31 Winter Forest Painting Ideas With Cozy Woodland Moments and Snowy Pines

47

A winter forest painting gives you the best kind of quiet: deep green pines, cool blue shadows and one small moment of warmth tucked somewhere in the scene. That is what makes these so satisfying to paint with gouache. You build them in flat layered shapes, the way a printmaker would think, so there is no fuss about blending and every edge stays clean and calm.

Below you will find 31 separate forest scenes, each with its own creature or cozy detail, from a deer stepping out of the trees to a little chapel tucked among the pines. Pick whichever one speaks to you tonight, mix your greens and blues, and let the dry brush do the snow for you.

Start the whole series with a deer stepping out between snowy pines, since it sets up the back to front method you will use again and again. Block in three or four overlapping dark green pine triangles first, leaving gaps of white paper for the gaps between trunks, then add a pale blue-grey sky wash behind them before anything else goes down.

Paint the deer last, as one warm brown silhouette with a slightly darker patch for the shaded side of its body. Keep the legs thin and the head small, since a deer drawn too large will crowd the clearing and lose the quiet feeling you want.

Measure the deer against one pine tree before you commit to paint: it should stand no taller than about a third of the tree beside it. If the proportion feels off once it is dry, you can always paint a thin new tree trunk over part of the deer to push it further back into the scene.

Finish with a dry brush loaded with titanium white, dragged lightly across the base of the trees for scattered snow. Today’s tip: paint the deer’s shadow as a soft blue-grey oval underneath it before you add the final snow texture.

You Will Need

• 300gsm gouache paper
• round brush size 6
• flat brush for sky wash
• titanium white gouache
• kneaded eraser for pencil guides

Palette: Forest Green,Payne’s Grey,Raw Umber,Titanium White

Look at photos of real deer standing side-on, since the angle of the front legs (one slightly forward) is what makes the pose read as mid-step rather than frozen.

Move from the deer’s open clearing to a red cabin with smoke rising from its chimney, a subject that rewards simple geometry more than detail. Pencil in a basic rectangle and triangle roof first, keep it small against the page so the forest still dominates, then paint the surrounding pine shapes before you touch the cabin itself.

Paint the cabin in one flat coat of warm red, let it dry fully, then add a darker red strip along the base and under the roofline for shadow. A single window square in warm yellow gouache, painted last, does more work than any other detail in the whole piece.

Eye level matters here: keep your horizon line low, near the bottom third of the page, so the pines tower over the cabin and the sky and chimney smoke have room to breathe above. The smoke should drift from warm grey near the chimney to almost white as it fades into the sky, two brushstrokes rather than one.

If you do not have a true red, mix cadmium orange with a touch of alizarin crimson. Today’s tip: paint the window glowing before the smoke, so the warm light feels like the reason for the smoke rather than an afterthought.

You Will Need

• ruler or straight scrap of card for the roofline
• small flat brush for the cabin walls
• warm red and yellow gouache
• grey gouache for smoke

Palette: Cadmium Red,Naples Yellow,Pine Green,Payne’s Grey

Try adding a second, smaller window on the cabin’s side wall for a two-point light effect, which makes the cabin feel lived in rather than staged.

After a quiet cabin, bring in some movement with a girl walking a dog on a forest path that curves away between the trees. Paint the path first as a pale blue-white diagonal shape, narrower at the top of the page than the bottom, since that single change does most of the work in making it recede into the distance.

Build the pine trees in two or three overlapping tones of green along both sides of the path, then add the girl and dog last as simple silhouettes, her in a warm coat colour, the dog small and dark at her side. Keep both figures no more than a few centimetres tall so the forest still feels large around them.

The usual mistake is making the path too straight and too wide, which flattens the whole scene. A gentle curve, even a small one, instantly adds distance and a sense of a longer walk still ahead.

No red available for her coat? Mustard yellow or deep teal work just as well against the greens. Today’s tip: add one or two small footprints in blue-grey along the path behind her for a sense of where she has already walked.

You Will Need

• pencil for the path curve
• small round brush for figures
• warm coat colour gouache
• blue-white gouache for the path

Palette: Sap Green,Prussian Blue,Burnt Sienna,Titanium White

Try this same path from a slightly higher eye level looking down on it, which gives you room to add more trees receding into the distance on both sides.

Slow the pace right down with a fox sleeping under a fallen log, a cozy counterpoint to the walking figures before it. Paint the fallen log first as a long horizontal brown shape with a darker underside, resting it diagonally across the lower third of the page so there is room for snow-covered pines behind it.

Curl the fox into a simple comma shape tucked against the log, painting the body in warm orange first and adding the white chest and tail tip once that base layer is dry. A few short dry-brush strokes in burnt umber along the fox’s back suggest fur without drawing every strand.

Getting the curl wrong is the most common slip: if the fox looks stiff, soften the line between its back and tail with a slightly damp brush before the paint fully sets. That one blend turns a hard outline into a believable sleeping curve.

No burnt umber on hand? Mix a little black into burnt sienna for the same warm dark fur tone. Today’s tip: leave a thin rim of untouched white paper around the fox’s back to suggest a dusting of snow settling on its fur.

You Will Need

• fine round brush for fur strokes
• orange and burnt umber gouache
• damp brush for softening edges
• white gouache for snow rim

Palette: Burnt Orange,Burnt Umber,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White

Reference a photo of a curled-up fox or cat for the exact comma shape of the spine, since that single curve is what sells the whole pose as asleep rather than crouched.

Shift the light now to an owl on a branch at dusk, where the whole mood comes from a darkening sky rather than any one detail of the bird. Paint the sky first as a gradient, warm peach near the horizon fading up into deep blue-violet, blended while both colours are still wet on the page.

Once that is dry, add the branch as a simple dark diagonal shape, then paint the owl as a rounded silhouette perched on it, two small pale circles for the face disc left until last. Keep the owl’s body as one flat shape with only a hint of a darker wing line, since too much detail fights with the dusky sky behind it.

Think about where the light is coming from before you paint the owl’s face: if the dusk glow sits to the left, the right side of the owl’s face disc should carry a touch more shadow. That small shift gives the bird real form against a flat sky.

If blending wet sky colours feels tricky, paint them as separate dry bands instead and soften the seam with a dry brush. Today’s tip: add two tiny warm dots for the owl’s eyes last, once everything else is fully dry, so they stay sharp and bright.

You Will Need

• flat brush for the sky gradient
• round brush for the owl shape
• peach and violet gouache
• fine liner brush for eyes

Palette: Peach,Deep Violet,Payne’s Grey,Raw Sienna

Try painting this scene as a near-silhouette, with the whole forest and owl in one dark tone against the dusk sky, for a bolder, more graphic version.

Carry that dusk feeling forward into a hiker with a lantern making their way along a snowy trail. Paint the background forest first in flat, darkening blue-greens, since the whole trick of this scene is a dark forest with one small warm light source cutting through it.

Add the hiker as a simple cloaked silhouette, then paint the lantern last as a small warm yellow glow with a soft halo of lighter paint blended just around its edge while still wet. That halo is what convinces the eye the lantern is actually lit rather than just coloured in.

If the ten-minute version is a quick silhouette hiker against a flat dark forest, the forty-minute version adds a faint path of lantern light spilling onto the snow in front of their boots, painted in the same warm yellow at low opacity.

Struggling to get a soft glow with gouache? A barely damp brush loaded with white, stippled gently around the lantern, softens the edge nearly as well as true wet blending. Today’s tip: keep every other colour in the scene cool so the single warm lantern reads as the clear focal point.

You Will Need

• small lantern-sized round brush
• warm yellow gouache
• dark blue-green gouache for the forest
• damp brush for the glow

Palette: Prussian Blue,Deep Forest Green,Naples Yellow,Titanium White

Paint the same scene from a low angle, looking up at the hiker from the snow, to make the lantern light feel larger and the trees feel taller overhead.

Give yourself a breather after the figures with a wooden bench and a thermos left in the snow, a still life you can finish quickly. Paint the bench first in flat warm brown, a simple rectangle seat and two or three plank lines for the backrest, then add a light dusting of white gouache along every horizontal surface where snow would naturally settle.

Place the thermos beside it as a small red or orange cylinder with a dark lid, its cast shadow a cool blue-grey shape stretching away from it on the snow. That shadow is what grounds the thermos and stops it floating on the page.

This is a true ten-minute piece if you keep the background forest as a soft, loosely painted wash of green and blue. The forty-minute version adds individual pine trees behind the bench and a faint steam curl rising from the thermos’s open cap.

No red thermos colour in your set? Mustard or deep teal reads just as cozy against the snow. Today’s tip: paint the bench’s snow highlights with a dry brush for texture rather than a smooth white line, which can look painted-on rather than settled.

You Will Need

• small flat brush for the bench planks
• red or orange gouache for the thermos
• blue-grey gouache for shadows
• dry brush for snow texture

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cadmium Orange,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White

Try adding a single red mitten dropped in the snow beside the bench, a tiny story detail that costs one extra brushstroke.

Bring the scale right down with a rabbit nibbling a twig at the edge of the clearing, a small subject that is forgiving for a quieter painting session. Paint the rabbit’s body first as one soft oval in warm grey-brown, then add the ears, slightly apart and one tilted, before the twig it is nibbling on.

Measure the ears against the head before committing: each ear should be roughly the same length as the head itself, since shorter ears read as a different animal entirely and longer ones tip it into cartoon territory. Keep the twig a simple thin brown line held just in front of the rabbit’s face.

Once the body is dry, use a fine dry brush loaded with white to flick in a few short highlight strokes along the rabbit’s back and haunches, suggesting fur catching the light without painting every hair.

If grey-brown is not in your set, mix a touch of blue into burnt sienna for a cooler winter coat colour. Today’s tip: add the rabbit’s dark eye and pink-tinged ear interior last, as two tiny dots and a thin line, once the fur layer is fully dry.

You Will Need

• fine round brush for details
• grey-brown gouache mix
• dry brush for fur highlights
• thin brush for the twig

Palette: Grey Brown,Burnt Sienna,Titanium White,Sap Green

Look at reference photos of rabbits in snow for how their fur fluffs out around the edges in cold weather, wider and softer than a summer coat.

Warm things up again with a forest sauna wrapped in steam, tucked among the pines. Paint the sauna cabin first as a simple dark log structure, horizontal plank lines kept loose rather than ruled, with one small glowing window to suggest the heat inside.

The steam is the real subject here, so give it the most attention: paint it in soft, layered strokes of white and pale blue-grey, thicker and more opaque near the chimney or vent and thinning out as it rises and disperses into the cold air above the trees.

Eye level is worth thinking through before you paint the cabin walls: a slightly low angle, looking up at the sauna from the snow, makes the steam feel like it is billowing up and away from you rather than sitting flat on the page.

No pale blue-grey for the steam shadow? A touch of Payne’s grey into white gives the same cool cloud tone. Today’s tip: leave the steam’s edges soft and uneven rather than a clean cloud shape, since real steam never has a tidy outline.

You Will Need

• flat brush for the log cabin
• white and pale blue-grey gouache
• fine brush for the glowing window
• dry brush for steam edges

Palette: Deep Umber,Pale Blue Grey,Titanium White,Naples Yellow

Try warming the steam near the window with a faint hint of yellow mixed into the white, since steam close to a light source often picks up a trace of its glow.

Bring some colour and small life into the scene with a tree holding a bird feeder visited by two or three blue tits. Paint the tree trunk and a few bare branches first in flat brown, leaving the branch ends thin so the small birds have room to perch believably.

Paint the feeder as a simple box shape hanging from one branch, then add the birds last, each one no bigger than a thumbnail: a round blue-grey body, a paler belly, and one tiny dash of yellow on the chest. Keep every bird a slightly different pose, one feeding, one looking outward, so the group feels alive rather than copied three times.

If you have painted this piece once already and want to change it up, try swapping the blue tits for robins or chickadees next time, or move the feeder to a lower branch closer to eye level for a more intimate view.

No pale blue for the birds? A mix of white and Prussian blue gets you close. Today’s tip: paint a few seeds scattered on the snow beneath the feeder, a small detail that explains exactly why the birds have gathered there.

You Will Need

• fine round brush for the birds
• blue-grey and yellow gouache
• brown gouache for the tree
• tiny brush for seed details

Palette: Pale Blue Grey,Lemon Yellow,Burnt Umber,Titanium White

Reference real blue tit photos for the sharp contrast between their blue cap and yellow chest, which reads clearly even painted very small.

Add a sense of motion and company with a couple skiing between slender white birch trunks. Paint the birches first, since they set the whole mood: tall thin vertical shapes in near-white with a few short dark horizontal marks for the characteristic bark texture, spaced unevenly across the page rather than in a neat row.

Paint the two skiers as simple leaning silhouettes, poles angled behind them to suggest forward motion, their coats in two different warm colours so they read as two distinct people rather than one doubled shape. Keep their legs and skis as thin single strokes rather than detailed outlines.

Getting the sense of speed right is mostly about the angle of the body: lean the figures forward from the hips rather than painting them upright, and angle both ski poles backward at the same angle as if caught mid-stride.

If pure white birch bark looks flat against white paper, add the faintest cool blue-grey shadow down one side of each trunk. Today’s tip: paint the background forest behind the birches slightly blurred and darker, which pushes the white trunks and the skiers forward in the scene, much as the woodland scenes in this winter painting ideas collection do with their own light and shadow.

You Will Need

• fine brush for birch bark marks
• two warm coat colours
• round brush for the figures
• blue-grey gouache for trunk shadow

Palette: Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Red,Mustard Yellow

Try this same scene with just one skier gliding alone for a quieter, more solitary version of the same composition.

Return to the idea of lantern light, this time spread along a whole forest path lit by a row of small lanterns. Paint the path and surrounding dark trees first in flat, fairly uniform dark blue-green, since a consistently dark base is what makes each lantern glow look dramatic later.

Space three or four small lantern shapes along the path, closer together near the front of the page and smaller and closer together as the path recedes, which also helps the perspective read correctly. Paint each lantern’s glow with a soft halo of warm yellow blended into the surrounding dark while still slightly wet.

If this becomes a favourite composition, the easiest way to vary it next time is to change the season of light: try it at a snowier, bluer dusk, or push the lanterns to candle-orange for a warmer, almost golden version of the same path.

No real halo effect from wet blending? Dab a little white into the yellow glow and soften with a clean damp brush instead. Today’s tip: keep the lanterns at slightly different heights along the path, since perfectly even spacing looks posed rather than natural.

You Will Need

• dark blue-green gouache for the base
• warm yellow gouache for the lanterns
• small round brush for each lantern
• damp brush for the glow

Palette: Deep Teal,Prussian Blue,Naples Yellow,Titanium White

Add a thin curl of warm light reflected on the snow beneath each lantern for a stronger sense of real light hitting the ground.

Scale back up to a large, quiet subject with a moose standing in a misty forest. Paint the mist first as a soft, pale grey-blue wash across the whole background, graduating lighter toward where the moose will stand, since mist behind the subject is what gives this piece its hushed, distant feeling.

Once that is dry, paint the moose as one large dark silhouette, broad shoulders and a long face, with the antlers added last in a few confident thin strokes rather than a fussy branching shape. Keep the moose’s legs slightly lost in the mist near the ground rather than fully defined, which reinforces the misty atmosphere.

Measuring the antlers against the head helps enormously here: each antler should extend roughly one head-width out from the skull, since moose antlers drawn too small make the animal look like a deer and too large tips into caricature.

No grey-blue for mist? Thin down Payne’s grey heavily with water for the same soft effect. Today’s tip: leave the trees behind the moose barely visible, just a shade darker than the mist itself, so the moose remains the clear focal point of the whole scene.

You Will Need

• large flat brush for the mist wash
• dark brown or near-black gouache
• fine brush for the antlers
• water for thinning the mist colour

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Deep Umber,Titanium White,Sap Green

Look at reference photos of moose from the side, since the long drop of the face and the hump at the shoulder are what make the silhouette unmistakably a moose rather than a deer.

Bring the scene in close again with a small tent glowing from a lantern inside it, pitched among snowy trees. Paint the tent first as a simple triangular shape, keeping one side a touch darker than the other to suggest it catching the ambient light of the forest around it.

The real subject is the warm glow coming through the fabric, so paint that next: a soft yellow-orange shape bleeding gently into the tent’s outline where the lantern light shines through from inside, strongest near the centre and fading toward the tent’s edges.

The ten-minute version is just the tent and its glow against a simple dark forest backdrop. The forty-minute version adds a thin trail of footprints leading up to the tent flap and a faint plume of breath-like mist near where the entrance would be, suggesting someone just stepped inside.

If blending the glow into the tent fabric looks patchy, work while the base tent colour is still slightly damp so the warm glow melts into it. Today’s tip: keep every tree around the tent a cool, flat dark tone, so the one warm glowing shape has nothing to compete with.

You Will Need

• small flat brush for the tent shape
• warm orange-yellow gouache
• dark cool green for surrounding trees
• fine brush for footprints

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Orange,Deep Forest Green,Titanium White

Try this scene from further back, with the tent small among towering trees, to emphasise just how deep into the forest the camper has gone.

Pick the energy back up with a squirrel leaping mid-air between two snowy branches. Paint the two branches first, one upper left and one lower right, leaving a clear gap of open space between them where the squirrel will sit, since that negative space is what sells the leap.

Paint the squirrel’s body stretched long and low, front paws reaching forward and back legs trailing behind, its tail curved up behind it in one bold brushstroke rather than a stiff straight line. A reaching, elongated pose reads as mid-air far more convincingly than a round, curled-up body would.

The curved tail is also your best tool for suggesting motion: exaggerate its curve slightly beyond what looks anatomically exact, since a touch of visual drama here reads as speed and lightness rather than inaccuracy.

If warm orange-brown is not quite right for a grey squirrel, swap in a cool charcoal-brown mix instead. Today’s tip: dry brush a light scatter of falling snow flecks around the squirrel’s path to reinforce the sense of movement disturbing the branch above.

You Will Need

• round brush for the squirrel body
• orange-brown or grey-brown gouache
• fine brush for the tail curve
• dry brush for falling snow flecks

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Charcoal Grey,Titanium White,Sap Green

Watch a short video of a squirrel jumping if you can, since the exact stretch of the spine at the peak of the leap is hard to invent from imagination alone.

Slow the pace again with a child making a snow angel beneath a ring of tall pines. Paint the pines first, arranged loosely around the top and sides of the page so they frame the open snowy space in the centre where the child will lie.

Paint the child as a simple shape lying on their back, arms spread in two curved strokes and legs spread similarly below, their coat in one bright warm colour that stands out clearly against all the white and green around them. The snow angel’s wing and skirt marks, two curved sweeps either side of the body, are best added last in a very pale blue-grey so they read as pressed snow rather than solid shapes.

Keeping the child small within a large clearing is the detail that makes this composition work: if the figure fills too much of the page, the sense of wide open snow disappears.

No bright warm coat colour handy? A cheerful teal or purple against the white snow works just as well. Today’s tip: add a small knitted hat in a contrasting colour as the very last mark, a tiny detail that brings real warmth and personality to the whole scene.

You Will Need

• round brush for the figure
• bright warm coat colour gouache
• pale blue-grey for the angel wings
• fine brush for the hat detail

Palette: Cadmium Red,Pale Blue Grey,Sap Green,Titanium White

Try a bird’s eye view looking straight down at the child in the snow angel shape, a composition that makes the angel wings the clear star of the piece.

Bring some quiet comedy in with a woodpile topped by a napping cat. Paint the woodpile first as a stack of short overlapping brown logs, each one a simple rounded rectangle with a slightly darker end circle, built up in a few uneven rows so it reads as a real stack rather than a perfect grid.

Paint the cat curled on top in one warm or grey tone, tail wrapped around its body, ears the only sharp points in an otherwise soft, rounded shape. Keep the cat noticeably smaller than the woodpile itself, since scale is what makes the perch feel precarious and charming rather than awkward.

If the cat’s curl looks stiff once painted, soften the outline where its tail meets its body with a slightly damp brush, exactly as you would for a sleeping fox, to turn hard edges into a relaxed curve.

No orange or grey for the cat? Any warm neutral mixed from burnt sienna and white works. Today’s tip: add a thin dusting of snow along the top edge of each log with a dry brush, so the whole woodpile looks genuinely left outside through a snowy spell.

You Will Need

• round brush for log shapes
• warm brown gouache for wood
• grey or orange gouache for the cat
• dry brush for snow dusting

Palette: Burnt Umber,Burnt Sienna,Charcoal Grey,Titanium White

Try swapping the cat for a chicken or a small owl on the same woodpile next time, since the stacked logs make a reusable base for all kinds of perched creatures.

Shift the scene to water with a heron standing beside a frozen stream threading through the trees. Paint the stream first as a pale blue-white ribbon winding between dark banks, narrower where it curves into the distance, which again is the simplest trick for suggesting depth in a flat winter scene.

Paint the heron standing at the water’s edge as a tall, narrow silhouette, one leg visible and one tucked, neck curved into a gentle S shape rather than a straight line. Keep the beak thin and precise, since it is the one small detail that instantly identifies the bird.

Measure the heron’s neck and legs against its body before finishing: both should look notably longer than the body itself, since a heron painted with short proportions reads as a generic bird rather than a heron specifically.

No pale blue for frozen water? A thin wash of Payne’s grey over white paper gives a similarly icy look. Today’s tip: leave a few patches of the stream unpainted white paper rather than blue, to suggest ice catching the light unevenly.

You Will Need

• fine brush for the heron’s neck and beak
• pale blue-grey gouache for the stream
• dark grey for the heron’s body
• round brush for the stream banks

Palette: Pale Ice Blue,Payne’s Grey,Deep Umber,Titanium White

Reference photos of herons standing still for the exact angle of the neck curve, which varies a surprising amount and gives each painting real character.

Return to warmth with a forest cabin beside a steaming hot tub tucked into the snow. Paint the cabin first, much as you did earlier, as a simple warm-toned structure with one glowing window, then add the hot tub as a round or oval shape in front of it, its rim painted in a warm wood tone to match the cabin.

The steam rising from the tub is the heart of this piece, so give it the same care as the sauna steam: layered soft white and pale blue-grey strokes, thicker near the water’s surface and thinning as they drift upward into the cold air.

Working from a slightly elevated eye level, looking down into the tub a little, helps the water read clearly as a round pool rather than a flat circle, and gives you room to add a hint of warm reflected light on its surface.

No round object to trace for the tub shape? A mug or small bowl works just as well as a stencil. Today’s tip: add one or two warm reflected highlights on the snow near the tub, since real steam and lamp light always spill a little colour onto the ground around them, a trick worth carrying into other cozy scenes like those in this winter junk journal collection.

You Will Need

• round object to trace the tub shape
• warm wood-tone gouache
• white and blue-grey for steam
• fine brush for reflected highlights

Palette: Warm Umber,Pale Blue Grey,Naples Yellow,Titanium White

Try a night version of this scene with string lights wrapped around the cabin porch, which gives you several small warm highlights to scatter through the steam.

Ease into a simpler still-life moment with a red sled left leaning against a tree trunk. Paint the tree trunk first as a tall, slightly textured brown vertical shape, then rest the sled against its base, its curved runners painted in two confident sweeping strokes rather than built up from straight lines.

Paint the sled’s body in flat cadmium red, adding a darker red shadow along its underside once the base coat is dry, and a thin rope detail in brown trailing off into the snow beside it. Keep the whole sled small against the tree, since an oversized sled will unbalance what should be a quiet, overlooked corner of the forest.

This is an easy ten-minute piece with just the sled, tree, and a soft green backdrop. For the forty-minute version, add a scatter of small sled tracks curving away through the snow, suggesting where it has recently been pulled from.

No cadmium red available? Any warm orange-red mix will do the job just as well. Today’s tip: paint a light dusting of snow settled in the sled’s seat, a small sign of how long it has sat there unused.

You Will Need

• round brush for the sled curves
• cadmium red gouache
• brown gouache for the rope and tree
• dry brush for snow dusting

Palette: Cadmium Red,Burnt Umber,Sap Green,Titanium White

Try leaning two sleds together instead of one for a quick variation that suggests more than one person has been out playing in the snow.

Bring a figure back into the frame with a girl in a red coat gathering pine cones from the forest floor. Paint the background pines and snowy ground first in a loose, simple wash, then add the girl bending slightly forward, one arm reaching down, her coat the single warmest, brightest shape in the whole scene.

Scatter a few pine cones on the snow near her hand in flat brown ovals with a hint of darker shading on one side, keeping them small enough that they clearly sit on the ground rather than floating. Her basket or gathered bundle, painted as a simple woven shape at her side, finishes the story without needing any further detail.

Getting her bending pose right comes down to a simple comparison: her shoulders should tilt noticeably lower than her hips if she is reaching toward the ground, a small but important shift that straight-backed figures often miss entirely.

If cadmium red feels too bright for your palette, a deep burgundy coat works beautifully against snow and green. Today’s tip: add one pine cone already tucked into her coat pocket, a tiny detail that tells the viewer this is not her first one found today.

You Will Need

• round brush for the figure
• cadmium red or burgundy gouache
• brown gouache for pine cones
• fine brush for the basket detail

Palette: Cadmium Red,Burnt Umber,Sap Green,Titanium White

Look at reference photos of people bending to pick something up, since the angle of the back and bent knee is easy to get subtly wrong without a real pose to check against.

Scale the subject back up with a horse standing calmly in a snowy forest clearing. Paint the clearing and surrounding tree line first in flat, simple shapes, leaving a generous open space in the middle where the horse’s full body will sit clearly against the snow.

Paint the horse as one large, confident silhouette, the classic arched neck and straight back built from two or three smooth curved strokes rather than many small ones. Keep the legs slightly thinner than feels natural at first, since horse legs are more slender than most beginners expect and thick legs read as a pony or a toy rather than a real horse.

Compare the head size against the body before adding final details: the head should measure roughly a quarter of the horse’s total body length, a ratio that keeps the proportions convincing even in a simplified flat-shape style.

No large brush for the big body shape? A smaller round brush used in confident overlapping strokes gets the same clean silhouette. Today’s tip: add one simple braided or tied mane detail in a contrasting colour if you want a hint of a cared-for, perhaps farm-owned horse rather than a wild one.

You Will Need

• medium to large round brush
• dark brown or black gouache for the horse
• fine brush for mane detail
• sap green for the tree line

Palette: Deep Umber,Charcoal Grey,Sap Green,Titanium White

Reference photos of horses standing calmly rather than running, since a relaxed stance with weight evenly on all four legs suits this quiet winter scene far better than a dynamic pose.

Bring in a small group scene with a family cutting their own tree from among the pines. Paint the chosen tree first, slightly smaller and more conical than the pines around it so it reads clearly as the one being cut, then block in two or three simple figures nearby, kept small and loosely detailed so the focus stays on the moment rather than individual faces.

One figure can be bent toward the tree’s base with a small dark saw shape, another standing back watching, giving the group a believable sense of shared activity. Keep all the coats in different warm colours so each figure reads as a separate person at a glance.

The quick ten-minute version keeps the figures as flat colour silhouettes with no detail beyond their coats. The forty-minute version adds a small sled nearby ready to carry the tree home, and a light scatter of disturbed snow around the tree’s base where they have been working.

If three figures feels like too much to manage at once, reduce it to two, a parent and child, without losing the story. Today’s tip: tilt the chosen tree ever so slightly, as if already partway through being cut, for a touch of real narrative tension.

You Will Need

• round brush for the figures
• several warm coat colours
• fine brush for the saw detail
• sap green for the trees

Palette: Sap Green,Cadmium Red,Mustard Yellow,Titanium White

Try this scene from further back with the whole family small against a large forest, which turns the focus from the figures themselves to the scale and quiet of the woods around them.

Shift the mood to something a little wilder with a wolf howling at a pale moon above the treeline. Paint the night sky first, a deep blue-violet wash with the moon left as untouched white paper or a very pale circle, since that contrast is what makes the moon glow without any extra blending.

Paint the wolf as a single dark silhouette standing on a rise of snow, head tilted back and mouth slightly open, its outline kept smooth and confident rather than fussy. Keep the pine trees around it simple and dark so nothing competes with the wolf’s shape against the pale sky.

Where the light sits matters enormously here: since the moon is the only light source, every edge of the wolf facing the moon should carry a thin rim of lighter tone, while the rest of the body stays in deep shadow. That rim light alone makes the whole scene feel genuinely lit by moonlight rather than just dark.

No pure white for the moon glow? A very pale cool yellow works just as well, and a touch warmer besides. Today’s tip: add a few faint stars as tiny white dots scattered unevenly across the upper sky, avoiding anything close to the moon itself where its glow would wash them out.

You Will Need

• large flat brush for the night sky
• white or pale yellow gouache for the moon
• dark grey for the wolf silhouette
• fine brush for star dots

Palette: Deep Violet,Payne’s Grey,Pale Moon Yellow,Titanium White

Try angling the wolf in three-quarter view rather than full profile for a more dramatic pose that shows a hint of its chest and front legs.

Settle back into stillness with a tiny chapel tucked among tall pines, its small spire just visible above the snow. Paint the surrounding pines first, taller than the chapel itself, so the little building feels nestled and protected rather than exposed. Keep the chapel’s shape simple: a narrow rectangle body, a steep triangular roof, and one small pointed spire.

Paint the chapel in a muted stone or soft grey tone rather than anything bright, since a quiet colour here lets the surrounding forest stay the main subject. A single small warm window, painted last in soft yellow, gives just enough life to suggest someone lit a candle inside.

If the spire looks too thick once painted, a few strokes of the background sky colour painted carefully along its edges can narrow it down without a full repaint. That trick works for correcting almost any shape that ends up heavier than intended.

No soft grey stone colour mixed? A touch of blue into white and burnt umber gets you there quickly. Today’s tip: add a faint path of footprints leading up to the chapel door, a small detail that suggests someone recently arrived for a quiet moment inside.

You Will Need

• fine brush for the spire and window
• soft grey or stone gouache
• sap green for the surrounding pines
• thin brush for the footprint path

Palette: Soft Stone Grey,Naples Yellow,Deep Forest Green,Titanium White

Try adding a small bell shape in the spire’s opening for a tiny extra detail that rewards a closer look without complicating the overall composition.

Bring a festive sparkle in with a stretch of forest where fairy lights wind up several tree trunks. Paint the trunks first in flat dark brown, then the surrounding pines and snow in your usual cool palette, keeping everything reasonably dark and muted so the lights have real contrast to shine against later.

Once that base layer is completely dry, add the fairy lights as a loose spiralling line of small warm dots climbing each trunk, varying the spacing slightly so it reads as a real wrapped string rather than a perfectly even pattern. A tiny lighter halo dabbed around each dot while the paint is still workable gives a convincing glow.

The most common mistake is making every light the exact same size and brightness, which flattens the effect instantly. Vary a few dots larger and brighter than the rest, as real fairy lights never glow with perfectly identical intensity.

No fine enough brush for tiny dots? The end of a cotton swab or the back of a paintbrush dipped in paint makes neat small dots too. Today’s tip: let a few light dots trail off the ends of bare branches rather than keeping them strictly on the trunks, for a looser, more magical feel, in the same spirit as the glowing scenes found in this gouache painting ideas collection.

You Will Need

• fine brush or cotton swab for light dots
• warm yellow gouache
• dark brown gouache for trunks
• sap green and payne’s grey for the forest

Palette: Burnt Umber,Naples Yellow,Deep Forest Green,Titanium White

Try a cooler light colour, pale blue instead of warm yellow, for a frostier, more wintry sparkle rather than a cozy holiday feel.

Lighten the mood with a fox cub mid-pounce, playing alone in a patch of fresh snow. Paint the cub smaller and rounder than the sleeping adult fox painted earlier, its proportions chunkier and its head larger relative to its body, which instantly reads as a young animal rather than a grown one.

Give it a playful pounce pose, front paws reaching forward and back legs pushed up behind, tail flicked out to one side rather than curled calmly. Paint the surrounding snow with energetic dry brush marks flicked outward from around its paws, suggesting snow kicked up mid-play.

Comparing head to body size is the key trick for any young animal: a cub’s head should look proportionally larger than an adult’s, closer to a third of its total body length rather than a quarter. Get that one ratio right and the youthful energy follows naturally.

No confident dry brush flicks on the first try? Practice the motion on scrap paper first, since the angle and speed of the flick matters more than the paint itself. Today’s tip: add one small shadow beneath the cub’s raised front paws to anchor the pounce firmly in the snow.

You Will Need

• round brush for the cub body
• orange and white gouache
• dry brush for kicked-up snow marks
• scrap paper for practice flicks

Palette: Burnt Orange,Titanium White,Payne’s Grey,Sap Green

Reference videos of fox kits or puppies playing for the exact springy, off-balance energy of a young animal’s pounce, which differs noticeably from an adult’s more controlled movement.

Return to a quiet still life with a small picnic of cocoa mugs set out on a fallen log. Paint the log first, the same warm brown you have used elsewhere in this series, then add two simple mugs on top, each one a small rounded cylinder with a thin handle loop and a warm brown cocoa surface at the rim.

A soft curl of steam rising from each mug, painted in the same layered white and pale grey technique used for the sauna and hot tub scenes, ties this piece visually to the rest of the series while standing on its own as a cozy little moment. Keep the mugs close together, almost touching, to suggest they belong to two people sharing this spot.

If the steam looks too solid or cloud-like, thin your white paint further with water and apply it in fewer, lighter passes rather than one heavy layer.

No two matching mug shapes needed; in fact, slightly different mugs read as more natural and homely. Today’s tip: tuck a single marshmallow-pink dot into one mug’s rim, a tiny detail that instantly reads as hot cocoa rather than plain coffee or tea.

You Will Need

• small round brush for the mugs
• brown gouache for cocoa and log
• white and pale grey for steam
• fine brush for the marshmallow detail

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Pale Blue Grey,Titanium White,Soft Pink

Try adding a thermos lying open beside the mugs for a second small prop that extends the story without adding much extra painting time.

Bring the focus small again with a robin perched on a weathered fence rail deep in the woods. Paint the fence first as two or three simple horizontal wooden rails with a light dusting of snow along each top edge, keeping the wood tone fairly muted so the bird stands out clearly once it is added.

Paint the robin as a round, puffed-up shape, since cold weather birds fluff their feathers for warmth, with its signature warm orange-red chest painted as one confident flat shape rather than blended gradually into the grey-brown body above it.

The eye is the detail most likely to go wrong: keep it as a single small dark dot placed slightly forward on the head rather than centred, which gives the bird a more alert, lifelike expression than a dead-centre eye ever will.

No orange-red exactly right in your set? Mix a touch of yellow into cadmium red for a warmer, slightly softer robin chest colour. Today’s tip: puff the robin’s silhouette rounder than feels natural at first, since a slimmer bird shape reads as a different species entirely in cold weather scenes.

You Will Need

• small round brush for the robin
• orange-red gouache for the chest
• grey-brown gouache for the body
• fine brush for the eye and fence snow

Palette: Burnt Orange,Grey Brown,Burnt Umber,Titanium White

Reference winter robin photos for how round and puffed their silhouette becomes in the cold, quite different from the slimmer shape they have in warmer months.

Open up the scene with a reindeer standing at the edge of a frozen lake surrounded by forest. Paint the lake first as a wide pale blue-white shape stretching across the lower half of the page, its far edge meeting a tree-lined shore, since establishing that flat expanse early gives you a clear stage for the reindeer.

Paint the reindeer standing near the water’s edge as a sturdy brown silhouette, antlers branching upward in a few confident strokes, noticeably broader and more spread than a deer’s antlers to keep the species clearly distinct from the earlier deer painting in this series.

Measure the reindeer’s body against the lake’s width before finishing: keeping the animal relatively small against the wide frozen expanse emphasises the scale and quiet of the setting far better than a reindeer that fills most of the page.

No large flat brush for the lake’s open expanse? A smaller brush working in smooth horizontal strokes achieves the same flat, even surface with a little more patience. Today’s tip: add a thin reflection of the reindeer’s legs on the ice surface, a small detail that makes the frozen lake read as genuinely reflective.

You Will Need

• flat brush for the lake surface
• brown gouache for the reindeer
• fine brush for the antlers
• pale blue-white gouache for the ice

Palette: Pale Ice Blue,Burnt Umber,Payne’s Grey,Titanium White

Try this same reindeer scene at dawn instead, with a soft pink and gold sky reflected faintly on the ice, for a warmer variation on the same composition.

Close the series with a small wooden bridge arching over a narrow forest creek. Paint the creek first as a thin winding blue-white shape running diagonally across the lower part of the page, then add the bridge spanning it in a simple arched shape, built from two curved rail lines and a few short vertical post marks.

Build the surrounding pines in your usual overlapping flat shapes, letting a few branches dust with snow lean gently over the bridge’s rails for a touch of connection between the structure and the forest around it. Keep the bridge itself in a muted wood tone rather than anything bright, so it settles naturally into the scene instead of jumping forward.

Measuring the bridge against the width of the creek helps enormously: the arch should comfortably span the water with a little room either side resting on the bank, since a bridge drawn too short or too long immediately looks structurally wrong even in a simple flat style.

No reference for how a simple arched bridge curves? Trace around a wide bowl or plate for the top rail curve, then repeat slightly smaller below it. Today’s tip: leave a few gaps of bare paper in the water beneath the bridge for light catching the moving creek, as a final finishing touch to this whole collection worth trying alongside the forest paths found throughout the earlier winter oil painting ideas.

You Will Need

• wide bowl or plate to trace the arch
• muted brown gouache for the bridge
• blue-white gouache for the creek
• sap green for surrounding pines

Palette: Burnt Umber,Pale Ice Blue,Deep Forest Green,Titanium White

Try adding a single bird perched on the bridge rail for a small final detail that gives the eye one last place to rest in the composition.

What to Do Next

Pick one scene that catches your eye tonight, whether it is the quiet deer stepping between the pines or the small chapel tucked among them, and start with the darkest shapes first on a heavyweight sheet of paper. The rest of this list will still be here waiting the next time you want another cozy corner of the forest to paint.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paper works best for a winter forest painting in gouache?

A heavyweight paper of at least 300gsm works best, since gouache is applied in several layers and thinner paper will buckle or pill. Cold press watercolor paper or a dedicated gouache pad both hold up well to repeated washes and dry brush snow texture.

How do you paint realistic snow texture with gouache?

Load a brush with thick, barely diluted white gouache, wipe off most of the paint on scrap paper, then drag it lightly across dry trees or ground. This dry brush method leaves broken, uneven marks that read as snow far better than a smooth wash.

What colours make a good winter forest palette?

Deep greens like sap green or forest green, cool blues such as Payne’s grey or Prussian blue, and one or two warm colours like Naples yellow or cadmium red for light sources make a balanced winter forest palette. The contrast between cool shadow and warm glow carries most of the mood.

How do I stop my forest trees from looking flat?

Vary the size and tone of overlapping pine shapes rather than painting every tree the same green and height. Darker, larger trees toward the front and smaller, paler ones further back create instant depth without any extra detail.

Can I paint these winter forest scenes without gouache?

Yes, acrylic paint works as a close substitute since it also dries to an opaque, flat finish and can be layered the same way. Watercolor can work too if you build up fewer, more transparent layers and add white gel pen for the final snow highlights.
