28 Koi Fish Painting Ideas for Japanese Garden Ponds and Lucky Little Scenes

39

A koi fish painting is one of the most satisfying things you can finish in an afternoon: a few bold fish shapes, some loose ripples, and suddenly you have a whole quiet garden pond on canvas. The fish carry the picture, so you do not need perfect backgrounds or fussy detail to get something that glows.

Below are 28 koi scenes to choose from, starting with simple pairs of fish and building up to fuller garden moments with bridges, lanterns, and falling leaves. Pick whichever pond calls to you today, mix the oranges and jade greens on your palette, and let the water stay loose and bright underneath.

Start simple with two koi circling each other, nose to tail, in a loose ring shape. Sketch two long S-curves on canvas with a pencil so the fish mirror each other, then block in one orange-red fish and one white-and-black fish with flat acrylic shapes before any detail goes on top.

Work water first if you want clean edges: lay a pale blue-green wash over the whole canvas and let it dry, then paint the fish on top so their outlines stay crisp. Add fins and a few scale marks last with a small round brush, using a darker tone along the top edge of each body for form.

The circle often goes lopsided if you do not check it as you build. Hold your brush at arm’s length and compare the gap between the two fish on each side; even them out before you commit to fins and detail.

If you are new to painting fish, keep both bodies the same size so the circling feels balanced rather than like one fish chasing the other.

Once you are comfortable with a single fish shape, add lily pads floating above koi swimming beneath the surface. Paint the water first in soft blue-green washes, then drop in two or three koi half hidden under the pads, letting their tails and heads peek out at different depths.

Paint the lily pads as flat, simple ovals in jade green sitting on top of the dried water layer, with one darker green line down the center of each to suggest the fold. Bring the koi in last so their edges slip slightly under the pad shapes rather than sitting beside them.

It is easy to make every pad and fish the same size, which flattens the whole scene. Vary pad sizes and overlap a couple of them, and let one koi sit further back and smaller so the pond reads as having real depth.

If you do not have a round brush small enough for pad veins, the edge of a flat brush dragged lightly works just as well. If you enjoy painting floating plants and reflections, the watercolor pond ideas collection has more quiet pond compositions to borrow from.

Bring in a little architecture with a koi pond with a red bridge arching over the water in the background. Block in the bridge shape first as a simple curved rectangle in bright red-orange, keeping it toward the top third of the canvas so the water and fish still dominate the frame.

Paint the water next in horizontal strokes of pale blue and green, then add two or three koi in the foreground, large and bold, so they sit clearly in front of the bridge rather than competing with it.

The bridge can easily look flat and stuck-on if it has no reflection. Drag a thin, broken line of the same red color straight down into the water under the bridge to tie it into the pond.

For an easy swap, paint the bridge posts as two simple verticals instead of a full railing; it reads just as clearly at a glance and takes far less time.

Palette: Vermilion,Jade Green,Soft Blue,Cadmium Orange

Add a person to the pond with a girl feeding koi from a wooden deck, her hand reaching toward the water as fish gather below. Paint the deck planks first as a simple strip of warm brown horizontal lines along one edge of the canvas, then sketch her figure sitting or kneeling at the edge in a few simple shapes before adding color.

Keep her clothing flat and simple, a soft kimono-style wrap in one solid color, so she does not pull attention away from the fish. Paint three or four koi clustered just below her hand, overlapping slightly to suggest they are jostling for food.

Figures often go wrong at the hands, so keep hers simple: a rounded mitt shape with maybe one suggested finger line is enough at this scale. If faces feel daunting, turn her head slightly away or down toward the water so you only need to suggest a profile.

If you enjoy painting quiet figures in gardens, the Japanese street scene paintings have more ideas for figures in this style.

Shift your viewpoint with koi seen from above, their bodies foreshortened into ovals with ripples spreading around them. This is where an eye-level choice really changes the painting: looking straight down means no fins in profile, just rounded backs, and ripples replace reflections as your main texture.

Paint the water as a flat pale blue-green field first, then add two or three koi as simple almond and oval shapes scattered across the canvas at different angles, never lined up in a row. Add ripple rings around each fish with a thin brush loaded with white or pale blue, working in loose, slightly broken circles rather than perfect compasses.

From above, color patches read as spots rather than stripes, so keep kohaku-style patterns as rounded blotches across the back instead of bands down the side.

If circles intimidate you, trace a coin or small lid lightly in pencil for the ripple guides before painting over them freehand.

Let one fish take the spotlight with a golden koi among lotus flowers, its pale yellow-gold body gliding past two or three blooms. Paint the lotus flowers first as layered pink petal shapes rising above the water line, then add flat lily pads around their base before the water goes in around everything.

Once the flowers are dry, paint the water in soft blue-green and bring the golden koi through the center, its body a long curved shape with a single warm gold tone and just a touch of white along the belly for lift.

Gold can turn muddy fast if you mix it from too many colors. Keep it simple: yellow ochre with a touch of white and a whisper of orange is enough, and keep your brush clean between the koi and the darker water around it.

If you do not have yellow ochre, a mix of cadmium yellow and a tiny touch of burnt sienna gives a similar warm gold.

Bring in a season with koi under falling maple leaves drifting down onto a quiet pond. Paint the water first in cool blue-green, then add two koi swimming beneath the surface in warm orange and white, keeping their shapes simple so the leaves have room to be the star.

Once the water layer is dry, scatter small red and orange maple leaf shapes across the top of the canvas and let a few sit on the water’s surface, flattened slightly, while others fall mid-air above it.

Leaves often end up looking too uniform if you paint them all facing the same way. Turn a few sideways and let one or two overlap a koi’s back so it feels like they are actually drifting down rather than stuck on.

A dry brush loaded with a little burnt sienna, dragged lightly over a leaf’s edge, gives it a slightly crisp, curling look without extra detail work.

Step out of the water for a moment with koinobori carp streamers flying over a house, their long fabric bodies rippling in the wind above rooftops. Paint a simple house shape low in the frame first, just a roofline and a wall or two in muted tones, then add a tall pole rising above it.

From the pole, paint three or four streamer carp in different sizes trailing out sideways, each one a long tapered tube shape in a different solid color: black, red, and blue work well together. Add simple banded stripes and round eyes once the base shapes are dry.

Streamers look stiff if they are painted perfectly straight. Give each one a gentle curve along its body, as if caught mid-ripple in a breeze, and vary the curves slightly so they do not look identical.

If you are short on canvas space, three streamers reads just as festively as five and keeps the composition cleaner.

Add motion with a koi leaping up a small waterfall, its body arched mid-air against falling water. Paint the rocks and waterfall first, keeping the falling water as loose vertical strokes of white and pale blue over a darker rock shape, then let it dry before adding the fish.

Paint the koi in a strong curved leap shape, body arched like a comma, with its tail still touching the base of the falls and its head reaching upward. A streak of white along its lower edge suggests the spray catching the light as it jumps.

The quick version, done in about ten minutes, is just the leaping koi and a simple curtain of falling water behind it. Given forty minutes, add rocks at the base, a few splash droplets flicked on with a toothbrush, and ripples where the fish last touched the pool.

Keep the leap at a steep diagonal rather than a gentle curve; it reads as far more dramatic and energetic.

You Will Need

• toothbrush for splatter

Slow the pace again with koi near temple stepping stones, drifting past flat grey stones set into the edge of the pond. Paint the stepping stones first as simple flattened ovals in muted grey, arranged in a loose diagonal line from one corner toward the center.

Once dry, paint the water around and between the stones in soft blue-green, then bring two koi swimming near the stones, their bodies curving slightly to follow the line the stones create across the canvas.

Stones can look like they are floating if they have no shadow. A thin crescent of darker grey along one edge of each stone, where it meets the water, grounds it instantly.

If grey feels flat on its own, warm it slightly with a touch of burnt sienna so the stones feel sun-worn rather than cold.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Burnt Sienna,Jade Green,Cadmium Orange

Zoom right in with a red and white kohaku koi close-up, the fish filling most of the canvas so every patch of color gets room to breathe. Block in the white base of the body first, then add the red patches on top in a few confident, irregular shapes rather than neat stripes; real kohaku markings are never symmetrical.

Once the body color is dry, paint the fins last in a pale, slightly translucent white with thin grey lines suggesting the fin rays, and add a single dark round eye near the head.

Measure before you commit to the patches: hold your brush up against the canvas and compare the head length to the body length, since kohaku markings often get crowded onto a body painted too short to hold them properly.

If your red looks too flat, let a little of the white show through at the edges of each patch for a softer, more natural blend.

Palette: Titanium White,Vermilion,Payne’s Grey,Mars Black

Give the water some movement with a butterfly koi with long flowing fins trailing behind it like ribbons. Paint the body first in a simple curved shape, then build the fins separately as long, soft, wavy strips extending out from the body, each one tapering to a point and overlapping slightly as they trail.

Let the fins curve in slightly different directions, as if caught in a gentle current, rather than mirroring each other exactly. A thin white or grey line down the center of each fin, added once the color is dry, suggests the fin’s structure without overworking it.

The fins can swallow the whole fish if you paint them too large at once. Block in the body and head completely first, then add the fins afterward so you can judge their length against a fish that already looks finished.

If ribbon-like fins feel tricky, a dry brush dragged lightly along each fin’s edge softens it instantly into something fluid.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Titanium White,Jade Green,Soft Blue

Try an ogon-style solid gold butterfly koi next time instead of orange and white, for a completely different, more minimal look with the same flowing fins.

Bring weather into the scene with raindrops on a koi pond, each drop sending out a small ring across the surface. Paint the water first in soft, slightly darker blue-green than usual, since overcast light reads cooler, then add two koi swimming calmly just beneath the surface.

Once the water layer is dry, paint small ripple rings scattered across the surface using a thin brush loaded with pale blue-white, keeping each ring slightly irregular rather than a perfect circle. Add a few small dots just above each ring to suggest the raindrop itself still falling.

Too many evenly spaced rings can look more like polka dots than rain. Cluster some rings close together and leave open gaps elsewhere, the way real rain actually falls.

If pure white rings look too stark, mix a touch of the pond’s own blue into your white so each ring blends softly into the water around it.

Palette: Soft Blue,Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Orange,Titanium White

Add a quiet character with a cat watching koi from the edge, perched low at the water’s rim with its gaze fixed downward. Paint the cat first as a simple curled or crouched shape in solid color, keeping the pose compact with ears up and tail wrapped close to the body.

Once the cat is blocked in, paint the water and koi below, angling one fish so it swims close to the surface right under the cat’s line of sight, which ties the two parts of the painting together.

Cats often end up looking stiff if the head is painted straight on. Tilt it slightly downward and forward instead, toward the water, so the whole pose reads as genuinely watching rather than just sitting nearby.

If cat anatomy feels tricky, the step by step cat drawing guide is a helpful reference for the crouch and head angle before you paint.

Widen the view with a city garden koi pond in Kyoto, where a small formal garden pond sits framed by trimmed shrubs and maybe a glimpse of tiled rooftops beyond. Paint the background shapes first: soft green hedges, a hint of grey roofline, and perhaps a stone lantern, all kept simple and low in detail.

Once the background is dry, paint the pond itself taking up the lower half of the canvas, and bring two or three koi swimming across it in bold color so they stay the clear focal point against the quieter garden behind them.

Gardens can easily become busier than the pond itself. Keep background shapes flat and unfussy, and save your most detailed brushwork entirely for the fish.

If a full garden background feels like too much, a single trimmed hedge shape and a strip of pale sky is enough to suggest the setting.

Palette: Jade Green,Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Orange,Soft Blue

Add a playful moment with a koi blowing a bubble at the water’s surface, its mouth rounded just at the waterline. Paint the fish first in profile with its head tilted slightly upward, mouth painted as a small open circle right at the surface line.

Once the body is dry, add a single small bubble rising just above the mouth, a pale circle with a tiny white highlight dot, and maybe one or two smaller bubbles trailing above it to suggest it just surfaced.

The quick ten-minute version is just the fish and one bubble on plain water. With forty minutes, add a faint ripple ring where the mouth breaks the surface and a soft reflection of the fish’s color just beneath it.

If circles feel uneven freehand, the cap of a paint tube or a small coin pressed lightly in pencil first gives you a clean bubble outline to paint over.

You Will Need

• small round object to trace for bubble

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Titanium White,Soft Blue,Payne’s Grey

Scale the whole scene down with koi in a stone basin, a small round or octagonal water basin holding just a fish or two rather than a full pond. Paint the stone basin first as a simple rounded container shape in grey, with a darker band along its inner rim to suggest depth and thickness.

Once dry, paint the water filling the basin in a lighter blue-green than the stone, then add one or two small koi swimming inside it, their bodies curved to fit the round shape of the container.

The basin can look two-dimensional if the rim has no thickness. Paint a visible lip of stone along the top edge, slightly lighter where light catches it, before adding the water inside.

A swap for the stone grey: a warm taupe mixed from burnt sienna and white gives an aged, weathered look if your grey feels too cold.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Jade Green,Cadmium Orange,Titanium White

Shift the light for paper lanterns reflected in a koi pond at dusk, where warm glowing lantern shapes hang above the water and their color spills down into reflections below. Paint the sky and water first in deepening blue-purple tones, darker than your usual pond, since this scene reads at dusk rather than daylight.

Once that base is dry, add two or three simple round or cylindrical lanterns glowing warm orange along the top edge of the canvas, then paint soft vertical streaks of that same orange straight down into the water beneath each one for their reflection.

Koi can disappear against a dark pond if painted too late in the process. Add them before the final glazes of deep blue so you can let a thin, transparent layer of dusk color pass over everything, keeping the fish visible but moodier.

If mixing dusk colors feels daunting, the easy sunset sky ideas have useful color mixes for warm light against a darkening sky.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Cadmium Orange,Soft Blue,Titanium White

Bring a small human moment in with a child pointing at the koi, leaning over the pond’s edge with one arm outstretched. Paint the child’s figure first in a few simple rounded shapes, keeping the pose leaning forward with one arm extended downward toward the water, and clothing in a single bright, solid color.

Once the figure is blocked in, paint the water and koi below, bringing one fish close to the surface right beneath the pointing hand so the connection between the two is obvious at a glance.

Children’s proportions trip people up more than adults’ do: keep the head slightly larger relative to the body than feels natural, since that is what reads as childlike rather than just a small adult.

If full faces feel hard to paint convincingly, show the child from behind or in profile, which keeps the focus on the gesture rather than the features.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Soft Blue,Titanium White,Jade Green

Return to a quieter mood with koi under a pine tree, its dark branches reaching into frame from one corner above the water. Paint the pine branch first along the top edge of the canvas, using small clustered dabs of dark green for the needles rather than painting each one individually.

Once the branch is dry, paint the pond beneath it, letting a soft shadow fall across one section of the water where the branch overhangs, and keep the rest of the pond lighter where sunlight reaches it directly.

Where the light sits changes this painting completely: if the sun comes from the opposite side to the branch, the shadow falls where the koi are swimming, giving you a nice excuse to deepen the water color right around the fish for contrast.

A fan brush, if you have one, makes quick work of pine needle clusters with just a light dabbing motion.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Jade Green,Cadmium Orange,Soft Blue

Add a second creature with koi and a turtle sharing a rock, the turtle basking just above the waterline while fish pass below. Paint the rock first as a simple rounded grey shape breaking the surface of the water, then add the turtle on top in a flattened oval shell shape with small simple legs tucked under it.

Once the turtle is dry, paint the water around the rock and bring one or two koi swimming past just beneath, their bodies passing close to the rock’s base to connect the two elements of the scene.

Turtle shells can look flat without a hint of pattern. A few curved lines dividing the shell into simple segments, added once the base shell color is dry, is enough texture without overworking it.

If you prefer, swap the rock for a low log instead; the composition works exactly the same way with a different resting spot.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Jade Green,Cadmium Orange,Burnt Sienna

Build some real energy with koi crowding with open mouths at feeding time, a tight cluster of fish all reaching toward the surface. Sketch five or six overlapping koi shapes first, varying their sizes and angles so the cluster feels dense rather than neatly arranged, then block in a mix of orange, white, and black bodies.

Paint the open mouths as small dark ovals right at the surface line on two or three of the fish, which instantly signals feeding time without needing any food or hand in the scene at all.

Overlapping fish can turn into a confusing tangle fast. Paint the fish closest to the viewer completely first, then tuck each fish behind it slightly underneath, working backward so the overlaps stay clear and readable.

If the scene feels overwhelming, start with four fish instead of six; the crowding effect still reads clearly with fewer shapes to manage.

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Titanium White,Mars Black,Jade Green

Take a mythical turn with a koi turning into a dragon, half the body still fish, half shifting into a serpentine dragon form rising from the water. Paint the koi half first, a recognizable fish head and front body in classic orange and white, then let the back half stretch and lengthen into a sinuous dragon tail with small simple whisker shapes near the head.

Once the base shapes are dry, add a few curling cloud or mist shapes in white around the transformation point, which helps the eye accept the shift from fish to dragon without it looking like an error.

The transition point is where this goes wrong most often: keep it gradual, letting scales and color blend smoothly across the middle rather than cutting sharply from one form to the other.

If a full dragon body feels ambitious, a shorter, more curled tail still tells the story and takes much less canvas space to complete.

This legend-inspired piece pairs well as a companion to a plainer kohaku portrait if you want two contrasting koi paintings hung side by side.

Frame the whole scene with a koi pond seen through a tea house window, the pond visible through a simple square or round window opening with a hint of dark interior around it. Paint the window frame and dark interior edges first, leaving the center area blank, then paint the koi pond scene entirely within that framed opening.

Keep the interior framing simple: a plain dark border is enough, with maybe a single soft shape suggesting a shoji screen panel to one side.

The framing device can swallow the pond if the border gets too wide or detailed. Keep the frame narrow and the interior nearly flat in color, so almost the whole canvas stays devoted to the bright pond glimpsed beyond it.

If round windows feel tricky to keep even, trace a plate or large lid lightly in pencil before painting the frame over it.

You Will Need

• plate or lid to trace for round window

Palette: Mars Black,Jade Green,Cadmium Orange,Soft Blue

Bring in tall flowers with koi in a pond edged with irises, their purple-blue blooms rising along one side of the water. Paint the iris stems and leaves first as tall thin vertical shapes in deep green along one edge of the canvas, then add the flower heads in layered purple-blue petal shapes at varying heights so they do not line up like a fence.

Once the irises are dry, paint the pond filling the rest of the canvas, bringing two koi swimming near the base of the flowers so their stems appear to rise right out of the water’s edge.

Irises can look stiff if every stem is the same height. Vary the heights and let one or two lean slightly, and tuck a leaf or bud behind a main bloom to add a little depth to the cluster.

If purple feels tricky to mix cleanly, a touch of white added to a violet straight from the tube keeps it fresh rather than grey.

Palette: Jade Green,Soft Blue,Cadmium Orange,Titanium White

Cool the whole palette down with koi in a winter pond with snow on the rocks, a hush settling over the scene even as the fish stay bright below. Paint the rocks first in grey, then cap each one with a simple soft white snow shape along its top edge before the water goes in around them.

Once the rocks are dry, paint the water in a slightly deeper, cooler blue than your usual pond, since winter light reads colder, and bring one or two koi swimming through it in their full warm color for contrast against all that cool grey and white.

The scene can read as flat midwinter grey if the koi color is muted to match. Keep the fish as warm and saturated as ever; the contrast between icy surroundings and a glowing orange koi is the whole point of this piece.

If you enjoy cold, quiet winter scenes, the winter painting ideas collection has more seasonal inspiration to pair with this one.

Palette: Payne’s Grey,Titanium White,Soft Blue,Cadmium Orange

Close with symbolism in a koi pair with a pearl, two fish curling toward each other around a single glowing pearl shape. Paint the two koi first in a loose yin-yang style curl, heads pointing toward opposite ends, then leave a small gap between them at the center for the pearl.

Once the fish are dry, paint the pearl as a simple round shape in soft white with a touch of pale blue shadow on one side and a small bright highlight dot, letting it sit right in the gap the two fish curve around.

The curl can lose its shape if the fish bodies are painted too straight. Exaggerate the curve more than feels natural at first; it tightens up once fins and detail are added and settles into a graceful circle.

A dab of white gel pen over the dried acrylic gives the pearl’s highlight a cleaner, more glowing dot than paint alone often achieves.

You Will Need

• white gel pen

Palette: Cadmium Orange,Titanium White,Soft Blue,Mars Black

Finish gently with tiny koi fry in the shallows, a scatter of small young fish swimming close to a sunlit pond edge. Paint the shallow water first in the palest version of your usual blue-green, since shallow water near the edge always reads lighter than deeper water further out.

Once that base is dry, add six or eight tiny fry scattered across it, each one just a small simple oval with a thin tail flick, painted in soft pale orange rather than the bold saturated color of adult koi.

Next time you revisit this idea, try scattering the fry more toward one corner instead of spreading them evenly, or add a single larger adult koi passing through the background for scale and a sense of a whole pond community.

Keep every fry roughly the same small size today; the uniformity reads clearly as a young, still-growing group rather than individual fish.

What to Do Next

Pick one koi scene that matches how much time you have today, sketch the fish shapes first in pencil, and keep your water loose and light so the colors stay fresh. A canvas board and a simple palette of orange, white, jade green, and soft blue is all you need to get started.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paint works best for a koi fish painting?

Acrylic paint works best for koi fish painting because it dries fast, stays bold and opaque, and layers cleanly for smooth water over bright fish. It also forgives mistakes since you can simply paint over a dry layer.

How do you paint realistic-looking water for a koi pond?

Build the water in thin, blended layers of blue and green before adding any fish on top. Keep brushstrokes mostly horizontal, soften edges while the paint is still wet, and let the water dry fully before painting koi over it.

What colors do koi fish actually come in?

Koi come in orange, red, white, black, cream, and soft blue-grey, often in bold patches rather than blended tones. Kohaku koi are red and white, while ogon koi are a solid metallic gold or platinum color.

How do you keep koi fish from looking flat in a painting?

Add one or two tone shifts along the body, a darker line along the top edge and a lighter highlight along the belly, to suggest the fish’s curve. A thin dark outline along the very edge also helps it read as solid rather than flat.

What is an easy way to start a koi painting if I am nervous about fish anatomy?

Start with a simple long S-curve for the body before adding fins or color, since that single curve carries most of the fish’s movement and personality. Fins and detail are much easier to add once that base shape feels right.
