A pen art doodle is the fastest way to end a sketchbook page on a good note. Grab a fineliner and a loose hand, and in a few minutes you have a tiny character caught mid story, no sketching rules and no pressure to fill the whole page.
Below are 29 small scenes to work through, from a cat watching the moon on a chimney to a mouse dipping a quill into an inkwell. Each one is sized for one sitting, with a note on where it tends to go wrong and how to fix it before the ink sets.
Using these images: free for personal projects such as printing, coloring, cards, journals and gifts. Handmade items that include them may be sold up to 30 pieces per design. More than that is commercial use and is not permitted, and neither is selling or sharing the images themselves or passing them off as your own. Please ask before any other use.
Start with a cat watching the moon, since a sitting cat is just two ovals: a rounder one for the body wrapped around the chimney pot, a smaller one on top for the head, with triangle ears and a tail curling down the brick side. Draw the chimney pot first as a simple cylinder shape, then build the cat around it so the perching feels solid rather than balanced on thin air.
Ink the moon last as a plain crescent in the corner so your eye has somewhere to land after following the cat’s gaze. If the proportions feel off, check that the head is roughly two thirds the size of the body, which is the ratio that reads as a cat and not a kitten or a lion.
Keep the chimney bricks to three or four quick lines rather than a full grid, or the pot will fight the cat for attention. Touch the moon with a little dusty blue shadow underneath and leave the cat plain black and white.
If you only have a ballpoint pen on hand, it works fine for this one since the shapes are simple enough that line weight barely matters.

Move from rooftops to the sky with a bear leaning off the tip of a crescent moon, fishing rod cast up toward a single star. Draw the crescent first as a thick banana shape, then perch the bear on the lower point with its legs dangling, since the moon needs to look like it can actually hold the weight.
Line work goes body first, then the fishing rod as one long curved line ending in a short string and a star-shaped hook. Beginners often draw the rod stiff and straight, which flattens the whole pose, so bend it slightly like a real line under tension.
If the bear’s balance looks wrong, compare the width of the moon’s point to the bear’s seat: the moon point should be at least as wide as the bear is sitting, or it reads as floating rather than perched.
Color the star with a touch of soft red and leave the moon in plain outline so the warm dot still catches the eye first.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Soft Red
After two animals, bring in a girl with a bob haircut holding a teacup close to her face, eyes half closed like she is enjoying the warmth. Draw the head as a simple circle with the bob as a solid curved shape hugging the jaw, then place the teacup at chin height with the handle looped around one finger.
Work the face last, just two dot eyes and a small curved mouth, since over-drawing the features too early is the easiest way to lose the calm mood this pose needs. Keep the hands simple, almost mitten shaped, rather than detailing individual fingers.
If the cup looks like it is floating instead of held, draw the near hand wrapping slightly over the rim before you ink the saucer underneath.
Give the teacup a wash of dusty blue and let a thin curl of steam rise from it in a few short wavy lines.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Dusty Blue
A few short upward dashes above the cup read instantly as steam without needing to draw wisps of smoke in detail.
Switch back to a creature in flight with a crow gliding sideways, an old key hanging from its beak. Draw the body as a teardrop shape in profile, wings swept back in two pointed triangles, and the key last as a small loop and three short teeth dangling below the beak.
Crow eyes and light sit at the center of this one: decide where your light source is and put a single bright gap, left unshaded, on the top edge of the wing facing it, with the rest of the bird filled solid black. That one contrast does more work than any amount of feather detail.
If the bird looks stiff, angle the tail feathers slightly against the direction of the wings rather than lining them up straight, which gives a sense of motion mid-glide.
Mark the key with a small dusty blue dot where it catches the light, keeping the crow itself pure black ink.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Dusty Blue
Bring the scene down to ground level with a little boy in a raincoat holding an umbrella bigger than he is. Draw the umbrella first as a simple dome with six straight spoke lines, then build the boy underneath it small, so the size contrast does the storytelling.
Ink the raincoat as one rounded shape with a hood, boots as two thick ovals, and the umbrella handle as a single curved line he grips with both hands. Beginners often make the umbrella the same size as the child, which loses the charm, so exaggerate it larger than feels natural.
If the pose looks flat, angle the boy’s feet slightly apart as if leaning into wind, which gives the whole drawing a sense of weather without adding a single raindrop.
Color the raincoat in soft red and leave the umbrella in dusty blue, the two accents doing all the work against the black outline.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Soft Red,Dusty Blue
Trade the weather scene for something quieter: a snail whose shell is a tiny house, complete with a lit window. Draw the snail’s body first as a simple curved line with two eye stalks, then build the shell as a spiral, turning the last loop of the spiral into a little roof and wall instead of a plain curl.
Work the window last, a small square with cross lines for panes, since this is the detail that turns a shell into a home. If the house looks lopsided, draw a light guide circle first and fit the roof and window inside it before inking.
Keep the spiral lines loose rather than perfectly even, which actually helps it read as a cosy little building rather than a technical diagram.
Fill the window with a soft red glow and leave the rest of the shell as plain black outline, the way you would in these mushroom doodle ideas with their own tiny lit homes.

Settle things down with a cat curled asleep on top of a closed book, a classic cosy pose that is forgiving to draw. Start with the book as a simple rectangle with a slightly thicker spine line, then build the cat on top as one continuous curved shape with the tail wrapping around to touch its own nose.
Quick version: ten minutes gets you the curled outline, closed eyes as two short curves, and a few whisker lines. The forty minute version adds texture, short flicked lines along the back for fur direction and a soft fold line where the body presses into the book cover.
If the cat looks stretched rather than curled, check that the total shape fits inside a circle roughly the width of the book, since cats compress into tight loops when they sleep.
Shade the book cover in dusty blue and leave the cat in plain black, the quiet color matching the cozy art ideas that favor this kind of still, sleepy scene.

Give a small character a job to do: a mole in round glasses, holding a map open with both paws. Draw the mole’s body as a plump oval with tiny clawed feet, then the glasses as two simple circles sitting low on a pointed snout, since round glasses are what sells the studious look instantly.
Ink the map last as a folded rectangle with a few wavy lines standing in for roads and a small x mark, held up close to the face as if the mole is squinting at the detail. If the glasses look crooked, draw a light horizontal guideline across the snout first and set both lenses on it before inking.
Beginners sometimes make the paws too thin to hold anything convincingly, so widen them slightly where they grip the map’s edges.
Color the map in dusty blue and keep the mole itself black and white so the glasses stay the clear focal point.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Dusty Blue
Return to the sky with a girl sitting on the curve of a crescent moon, feet dangling off the edge. Draw the moon first as a thick crescent lying on its back like a hammock, then seat the girl inside the dip of the curve so gravity makes sense, legs hanging over the lower point.
Her eye level matters here: since she is looking down at her own dangling feet, tilt her head slightly forward rather than straight ahead, which immediately reads as someone enjoying the view below rather than staring blankly out.
Ink her dress or coat as one simple triangle shape, hands resting on the moon’s edge for balance, hair falling forward with the tilt of her head.
Add a soft red bow or scarf for a single warm accent against the black and dusty blue moon, and keep stars around her to no more than two or three small dots.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Dusty Blue,Soft Red
Shift to an object with a twist: a teapot with a tiny tree growing straight out of its spout. Draw the teapot body first as a rounded shape with a simple curved handle and a short spout, then build the tree from the spout tip upward, trunk first, with a small round canopy of leaves.
The trick with this one is proportion: keep the tree small enough that the teapot still reads clearly as a teapot, roughly a third of the pot’s height, or the whole idea gets lost in a tangle of branches.
If the lid looks disconnected from the body, draw a thin connecting line or small knob where it sits, since teapot lids need a clear seam to read correctly.
Color the tree canopy in dusty blue for a slightly unusual, dreamlike feel, and leave the teapot in plain black outline with one soft red stripe around its middle.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Dusty Blue,Soft Red
Send a cat into space next, suited up and cradling a small planet like a ball. Draw the round helmet first as a circle with a smaller inner circle for the face, since getting that double circle right early keeps the whole head from looking lumpy later.
Build the suit as a simple rounded body shape with short sleeve puffs at the shoulders, then add the planet last, held in both paws, with one or two simple ring lines around it if you want a Saturn look.
If the helmet glass looks flat, leave a small curved gap unshaded near the top edge to suggest a reflection, the same single highlight trick that works on any round glass or metal surface.
Give the planet a dusty blue fill with a soft red ring, and keep the suit itself in plain black and white.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Dusty Blue,Soft Red
Keep the sky theme going with a mouse riding in the basket of a hot air balloon. Draw the balloon envelope first as a large rounded teardrop, then the basket as a small woven rectangle hanging below on four thin lines, and finally the mouse peeking over the basket rim with just its head and paws visible.
Quick version: ten minutes gets the balloon outline, basket, and mouse head. The forty minute version adds a few vertical stripe lines on the balloon fabric and some small woven texture marks on the basket, which make it feel more dimensional without much extra time.
If the balloon looks like it is sinking rather than floating, make sure the basket sits well below center, closer to the bottom third of the balloon shape, since baskets that sit too high read as attached rather than hanging.
Color alternating balloon stripes in dusty blue and soft red for a cheerful striped effect against the black lines.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Dusty Blue,Soft Red
Bring in a quieter pairing: a deer standing still with a little bird perched on one antler. Draw the deer’s head and neck first in profile, antlers branching out as a few simple forked lines, then perch the bird on the highest branch, small and round so it reads as light enough to balance there.
Never draw the bird tangled into the antler lines or nested behind it, keep it sitting cleanly on top of one branch so both shapes stay readable where they meet. If the antlers look too busy, limit each side to two or three forks rather than a full branching tree.
Beginners sometimes make the deer’s neck too short, so stretch it slightly longer than feels natural, which gives the pose its calm, alert look.
Leave the deer in plain black outline and give the small bird a soft red chest for the only warm note in the piece, a pairing that works well alongside the animal moments in these bear painting ideas.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Soft Red
Move to the water with a dog in a sailor cap, sitting upright in a simple paper boat. Draw the boat first as a folded triangle shape, the classic paper boat silhouette, then seat the dog inside it with paws resting on the rim, cap tilted slightly for character.
Ink the water last as a few loose wavy lines beneath the boat, kept simple so they do not compete with the dog. If the boat looks like it is tipping, keep its base line level and flat against an imaginary horizon, even if the waves around it curve.
Beginners often draw the sailor cap too large for the head, so size it to just cover the top third of the skull, leaving the ears and face clear.
Color the cap band in soft red and the water lines in dusty blue, leaving the dog itself plain black outline.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Soft Red,Dusty Blue
Bring the water indoors with a girl carrying a round goldfish bowl in both arms, walking carefully. Draw the bowl first as a simple circle with a slightly flattened bottom, add one small fish shape and a wavy water line inside, then build the girl’s arms wrapped around it from below.
Her eye level sits lower than the bowl here since she is watching it closely as she walks, so angle her face slightly downward, which keeps the whole pose feeling careful rather than casual.
If the bowl looks like it is floating free of her arms, draw her elbows bent and hands meeting underneath to visibly support the weight before inking the rest of her body.
Fill the bowl water in dusty blue and give the fish a small soft red body, the single bright shape the whole drawing leads to.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Dusty Blue,Soft Red
Draw the water line inside the bowl slightly tilted rather than perfectly horizontal, which sells the sense of careful walking without a single extra line.
Give a cat a hobby next: sitting upright at a small piano, paws resting on the keys. Draw the piano first as a simple box shape with a slightly raised lid, then add a row of short vertical lines for keys before placing the cat on a tiny stool in front of it.
Keep the keyboard to around eight or nine key lines rather than a full realistic set, since too many thin lines will blur together at this size and read as noise instead of piano keys.
If the cat’s paws look like they are hovering, rest at least two fingers directly on top of two separate key lines before you ink over them, which anchors the pose convincingly.
Color the piano body in dusty blue and leave the keys in plain black and white for contrast, with the cat itself kept simple.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Dusty Blue
Take the story to the coast with a mouse lighthouse keeper standing on a rock, holding up a lantern. Draw the mouse first in a simple coat shape with round ears peeking from under a little hood, then build the lantern as a small square frame with a curved handle, held high at arm’s length.
Light placement does the real work here: since the lantern is the only light source, leave a small unshaded halo around it and shade the mouse’s coat slightly darker on the side facing away from the lantern, which instantly suggests glow without any yellow marker at all.
If the rock beneath feels like an afterthought, give it two or three angular lines rather than a smooth curve, since jagged edges read as coastal rock more clearly than soft ones.
Fill the lantern light in soft red for warmth and keep the rest of the scene in black and dusty blue tones.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Soft Red,Dusty Blue
Return to something quick and small: a sparrow perched on the rim of a teacup, head tilted as if listening. Draw the teacup first as a simple rounded shape with a handle, then perch the bird along the top edge with its feet gripping the rim, tail pointing slightly outward for balance.
This is a good ten minute sketch as is, just the cup outline, the bird in a few curved lines, and a short beak. The forty minute version adds a thin steam curl rising from the cup and a few short feather strokes along the bird’s wing for texture.
If the bird looks like it is sliding off, make sure its feet sit directly on the rim line rather than hovering just above it, since even a small gap breaks the illusion of weight.
Color the cup in dusty blue and give the sparrow a touch of soft red on its chest, a small pairing that works well beside these hot chocolate drawing ideas for a cosy page spread.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Dusty Blue,Soft Red
Give a dog somewhere to go: wrapped in a scarf, walking along with a small suitcase in one paw. Draw the dog’s body first in a simple standing side profile, then wrap the scarf around the neck as a few loose loops with two tails hanging down, finishing with the suitcase as a small rectangle swinging from the front paw.
Beginners often draw the walking legs too stiff and parallel, so stagger them slightly, one forward and one back, which gives the whole figure a sense of mid-stride.
If the suitcase looks stuck to the paw rather than held, add a short curved handle line clearly gripped between the toes before inking the rest of the paw around it.
Color the scarf in soft red with a dusty blue suitcase for a travel-ready palette, and keep the dog itself in plain black outline.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Soft Red,Dusty Blue
Slow things down with a bear lying in a hammock, book held open overhead. Draw the hammock first as a wide curved sling shape slung between two short posts or tree trunks at the edges of the page, then lay the bear inside it, body sinking into the curve of the fabric.
The hammock curve is the trick to get right: if the bear looks like it is lying on a flat surface instead, deepen the sag of the hammock line so it dips lower than the bear’s shoulders, which makes the fabric read as soft and supportive.
Ink the open book last, held above the bear’s face at arm’s length, pages shown as two simple curved rectangles.
Color the hammock fabric in dusty blue stripes and leave the bear in plain black and white, a scene that fits right alongside the slow afternoons in these cozy art ideas.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Dusty Blue
Pick up the pace with a girl running mid-stride, a paper kite trailing behind her on a long string. Draw the kite first as a simple diamond shape with a short tail of small triangle flags, then build the girl beneath it leaning forward, one leg bent and one stretched back to show real motion.
Her hair and the kite tail should both stream in the same direction, which is the single detail that sells wind and speed more than anything else in the drawing. Keep the string between her hand and the kite as one slightly curved line rather than straight, since a taut straight line looks stiff.
If the running pose looks flat, raise her back heel off the ground entirely rather than resting it flat, which is what separates a walk from a run.
Color the kite in soft red and leave the girl in plain black outline with loose, quick hair lines.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Soft Red
Bring the mood back down indoors with a cat sitting in a bathtub, unimpressed, a small rubber duck floating beside it. Draw the tub first as a simple oval with short curved feet underneath, then seat the cat inside with ears pinned slightly back, the classic look of a cat that did not choose to be there.
Ink the rubber duck last, a tiny round body and head shape floating on a few wavy water lines, kept small so it stays a side detail rather than competing with the cat’s expression.
If the water looks solid rather than liquid, leave gaps in the wavy lines rather than drawing one continuous line across the tub, since broken lines read as reflective surface more convincingly.
Color the duck in soft red for a bold pop of color and shade the water in dusty blue, keeping the cat itself plain black and white for contrast.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Soft Red,Dusty Blue
Switch to something mechanical with a small boxy robot carefully watering a single flower from a tiny can. Draw the robot first as a simple rectangle body with short jointed arm and leg lines, round eyes, and antenna, then add the watering can in one hand, tilted down toward a single flower beside its feet.
Perspective matters here since the robot is looking down at the flower: tilt its head slightly forward and angle the watering can’s spout downward, which makes the pouring action clear even with just a few short drip lines.
If the robot looks too rigid, round off the corners of the body and limb shapes slightly rather than keeping them sharp rectangles, which softens the character without losing the robot feel.
Color the water drips in dusty blue and give the flower a soft red bloom, the only warm note in an otherwise metallic black and white scene.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Dusty Blue,Soft Red
Give a tiny scholar a moment of focus: a mouse dipping a quill feather into a small inkwell, mid-letter. Draw the inkwell first as a short rounded jar with a narrow neck, then the quill as one long curved feather shape, nib dipping just below the jar’s rim, with the mouse seated beside it holding the feather carefully.
Quick version: ten minutes covers the mouse, inkwell, and quill outline. The forty minute version adds a half finished letter on a small scroll beside the mouse, with a few wavy lines standing in for handwriting, which gives the scene a sense of an ongoing task.
If the quill looks stiff, curve the feather shaft gently rather than keeping it straight, since even dip pens have a slight natural bend.
Color the ink inside the jar in dusty blue and leave the feather and mouse in plain black outline for contrast.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Dusty Blue
Send another character flying, this time a girl with long streaming hair riding on top of a paper plane like a glider. Draw the paper plane first as a simple folded triangle shape with sharp angled wings, then seat the girl along its back, arms out for balance, hair and dress both sweeping backward in the same direction as the flight.
Matching the direction of her hair, dress, and the plane’s implied motion is the detail that makes this read as flying rather than simply sitting on top of a toy, so keep all three sweeping the same way.
If the plane looks like it is nose-diving, keep its front point angled slightly upward rather than level, which gives the whole pose a sense of climbing rather than falling.
Color the plane’s fold lines in dusty blue and leave the girl’s dress in soft red for the one warm shape against the sky.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Dusty Blue,Soft Red
Bring in a small insect musician: a cricket standing on its back legs, playing a tiny violin tucked under its chin. Draw the cricket’s body first as a simple curved oval with long bent back legs for balance, then add the violin as a small elongated shape held against the chin, with the bow drawn as one thin diagonal line across the strings.
Getting the proportion right matters since crickets have long legs relative to a small body: measure the back leg length against the body and make it at least as long, bending it sharply at the joint, which is what keeps the pose recognizable as a cricket rather than a generic bug.
If the violin looks too large, size it to roughly the length of the cricket’s head, since anything bigger overwhelms the small figure.
Color the violin body in soft red and leave the cricket in plain black outline with a few thin antennae lines.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Soft Red
Bring back a cat for a closer look, this time peering at a small beetle through a magnifying glass held in one paw. Draw the magnifying glass first as a simple circle on a handle, then place the beetle directly behind the lens, slightly enlarged compared to how small it would actually be, since the lens is meant to visibly magnify it.
That size jump is the whole trick of this idea: draw the beetle small outside the lens circle as a guide, then redraw it noticeably bigger inside the circle, which makes the magnifying effect read instantly.
Position the cat’s face close behind the glass with one eye slightly widened, since an exaggerated single eye sells curiosity better than a symmetrical expression.
Color the beetle’s shell in soft red and leave the magnifying glass rim in dusty blue, keeping the cat itself plain black and white.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Soft Red,Dusty Blue
Close out the sky characters with a sleepy crescent moon wearing a nightcap, holding a small candle. Draw the crescent shape first, then add a simple round face directly onto the curve, droopy eyes and a small yawning mouth, before topping it with a pointed nightcap that flops slightly to one side.
If you want to vary this one next time, try swapping the candle for a tiny lantern, or turn the crescent into a full round moon face instead, both of which keep the sleepy expression but change the whole silhouette.
Beginners sometimes draw the nightcap stiff and upright, so let the tip flop down past the moon’s edge, which instantly reads as soft fabric rather than a rigid hat.
Color the candle flame in soft red and the nightcap in dusty blue, leaving the moon’s face in plain black outline for a calm finish.
Palette: Black Fineliner,Soft Red,Dusty Blue
End the set on a quiet note with a boy holding up a small jar, a single firefly glowing inside. Draw the jar first as a simple rounded shape with a lid, then place one small firefly dot inside with a tiny glow ring around it, before building the boy’s arms raised to hold the jar at eye level.
Keep the firefly to just one with a soft halo rather than a cluster of several, since a single glowing point reads as a quiet, held moment, where a swarm would turn it into a different kind of scene entirely.
If the boy’s expression feels flat, tilt his head slightly to one side as he watches the jar, the same small gesture that works on the girl with the teacup earlier in this list.
Color the firefly glow in soft red for warmth, add a touch of dusty blue to the night background if you want one, and finish there.

What to Do Next
Pick one idea from this list, open to a clean page, and draw the biggest shape first rather than starting with small details. A sketchbook that takes a fineliner well without bleeding makes the whole process easier, so start there and work through a few more ideas once the first one feels good.
Frequently Asked Questions
What pens work best for a pen art doodle?
A black fineliner in a fine tip, around 0.3 to 0.5, gives clean, controlled lines for small characters. Add a couple of alcohol markers or colored pencils in just one or two accent colors to keep the doodle simple rather than fully painted.
How do I stop my doodle from looking stiff?
Draw the main shape loosely before adding any detail, and let lines wobble slightly rather than aiming for ruler-straight edges. Stiffness usually comes from drawing outlines too slowly, so sketch faster and commit to the pen sooner.
Do I need to sketch in pencil first?
Not for these simple subjects, since most beginners find going straight to pen keeps the line lively and loose. If a pose feels tricky, a very light pencil guide for the main shapes is fine before inking over it.
How much color should I add to a pen art doodle?
Keep color to small flat patches on one or two details, like a scarf, a flame or a single flower, rather than filling the whole drawing. The black ink should still carry most of the scene on its own.
How long should one doodle take?
Most of these ideas finish in ten to twenty minutes once you know the shapes, with a slower forty minute version if you add texture and small extra details. Speed comes with repetition, so the first few in a sitting may take longer.
