29 Dragon Doodle Ideas of Baby Dragons With Teacups, Tiny Wings and Toasted Marshmallows

4

A dragon doodle is the kind of small drawing that forgives everything: a round belly, two stubby wings and a curl of smoke and suddenly you have a character with a whole personality. These little dragons are built from simple rounded shapes, so there is no scary anatomy to get right, just a snout, a tail and a lot of charm.

Below you will find 29 baby dragon scenes to fill a page with, from one sitting in a teacup to one strumming a tiny guitar. Grab a fineliner and a couple of markers and work through them in order, easiest first, or just jump to whichever one makes you smile.

Start here because the egg carries most of the drawing. Draw a wide oval with your fineliner, then break the top third with a jagged crack line and tilt one broken piece sideways like a lid. Add a scatter of small dots for the speckles once the shape feels right.

Poke the dragon’s snout and one claw out through the crack, just a rounded nose and two tiny fingers gripping the shell edge. Keep the head small compared to the egg, that size gap is what sells the just hatched look.

If the egg ends up lopsided, thicken one side with a few short curved lines to suggest shell texture, nobody will notice the wobble. Color the shell in tangerine with jade speckles, and leave the peeking snout jade green too.

No orange marker on hand: a brown or yellow marker reads as eggshell just as well.

Once the egg exists, the dragon curled up beside it is an easy next step. Draw a comma shaped body on its side, tail wrapped loosely around itself, with the head tucked down and eyes closed as two short curved lines.

Work the cracked eggshell halves behind the dragon first, two broken oval pieces leaning apart, then build the sleeping body in front so it overlaps the shell naturally. Keep the wings small and folded flat against the back, just two little triangle bumps.

If the pose looks stiff, round every edge a bit more, sleeping dragons should look soft and boneless. A tiny curl of smoke drifting from one nostril, drawn as a thin wobbly line, finishes the sleepy mood.

Swap the fineliner for a soft pencil if you want a gentler, smudgier line for the sleeping body.

Palette: Jade Green,Tangerine Orange,Ink Black

Move from sleeping to a dragon mid attempt at flight, wings flapping hard and feet still off the ground. Draw the body upright and slightly stretched, arms out for balance, then add wings in an exaggerated upward flap rather than folded flat.

Put a couple of short motion lines behind each wing tip to show the flapping, and lift the tail slightly as if it is helping with balance. The trick with this one is proportion: keep the wings roughly the same length as the whole body, small dragon wings should always look a size too small for real flight, that mismatch is the joke.

If the pose looks too static, tilt the whole body a few degrees off vertical, like it just wobbled. Color the wings jade with a few tangerine motion lines for energy.

This pairs nicely with the quieter hatching scenes if you are working through a whole sketchbook page of this same little dragon, the way the dinosaur doodle ideas page builds a tiny creature through different moments too.

Palette: Jade Green,Tangerine Orange,Ink Black

Give the dragon a moment of comedy with a sneeze. Draw the head tipped back, eyes squeezed shut as tight curved lines, mouth open in a small round O, and the body braced with both front claws pressed to the ground.

Build the smoke puff last, a soft cloud shape bursting from the snout with a few short curls trailing off to one side. Work the cloud loosely, a tight neat cloud looks wrong for a sneeze, it should look like it just escaped in a hurry.

If the sneeze cloud ends up too big and steals the show, shrink it and add a tiny spark of orange at its center instead, that keeps the dragon as the main character. Leave the smoke uncolored or just outlined, so the jade dragon and tangerine spark stand out against it.

No gray marker for the smoke: a light pencil shading works fine for a soft puff.

Palette: Jade Green,Tangerine Orange,Ink Black

This one builds on the sneeze but flips the joke: the dragon is trying its hardest to breathe fire and all that comes out is a single spark. Draw the body puffed up, chest out, cheeks bulging slightly, mouth stretched wide open in effort.

Place just one small star shaped spark right at the mouth, nothing bigger, and add a few straining lines around the eyes to show the effort. The mismatch between the big pose and the tiny result is the whole point, so resist the urge to make the spark impressive.

If the straining face looks more angry than determined, soften the eyebrows into a worried curve instead of a sharp one. Color the spark tangerine and leave everything else jade and outline only, so the spark reads as the punchline.

Palette: Jade Green,Tangerine Orange,Ink Black

Here the dragon’s fire finally works, and it puts it to good use. Draw the dragon sitting back on its haunches, one claw holding a thin stick out in front with a round marshmallow on the end, head tilted down so its own small flame licks at it from below.

Build the flame as a simple teardrop shape in tangerine, drawn last so it sits right under the marshmallow without covering the stick. Keep the marshmallow plain white with just a thin outline and a few tiny toasted brown dots near the bottom.

If the flame looks too wild, narrow it to a single calm point, a cozy toasting flame is smaller and steadier than a startled one. This is a good spot to practice dry brush strokes with the marker tip for a slightly textured flame edge instead of a flat fill.

Swap the stick for a long twig shape if you want it to look more campfire than kitchen.

Palette: Jade Green,Tangerine Orange,Ink Black

Carry the glow of that flame into a quieter scene, a dragon curled up with a book, reading by the light its own breath makes. Draw the body seated cross legged, an open book propped on its knees, and a small steady flame hovering just above one claw like a held lantern.

Here is where light direction matters: since the flame is the only light source, draw a few short radiating lines around it and leave the far side of the dragon’s face slightly less detailed, as if the glow does not quite reach there. That small contrast makes the flame feel like it is actually lighting the scene rather than just floating beside it.

If the book looks flat, angle its pages slightly toward the viewer with a simple curved spine line. Color the flame tangerine, the dragon jade, and leave the book’s pages white to catch the glow.

This quiet, lit scene works well paired with the cocoa mug idea further down if you want a whole cozy corner of your sketchbook.

Palette: Jade Green,Tangerine Orange,Ink Black

Ease into something simpler after the lit scene, a dragon holding a teacup with both front claws wrapped around it like it is precious. Draw the teacup first as a small rounded cup with a curved handle and a thin saucer line beneath, then build the dragon sitting behind it, body upright, both claws curled around the cup’s sides.

Keep the dragon’s head tilted slightly forward over the steam, drawn as two or three thin wavy lines rising from the cup. If the claws look too stiff gripping the cup, round their tips into soft blunt shapes rather than sharp points, baby dragon claws should look pudgy, not clawed.

If you want this done fast, the ten minute version is just the cup, the claws and a simple round head, no steam, no background detail. The forty minute version adds a painted pattern on the teacup itself and a few small scale marks along the dragon’s back.

Color the cup tangerine with a jade handle for a nice contrast against the green body.

Palette: Jade Green,Tangerine Orange,Ink Black

Since the teacup is already fresh in mind, try the bigger version of the joke: the dragon sitting inside one instead of holding it. Draw a generously sized teacup first, wide enough to fit the whole curled up body, then nest the dragon inside with knees tucked up and tail hanging over the rim.

The scale comparison is the whole trick here, so measure the cup against the dragon’s body before you commit to ink: the cup should look roughly as tall as the dragon is long, so it reads as a cozy fit rather than a tight squeeze. Add a thin saucer beneath and a curl of steam rising beside the dragon’s head.

If the dragon looks like it is floating above the cup rather than sitting in it, lower the visible body line so the rim overlaps the belly slightly. Color the cup jade with a tangerine rim stripe, and leave the dragon’s belly a touch lighter than its back.

Palette: Jade Green,Tangerine Orange,Ink Black

Keep the scale fun with a dragon that looks tiny next to its snack. Draw a strawberry first, wide at the top and tapering to a point, with a few small seed dots and a leafy green cap, then give it bite marks along one edge before placing the dragon’s head right up against that bitten side.

Hold the dragon’s body small compared to the strawberry, maybe half its height, so the fruit clearly dwarfs it. Its mouth should overlap the fruit’s edge slightly rather than sit beside it, that overlap is what makes the nibbling read clearly.

If the bite marks look too neat, rough them up with a few jagged uneven lines, a real nibble is never a clean curve. Color the strawberry tangerine leaning red if your marker allows it, with jade for the leafy cap and the dragon itself.

No strawberry at hand to reference: any rounded berry shape with a pointed bottom and small cap reads the same way.

Palette: Tangerine Orange,Jade Green,Ink Black

Twist the usual fire breathing joke into something gentler, a dragon blowing soap bubbles instead. Draw the head tilted up with lips pursed into a small round shape, then scatter a handful of bubbles above it, a few overlapping circles of different sizes rather than one uniform row.

Vary the bubble sizes clearly, one noticeably bigger than the rest near the top, so the group feels playful instead of mechanical. Leave each bubble mostly outline only, with just a small curved highlight line inside to suggest shine.

If the bubbles crowd the dragon’s face, push them further up and to one side so the head stays the clear focus. A faint jade tint on one or two bubbles and a tangerine tint on another keeps the rest of the page’s color story without overcoloring a scene that should feel light.

Palette: Jade Green,Tangerine Orange,Ink Black

Try a white gel pen for the bubble highlights over a light marker wash, it gives a nicer shine than an uncolored line alone.

Give the dragon a caretaker moment with a small flower and a watering can. Draw the flower first, a simple rounded blossom on a short stem with two leaves, then build the dragon crouched beside it, one claw tipping a tiny watering can so a few curved droplet lines fall onto the petals.

Think about where the eye naturally lands first here: keep the watering can and the falling droplets at the dragon’s own eye level, tilted down toward the flower rather than drawn from above, that low angle makes the moment feel tender rather than distant. Keep the can small, no bigger than the dragon’s own head.

If the droplets look like straight rain, curve each one gently and taper the end to a point, water droplets are never perfectly straight. Color the watering can tangerine, the flower petals a soft jade, and the dragon body jade as well for a calm, matching scene.

Palette: Jade Green,Tangerine Orange,Ink Black

Move the energy up a notch with a dragon mid chase, paws scrambling after a butterfly just out of reach. Draw the butterfly first, a small body with two pairs of rounded wings tilted mid flight, then place the dragon below and behind it, body stretched forward, one claw reaching up.

Draw a couple of short curved lines trailing from the dragon’s back feet to suggest the scramble, and tilt the tail up behind for balance. If the dragon’s reaching claw looks too flat against the butterfly, angle it slightly upward past the wing tip so there is clearly a gap between them, the near miss is funnier than a catch.

If you are short on time, the ten minute version skips the motion lines entirely and just leans the dragon’s whole body forward. The forty minute version adds a simple wing pattern on the butterfly in tangerine dots over jade wings.

For more flying things to chase across a page, the butterfly doodle ideas cover a whole range of wing patterns worth borrowing.

Keep the motion going with a dragon balanced on a skateboard. Draw the board first, a simple elongated oval with two small wheel circles underneath, then build the dragon standing on top, knees slightly bent and both arms out wide for balance, tail curled up behind for counterweight.

Measure the board against the dragon’s body before inking: the board should run roughly from nose to tail length of the dragon, long enough to look rideable rather than like a tiny skateboard. A couple of short speed lines streaming behind one wheel finish the push.

If the standing pose looks too stiff, bend one knee more than the other, an uneven stance always reads more dynamic than a symmetrical one. Color the board tangerine with jade wheels, keeping the dragon itself jade so the whole thing holds together.

Palette: Tangerine Orange,Jade Green,Ink Black

Slow the pace down with a dragon hugging a single coin far too big for it, arms barely reaching around its edge. Draw the coin first as a wide circle with a simple emblem or a star etched in the middle, then wrap the dragon around one side of it, cheek pressed flat against the metal, both arms stretched as far as they will go.

Keep the coin noticeably larger than the dragon’s whole body, roughly twice its height, that size gap is what makes the hug read as devoted rather than casual. Leave the far side of the coin’s edge slightly thicker in line weight to suggest its roundness.

If the arms look too short to reach around, let them simply not quite meet at the back, a gap there is more charming than forcing an impossible stretch. Color the coin tangerine with a jade emblem, and the dragon body jade to match the rest of the set.

Palette: Tangerine Orange,Jade Green,Ink Black

Since the coin scene is about devotion, pair it with a gem scene about vigilance. Draw a single faceted gem shape, a simple diamond cut with a few straight internal lines to suggest its facets, then seat the dragon beside it, chest puffed slightly, eyes wide open and alert rather than sleepy.

Keep the gem small and precise, this is one spot where a ruler helps for the straight facet lines, since a gem reads as valuable partly through its crisp geometric edges rather than soft curves. Contrast that sharpness with the dragon’s soft rounded body right next to it.

If the facet lines get confusing, simplify to just three or four lines meeting near the center rather than a fully cut gem, it still reads clearly at this size. Color the gem tangerine with a jade highlight stripe, keeping its edges crisp against the looser dragon outline.

Warm things up with a simple cozy portrait, just the dragon’s head and shoulders in a knitted hat. Draw the head first, round snout and two small ear bumps, then add the hat over the top with a folded brim and a small pompom, using short straight lines across the brim to suggest ribbed knit texture.

Keep the hat slightly too big, tipped a little to one side, that small imperfection makes it look borrowed and cozy rather than tailored. One hatching trick helps here: use short, slightly pressed strokes along the brim rather than one smooth marker fill, it gives the ribbing real texture without extra colors.

If the pompom looks flat, draw it as a cluster of small overlapping circles rather than one big dot. Color the hat tangerine with the pompom in jade for a nice swap of the usual order.

No marker for texture: a fine pencil cross hatch under the ink line works just as well for the ribbed brim.

Palette: Tangerine Orange,Jade Green,Ink Black

Carry the cozy portrait forward into a small throne scene, the dragon perched proudly on a round cushion wearing a simple crown. Draw the cushion first, a plump rounded square with a few fold lines at the corners, then seat the dragon on top, tail curled neatly in front, crown balanced on its head with three or four simple points.

Keep the crown small and slightly tilted, a perfectly centered crown looks stiff, a tilted one looks lived in. Add one or two small jewel dots on the crown’s points for a quick royal touch without drawing a complicated pattern.

If the cushion looks flat under the dragon, add a couple of short curved lines where the body presses into it, that small dip sells the softness. Color the cushion jade with a tangerine crown, swapping the usual color pairing to keep the page varied.

Palette: Jade Green,Tangerine Orange,Ink Black

Give the dragon a little talent with a brush gripped in its tail tip instead of its claws. Draw the tail first, curled up over the back and ending in a tight grip around a small paintbrush, bristles touching a tiny canvas propped in front.

Keep the canvas small, just a simple rectangle on a thin easel stand, with a couple of loose colored strokes on it rather than a finished picture, the strokes suggest the act of painting without needing real detail. Angle the dragon’s head looking back over its shoulder at the tail, that twist is what makes the joke land.

If the tail curl looks tangled, simplify it to one smooth loop rather than several overlapping curves. Color the canvas strokes in both jade and tangerine so the painting itself echoes the whole doodle’s palette.

Palette: Jade Green,Tangerine Orange,Ink Black

Bring back the dragon’s useful flame for a small celebration moment, lighting a single candle on a cupcake. Draw the cupcake first, a simple ridged wrapper, a swirl of frosting on top, and one thin candle standing in the center, then angle the dragon’s snout close to the wick with a tiny flame touching it.

Keep the dragon’s own flame small and separate from the candle flame once it catches, two tiny teardrop shapes side by side rather than one merged blob, that separation reads more clearly than overlapping fire. A few short lines radiating from the lit wick suggest the catch of the flame.

If the frosting swirl looks flat, add two or three curved lines following its spiral rather than one smooth outline. Color the wrapper tangerine, the frosting jade, and leave both flames a warm uncolored yellow gap if your markers run warm, or tint them lightly in tangerine.

Return to something warm and quiet, a dragon cupping a mug of cocoa and breathing gently on it to keep it hot. Draw the mug first, a simple rounded shape with a thick handle, a swirl of cocoa visible at the rim, then tuck the dragon’s claws around its sides with the snout tilted down close to the surface.

Draw the warm breath as a few short soft lines curling up from the mouth toward the mug rather than a sharp flame shape, the softer line is what separates a gentle warming breath from an actual fire blast. Add a tiny marshmallow or two floating on top of the cocoa for a nice finishing detail.

If the mug looks too symmetrical and stiff, tilt it a few degrees and let the handle sit slightly uneven. Color the mug tangerine, the cocoa a deep jade if you want a playful color swap, or leave it uncolored with just a swirl line.

Palette: Tangerine Orange,Jade Green,Ink Black

Switch the mood to playful curiosity with a dragon peeking out from inside an open backpack. Draw the backpack first, a simple rounded rectangle with a front pocket and an open top flap, then build just the dragon’s head and one claw gripping the rim, the rest of its body implied as hidden inside.

Keep the head tilted and eyes wide, as if caught in the middle of exploring, and let one small ear or wing tip poke over the opposite edge of the opening for a bit of extra charm. Showing only the head and one claw rather than the whole body is the quickest way to finish this one if you are short on time.

If the backpack opening looks too flat, curve its top edge inward slightly so it reads as fabric folding rather than a straight cut. Color the backpack tangerine with jade straps, keeping the dragon jade to match.

Palette: Tangerine Orange,Jade Green,Ink Black

Give the dragon a small moment of comfort after a mishap, tail wrapped in a bandage, one claw holding a lollipop like a treat for being brave. Draw the tail first with a simple wrapped bandage pattern, a few diagonal lines crossing a wide white band, then build the body sitting upright, one claw raised holding a round lollipop on a short stick.

Keep the bandaged tail held slightly off the ground rather than resting flat, that small lift reads as a tender injury without needing an unhappy face. A gentle, slightly downturned mouth is enough expression, no need to draw tears or dramatic sadness for this to feel sweet.

If the bandage pattern gets fussy, simplify to just two or three crossing lines rather than a full wrap pattern. Color the lollipop in alternating jade and tangerine spiral stripes for a nice bit of pattern practice on a small shape.

Palette: Jade Green,Tangerine Orange,Ink Black

Turn the dragon into a tiny explorer with round glasses and an unrolled map. Draw the glasses first, two simple round frames sitting on the snout, then build the map in front, held open in both claws with a slightly curled bottom edge and a few quick squiggly lines standing in for roads or a coastline.

Keep the glasses a touch too big for the face, sliding slightly down the snout, that small detail reads as studious and a little comic at once. The map’s curled edges are easier to draw if you leave the top corners straight and only curl the bottom two, full curl on all sides tends to look messy at this scale.

If the map’s squiggly lines start looking like scribble, space them out more and vary their length, three or four confident lines read better than a dense tangle. Color the glasses frames tangerine and leave the map itself a plain uncolored paper tone with jade ink lines.

Palette: Tangerine Orange,Jade Green,Ink Black

Let the dragon drift a little with a single balloon held in one claw, string trailing down. Draw the balloon first, a simple rounded teardrop shape with a knotted bottom, then attach a thin curved string running down to the dragon’s claw, leaving a gentle sag in the middle of the string rather than a straight line.

Keep the dragon’s feet planted firmly on the ground even though the balloon tugs slightly upward, that contrast between a grounded body and a floating balloon is what gives the drawing its quiet lift. A faint highlight line on the balloon’s upper curve suggests its shine.

If the string looks stiff, redraw it with a soft S curve rather than a straight line, string never hangs perfectly straight. Color the balloon tangerine with a jade string for a clean contrast, or swap colors if you prefer the balloon jade instead.

Palette: Tangerine Orange,Jade Green,Ink Black

Bring back real flight, this time successful, with a dragon soaring and a long scarf trailing behind. Draw the body stretched into a gentle diagonal glide, wings spread wide rather than flapping, then add a long scarf looped once around the neck with both ends streaming back in soft wavy curves.

Since the dragon is airborne here, think about where it sits against the page: keep it angled slightly upward, nose higher than tail, so the whole pose reads as climbing rather than falling. The scarf’s trailing ends should curve in the same general direction as the motion, never flapping forward against the glide.

If the wings look too stiff and flat, curve their trailing edges slightly downward, wings in motion are rarely perfectly straight. Color the scarf in a soft pink if you have it, or let jade and tangerine stripes stand in for it to keep the set’s two core colors.

Palette: Jade Green,Tangerine Orange,Ink Black

Settle the energy with a quiet weather scene, a dragon holding a big leaf overhead like an umbrella. Draw the leaf first, a wide heart shaped leaf with clear vein lines radiating from a central stem, then tuck the dragon underneath it, one claw gripping the stem, body hunched slightly for cover.

Keep the leaf noticeably larger than the dragon’s head and shoulders, roughly twice as wide, so it convincingly shelters the whole upper body. A few short diagonal lines falling just outside the leaf’s edge suggest light rain without needing a full rain scene.

If the leaf’s veins look too mechanical, let them branch unevenly rather than in a perfectly symmetrical pattern, real leaves are never quite even. Color the leaf jade with a tangerine stem, keeping the dragon itself a slightly lighter jade so the two don’t blend together.

Palette: Jade Green,Tangerine Orange,Ink Black

Wind the whole set down with a sleepy dragon mid yawn, hugging a pillow close. Draw the pillow first, a plump rounded square with a couple of soft fold lines, then build the dragon curled around it, mouth open wide in a yawn with a small curved tongue line, eyes squeezed into tight crescents.

Keep the yawning mouth rounder and wider than any of the other open mouth poses earlier in the set, a yawn stretches wider than a sneeze or a roar attempt, and that extra width is what makes it instantly readable as sleepy rather than startled. Fold one arm fully over the pillow’s top edge for the hug.

If the yawn looks more like a scream, soften the eyebrows into a relaxed downward curve rather than sharp peaks. Color the pillow tangerine with a jade fold line, finishing the set on a calm, soft note.

If you would like another soft bedtime style character to pair this with on the same page, the sleepy scenes in the frog doodle ideas use a similar gentle curled up pose.

Palette: Tangerine Orange,Jade Green,Ink Black

Close the set with a little performance, a dragon strumming a guitar far too big for its claws. Draw the guitar first, a simple figure eight body with a long thin neck and a handful of short straight lines across it for strings, then seat the dragon behind it, one claw resting on the neck and the other poised near the strings mid strum.

Vary this one next time by swapping the instrument entirely, the same seated pose works just as well with a tiny drum between its knees or a small set of pan pipes held to its mouth, so this single pose can become a whole little band across several pages.

If the guitar strings blur together, space them with slightly more gap between each line than feels natural, tightly packed strings read as a smudge rather than distinct lines at this small size. Color the guitar body tangerine with jade strings, letting the dragon’s own jade body blend into the instrument’s color family.

For more small characters with instruments to round out a page, the music doodle ideas cover plenty of tiny bands worth a look.

What to Do Next

Pick one dragon, any one, and start with a plain sheet of sketchbook paper and your fineliner. Work the main shape first, let the small details follow, and keep the jade and tangerine markers close by so the whole page ends up matching by the time you reach the last little dragon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pens work best for a dragon doodle like this?

A black fineliner in a fine point, around 0.3 to 0.5, gives clean outlines that still read well at small sizes. Alcohol markers in jade green and tangerine orange add just enough color without overwhelming the simple line work.

How do I keep baby dragons looking cute and not scary?

Round every shape, especially the snout, claws and wing tips, and keep the head large compared to the body. Sharp angles and long pointed teeth read as fierce, while soft curves and big eyes keep the whole character gentle and cute.

Do I need to draw the background for these dragon doodles?

No, these work best as small subjects on plain white paper with just the dragon and its one or two props. A background pulls focus away from the character and takes more time than the simple doodle style needs.

What if my dragon’s proportions look off after I start inking?

Thicken the line slightly around the area that feels wrong rather than erasing, a bit of extra line weight often fixes an awkward proportion better than a redraw. Small dragons forgive a lot since the style is already loose and rounded.

Can I color these dragon doodles with something other than markers?

Yes, colored pencils or light watercolor washes both work well over the fineliner once the ink is fully dry. Keep the color light and simple, two colors are enough to match the jade and tangerine accent style.
