A one line drawing is the most forgiving kind of sketch you can start today: one pen, one breath, one shape that never lifts off the paper. There is something quietly satisfying about letting your hand wander across a face or a flower without a single pause, and the soft color blob tucked behind the line is what turns a doodle into something you want to pin to the wall.
Below you will find 28 subjects to try, from a simple profile to a full mother and baby scene, moving from the easiest loops to the ones that ask for a little more patience with your line. Pick whichever one catches your eye first and give yourself permission to wobble: the charm of this style is in the slightly uneven curve, not in perfect control.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start here because a profile is just one curving line from forehead to chin, which makes it the kindest warm up for one line drawing. Before you touch the fineliner, pencil two faint dots in the air with your finger: one for the brow, one for the chin, so your hand knows roughly how tall the face will be.
Draw the forehead curve down into the nose, pause the pen only in your head (never on paper), let it dip for the lips and sweep out for the chin and jaw, then loop up and over for the hair in one continuous pass. Most profiles go wrong at the nose, where a hard angle makes the face look pinched: keep that bump soft and rounded instead.
Add a blush colored circle behind the head before or after the line, whichever order feels calmer for you. If your pen catches and the line breaks, just lift the pen, reset at the same spot, and keep going: nobody will spot the join once the blob is in place.
Work slowly on this first one, since the pace you set here carries through the rest of the list.
Palette: Blush Pink,Carbon Black
Practice the profile three or four times on scrap paper first. The line gets more confident each time, and you will know exactly where it wants to wobble before you commit to the good sheet.
Move from faces to a cat curled into a sleeping spiral, a shape that loves the one line technique because cats fold into circles so naturally. Picture the whole cat as one soft donut shape before you start: the line will trace an ear, down the back, around the tail, and back up to tuck under the chin.
Begin at an ear tip, curve down the head and spine, round out the haunch, and let the tail sweep back across the body to finish near the nose. The spot this goes wrong is the tail crossing the body, which can look tangled if you rush it: slow the pen right down for that single crossing stroke.
If your fineliner skips on that crossing line, a slightly thicker nib than usual actually hides the stumble better than a fine one does. Drop a sage green blob behind the curled shape once the line is dry.

Carry the quiet mood forward into a hand holding a flower, one of the most popular one line drawing subjects because the fingers and the petals share the same gentle rhythm. Look at your own hand loosely curled, thumb tucked near the first finger, before you start: that reference stops the fingers from coming out too long or too even.
Draw the wrist and palm first, let the line climb up each finger and back down into the gaps, then flow straight into the stem and loop out into three or four petal shapes without a break. The weak point is usually finger length, since beginners draw them all the same size: vary them slightly, the middle finger just a touch longer than the rest.
If the flower end gets cramped, simplify it to one open blossom shape rather than several petals, it reads just as well at this scale. Rest an ochre blob behind the whole hand and flower once the ink is dry.
If you enjoy pairing a simple subject with soft color, the ideas in this skincare drawing roundup use a similar calm, minimal palette.

Switch to something smaller and sillier after the hand: a latte with a heart drawn into the foam. This is one of the fastest subjects on the list, so it is a good one to reach for when you only have a few minutes.
Start at the rim of the cup, trace down one side, curve under the base, back up the other side, then let the line rise into the saucer and handle in one sweep before finishing with a tiny heart shape sitting inside the cup. Beginners often make the cup too narrow and tall, which looks more like a vase: widen the rim so it reads clearly as a mug.
In ten minutes you get the cup, handle and heart. Give yourself forty and you can add a thin steam line curling up from the top, still without lifting the pen if you plan the path first.
Place a blush blob behind the whole cup, slightly larger than the drawing itself so it reads as warmth rather than a hard edge.
Palette: Blush Pink,Carbon Black
Build on the softness of the latte with a quieter, more tender subject: a mother holding her baby close. This one carries more emotional weight than the others so far, and the single line suits it well because there is no room for fuss.
Eye level matters here more than usual: draw the mother’s head tilted slightly down toward the baby, since that angle alone tells the whole story before you add a single other detail. Start at her hairline, follow the curve of her face and shoulder, sweep down into her arms cradling the baby’s small round head, then back up to close near where you began.
The place this goes wrong is the baby looking too large, which makes the pose feel awkward. Keep the baby’s head roughly a third the size of the mother’s to keep the scale tender rather than strange.
Sit a sage colored blob behind the pair once the line is finished. If you draw this twice, try tilting the mother’s head the other way the second time for variety.
Palette: Sage Green,Carbon Black
Rest your hand with something simpler next: a single tulip standing in a narrow vase. The whole drawing is really just two shapes joined by one stem, which makes it an easy subject to get right on the first try.
Begin at the vase base, trace up one side and down the other to form the narrow neck, then let the line continue straight up into the stem and curl out into the closed tulip bud at the top. Many first attempts make the vase too wide at the neck, which throws off the whole proportion: keep the neck narrower than the base by about half.
If the tulip head feels fiddly, simplify it to one smooth rounded bump rather than separate petal points, it still reads clearly as a tulip. Tuck an ochre blob behind the vase so it glows gently against the white page.
No fineliner on hand? A fine gel pen in black works just as well for this one, since the line stays thin and even throughout.

Pick up the pace with a dancer caught mid-twirl, her skirt flaring out to one side. Movement is the whole point of this subject, so let your hand move faster and looser than it did for the earlier faces.
Picture the body as a gentle S-curve leaning into the turn: start at the top of her head, run the line down through one raised arm, dip into the waist, and let it swing wide out into the flared skirt before curling back up through the other arm. The twirl looks stiff if the skirt is too small, so exaggerate the flare further out from the body than feels natural at first.
If the line tangles where the arms cross near the head, simplify to one arm raised and one resting rather than both lifted, it keeps the pose readable at this small scale. Set a blush blob slightly off center behind her, in the direction the skirt flares, to echo the motion.
Palette: Blush Pink,Carbon Black
Narrow the focus right down to two hands forming a heart shape together. This one rewards a slower, more deliberate line than the dancer did, since the fingers need to read clearly even though nothing else is in the frame.
Start at one wrist, trace up through the fingers as they curve inward and meet at the top point of the heart, then continue the line down into the second hand and out to its wrist without lifting the pen. Compare the two hands as you go: they should mirror each other in size, since mismatched hands are the most common slip with this subject.
If the heart point gets lost where the fingertips meet, leave a tiny visible gap there rather than forcing a perfect join, it actually reads as more natural. Place a sage blob directly behind the heart shape so the color peeks through the gap between the hands.
Try this one as a gift sketch too, since it pairs well with other small drawings for a friend, like the ones in this BFF drawing ideas list.

Take on a bicycle next, a subject built almost entirely of circles and straight lines, which sounds tricky for one line drawing but is actually quite forgiving once you plan your route. Trace the shape in the air first: front wheel, up to the seat, down to the pedals, back to the rear wheel, and up through the handlebars.
Draw one wheel as a full loop, let the line rise into the frame, down to the pedal, across to the second wheel, and finish by sweeping up into the handlebars in one pass. Wheels drawn unevenly are the usual stumble here: glance at the first wheel before drawing the second so they end up roughly the same size.
If your circles come out lopsided, lightly trace around a coin or bottle cap in pencil first, then ink over that guide freehand. A sage colored blob sitting low behind the bike grounds the whole drawing nicely.
Palette: Sage Green,Carbon Black
Return to a face for this one, but add a wide brimmed hat to keep things interesting after the bicycle’s straight lines. The hat brim is the trickiest curve in this whole list, so it earns its own close attention.
Start at the crown of the hat, let the line sweep down and out for the brim, back in to meet the face, trace the profile down through the nose and chin, then rise back up through the hair to close near the hat. Eye level decides how this reads: tilt the whole face slightly upward and the hat brim will naturally sit at a jaunty, flattering angle rather than flat and dull.
If the brim comes out too narrow, widen it further than feels right, a generous brim is what sells this silhouette. An ochre blob behind her, peeking out past the hat edge, finishes the look warmly.
Palette: Ochre Yellow,Carbon Black
Bring in a sitting dog next, ears up and tail curled neatly around its paws. Compare the head to the body before you start, since a dog sitting upright has a head roughly a third the height of its whole seated shape, and getting that ratio right is what keeps the pose convincing.
Begin at one ear, trace down the face, out along the back, curve into the haunches, and let the line sweep forward into the front paws and tail wrap in one continuous pass. The tail is where lines usually snag, so keep that final curl loose and slightly open rather than closing it tightly against the body.
If the ears come out lopsided, one rounder than the other is fine for a floppy eared breed, it just adds charm. Drop a blush blob behind the dog’s whole seated shape to finish it off.
For more poses to sketch afterward, the dog pencil drawing collection has plenty of sitting and standing dogs to study.

Shift to objects again with a pair of wine glasses leaning slightly toward each other. Two glasses side by side need to match in height and width, so glance between them as you draw the second one to keep the pair looking intentional rather than mismatched.
Trace the bowl of the first glass, down the stem, out into the base, then lift the line across to the second glass and repeat the same shape in reverse before closing the loop. The bowls often come out too round and full, more like goblets than wine glasses: narrow the top opening slightly compared to the widest point of the bowl.
If stems snap when you draw them too thin in one pass, slow right down for just that short vertical stroke, the rest of the line can stay quick. An ochre blob stretched behind both glasses together ties the pair into one soft shape.

Lift the mood with a bird caught mid flight, wings spread wide on either side of its small body. Light direction barely matters for a silhouette like this, but wing angle does everything: draw both wings sweeping slightly upward, as if caught at the top of a flap, for the liveliest pose.
Start at one wingtip, sweep in toward the body, trace the small rounded head and beak, then out through the second wing and down into a simple forked tail to finish. The two wings looking mismatched is the usual trip up, so keep your eye moving between them as you draw the second one.
If the beak comes out too sharp and awkward, round it into a soft triangle instead, it still reads clearly as a bird. A sage blob sitting just behind and slightly below the bird gives the sense of open sky without drawing a single cloud.
For more flight poses to compare against, see the ideas inside this bird pencil drawing list.

Settle into something simple and satisfying with a single lemon and its leaf. This is one of the quickest subjects on the list, closer to a quick morning sketch than a project, so it is a good one to reach for on a busy day.
Trace the oval body of the lemon first, let the line taper into the small nub at one end, then flow straight up into a pointed leaf shape before finishing back near the lemon’s edge. Lemons often end up looking like plain eggs if the taper gets lost: exaggerate the pointed end more than feels natural so it clearly reads as citrus.
In ten minutes you have the lemon and leaf done. With forty, add a few short curved lines across the lemon’s surface to suggest texture, still in the same unbroken pass if you plan the path before you start.
A sage blob behind the lemon plays nicely against the warm shape, even without using yellow ink at all.
If citrus shapes interest you further, this fruit drawing pencil sketches guide has more to try.

Settle back into a figure with a girl curled up reading a book. Her knees drawn up to her chest and the book balanced on them give the whole pose a cozy, folded shape that suits the one line style well.
Start at the top of her head, trace down through her bent back, curve into her knees pulled up close, then let the line flow forward into the open book resting against her legs before closing back near her shoulder. The book is where this usually goes wrong, coming out too flat or floating away from her hands: keep it tucked directly against her knees, touching the leg line rather than hovering above it.
If the folded pose feels too fiddly to plan, simplify her legs to one simple curled shape rather than defining each knee separately. A blush blob behind her shoulders and book finishes the quiet, cozy feeling.
If cozy reading scenes appeal to you, the book stack drawing lessons pair nicely with this kind of mood.

Take a short breather with a single spiral shell, one of the simplest shapes on this whole list. The entire drawing is really just one spiral and a few ridged lines fanning out from its center, so there is very little room to go wrong.
Start at the shell’s pointed tip, spiral the line inward two or three turns, then let it flow outward into the wider ridged body before finishing at the open edge. Spirals that get too tight in the center tend to clog into a solid blob: leave a little breathing room between each loop as you wind inward.
If the ridges feel fussy to add in one continuous line, skip them entirely and let the spiral and outer curve carry the whole shape, it still reads clearly as a shell. Rest an ochre blob behind it to suggest warm sand without drawing a single grain.

Step outdoors with a small mountain range, a row of peaks drawn in one continuous zigzag. Eye level sits low here, as if you are looking up from a valley floor, which is what gives distant mountains their tall, looming feel even in a tiny sketch.
Start at the base on one side, zigzag the line up and down across two or three peaks, let one dip lower to suggest a pass between them, then finish back down at the opposite base. Peaks that all come out the same height look flat and repetitive: vary them, with one taller peak drawing the eye.
If your zigzag wobbles into a messy scribble, slow down at each peak point specifically, the valleys between can stay quicker and looser. A sage blob low behind the mountains suggests distant hills without adding a single extra line.
For a loose, atmospheric take on mountain scenes in a different medium, see this winter landscape painting collection.

Swim back into something playful with a single fish, body curved and tail flicked to one side. The fish’s body is really one long curve from nose to tail, so keep that main sweep smooth before worrying about fins.
Trace the rounded head first, sweep the line back along the body in a gentle S-curve, flick out into the forked tail, then loop back along the top to add one dorsal fin before finishing near the head. Tails drawn too stiff and straight lose the sense of swimming motion: curve the tail noticeably off to one side rather than keeping it centered.
If the fin feels like too much for one pass, leave it out entirely, a curved body with a tail already reads clearly as a fish. A blush blob behind the whole shape keeps the mood soft rather than aquatic and cold.
Palette: Blush Pink,Carbon Black
Challenge your hand a little more with a woman holding a yoga pose, arms and legs folded into a balanced shape. A seated twist or a simple cross legged pose works best here, since standing poses need more room than a small one line sketch can comfortably hold.
Start at her head, trace down through one raised arm, into the torso, out through the crossed legs, and back up through the second arm to close near the shoulder. Limbs that end up the same length make the pose look flat: let the front leg read slightly longer than the back one, since that small difference suggests real depth and balance.
If the crossed legs tangle into confusion, simplify to one simple folded triangle shape beneath her rather than defining each leg separately. An ochre blob behind her centers the calm, grounded mood of the pose nicely.

Return to flowers with a rose, its petals spiraling in from the outer edge toward a tight center. Think of the rose as one continuous spiral, similar to the shell earlier but wound the opposite way, starting loose on the outside and tightening as it moves inward.
Begin at an outer petal edge, curve the line inward in gentle loops, tightening each turn slightly as you near the center, then let it flow back out and down into the stem and one leaf to finish. Spirals that tighten too fast in the middle clog into a solid dot: keep even spacing between loops until the very last turn.
If the center gets messy, leave it slightly open and loose rather than cramming more loops in, an imperfect rose center actually looks more natural, not less. A blush blob behind the bloom is the classic pairing here.
Palette: Blush Pink,Carbon Black
Try drawing the rose twice, once with tight even loops and once looser and more open. The looser version often ends up the prettier of the two.
Pour a little whimsy into a teapot, spout and handle balanced on either side of a round body. Compare the spout and handle sizes as you sketch them mentally first, since a teapot reads correctly only when those two shapes roughly balance each other across the body.
Trace the lid knob, down one side of the body, out into the spout, back across the base, up the other side, and loop out into the handle to finish near the lid. The spout is the trickiest part, often ending up too long and thin: keep it short and slightly curved rather than straight and pointed.
If the handle loop closes too tightly against the body, open it out further, a generous handle gap makes the teapot look more inviting and well proportioned. A sage blob nestled behind the pot finishes the cozy, kitchen table feeling.
Palette: Sage Green,Carbon Black
Soften things again with a small bunny, ears tall and tail tucked in a round pom. Ear length compared to body size is the one thing to watch here, since ears drawn too short make the bunny look more like a mouse than a rabbit.
Start at one ear tip, trace down into the head, out along the back, round into the haunches, and finish with a small round tail before closing back near the body. If one ear droops more than the other by accident, lean into it rather than fixing it, a slightly floppy ear just gives the bunny more personality.
The paws are the easiest place to trip up, often coming out too detailed for this small scale: simplify them to one small rounded bump at the front rather than separate toes. A blush blob tucked behind the bunny completes the soft, gentle mood.
Palette: Blush Pink,Carbon Black
Bring two figures together again, this time with a hug between friends, arms wrapped around each other’s shoulders. This pose needs a touch more planning than the single figures earlier, since two overlapping bodies have to stay readable as one continuous line.
Start at the top of one head, trace down through her arm as it wraps around the second friend’s shoulder, follow that second body down and back up through her arm wrapping in return, then finish near the first head. The arms crossing in the middle are where lines usually tangle into confusion: slow right down through that one overlapping stretch and keep it simple, just two soft curves meeting.
If the two heads end up at different heights and look awkward, nudge one slightly so they sit close to level, friends hugging usually lean in toward each other at a similar height. A sage blob stretched behind both figures ties the whole embrace into one warm shape.
Palette: Sage Green,Carbon Black
Zoom right in for a close up subject: a single closed eye with long curved lashes. This one lives or dies on the lash curve, so take your time with that particular stretch of line even though the rest can move quickly.
Start at the inner corner of the eye, trace the closed lid curve out to the outer corner, then let the line flick upward and outward into three or four curved lashes before finishing back near the inner corner. Lashes drawn straight instead of curved are the most common slip here: let each one arc gently upward the way real lashes do, fanning slightly outward rather than running parallel.
If the lashes come out too long and spidery, shorten them, three confident shorter lashes read better than five wispy long ones. An ochre blob behind the eye adds warmth to what is otherwise a very spare, quiet drawing.
Palette: Ochre Yellow,Carbon Black
Brighten things up with a sunflower, its ring of pointed petals framing a textured center. Petal count matters less than evenness: aim for somewhere between eight and twelve petals spaced as regularly as you can manage around the circle, since an uneven gap stands out more than you would expect.
Start at the center, loop out into one petal, back to the center, out into the next, continuing around the ring without lifting the pen, then finish with the stem trailing down from the base. Petals that get smaller as you work your way around are the usual tell of rushing: pause briefly between each one to keep them consistent in size.
If drawing a full ring of individual petals feels like too much for one line, simplify to a scalloped wavy circle instead of separate points, it still reads clearly as a sunflower. A sage blob behind the bloom grounds all that bright shape nicely.
Palette: Sage Green,Carbon Black
Take on a horse head, mane flowing to one side, as one of the more involved subjects on this list. Map the proportions loosely in your mind before starting: the muzzle is roughly a third of the total head length, and getting that ratio wrong is what makes horse heads come out looking like dogs or deer instead.
Start at the top of the ears, trace down the long bridge of the nose to the muzzle, back up along the jaw, then let the line sweep into a flowing mane along the neck before finishing near the ears. The mane is the natural place to slow down, since a mane drawn too stiff loses all its movement: let it wave in two or three loose curves rather than one flat line.
If the muzzle comes out too short and the whole head looks squashed, lengthen it, horses read correctly with a notably long nose compared to the rest of the head. A blush blob behind the head softens what is otherwise quite a strong, graphic shape.
Palette: Blush Pink,Carbon Black
Close the list the way it started, with a face, but add a resting leaf tucked near the cheek or hair for a gentle finishing touch. Treat this as the most reflective piece on the page, something to sit with slowly rather than rush through.
Start at the forehead, trace down through closed eyes and a soft nose and lips, continue into the hair, and let the line drift out into a single leaf shape resting against the hairline before closing back near the start. Faces with closed eyes can look expressionless if the lids are drawn too flat: curve them gently downward, the same soft arc used for the lashes drawing earlier in this list.
If the leaf feels like an awkward add on, let it overlap the hairline rather than sitting beside it, that overlap is what makes it look tucked in rather than stuck on. An ochre blob behind the whole face brings warmth to this quiet closing piece, a fitting note to end the set on.

What to Do Next
Choose one subject from this list, whichever shape makes you want to pick up the pen right now, and start on a single sheet of smooth white paper. Keep the line slow and the color blob simple, and you will have a finished piece before you know it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What pen is best for one line drawing?
A fine black fineliner between 0.3 and 0.5 millimeter works best, since it gives a smooth, even line without catching on the paper. A fine gel pen is a good substitute if that is what you already have on hand.
Can you really never lift the pen in a one line drawing?
Yes, that is the whole idea, though a tiny break where the ink runs dry is perfectly fine to fix. Plan the path mentally before you start so the pen travels a sensible route through the subject without doubling back too much.
What if I make a mistake partway through the line?
Keep going rather than stopping, since a small wobble usually reads as character once the drawing is finished. If a line crosses badly, let it cross and move on, the color blob behind it will carry a lot of the visual weight anyway.
How do I add the color blob behind the drawing?
Paint or color the soft shape first on a fresh sheet, let it dry fully, then ink the line drawing directly on top or trace it over once positioned. Alternatively, draw the line first and add the color blob around it afterward with a light touch so the ink does not smear.
What paper works best for this style?
Smooth, slightly heavier white paper handles fineliner ink cleanly without feathering at the edges. A sketchbook or drawing pad meant for pen work is ideal, since very textured paper can catch the nib and interrupt your line.
