27 Posca Art Doodle Ideas for Bold Little Drawings on Light Paper

46

A posca art doodle is pure instant gratification: thick, opaque paint marker, a clean outline, flat color filled in fast, and a finished little picture before you even reach for a second page. There is no waiting for paint to dry, no blending to get right, just bold shapes that read clearly even from across the room. That is exactly why this style has taken over so many sketchbooks and why it photographs so well for Pinterest boards.

Below you will find 27 small subjects built for this exact method, arranged from the simplest shapes up to the ones with a bit more going on. Grab a few Posca markers in your favorite colors, a black one for outlines, and plain paper, then pick whichever doodle makes you smile first.

Start the whole page with something cheerful: a smiling sun with thick, chunky rays instead of thin lines. Draw a circle freehand with a pencil first if your hand is not steady yet, then go over it with the black Posca marker, leaving the inside empty for now.

Add short, fat triangle rays around the circle, spacing them evenly by eye rather than measuring, since a little unevenness only adds charm here. Fill the circle with a warm yellow Posca, then once dry, add two dot eyes and a curved smile in black, with small pink circles on the cheeks for extra warmth.

Where this goes wrong is rays that are too thin and spindly, which weakens the bold look this style depends on. Keep every ray as wide as two finger-widths at the base so it reads as solid and graphic rather than scratchy.

If you only have one yellow marker, that is all this needs, so do not worry about building a full palette yet.

Move from the sun to something smaller and sweeter: a pair of cherries joined at the stem, each with a little white shine dot. Pencil two overlapping circles first to get the size right, then trace them in black Posca along with two curved stems meeting at a point above.

Fill both cherries with a rich red, letting the marker overlap the black line slightly rather than leaving white gaps near the edge. While the paint is still workable, press in one small white dot near the top of each cherry for the classic glossy shine, or add it last with a white gel pen if your marker nib is too wide for fine dots.

The easy mistake here is making the two cherries identical in size, which flattens the drawing. Make one cherry slightly larger and tilt it a touch, since real cherry pairs are never perfectly symmetrical and the asymmetry makes the shape feel more alive.

A green stem and leaf tucked between them finishes it off nicely if you want one extra detail.

You Will Need

• white gel pen for the shine dots

Palette: Cherry Red,Leaf Green,White,Black

Keep the momentum going with a classic storybook mushroom, cap on top, short stem below. Outline a rounded dome shape in black first, then a slightly flared stem underneath it, the way the cap always sits a little wider than the stalk.

Fill the cap in red or orange and the stem in a soft off-white or cream, finishing both with the black outline you already laid down. Once the cap color is dry, add a scatter of white dots across it using a Posca white marker or the tip of a cotton swab dipped in white paint, spacing them unevenly so it looks natural rather than patterned.

This is where eye level matters: draw the cap from slightly above, as if you are looking down on it a little, and the dome will read far more convincingly than a flat half-circle. That small shift in viewpoint is the difference between a mushroom that looks solid and one that looks pasted on.

Finish with one tip today: keep the stem shorter and wider than feels natural, since a thin stem makes the whole mushroom look fragile and off balance.

Palette: Poppy Red,Cream,White,Black

Melting candy hearts are everywhere in this style for good reason: they turn one simple shape into something with motion. Draw the classic heart outline in black, then instead of a clean bottom edge, let two or three drips trail downward from it, each one a thin curved line ending in a small rounded blob.

Fill the heart itself in a bold color first, working from the center outward so the paint does not pool near the black outline. Once that is dry, color the drips the same shade so they read as part of the heart rather than something separate.

The edges of those drips are the trickiest part: a dry marker tip dragged slowly gives a cleaner, more controlled drip than a fast stroke, which tends to splatter. If your Posca is running dry, that dry-brush drag actually helps here instead of hurting, giving the drip a slightly textured edge that looks intentional.

Try this one in a saturated pink or red for the boldest look.

Palette: Hot Pink,Black,White

From one drippy heart to a full arc of color: a rainbow with a soft cloud tucked at each end. Pencil in a wide arch first, then divide it into three or four bands rather than the full spectrum, since fewer, thicker bands suit this bold flat style better than a crowded rainbow.

Outline the whole arch and the two clouds in black, then fill each band in its own saturated color, working top to bottom so your hand does not smear wet paint from the row above. Leave the clouds plain white, outlined only in black, so they stay light against the busier rainbow.

For a quick ten-minute version, stop at three colors and two simple cloud bumps. Given forty minutes, add a second smaller rainbow peeking out behind the first, or scatter a few tiny stars around the clouds for a fuller page.

One tip for today: pick colors that sit next to each other in rainbow order even if you skip some, since random color order reads as messy rather than bold.

Palette: Red,Sunflower Yellow,Sky Blue,White

Give the page a bit of personality with a flower that has a smiling face right in the middle of it. Draw a circle for the center first, then build five or six rounded petals around it, slightly overlapping where they meet so the flower looks full rather than sparse.

Outline everything in black before adding color, filling the petals in one bright shade and the center in a contrasting one, like orange petals around a yellow face. Once the center is dry, add two dot eyes and a simple curved smile, the same way you would on the sun earlier in this list, so the two subjects feel like they belong to the same set.

If you have tried the kawaii sketchbook style before, this flower face will feel familiar, since the same cute expression trick carries over here.

Keep the smile small and centered rather than stretching it toward the edges of the face circle, since an oversized smile tends to look stretched rather than cheerful.

Palette: Tangerine Orange,Sunflower Yellow,Black,Leaf Green

Switch gears to something more graphic: a jagged lightning bolt with a scatter of small stars around it. Sketch the bolt as a zigzag of three or four angled segments, keeping the angles sharp rather than rounded, since softness here reads as a squiggle instead of a bolt.

Outline it in black, then fill it solid in a bright yellow or electric blue, and add two or three simple four-point stars nearby, outlined the same way and filled in a contrasting color. Space the stars unevenly around the bolt rather than lining them up, so the whole composition feels like a quick burst of energy rather than a tidy row.

The easiest mistake is making the bolt too thin, which loses the bold, flat impact this style is built on. Widen each segment until it looks almost chunky, then check that the black outline is still visible all the way around before you call it finished.

A single star is enough if you want the quicker version, three or four fills the page for a bolder result.

Palette: Electric Yellow,Purple,Black

Bring in a bit of still life with a round cactus sitting in a scalloped pink pot. Draw the pot first as a simple trapezoid with a scalloped or wavy top edge, then build the cactus above it as a rounded barrel shape with a few vertical ridge lines running down it.

Outline both in black, fill the pot in a soft pink and the cactus in a solid green, then add a couple of small white dashes along the ridges to suggest tiny spines without drawing each one individually. A thin band of a darker pink or a pattern of dots along the pot rim adds a nice finishing touch once the base color is dry.

Getting the proportion right matters here: the pot should take up no more than a third of the total height, otherwise the cactus starts to look squashed. Hold your pencil up against the sketch to compare the two heights before you commit to Posca.

Top it with one or two small pink flower dots for a sweeter version, or leave it plain for a cleaner look.

Palette: Cactus Green,Blush Pink,White,Black

Cat faces are a doodle staple for a reason, so draw one here with two pointed ears and long sweeping whiskers. Start with a rounded triangle shape for the head, add two pointed ears on top, then sketch in two closed, curved eyes and a small pink nose before outlining the whole thing in black.

Fill the face in a warm shade like orange or gray, keeping the inside of the ears a lighter color for contrast. Whiskers go on last, three thin lines fanning out from each cheek, drawn in one confident stroke rather than several short, hesitant ones, since a shaky whisker line looks more like a scratch than a hair.

If your Posca marker skips or the line comes out broken, go over it once more in the same direction rather than scrubbing back and forth, which thickens the line unevenly. Readers who enjoyed the animal faces in animal doodle painting ideas will find this cat an easy next step.

Add a tiny bow or collar at the chin if you want a bit more personality.

Palette: Tangerine Orange,White,Pink,Black

Here is a pure graphic shape with no face attached: a bold lips print, like a kiss mark blown up large. Draw the top lip as two soft bumps meeting in the middle, and the bottom lip as one wide curve beneath it, keeping both halves roughly the same width so the print looks balanced.

Outline in black, then fill the whole shape in one confident red or deep pink, leaving a thin black line down the center where the lips meet. A small white highlight near the top left of the shape, left unpainted or added with a white marker, gives the print a glossy look without any real shading.

If you want to vary this one next time, try it in an unexpected color like teal or purple instead of the obvious red, since the flat Posca style makes even odd lip colors look intentional and fun rather than strange.

Keep the two halves slightly uneven in size rather than perfectly symmetrical, since real lips never match exactly and the slight asymmetry makes the shape feel more natural.

Palette: Deep Red,White,Black

Pair the lips with another graphic favorite: a single stylized eye with long curled lashes. Draw an almond shape first, then a circle inside it for the iris, leaving a small white gap for the pupil highlight before you outline everything in black.

Fill the iris in a bold color like blue or green, keep the white of the eye plain, and add three or four thick curved lashes fanning out from the top corner, each one tapering to a point the way a real lash curls upward. A short straight line beneath the eye and a small dot for a tear duct finish the structure.

Light matters even in a flat style like this: decide where an imaginary light source sits, then leave that spot on the iris unpainted as a small white highlight dot, since that single untouched spot is what makes a flat circle read as a glossy eye.

Keep the lashes thick rather than hair-thin, since thin lashes tend to disappear once the marker ink dries.

Palette: Sky Blue,White,Black

Carry the fruit theme forward from the cherries with a plump strawberry, seeds and leafy top included. Draw a rounded heart-like shape tapering to a point at the bottom, then a scalloped leaf cluster at the top where the stem would be, and outline both in black.

Fill the body in red and the leaves in green, then once the red is dry, dot in small yellow seeds scattered across the surface, angling them slightly to follow the curve of the strawberry rather than lining them up in neat rows. A thin white curved highlight down one side adds a glossy touch without any real blending.

Seeds are the part most likely to go wrong, since too many make the strawberry look spotty rather than textured. Stop once you have a loose, scattered handful, roughly a dozen, and resist the urge to fill every bit of red surface.

If yellow feels too stark against the red, a cream or pale orange works just as well for the seeds.

Palette: Strawberry Red,Leaf Green,Pale Yellow,White

Take the heart shape from earlier and give it a completely different finish: a bold checkerboard pattern instead of a solid fill. Draw the heart outline in black as before, then lightly pencil a grid of evenly sized squares across the inside before picking up any color.

Fill alternating squares in black and your chosen color, working row by row so you do not lose track of the pattern, and touch up the grid lines in black once the squares are dry to keep every edge crisp. Any uneven square sizes will stand out immediately in a checkerboard, so a faint pencil grid underneath is worth the extra minute.

For a faster version, use a looser three-by-three grid of larger squares; for the fuller forty-minute version, tighten the grid to five or six squares across for a busier, more detailed pattern.

Red and black is the classic combination here, but a checkerboard in two pastel shades looks just as bold in this flat marker style.

Palette: Black,Cherry Red,White

Give yourself a break from solid shapes with a cluster of three sparkles in different sizes, the kind of four-point star shape that reads instantly as shine. Draw each sparkle as two long triangles crossing at the center, one large, one medium, one small, arranged in a loose diagonal line.

Outline each in black, then fill the largest in one bold color and the two smaller ones in a lighter shade of the same color family, so the trio feels connected rather than random. Leave a thin white line down the center of each sparkle unpainted to keep that classic glinting look.

This one is quick: in ten minutes you can have all three sparkles filled and outlined, done. Given more time, scatter five or six smaller sparkles loosely around the trio for a fuller, more festive cluster, the kind that works well tucked onto a page alongside a bff drawing ideas project.

Keep the points sharp rather than rounded, since a soft point turns a sparkle into something closer to a flower petal.

Palette: Hot Pink,Pale Pink,White,Black

Move into a quiet night sky moment with a crescent moon and one star tucked beside it. Draw the moon as a thick crescent, the kind you get by overlapping two circles and erasing the shared section, then outline it in black along with a simple five-point star nearby.

Fill the moon in a warm yellow or soft gold and the star in white or the same color, keeping both shapes flat with no gradient. A closed, sleepy expression drawn right onto the moon, two curved lash lines and a small smile, turns this from a plain shape into a character in seconds.

Eye level does not apply here the way it does for an object, but light still does: decide the moon is glowing, then add a soft ring of small dots or a faint halo of the same yellow around its curved edge to suggest that gentle light reaching outward.

Keep the crescent fat rather than thin, since a slim sliver moon tends to disappear against white paper.

Palette: Gold Yellow,White,Black

Bring back a retro favorite: a peace sign circle with small flowers growing around its edge. Draw the peace sign structure first, a circle divided by a vertical line and two diagonal lines meeting at the center, then outline it in black.

Fill the peace sign itself in one bold color, then add three or four tiny five-petal flowers tucked around the outer edge of the circle, each with its own small smiley or plain center. Keep the flowers smaller than the main shape so they read as decoration rather than competing with the peace sign for attention.

If you want to vary this one later, swap the flowers for small stars or hearts around the edge instead, since the same basic layout works with almost any small repeating shape tucked around a bold central symbol.

One tip for today: pick flower colors that contrast with the peace sign rather than matching it, so the two elements stay visually separate instead of blending into one shape.

Palette: Sky Blue,Hot Pink,Sunflower Yellow,Black

Soften the mood with a friendly ghost wearing a small bow on top of its head. Draw a rounded dome shape for the body with a wavy bottom edge, the way a sheet would ripple, then a small bow sitting just above where the head would be.

Outline both in black, fill the ghost body in white or a very pale lavender so the black outline does the heavy lifting, then color the bow in a contrasting bright shade. Add two small closed eyes and a tiny open mouth for a sweet rather than spooky expression.

The wavy bottom edge is where this tends to go wrong, since too many small waves make the ghost look frilly instead of floaty. Keep it to three or four wide, gentle waves across the bottom for the cleanest silhouette.

If pale lavender is not in your Posca set, plain white with just the black outline looks just as good against light paper.

Palette: Pale Lavender,Hot Pink,Black

Shift into a cozy everyday object: a coffee cup with a curling ribbon of steam rising from the top. Draw the cup as a simple rounded rectangle with a handle on one side and a saucer beneath it, outlining the whole thing in black before adding any color.

Fill the cup in a bold color and the saucer in white or a lighter shade, then add two or three thin curling steam lines above the rim, each one a loose S-curve drawn in a single light stroke rather than traced over repeatedly. A small pattern, stripes or polka dots, painted onto the cup once the base color is dry gives it a bit more character.

If you enjoy cozy little scenes like this, the mood pairs nicely with the interior corners found in watercolor and ink ideas, just built here in flat marker color instead.

Keep the steam lines thin and pale gray rather than black, since black steam lines tend to look more like smoke than warmth.

Palette: Terracotta,White,Light Gray,Black

Bring in a small beach scene with one curling wave and a sun sitting just above it. Draw the wave as a wide curved shape that rolls over at the top like a gentle hook, then a simple half or full sun in the upper corner, outlining both in black.

Fill the wave in two shades of blue, a darker tone at the base and a lighter one near the curling top, giving it a sense of depth without any real blending since the two flat colors simply sit side by side. Fill the sun in yellow or orange, adding short rays if there is room above it.

Where the eye level sits changes this one: draw the wave as if you are standing right at the shoreline looking slightly up at it, which makes the curl feel bigger and more dramatic than a wave viewed from above would.

A few small white foam dots along the top edge of the wave finish it off nicely.

Palette: Deep Blue,Sky Blue,Sunflower Yellow,White

Move from beach to dance floor with a round disco ball covered in small mirrored facets. Draw a circle first, then divide it with a loose grid of curved lines running both horizontally and vertically across the surface, following the curve of the circle rather than drawing them perfectly straight.

Outline the whole grid in black, then fill the little facet squares in alternating shades, silver, pale blue, and white, so the surface looks like it is catching light from different angles even though every square is just flat color. A short line at the top connects it to a small hook, as if it is hanging.

If drawing a curved grid freehand feels tricky, lightly trace a circle using a small lid or coin for the outer shape, then build the grid lines inside that guide. Readers chasing a similar sparkle in watercolor music scenes will recognize the same love of shine and rhythm here, just in marker form.

Keep the facet colors to two or three total, since too many different shades make the pattern look chaotic rather than glittery.

You Will Need

• small lid or coin to trace the circle

Palette: Silver Gray,Pale Blue,White,Black

Bring some nature back in with a butterfly whose wings carry a bold repeating pattern instead of realistic markings. Draw a simple body line down the center first, then two upper wings and two lower wings branching out symmetrically from it, outlining the whole shape in black before any color goes on.

Fill each wing in a base color, then once dry, add a repeating pattern on top, dots, stripes, or small circles, using a contrasting color so the pattern sits clearly above the base. Keeping the pattern identical on both sides is what sells the symmetry, so plan the design on one wing first and copy it onto its matching pair.

Measuring this one by eye helps: fold your paper in half before drawing if you want a guaranteed mirror image, or lightly pencil a center line and check both wings against it as you go.

Two antennae with small round tips on top finish the shape nicely.

Palette: Sky Blue,Hot Pink,White,Black

Keep the citrus bright with a single round lemon slice, seeds and segment lines included. Draw a circle for the outer rind first, then a slightly smaller circle inside it, and divide the inner circle into six or seven wedge segments with thin lines meeting near the center.

Outline it all in black, fill the thin rind ring in yellow, and fill the segmented center in a paler yellow so the two rings stay visually distinct. A few small oval seeds dotted across a couple of the segments and a soft white highlight along one curved edge finish the slice.

Segment lines are the fiddly part, since uneven spacing makes the slice look lopsided. Lightly mark the center point first, then draw each line from that same point outward, like spokes on a wheel, so they all meet cleanly.

No pale yellow marker on hand? A touch of white added into a regular yellow fill works as a stand-in for the center.

Palette: Lemon Yellow,Pale Yellow,White,Black

Head into a small corner of outer space with a round planet circled by a tilted ring. Draw the planet as a simple circle first, then an ellipse crossing in front of and behind it at an angle to suggest the ring wrapping around, outlining everything in black.

Fill the planet body in one bold color, with a band or two of a second shade across its middle to break up the surface, then fill the ring in a contrasting color, leaving the section that passes behind the planet unpainted or covered by the planet’s outline. A scatter of small star dots around the whole scene fills out the empty space nicely.

The ring is the part to watch, since a ring drawn as a flat oval with no gap looks pasted on rather than wrapped around. Make sure the ellipse clearly passes behind the planet on one side and in front on the other, even if just by a thin sliver, to sell the three-dimensional feel.

Try two or three different planets on one page next time, each with its own color combination and ring angle.

Palette: Coral Orange,Deep Purple,White,Black

Draw something to sip on next: a tall bubble tea cup with a wide straw and a scatter of tapioca pearls at the bottom. Build the cup as a simple trapezoid, wider at the top than the base, add a domed lid, and place a thick straight straw poking out at an angle through the top.

Outline it in black, fill the drink itself in a milky tan or soft pink, then add a cluster of small dark circles at the bottom to suggest the pearls settling there. A thin line partway up the cup separates the drink from the empty space near the lid, keeping the proportions believable.

If this is your first time drawing a cup like this, keep the straw wider than feels natural, since bubble tea straws are noticeably thicker than a regular drinking straw and a thin one will look wrong immediately.

For a quicker version, skip the lid detail and let the straw simply disappear into a flat top line instead.

Palette: Milky Tan,Dark Brown,White,Black

Take the rainbow and cloud pairing from earlier in a new direction: a single round cloud with a short rainbow trailing behind it like a tail. Draw the cloud as a cluster of overlapping bumps, then attach three curved rainbow bands flowing off one side, tapering and fading into the paper rather than ending in a hard line.

Outline the cloud in black and fill it white, then outline and fill the rainbow bands in solid color just as you did for the full rainbow earlier, keeping the bands thick enough to stay bold even as they narrow toward the tip. A simple smiling face on the cloud ties the whole thing together.

Getting the proportion right between cloud and tail matters here: keep the tail no longer than the cloud itself is wide, otherwise the rainbow tail overwhelms the character and it stops reading as a cloud with a tail and starts looking like a rainbow with a cloud stuck on top.

Two bands instead of three works just as well if you want a simpler, faster version.

Palette: White,Hot Pink,Sky Blue,Sunflower Yellow

Give fire a bit of character with a single teardrop flame shape wearing a cheeky little face. Draw the flame as a tall, pointed teardrop that narrows and curves slightly at the top, outlining it in black before filling it in with one or two shades of warm color.

Layer a smaller inner flame shape in a lighter color near the base, the way real flames show a paler core, then add two simple eyes and a small open mouth partway up the shape for the face. Keeping the face lower in the flame rather than right at the pointed tip makes the expression easier to read clearly.

If you want to vary this one later, try a cool blue and white version instead of the usual orange and red, since a flat marker flame reads just as convincingly in an unexpected color as long as the teardrop shape and layered core stay the same.

One tip for today: make the point at the top slightly wavy rather than perfectly straight, since a soft wobble at the tip suggests movement even in a completely flat, still drawing.

Palette: Flame Orange,Yellow,Red,Black

Close out the list with two dice sitting side by side, each wearing a small smiling face among its dots. Draw two squares at a slight overlap or offset so they feel like a pair rather than two separate drawings, then round the corners slightly before outlining both in black.

Fill each die in white or a bold color of your choice, then add the pip dots in black or a contrasting shade, using a different number on each die, like a five and a three, so the pair feels like a real roll rather than a repeated pattern. Tuck a tiny smiling face into the gaps between dots on one die for a playful finishing touch.

Rounded corners are easy to overdo here, so round them just enough to soften the square without turning it into a circle, comparing the curve against the straight edge as you go to keep it subtle.

A quick ten-minute version uses plain dot faces with no expression at all, while the longer version adds the smiling face and a soft drop shadow beneath both dice for a bit more depth.

Palette: White,Black,Hot Pink

What to Do Next

Pick whichever idea made you want to grab a marker first, a cup of coffee for a cozy start or the disco ball for something bolder, and work it on a single sheet of smooth white paper. Once the first one is dry, the next doodle on this list is already waiting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paper works best for a posca art doodle?

Smooth, thick white paper works best, since Posca ink sits on top rather than soaking in. A mixed media pad or marker paper around 150gsm or heavier stops the ink bleeding through to the next page.

Do I need to sketch in pencil before using Posca markers?

A light pencil sketch helps, especially for symmetrical shapes like hearts or butterflies. Keep pencil lines faint so the black Posca outline covers them completely once you trace over the top.

How do I stop Posca paint markers from streaking when filling in color?

Shake the marker well and pump the tip on scrap paper first until the paint flows evenly. Fill large areas with slow, overlapping strokes in one direction rather than scribbling back and forth.

Can I layer Posca colors on top of each other?

Yes, Posca paint is opaque enough to layer once the first color is fully dry. Light colors show up well over dark ones, which makes details like the white dots on a mushroom or seeds on a strawberry easy to add last.

What is the easiest way to get a clean black outline?

Draw the outline in one slow, steady pass rather than several short strokes, turning the paper instead of twisting your wrist around curves. A fine tip Posca marker gives more control for outlines than a broad one.
