag it lightly across the top edge of each branch. This dry brush method leaves broken, textured white rather than a solid painted line, which reads far more like real snow.
What is the easiest tree to paint for a beginner?
A single bare tree against a plain sky is the easiest option, since it needs only a trunk, a handful of branches and one simple background color. Start there before moving on to conifers, which add branch layers and snow texture.
How do I stop my tree branches from looking stiff or unnatural?
Vary the thickness and angle of every branch rather than repeating the same shape, and let a few branches overlap or cross slightly. Real trees never grow symmetrically, so a little deliberate unevenness always reads as more convincing than a tidy, matched set of limbs.
Can I paint these winter tree scenes without a sky gradient?
Yes, a single flat pale color works fine as a background and keeps the focus entirely on the tree itself. Save the gradient skies for when you want extra atmosphere, such as a sunrise or sunset scene, rather than using one on every canvas.
