27 Bonsai Tree Drawing Ideas of Tiny Pines, Blossoming Maples and Zen Windowsills

A bonsai tree drawing rewards patience in the best way: a few confident ink lines and a light wash of color, and you have a whole small world sitting on white paper. There is something calming about drawing a tree that has already been shaped by someone’s careful hands for years, pot and all, long before you ever picked up your pen.

Below you will find twenty seven of them, from a simple pine on a wooden stand to a misty courtyard scene, each one built to finish in a single sitting. Pick whichever tree catches your eye first and work through the steps in its own paragraph.

Start with the trunk, because a juniper bonsai lives or dies by its twist. Sketch a soft S curve in pencil first, thicker at the base and tapering as it rises, then commit to it in ink with a slightly wobbly, deliberate line rather than a smooth one.

Build the foliage as a handful of rounded, cloud-like pads rather than individual needles. Load your brush with a mix of sap green and a touch of olive, dab the pads on wet, and let some edges stay soft while others dry sharp for texture.

If the trunk ends up too straight, do not panic: add a second smaller curve near the top so the whole shape reads as windswept rather than stiff. A grey or terracotta pot anchors the piece without competing with that twisting line.

Measure the pot width against the trunk’s base before you ink anything: a trunk that looks thick as a stroke of pencil but sits in a wide pot will read as spindly once you add the pads, so keep the two in proportion from the first line.

Move from green to red with a maple bonsai dressed for autumn. Ink the trunk first as a set of thin branching lines that fork again and again, keeping the overall silhouette narrower at the top than a juniper’s rounded pads.

For the leaves, skip outlining each one and instead dab small clusters of color directly with the brush tip, alternating cadmium red, orange and a touch of yellow so the canopy feels varied rather than flat. Let the wash pool slightly at the center of each cluster for natural depth.

The common trap here is making every leaf cluster the same size, which flattens the whole tree. Vary cluster sizes and leave a few bare twigs poking through where leaves have already dropped. No red on hand works too: a warm orange alone still reads as autumn if the trunk stays dark and crisp.

Try it in ten minutes with just three or four leaf clusters and a simple round pot, or spend forty minutes adding a scatter of fallen leaves at the base and a second, smaller maple behind it for depth.

Give a cherry blossom bonsai its moment by pairing soft pink flowers against a confidently blue pot. Ink the trunk and bare branches first, thin and slightly angular, leaving plenty of gaps between branches for the blossoms to sit in later.

Once the ink is dry, wash the pot in a strong cobalt or ultramarine blue while the branches stay untouched, then come back with a very pale pink mixed mostly of water to dot blossoms along the branch tips using just the brush point.

Painters often make the blossoms too uniform in size and spacing. Group three or four together at a few points along the branches and leave other stretches bare, the way real blossom clusters fall. If pink paint feels too delicate, a light wash of rose pencil under a thin ink dot works just as well.

Place the pot’s eye level low on the page, as though you are looking slightly up at the tree, and the blossoms will seem to float a little higher and lighter above the rim.

Settle into a pine bonsai next, the classic shape most people picture when they hear the word bonsai. Ink the trunk thick and a little gnarled, then build the foliage in flat, horizontal pads stacked at different heights rather than one rounded mass.

Each pad gets a quick scribble of short diagonal strokes in dark green to suggest needle clusters, worked from the outer edge inward so the center of each pad stays a touch darker and denser.

The wooden stand beneath the pot deserves its own attention: ink it as simple straight lines and wash it in a warm raw umber so it reads as wood without fussy grain detail. If the pads start looking like solid blobs, break their outline with a few stray ink lines poking out, since real pine foliage is never perfectly smooth.

Keep one concrete habit from this piece: always ink the pot and stand last, after the tree is finished, so you can judge how much weight the base needs to hold the composition.

Bring the tree indoors with a bonsai resting on a sunny windowsill. Light direction matters more here than in any tree alone, so decide early that the sun comes from one side and let every shadow, from the pot to the sill, fall consistently away from it.

Ink the windowsill and a hint of window frame first in a light, confident line, then the pot and tree, keeping the foliage looser and smaller than in a standalone tree study since the setting shares the page with it.

Wash the sunlit side of the pot and leaves in warmer, paler tones and the shadow side in cooler grey-green, which does more to sell the sunshine than any yellow glow would. If the window feels fussy, suggest it with just two or three straight lines rather than a full frame.

Add one small cast shadow stretching from the pot across the sill, and the whole scene will suddenly feel lit rather than just colored in.

Pair your next bonsai with a tiny stone lantern, the kind found tucked beside trees in Japanese gardens. Draw the lantern as a simple stack of geometric shapes, a square base, a short post, a boxy top with a peaked roof, before you touch the tree at all, since its proportions anchor the whole scene.

Once the lantern sits correctly in scale, about a third the height of the tree, ink the bonsai beside or slightly behind it with a modest, rounded canopy that does not overwhelm the stonework.

Wash the lantern in flat stone grey with just a touch of blue, leaving a highlight edge bare on one side to suggest carved stone catching light. If the lantern starts looking too detailed and busy, simplify it back to blocky shapes, since a loose geometric lantern reads more convincingly than an overworked one.

A little moss, a few dabs of dark green at the lantern’s base, ties the stone and the tree together in one glance.

Turn the pot upside down in your mind for a cascade bonsai, since this style grows downward over the rim rather than up. Start the trunk at the top of the pot and curve it down and outward in ink, letting it fall below the pot’s base line by the time it reaches its lowest point.

Place the pot on a small raised stand or block so the cascading branch has somewhere to fall without hitting the bottom edge of your paper, then build foliage pads along the hanging branch in decreasing sizes as it drops.

The usual mistake is making the cascade too stiff, like a straight diagonal line. Let it curve gently in two directions, down and slightly to the side, the way water would actually fall. No stand handy? A simple flat shadow beneath the pot still gives the branch room to read as hanging free.

Compare the lowest foliage pad’s height to the pot’s own height before inking it in, since a cascade that drops too far below the pot looks broken rather than graceful.

Add a hand into the scene for a bonsai being trimmed with small scissors, which turns a tree study into a small story. Draw the tree first and fully, then sketch a simplified hand and wrist entering from one side of the page, holding a pair of narrow bonsai scissors angled toward a specific branch.

Keep the hand loose and a little stylized rather than anatomically precise; a few confident ink lines for fingers read better at this scale than an overworked hand ever will.

Leave one or two small clipped leaves falling near the scissors to suggest the action is happening right now. If hands feel intimidating to draw, crop the scene so only the scissors and a sliver of sleeve appear, which still tells the story without asking you to draw fingers at all.

One tip worth keeping for today: draw the scissors slightly open, blades apart, since closed scissors read as a resting tool rather than one mid-snip.

Widen the view for a bonsai set on a stone wall within a Japanese garden, letting the setting carry more weight than usual. Block in the wall first as a row of loosely stacked rectangular stones, varying their sizes so the wall feels handmade rather than a drawn grid.

Perspective matters here: decide your eye level sits roughly at the pot’s height, which keeps the wall’s top edge nearly horizontal and stops the whole scene from tipping. Ink the bonsai sitting centrally on the wall, modest in size compared to the stonework beneath it.

Wash the stones in warm grey with touches of ochre in the cracks, and keep a hint of garden greenery, a few background leaves, soft and pale behind the wall so it recedes rather than competes with the tree.

If the stonework starts eating the page, reduce it to just three or four stones directly under the pot and let the rest fade into bare paper.

For a related scene with lanterns and blossoms in the background, the ideas in this Japanese street scene painting guide pair nicely with a garden wall setting.

Tangle things up with a ficus bonsai, known for the aerial roots that drop from its branches toward the soil. Ink the main trunk and canopy first in a fairly solid, rounded shape, since ficus foliage reads denser than pine or juniper.

Then add the aerial roots as a handful of thin, slightly wavy lines dropping from the lower branches, some reaching the soil and thickening at the base where they have taken hold, others left hanging shorter and still thin throughout.

The texture of ficus bark and roots rewards a light touch: once the ink is dry, use a just-damp brush to lift a little color from the trunk’s edge, suggesting the pale, smooth bark this tree is known for. If your paper does not lift color easily, a dry brush dragged lightly over the trunk gives a similar broken, textured edge.

Vary the roots’ thickness and spacing rather than making them evenly spaced, since real aerial roots drop in irregular clusters.

Multiply your tree for a bonsai forest planting, where several small trunks share one shallow tray rather than each getting its own pot. Vary the heights deliberately, one tall trunk as the visual anchor, two or three medium ones, and a couple of small ones tucked near the front.

Ink the tallest trunk first and place it off-center rather than in the middle, then build the others around it, overlapping some canopies slightly so the group reads as one forest rather than a lineup.

Wash the trees in slightly different green mixes, some cooler, some warmer, so individual trees stay distinguishable even where branches touch. If the group starts looking too evenly spaced, nudge two trunks closer together and leave a wider gap elsewhere, since real forests cluster unevenly.

Once this composition works, try it again with all conifers for a quiet, uniform mood, or mix a maple in among junipers for a forest with one burst of autumn color.

Let color trail downward with a wisteria bonsai in bloom, its long purple clusters hanging beneath a twisting woody trunk. Ink the trunk thick and knotted, more gnarled than most bonsai styles, since wisteria trunks grow genuinely rope-like with age.

From the branches, hang the flower clusters as loose teardrop shapes rather than individual blossoms, washing each in a gradient from pale lilac at the top to a deeper violet at the tip where the cluster narrows.

Painters often paint the clusters too stiff and straight. Let each one curve slightly and vary their lengths, with a couple of shorter buds among the longer blooms. No violet in your set is no problem: mix blue and a touch of red pigment together for a convincing lilac instead.

Keep one tip close for today: paint the clusters wet-into-wet so the color blends softly from light to dark within each one, rather than painting flat color and adding a hard-edged shadow afterward.

Palette: Lilac,Violet,Payne’s Grey,Raw Umber

Give the tree some quiet company with a bonsai sitting beside a cup of steaming green tea. Ink the tree first at a modest size, then place the teacup close to the base of the pot, drawn as a simple rounded shape with a thin saucer line beneath it.

A few curling lines rising from the cup’s rim suggest steam without any need for detail; keep them light and slightly broken rather than one solid continuous curl, which reads as smoke rather than steam.

Wash the tea itself in a pale, slightly cloudy green, a shade lighter than the foliage so the two greens stay distinct rather than blending into one flat color across the page. If green tea feels too subtle in wash form, add a thin ring of darker green right at the liquid’s edge to define the cup’s rim clearly.

This is a nice scene to draw loosely and small, since the comfort of the pairing matters more than any fine detail in the cup.

Palette: Sap Green,Pale Green,Stone Grey,Payne’s Grey

Root the tree directly into stone for a bonsai grown on a rock, its visible roots gripping the surface before reaching down into a shallow tray of soil below. Ink the rock first as an irregular, angular mass, then draw the roots as thick lines hugging its contours, thinning as they travel toward the soil.

Patches of moss soften the hard rock edges: dab these in with a nearly dry brush loaded with dark green, pressing and lifting rather than dragging, which gives a textured, mottled look instead of a flat green smear.

The trunk rising from this rocky base can be relatively simple and upright, letting the rock and roots carry most of the visual interest. If your rock shape looks too smooth and round, add two or three sharp angular facets along one edge to break the silhouette.

Try the quick ten-minute version with just rock, roots and a simple canopy, or spend forty minutes building layered moss texture and a small tray with visible soil beneath.

Strip the color back almost entirely for a bonsai in the snow, where bare paper does most of the work. Ink the trunk and bare winter branches first, since a snow scene suits a deciduous tree with its leaves already fallen better than a full conifer.

Leave the foliage areas and ground mostly untouched white paper, adding snow only as small loaded dabs of very pale grey-blue sitting on top of branches and along the pot’s rim, as though it has settled there rather than been painted as a solid shape.

The trap in snow scenes is overworking the white areas until they lose their brightness. Wash only the shadowed sides of the trunk, pot and any snow mounds in cool grey-blue, and trust the bare paper everywhere else to read as snow.

A few single ink dots falling through the air suggest gentle snowfall and finish the mood without any extra wash at all.

Set the tree among everyday clutter for a bonsai sharing a desk with a small stack of books. Ink the books first as simple overlapping rectangles of slightly different sizes, since getting their perspective right early makes the pot sitting on top of them look stable rather than floating.

Draw the bonsai smaller in scale than in a standalone study, since it now shares visual weight with the books and whatever else sits nearby, a pencil cup or a lamp edge peeking into frame.

Wash the book covers in muted, slightly desaturated colors, dusty red or faded blue, so they support the scene rather than competing with the tree’s green. If the desk feels bare, a single pencil or folded paper beside the books adds life without extra complexity.

Keep the horizon line, where the desk surface meets the background, low and simple, just one straight ink line, so the eye settles on the tree rather than the furniture around it.

Palette: Sap Green,Dusty Red,Faded Blue,Raw Umber

Bring back a burst of pink with an azalea bonsai, known for flowers so dense they can nearly hide the foliage beneath. Ink the trunk and branch structure first, keeping it visible and a little exposed since you want some bark showing through the eventual bloom.

Build the flowers in small clustered dabs of bright pink and magenta, working from the outer silhouette inward so the overall canopy shape stays rounded and full rather than spiky.

A common misstep is painting every flower the exact same pink. Mix a slightly cooler pink for some clusters and a warmer, more coral pink for others, which gives the bloom natural variation even at a small scale. If magenta is not in your palette, pink mixed with a tiny touch of red pushes it warmer and works just as well.

Once this version feels comfortable, try a half-bloomed azalea next time, mixing a few green leafy branches among the pink for a tree caught mid-flower.

Add a visitor to your next bonsai with a small bird perched among its branches. Finish the tree completely first, then choose one sturdy branch near the outer edge of the canopy and sketch the bird there in a simple rounded body with a small pointed beak and tail.

Keep the bird’s proportions compact, since an overly large bird will dwarf a small tree and break the sense of scale the whole piece depends on. A sparrow or small finch shape, round body and short legs gripping the branch, reads clearly even at a tiny size.

Wash the bird in soft browns and a touch of cream on the belly, leaving the ink lines doing most of the work in defining its shape rather than heavy color. If drawing a convincing bird feels tricky, simplify it to an almost oval silhouette with just a beak and a tail line, which still reads instantly as a bird at this scale.

Try it today: place the bird looking toward the open side of the page rather than back into the foliage, which keeps the composition feeling alive.

If birds in trees are a subject you enjoy, the cute squirrel drawing list has more small creature and branch pairings worth trying.

Give the container its own character with a bonsai in a round ceramic pot that carries a visible crack, the kind of imperfection that makes a piece feel lived-in. Ink the pot as a clean, confident circle first, then add the crack as one irregular jagged line running partway across its surface, never straight through the center.

Wash the pot in a warm earthy glaze color, leaving the crack line itself untouched white paper so it reads as a genuine break rather than a painted-on decoration. A touch of darker grey right along one side of the crack adds a sense of depth to the fracture.

The tree sitting in this pot can stay fairly simple, since the crack and glaze carry the visual interest here. If a convincing ceramic glaze feels difficult, two overlapping washes of slightly different warm tones, left uneven rather than blended perfectly, give a similar handmade glaze look.

Keep the crack asymmetrical and positioned off to one side, since a centered crack looks posed rather than accidental.

Zoom out for a bonsai shelf scene, several pots lined up as they would sit in a nursery or grower’s display. Ink the shelf itself first as a simple horizontal plank, then space three or four pots along it at slightly different distances rather than in a perfectly even row.

Vary each tree’s style and size so the shelf feels like a real working collection, a tall thin juniper beside a squat rounded maple, rather than copies of the same tree repeated. Keep the trees further from the viewer slightly smaller and less detailed to suggest depth along the shelf.

Wash each pot a different color, terracotta, grey, pale blue, so the eye can easily tell them apart even in a loose sketch. If fitting several full trees feels like too much for one sitting, reduce the shelf to just two pots and leave more bare paper around them.

Working this way, with varied sizes and spacing, is the single habit worth carrying into any multi-subject scene you draw next.

Palette: Sap Green,Terracotta,Stone Grey,Pale Blue

Push a tree to one extreme with a windswept bonsai, its entire canopy and branches trained to lean hard in a single direction as though shaped by years of wind off a coast. Ink the trunk leaning at a clear diagonal angle rather than a gentle curve, with all the major branches following that same direction rather than branching evenly on both sides.

This is a strong place to think about how eye level and direction read together: keep every foliage pad trailing the same way the trunk leans, since one branch pointing the wrong direction will break the illusion of wind entirely.

Wash the foliage in slightly streaky strokes that follow the lean, dragging the brush in the direction of the wind rather than dabbing it in rounded pads as you might for an upright tree.

If the lean looks unconvincing, exaggerate the trunk’s angle further than feels natural at first, since windswept bonsai are deliberately dramatic and a cautious lean just reads as a mistake.

Palette: Sap Green,Olive Green,Payne’s Grey,Burnt Sienna

Focus in close for a bonsai whose soil surface is covered in tiny pebbles, a detail real bonsai growers use to dress the surface and hold moisture. Ink the tree and pot as usual, then at the base, scatter a loose collection of small irregular oval and round shapes across the visible soil line.

Vary the pebble sizes noticeably, a few larger stones among many smaller ones, and leave gaps of bare soil color between them rather than covering every inch, which keeps the texture believable rather than solid and flat.

Wash the pebbles in a mix of warm grey and pale beige, with just a couple of the larger stones given a slightly darker shadow beneath to lift them off the soil visually. If individual pebbles feel fiddly at a small scale, a scattered texture of short dry-brush dashes across the soil area reads as pebbles from a slight distance just as well.

Keep the soil itself a warm dark brown beneath the pebbles so they read as sitting on top of it rather than floating.

Palette: Stone Grey,Pale Beige,Raw Umber,Sap Green

Bring movement into a still subject with a bonsai caught in rain, water beaded across its leaves. Ink the tree fully first in its usual dry state, then add rain as a series of thin, slightly angled parallel lines falling across the background, lighter and more scattered than you might first guess.

For the drops themselves, leave small unpainted circles or short comma shapes along the top edges of leaves and branches where water would naturally collect, then outline just the lower curve of each drop in a touch of darker ink to suggest weight and roundness.

Wash the whole scene slightly cooler and greyer than a dry-weather version, since rain flattens color saturation in real light. If painting individual droplets feels too fiddly, a few scattered white gel pen dots added after the wash has dried give the same glistening effect with far less fuss.

Keep the rain lines sparse and angled consistently in one direction, since dense or crossing rain lines quickly turn into visual clutter.

Pair the tree with its own tool for a bonsai sitting beside a small watering can. Ink the watering can first as a rounded body with a curved spout and a simple loop handle, keeping proportions compact so it reads as the small version made specifically for bonsai care rather than a full-sized garden can.

Place it close to the pot’s base, angled slightly as though just set down after use, and let its spout point gently toward the tree to connect the two shapes visually across the page.

Wash the can in a muted metal grey or soft faded green, with a thin highlight line left bare along its curved body to suggest a slight shine. If metal textures feel tricky, a flat single wash with no highlight still reads as a can; the shape alone tells the story.

A single drop or two falling from the spout, left as bare paper with a thin ink outline, finishes the small moment without extra effort.

Palette: Sap Green,Stone Grey,Payne’s Grey,Faded Green

Widen the setting once more for a bonsai placed in a temple courtyard, with architecture now framing the tree rather than just a wall or shelf. Block in the background first with simple geometric shapes, a section of sloped roofline and a post or pillar edge, kept loose and reduced to essential lines only.

Position your eye level at the base of the pot so the roofline above sits at a gentle angle rather than a flat horizontal, which gives the architecture a touch of real perspective without demanding technical drawing skills.

Keep the courtyard elements, stone paving, distant pillars, washed in pale, desaturated tones so they sit clearly behind the tree rather than competing with its greens. If full architecture feels like too much, a single curved roof edge peeking in from one corner of the page suggests the temple setting with minimal effort.

Let the bonsai remain the largest, most detailed element on the page, with everything architectural kept lighter in both line weight and color.

For more ideas on building small architectural scenes without overdoing the detail, the castle drawing list covers similar loose, simplified building shapes.

Shift to a Mediterranean mood with an olive bonsai, its narrow silvery leaves and gnarled trunk sitting naturally in a warm terracotta pot. Ink the trunk with plenty of texture, short broken lines rather than one smooth outline, since mature olive bark looks rough and deeply grooved even on a small bonsai.

For the foliage, use tiny elongated dashes rather than rounded dabs, since olive leaves are narrow and pointed, quite different from the broader leaf shapes used for maple or ficus.

Mix a grey-green rather than a pure green for the leaf wash, since real olive foliage leans silvery rather than fresh and bright. If grey-green feels hard to mix, add a touch of white gouache or simply more water to a basic sap green to mute it down.

Wash the terracotta pot in a warm orange-brown that contrasts clearly against that silvery foliage, which is really the whole visual point of pairing these two together.

Palette: Grey Green,Terracotta,Raw Umber,Payne’s Grey

Close the series on a quiet note with a bonsai in morning mist, where atmosphere matters more than any sharp detail. Ink the tree with slightly softer, less defined lines than usual, since a misty scene suits edges that blur a little rather than crisp outlines throughout.

Once the ink is dry, wash a very pale grey-blue across the background and the lower portion of the tree, letting it fade to nothing partway up the canopy so the top of the tree stays clearer and the base feels wrapped in fog.

The key habit for mist is restraint: resist the urge to add too much detail anywhere, since mist works by implying rather than showing. If the wash dries too even and flat, lift a little color back out with a clean damp brush in patches to break up the fog unevenly, the way real mist never sits perfectly uniform.

Leave the pot and tree base the softest, most faded part of the whole piece, which is the opposite of how most bonsai drawings are built and exactly what sells the mist.

What to Do Next

Pick one bonsai that matches how much time you have today, a simple pine on a stand for a quick sketch or a full temple courtyard scene for a longer sitting, and start with light pencil guidelines before any ink touches the page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ink is best for a bonsai tree drawing?

A waterproof black fineliner or a dip pen with India ink works best, since the line needs to survive a watercolor wash without bleeding or smudging once you add color on top.

Do I need to draw real bonsai trees from a photo?

No, you can invent the trunk shape and pot freely as long as you keep proportions believable, with a thicker trunk base and foliage pads that taper and cluster the way real pruned trees do.

How do I keep the trunk from looking too straight or stiff?

Sketch the trunk’s curve lightly in pencil first and exaggerate the bend slightly before inking, since a cautious curve often flattens out and looks stiff once the ink line goes down.

What size paper works for these bonsai drawings?

A small to medium sheet, around five by seven inches or similar, suits these ideas well, since keeping the tree large on a smaller page is easier than filling a big sheet convincingly.

How much watercolor wash should I add over the ink?

Keep the wash light and transparent, closer to a tint than a full color, so the ink lines stay visible through it and the white paper still shows through in places.
