Llama drawing is the kind of project that turns a kitchen table into a little art studio, especially when you and your child grab markers and start together. Llamas have so much personality in their long faces and fuzzy ears that even a wobbly first attempt looks charming, and that makes them perfect for drawing side by side without anyone worrying about getting it perfect.
Below you will find 27 llama and alpaca scenes, from pom-pom ears and flower crowns to Andean villages and Machu Picchu ruins. Each one has a simple way in for little hands and a small extra for the grown-up to add, so you can both finish something you are proud of today.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start with the easiest llama on this whole list: a simple fuzzy face with bright pom-poms tied to its ears. Draw two long rounded ears first with the fineliner, then a soft oval snout underneath, and finish the outline before any color goes down. Kids can keep the head basic, two dot eyes, a smiling mouth, and round pom-pom shapes at the ear tips.
Color the wool in cream marker first, then let an adult add caramel strokes along the jaw for shading while the cream is still your base. The pom-poms are the fun part: pick two colors per ear, Peruvian pink and turquoise work well against the cream wool, and color them solid so they pop.
If the ears come out too thin and spindly, just make them wider and rounder, llama ears are naturally soft banana shapes, not pointy triangles. No alcohol markers on hand? Regular bright felt tips give nearly the same punchy color for this one.
Keep the face simple and let the pom-poms carry all the personality.

Build this one as a side profile walking along a sloped path, which is a gentler shape to copy than a straight-on llama. Draw the body as a long rounded rectangle, add the neck curving up to the head, then four simple legs standing on a diagonal line that becomes your mountain path.
For proportion, use the head as your measuring unit: the body should be about three head-lengths long and the neck about one head-length tall. This one trick keeps young artists from drawing a llama that looks too short and dog-like.
Once the outline is set, color the woven blanket across the back first in bands of orange, pink and turquoise, since striped Peruvian textile patterns are the easiest part for kids to enjoy. An adult can add shadow to the mountain path and distant hills in cool grey-blue behind the llama.
If the stripes run crooked, straighten them with a ruler line in pencil before inking the final version.

Move from one llama to two now that the basic shape feels comfortable. Draw the mother llama first, standing with her head turned gently down, then tuck the baby’s smaller body against her front legs with its head resting near her neck. Keep the baby about half the mother’s height.
Light matters here: imagine a soft light coming from one side so you can shade the far side of each body a touch darker with caramel marker, which makes the cuddle feel rounded instead of flat. The mother’s wool can stay a richer caramel while the baby stays pale cream, which also helps tell them apart at a glance.
The spot kids struggle with is where the two bodies overlap, so draw the mother completely first, then draw the baby’s outline right on top of her, erasing the hidden line underneath. If markers bleed through thin paper, slip a scrap sheet behind the page.
Finish with tiny pink blush dots on both cheeks for warmth.
Palette: Caramel,Cream,Soft Pink,Warm Brown
Look at real alpaca or llama photos online for how a baby tucks its legs under the mother, it reads much more convincing than a guess.
Circle back to a single face for this one, but dress it up. Sketch the familiar long-eared llama face, then draw a simple crown shape across the top of the head: a curved band with five or six flowers sitting on it, each flower just a small circle with five petal bumps around it.
Color the flowers in a mix of pink, orange and a little turquoise for variety, with tiny yellow centers. The llama’s face stays cream and caramel as usual, which makes the bright flower colors stand out even more against it.
The crown often goes wrong when the flowers get too small and fiddly for marker tips, so draw them bigger than feels natural, at least the size of a fingernail each. If you do not have a turquoise marker, swap in a cool green, it reads just as fresh against the warm wool.
Add a few short leaf shapes between the flowers so the crown does not look like floating dots.
Palette: Cream,Peruvian Pink,Burnt Orange,Leaf Green
Here the fence does half the work for you, so this is a nice confidence builder. Draw a simple horizontal fence first, two or three wooden planks in a row, then add the llama’s head and neck poking up just above the top plank, as if it is curious about what is going on.
Draw the fence slightly lower than you think you need to, since beginners tend to hide too much of the llama’s face behind it. Only the neck and head should show, with maybe the very tips of the ears reaching above the top rail.
Color the planks in warm brown with a few darker lines for wood grain, which an adult can add quickly with a fine brown marker tip. The llama’s expression is everything here, so give it big curious eyes and ears pointed slightly forward.
If the fence lines wobble, that is fine, hand-drawn wood always looks a little rustic anyway.
Palette: Warm Brown,Cream,Caramel,Dark Brown
This scene turns the llama into part of a cozy still life, sitting or standing among a cluster of potted plants. Draw the llama’s body first, settled comfortably, then place two or three simple terracotta pots around its feet, each with a different succulent shape: a rosette, a tall spiky one, and a round trailing one.
Work in layers from back to front: llama body and legs, then pots, then the succulent shapes on top so they sit convincingly in front of the legs. Ten minutes gets you the llama and one pot in flat color; the forty-minute version adds two more pots and a bit of texture on each succulent with short marker strokes radiating out from the center.
Terracotta pots go orange-brown, and the succulents can mix sage green with a touch of dusty pink at the tips, which pairs beautifully with the llama’s cream wool. If the pots come out lopsided, a quick oval at the rim fixes the proportion instantly.
Group everything a little closer together than feels natural, it reads much cozier.
Palette: Cream,Terracotta,Sage Green,Dusty Pink
This is the first bigger scene on the list, so give yourself the full sitting for it. Draw the llama mid-step on a path, then add two woven baskets slung over its back, one on each side, each basket just a rounded rectangle with a woven pattern of short crossing lines.
Behind the llama, sketch two or three simple village rooftops with a mountain silhouette, keeping the buildings small and the llama large in the foreground so it stays the clear subject. Comparing sizes as you draw, the llama’s head should be noticeably bigger than any single rooftop behind it.
Color the baskets in warm orange and pink with simple woven lines in a darker shade, then keep the background buildings in muted terracotta and grey so they do not compete with the llama. If the whole scene feels crowded, erase one rooftop, two buildings is plenty to suggest a village.
This pairs nicely with other village scene drawing ideas if you want to practice backgrounds further.
Palette: Caramel,Burnt Orange,Terracotta,Slate Blue
Expression is the whole point of this one, so slow down on the face before touching the body. Draw the head turned slightly to one side, then place both eyes looking sideways toward the same corner, half-lidded, with the mouth pressed into a flat unimpressed line rather than a smile.
Eyebrows make or break sass: add two short straight lines angled down toward the nose just above the eyes, which instantly reads as attitude on any animal face. Kids can draw the basic sideways glance; an adult can refine the eyebrow angle and add a tiny raised eyebrow on one side for extra personality.
The common mistake is centering both pupils, which just looks surprised instead of sassy, so push the pupils firmly toward one corner of each eye. Keep the rest of the llama relaxed and simple, cream wool, caramel ears, nothing fussy, so all the attention lands on that face.
A single raised eyebrow sells the whole joke better than any other detail.
Palette: Cream,Caramel,Warm Brown
Give the llama a little vacation for this one. Draw the head and shoulders first, then add round or wayfarer-style sunglasses across the eyes, which is just two connected shapes with a bridge line between them, easier than drawing separate eyes underneath.
Behind the llama, keep the beach simple: a flat horizon line dividing turquoise sea from pale sky, with two or three wavy lines near the shore for surf. The llama can even wear a tiny printed shirt collar in pink and orange stripes if you want to push the silly factor further.
Color the sunglasses lenses in a dark warm brown or black with a small white highlight dot in the corner of each lens, which makes them look glossy. If the lenses come out uneven, draw a light pencil oval guide for both at once before inking over them.
Swap the shirt for a simple sun hat if stripes feel fiddly today.
Palette: Cream,Turquoise,Burnt Orange,Dark Brown
This tender little scene asks for two matching heads facing each other, noses almost meeting in the middle. Draw one head completely first, then flip your approach and draw the second head as a mirror image, same size, same ear angle, just facing the opposite direction, so the composition stays balanced.
Keep both llamas close enough that their noses nearly touch but leave a tiny gap, since noses actually overlapping gets confusing to ink cleanly. Vary the wool color slightly between the two, one cream, one a touch more caramel, so they read as two individuals rather than a reflection.
Half-closed, gentle eyes on both faces sell the affection better than wide-open ones. If the two heads end up uneven in size, measure the first head’s height with your fingers against the paper and match the second to it before you ink.
A faint pink heart floating between the noses is an easy, sweet finishing touch for younger artists.
Palette: Cream,Caramel,Soft Pink
Llamas resting on the ground fold their legs underneath them into a neat rounded loaf shape, which is actually simpler to draw than a standing llama since there are no legs to wrestle with. Start with one large rounded oval for the whole body, then add the neck and head rising up from the front of it.
Tuck small hints of folded legs along the bottom edge with a few short curved lines, just enough to suggest they are there without drawing full limbs. Scatter short upward strokes of green around the base for grass, keeping them loose and varied in height so it does not look like a row of soldiers.
The shape sometimes ends up too round and blob-like, so pull the front slightly forward into a gentle point where the chest would be, which gives the loaf its proper shape. If green markers run low, a single sage tone for all the grass still reads fine.
This is a genuinely relaxing one to color in slowly.
Palette: Cream,Caramel,Sage Green
Switch to an alpaca now for a genuinely funny subject: the skinny, almost comic body shape right after shearing, with just a fluffy topknot and leg tufts left untouched. Draw the body much narrower and straighter than the fluffy llamas before it, almost like a smooth tube, then leave a round pom of fur sitting right on top of the head.
The surprised expression is the whole joke, so draw the eyes wide and round with the mouth open in a small oval, as if mid-gasp. Leave small fluffy cuffs of wool around each ankle, since real sheared alpacas often keep those, and it reads instantly as funny and recognizable.
Beginners sometimes shade the whole body like a fluffy llama out of habit, so remind yourself the skin here is smooth, almost like a stocking, colored in flat pale pink-grey rather than textured cream. If pink-grey is not in your set, a very pale tan works too.
Keep the topknot the biggest, fluffiest shape on the page for contrast.
Palette: Pale Pink-Grey,Cream,Caramel
Search photos of freshly sheared alpacas before drawing this one, the real body shape is funnier than most people expect and worth seeing first.
Give the llama a simple farmyard job for this scene. Draw the head lowered and tilted slightly into a wooden hay rack, a basic angled frame of crossed lines, with loose strands of hay sticking out in several directions from inside it.
Work the head and neck first, bent down at a believable angle, since this is the part beginners rush and end up with a neck that looks broken rather than bowed. Then build the hay rack around where the mouth meets it, letting a few hay strands overlap the llama’s chin so it looks like it is actually mid-bite.
Color the hay in warm yellow-gold with a few darker gold strokes for shadow between the strands, and keep the rack itself in the same warm brown as other wooden elements on this list. If yellow markers feel too pale against cream wool, outline the hay strands in brown first so they stand out clearly.
A few loose hay bits scattered on the ground finish the scene without extra effort.
Palette: Cream,Warm Brown,Golden Yellow
This is the most ambitious scene on the list, so treat it as the forty-minute project of the set. Place the llama standing proudly in the foreground, large and detailed, then sketch the famous stepped stone terraces and a few low stone walls behind it, getting smaller as they recede toward a soft mountain silhouette.
Eye level matters here: draw the horizon line roughly a third of the way up the page and keep the llama’s feet planted right near it, with the terraces rising above and the sky filling the top third, which instantly gives the scene depth. Light from one side lets you shade one side of the stone walls darker green-grey while the other catches warm sunlight in pale gold.
Ten minutes gets you the llama alone with a rough hill behind it; the full version adds the terraced lines and a hint of cloud around the peaks. If the stonework feels too detailed to draw, simplify it to simple horizontal step lines, the suggestion of terraces reads just as well as every individual stone.
Keep the llama’s outline the darkest line on the page so it stays the star against all that scenery.
Palette: Caramel,Stone Grey,Golden Yellow,Slate Blue
Bring the celebration energy back after that bigger landscape scene. Draw the llama sitting or standing, then add a simple cone-shaped party hat strapped under its chin with a thin elastic line, and a small round cake on a stand beside it with two or three candles on top.
Build the cake in layers: a flat base oval, a rounded tier on top, then a scalloped icing line between them in a contrasting color, which is a satisfying pattern for kids to repeat around the whole edge. The party hat gets a bright pom-pom on its tip to match the pom-pom theme from earlier ideas.
If the hat looks too stiff and triangular, round off its tip slightly and curve the side lines a touch, since real paper party hats are never perfectly straight. No pom-pom shape handy? A simple dot of color on the tip reads fine too.
Scatter a few small confetti dots around the whole scene to finish the party mood.
Palette: Cream,Peruvian Pink,Turquoise,Burnt Orange
Rest the energy for a moment with a quiet sleeping llama. Draw the body folded low in the loaf position again, but this time close the eyes completely with two simple curved lash lines and tilt the head down to rest near the front legs, which reads instantly as deep sleep.
Surround the body with a loose meadow of grass blades and a few small wildflowers dotted at different heights, keeping everything soft and low so the llama still reads as the biggest, calmest shape on the page. A faint cluster of z shapes floating above the head is a playful, obvious way for kids to show sleep without needing any subtlety.
The mistake here is drawing the ears alert and upright, which fights the sleepy mood, so droop them gently to the sides instead. If you want an easier version for a very young artist, skip the meadow entirely and just draw the sleeping llama shape alone on plain paper.
Pale lavender-grey shadow under the body grounds it nicely in the grass.
Palette: Cream,Sage Green,Lavender Grey
Here is a fun texture challenge after all that smooth coloring. Draw the llama’s basic shape as usual, but instead of a smooth outline around the body, make the edge bumpy and jagged all over, like a cloud made of little tufts, to show fur standing up and fluffed by rain.
Add straight diagonal rain lines falling across the whole scene in a cool light blue, and a few small puddle shapes at the feet with simple ripple lines inside them. The jagged fur edge is the hands-on trick here: go over it a second time with short dash marks just inside the outline in caramel, which breaks up the flat color and really sells the damp, puffed-up texture.
If the fluffy edge looks too spiky and aggressive, round off the tips of each bump slightly, soft fluff still has rounded points, not sharp ones. No light blue marker available? Thin grey lines for rain work just as well against cream paper.
Give the llama a slightly grumpy, squinting expression since no animal loves getting rained on.
Palette: Cream,Caramel,Light Blue
Keep the mood gentle with this small, quiet moment. Draw the llama’s head in profile or three-quarter view with a calm, relaxed expression, then add a single butterfly perched right on the tip of its nose, wings spread flat and symmetrical.
Build the butterfly as two matching wing shapes on each side of a thin body line, then decorate both wings with the exact same small pattern, since real butterfly wings mirror each other and that symmetry is what makes it convincing. Orange and turquoise together make a striking little butterfly against cream wool.
The llama’s eyes should look slightly crossed or downward, aimed at its own nose, which is a small detail that makes the moment read as genuinely funny and sweet rather than static. If symmetrical wing patterns feel tricky, keep the pattern to one simple shape repeated twice, a single dot or stripe on each wing is enough.
This one rewards taking your time on just the butterfly, since it is the smallest shape carrying the biggest charm.
Palette: Cream,Caramel,Burnt Orange,Turquoise
Return to a full scene with a llama standing among tall red poppies. Draw the llama first, standing calm and upright, then fill the ground around its legs with simple poppy shapes: four rounded petals around a dark center, repeated at different heights and sizes so the field feels full without being crowded.
Work the poppies in loose clusters rather than an even grid, since real wildflower fields grow in uneven patches, with some poppies partly overlapping the llama’s lower legs to tie it into the scene. Keep a soft green wash behind and between the flowers for stems and grass.
If the poppies start looking like simple circles rather than flowers, notch each petal slightly at the outer edge, which instantly reads as a poppy’s slightly ruffled shape. Only have orange on hand instead of true red. That works fine too, poppies come in both.
Leave a little open cream paper between flower clusters so the whole field does not turn into one solid red mass.
Palette: Cream,Poppy Red,Sage Green,Dark Brown
Give the llama a small job again, this time pulling a cute little wooden cart loaded with flowers. Draw the llama mid-step first, then attach two simple cart wheels and a flat cart bed behind it, connected by a thin harness line looped gently around the llama’s chest, never tight or constricting.
Fill the cart bed with a loose bunch of simple flower shapes in mixed colors, taller stems toward the back and shorter blooms spilling slightly over the front edge, which gives the load a nice sense of abundance. The wheels are the trickiest part proportionally, so measure them against the llama’s leg height, each wheel should sit roughly knee-high on the llama for the cart to look properly sized.
If the harness line looks confusing where it crosses the body, simplify it to a single curved strap rather than multiple crossing lines. A basket shape instead of a full cart works as an easy swap if wheels feel like too much today.
Bright mixed flowers against the plain wooden cart keep the whole scene cheerful.
Palette: Cream,Warm Brown,Peruvian Pink,Golden Yellow
This silly, gentle idea pairs well with the sassy llama earlier for a nice contrast in expression. Draw the head calm and still, almost frozen in place, then nestle a simple round woven nest right between the ears, with two or three tiny oval eggs inside and maybe one small bird perched on the rim.
Build the nest as a rough circle of short overlapping curved lines, like a loose scribble of twigs rather than a smooth shape, since real nests are pleasantly messy. Perspective-wise, draw the nest slightly tilted toward the viewer so you can see down into it and spot the eggs, rather than drawing it flat from the side where they would be hidden.
The llama’s expression should stay perfectly patient and unbothered, eyes calm, ears relaxed to the sides, which is what makes the joke land. If a tiny bird feels too fiddly to add, the nest and eggs alone still tell the whole story just fine.
Soft blue eggs against the brown twig nest look especially sweet against cream wool.
Palette: Cream,Warm Brown,Soft Blue
After the calm nest scene, let loose with the goofiest face on the whole list. Draw the mouth wide open in a crooked oval, teeth showing in a simple zigzag line, with the tongue lolling slightly to one side, and cross the eyes or make one bigger than the other for extra chaos.
Ears are great tools for comedy here, so draw one ear flopped sideways and the other standing straight up, which reads as instantly more playful than two matching, neat ears. Kids usually love pushing this face as far as it can go, and that enthusiasm is exactly right for this subject.
If the open mouth ends up looking scary rather than silly, round off the teeth shapes and add a small pink tongue, softness tips it back toward funny. No pink marker for the tongue. A warm red works just as well in a pinch.
This is a genuinely good one to let a child design entirely on their own.
Palette: Cream,Caramel,Soft Pink
Bring in some color theory with this bright, simple scene. Draw the llama standing in a relaxed pose first, then arc a rainbow across the upper half of the page behind it, keeping the bands in the same order every time, red through to purple, so it reads correctly at a glance.
Leave thin white gaps of paper between each rainbow band rather than letting the colors touch directly, which keeps the stripes crisp instead of muddy when markers are blended edge to edge. Light here comes from behind the rainbow, so you can add a soft glow of pale yellow just around its arc before the other colors go on.
If blending seven colors feels like too much today, a simplified three-band rainbow of pink, orange and turquoise still looks cheerful and ties nicely into the rest of this article’s palette. Small fluffy cloud shapes at each end of the arc finish the sky.
Keep the llama’s own colors fairly plain so the rainbow stays the star of this one.
Palette: Peruvian Pink,Burnt Orange,Turquoise,Cream
This quieter landscape pairs a calm llama with a reflective lake and snow-capped mountains behind it. Draw the llama standing near the shoreline first, then add the lake as a simple flat shape in front of it, and sketch jagged mountain peaks with white snowy tips rising behind.
The reflective trick here is simple: draw the mountains once normally, then draw a softer, slightly wavy mirror version of the same peaks just below the shoreline inside the lake shape, using the same colors but a touch lighter. That single reflection instantly makes the water read as calm and glassy.
Keep the snowy peaks white by leaving the paper bare there and only coloring the rock below them in grey-blue, since trying to color white snow usually just muddies it. If blending a reflection feels tricky, a few simple horizontal wavy lines across the lake alone still suggest water convincingly.
A single pale cream llama against all that cool blue and white makes a lovely calm finishing scene.
Palette: Cream,Slate Blue,Stone Grey,Light Blue
Bring back the party mood with this cozy evening scene. Draw the llama standing or sitting, then wind a single loose string across its body in a gentle wavy line from shoulder to tail, adding small round bulb shapes evenly spaced along that line.
Color each bulb a different bright color in turn, cycling through pink, orange and turquoise so no two bulbs next to each other match, which makes the string feel properly festive rather than repetitive. A small soft glow dot of pale yellow just around each bulb, applied lightly, suggests they are lit up in the dusk.
If the wavy string line ends up too tight and fussy against the wool, loosen the curve so it drapes more naturally, like a real string of lights actually would. Darkening the background slightly behind the llama, a deep blue-grey dusk, makes the lit bulbs pop far more than leaving the page plain white.
This one is a satisfying last festive scene to end an evening drawing session on.
Palette: Cream,Peruvian Pink,Turquoise,Deep Blue Grey
For a very small, very sweet subject, draw a baby alpaca curled up inside a round woven basket, legs tucked completely out of sight. Start with the basket as a simple wide oval with short vertical weave lines around its side, then nestle the alpaca’s rounded body right inside it, head resting on the rim.
Keep the alpaca noticeably smaller than any adult llama on this list, since the whole charm here is how tiny and cozy it looks folded into something as small as a basket. A soft blanket draped over one edge of the basket, just a simple folded fabric shape in a warm color, adds a lived-in, loved touch.
If the alpaca’s body overflows the basket awkwardly, draw the basket slightly larger than feels necessary first, it is easier to shrink the alpaca to fit than to stretch a basket after the fact. A small bow tied to the basket handle is an easy, sweet extra for a child to add last.
Fluffy cream fur against the warm brown basket weave makes a gentle, simple finish.
Palette: Cream,Warm Brown,Soft Pink
End the set with the warmest scene of all: a girl and a llama walking together, as a nice last project to draw side by side with your own child. Draw the llama first, standing or mid-step, then add a simple girl figure beside it, holding a loose lead rope that connects to the llama’s neck with a gentle curve, never pulled taut.
Keep the girl’s figure simple, an oval head, a basic dress or jumper shape, stick-simple arms and legs, since the llama should still carry most of the visual interest. Match their pace by drawing both figures mid-step, one leg forward on each, which makes the whole pair feel like they are actually moving together rather than standing stiffly side by side.
If the two figures end up oddly sized next to each other, the girl’s head should sit roughly level with the llama’s shoulder, not its full height, which keeps the proportions believable. For another warm pairing of a child and an animal, the dog pencil drawing ideas make a nice companion project, and the hug drawing list has more ideas built entirely around this kind of closeness.
Finish with warm, simple colors on the girl’s outfit so she complements the llama’s wool rather than competing with it.
Palette: Cream,Caramel,Peruvian Pink,Warm Brown
What to Do Next
Pick whichever llama caught your eye first, pom-pom ears and the flower crown are the friendliest places to begin, and grab a plain sheet of smooth marker paper to start on. Work through a few more together over the week, the sillier scenes make a nice reward once the simpler faces feel comfortable.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the easiest way to start a llama drawing for a beginner?
Start with the head and long ears before the body. Getting the ears right first makes everything else, the face, the neck, the legs, fall into proportion naturally around it.
What markers work best for a llama drawing like these?
Alcohol-based markers blend smoothly for soft wool shading, but regular felt tip or washable markers give nearly the same bright result for a child drawing at home.
How do you make a llama look different from an alpaca in a drawing?
Llamas have longer, banana-shaped ears and a longer face, while alpacas have shorter, spear-shaped ears and a fluffier, rounder face overall, especially before shearing.
How can kids and adults draw a llama together without one person taking over?
Split the job by step: the child draws the outline and main shapes in pencil, then the adult adds one small extra detail, a shadow, a pattern, a background touch, after inking.
Why does my llama drawing look too much like a sheep or a dog?
The proportions are usually off. Llamas need a long neck, a body about three head-lengths long, and tall banana-shaped ears, all of which separate them clearly from a shorter, round-eared sheep.
