31 Paris Aesthetic Drawing Ideas of Snowy Rooftops, Seine Bookstalls and Christmas Lights on the Grand Avenue

9

A paris aesthetic drawing is less about getting every balcony railing right and more about catching a mood: grey rooftops under snow, a string of lights, a cup of something warm on a marble table. Watercolor suits this city because it already looks soft and a little blurred at the edges, especially in winter, so a loose wash and a few ink lines go a surprisingly long way.

Below you will find thirty one small scenes, from a pair of empty café chairs to a couple waltzing by the river, arranged from the simplest washes up to the ones with more going on. Pick whichever one matches the mood you are in tonight, mix blush pink and dove grey on your palette, and let the paper stay white wherever the snow or the lights need to shine.

Start with the rooftops, since the Eiffel Tower over snowy grey rooftops at dawn works best when the sky goes in first and dries completely before you touch a single chimney pot. Lay a pale wash of dove grey and a whisper of blush pink across the top two thirds of the page for the dawn sky, then let it dry while you plan where the tower will sit.

Once dry, paint the rooftop shapes as simple overlapping triangles and rectangles in grey with a touch of blue, leaving tiny white gaps for snow caught on the ridges. Add the tower last in a thin wash of grey, using a ruler or just a steady hand for the two main angled legs, then a few ink lines for the crosswork once everything is bone dry.

The place this goes wrong is painting the tower before the sky, which leaves hard edges where you wanted softness. If that happens, soften the tower’s outline with a damp brush while the paint is still slightly wet, or just let it read as a silhouette and move on.

If you only have one grey, mix it from blue and a touch of brown rather than buying a second tube, since a warm grey suits a dawn sky better than a cold one.

Keep the last idea’s soft dawn palette going with two wicker café chairs and a little round table catching low winter sun on an empty terrace. This one is really a study in cast shadows, so work out early where the sun sits (low and to one side) because every shadow in the painting falls the same direction from there.

Sketch the chairs loosely in pencil first, since wicker is just a texture suggestion, not a pattern you need to copy stitch by stitch. Paint the table and chair frames in a warm cream, then drop in the long blue grey shadows while that first wash is still a little damp so the edges blur softly into the pavement.

If the chairs come out stiff, loosen the ink linework afterward with broken, wavy lines rather than ruled ones, which reads as wicker far better than a careful outline does. No round brush small enough for the chair backs: a fine liner pen can scribble in the woven texture instead, straight onto dry paint.

Try warming your cream mix with a touch of yellow ochre for a stronger sense of low winter sun.

Look at real bistro chairs in photographs for the leg shape before you paint; the curved backrest and crossed legs are what make them instantly read as Parisian.

Move from the terrace down to the riverbank for a green bookstall by the Seine, its boxes propped open and spilling old prints, with a cat curled asleep on top. Block in the long green stall boxes first in a flat wash, since their color anchors the whole page before anything else goes in.

Once that green is dry, suggest the prints and book spines as loose rectangles of cream, dove grey and a little rust, never anything readable: a few short pencil or ink marks are enough to say “old paper” without spelling a single word. Paint the sleeping cat last in a warm grey, a simple curled oval shape with ears and a tail tip, tucked into a gap between the boxes.

The stall often ends up looking like a flat green wall if you paint every box the same shade, so vary your green slightly box to box, darker where one overlaps another. If you do not have a green that pleases you, mix one from blue and yellow fresh each time rather than using a tube green straight, which tends to look plastic against watercolor paper.

Palette: Sap Green,Cream,Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey

Carry the warmth of that green stall into a flower shop front with zinc buckets of pink roses lined up along the pavement. This is a good subject for thinking about eye level before you pick up a brush: standing at the buckets means you look slightly down into them, while standing back across the street means the shop front itself dominates and the buckets sit low in the frame.

Choose the close view for an easier painting. Paint the buckets as simple silver grey cylinders first, then crowd the rose heads above the rims in loose blush pink dabs, letting some blooms overlap the bucket edges so nothing looks too neatly arranged. Darken the shop front behind in dove grey and a touch of green so the pink roses stay the brightest thing on the page.

If the roses turn into a pink blob, break them up with tiny gaps of white paper left unpainted between clusters, then add a few short green stem marks poking up between buckets once dry.

Palette: Blush Pink,Sap Green,Dove Grey,Payne’s Grey

Bring a figure into the city with a girl in a red beret climbing the Metro stairs into falling snow, her coat catching the last of the station light below. Pencil in her pose first as a simple tilted figure, one leg raised onto the next step, before any paint touches the page, since a wobbly stance is much harder to fix once it is wet.

Paint her coat in a flat mid tone, cream or dove grey, and save the beret for last in a confident single stroke of red: it is the one bright note in an otherwise quiet, cool painting, so keep every other color muted around it. Drop falling snow in afterward as small dots of masking fluid before you paint the background, or simply flick clean water off a dry brush onto wet paint to lift tiny pale specks once the background wash is down.

If her figure looks flat, add one shadow side down her coat in a slightly darker wash while the first layer is still a touch damp, which gives her some roundness without extra linework.

You Will Need

• masking fluid (optional, for the falling snow)

Palette: Cadmium Red,Dove Grey,Cream,Payne’s Grey

Trade the Metro stairs for a carousel with glowing bulbs turning in a park at dusk, its canopy lit from within against a darkening sky. Work the sky first in a graded wash from deep blue grey at the top to a warmer cream near the horizon, since dusk skies change color fast and that gradient has to go down while the paper is still wet and workable.

Once that dries, paint the carousel roof and horses as soft rounded shapes in cream and blush pink, keeping the whole structure loose rather than drawing every horse separately. The glowing bulbs are the trick here: leave small dots of white paper unpainted around the canopy edge, then once everything else is dry, ring each white dot with a tiny halo of gold or yellow ochre so it reads as lit rather than just blank.

If the lights look too scattered, group them more tightly along the roofline only, which reads as a stronger glow than lights spread evenly over the whole carousel.

You Will Need

• masking fluid (optional, for the light dots)

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Cream,Blush Pink,Gold Ochre

Keep that gold glow going for Christmas lights strung through bare trees all along the grand avenue at night, one of the most atmospheric scenes on this whole list. Paint the night sky and the pavement first in deep blue grey, almost black at the top of the page, then let it dry fully before adding a single thing.

Sketch the bare tree branches in thin dark lines once dry, working upward from simple trunks into forking branches, never fussing over every twig. The lights go in last and only once you are certain the background is dry: tiny dots of masking fluid before the sky wash protects the white paper underneath, or you can dab in small dots of gold gouache or a gold gel pen at the very end instead.

If this is your first time painting lights at night, start with fewer dots than feels right, since a scattering reads as lights far better than a dense cluster, which just looks like a smear of gold.

You Will Need

Return to the tower, now at night, seen sparkling from a snowy terrace across the river. This is really a lesson in where the light sits: the tower is the only true light source in an otherwise dark painting, so everything else, the terrace railing, the snow, the water, only picks up a faint reflected glow from it.

Paint the night sky and river in one deep wash of blue grey first, leaving the tower shape itself as untouched white paper, a trick that works far better here than trying to paint light onto a dark background. Once that dry wash is set, add the tower’s structure in thin grey and gold lines, then stipple tiny gold dots up its height with the tip of a brush or a gold gel pen for the sparkle.

The terrace and its snow come last in the foreground, kept simple and dark so the eye goes straight to the tower. If gold gouache feels fussy, a metallic gel pen does the same sparkle job with far less mess.

You Will Need

• gold gouache or a gold gel pen

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Ivory Black,Gold Ochre,Soft Seine Blue

Move indoors for a giant Christmas tree standing under the stained glass dome of a grand department store, one of the few interior scenes on this list. Painting glass and gold together works best if you build it in thin layers: lay a very pale wash across the whole dome shape first, let it dry, then add a second slightly darker wash only in the panel divisions to suggest the stained glass without drawing every pane.

Paint the tree itself as a tall loose cone of green dabbed with small dots of gold and cream for ornaments, working from the bottom up so the lower branches stay the darkest and fullest. The dome above should stay airy and pale compared to the tree, which keeps the eye anchored on the gifts and lights below rather than lost in the architecture.

If the dome feels too busy, simplify it to three or four large glass panels rather than a dozen small ones; the eye fills in the rest. For more tree ideas at different scales, browse this Christmas village painting list.

Bring that festive glow back outside for a small ice rink in front of the town hall on a winter night, skaters reduced to a few simple dark shapes gliding across the ice. The quick version of this scene, good for ten minutes, is just the lit building behind a flat pale blue rink with two or three tiny figure silhouettes; the forty minute version adds reflected light smears across the ice and a crowd of small lit windows across the facade.

Either way, start with the building first in warm cream and gold-lit windows against a dark sky, then paint the rink below as a cool pale blue wash, almost white, with long soft reflections of the building’s lights pulled straight down into it with a dry brush.

Skaters go in last as a handful of small dark marks, no more than a stroke or two of the brush each, scattered rather than lined up. If the ice looks dull, lift a few streaks of color out while it is still damp with a clean damp brush to suggest the shine of the surface.

Palette: Soft Seine Blue,Cream,Gold Ochre,Payne’s Grey

Step away from the lights for a quieter moment: a woman in a long cream coat walking a dachshund under a row of bare plane trees. Proportion matters most here, since a dachshund drawn even slightly too long or too short against its own legs stops reading as a dog at all; measure the body as roughly three times the height of the legs before you commit to paint.

Paint the woman’s coat first in one confident cream wash, keeping her silhouette simple and elegant rather than detailed, then add the small low dachshund shape beside her in warm brown once the coat is dry so the two shapes do not bleed together. The bare plane trees behind go in as thin dark branching lines, their distinctive mottled bark suggested with a few dabbed patches of lighter paint rather than painted in full.

If the dog looks like a brown blob, define its one visible ear and the line of its back with a single confident ink stroke once the paint is dry, which does more than any amount of extra color.

Palette: Cream,Burnt Sienna,Payne’s Grey,Dove Grey

Zoom right in for a still life moment: a cup of thick hot chocolate on a marble café table by a frosty window. Keep the light source in mind here, since the window behind the cup is the brightest part of the whole painting, which means the cup itself should stay a touch darker in tone to sit comfortably in front of it.

Paint the marble tabletop first in pale grey with a few thin darker veins dragged in with the tip of a brush while it is still damp, then add the cup in warm brown with a thick swirl of cream for the whipped top. The frosted window behind is best suggested with a dry brush dragged lightly over the paper so the white paper shows through in broken patches, which reads as frost far better than any painted pattern.

If the marble ends up flat, those veins are the fix: just two or three thin wandering lines in a slightly darker grey while the base wash is still wet.

Palette: Dove Grey,Burnt Sienna,Cream,Payne’s Grey

A dry brush technique works for both the marble veins and the frosted glass; keep a spare brush with almost no water loaded for exactly this moment.

Return to the grand landmarks with the glass pyramid of the Louvre dusted with snow at blue hour, one of the more geometric subjects on this list. Perspective is the whole trick here: the pyramid’s triangular faces only look convincing if the two visible sides lean toward a shared vanishing point just off the page, so sketch two light guide lines in pencil before you paint a single pane of glass.

Paint the blue hour sky first in a single graded wash, deep blue violet fading to a paler blue near the horizon, then let it dry completely. The pyramid’s facets go in next, each one a slightly different value of grey blue so the structure reads as glass catching light from different angles, with the palace buildings behind kept pale and soft so they recede.

Snow dusting the pyramid’s edges is simply unpainted white paper left along each sloped line; resist the urge to paint white snow on top of the glass, since watercolor white only ever comes from the paper itself.

Let the city blur a little for the gilded statues and lamps of Pont Alexandre III standing in winter mist over the river. Mist is a gift for watercolor, since it lets you get away with soft, imprecise edges everywhere except the very front of the painting, so work wet into wet for the whole bridge and background, only sharpening details on the nearest lamp or statue.

Start by wetting the paper first with clean water across the bridge and sky area, then drop in pale blue grey while it stays damp, letting the color spread and feather on its own. Once that dries, paint the nearest gilded statue or lamp post with a crisper brush and a touch of real gold paint or ochre, since this one sharp, warm shape against all that soft grey mist is what carries the whole composition.

If the wet into wet blooms too far and swallows the bridge shape, lift excess color with a thirsty dry brush before it dries, or simply accept the bloom; a little unpredictability suits mist far better than a tidy wash.

Palette: Soft Seine Blue,Dove Grey,Gold Ochre,Payne’s Grey

Climb back up to the rooftops for a cat looking out over the city from among the zinc chimney pots, a nice companion piece to the very first idea on this list. Build the rooftop planes first as flat overlapping shapes of grey and dove grey, varying the tone slightly between each roof so the eye can tell where one ends and the next begins without any heavy outlines.

Paint the chimney pots as simple cylinders standing up from the ridgelines, a shade darker than the roofs behind them, then add the cat last, sitting or standing in silhouette against the sky so its shape stays clean and simple. A single dark ink line along its back and tail, added once the paint is dry, does more to make it read as a cat than any detailed fur texture would.

If the rooftops look too similar in tone, warm one and cool another slightly, since real zinc roofs shift color with the light hitting each angle differently.

This companion piece sits well beside the city’s rooftop scenes in Christmas scene drawing ideas if you want more skyline practice.

Palette: Dove Grey,Payne’s Grey,Soft Seine Blue,Cream

Lighten the mood with green garden chairs set around a fountain pond where toy sailboats drift, a classic park scene best painted on a calmer, brighter day within this list. The pond’s surface is the real subject here: paint it as one flat wash of soft blue first, then drop in a few short horizontal strokes of a slightly darker blue while it is still wet to suggest gentle ripples without drawing every one.

The green garden chairs scattered around the rim go in next as simple geometric shapes, a few turned at angles rather than all facing the same way, which makes the scene feel more like a real afternoon than a stiff arrangement. Add the toy sailboats last as tiny white paper triangles for sails, outlined in the thinnest ink line once dry, bobbing in twos or threes rather than lined up in a row.

If the water looks static, a few dry brush strokes dragged across the surface once the base wash is dry will catch and break the light convincingly.

Palette: Soft Seine Blue,Sap Green,Cream,Payne’s Grey

Warm the palette for a couple sharing a kiss on a bridge over the Seine at sunset, letting the sky do most of the romantic work. The quick ten minute version is just two simple silhouetted figures against a warm graded sky with the bridge railing suggested in a few lines; the forty minute version adds the river below catching the sunset colors and a soft architectural shape in the distance.

Either way, paint the sky first in a graded wash running from warm gold near the horizon up into dusty pink and soft blue higher up, letting the colors bleed into each other while wet. Once dry, paint the couple as one simple merged silhouette, leaning gently together, keeping their shape soft and a touch loose rather than carefully outlined, since sharp detail here would fight with the romance of the moment.

If the figures come out stiff, round off every edge of their silhouette slightly with a damp brush before it fully dries, which softens the whole shape at once.

Palette: Gold Ochre,Blush Pink,Soft Seine Blue,Payne’s Grey

Carry the water theme forward with a glass-roofed river boat gliding beneath a lit bridge at night, its windows glowing warm against the dark river. Eye level decides everything in this one: paint from a low viewpoint, as though you are standing almost at the water’s edge, so the bridge arches high overhead and the boat sits close and large in the foreground.

Lay the night sky and river in one deep blue grey wash first, then paint the bridge arching above in a slightly darker tone once that first wash is dry, leaving a thin unpainted line where the bridge’s own lights will eventually sit. The boat itself goes in last, a long low shape with a curved glass roof suggested by a few warm gold window shapes glowing along its side, each one reflected as a short vertical smear of gold pulled down into the dark water below with a dry brush.

If the reflections look too solid, break each one with a tiny gap of untouched paper partway down, which reads as moving water rather than a mirror.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Gold Ochre,Soft Seine Blue,Ivory Black

Step into a quieter square for the red brick arcades of Place des Vosges under a fresh layer of snow. Proportion keeps this one honest: the arcade’s repeating arches need to shrink slightly and draw closer together as they recede toward one side of the page, so lightly pencil a simple perspective guide before any brick goes down.

Paint the brick facade first in a warm terracotta red, broken by the pale stone trim around each arch window, then let it dry before adding the dark arched openings beneath the arcade in one confident flat wash. Snow sits on every horizontal ledge and rooftop as simply reserved white paper, with just a thin grey shadow line painted along the underside of each snowy ledge to give it some form.

If the brick red looks too flat against the snow, warm it slightly more toward orange in the lit areas and cool it toward a dustier red in the shadowed arches, which is closer to how brick actually shifts in winter light.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cream,Dove Grey,Payne’s Grey

Trade snow for autumn gold with a girl reading on a bench in a formal garden as leaves fall around her. If this is your first time painting falling leaves, resist painting every single one in the air; three or four clear leaf shapes mid-fall say far more than a scattered confetti of tiny marks.

Paint the girl and bench first, keeping her pose simple, knees drawn up or feet tucked beneath the bench, in soft cream and dove grey, with the book itself no more than a small pale rectangle, never any readable text. The trees behind go in loosely as soft golden canopies dabbed in with a fairly dry brush so the texture stays broken and leafy rather than solid.

Falling leaves come last, each one a single confident brushstroke or a tiny dab of gold ochre, placed individually rather than sprinkled evenly, with a couple settled on the ground near her feet to anchor the scene.

If reading scenes appeal to you, there is a whole collection of them in reading painting ideas worth exploring next.

Palette: Gold Ochre,Cream,Dove Grey,Burnt Sienna

Return to the festive crowds with wooden Christmas chalets clustered beside a big Ferris wheel in a city garden at night. The quick ten minute version is just two or three simple peaked chalet roofs in a row with the wheel glowing softly behind; the forty minute version adds a crowd of tiny warm window lights across the chalet fronts and spokes of color picked out around the wheel itself.

Start with the night sky, a deep blue wash, then paint the Ferris wheel as a large pale circle of thin spokes radiating from a center point, each spoke tipped with a tiny dot of color once dry. The wooden chalets sit in front, simple triangular roofs over small cream boxes, their windows left as reserved white paper that you ring with gold once the surrounding wash is dry.

If the wheel’s spokes look uneven, draw the circle first with a plate or a compass before adding any spokes at all; a wobbly circle is far more noticeable than a few uneven spokes inside a good one.

You Will Need

• a plate or compass to trace the wheel

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Gold Ochre,Cream,Burnt Sienna

Narrow in on a small human moment: a street vendor folding a warm crêpe for a girl in mittens, steam rising between them in the cold air. Keep both figures simple and a touch stylized rather than anatomically precise, since two loosely gestured people reaching toward each other read as a moment far better than two stiffly correct ones standing apart.

Paint the vendor’s stall or cart first in a muted warm tone, then add both figures leaning slightly toward the shared crêpe between them, the vendor’s apron a flat pale shape and the girl’s coat and mittens in a warm red or rust. The steam rising from the crêpe is best left as soft unpainted gaps within a pale grey wash dabbed loosely above the pan, never a hard outlined cloud.

If the two figures feel disconnected, check that their hands or arms overlap slightly in the middle of the page; that small overlap is what ties a two-figure scene together.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cream,Cadmium Red,Dove Grey

Pull back to a wider view for a Paris apartment window glowing with a candle and a small tree inside, seen from the street at night. This interior-through-a-window subject depends entirely on contrast: the window glow needs to sit noticeably warmer and brighter than the cool dark building around it, or the whole point of the painting disappears.

Paint the building facade first in a flat cool grey, including the shutters and window frame, and let it dry fully before touching the window itself. Inside the window, paint the warm glow as a soft gradient from gold at the candle and tree toward a cooler cream at the glass edges, then add the small candle flame and a simple triangular tree shape as the very last, smallest details.

If the glow spreads too far and swallows the window frame, paint the frame’s dark edge afterward in a confident single ink line, which pulls the warm light firmly back inside its own window.

Palette: Dove Grey,Gold Ochre,Cream,Payne’s Grey

Step into a covered shopping passage with a mosaic floor and a glass roof overhead, a quieter architectural scene lit by diffused daylight. Perspective carries this whole composition: the passage’s walls and floor tiles converge toward a single point in the distance, so sketch one central vanishing point and let every line, floor tile and wall edge, aim toward it.

Paint the glass roof first in a very pale warm grey, since daylight filtered through old glass has a soft, slightly golden cast rather than pure white. The mosaic floor comes next as a loose pattern of small colored dabs, blush, cream and dove grey, never a precise repeating grid, just enough variation to suggest tiles without painting each one.

If the perspective feels off once you step back, check that the floor tiles nearest the viewer are noticeably larger than the ones receding into the distance; that size difference matters more than any ruled line.

Palette: Cream,Blush Pink,Dove Grey,Gold Ochre

Give a single figure the whole stage with a woman in a gown descending the golden grand staircase of the opera house. Her pose is the whole painting here, so sketch her first as a simple gesture line, a gentle curve from shoulder to trailing hem, before adding any fabric detail at all; a confident gesture line forgives almost anything painted on top of it.

Paint the staircase and its gilded railings first in a warm gold wash, kept loose and glowing rather than carefully architectural, then add the woman’s gown on top once that gold layer is dry so her shape reads clearly against it. Her gown works well in a single rich color, blush or a deep soft red, painted wet into wet so it pools naturally into folds without any need to draw each one.

If her figure looks too small against all that grand gold stairway, make her slightly larger than feels natural; a small figure gets swallowed by this kind of lavish setting.

Palette: Gold Ochre,Blush Pink,Cream,Payne’s Grey

Come back down to street level for a small green iron drinking fountain standing alone on a snowy Paris street. A simpler subject like this is a good one to practice the quick versus slow approach: ten minutes gets you the fountain’s basic silhouette and a flat snowy ground, while forty minutes adds the fountain’s decorative scrollwork and a soft background of buildings fading into falling snow.

Either way, paint the fountain itself first in a confident green, its basic shape no more than a column with a curved cap and a simple decorative base, before worrying about any fine ironwork at all. Snow on the ground and dusted along the fountain’s ledges stays as reserved white paper throughout, with just a thin grey shadow painted beneath the fountain’s base to ground it on the pavement.

If the green looks too bright against the snow, mute it slightly with a touch of grey mixed in, since old painted iron is rarely a clean, saturated green.

Palette: Sap Green,Dove Grey,Payne’s Grey,Cream

Shift the whole mood to spring with pink cherry blossoms framing the Eiffel Tower on a bright morning, the one warm-season scene among all this winter light. The blossoms are the extra trick here: paint them not as individual flowers but as soft clusters of blush pink dabbed in with a fairly dry brush, varying the pressure so some clusters sit denser and darker than others.

Start with the pale morning sky, a soft wash of cream and the faintest blue, then paint the tower itself in thin grey once that dries, kept smaller and further back than the blossoms in front so the flowers clearly frame it rather than compete with it. The branches carrying the blossoms go in as a few confident dark curved lines crossing the upper corners of the page, with the pink clusters painted both onto the branches and as a light scatter of loose dabs drifting across the sky nearby.

If the blossoms look too uniform, mix two slightly different pinks, one warmer and one cooler, and alternate clusters between them.

Palette: Blush Pink,Cream,Soft Seine Blue,Payne’s Grey

Bring the scene back to street life with a girl in a striped top filling her basket at an outdoor fruit market stall. Those stripes are the one thing worth measuring carefully: sketch a few evenly spaced guide lines around her torso in pencil before painting, since stripes that drift wider or narrower as they wrap the body are the fastest way to flatten a figure that should feel rounded.

Paint her striped top first with the stripes following the curve of her shoulders and arms, then add her basket and the piles of fruit on the stall behind in warm clusters of red, orange and green, each pile just a loose mass of color rather than individually painted pieces of fruit. Keep the stall’s background simple and a touch blurred so her striped top and the bright fruit stay the clear focus of the page.

If the fruit piles look like flat blobs, drop one or two slightly darker dabs into each pile while the first wash is still damp to suggest shadow between individual pieces without painting every single one.

Palette: Cadmium Red,Sap Green,Gold Ochre,Cream

Return to the festive windows for a department store display of dancing teddy bears, a small child standing transfixed in front of the glass. Once this one is working, think about variation next time: the same composition with the window changed to a toy train set, a winter forest scene, or dancing dolls gives you a whole second painting from one same setup.

Paint the window glass first as one pale cool wash, almost a frame, then add the bears inside in warm cream and rust, posed mid-dance with arms raised or legs kicked out, kept playful and a little exaggerated rather than carefully anatomical. The child watching goes in last, outside the glass, as a small simple silhouette in a coat and hat, close enough to the window that her shape slightly overlaps its lower edge.

If the glass looks too solid rather than transparent, add one or two faint streaks of reflected light diagonally across it with a dry brush once everything else is dry, which instantly reads as glass. For more window scenes, this collection of Christmas window drawing ideas runs from Paris shop fronts to cozy home windows.

Palette: Burnt Sienna,Cream,Dove Grey,Cadmium Red

Give the couple on the earlier bridge a companion scene: a couple waltzing on the riverbank at twilight in falling snow. The two dancing figures depend on one simple gesture: sketch their combined silhouette as one continuous flowing curve from her raised hand down through both bodies to the floor, rather than drawing two separate people standing near each other.

Paint the twilight sky and river first in a deep blue violet wash, then once dry, paint the dancing couple as one connected silhouette in a slightly warmer dark tone so they stand out clearly against the cool background. Snow falling around them is added last as small flicked dots of clean water lifted from the wet paint, or simple tiny unpainted gaps if the background has already dried.

If the couple’s shape reads as two separate blobs rather than one dance, check that an arm or a hand physically connects the two silhouettes somewhere in the middle; that single connecting line makes all the difference.

Palette: Soft Seine Blue,Payne’s Grey,Ivory Black,Cream

Close the list with a calmer morning scene: a breakfast tray of café au lait set on a hotel balcony facing the Eiffel Tower in the distance. This still life works best read as two separate distances at once, so paint the tower itself small, pale and slightly blurred far in the background first, before anything in the foreground goes down.

Once that background wash is dry, paint the tray and its cup in crisp, warm detail close up, cream coffee cup, a pale croissant, a small vase perhaps, using sharper edges and stronger color than anything used for the distant tower. That contrast between a soft background and a crisp foreground is what gives the whole painting its sense of depth without any complicated perspective drawing at all.

If the tower keeps pulling too much attention away from the breakfast tray, mute its color further toward grey and soften its edges even more with a damp brush; distance should always look a little hazier and cooler than anything close to you.

What to Do Next

Pick one scene that matches tonight’s mood, whether that is the quiet hot chocolate still life or the full glow of Christmas lights down the avenue, and start with a pale cold press watercolor page large enough to let the wash move. Keep your palette narrow, let each layer dry before the next, and leave the white paper alone wherever snow or light needs to shine through.

Frequently Asked Questions

What colors work best for a paris aesthetic drawing in watercolor?

A narrow palette of blush pink, dove grey, soft blue and cream, with a touch of gold, keeps every scene feeling cohesive. Limiting your colors stops any single painting from looking busy or overworked, which suits this soft, romantic style.

Do I need to draw the Eiffel Tower perfectly accurate for these ideas to work?

No, a loose, slightly simplified tower reads perfectly well in a soft watercolor scene. Focus on getting the two main leg angles and the general taper right, and let the fine ironwork stay suggested rather than exact.

How do I keep Christmas lights or window glow looking soft instead of flat?

Leave small dots or gaps of white paper unpainted before the surrounding wash goes down, then add a touch of gold around each one once it is dry. Painting bright color directly onto a dark background almost always looks pasted on rather than glowing.

Can I paint these Paris scenes without any reference photos of the real landmarks?

A quick look at reference photos for structures like the Louvre pyramid or Pont Alexandre III helps with proportion, but every scene in this list is meant to stay loose and impressionistic rather than architecturally exact.

What is the easiest idea on this list for a first attempt at Paris watercolor scenes?

The wicker café chairs or the hot chocolate still life make the gentlest starting points, since both rely on simple shapes and a limited palette rather than figures or complicated landmarks.
