Table of Contents
This moon junk journal kit gives you 29 pages built around one quiet, celestial theme: full moons over still water, old star charts, owls on branches and attic telescopes. The set runs 20 scene pages, then 4 seamless background patterns, then 5 lined writing pages, so you have everything needed to fill a whole journal without repeating a single subject.
Print on a heavier matte paper, around 90 to 120 gsm, so the washes do not show through when you glue pages back to back. Set your printer to its best or photo quality and let each sheet dry flat for a minute before handling. Trim to your journal’s page size with scissors or a paper trimmer, and keep a quarter inch margin if you plan to stitch or glue a spine.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Moon and Sea Pages
A wide moon hangs low over a calm sea, its light laid down the water in a long pale stripe, with a single boat and a few gulls far off at the edges.
Pair this one with the striped night sky background a few pages on: glue a strip of the background along the bottom edge before adding this scene, so the rooftops seem to sit above a painted horizon of their own town.
The page shows a row of old harbour rooftops under a thin crescent, with a weathervane, a chimney and a line of washing caught mid swing, the whole row silhouetted against a deep blue sky.
Tuck a pressed seaweed frond or a small tide chart torn from a newspaper onto this page before you glue it in, right along the rocky edge where the water catches the moon.
Shown here: a shallow tide pool at night, a starfish and a few shells scattered at its rim, moonlight rippling across the surface with dark rocks and a hint of shoreline behind.
The usual mistake here is treating the lighthouse beam like a hard white stripe. Keep it soft and translucent instead, so it reads as light rather than paint, and let the crescent moon stay the brightest point on the page.
Star Charts and Moon Phases
Eight small moons march in a row across an aged chart, each phase labelled in faded script, with a compass rose and a scatter of tiny stars filling the corners.
This is the page for a reader who loves junk journaling as a slow, thoughtful hobby rather than a quick craft: the wheel rewards a long unhurried look rather than a glance.
A circular zodiac wheel fills the sheet, its twelve small symbols spaced evenly around the rim, with fine constellation lines and a dusting of stars drawn inside the circle.
Glue a short note about a childhood memory of stargazing along the chart’s lower margin, where the old paper leaves the most open space for your own handwriting.
Place this page right after the zodiac wheel in your spread: the diagram’s straight lines balance the wheel’s curve nicely, and together they read like two pages torn from the same old science book.
Shown here: a cutaway diagram of an old brass telescope with its lens and tube labelled in small faded script, a few measurement notes pencilled beside it.
Night Creatures
An owl sits still on a bare branch against a thin crescent moon, a few stray feathers and a scatter of fallen leaves around its perch.
Here is the five minute version: skip trimming the edges square and instead tear them by hand before gluing this one in, so the snowy field seems to drift off the page the way it drifts off the horizon.
A fox walks alone across a moonlit snowy field, its tracks trailing behind it, a few bare trees and a pale winter moon filling the quiet sky above.
A handful of bats wheel above an old barn roof under a near full moon, with a weathervane and a cluster of climbing ivy marking the barn’s silhouette.
Who is this page for in a gift journal: the friend who keeps a kitchen garden, since the hedgehog sits among fallen apples and a low hedge rather than open wilderness.
Rooms Under the Moon
Try tea-staining just the bottom edge of this page before gluing it in: a faint brown line along the windowsill makes the old telescope and dusty floorboards look even older.
The scene shows a brass telescope angled out of an open attic window toward a full moon, with cobwebs, a stack of old books and a moth drawn near the sill.
A short prompt for this page: what would you write to someone far away tonight, under the same moon they can also see from where they are.
Pair this page with the constellation map a few pages back: fold a corner of that chart so just its edge peeks from between two books here, as if it had been pulled half off the shelf.
Shown here: a tall shelf crowded with old star atlases and globes, a small brass telescope leaning against one end, moonlight falling in a pale stripe across the spines.
The usual mistake with a window scene is painting the glass too flat. Let a faint reflection of the room show on the pane, so the crescent moon outside seems layered behind real glass.
Moon Garden and Sky Treasures
Give this page a five minute version: paint only the central moonflower bloom in full colour and leave the surrounding leaves as a soft pale wash, which still reads as a finished garden at a glance.
A cluster of pale night blooming flowers opens under moonlight, moths drifting between the petals, with a low garden wall and climbing vines filling the space behind.
A single shooting star streaks above a quiet meadow, its light caught in the dew on the grass below and a thin moon rising at the far edge of the sky.
What to tuck onto this page: a torn calendar scrap, a pressed flower or a small ticket stub, laid along the open diary’s crease where the moon phases are sketched in faded ink.
Shown here: an open diary page with small sketched moon phases down the margin, a dried flower pressed between the pages and a pencil resting in the fold.
A pale comet arcs across a field of small stars, its tail trailing behind it in a soft curve, with a distant hillside silhouette along the bottom edge of the sky.
Background Papers
Small stars and faint constellation lines scatter evenly across deep indigo and cream, ready to sit under a photo of a night sky, line the inside of a journal cover or back a star chart page.
Tiny crescent moons drift in loose rows across soft gold and dusty blue, good as a cover sheet, a backing for a moon phase chart or a border trimmed thin for page edges.
Soft horizontal bands shift from deep indigo to pale gold like dusk settling into night, suited to a cover, a photo backing or a wide band cut for a page border.
A worn paper texture carries faint printed star markings and soft foxing spots throughout, ideal behind a telescope photo, as a journal cover or lining a title page.
Lined Writing Pages
A narrow border of small moon phases runs along the top edge, with faint ruled lines below for the night’s weather, what you saw in the sky and a short line of thanks for the day.
Each corner holds a small spray of stars and a thin crescent, leaving the centre open for a gift list, a letter to next year or a wish written out in full.
A thin band of faint constellation lines runs down the left edge, with the rest of the page ruled for a packing list, a recipe tried under moonlight or a simple daily note.
A small owl perched on a branch sits in one corner inside a delicate frame, with ruled lines below for a quiet thought, a dream remembered or a short letter.
A slender telescope and a scatter of stars trail along the bottom edge, leaving space above for a star you spotted, a wish list or notes from a night outdoors.
What to Do Next
Print the full set, trim each sheet to size and start with the scene pages that speak to you most, saving the backgrounds and lined pages to round out the quieter corners of your journal.
Frequently Asked Questions
What paper works best for these moon pages?
A matte paper between 90 and 120 gsm holds the washes well without curling and is thick enough that nothing shows through once pages are glued back to back. Cardstock also works if your printer accepts it, though matte paper is easier to fold and tear for journal pages.
What printer settings give the best colour?
Choose your printer’s best or photo quality setting and select the matte or heavyweight paper option if it has one. This slows the print slightly but keeps the soft indigo and gold washes from looking streaky or pale.
What size should I print the pages?
Full letter or A4 size suits most junk journals and gives room to trim down. Print at full page size with no scaling, then trim to your journal’s exact dimensions afterward with scissors or a paper trimmer for a clean edge.
Can I add my own colour or writing on top?
Yes, these pages print fully coloured but still take a fine tip pen well for dates, captions or extra details. Coloured pencils blend into the muted palette nicely too, especially on the lined pages where there is open space to add more.
Do I need anything beyond the printable pages?
Just paper to print on, a glue stick for mounting pages into your journal, scissors or a trimmer for tidy edges, and a pen for the lined pages. Nothing else is required to use the set as it is.
