28 Tennis Art Painting Ideas for Courtside Style and Summer Club Days

66

Tennis art painting is having a real moment, and it is easy to see why once you start mixing that clay orange against crisp white and court green. These scenes let you paint people, pets and club details without any pressure to get a sport right: you are after the mood of a sunny afternoon at the club, not a realistic backhand.

Below you will find 28 ideas that move from a single racket on a bench to a full doubles match at sunset, each one built to finish in a single sitting with gouache. Pick whichever one matches your mood tonight and work through the rest on slower afternoons.

Start the whole list with a woman serving on a clay court, since it sets the palette you will reuse again and again: clay orange ground, court green behind her, white pleated skirt popping against both. Sketch her in pencil first as simple shapes, an oval head, a triangle skirt, and two straight lines for the raised arm and racket, before any paint touches the page.

Block the clay in first with a flat wash of orange gouache, let it dry, then paint her figure as flat silhouettes of white and skin tone on top. Add the racket last in a thin dark line so it reads clearly against the sky.

Proportion is what makes or breaks a serving pose: compare the length of her skirt to the length of her arm before you commit to paint, since a serving arm that is too short flattens the whole action. If this is your first time posing a figure, hold your own arm up and look in a mirror to check the angle.

No clay orange on hand, mix cadmium orange with a touch of burnt sienna. Keep her shadow short and simple underfoot to ground her on the court.

Move from a full figure to a quiet still life with a tennis ball can set beside a glass of lemonade, a nice palette cleanser after painting a whole pose. Pencil in the can as a simple cylinder and the glass as a slightly narrower one beside it, keeping both sitting on the same flat line so they do not look like they are floating.

Paint the can body in tennis ball yellow first, then the lemonade in a slightly warmer yellow so the two do not blur into one shape. Drop in ice cubes as small white rectangles with a thin grey edge once the lemonade layer is fully dry.

Edges matter most here: keep the rim of the glass crisp and let a little dry brush texture sit along the can’s label for a worn look rather than painting it perfectly smooth. A damp brush can lift paint back off the glass if your ice cubes come out too heavy.

Swap lemonade for iced tea in a warm amber if you prefer that palette. Finish with one white gouache highlight dot on the glass to catch the light.

Palette: Tennis Ball Yellow,Lemonade Yellow,Crisp White,Soft Grey

Two friends sitting courtside with towels around their shoulders makes a lovely next step once you are comfortable with one figure, since you only need to repeat the same simplified shapes with small variations. Pencil both women on a bench as rounded torsos and triangle skirts, angling one slightly toward the other so they read as mid conversation.

Paint the bench first in flat white, then block in each figure’s skirt and top in two different but complementary colors so they do not merge into one shape. Add the towels last as soft curved white shapes draped over their shoulders.

Where this goes wrong is making both women identical: vary hair color, towel drape or skirt length slightly so each reads as her own person. If you want an easier version, paint them from behind instead of in profile, which hides faces entirely.

No bench reference handy, a plain horizontal plank shape works fine. Keep the court green behind them loose and simple so it does not compete with the figures.

Palette: Court Green,Crisp White,Soft Pink,Pale Blue

Give one friend a visor and the other sunglasses pushed up on her head, a small detail that reads as very current tenniscore styling.

Bring in the grass court club with strawberries and cream for a scene that leans fully into the genteel side of tenniscore. Lay the composition out with the court taking the back third of the page, a low table in the foreground holding a simple bowl shape, and a wedge of blue sky above.

Paint the grass in a cooler green than your usual court green to separate it from clay-court scenes, then let that dry before adding the white bowl and its contents. Strawberries go in as small red ovals with a dab of green at the top, cream as a soft white pool beside them.

Eye level sits low here, close to table height, which pushes the court itself into the background and lets the strawberries feel close enough to reach for. That shift in eye level is what gives this scene its relaxed, garden party feeling rather than a sporty one.

Fresh strawberries not available for reference, a quick image search works just as well. A single red gouache dot repeated with slight size variation reads as a believable bowlful.

Palette: Grass Green,Strawberry Red,Cream White,Sky Blue

Give yourself a breather with a tennis racket leaning on a white bench, a quiet object study that works beautifully as a smaller piece between bigger scenes. Pencil the bench as two simple planks and legs, then rest the racket diagonally against one arm so it leans naturally rather than floating in place.

Paint the bench first in flat white with a thin grey shadow line underneath, then build the racket on top once that layer is dry. Keep the racket head as a simple oval outline with a few straight lines suggesting strings, rather than painting every cross-thread.

The ten minute version stops right there: bench, racket, a flat green background. The forty minute version adds a dropped tennis ball beside the bench leg and a soft cast shadow stretching across the ground, which gives the whole piece more presence.

No white gouache for the bench, titanium white mixed with a touch of your background green keeps it from looking stark. One tip for today: paint the racket strings with a single loaded brush stroke rather than many small lines, it reads cleaner at this scale.

Palette: Crisp White,Court Green,Charcoal Grey,Tennis Ball Yellow

Add some movement and charm with a dog chasing a tennis ball, a subject that brings pets into your tennis art painting without needing any sporting detail at all. Sketch the dog mid-stride with legs stretched front and back rather than standing still, since that stretched pose is what reads as running.

Block the dog’s body in one flat color first, leave the legs and tail as simple extensions of that same shape, then paint the yellow ball slightly ahead of its nose to show direction of travel. A thin dust cloud behind the back paws sells the speed without extra detail.

Dry brush a little texture along the dog’s back and tail with a nearly dry brush loaded with a darker shade, this breaks up the flat color just enough to suggest fur without painting individual hairs. If the texture gets too heavy, a damp brush lifts it back toward flat again.

Any breed works here, a golden retriever or spaniel silhouette reads clearly at this scale. Keep the court green behind loose so the dog stays the clear focus.

Palette: Golden Tan,Tennis Ball Yellow,Court Green,Crisp White

Slow back down with a vintage wooden racket in its press, a nostalgic still life that suits anyone drawn to the vintage side of club style. Pencil the press frame as a simple rectangle with rounded corners and the racket head nestled inside it, wing nuts marked as two small circles at the corners.

Paint the wood tones first in a warm honey brown, let that dry fully, then add the cream strings and the darker frame edge of the press on top. Keep every line here straighter and more deliberate than in the looser scenes, since this is an object study and benefits from a touch more precision.

Edges are everything with the wood grain: a dry brush dragged lightly over the honey base once dry adds believable grain without you having to paint individual lines. If the dry brush texture looks too scratchy, soften it with one thin glaze of the same honey color over the top.

No honey brown on your palette, mix burnt sienna with a touch of yellow ochre. This piece pairs nicely with the wicker basket idea further down the list if you want a matching vintage pair.

Palette: Honey Brown,Cream,Charcoal Grey,Crisp White

Shift into a bird’s eye view with a court seen from above with long shadows, a satisfying change of pace after several ground-level scenes. Lay the court lines out with a ruler first in pencil, since straight true lines are what sell this aerial angle, then fill the court itself in one flat green or clay color depending on which surface you prefer.

Paint the white court lines next with a steady hand or a strip of masking tape as a guide, then add the long shadow of a single figure or net post stretching diagonally across the surface. That shadow is doing all the storytelling work in this piece, so make it long and confident rather than short and tentative.

Looking straight down means your light source sits very high and to one side, which is exactly what produces those dramatic stretched shadows. Keep every shadow in the piece falling the same direction and length to keep the light believable.

Masking tape unavailable, a ruler and steady wrist work fine for the lines. One tip for today: paint the net as a thin dark line with small white dashes rather than detailing each mesh square.

You Will Need

• masking tape for straight court lines

Palette: Court Green,Crisp White,Shadow Grey,Clay Orange

Bring a figure back in with a girl in a visor drinking iced tea, a relaxed portrait moment rather than any action pose. Sketch her head and shoulders only, keeping the visor as a simple curved band across her forehead and the glass tilted slightly toward her mouth.

Paint her skin tone and visor first, then the glass of iced tea in warm amber with a straw as one thin white line. Hair goes in last over the visor edge so it sits naturally rather than looking stuck on top.

If this is your first portrait at this simplified level, keep features to three small marks only, two dot eyes and a simple curved mouth, which suits the flat poster style far better than detailed shading. Oversized sunglasses are an easy fix if faces feel daunting, since they hide most of the features entirely.

No amber for the iced tea, burnt sienna thinned with water gives the same warm glow. Try this one small and square for a fun card-sized piece.

Palette: Skin Tone,Visor White,Amber Tea,Court Green

Widen back out to a full setting with a club pavilion with striped awnings, a lovely architectural subject that anchors the whole tenniscore mood board. Block the pavilion as a simple rectangle building with a peaked roof line, then mark the awning positions over doors and windows before any stripes go in.

Paint the building’s base color first in crisp white, let it dry completely, then add the awning stripes in alternating court green and white using a ruler or the edge of a card for straight lines. Windows and door go in last as simple dark rectangles.

You can finish a simple version of this pavilion in about ten minutes with just the building and one awning. The forty minute version adds potted plants flanking the entrance and a few tiny figures strolling past, which gives the scene real depth and life.

No ruler on hand, fold a scrap of paper to get a straight edge for the stripes. Keep the sky behind pale and empty so the striped awning stays the star of the piece.

Palette: Crisp White,Court Green,Pale Sky,Charcoal Grey

Add a burst of energy with a ball machine shooting balls across a court, a fun mechanical subject that breaks up all the figures and still life pieces nicely. Pencil the machine as a simple tilted cylinder on a tripod base, then mark a diagonal path across the court where the balls will fly.

Paint the machine body in a flat grey or white first, then add three or four yellow balls along that diagonal path, making each one slightly smaller as it travels further from the machine to suggest distance. A thin white arc line behind each ball reads as motion without any extra shading needed.

If you want an easier version, paint just one ball mid-air and skip the trail entirely. For more confidence with the subject, look at real ball machine photos online first, since the tripod legs and hopper shape are easy to get wrong from memory.

No grey gouache, mix black and white gouache fresh each time rather than buying a separate tube. Keep the court lines simple so the flying balls stay the clear focus.

Palette: Machine Grey,Tennis Ball Yellow,Court Green,Crisp White

Settle into another still life with a tennis bag spilling balls and a water bottle, a satisfying subject that lets you practice a cluster of overlapping shapes. Pencil the bag first as a simple rounded rectangle lying on its side, unzipped slightly at the top with a few balls tumbling out and the water bottle propped against it.

Paint the bag in one confident color block first, then the spilled balls on top once that layer is dry, overlapping a couple of them slightly to show they have actually tumbled rather than sitting in a neat row. The water bottle goes in last with a simple white highlight stripe down one side.

Compare the size of each ball to the bag’s zipper pull before you paint them in, since balls painted too large next to a small bag read as toys rather than tennis balls. Keeping that scale honest is what makes the whole pile believable.

No navy for the bag, a deep forest green ties it neatly back into your court palette. Scatter a couple of loose balls further from the bag for a more casual, just-arrived feeling.

Palette: Deep Navy,Tennis Ball Yellow,Crisp White,Forest Green

Take the scene coastal with a court by the sea with white villas, a dreamy subject that pairs the club palette with a holiday mood. Lay the composition out in three simple bands, the court across the bottom third, a strip of white villas in the middle, and open sky and sea filling the top.

Paint the sea first in a flat blue, then the court below it in your usual green or clay, letting both dry before adding the white villa shapes with small dark windows dotted across their fronts. Keep rooflines simple triangles or flat rectangles rather than anything architecturally detailed.

If you have painted Mediterranean scenes before, this ties in nicely, and it is worth looking at how summer watercolor painting ideas handle that same white-building-against-blue-sea palette for extra reference. Keep every white shape here crisp and flat rather than shaded, which keeps the retro poster feeling intact.

No deep blue in your kit, ultramarine mixed with a touch of white gets you there quickly. One tip for today: leave a thin white line between sea and sky so the two blues do not bleed together.

Palette: Sea Blue,Villa White,Court Green,Sky Blue

Build toward a bigger piece with a doubles match at sunset, which brings together everything you have practiced so far: four simplified figures, a court, and now a warm sky to manage too. Pencil all four players first as small simple shapes spread across both sides of the net, keeping poses varied so no two figures match exactly.

Paint the sunset sky first in bands of warm orange through to a deeper pink, let that dry fully, then add the court beneath it in a slightly darkened green to suggest the fading light. The four figures go in last as flat silhouettes, dark enough to read clearly against that warm sky.

Where this sunset trick comes in: your light source sits low on the horizon, which means every figure needs a longer shadow stretching toward the viewer rather than straight down. That one shift instantly makes the scene feel like evening rather than midday.

No pink in your sunset mix, a touch of white into your warm orange gets a convincing fade. Keep the net as a simple dark line between the two pairs of players.

Palette: Sunset Orange,Blush Pink,Silhouette Grey,Court Green

Switch gears with a tennis outfit laid out on a bed, a flat lay style piece that tennis style lovers will especially enjoy painting. Arrange the composition from above, pencilling a pleated skirt, a simple top, a visor and a pair of socks spread out as though just chosen for the day, with a bedspread or quilt pattern filling the background.

Paint the largest pieces first, the skirt and top, in your crisp white and one accent color, then add the smaller items like the visor and socks once those base shapes are dry. The quilt or bedspread beneath can stay a simple flat pattern of stripes or small shapes so it supports the outfit rather than competing with it.

This flat lay composition works especially well as a simple version: just the skirt and top with nothing else, finished in well under ten minutes. The longer version adds a racket, a pair of sneakers and a scrunchie tucked into the corner for a fuller styled scene.

No real outfit to reference, any product photo from a tennis clothing brand works as a stand-in. Keep every fold in the fabric suggested with a single line rather than fully shaded.

Palette: Crisp White,Court Green,Soft Pink,Bedspread Blue

Bring energy back with a ball kid running across the court, a fun small figure subject full of movement. Sketch the figure leaning forward mid-run, one arm pumping and the other reaching slightly for a ball, legs caught in a clear running stride rather than standing still.

Paint the uniform in one flat bright color first, a shade that stands apart from the court green so the figure pops immediately, then add the court beneath once the figure layer is dry. A simple motion line or two behind the back foot finishes the running feeling.

Compare the length of the front leg to the back leg before committing to the pose, since a stride where both legs are the same length reads as standing rather than sprinting. Exaggerating that stretch slightly actually reads as more natural at this small scale.

No bright uniform color available, a simple white shirt with a colored cap does the same job. Keep the ball kid small within the frame so the court itself still has room to breathe around them.

Palette: Uniform Coral,Court Green,Crisp White,Tennis Ball Yellow

Slow the mood with an empty court with fallen leaves after rain, a quieter autumnal subject that stands apart from the sunny poolside energy of earlier ideas. Pencil the court lines loosely rather than ruler-straight this time, since a slightly wet, softened court benefits from gentler edges than the crisp aerial view did earlier.

Paint the court surface first in a slightly darkened, damp-looking green or clay, then scatter a handful of leaf shapes in warm orange and brown across it once that base layer is dry. A few reflective puddle patches in a lighter tone add to the just-rained feeling without much extra work.

Dry brush a little darker green along the court edges to suggest dampness soaking into the surface, and if it gets too heavy, a clean damp brush softens it back down. This subject also fits nicely alongside ideas from autumn oil painting ideas if you want to keep exploring that same fallen leaf palette elsewhere.

No orange or brown leaves reference nearby, any autumn tree photo works fine. Leave the net post standing alone in the frame for a touch of quiet stillness.

Palette: Damp Green,Leaf Orange,Leaf Brown,Puddle Grey

Try a structural subject with an umpire chair and scoreboard, which gives you good practice at tall, simple vertical shapes. Pencil the chair as a tall ladder-like frame with a small platform seat near the top, then add the scoreboard as a simple rectangle on legs beside it with a few bold numbers painted on.

Paint the chair frame first in white or a pale wood tone, let it dry, then add the scoreboard body and its numbers in a contrasting dark color so they read clearly from a distance even at small scale. Keep the numbers simple, thick block shapes rather than a proper typeface.

If this is your first time painting a tall thin structure like this chair, work from the base upward in pencil first to keep the legs evenly spaced, since uneven spacing is the easiest way for a ladder shape to look wobbly. A ruler helps keep the uprights parallel.

No dark enough color for the numbers, mix your green and a touch of black for a deep, legible shade. Place the chair slightly off center for a more natural, candid composition.

Palette: Crisp White,Wood Tan,Charcoal Grey,Court Green

Return to a small quiet still life with a cap and sunglasses left on a court bench, a lovely simple subject for when you want something fast between bigger scenes. Pencil the bench plank first, then the cap resting crown-down with its brim curved slightly, and the sunglasses folded beside it with their lenses angled toward the viewer.

Paint the bench in flat white, let it dry, then build the cap in a single bold color with a thin darker line marking the brim’s edge. The sunglasses go in last with two simple dark lens shapes connected by a thin bridge line.

Keep every edge here crisp and clean rather than textured, since small objects like this read best in the flat poster style when they stay simple. A kneaded eraser is handy for cleaning up any stray pencil lines around the cap brim before you paint over them.

No particular cap color in mind, a classic white cap with a green brim ties neatly back into the court palette. This one works especially well as a small square piece.

Palette: Crisp White,Court Green,Lens Black,Wood Tan

Have some fun with a tennis ball cake for a club birthday, a playful subject that mixes food painting with the tennis theme. Pencil the cake as a simple round shape on a cake stand, with the top iced to look like a tennis ball complete with the curved seam lines across its surface.

Paint the cake base in tennis ball yellow first, then add the white curved seam lines once that layer is fully dry, using a thin brush or a white gel pen for a crisp, confident line. A few candles on top and a simple plate or stand beneath finish the piece.

Getting the curved seam lines right is the tricky part: look at an actual tennis ball for reference, since the seam curves in two opposing arcs rather than one simple wavy line across the middle. Practicing that curve on scrap paper first saves a reworked cake top.

No white gel pen for the seams, a fine brush loaded with white gouache works just as well with a steady hand. This idea also pairs nicely with other food-themed painting if you enjoyed it, including ideas over in gouache painting ideas for beginners.

You Will Need

• white gel pen for the seam lines

Palette: Tennis Ball Yellow,Crisp White,Candle Pink,Plate White

Add real warmth with a mother teaching a child to hold a racket, a tender two-figure scene that works beautifully at this simplified level. Sketch the mother kneeling or bending slightly behind the child, her hands guiding the child’s smaller hands around the racket grip, both figures reduced to simple rounded shapes.

Paint the two figures as one connected silhouette rather than two separate shapes where their hands overlap, which keeps the gesture reading clearly as guidance rather than two people standing apart. Build the mother’s clothing in one color and the child’s in a lighter or brighter shade so the age difference is clear even without detailed faces.

Size difference is the trick that sells this entire scene: make the child noticeably smaller than the mother, both in height and in the scale of the racket they are holding together. If that size gap is too subtle, the two figures just read as similarly aged friends instead.

No clear pose in mind, look at any parent-and-child sports photo for the general lean and hand position. Keep the background simple so the gesture between the two figures stays the clear focus.

Palette: Skin Tone,Soft Pink,Pale Yellow,Court Green

Take the setting urban with a tennis court on a city rooftop, a striking subject that mixes the club palette with a skyline backdrop. Lay the court across the lower half of the page as usual, then build a simple skyline of rectangular buildings in varying heights behind and above it, with a wide open sky filling the top.

Paint the sky first, then the distant buildings as flat silhouette shapes once it is dry, keeping their color slightly muted so they recede behind the brighter court. The court itself goes in last with its usual crisp lines, which should read as the brightest, most saturated part of the whole piece.

Varying the buildings’ heights and widths slightly as you paint them is what keeps a skyline interesting rather than looking like a repeated pattern. Try sketching five or six rectangles of clearly different proportions before you even pick up the paint.

No skyline reference in mind, any city photo works for silhouette shapes alone. Keep a single rooftop railing line along the court’s edge to remind the viewer this court sits high above the street.

Palette: Court Green,Building Grey,Sky Blue,Crisp White

Return to a single working figure with a groundskeeper sweeping lines on orange clay, a nice behind the scenes moment for your tennis series. Sketch the figure bent slightly forward pushing a long-handled broom or line sweeper, the tool’s handle running diagonally from hand to ground.

Paint the clay court first in your usual orange, then once dry, add a lighter swept stripe directly behind the broom to show the freshly cleaned line against the rest of the textured clay. The figure goes in last as a simple silhouette, keeping the pose leaning into the push for believable effort.

Dry brush texture across the unswept clay areas using a nearly dry brush loaded with a slightly darker orange, which contrasts nicely against the smooth, freshly swept stripe. If the texture ends up too heavy or blotchy, a clean damp brush can soften it back toward flat.

No long-handled broom reference handy, any photo of a court maintenance tool works fine for the general shape. Keep the lighter swept stripe perfectly straight to contrast with the looser texture everywhere else.

Palette: Clay Orange,Swept Light Orange,Silhouette Grey,Crisp White

Soften the mood with a picnic blanket beside a public court, a relaxed scene that pairs well with the earlier grass court idea but feels more casual. Pencil a simple checked or striped blanket laid flat in the foreground, with a basket, a thermos and maybe a book scattered across it, the court itself just visible beyond.

Paint the blanket pattern first as a flat grid of two alternating colors, then add the scattered picnic items on top once that base is dry, keeping each one as a simple recognizable shape rather than detailed. The court behind stays loose and slightly smaller in scale to emphasize how far back it sits.

If you enjoy pattern work, this is a great chance to practice an even checked grid, and the same flat pattern approach shows up often in gouache painting flowers for beginners if you want more practice with confident flat shapes elsewhere. Keep the grid lines evenly spaced with a ruler for the cleanest result.

No checked blanket reference, a simple striped blanket is an easier substitute and just as charming. One tip for today: tuck one corner of the blanket slightly under the picnic basket for a natural, lived-in feeling.

Palette: Blanket Red,Blanket White,Court Green,Basket Tan

Capture a quieter pre-match moment with a girl tying her sneakers before a match, a nice intimate pose that contrasts well against the bigger action scenes earlier in the list. Sketch her seated or crouched, one leg bent up with her hands reaching toward the laces, head tilted down toward her foot.

Paint her clothing and skin tone first in simple flat blocks, then add the sneaker last with its laces as a few confident crossing lines rather than every individual loop. Keep her hands simplified to rounded shapes near the laces rather than detailed fingers.

If this is your first time with a seated, folded pose like this, it helps to try it yourself first, sitting and reaching toward your own shoe, and glancing in a mirror to see how the knee, hands and head actually line up. That quick check saves a lot of guessing with proportions.

No particular sneaker color in mind, crisp white with a single colored stripe reads clearly at this scale. Keep the background plain so this quiet, focused moment stays the clear subject.

Palette: Skin Tone,Crisp White,Court Green,Sneaker Stripe Pink

Bring back a vintage still life feeling with rackets in a wicker basket at a club entrance, a lovely companion piece to the earlier racket in its press. Pencil the basket first as a simple woven oval shape, then add two or three racket heads and handles poking out at slightly different angles so they do not look identically placed.

Paint the basket in a warm tan first, then once dry, add a simple crosshatch of slightly darker lines across its surface to suggest the woven texture without painting every strand. The rackets go in last, each handle a different small accent color so they read as distinct rather than duplicates.

For more variety next time you paint this scene, swap the rackets for a bundle of rolled towels or a stack of visors instead, since the same basket composition works for several different club entrance still lifes. The basket and its woven texture stay the constant element across versions.

No tan gouache mixed yet, yellow ochre with a touch of white gets you there quickly. Angle the basket slightly rather than painting it dead straight on for a more natural, candid feel.

Palette: Basket Tan,Charcoal Grey,Court Green,Soft Pink

Zoom right in close with a ball caught in the net, a simple graphic moment that makes a surprisingly strong small piece. Pencil the net as a grid of diamond or square shapes first, then place a single yellow ball nestled into one section of that grid, slightly pressing the surrounding mesh lines out of shape around it.

Paint the net grid in thin dark lines over a pale background first, let it dry completely, then add the yellow ball on top so it sits clearly in front of the mesh pattern. A tiny shadow line just beneath the ball within the net helps it feel caught rather than simply painted over the grid.

Keeping the net grid even and consistent is the main challenge here: a ruler or a light pencil guide grid underneath helps enormously, since net lines drawn freehand tend to drift out of alignment across a page. Painting the grid in one sitting while your spacing stays consistent in your eye also helps.

No ruler for the grid, a piece of scrap paper folded into even sections works as a spacing guide. Keep the background behind the net pale and simple so the grid itself stays legible.

Palette: Tennis Ball Yellow,Net Grey,Crisp White,Shadow Grey

Close the whole series out with players shaking hands at the net, a warm finishing moment that wraps up your tennis art painting series nicely. Sketch two figures facing each other across the net, arms reaching forward to meet in the middle, bodies angled slightly toward one another rather than facing straight ahead.

Paint each player in a different color block so they read as two distinct people even at this simplified scale, then add the net between them last as a simple horizontal line with light mesh marks. The clasped hands go in as one small connected shape rather than two separate hands, which keeps the gesture reading clearly.

This closing scene works as a satisfying quick ten minute piece with just the two silhouettes and the net line. The forty minute version adds a soft sunset sky behind them and a long stretched shadow from each figure, echoing the doubles match scene from earlier in the list for a nice visual bookend.

No two-figure reference in mind, two friends shaking hands anywhere works for the general pose and angle. Finish with a single warm wash over the whole sky for a satisfying final piece in the series.

Palette: Court Green,Soft Pink,Pale Blue,Crisp White

What to Do Next

Pick whichever scene matches your mood today, tape a sheet of smooth paper to your board, and block in the biggest shape first, the court, the sky or the bench, before adding any figures or small details on top.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paint works best for tennis art painting in this retro poster style?

Gouache works best, since its flat, opaque finish gives the crisp colored shapes this style needs. Acrylic is a fine substitute if that is what you already own, though it dries faster and needs quicker blocking in.

Do I need to know how to paint people to try these tennis scenes?

No, every figure in these ideas is built from simple rounded shapes rather than realistic anatomy. Keep faces to two dots and a simple mouth, or hide them with a visor, cap or sunglasses if figures feel daunting.

How do I get that flat retro club poster look?

Keep every shape flat and opaque rather than blended, with crisp clean edges between colors. Let each layer dry fully before painting the next shape on top, and avoid shading or gradients within a single object.

What is the easiest tennis art painting idea to start with?

A simple still life like the tennis ball can beside lemonade or the racket leaning on a bench is the easiest starting point. Both use just a few flat shapes and no figures or complicated poses.

What paper should I use for gouache tennis scenes?

A smooth, fairly heavyweight illustration or watercolor paper works best, since it keeps flat gouache washes even without excess texture showing through. Avoid very rough textured paper, which breaks up the crisp flat color this style relies on.
